A GOOD YEAR We are nearing the end of a year that we hope has been a good one for you; it has been good for Binter. By the end of 2023 we will have carried five million passengers and offered more than 6.4 million seats. In addition, we have grown by over 10% compared to 2022 and almost 25% compared to 2019. In June we celebrated reaching the milestone of 80 million passengers carried on our flights since Binter was created in 1989.

These figures are important but what really matters to us is knowing that we continue to have your trust and support. We pay close attention here at Binter to monitoring and improving passenger satisfaction, loyalty and recommendation indicators, areas where we have achieved record figures. This is a source of great pride for us as they are crucial metrics for gauging whether we are attaining our goal of providing the best possible service.

The main news concerning Binter’s programming this year has unquestionably been the announcement of the new direct flights between the Canary Islands and Madrid.

Starting in February, we will bring our premium service to the most important air route between the Canary Islands and the Spanish mainland. It is a tough test that we hope to pass with a high mark thanks to your support. Indeed, we decided to enter these highly competitive routes after receiving encouragement from our customers to take up the challenge. In addition to the support of our clients and the financial backing received from our banks, this dream has become reality thanks to the engagement, professionalism and enthusiasm of all who work at Binter. Thanks to them, we are about to open our first base outside the Canaries to support the eight daily flights that we will operate to Madrid.

We should not just talk about Madrid, however. This year we have continued to expand our routes with the launch of direct connections to five new destinations. In late March we commenced twice-weekly flights to Granada, our second destination in Andalusia. In July we launched a new summer route to Ibiza and, for several months, flew to all three Balearic Islands with an airport, thus bringing Spain’s two archipelagos closer together. At international level, the main new feature was our three routes with Essaouira, Tangiers and Nouadhibou, which were launched to reinforce Binter’s network of destinations in Africa.

In order to address all these programming developments while still offering the best service to our customers, we continue to renew and expand our fleet of aircraft. We have purchased further Embraer E195-E2 jets to add six more to the five that will

join our fleet for the start of the Madrid flights, bringing Binter’s total number of this model of aircraft to sixteen in 2025. Furthermore, during 2023 we have continued to take delivery of new ATR 72-600 aircraft, which offer improved passenger comfort.

These aircraft are mainly used for our inter-island connections, where we operate an average of 210 flights per day, with 225 on peak demand days.

It is very important to us that all the Canary Islands and all who live here, or who come to visit us, benefit from the connectivity offered by Binter. For this reason, we have devised different ways to make it easier for all Canarians to travel to our domestic mainland destinations for the same price, regardless of their island of residence, as well as to ensure easy access for visitors to all the islands.

Binter offers its passengers inter-island connections with domestic flights to the mainland at no additional cost. In economic terms, this means that we are all equal regardless of the island where we live or which island we choose to visit when travelling to the Canaries. Moreover, our clients can purchase products such as Discover, the Binter stopover, which allows you to organise a stay on two islands, or Airpass Explorer, which lets you take up to eight flights between islands at a reduced fare when visiting the Canaries.

As you can see, we have been very busy but we have not neglected our obligation, one we gladly accept, to collaborate in the social development and well-being of the Canary Islands beyond our transport role. We continue to be associated with different projects that contribute to a more sustainable world and focus on the environment, health, culture, education and sports as a way to secure a better society for all.

These projects, carried out under the Binter Social umbrella, have seen us continue to facilitate the transportation of blood/blood products and of animals requiring treatment on another island, support initiatives such as El Camino de Los Valores, undertake volunteering actions such as 8 years, 8 islands, and expand our Binter NightRun venues. These are just some of our many initiatives, which will remain a key part of our work during the coming year.

“THE DAY I STOP GETTING NERVOUS IS THE DAY I PACK IT IN BECAUSE IT WILL MEAN IT DOESN’T MATTER TO ME” Omayra Cazorla (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1988) is a Canarian comedian who, just as she does in her line of work, started to joke as soon as we met. Why interview her? “It’s not as if I am a Beyoncé or anyone like that”, she snapped. However, beneath that layer of humour, which she describes as “a bit brutal”, lies an Omayra who comes across as very down to earth and warm when talking about her work.

I’m a bit kamikaze, straight for the jugular. That said, when you are doing something off the cuff with a member of the audience and the person feels uncomfortable, that’s when you have to stop. You need to call a halt to it and take the script in another direction.

How did you get into the world of comedy?

I studied drama and during the third year of my degree I would go and watch my classmates doing monologues in bars. One day my wife said to me: “Omy, instead of going to watch your classmates, why not do your own monologues?”. That was the light-bulb moment. I had never thought of myself as doing monologues, it was nothing I had ever dreamed of. But then I thought it might be a good idea, especially to avoid having to do auditions for jobs [she laughs]. It would allow me to go my own way, do my own thing. And it worked.

Is the Omayra Cazorla we see the real you as a person or an exaggeration?

For me, comedy is about stirring things up, which is why I exaggerate a lot.

However, if you see me in my day to day life, I am not the funny girl. I am totally normal. I go to the supermarket, do my shopping, say hello to people but I do my own thing. I have never considered myself to be the funny one in the group, just a normal girl.

Have you experienced uncomfortable moments on stage?

Yes, I have. Mainly because some people in the audience do not know what they have signed up to in coming. They

that you think has something really great, but it turns out that it doesn’t work. It sounds good in your head but when the moment of truth comes it is crap. You have to be adapting things all the time. My scripts are never set in stone; I adapt them to the type of audience, knowing that it is not the same for someone aged sixty as for a 19-year-old. It doesn’t reach them in the same way. You have to play around with things a little too, read the situation, where you are performing and for whom.

As well as stirring things up, what else is comedy for you?

It’s a really powerful tool to put the truth out there. And a really powerful tool for social criticism. If you are outraged about something, you don’t get the message across properly. But when you do it through humour, people take things differently. They may or not agree, but they can end up laughing about it. I studied social work also and when I put the two together, I said to myself “wow, this is a powerful weapon”. And that is what I use it as.

What are you currently doing and what are your forthcoming plans?

I am currently doing a show called Yo también fui hetero (‘I used to be hetero’).

We began almost a year ago but to tell the truth we have not really toured much with it. That’s why we want to carry on touring; I feel it is a powerful script. That probably sounds narcissistic and bigheaded, i.e. my script is the tops [laughs]. However, I think it works very well and I want to do the show in more places. That’s what I’m doing at present: we are performing in Majorca and the show has sold out. I was amazed … sold out in Majorca? When the chance came up, I remember thinking initially ‘I’m nobody there’. Yet I’ll be doing the show in Majorca, Madrid, Barcelona, and also in the Canary Islands for as long as audiences want me.

Do you get nervous before a show?

Always. The day I stop getting nervous is the day I pack it in because it will mean it doesn’t matter to me, that I don’t give what I do the respect it deserves. If properly managed and as long as they do not cause you to get hysterical, nerves are really important.

Do you try your scripts out on anyone?

Yes. My wife supervises me. We work as a team and she is really critical. She doesn’t indulge me. She pulls no punches.

I am probably really enthusiastic about an idea but and she says “What’s that supposed to be?”. She keeps my feet on the ground. It is always important to have someone like that. Someone who makes sure that, when you are working on an idea, you realise that you might be framing it in a way people will not understand.

From the creative point of view, I would imagine that comedy is challenging. How do you manage that aspect?

The creative part is often dry or fallow.

It is there somewhere but you haven’t a clue where. Getting it right is really hard.

MY NAME IS DECEMBER Dear reader, December is my month, even if you don’t believe me.

It’s the truth, not a lie; it is what I really feel.

I am writing figuratively, here in your seat. The month is not actually mine, it belongs to everyone and nobody at the same time. Nonetheless, let me insist: the month is mine and I would love it to be yours too.

Years ago, pop group Mecano had a song called Un año más (Another Year) whose lyrics included the following: «Sailors, soldiers, single, married, lovers, walkers, and the occasional …».

discover rather than sit and wait; work instead of complaining; desire, love and add rather than subtract; and see a film, a good film, time and time again; nothing beats that.

That is what it seems like, another year, but I am reluctant to accept it.

Months are much more than just months for many of us. We should not believe that months, weeks and days are just there to flick through them, all grouped together and resigned to their fate, in the scribbled pages of an old and battered diary; forming a year, another year, and another… and so it goes on endlessly.

We need to feel and experience how projects are dreamed up, worked on, carried forward, made to grow and evolve. Day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year.

It is also true that we can get it wrong, regret something; we fall and get dirty.

Some stories come to an end, fizzle out and disappear; ugly stories. But that should not should not stop us from dreaming, getting excited, imagining a new idea, a plan, an exciting aspiration, a love.

I am fully behind those of you who prefer to create rather than contemplate;

very magazine. That was eight years ago and I thought to myself: “Time flies”.

Two years later, in 2017, I published “It’s always Christmas in December”.

That is what months, years, weeks and even days are. Although they can seem just numbers, statistics and mathematics, they are stories, grand tales and beautiful narratives. Some may be sad, but they are all our stories, our life memories, our life adventure.

Let’s all reset our minds, put them back to zero: restore, repair, update ourselves. It is time to go back and start again. To breathe.

In that regard, December is my story. It has always been when I look back and review. As far back as I can remember that these weeks of the year go by the name of December, they have been a wonderful part of my biography; my name is December.

I want little notes on my windscreen, on the glass door of the cabinet, on my bedroom door. I want little notes everywhere, messages of love, of trust, clues regarding a gift, little complicities made from turrón. They will be smiles that smell of sugared almonds. Some of us will go to our parents’ homes for Christmas, others to our children’s; most of us will go to our own homes and may be accompanied by our children and their partners during these festive days.

We need to take out our memories of this and many other years from the special box: the best, valuable and important ones, the clean ones. If they are not clean, we need to give them a rinse, cure them, paint them, touch them up with make-up and display them as if they were balls or decorations on a beautiful Christmas tree, and place them very carefully one by one, like fragile and delicate glass, on the tree that will light up our month: December.

Opportunity arises: it arose for me in December, my month, when a blind 24th (Christmas Eve) appeared on the scene and took me up to thirty; everything centred on sharing, creating excitement, caring, and smiling. What a great plan.

It is a time to enjoy, to play at choosing where to place each of the memories, projects and dreams, our life’s decorations, on this magical tree that grows every year but also gets older, just like our own life. One that becomes more precious and more valuable every day; the life that has shaped me and bewitches me, with a smile. Every day is Maitia (‘my love’, in Basque).

I would urge you to dream and let yourself be carried away by your imagination. Don’t forget to ask for something for Christmas. Letters to Santa Claus are important and the Three Kings will return, with presents for you.

We will meet again on a Binter flight and, magazine in hand, take a deep breath, breathe in the month of December. Let’s close our eyes for a moment and fly, like clouds, dream. We are all flying, flying back.

We can and should look back and take stock. I always have December in my life. I look forward to it, get excited at its arrival, and get nervous and anxious as it approaches. I redo my life plan, my purpose, my mission and my intentions.

TIJARAFE’S MASSES OF LIGHT Misas de Luz (Masses of Light) are a further expression of joy at the imminent birth of the Baby Jesus.

To celebrate the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary, nine masses used to be held at 6 am in Tijarafe’s church. The number has fallen today and only five are now held in each town district.

CEPSA FOUNDATION PROMOTES ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AT 2ND BIODIVERSITY DAY The 2nd Cepsa Foundation Biodiversity Day, which was organised in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and attracted a large audience, showcased the most important projects in which the Foundation is involved in this field in the Canaries and Andalusia.

Contributions centred on the Santa Cruz Palmetum, a model for converting a landfill site into a botanical garden and featuring projects such as the new plant nursery.

Other subjects included the future restoration of the peri-urban Las Mesas Park as a natural green corridor between Santa Cruz and the Anaga Mountains; the Foundation’s commitment to natural spaces in Huelva and Cádiz, including the Primera de Palos Lagoon and Madrevieja environmental station; and the S.O.S. CARETTA: Fishermen for biodiversity project to help sea turtles.

Events such as this foster collective awareness and create a space for dialogue and understanding among public/ private institutions and the general public, as a step towards action.

THE ART OF THE VOID THAT FILLS EVERYTHING IN SAN SEBASTIÁN The sculptures by Eduardo Chillida caress and comb a city lapped by the waters of the Bay of Biscay. Works made of iron and granite that blend with the deep greenery of Basque forests in Chillida Leku or, in the case of the immortal Comb of the Wind, with the wild waves of the sea. They invite you to immerse yourself in a wonderful open-air museum that showcases the charms of San Sebastián, while also encouraging reflection.

Sheltered by the Igueldo and Urgull mountains, the city has been turned into an extraordinary gallery of works that dialogue in simple and intimate fashion with the spaces they occupy and with the people who stop to contemplate them. Mount Urgull, the lung of San Sebastián, is a fabulous public park that is home to the 12th century Mota Castle, which elegantly overlooks the old part.

This woodland area is also home to one of Chillida’s earliest works, Torso, which he made in bronze in 1948. If you walk down to the old part and lose yourself among its baroque facades, you will continue the conversation with the city’s

The figures through which the renowned artist expressed his individual vision of the world and which seduced 20th century intellectuals form part of San Sebastián’s urban landscape. It would be inconceivable today to walk through its streets without following the trail of the architect of the void, as he liked to define himself.

A mere six kilometres from San Sebastián, on the outskirts of Hernani, lies Chillida Leku, an old family farm where the artist focused his efforts during the last twenty years of his life. Today it is a unique museum, conceived as a giant work of art, which draws together the very essence of Chillida in the most comprehensive and representative collection of his works. Many of his sculptures are distributed in the gardens, in the shade of beech, oak and magnolia trees, and in the rooms of the houses, where some of his paintings are also on view. “Chillida’s place” allows you to lose yourself among these works, which are designed to create a bond with the visitor and make Chillida Leku their home too. A detailed tour, led on occasions by the artist’s own grandson, is one of the experiences available at the luxurious Arbaso Hotel in the heart of San Sebastián. A stay here, savouring its simple luxury and the hearty breakfasts served in its Narru restaurant (which are entire meals in themselves), is the best way to continue dreaming about the ever-living art of Chillida: only by dreaming can dreams be achieved.

Looking out to sea in La Concha Bay is always a must and a further way to discover the sculptor in the shape of his granite Tribute to Fleming, which is anchored on the seafront promenade across from the little island of Santa Clara. A little further on, a small hill known as Pico del Loro (Parrot’s Beak) separates the beaches of La Concha and Ondarreta. Overlooking this are the gardens of the Miramar Palace, home to the Embrace which Chillida dedicated to painter Ruiz Balerdi. It is a small sculpture whose simplicity and size convey intense feelings.

The sands of the Ondarreta beach lead you to the author’s most iconic work. Fixed to the rocks, the so-called Comb of the Wind caresses not just the wind but the waves also, particularly on days when they anger and defy its steel tips. This set of three sculptures pounded by the sea is actually part of a series of twenty-three, some of which are on display at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid. Chillida spent seventeen years finishing them and the work took him back to his past: this sublime complex (officially designated a Cultural Asset in 2019) stands in the very same place where he played as a child. CUDILLERO: A TRIP TO A COLOURFUL FISHING TOWN

Our trip starts at exit 428 of the A8 motorway, which brings us to the CU-3 road, the best way to get to Cudillero.

The road meanders for a time and, after one bend, we finally catch a glimpse of the harbour. If Cudillero remains one thing it is a fishing village. You will readily see the fishermen arrive on their boats at dawn and continue their work for several hours in the harbour, unloading catches, mending nets and doing the other tasks

commonly performed by the pixuetos, the name given to the local fishermen, who coexist with the town’s caizos (traders).

We park the car in the harbour carpark and walk across the bridge, leaving the fishermen’s association, tourist office and the view of the sea behind. The town gradually comes into full view in an image so typical of Cudillero: the colourful houses dotted all the way along the hillside that runs down to the sea.

Cudillero’s main square, the Plaza de la Marina, is full of life at all times of the day and is also full of bars with terraces, as well as small shops such as the La Ribera fishmonger, which opened in 1925 and is run by brothers Demetrio and Manuel. Although tourism reached this corner of Asturias a long time ago, Cudillero – which has received the distinction of being one of the most beautiful towns in Spain many times – continues to have a life of its own beyond the tourist industry.

We move on to Santa Marina, a town just twenty minutes by car from Cudillero, to visit the Gueirua beach We walk up any one of the narrow streets to get another view of the town by visiting its different viewpoints. El Baluarte, La Estrecha, Cimadevilla, La Garita, La Atalaya, El Faro and a long list of others give us a different perspective over this small town and whet our appetite for a meal at Casa Mari, a classical cider house with terrace that caters for all tastes: seafood, meat and all types of casseroles. However, there are also other restaurants such as Los Arcos and El Faro.

One curious feature of the town are the fish skins that can be seen in house doorways drying and swaying in the sun and wind. The skins are from the famous curadillo, a small shark colloquially known as gato (cat) which used to be very important to the local economy. Once used for oil for cooking and lighting, it can still be savoured in local restaurants.

We move on to Santa Marina, a town just twenty minutes by car from Cudil-

lero, to visit the Gueirua beach, which changes dramatically depending on whether the tide is high or low. Viewed from the air, it resembles the skeleton of a stranded whale but these are in fact large rocks bearing names such as Candanón, Caldeirina and Peñón de los Ayos. From Santa Marina we can reach the beach after a short walk of one kilometre down a steep slope. At low tide you can walk along the beach towards the Silencio beach (also known as Gaviero).

Although you can expect to get a little wet, the distance between the two beaches is less than three kilometres and you walk past the lovely Molín waterfall produced by the Cándano stream. When you get to the Silencio beach, you can walk up the path to the viewpoint for a different perspective of this spot, which is guarded by impressive plunging cliffs.

The small town of Somao was honoured as an Exemplary Town by the Princess of Asturias Foundation in 2020 If we are keen to see even more of the coast, to the east of Cudillero there are endless coastal paths, such as the Senda de los Miradores (Viewpoint Trail) which takes us – through woodlands in some parts – to vantage points and beaches that are perfect for watching the sun go down against the backdrop of the sea. Another option is to rent a bicycle at Cape Vidio, a very attractive and relatively flat area.

cess of Asturias Foundation in 2020 for its many beautifully-preserved mansion houses of all shapes and colours. Known as casas indianas (Indian houses), these houses were built by locals who emigrated mostly to Cuba and subsequently returned home. They have names such as the Tower House, the Mansion, Mariciel or the House of Columns. Other buildings in the same style, including the church, cinema and school, were also built by those who made their fortune on the other side of the Atlantic.

Bees are our friends, as we all know,.

Way back in ancient times, between 8000 and 4000 BC, humans went from being mere gatherers to providing an environment for bees to shelter, reproduce and produce the honey we eat.

his tears were transformed into bees on reaching the earth. Moreover, honey was regularly used in medicine and food, as well as in funeral rites.

More recently, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and, of course, the Arabs have left us abundant documentation and tales of how important bees and honey were for them. It is well known that Arabs use honey in a wide variety of traditional pastries, which we can enjoy in souks throughout the Maghreb, as well as in food such as honeyed chicken, a delicious Moroccan dish. It also has many uses in traditional medicine.

By the year 4000 BC, Sumerian pictographs already included details of bee care and the technology of honey production, which has survived to modern times.

3500 years before Christ, the Egyptians produced engravings depicting honey collecting. Bees were revered as it was believed that, when a god cried,

For that reason, on any trip to Morocco, among many other places to visit, we should not miss the world’s biggest traditional beehive complex. That’s right: the biggest.

To contemplate it, touch it and experience it is an experience that is hard to convey in words, letters or even photographs. I was impressed not only by the complex itself but by the surroundings, the stillness and silence, as well as the buzzing of the bees around me.

On our trip we were accompanied by Brahim, conservator, president of the local beekeepers’ association, beekeeper, merchant and guide. He is a likeable, cheerful man and great conversationalist, who is highly knowledgeable about the history of this giant apiary, its traditions and its current problems.

The complex is reached along a track which has some parts that are not in the best state so a high vehicle is recommended. Although it does not have to be a 4x4, in some sections the underside might touch the ground. The tracks are maintained but if it has rained recently the runoff can cause part of the surface to be washed away.

It is simply impressive. It has been observing us, Brahim tells me, since 1520 and has a capacity of more than 4000 cylindrical honeycombs with a cover at each end and a hole through which its dwellers enter and leave.

First of all, and as is customary, once the appropriate introductions have been completed, tea is obligatory. It is sweet and strong and made in the traditional way with local herbs, a treat for the palate.

with a life expectancy of 45 days, compared to the five or six years a queen bee lives. Modern hives have between 60,000 and 80,000 bees.

that, without water, the plants do not flower or, worse still, there are simply none.

The beekeeper explained to us in great detail how in May the honey is collected from carob and in July from oregano, cactus, thyme and thuja, which gives it different aromas, colours and flavours. In my opinion, the strongest is cactus while the most exclusive is argan honey, which has a strong and peculiar flavour.

An equally important concern is the partial abandonment of this traditional beekeeping system, which stands in contrast to the modern systems that are much more effective and produce more honey. This apiary is home to native bees that produced just 500 kilos in 2022, although the quality is clearly evident.

We were treated to a tasting of different varieties and were absolutely delighted.

The beehive complex is organised very simply, on six levels adapted terrace-like to the uneven terrain.

Each family has enough space for their hives, which are arranged in grids.

Families are separated by a double beam, which rests on a strut that holds up the roof and marks the boundaries of the property of each. Everything is made of wood and clay.

Regrettably, few families practise this traditional activity nowadays given that new hives and bees – the former more numerous and the latter more productive – cause beekeepers to switch to modern forms. Further factors are the drought mentioned earlier and the use of pesticides that cause irreversible damage to the hives.

DISCOVER THE CANARY ISLANDS The Organs, a beautiful natural formation The north of Vallehermoso (La Gomera) is home to one of the most outstanding examples in the Canary Islands of vertical columns of rock formed by the gradual cooling of volcanic materials which are later exposed by the action of sea erosion. Designated a Protected Natural Space and a Natural Monument, this basaltic complex covers an area of one hundred and fifty hectares. The stunning cliff is almost seven hundred metres high and difficult to reach by land, which explains why it can only be viewed from the sea or air. Today it is one of La Gomera’s distinctive natural symbols. This stretch of the island’s coast is outstanding not only for its scenic value but also its biological riches, especially on its seabed.

Ropa vieja, a dish with a misleading name Made with chickpeas, pork, chicken and potatoes, this elaborate mix comes in a distinctive variant in the Canary Islands.

Some of the ingredients of ropa vieja, such as chickpeas, need to be steeped in water the night before. They are then cooked in a large pot with water, meat and a pinch of salt. When the chickpeas are tender, drain them and dice the pork, shred the chicken and fry the onion, pepper and chopped tomatoes together. Add crushed garlic, paprika, saffron and salt and fry everything in oil. When it is nearly ready, add chopped parsley, thyme, bay leaf, chicken, chickpeas and meat, simmering everything on low heat. Lastly, fry the potatoes in little cubes and add them to the mixture; the resulting ropa vieja is ready for serving.

Meanwhile, the region’s unique climate has produced one of the world’s most outstanding laurel forests, situated in the uppermost parts of the Park.

REDISCOVERING THE TRACE OF TIME

A young boy turns soil over. He piles it up with his hands at the rear of his grandfather’s house and makes a burial mound where he conceals objects that wait to be found. It is fake. A trick. It is also a time of excitement every time he takes them out and rediscovers them, as if they had been waiting for centuries for him to find them. Iván Arencibia Rivero (Valleseco, 1982) once dreamt of being an Egyptologist and now, as a conservator and restorer of cultural goods, he manages to uncover, observe and care for the past.

A thermohygrometer measures the environmental conditions of the studio where he performs his magic. He introduces us to the ‘patients’ that accompany him today: a canvas by painter Pepe Dámaso; a wood carving of St Blas which retains its colours well despite suffering various disasters; at the far end, an altarpiece wating for him to look at it closely. By an unknown hand and dating back to the 16th century, it is part of a private collection that left Madrid for Gran Canaria in the 1970s. It portrays a serene-looking Virgin of the Rosary.

In her left arm she holds the Baby Jesus, who plays with the beads of a rosary made of pearls linked by red thread and which serves to frame the pair. Her green skirts are full of stars and tassels hang down from the canopy, notes Arencibia as he looks at the painting.

His profession is akin to a guild. He points out that there are a dozen or so restorers and conservators currently practising in Gran Canaria, at a time when unauthorised practice by unqualified individuals is very common.

Do you remember Borja’s Ecce homo which prompted millions of memes on the internet? That botched restoration of the original is now a registered trademark that sells products bearing an image born out of malpractice. “We first preserve, then restore. What is the point of me doing this if water then drips on it from a leak? –he says–; The legacy of our ancestors is what is passed down to us and we have a social duty to bequeath it to future generations in the best possible state”.

To that end he proposes involving the public through information talks, guided tours and, as he has done on previous occasions, visual presentations in which they can see the before and after of a restored work. Repainting badly, sanding, or simply removing dust can prove fatal.

The altarpiece is on the operating table because it requires a series of consolidations, the name given to minor interventions aimed at improving the cohesion of a work. Iván presses down on one of the corners with his knuckles and says that he will suggest to the owners that an infrared scanner be used to discover what lies hidden beneath the visible layer.

However, other interventions reflect behaviours of previous eras. An example: the frame of the Virgin of the Rosary is simulated wood. “It is an optical effect from the 18th century. The wood grains are almost certainly covering up the poor condition of the bottom part and would coincide with the change in aesthetics of that time. There is gold leaf underneath”. Was the original frame gold? Very likely. “People often only

The wonderful climate means you can go snorkelling, surfing or kayaking in December in Las Canteras. Don’t be surprised if you see Santa Claus with his surfboard under his arm as some surf schools give Christmas a light-hearted wink with Santa imitations.

Music is an ever present in the Canaries’ biggest city and outdoor concerts are a major feature of the festive period also. The big Three Kings Night in Triana is one of the most eagerly-awaited of the year and is very special.

We head today to the southern side of El Hierro, also known as the Island of the Merdian, to discover one of its most special spots: Tacorón beach. Our walk begins in Taibique, the main town in the municipality of El Pinar.

Starting out on Calle El Roque, we follow the signs for Trail PR-EH 1.1, which heads out of town via the Los Pajeros neighbourhood and after around half a kilometre links up with the HI-4 road to La Restinga.

We follow this for just over one kilometre as far as the small hamlet of Los Llanos, where we leave it and head into the fertile plain known as Hoya de Aguachicho. We walk through farmland and gradually make our way through terrain formed by young lava produced by the alignment of volcanic cones that have caused the island grow bigger towards the south over several thousand years.

We walk through farmland and gradually make our way through terrain formed by young lava We skirt around Tembárgena mountain and walk down Jurado hill as far as a place known as Los Nateros, in Hoya de los Roques, a small depression formed between the big Quemado, Chico and Grande rocks. Even though the landscape here is barren and arid, enough soil has built up in the depression to allow fruit trees such as figs to grow. At this point we are approximately 400m above sea level and it is time to resume our route downhill. We pass the Montaña Quemada volcano and Hoya de Aguajlebe on our right before joining the HI-410 road, which we follow as it heads right. After just a hundred metres, we leave the paved road by taking a small path on the left, but we rejoin it again a little further on. All that remains is to walk just over half a kilometre to Tacorón beach for a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Mar de las Calmas sea.

Remarks: the walk is almost entirely downhill so should be avoided if you suffer from knee problems. Also, as the island’s south side is sunny and has high temperatures all year, make sure you take sufficient water, cream and protection from the sun.

MACRO FIT, CANARIANS WHO ARE MARKET LEADERS IN THE CANARIES Gym chain Macro Fit celebrated its tenth birthday in 2023 by opening Macro Fit Santa Cruz, its ninth gym.

Leading sports management company Lude Gestiones y Servicios opened its first private gym in 2013 in the refurbished Macro Indoor Pádel, in what used to be the popular Castillo de Agüimes nightspot. NT for Loro Parque Fundación

LORO PARQUE FUNDACIÓN MAKES AN INVESTMENT OF 1.6 MILLION DOLLARS TO MITIGATE THE EFFECTS OF THE SIXTH EXTINCTION Loro Parque Fundación has decided, in its latest board meeting composed of world experts in biodiversity, to allocate an extraordinary endowment of 1.6 million dollars.

This investment was determined after a comprehensive analysis of conservation and species rescue projects that organizations from around the world have submitted to to the Foundation for support. This is not the first time that the organization has committed in this way. It is a consistent action that falls within the organization’s commitment to protecting all species on the planet.

This is made possible because of the financial support that Loro Parque has delivered over the years. Loro Parque Fundación, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year, has developed 240 projects in 37 countries over its existence, resulting in the rescue of 12 species from extinction. This year, 74 projects are underway that will make a difference in the prospects of many species and ecosystems.

The financial contribution of the foundation has always been substantial, with an annual donation of 1 million dollars, which was increased by a quarter of a million for the “cambio” project, co-financed with the Government of the Canary Islands. The funds come from donations that Loro Parque Fundación receives altruistically and are entirely devoted to project implementation.

THE CHARMS OF THINGS OLD PREVAIL OVER MASS TOURISM MODELS The Fuerteventura municipality of Tuineje has an area with places to swim, a village with a mid-20th century feel to it, and a generally calm sea that makes it one of the top leisure zones on the coast, a far cry from the mass tourism model. Admittedly, it has grown more than it should have; a golf course typical of the developmentalist vision was built on its doorstep (even if some would argue that this is still a green space); and the period of the 1970s and 80s, when this was a haven for nostalgic people wanting a Canary Island coastline without the cement and concrete, is long gone. However, Las Playitas - the name of this charming corner next to the well-known town of Gran Tarajal - retains an aroma of authenticity (and even of fishing) that you would be hard pushed to find in other towns on the Fuerteventura coast. A coast that, like few in the Canaries, offers prime examples of an unedifying model that combines excessive building with true paradises of beach, sand and endless swims in the most absolute and wild solitude.

People from the other islands who visited Las Playitas in the 1970s and 80s and return today will still find the echoes of a typical small town in southern parts of the Canary Islands. Although economic and tourism development has stripped it of much its romanticism, it still retains a certain halo of authenticity.

Although there are parts with fine black sand, many others have small and not so small stones That said, it now has many more streets, many more houses, apartments and districts than before.

There is no denying this. The seafront road is in keeping with today’s times: there is a golf course (which was controversial in its day) and even a resort hotel.

Yet it still retains that historical flavour as a little fishing village which, not without difficulty, has steered relatively clear of the unbridled development and madness of massification seen in many other coastal towns in the Canaries.

Perhaps it is because a diminutive name like Las Playitas (Little Beaches) and the inherent characteristics of these small coves were incompatible with the model of endless hotels and apartments. Another factor may have been that these swimming spots have black and greyish sand, together with pebbles

and rocks, and lack the long golden-sand and solitary expanses typically associated with Fuerteventura, except for the Los Pobres beach. It may also be that the nearby beach and port of Gran Tarajal were sufficient for those looking for that kind of thing and a combination of the drive of various local residents and a good dose of rational urban planning meant that matters never really got out of hand. Whatever the reason, there is no disputing that if someone enquires about a coastal village with an old-time flavour in Tuineje, and perhaps even the entire east coast of Fuerteventura, most who know the island well will immediately think of Las Playitas, particularly if you are in or near Gran Tarajal.

Getting there is relatively simple. Just follow the FV-4 road towards Gran Tarajal and take one of the exits (on your left or right, depending on which direction you are driving from) and they will take you to the FV-512. Once on this road, getting to Las Playitas is very quick and easy. You travel through some hills and soon see the golf course, resort hotel and the Los Pobres beach, a name (‘The Poor’) that contrasts sharply with its surroundings in recent decades. This beach is much bigger than the others in the area. We soon enter the town streets (passing the Breñamen football club ground) and it is best to park as soon as you find a spot because you could end up driving round endlessly and needlessly.

Finding the Miramar promenade, the typical seafront road in these small towns, is also easy. Once

there we will have to decide if we want a swim in the little nearby coves or at the small fish dock (aside from the harbour in Gran Tarajal, this was once one of the main centres of artisanal fishing in this part of the Island) or if we prefer to follow the path on the right and enjoy inlets, headlands, volcanic rock and the beach at Los Pobres, which although large, is a far cry from the massive golden beaches at Pájara, Corralejo, Cofete, El Cotillo…

Location: east Fuerteventura, in the municipality of Tuineje.

Near the coastal town of Gran Tarajal, which has a harbour and beach.

Although there are parts with fine black sand, many others have small and not so small stones.

Generally speaking, however, the location is very pleasant. In addition, the sun is a regular here and, despite not offering the tranquility of the 70s and 80s, the beach is still a haven of peace compared to many other towns. As an added bonus, the sea is usually calm although great care is recommended when this is not the case, as well as with the currents in some sections at certain times.

Nudist beach: no.

Lifeguards: yes.

Surfing beach: no, although surfing is possible in some parts at times.

Restaurants: restaurants in Las Playitas village.

Toilets: no Showers: no.

Sunbeds and umbrellas: no.

Adapted for the disabled: there are no barriers on the nearby seafront road although this is not the case in the swimming areas, except the fishing ramp.

Parking: yes.

The area has much to offer in terms of food and drink also, with restaurants that have been around for many years as well as newer ones with newer culinary styles. Unsurprisingly, however, fish and seafood predominate in a location that has always had close ties to old-style fishing, whether by rod or in the small boats of the fishermen of old. Indeed, many still choose Las Playitas for a day’s fishing.

Beyond the rod, reel and nylon, if in the municipality of Tuineje you are looking for a place that retains an authentic flavour with modern touches, near-guaranteed sun, lovely swims in a normally tame Atlantic, and excellent food, Las Playitas is unquestionably an excellent choice. If not, Fuerteventura offers huge beach options, so there loads of alternatives available.

Public transport: bus routes and taxis.

Dogs: yes, but not on the whole beach.

Interesting fact: although this is the easiest and shortest trip if you want something a little different in the Gran Tarajal area, nature lovers tend to head to the nearby lighthouse.

For this, you need to take an earlier turn-off which is well-signposted. The shore areas cannot be reached from here, but the lighthouse is well worth a visit for the views from the vantage point of the same name, particularly at dawn and dusk.

PREVENTION AND RISKS OF OBESITY IN YOUNG CHILDREN Child obesity is a public health problem that affects the physical and mental health of children. Early detection and healthy lifestyle habits are the best gift we can give to the youngest members of the family. Identifying the underlying causes is another essential element for turning the situation around.

Child obesity is a multi-factor health problem that requires a multidisciplinary approach in order to obtain positive results. What was relatively rare decades ago is now a growing problem of alarming proportions in developed countries.

In 2019 a study was carried out in Spain of food, exercise, child development and obesity (ALADINO study) and monitored the weight status of Spanish schoolchildren aged six to nine. Of a total sample of 16,665 schoolchildren, 23.3 % were found to be overweight and 17.3 % obese.

By gender, girls were more overweight (24.7 % compared to 23.2 % of boys), although boys had the highest percentage of obesity, 19.4 % compared to 15 %.

What do we mean by child obesity?

As is well known, obesity is a chronic illness characterised by excess body fat which is accompanied by metabolic, physical and psychological manifestations. It is assessed with simple anthropometric measurements such as weight and height, used to calculate body mass index. The child health programme delivered by health centre paediatricians for children from birth to the age of eighteen is a vital resource for monitoring a child’s growth and development and is a tool for early detection of excess weight and obesity.

consequences as they can carry on into adulthood and worsen, causing problems of self-esteem, toxic relations with food, and triggering conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Christmas, which is just around the corner, is a period when over-eating and giving presents are the order of the day in most homes. It is a good time to think about giving health as a gift. Children naturally imitate what they see in adults and we can therefore capitalise on the opportunity to instil healthy habits such as physical exercise and healthy eating.

from an early age. Trying our hands at new activities and sports as a family is a way of getting to know each other and discover similar tastes, creating wonderful family moments and filling our backpacks with happy memories.

As we know, however, excess weight is not caused by food and a lack of exercise alone. Mental factors also have a direct impact on health. Following the pandemic, mental health problems became even more prevalent; living through COVID had serious negative consequences for children, including an increase in addictions, anxiety, social isolation… Learning to communicate and express our emotions and experiences can prove highly challenging for older people but doing this is absolutely crucial if we hope to address child health in a comprehensive way. Mealtimes are a great opportunity for family bonding, allowing each person to talk and say how their day has gone in terms of the positives and also things that have gone less well. A time to forget social media, TV and any other device that disconnects us.

The repercussions of obesity in very young children can bring even greater consequences A first step would be to add nutrients to meals (vegetables, fruit, seeds, nuts, meat, fish) and eliminate nutrient-free and high-calorie foods such as milkshakes, fizzy drinks, juices, ready-made sauces, processed foods, pastries ….

Planning weekly menus that involve the youngest in the family, jointly choosing dishes based on proper food and cooking together can change family life in the day to day and create more loving, healthy and safe bonds.

These small actions help us get to know ourselves better, detect problems in a timely manner and seek solutions together. Simple actions which, if built into our daily routine, enrich the family and improve everyone’s health.

Another good strategy is to exercise together as a family. As part of their daily routines, we should accustom children from an early age to playing games that require movement. Something as simple as a game of tag or skipping activates the body in a fun way and, if the adults join in too, fun and laughs are guaranteed. Hiking and sport are further options and are the best possible gifts we can give to our children, if practised

Ultimately, if we listen to the youngest members of the family we are likely to connect with our own childhood experiences, which increases our awareness and enables us to help our children live theirs positively. Life tends to repeat itself with other scenarios but mostly with the same story lines. Don’t miss out on the chance to develop together as a family and give the greatest gift of all: quality time and health.

VOLUNTEERING AND MENTAL HEALTH: PLACING VALUE ON TIME

The moment we realise that time is our most precious asset is a personal revolution. However, if we devote part of that time voluntarily to supporting a just cause or a cause that promotes the common good, that personal revolution becomes social transformation.

That is the legacy built by the more than sixty people who currently volunteer with AFES Salud Mental (Mental Health) and are a key group for the organisation. Every year, on 5 December, we show them our appreciation on International Volunteer Day. According to the latest Canary Islands’ Health Survey, 27% of the population of the islands are at risk of suffering a mental health problem, a percentage that increases with lower levels of education and employability. The findings are in line with World Health Organisation forecasts that one in every four people will experience some form of psychological issue at some stage in their life.

The actions are part of the project entitled “Promotion and training for mental health volunteering: placing value on time”, which is funded by the Canary Island government’s Department of Social Welfare, Equality, Youth, Children and Families.

Founded in 1982, AFES Salud Mental is a non-profit organisation that seeks to address the personal, social and community needs of persons with mental health problems, their families and those close to them. To that end, the organisation provides resources, fosters new lines of recovery work, and combats on a daily basis the ongoing stigma and prejudice surrounding mental health problems. It reaches more than 4600 people each year.

A total of 102 volunteers worked with our organisation in 2022, sixty-three of them women and thirty-nine men.

Twenty-seven of them contributed their experience face to face: direct contact is proven to help break down prejudices and misconceptions about people diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, while also helping them progress towards recovery.

Nelson Mandela Forum 9 February Renowned Italian singer-songwriter and pop musician Claudio Enrico Paolo Baglioni has forged a career spanning more than five decades. Some of his songs from the 1970s have become icons of Italian culture, particularly Questo piccolo grande amore, which was voted the Italian song of the century in 1985.

Tenerife Espacio de las Artes Until February 2024 This exhibition takes its name from two novels that share a title, by Carmen Laforet (1963) and Emilia Pardo Bazán (1889).

In both, the ever-present sun sets in motion a series of seemingly trivial incidents that end up altering the lives of the main characters, while the others seem to remain unchanged, on their guard against anything that contravenes the norms. Martín and Asís Taboada, respectively, navigate through a reality that leaves them stunned and exhausted, one they can no longer remain on their guard against and which leads to a clear context of ruin. Painters José Martín (1922-1996) and Sofía Bassi (1913-1998) appear to reveal this collapsing world, probably because their own personal experiences, which see them relegated to the margins, shape stories far removed from the history of art.

The Geometria Mundi exhibition dedicated to Luis Caruncho simultaneously covers all the fields in which the A Coruña painter and sculptor worked.

It allows visitors to immerse themselves in the creative world of the artist through over one hundred works from his sixty-year career. The works range from his early approaches, including a piece from 1949, until 2012. Luis Caruncho, who died in 2016, was a renowned artist in the A Coruña, popularly known as the city of Hercules.

His contributions include not only his intense activity as a painter and sculptor of so-called geometric abstraction but also his design work in a broad range of areas, particularly his many architectural contributions.

Marinated rabbit paté with guava jam Aridani Alonso–Gran Canaria Ingredients: Rabbit liver paté; guava paste; flake salt; lemon zest; slices of toast with rosemary; caramelised nuts; sorrel leaf.

Cut tomatoes into quarters and simmer with the sugar and cinnamon. Crumble the cheese and shape into a truffle for coating with gofio. Once the jam has reduced, leave to cool and serve with the cheese truffles.

Rabbit liver paté: 1 kg liver; salmorejo (garlic, cumin, paprika, oregano, parsley, seed oil). 500 ml cream; brandy; salt; pepper; 100 g butter; lemon; 3 leaves of gelatine. Bottle the liver with the salmorejo and salt and place in the fridge for one day; remove from fridge and drain. Add a drop of oil, flambé with the bandy until it is burned off, then add the cream, salt and pepper. Cook for 10 min on low heat.

Remove from heat and add hydrated gelatine; beat and add the butter, lemon zests and juice. Mix and strain. Leave to cool on a cooking plate and then flatten the paté (2 cm thickness). Once cool, divide into portions.

Serve: Add a little lemon zest and the salt flakes to the pâté; sweet guava sauce and caramelised walnuts on the side.

Limpet soup Samuel Morales–Tenerife Ingredients: 500 g limpets; 1 onion; 1 carrot; 1 potato; 1 cup concentrated tomato; 3 litres fish stock. Salt, pepper and coriander mojo.

Preparation: Chop the potato, onion and carrot. Gently fry in olive oil; add limpets and stir until shells detach. Add tomato concentrate and fish stock; cook until potato is done. Remove shells, leaving

Creamy coconut with caramelised El Hierro pineapple

Orlando Ortega–Lanzarote Choose seasonal fish and seafood, which need to be fresh and each cooked to the required degree before adding to the base sauce.

Ricardo Hernández–Tenerife Ingredients: 2 pineapples; 400 ml coconut milk; 200 ml coconut oil; 200 g grated coconut; coconut essence (optional); 1 litre whipping cream; 500 g cream cheese; 300 g sugar; 6 leaves gelatine (unflavoured).

Ingredients: Sauce (roasted fishbone stock). 2 kg fish bones; 1 medium-sized onion, with ski; ½ leek; 1 medium tomato without seeds; 10 cl white wine; 4 litres of water; 1 bay leaf; 1 sprig of fresh thyme; parsley; 5 cl of medium-strength olive oil. Oven-roast the bones for 40 minutes at 230º.

Preparation: Cut the pineapples into cubes so they retain their flavour when caramelised. Brown them in a frying pan; add half their weight in sugar and mix together to obtain a golden honey-like appearance. In a pot, mix the liquids, add the cream, coconut milk and coconut oil, and then the cream cheese and sugar to dilute them in the mix. Take a bowl with cold water and moisten the gelatine to prevent it from sticking. After around five minutes, add the strips to the mix one by one, followed by the other ingredients and turn off the heat. Leave to cool and place in the fridge.

Meanwhile, gently fry the vegetables in just enough oil and ensure they are cooked through. Add the white wine to the fish bones to release and obtain the juice. Add the water and cook on medium-high heat for a further 40 minutes.

Strain and leave to sit.

Escabeche sauce: 150 g fresh bread cut into cubes; 1 onion; 1 carrot; 2 sprigs of fresh thyme; 1 bay leaf; 5 grains of black pepper; threads of Canarian saffron; 1 spoonful of paprika; ½ sweet pepper from La Palma; 30 cl dry white wine; 10 cl wine vinegar and 10 cl medium-strength olive oil suave.

Once cold, the mix is then beaten with a mixer and the grated coconut and coconut essence added until the desired strength of taste is achieved. The caramelised pineapples can be cut with a knife to release flavour and liquid. The mix and pineapple can be stored in the fridge in sealed jars.

Fry the bread in oil and once fried take it out and add the onion and carrot and gently fry gently for 10 minutes on low heat. Add the other ingredients and cook for a further 10 minutes. Return the bread to the pan along with 2 l of fishbone stock, having first removed the herb

To serve: place the caramelised pineapple at the bottom and top with the creamy coconut mix. Decorate with a leaf of mint (optional).

They also fish in international waters in the South Atlantic. The aims of our organisation include improving the sustainability of fishing given that the responsible management of marine resources is crucial to long-term sustainability. BASIC STEPS FOR LEARNING TO APPRECIATE A GOOD WINE

The first step is to listen (even if this sounds odd in the case of still wines); you need patience to focus on listening to the sound made by the wine as it is poured into the glass. This will provide early information on whether it is light or full-bodied, bright and easy or complex and deep, with a lingering taste. Particularly in the case of sparkling wines.

The second is to look: knowing how to look at wine is knowing how to love it. You can see the droplets of the tears or legs, the viscosity. Try and forget all else and concentrate on the nuance, the tonality, the colorants contained in the grape. In blind tastings, this helps provide information on the age of the wines and the grape variety. Rotate the glass and look at the evolution of the wine; in whites, you can see a palette ranging from straw yellow to deep gold; in rosés, from young raspberry pink to the skin of an onion; in reds, the entire range of red

Wines have a fascinating diversity of aromas, from delicate floral and fruity fragrances to the strongest aromas of animals and chemicals. Next, swirl the wine in the glass and take a moment to differentiate between the aromas. All these have different origins: most stem from the grape variety and terroir, while others arise during the winemaking processes, such as fermentation and ageing.

The third step is to smell, the most complex of all; this is the one we need training in. The first aspect to mention is the intensity of the perfume: place the glass under your nose and inhale for a second to sensitise your senses.

(roses, violets, jasmine…), spice (cinnamon, vanilla, clove, aniseed, liquorice), earthy (mushrooms, truffle, soils), woody, empyreumatic (eucalyptus, tobacco, honey), fermentation (butter, yeast), animals (horse, stable, leather…) — often manifest in older and intense wines, and there may even be chemical aromas (for example, petrol in Riesling and Godello wines).

After tasting – when we subject the wine to our taste and touch – it is time to check the aspects of the wine: acidity, tannins, alcohol, body, harmony and finish. Tannins are essential to quality: these natural polyphenols are found in the seeds, leaves and skins and also in the wooden barrels. Tannins can stabilise the wine and protect it from oxidation.

Acidity helps preserve wines longer as they age. Most wines have a pH between 2.5 and 4.5 and they may contain various types of acids (tartaric, malic, citric, among others). Wines with very high acidity are as tart as lemon zest, while wines with lower acidity are as smooth as Greek yogurt.

The olfactory phase is the one I find most exciting because the aroma of a wine grows in the glass, changing through contact with the oxygen, and helps us remember the best times of our life -

Alcohol greatly influences the taste and ageing of wine, as well as affecting our health. It can be bitter, sweet, spicy and oily at the same time. Moderation is the key to healthy drinking of alcohol and you should not drink more than your body is capable of metabolising.

Our body produces endorphins when our sense of smell is stimulated by pleasant aromas and we experience optimism.

A great wine always puts a smile back on your face.

It is time to talk about the sensations, the texture of the wine, its persistence; time to dream about the most noble of all drinks. Time to say what you feel, without fear of what others might say.

Complexity manifests itself through many different aromas and taste sensations.

Persistence in the mouth lets us explore whether our taste buds have been coated in the rich tannins. The balance between persistence and strength is important. Like everything in life, all the parameters must be in harmony. When tasting, another key element to become more passionate about the fascinating world of wine is love.

We begin to appreciate the smell by closing our eyes, which is when we look for the primary, secondary and tertiary aromas. When the wine warms on the palate, we note the expression of the aromas at the back of the mouth and verify if it delivers what it promised in the nose. Retronasal olfaction is crucial to gauge the character of the wine. Don’t forget that checking the sensations felt after swallowing is not romantic but rather twice the pleasure.

News from Binter

BINTER LAUNCHES MADRID FLIGHTS WITH ITS TRADEMARK QUALITY SERVICE Binter held a press conference recently to announce details of two new flight connections between the Canary Islands and Madrid from 1 February 2024. The new routes will see sixteen flights a day between the Canaries and Madrid, four in each direction to/from Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The flights were officially unveiled in October at the regional government headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and Binter president Rodolfo Núñez in attendance. Tickets for the flights have already gone on sale.

Rodolfo Núñez announced that the flights to Madrid from Tenerife and Gran Canaria will begin on 1 February. “This is a project that has become reality thanks to the engagement and enthusiasm of all who work at Binter, an aspect I want to emphasise on this special day.

We will use five new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, we are hiring and training crews, technicians and personnel from various departments and areas, and we are about to open Binter’s first ever base outside the Canary Islands. We are doing all this because our clients and society in general have called on us to do so; there is a gap in the market for a non low-cost airline to complement existing provision and we believe that we have a duty to continue to position Binter as the airline for all Canarians and the Canary Islands.”

Núñez explained further that “Binter offers another way of flying, one different to the largely low-cost offer currently available on these routes. We believe it will be very well received, thanks to our service that is geared to providing quality to the customer from when they purchase a ticket to their arrival in the destination. It is the Canarian way of flying, one which our passengers already

appreciate greatly.” He insisted also that “Binter will continue its commitment to the Canary Islands, facilitating connections with the other five islands at no extra cost thanks to our average of 210 daily inter-island flights.”

The Madrid routes will be served by five new Embraer 195-E2 aircraft which offer state of the art technology, sustainability and noise reduction. The five planes will join the airline’s fleet in the coming months. Three will be based in Madrid and two in the Canaries (one in Tenerife North and the other in Gran Canaria).

CARING FOR OUR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT INSPIRES ‘EIGHT YEARS, EIGHT ISLANDS’ PROJECT Preserving our mountains is vital to the future of the planet. Looking after our Islands’ natural spaces is essential because of the wealth of natural and landscape features they offer.

That is the spirit behind the Eight years, Eight islands project which consists of environmental actions on a different island every year. Started by employees at Atlántica Handling and extended in 2023 to the other Binter system companies, the project was launched primarily to enhance environmental awareness and corporate social responsibility by carrying out work in both areas to learn firsthand about their needs.

The first initiative dates back to 2018 and was carried out in Gran Canaria in the form of Atlántica Handling sponsors a forest, an event which included, among others, a reforestation activity. Fuerteventura was chosen for the following year’s project, called Ecological Scenarios: from garbage to nature, which aimed to showcase and disseminate the is-

land’s natural and cultural heritage. The main activity carried out was the collection of waste and microplastics.

As a result of COVID-19, the initiatives envisaged for the following years were unable to continue. The project was resumed in 2022, this time on La Palma, and was organised jointly with Canarina Ecoturismo to remove cat tails, an invasive species of plant that has become widespread in different parts of the Canaries.

For the fourth project it was the turn of the island of La Gomera. Again with help from Canarina Ecoturismo, the Forest of Water event saw a group of twenty-five workers come together to remove cat’s ear, another invasive plant species, from Garajonay National Park.

TWO YEARS OF DIRECT A CORUÑA FLIGHTS This month marks the second anniversary of Binter’s direct flights to A Coruña, which commenced on 2 December 2021. In that time the route has grown in strength and attracted increasing numbers of passengers. Binter connects A Coruña airport (LCG) with the Canaries twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, facilitating weekend breaks as well as longer trips.

The Thursday flight departs Gran Canaria (LPA) at 08:15 and lands at the Galician airport at 12:50, with the return departing A Coruña at 12:35 and arriving in the Canaries at 14:25. On Sundays, the flight leaves the Canaries at 15:15 and arrives in A Coruña at 19:05. The return departs at 19:35, landing in Gran Canaria at 21:25.

FROM THE CLOUDS TO THE CITY OF STARS The first bars of the concert entitled Cuando las estrellas se apagan (When the stars stop shining) by this month’s featured person, Jesús Agomar, began to take shape on board one of our flights. A summer sunset on Las Canteras beach inspired the Los Realejos-born musician, who life and music led to the baton of the band of La Guancha (Tenerife), to narrate the birth, rise and demise of a star using wind, string, metal and percussion instruments. Premiered in December 2022 by the Gran Canaria Community Orchestra, the score travelled from the skies of the Canaries to Los Angeles to compete in the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, in the category of best live concert for visual media.
