n June, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors voted to disband the Sheriff’s Office Cannabis Compliance Team, freeing up deputies for other priorities—including reducing the number of outstanding violent felony arrest warrants with the help of a new felony warrant detective.

The detective has investigated six “high-profile targets” so far, according to the Sheriff’s Office. At the same time, the Sheriff’s Office is working to reduce the number of low-level misdemeanor warrants by asking a judge to dismiss them.

POLITICAL WATCH • The House of Representatives recently passed U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal’s (D-Santa Barbara) legislation to rename a post office in Goleta for Frederick Lopez, a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps with a 30-year career of distinguished service.

“General Lopez represents the best of the Central Coast and of our nation’s armed forces,” Carbajal said in a Dec. 10 statement. “I’m proud that the House has voted to honor his legacy by renaming the South Patterson Avenue Post Office in Goleta in his name, ensuring that future generations will be reminded of his extraordinary contributions to our community and our country.” A Santa Barbara County native, Lopez joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1967 following his graduation from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. His service as a platoon commander during the Vietnam War earned him a Bronze Star and Combat Action Ribbon. Throughout the course of his three decades as a Marine, Lopez also earned a Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and other decorations prior to his retirement in 1998.

• On Dec. 12, U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff (D-California) issued a statement in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order to preempt state laws that establish guardrails on AI technology. “The president has the power to help develop this technology while protecting a state’s right to protect its own citizens.

Instead, he has chosen to try and preempt state laws that are establishing meaningful safeguards around AI and replace them with nothing,” Schiff stated.

“It’s no wonder leaders from both parties, including Republican governors, have spoken out against this policy.” While Congress and the federal government “should certainly take the lead on crafting the rules of the road for this revolutionary technology,” Schiff added, “in the absence of federal legislative action, the states can and must exercise the power they have to protect their residents.”

• U.S. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-California) recently urged the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) to move forward with its investigation into Hatch Act violations committed by senior Trump administration officials at the White House and U.S. Department of Justice who have repeatedly pressured states to redistrict for partisan gain. In a Dec. 9 letter, Padilla noted that it is illegal under the Hatch Act for executive branch officials to use their public office to advance partisan political activities, which could include a partisan midcycle redistricting effort to advantage a political party.

“Throughout the year, White House senior officials and others in the Trump administration have been clearly and openly engaged in a political campaign to gain seats for the Republican Party in Congress via a rare and controversial mid-decade redistricting efforts in Texas and many other states,” Padilla wrote.

“Your offices have a duty to act, not only to ensure that administration officials follow the law, but to protect these public servants across the country from bearing the brunt of this apparently illegal activity in the current heighted political threat environment.”

The letter is a follow-up to Padilla’s original inquiry to the OSC about an investigation in July. In response to Padilla’s previous letter, the Hatch Act Unit at the OSC confirmed in July that it would open a file to address this potential violation. However, the OSC had yet to provide an update as of Dec. 9, according to Padilla’s office. Padilla’s latest letter highlights recent evidence that White House officials are illegally using encrypted, private messaging services like Signal that automatically delete conversations in their partisan redistricting pressure campaign, which violates federal records laws. m

WATCHFUL GUARDIAN: The Santa Barbara County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) recently discussed budget statistics collected over the past three years related to local cemetery districts, including the Santa Maria Cemetery.

LAFCO highlights struggling cemetery districts Hoping to clear the cobwebs around an ongoing issue plaguing Central Coast cemeteries, the Santa Barbara County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) wants to explore the possibility of consolidating some of those cemetery districts.

In its 2025 review of countywide municipal services, LAFCO staff highlighted a handful of cemetery districts, including Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard and Los Alamos Cemetery, facing budget constraints due to limited tax allocations and land availability.

“We identified some of the challenges that some of these cemeteries have, often related to the amount of revenue they receive and the ability to retain staff,” LAFCO Executive Officer Mike Prater said at the commission’s Dec. 11 meeting.

Prater recommended a future study to see if consolidating some services between Los Alamos Cemetery and Santa Maria Cemetery, and Oak Hill Cemetery and Goleta Cemetery, respectively, could benefit all four districts through certain incentives and responsibility shifts.

However, pushing revisions of this kind forward would take coordination between Santa Barbara County and the impacted cemeteries to an extent beyond LAFCO’s jurisdiction, Prater added.

“To be able to resolve those down the road, that’s where it takes the effort largely probably of a district supervisor getting in contact with the cemetery districts and their boards and having those conversations,” Prater said.

LAFCO Commissioner and 4th District Supervisor Bob Nelson expressed interest in stepping up to the plate.

“These are important resources in our communities,” Nelson said. “I actually cut my teeth in government by serving on the Santa Maria cemetery board. … That one’s near and dear to my heart.”

Nelson asked Prater about the best way to get the ball rolling on exploring consolidation options. “[Do] I need to do something as a county supervisor—in my other hat—to start to have some of those conversations, … about potential consolidation?” Nelson said. “We probably shouldn’t wait until there’s some kind of calamity.”

It would be up to an impacted agency—either Santa Barbara County or one of the cemetery districts—to explore taking that route, Prater explained.

“An affected agency could be the county. So on behalf of them, you could suggest changes,” Prater said. “Ultimately, any boundary changes that come forward have to come forward from either the district itself or an affected agency.”

Prater added that LAFCO would still “play a role” during those potential coordinated efforts.

“We’ll sit as a partner alongside county representatives and/or cemetery representatives to help facilitate what those discussions might look like,” he said. “But, ultimately, either of those two entities have to sort of be the proponent and applicant for any real change.”

More cultural arts programming is headed to Santa Maria-Bonita schools Starting in January, students at 15 elementary schools will have the opportunity to join a ballet folklórico dance program after school. The Santa Maria-Bonita School District board approved a roughly $59,000 contract with Children’s Creative Project at the Dec. 10 meeting.

“By securing these services, we demonstrate our commitment to providing students with

high quality, culturally relevant art instruction,” the district’s director of teaching and learning supplemental programs, Laurie Graack, told the board.

Twice a week after school, 40 students from each campus will participate in a 90-minute workshop. They’ll learn about Mexican dance, music, art, and storytelling, spending half of each session dancing the traditional ballet folklórico in costumes and hats, Graack explained in her presentation.

The program will last for 10 weeks at each campus. Five schools will begin the program in January, five in March, and the last five will start in late April, Graack added.

Principals of Santa Maria-Bonita’s 17 elementary sites filled out a survey that the district sent to gauge interest about the workshop and scheduling preferences. Two schools are already offering ballet folklórico programs of their own.

“We think probably it’s going to be reasonable to say, ‘We’re not going to get you this time. We’ll catch you next year,’” Graack said about the two sites. “We’ll figure out a way to meet as many requests as we can.”

After Graack’s presentation, board member John Hollinshead spoke up about including more education on Mixteco cultures. Hollinshead said his questions were informed by attending a Mixteco seminar earlier that afternoon.

“We seem to repetitively or repeatedly contract with the same people to provide the same cultural outreach, and I don’t mean this to be disrespectful,” Hollinshead said. “When you hear about all the different cultural things that are happening or happen in Mexico, … I feel like we need to maybe start looking at some of those things to validate our Mixteco students as well.”

Graack responded that the district is communicating with the nonprofit Corazón del Pueblo to incorporate indigenous education in after-school programs and daily instruction.

“I think you’ll start to see those things rolling out in the school day and in our expanded learning offerings,” Graack said.

Board member Ricardo Valencia emphasized that it’s important for the district to have a close partnership with Corazón del Pueblo. Even in ballet folklórico, certain Mexican states may be left out of the conversation “inadvertently or through cultural bias,” Valencia said.

Children’s Creative Project is a program through the Santa Barbara County Office of Education. The contract sum includes all the supplies and costumes for students, which the district will keep and reuse when possible.

obbery. Carjacking. Assault with a deadly weapon. Brandishing a firearm. Several outstanding felony warrants were stacked against Victor Manuel Ayala Sanchez on the day of his arrest in Santa Maria Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office deputies took the 30-year-old into custody in mid-August after a four-hour standoff outside of Sanchez’s residence on East Sunset Avenue.

A crisis negotiation team and K9 unit were among the department’s resources that assisted deputies with evacuating other occupants of the house, including a child, and verbally calling out to Sanchez to surrender. They eventually found him hiding in his attic.

Unlike some past instances of Santa Barbara County’s apprehension of individuals wanted for outstanding warrants, Sanchez’s arrest wasn’t by chance, 5th District Supervisor Steve Lavagnino said.

“We’re being way more proactive and … not just hoping and praying that we run into somebody,” Lavagnino told the Sun. “Now we have somebody actively going after these folks.”

Lavagnino was referring to the Sheriff’s Office’s new felony fugitive detective, whose role is to help clear the county’s backlog of outstanding warrants, starting with a total of 400 for violent crimes. The county’s current total for all outstanding felony warrants is about 2,000.

Setting clear goals for shortening that tally in order of most violent crimes to less serious offenses marks a positive step forward for local law enforcement, said Lavagnino, who’s lobbied for reform within the county’s handling of outstanding warrants for nearly two years.

“Let’s focus on the people we should be focusing on, and that is the most dangerous, first. It’s pretty easy to work the list like that because you start off with the most heinous crimes and work your way down,” Lavagnino said. “Through this process, we figured out we’re not chasing 1,800, we’re chasing 400.”

of the Sheriff’s Office’s past prioritized tasks— enforcing against illegal cannabis grows—for an increased effort to reduce outstanding felony warrants.

The board’s unanimous vote disbanded the Sheriff’s Office Cannabis Compliance Team and transferred its members to different units.

One transferred deputy became the new felony warrant detective, part of the Special Investigations Bureau.

Since the role’s creation five months ago, the assigned detective has spearheaded multiple investigations into outstanding felony warrants, including the one that led to the Santa Maria standoff in August, Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Erik Raney told the Sun via email.

Sanchez was among six “high-profile targets” the detective investigated so far, using surveillance and other resources to help pinpoint suspects’ locations.

“Several are still active investigations with the wanted persons still outstanding,” Raney said.

“Several of the others led to the arrest of the wanted subject.”

Raney did not specify to the Sun how many of the six identified targets, aside from Sanchez, had been apprehended by authorities to date.

Lavagnino said he’s also hoping to hear more specifics about the warrant detective’s pursuits in the future via quarterly updates to the Board of Supervisors. The first of these reports took place during the board’s Dec. 9 meeting.

“That’s what I want to hear more about. I want to get into the details. I don’t want to know the person’s name and all that kind of stuff. But, ‘Hey, what happened? What was the outcome? … What exactly is going on?’” Lavagnino told the Sun. “Hopefully in our next update we can include more of those types of details.”

During the Dec. 9 update, Raney told the board that the Sheriff’s Office warrant detective often acquires separate warrants for cellphone data, bank records, and other resources, combined with taking part in surveillance tactics, to help track down a suspect’s whereabouts.

“In the first quarter we conducted six of these types of operations,” Raney told the board. “His sole focus is on locating and coordinating the apprehension of the most serious and violent offenders who are actively working to avoid the criminal justice system.

“And while that detective does go out and take part in apprehensions,” Raney continued, “he’s not solely going out as a solo deputy knocking on doors and putting handcuffs on individuals. Once his investigation reveals the location of a wanted subject, he’s coordinating with the appropriate resources to get that person into custody.”

Another form of coordination county officials discussed during the update was aimed at reducing the backlog of outstanding misdemeanor warrants, through what county Assistant District Attorney Kelly Duncan described as a “robust warrant purge process.”

“We’ve decided to take a look at all of the 9,000-plus warrants and identify those less serious cases for which we could seek batch dismissal of,” Duncan told the board. “Our first round, we focused on all vehicle code violations that did not include any alcohol or impaired driving offenses. Our first batch submitted to the court included 272 warrants for dismissal.”

While the District Attorney’s Office is working on additional batches to submit to the court, the first batch is awaiting final approval for dismissal, Duncan added.

Lavagnino told the Sun he believes the proposed batch dismissals will help the county better handle pursuing felony warrants in the long run.

“We’re not just getting everything expunged.

We’re talking low-level stuff,” Lavagnino said about the misdemeanors up for possible dismissal. “And honestly that’s the stuff that’s cramming up the court system, and we’re spending less time actually adjudicating some of these serious offenses.”

He added that he feels “assured that we’re not wiping out anybody that’s committed a violent offense.”

Majewski will also host art and drama sneak peeks throughout the weekend as well.

“For the same ages, I did line them up back-to-back,” Majewski explained, “so they can try everything if they want.”

FDR would be reelected in November 1936 with the greatest Electoral College majority ever achieved. He knew how to inspire skilled journalists like Dorothea Lange to compose a picture of America not as he wanted to see it, but as it really was.

In that era, our federal government was committed to knowing the truth. Roosevelt wanted desperately to know us, and he wanted all of us to know America as we truly are.

We now know something about Florence Owens Thompson—and that’s why people gathered at the Dana Cultural Center on Nov. 15: To honor her, and to honor Dorothea Lange for being there to capture the moment, the mood, the anxiety etched on her face.

Led by retired Judkins Middle School teacher Terry Handy, together we dedicated a new bronze plaque carrying her image and her story.

The plaque will soon be placed near the site of that long-abandoned pea-picker’s camp on the Nipomo Mesa.

As we acknowledge that important event, we also recognize that everywhere people are enormously anxious about the economy. It’s highly doubtful, however, that we’ll learn the truth from this administration, or from corporate media, about the challenges we are facing. We may never get the jobs report for October. Who can trust this administration to tell the truth about jobs or inflation in the months ahead?

Congress is piling on with massive cuts to the social safety net that has sustained millions of Americans for decades, in good times as well as bad: • The Big Beautiful Bill that passed last summer (H.R. 1) triggers significant cuts—almost 49 percent—to several USDA programs, including the Emergency Food Assistance program that has historically provided about $1.2 million in support annually for our SLO County Food Bank.

• Reductions in SNAP (CalFresh) benefit programs—laborious paperwork requirements and limits on eligibility—will force thousands more SLO County families to make use of the Food Bank as they lose SNAP benefits.

• These same families are squeezed by the loss of eligibility for other federal benefits such as Medicaid, health care, child care, and rental assistance.

In 1936, Americans needed to see the face of Florence Owens Thompson—and in 2025, we need the truth about the millions of Americans suffering from the neglect of our ruling oligarchy.

LETTER Let’s get rid of nuclear power and weapons

On the controversies surrounding Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, it would be most wise to move things rapidly toward decommissioning and safety protocols as this aging dinosaur becomes more susceptible to a serious accident. The machinery is becoming more brittle and weak, further increasing the chance of a serious accident. And let’s not forget the chance of a large seismic event someday in our future.

Please shut this plant down and make serious solutions to stabilizing the spent fuel pool.

Someday we can relax and move on to cleaner and safer energy production as California rids itself of nuclear-powered energy.

Furthermore, the U.S. should also seriously lead the world in decommissioning nuclear related missiles, bombs, and weapons before the inevitable occurs.

t seems like the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is working to course correct when it comes to the number of outstanding arrest warrants—something 5th District Supervisor Steve Lavagnino has been asking for.

After he expressed concerns about the issue during a Northern Branch Jail expansion discussion in April—which will cost $165 million, by the way—he vowed to bring it up again during budget conversations.

Without a warrant apprehension team, he said, law enforcement just happens to get lucky in arresting people who have felony or misdemeanor warrants.

As in, a routine traffic stop magically becomes more by happenstance. Nice. The wheels of justice work with a little luck and a lot of circumstance.

In June, as part of those budget discussions, county supes voted to disband the Sheriff’s Office’s Cannabis Compliance Team, “redistributing the manpower where it’s most needed,” Lavagnino said at the time.

Unlawful grows had declined and so had the tax dollars cannabis pays to fund things like compliance. So those deputies were reassigned to things like narcotics, and one was turned into a one-man felony warrant detective team.

“If you’re persistent and you believe in something, just keep hammering at it. Eventually, I think everybody finally saw the writing on the wall that I wasn’t going to go away on this issue,” Lavagnino said at the time. “I’m just glad we’re finally going to address what I think was a glaring hole in our justice system.”

In just a few months, the county’s slow-ass bureaucracy moved with quite the pace. Similar to how quickly the county moved with the senior mobile home park overlay to maintain affordable

mobile home parks for seniors, government can move fast when it wants to! Or when a squeaky wheel stays squeaky.

So far, the detective has focused on six “highprofile” peeps with felony warrants for alleged violent offenses. For instance, a Santa Maria man arrested in August has warrants for robbery, carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, and brandishing a firearm. After a four-hour standoff at his home, deputies took the dude into custody.

“He’s not solely going out as a solo deputy knocking on doors and putting handcuffs on individuals,” Sheriff’s Office Cmdr.

Erik Raney said. “He’s coordinating with the appropriate resources to get that person into custody.”

Better to be organized about it and coordinate with others than to accidentally pull someone like that over by yourself, you know?

With about 2,000 outstanding felony warrants (That seems like a lot, right?), the one-man team (with help when its go-time, of course) is focusing on 400 with the most violent crimes.

“We’re being way more proactive and … not just hoping and praying that we run into somebody,” Lavagnino said.

That’s valid, Steve!

I guess it’s better to start small and grow. With 400 warrants to tackle and six that have been worked on in the last six months, Santa Barbara County has a long way to go! Hopefully, the oneman team gets some research partners, otherwise it’s going to take more than 30 years to find all of those people!

And that’s only if no one else does anything too violent or crazy, then becomes a fugitive.

Reena Howmiller’s art show, titled What Lies Beneath, is up at Flying Goat Cellars in Lompoc through January.

She created colorful, abstract paintings and scarves made with Indian silk that are inspired by her other artwork.

The scarves are “colorful, wearable art to swaddle one’s decolletage in an affordable luxury item,” Howmiller said in an email to the Sun, and they’re also “anti fast fashion.”

As an artist, Howmiller is drawn to unpredictable palettes and contrasting colors. She believes that in the right circumstances, opposites can coexist and thrive.

“I am interested in making the unbelievable and improbable work with one another—in my case, towards a harmonious piece of artwork,” Howmiller said in press materials.

Since the tasting room opened in 2008, it’s featured pieces by local artists, according to Kate Griffith of Flying Goat Cellars.

There are usually four or five exhibits each year displaying artwork including photography, sculptures, paintings, or textiles that add some flair to the tasting room walls, Griffith added. A sculpture show by James Wolfe is set up outside, too.

Flying Goat Cellars is located at 1520 E. Chestnut Court in Lompoc and open Thursday to Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Friends and families can see three movies during winter break in the Santa Maria Public Library’s Altrusa Theater. The showings will each last an hour and a half.

To kick things off, the library will show Elf on Dec. 23 at 3:30 p.m. alongside interactive activities designed to help the audience engage with select scenes, youth services librarian Stacy Brigman said in an email to the Sun. The Grinch will play on Dec. 24 at noon, and viewers can enjoy popcorn while watching.

The library’s last movie of the year will be Frozen, presented on Dec. 30 at noon. Staff encourages families to dress up as their favorite characters and sing along during the film.

This month the library is also hosting reading challenges for adults and kids, a 3D printing workshop on Dec. 27, technology assistance on Dec. 28, and a New Year’s party on Dec. 31.

course, all fingers point to Father Jud as the killer, and the story is clever enough to keep us wondering, did he do it? How? The why is obvious—he believes Wicks is destroying his church and leading his followers away from Christ’s teachings. Sound familiar?

Anna: All too familiar, unfortunately. One thing I love about the Knives Out films is Johnson’s knack for creating moody sets and scenery—rich in detail and texture. The church and the grounds where the story’s centered

are no different. It feels removed from the world. Much like the way Stephen King can create a universe for horror, Johnson seems to be adept at setting the scene of a mystery. It’s a popcorn flick for sure, and a good one. SEAN COMBS: THE RECKONING

What’s it rated? TV-MA When? 2025 Where’s it showing? Netflix Delving into Sean Combs’ past is not what the world needs right now; any attention is ill-deserved. Despite that, it’s nothing less than fascinating to see how the once big-time music mogul snaked his way up the proverbial ladder and became someone who believed himself untouchable.

This docuseries does nothing to proclaim the sexual abuser as anything but—every interview, every witness speaks on the ego and violence that Combs exudes. The series uses intimate footage of Combs in the days preceding his arrest to set the frame for the end of the story, his long court battle and sentencing. What’s amazing is he tried to legally block the story, saying the footage was used without permission, but in fact he refused to pay the videographer he hired, who sold the footage to 50 Cent.

Through interviews with colleagues, peers, and employees, the series paints the image of a man who thinks himself closer to a god than a mortal, a checkers player trying to play 4D chess, and frankly, a cheapskate rapist with no real friends.

Get ready to get angry. Let’s all just hope the stain on his name continues after his prison release. (four approximately one-hour episodes) —Anna

Michael John Warren (Shrek the Musical) directed this concert documentary shot over two nights in Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in October 2022, two years after Prine’s death at 73. A mix of up-and-coming and top-tier performers cover Prine’s iconic material—or in some cases, such as Lucinda Williams and Kasey Musgrave, perform original songs inspired by their relationship with Prine.

The documentary paints a portrait of an incredibly talented artist and absolute character, and the film is interspersed with archival footage of Prine himself as well as contemporary interviews by those he in some way touched.

It’s stirring to hear people like Tyler Childers, Brandi Carlile, The War and Treaty, and Jason Isbell sing Prine’s songs and speak with such reverence for the man.

Valerie June and Nathaniel Rateliff sang one of my favorites, “In Spite of Ourselves,” and Kurt Vile’s version of “How Lucky” was amazing, as was I’m With Her’s version of “Unwed Fathers.”

The couple behind a new wellness company encourages humans to return to their wild states

E

rik Steinkamp and Keri Joy Waxer eat dandelions. Steinkamp, the chef in their relationship, prepares the flowers like he does most vegetables that he buys from the store or farmers market.

First, he cuts the bottoms off, sticks them in cold water, and lets them rejuvenate outside in the sun. The process, he said, releases vegetables from their dormant states because before he got them, they’d likely been separated from their roots and refrigerated in the dark, almost hibernating.

“If you’re eating a living, vibrant, metabolizing thing, then you’re also going to be getting a lot more of the benefits and nutrition that that has,” Steinkamp said.

When it comes time to incorporate dandelions into his meals, the chef usually chops up the leaves and throws them into a pasta or chili dish during the last minutes of cooking. They almost disappear into the recipe, he described, while adding “a ton of nutrition and vitality.” He said dandelions are beneficial for detoxing, balance, and cleansing.

Though they are a superfood, many people view dandelions as pesky growths in their grass. But in Steinkamp’s mind, dandelions pop up because nature isn’t supposed to have monocrops.

“The fact that it’s treated like a weed, it shows how far humanity has gone from what really is important,” Steinkamp said.

The Solvang couple’s goal is to promote ancestral living, the concept of how humans lived way back when.

“The idea of becoming a feral human—essentially leaving the domesticated world and going back to our wild state of being close to the land—really connected with me,” Steinkamp said. “And then food was such a big part of it.”

The couple is serious about the philosophy of ‘you are what you eat.’

If a certain ingredient didn’t exist 100 years ago, they’re probably not interested in consuming it.

Waxer remembered hearing about Steinkamp’s thoughts on ancestral living during their early stages of dating. Individually, they were living similar lifestyles, but Feral Future brought them closer.

“His idea was so grand and so beautiful and really just touched every cell in my body,” Waxer said.
