Shaw’S SteakhouSe
714 S. Broadway, Santa Maria Shaw’s Steakhouse is a well-oiled machine. Every piece is calibrated for one thing only: to give locals the very best steaks and very best service in the Santa Maria Valley. “For the older locals, Shaw’s has been in business since it was Bud Shaw’s, when it was established in 1953,” Traci Guggia, of Milt Guggia Enterprises, which owns Shaw’s, told the Sun. “So, they see it as an institution.” Guggia said that the standards locals come to expect from Shaw’s are upheld with special attention from Milt Guggia himself. They see regular business from local government, the agricultural community, and the “who’s who” of Santa Maria’s business world. Runner-up: The Swiss Restaurant and Bar —Joe Payne

Jocko’S Steak houSe 125 N. Thompson Ave., Nipomo When you think of dinner out in Nipomo, you think of Jocko’s Steak House. With roots going way back, Jocko’s is the place to be for a nononsense steak dinner cooked to perfection.
While the décor may be casual, diners are advised to make reservations. It’s no secret why, Jocko’s oak-fire barbecued meat is always aged well, juicy, and succulent. The establishment is synonymous with Nipomo, and is so popular that the owners declined an interview for Best Of 2017, stating they already have too much business and reservations. 1321-M N. H St., Lompoc Lompoc may feel like a small town, but it packs a lot of flavor, especially at Mi Amore’s Pizza and Pasta. But the Italian eatery also serves as a welcome home for visitors. “We’re very family oriented,” owner Stacy Smith said of popularity in Northern Santa Barbara County. “We’ve been in town a long time, we’ve got great food, and great service.” The joint even makes its own sauce and dough from scratch. Locals love the lunch buffet and lasagna too. Look for a few cool new games (including a Jurassic Park themed one) coming soon to the game room as well, which the kids love. They’ve tried to uphold the nostalgia that so many feel when they pull into Buellton’s beloved eatery.

SUN PICK Meet the builders Orcutt Academy Spartatroniks brought the Sunbot to life BY JOE PAYNE
W
hen the Sun reached out to Orcutt Academy High School robotics team’s faculty advisor, Ty Frederiks, in March about the Spartatroniks possibly making Best Of 2017 a very special issue, he was ready to jump at the opportunity. But first, the team had to fly to Houston, Texas, for the FIRST World Championships. Once the Spartatroniks team was back home, they began work on the Sunbot, a custom robot designed to present a select few Best Of winners with their awards. The prospect of building a new robot, right after their build and competition season, came as a surprise to the team, including Robot Captain Allison Fenske. “I was a little upset, I have to admit, because I thought it was going to be like another build season, and we just came off a super long build season,” she said, laughing. “And I was like, why would you throw this in now, during summer?” It’s a good thing that the Spartatroniks are a resourceful bunch, because they were able to rely on some work they’d done previously. They used a “base structure” they already had, Fenske explained, and added to it.
“So, the robot is actually the prototype robot from last year with an attachment on top of it,” she said. “If we didn’t have that, we would have had to make a base frame, and probably put wheels on it, and then make a new electrical board. It would have taken a lot longer.” The team was given a simple request from the Sun: Give us a robot that can “hand over” an award. Some other ideas were thrown around, but they knew they needed a mechanical arm that could lift and present the awards. They conceived of a mechanism, which they titled the “award lifter upper,” and shortened to the acronym ALU. It stemmed from an ongoing joke that annoyed one of their coaches, naming aspects of their robots with two verbs, Fenske explained. The ALU took a good amount of work from the mechanical sector of the team, explained Spartatroniks’ Mechanical Lead Kyle Soto. “As far as the award lifter upper, that was kind of difficult to make because that bottom tray was originally a flat sheet that we used hammer forming on,” Kyle Soto said. “So, we basically just smacked it with a hammer.” “It was a very loud day,” Fenske added. The team wasn’t done there, of course. They designed some Plexiglas doors that opened up as the ALU engaged and even had the Sun’s Best Of logo machined out of metal and riveted to the doors. Their advisor, Fredericks, was also constantly pushing the team with new ideas to help trick out the Sunbot. They added LED light strips, which were programmed by student William Jin to change colors and give some visual variety to each photo shoot. And then there was the confetti launcher—a pneumatically powered tube designed to shoot

Team mentors Gil Gillpaszek and Rick Soto (Kyle’s dad) helped out as well, but the kids handled pretty much everything. They could move the robot around, use the business that’s worthy of attention: Meathead ALU, and launch confetti all on cue. Movers! It all began on the Central Coast, but Building the Sunbot was also a first for the business continues to grow, with a new location team in two ways, Fenske explained, in that in Oxnard and others in Ventura and Orange they got to work on a project that didn’t meet County, and it’s no wonder why.
