T

he Central Coast Wine Competition is the largest wine evaluation event that recognizes wines produced exclusively from vinifere grown on the Central Coast Region of California. The Central Coast Wine Competition is a merger of six California Fairs Wine Competitions: The San Benito County Fair, Contra Costa County Fair, Monterey County Fair, California Mid-State Fair, Santa Barbara County Fair, and the Ventura County Fair. The 2016 Competition saw over 700 entries, from over 140 wineries throughout the California Central Coast.

eorge Adam’s path to being recognized as the Santa Barbara County Fair Farmer of the Year began back in 1869 when his Scottish relatives came to farm in Santa Maria.

Kathy was born in Pullman, Washington and came to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1960.

Rocco and Kathy attended local schools in Los Olivos, Ballard and Santa Ynez. Rocco graduated from Santa Ynez High School and Kathy graduated from Dunn. Rocco continued to Allan Hancock College.

While attending Hancock College, Rocco’s baseball team won the state championship. Rocco’s first memory of his wife, Kathy was in the 60’s. Kathy played in the Ballard Drum and Bugle corps and they always beat out Rocco’s school in marching band competitions. Rocco was re-introduced to Kathy at a dinner with some friends and later Rocco persuaded Kathy to marry him and they have enjoyed 39 years together. Rocco claims they have never had a single fight….that he won.

Rocco spent 40 years working for PG&E and retired only to go back to work for PG&E to help with special projects. Rocco started out working

The ongoing drought has reduced his herd from a high of 400 mother cows to the present 150 head.

Managing stock-water and rotating cows to good grass lands keep Fred and his long-time friend and helper, the cowboy poet Dick Gibford, quite busy.

Fred was born in 1933 and in 1944 his father, Juan Reyes and uncle, Eugene Wegis, bought the Walking R Ranch. Unfortunately, tragedy struck the family with Fred’s father passing away when Fred was just 15. Fred understood his new role and he and his hard-working mother, Gertrude took over the cattle operations.

After graduating from Maricopa High School, Fred attended Cal Poly studying Animal Husbandry and achieving a certificate in Horseshoeing.

In 1955 Fred volunteered for the draft and went into the Army for 2 years and met his future wife, Jean while stationed in Virginia where they both worked in intelligence and security. Jean’s first thought when she inspected the ranch was, “This will be an adventure!”. And an adventure it has been. Electrical power arrived to the ranch in 1969 and life was looking up…. Fred and Jean will celebrate 58 years of marriage this September.

Fred and Jean raised two daughters, Juanice and Melanie, on the remote ranch. Melanie lives in Santa Maria and Juanice lives with her husband, John in Washington state. Growing up, both daughters were active in showing livestock at the Santa Barbara County Fair. Fred himself showed livestock in those early days, one year raising and showing not one but three Champion Steers; one at the Santa Barbara County Fair, one at the Cow Palace, and one at the Santa Barbara Expo.

Fred was the first to commercially bring Brangus and Beefmasters into the Cuyama Valley. For over 10 years Fred also raised pure-bred Corriente cattle which were marketed to roping enthusiasts.
