Editorial

TWENTY YEARS AND MANY THANKS Twenty years ago, Binter changed hands from being part of national carrier Iberia to ownership by a group of Canarian investors, who acquired it after several attempts.

Twenty years may be nothing for some people but for our youngest clients it is an entire lifetime. Whether it is a lot or a little matters not: what is important is what we have done, what we have achieved, and how we have progressed during that time.

In 2002 Binter Canarias, already then a private company as its owner Iberia Airlines was private, had a fleet consisting of twelve ATR planes with an average age of 8.5 years.

The previous year it operated 46 945 flights and carried 2 200 000 passengers. Operations were limited to the Canary Islands and occasional flights to Madeira. Despite being a separate name, all its commercial management and handling operations were carried out by Iberia.

Twenty years on, the reality of Binter is very different. The Binter System comprises fifteen companies that, under the collective umbrella of the Binter brand, cover the entire chain of value in air transport, from sales and customer service to aircraft maintenance and aircraft component design and manufacture. From flight operations to airport activities and including administrative services, direct passenger care, the production and design of technology solutions, entertainment and staff training and development.

Twenty years on, we have twenty-four state-of-the art ATR aircraft and five Embraer E195-E2s, which will operate our 75 272 flights, 67 004 of them inter-island. We fly to 32 destinations beyond the Canaries, thirteen of them domestic destinations in the rest of Spain, ten in Africa and nine in Europe. Of these, four are located in the other islands that make up Macaronesia. We fly from all eight airports in the Canaries, with two primary bases in Gran Canaria and Tenerife North, and planes based also in Tenerife South, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma.

This has all been possible thanks to the 1700+ employees who carry out their work day by day with the aim of providing you with the best possible service.

For all the above, we want to say thank you to the following: To our customers, and the people of the Canaries in general, for supporting us and helping us to grow and do better. For loving us for what we are: your airline.

To the administrations who, with the occasional exception in the past, have helped us administer a unique and very particular model in the EU (PSOs), which has its benefits but also entails serious drawbacks that are overcome with understanding and goodwill.

To our workers and all those involved in our activities and operations, for enabling us to give customers the best service each and every day, and who have embraced and participated in the change of culture and have adapted constantly to new times through training and development.

Lastly, to our shareholders for their long-term vision, commitment to the company, and their gestures and support at difficult times.

We turn twenty happy at the achievements made and with the same drive for continued improvement that spurred us on at the beginning of the century.

Our hearts and minds continue to focus on how to overcome the physical barrier separating our islands by offering more flights, more seats, improved schedules, better planes and greater punctuality and reliability.

We will face the challenges associated with sustainability, improving our practices and procedures, and investing in assets that lessen our environmental footprint. We will grow sustainably.

We will invest in training not just for Binter’s own personnel but through initiatives that help young Canarians obtain qualifications in professions demanded by the air transport sector.

We will continue to grow, reaching new destinations in Spain, Europe and Africa, better connecting the Canaries to the outside world, and at the same time addressing the needs of the inter-island market by increasing flights, routes, schedules and services.

Last but not least, we will continue opening up the Islands’ airports with our heads and hearts set on achieving our mission: to be the airline of the Canary Islands, your airline.

There is no birthday without a birthday present and this year you have given us two: on 17 April we broke our record for the number of passengers carried on a single day and by the mid-point of the summer we will have notched up our 75 millionth passenger.

«MANY PLACE NAMES HAVE BEEN KEPT BECAUSE THE DESCENDANTS OF THE GUANCHES CONTINUED TO USE THEM» To speak of Antonio Tejera Gaspar (Arico, 1946) is to speak of one of the most prestigious scholars in the field of the history of the Canaries; someone who, although theoretically retired, cannot «sit still» and continues his research work. Tejera, a professor at La Laguna University, has focused primarily throughout his career on the study of pre-European cultures in the Canaries and has published a number of books and articles on the subject, including many on religious manifestations. Talking to Antonio Tejera is like travelling back in time to the past of the islands. the only form of communication … We were always listening to stories. I have had a close bond throughout my life with narrated events.

How did your love of history begin?

I always say that I am in a living relationship with oral history, which was the only form available in my early days.

At home, after dinner with my parents, there was always a night-time story by candle-light, the only light we had in those days. The stories could be about recent things or others further back in time; I think that some of the things they told me were from the 19th century. The custom of repeating oral traditions, in itself a way of making history, combined with the fact that I lived in a small town where everyone knew who had emigrated, how things were done, and the lack of books or radio meant that orality was

Your research and publications have aimed to clarify the origins of the islands’ native guanche population. Have you found anything conclusive, something we can be absolutely certain of?

In the world of research, if things don’t have an element of doubt to them, it’s not research [he laughs]. Seriously though, in this case there is much we do know for certain. We know where the guanches came from, as well as the origins of their language, their writing,

way of life, religious beliefs … Aspects that have been clarified completely include their North African roots and their links to the Libyco-Berber populations from which they originated. There are no doubts in that regard at present. They settled here later than initially thought, not before Christ. It probably occurred during the early years of the common era, not before. I am quite certain based on the data we have. Hundreds of datings using Carbon-14 and other techniques to date archaeological remains confirm with total precision a date that we can establish around the 1st century A.D., the time of the emperors Augustus and Tiberius. Is there a lot still to know? Of course, there is. Quite a lot, but we are fortunate that recent years have seen a combination not just of archaeological research in the strict sense but also genetics, chemistry, physics, biology and soil science, which have been of help too.

are learning more all the time, it remains a largely unknown world. However, we do know how they were integrated and how they mixed among themselves and, at times, with other populations; moreover, we know names and surnames …

We know all of that side and good work has been done already, although there is still much to do. Many place names have been maintained because they continued to be used by descendants of the guanches: Isora, Adeje, Abona, Chío, Chiguergue… Clearly, very profound transformations took place. The indigenous population adopted European culture, Castilian Spanish in this case, with relative ease. In any case, I always say that memories still survive, as does the guanche ceremony of the Virgin of Candelaria or the tradition surrounding Brother Peter, the saint. If you begin to dig a little, you find an entire world.

Now you are retired, do you still have the urge to do research? Does it ever leave you?

«As long as my brain continues to function and I still have the enthusiasm, I have no intention of stopping» -

Just before talking to you, I was working on my computer. I have not stopped a single day since I retired. The only difference is that I don’t have to teach or do paperwork or admin of any kind. I just work. As long as my brain continues to function and I have the enthusiasm, I have no intention of stopping. It would be very boring.

Bearing in mind the fate of the guanches after the Conquest, what percentage of native blood flows in our veins today?

What are you working on at present?

I can’t remember the exact figure but, according to genetic studies by Dr Rosa Fregel, who is doing great work, around 15-20% of the population today may have these genes. Above all, in more remote parts such as south Tenerife, La Gomera, or certain areas in La Palma, among others. Many authors such as Sergio Baucells Mesa have published works that examine the way of life the guanches adopted after the Conquest. Although we

My latest publication is a small book on the origins of La Laguna, in which I look at the city from the perspective of an archaeologist. I was keen to see how elements of archaeology can be applied to urban settings. The city is steeped in history as it dates back more than 500 years.

LOSING WEIGHT You might associate the above title with a loss of power or of negotiating capacity but that is not the sense we mean in this article: we are talking here about body weight. In this case, it appears that the less obese we are, the better our job, salary and promotion prospects. It is probably not the best time or place. Reading about this as you fly off to your summer holiday destination might give you psoriasis or something worse, particularly if you have already inflicted punishment on yourself trying to get into shape for the beach.

Everyone knows that being thin is good, healthy in the short and long term, attractive, and also that it requires a lot of effort in terms of avoiding or doing. Avoiding things which you like is a sign of self-control as well as a sign of sadness and giving in to the prevailing fashion. It is a pity but a fact of life. Then there is the other side: doing. Doing sport and exercise, making healthy food... a little more effort. It is downright expensive too. Do the test yourself: go to your local supermarket, grab a trolley and fill it to the brim with really healthy food and items. Then go to the checkout and pay for it all, if you have enough money. On another day, go back to the supermarket and fill the trolley with tasty things, all the ones that make you fat, are unhealthy and cause obesity, diabetes, glaucoma, cholesterol, mea-

sles, monkey virus and a thousand other ailments. I will give you odds of 5 to 1 or better that the hole in your credit card is at least 50% less than for the first trolley.

Trying to stay thin nowadays is in itself a business plan comprising three inter-related variables: calories, euros and time. It has been widely proven that, if you walk at a good pace for an hour every day, as long as you move your arms vigorously like Gurb in Eduardo Mendoza’s book, you can eat almost anything you want. On your spreadsheet nowadays you have to include how much it costs to find that hour per day, not to mention the energy required to overcome laziness if the plan is to go out for a walk when you get home from work.

It is practically impossible to keep in shape with this system.

same ‘rule’, a woman who is eleven kilos above average may earn up to 9734 euros less. The theory is valid for men also: the average salary of an obese male can be as much as 5931 euros lower (source: Expansión).

Other time-consuming options (even if less so) are gyms, jogging and, further down the scale, more fun ones such as padel tennis and Latin dance. As you can see, the less time required and the less laziness that needs to be overcome, even if the fun and dedication are greater, the fewer the calories burned off. Hence, the more fun you have, the more expensive the weekly healthy food shop is.

These differences are related not only to image bias: there is evidence of a direct link between obesity and productivity. By way of example, data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) indicate that, over a six-year study period in the United States, loss of productivity increased by 50% and visits to the doctor by 88% in an obese person compared to a healthy person.

In short, if you are heading off on holiday, my advice is to have a walk every day to compensate for the beach bar, i.e., offset what you have had there.

On a more serious note, short and long- term health is the most important factor behind trying to avoid obesity.

However, it is not the primary motivation to go on a diet or do sport: as you can imagine, it is our appearance.

Despite the above, obesity is on the increase throughout the world. According to the WHO, it has tripled since 1975, although the rise is unevenly distributed: more developed countries with higher economic capacity and higher levels of education and training have better weight control and lower obesity, while the reverse is true in less developed countries.

Little mention is made of this subject and, to my knowledge, there are not even any serious publications on it, at least in Spain. However, solid documentary evidence exists concerning the effect of obesity on our professional lives and the studies can be extrapolated to Europe and Spain, albeit with a correction factor.

Broadly speaking, it would appear that, whether or not we admit it, we all think similarly: «According to recent data, 65 % believe that a thin person finds work more easily that someone who is overweight, while 72 % consider obesity an obstacle to finding a partner.

It is striking that almost 40 % want to lose weight for appearance or social reasons, not their health» (source: Asepeyo).

Let me give some information: The Wall Street Journal published the salary differences associated with specific physical appearances. According to research carried out by the University of Florida, a woman who weighs eleven kilos less than average can earn 10,947 euros a year more. According to the

ANTIGUA RECEIVES FIRST BLUE FLAG Antigua’s councillors for Accessibility and Trade, Jesús Montañez and Pedro M. Armas, took delivery of the blue fag awarded to the Fuerteventura municipality for the quality of its Playa de Castillo beach.

This is the first time that an Antigua beach has been awarded the European certificate of quality and excellence. It serves as recognition of the daily efforts of local businesses and hotels who have consistently worked towards to

NEARLY A THOUSAND RUNNERS GET CHANCE FOR MOONLIGHT RUN AS FULL MOON TRAIL RETURNS

Tijarafe is renowned for being the first town in the Canaries to host a night run.

The Naviera Armas Full Moon Trail has grown from strength to strength and, although the pandemic prevented the celebration of its 10th anniversary, 16 July 2022 will see almost a thousand runners enjoy a unique event, which is highlighted

in red on the calendars of mountain runners in the Canaries and further afield.

Combining sport and tourism, the race provides a major boost for the tourism sector in Tijarafe, its five distances enabling runners to enjoy beautiful trails bathed in the light of the full moon.

TENO ROAD REOPENS

Tenerife’s governing Cabildo completed the urgent roadworks on the TF-445, better-known as the Teno Road, in Buenavista del Norte in June. The road has been reopened but with the same restrictions as those in place before the work commenced. It may only be used by private vehicles with special authorisation or by public transport buses. The recently-completed work saw part of the

steel netting erected to prevent rockfalls replaced on the left side of the road, the corporation announced in a press release.

Tenerife roads councillor, Enrique Arriaga, emphasised that the roadworks have helped restore safety, enabling local residents, workers, and visitors to use the road once more and enjoy the area, according to the EFE news agency.

ROHEN MAQUINARIA CHOSEN AS BEST DISTRIBUTOR IN SPAIN IN 2021

Canarian firm Rohen Maquinaria has scooped German multinational Jungheinrich’s 2021 Best Distributor in Spain Award for the sale of forklifts.

Rohen Maquinaria was created in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 2005 and was Jungheinrich’s official distributor in the province before the distributorship was extended to the whole of the Canaries two years ago. The firm has achieved a very high market share in forklifts and is renowned not only for its professionalism and servicing but also for its innovative character, which aligns excellently with the German brand.

The award, made for the first time this year, is based on quantitative and qualitative considerations and takes into account turnover as well as the work of the Canarian firm as the brand’s representative in the Canary Islands.

HOSPITALITY SECTOR SEES RISE IN EMPLOYMENT AT START OF SUMMER SEASON The figures speak for themselves in the infographic prepared by the Spanish Confederation of Hospitality Businesses (CEHE) on the evolution of employment in May 2022, which shows an increase with respect not just to 2021 but 2019 also. The accommodation sector has recorded higher jobs growth than the bar and restaurant sector, which has not quite returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Broken down by categories, the number of bar and restaurant employees averaged almost 1.4 million, 17.9 % up on the previous month (208 938 workers more). This represents a slight fall of 0.1% compared to May 2019 (two thousand fewer).

In the accommodation sector, the number was 370 791, a rise of 54.7 % compared to the previous year (131 035 workers more). With respect to the figures for May 2019, the figure was up 2.1 % (7708 more), according to the CEHE.

TEGUESTE UNVEILS GIANT MURAL HIGHLIGHTING THE ROLE OF RURAL WOMEN

The town of Tegueste has unveiled a giant mural dedicated to rural women on Calle Prebendado Pacheco. The mural is the initiative of the Mamachama Association - in collaboration with the council’s department of equality and the island’s governing Cabildo - and stems from work undertaken with a group of twelve local women on the role of rural women and how this has evolved. Equality councillor

Ricardo Chico explained that the giant mural by muralist Florencia Durán is the product of various sessions led by the Mamachama association.

The mural depicts four women from the town who, wrapped in distinctive features of Tegueste such as grape vines and the backdrop of the ‘Mesa de Tejina’ hills, link hands as a symbol of unity.

LANZAROTE DISCUSSES RENEWABLE ENERGY IMPLEMENTATION MODEL

The latest general meeting of the governing board of Lanzarote’s Biosphere Reserve Council discussed the model the island wishes to follow to implement renewable energies.

Council member Elena Solís, who added that, although «we have to take on board the change in energy model and drive forward renewable energies on the island, we must do so in an orderly manner».

«Lanzarote declared a climate emergency in 2019 and the complexities of energy problems places the island at a critical turning point», said Biosphere Reserve

She added further that the proposals tabled include the promotion of clean energies and improvements to lighting in public spaces.

A LUSH GARDEN IN MID-ATLANTIC Infinite greenery stretches out before you in lush meadows, laurel forests and tea plantations on what is arguably the most spectacular and diverse island of the Azores archipelago. Its volcanic origins have shaped otherworldly landscapes consisting of unreal lakes inside volcanoes, springs which are testament to the properties of the waters of the Azores, and beaches where you can enjoy all that this island carved in mid-Atlantic has to offer.

The biggest and most populated of the islands in this Portuguese archipelago, São Miguel is 747 km2 in size (65 km long x 16 km wide) and is home to 130 000 people, half of the entire population of the islands. Its unspoilt vegetation produces very different landscapes characterised by an extensive range of tones of green. Green that becomes blue in the Lagoa do Fogo, a giant volcanic crater lake surrounded by dense vegetation. Even bigger is the Sete Cidades lake situated in the far west of the island, very close to a lovely church. A bridge divides it into the Blue Lake to the north and the Green Lake to the south, making it even more attractive. To admire it, you should make your way up to the Vista do Rei viewpoint, situated at a height of 550 metres, although others nearby also offer stunning views, including Grota do Inferno or Cerrado das Freiras.

ARAGON’S STEPPE It barely rains, the winters are Siberian and the summers Saharan; climatic conditions that make Los Monegros a geological steppe and a demographic desert. A region whose population’s character is forged by emptiness, silence and wind.

Los Monegros has carved a place for itself between Zaragoza and Huesca. It is a giant outdoor natural science laboratory where flora and fauna outnumber the human population. Its original name, Montes Negros (Black Mountains), dates back to its Arab past and is owed to the pine trees and junipers that covered the steppe then and still do so today. The

area is home also to prehistoric sites and religious, military and civil architecture, an example of the last category being the indulgence that is the small railway station in Tardienta, a town with a population of less than one thousand. Once you have landed, a car is the best way to travel and the A-1104 is the best road to see the authentic Los Monegros.

In these arid surroundings, absence represents beauty and the Alcubierre mountains form a natural border separating the provinces of Zaragoza and Huesca. Republicans and rebels dug trenches in these hills, from where they watched more than shot at each other. In his book Homage to Catalonia, George Orwell narrates his time at the Aragonese front and one of the Monegrino routes that recall the civil war today is named after him.

They weigh no more than twelve kilos and are fed solely on their mothers’ milk and cereal. Eating well is part of the DNA of this steppe.

The small town of Lanaja is located in a depression surrounded by a ridge where caves are carved in the rockface. These caves served as hiding places during the Spanish civil war and were later used to store wine. In the 19th century, Los Monegros had nearly six thousand hectares of vineyards and an extensive wine-making culture, with the wine produced used for local consumption. «Wine was the Red Bull of those days. Farmers would drink around two litres every day while working in the fields», says Fernando Mir, founder of local winery El Vino del Desierto (Desert Wine).

The phylloxera plague and the arrival of irrigation, including the building of the Los Monegros Canal, led to the demise of the area’s wine-growing tradition. The six thousand hectares have been reduced today to eighty, seven of which belong to Fernando, who hopes to put Lanaja back on the wine-producing map with his Sed (red) and Duna (white) wines.

Where there is wine there is always bread. In the Ecomonegros bakery in Leciñena, Ana serves bread that tastes just like it did in the old days. Thanks to the

stubbornness of an uncle who was determined to revive the wheat seed known as Aragón 03, you can now eat the same bread today as the local old-timers did. Bread which some make using sourdough, sea salt and fresh barley yeast, whereas others prefer rye, salt and water. «The most important thing we have done is not make bread but to create a use for a seed», says Ana. In Bujaraloz, a town on the NII road half-way between Zaragoza and Barcelona, many travellers stop at the El Español Bar to eat young Monegrino lamb. These lambs weigh no more than twelve kilos and are fed solely on their mothers’ milk and cereal.

Eating well is part of the DNA of the steppe.

On the outskirts of this pass-through town, which hosts a famous short film festival, are the Bujaraloz-Sástago salt flats.

All that remains of the flats are the old buildings where the salt was prepared and the cracked terrain which is crying out for water. Water that was plentiful millions of years ago in Jubierre, a seabed that is now the iconic landscape of Los Monegros. The many ravines here were formed by runoff, while the ‘torrellones’ or ‘tozales’ are the area’s unique geological formations; tall sentries with feet of sandstone and heads of rock. The same material which the inhabitants of this steppe region, wolves with filed fangs who have shown their determination to do more than just survive, are made of.

MUST-SEES: The Pilar Basilica: an architectural jewel from Aragón’s baroque period, this is one of the most important centres of pilgrimage for the veneration of the Virgin Mary. Its interior houses two frescos by Goya. The 12 October, Día del Pilar, is Zaragoza’s big festivity.

Aljafería Palace: this palace-fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the only surviving example of Hispanic Islamic architecture from the Taifa of Zaragoza period (11th century).

Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park (Huesca) formed by four valleys that extend like arms around Monte Perdido, Europe’s highest limestone massif.

THE CIRCULAR SEA They are young men. They are the new cohort of seafarers and fishermen, even if actual regeneration at sea is minimal.

They persevere, however. Below is a snapshot of fishing in Tenerife, in the words of those who do it.

«We have always been fishermen in my family, ever since the days of my great-grandfathers. When I was four, I used to go out fishing with my grandfather and father. It’s a calling», says Airam Medero, who is licensed both for deep-sea fishing (pelagic species) and, in particular, more coastal fishing, including for grouper, parrot fish, wreckfish and white seabream. Tenerife’s artisanal fishing sector employs over two hundred boats, including Airam’s.

Another belongs to Jacobo García, who specialises in tuna. Both men fish out of Puerto Santiago. «My background comes from my father, who fished until he retired recently».

uncle and father fished together and one of my fondest memories is when my cousin and I would go out with them.

That is what made me decide I would work out at sea sixteen years ago». His 12-metre boat today has a crew of three.

Airam’s words have a staunch defence of fishing running through them.

«The high demand for fish here, especially due to tourism, means that many species that are brought into harbour are from Africa. Our local fish can’t cater for the existing demand and people have grown accustomed to things not from here». This explains his defence of native species and artisanal fishing. «People in restaurants should demand to see the labels to check where the fish came from and when and how it was caught ».

«We all fish in much the same way here. No industrial techniques are used» -

Examples include Canarian parrot fish, wreckfish, wahoo, island grouper.

Or pelagic species that live near the surface in deep seas and are famous for their migrations. Wahoo, bicuda, amberjack, dentex. Tuna. Airam’s red tuna ends up in tartar or some other raw

The two are living examples of a form of fishing by small boats with engines and crewed by family and friends. «My 36

format in renowned eating spots such as Casa Pancho, in Playa de la Arena (Santiago del Teide), where you can also order other local specialities such as phycid hake, the famous ‘cherne’ wreckfish (chargrilled in this restaurant) or bicudas, freshly landed by José, another local fisherman. «We all fish in much the same way here. No industrial techniques are used».

All that is required now is to toss the bait overboard to attract the tuna. Jacobo and his crew fish without reels, just bamboo rods and nylon. The tuna caught will end up in traditional restaurants or innovative venues such as the San Ho in the Hotel Royal Hideaway Corales Beach (La Caleta). Artisanal fishing techniques are always used; those handed down by our ancestors and which respect the diversity of island ecosystems. This ensures that the cycle continues and that the waves continue to carry the circular economy to our shores.

Jacobo cannot avoid a note of romanticism in his comments. His wife, Olivia König, lovingly shows off each skipjack, bonito or bluefin tuna caught by Jacobo.

«The first job is to prepare the tuna bait: mackerel, sardine, herrings or horse mackerel, which we attract from the boat by moonlight at night». And then it is a question of just waiting, which is what sea life is all about. Patience and vocation. Fishing with live bait at dawn and at dusk when the tuna come out.

The shearwaters lead them to the tuna and bluefin tuna. «They are very intelligent birds; they feed on the sardines and horse mackerel that swim underneath the tuna, so the birds act as our guide».

LA PALMA

The El Hierro wolf is actually a dog whose origins date back at least 200 years when it was first used by the island’s farmers for herding work. According to some theories, it was brought by the Conquistadors in the 15th century, although others argue that the dog was already present in the islands prior to the arrival of the Castilians.

Located in the 15th-century Franciscan Convent, the museum has an impressive interior and spartan and austere cloisters, complete with orange trees (a throwback to the building’s old Orange Tree Patio) which were planted by the heads of state of various European countries who gathered in La Palma for the inauguration of the Roque de los Muchachos Astrophysics Observatory in 1985.

Officially known as lobito herreño, which is also its popular name, it is one of the most iconic examples of Canarian fauna. However, the breed is not recognised yet and, at present, is just considered an ethnic group by the Royal Spanish Canine Association. Although it was on the verge of dying out due to the decrease in agricultural activities in the Canaries in recent decades, its friendly and loyal nature has seen it become a pet dog in many Canarian homes.

The museum has several sections, including archaeology, ethnology, natural sciences and nautical themes. It brings together other museums also such as the Museum of Fine Arts, with its Flemish works from the 16th century, and the Museum of Ethnography, which has pieces and collections relating to our traditions from the home, farming and crafts.

LA GOMERA Swimming Playa del Trigo

One of the most iconic spots in the Canaries and a must for anyone visiting Tenerife. Its setting and landscapes look like they are from another planet and it is rightly considered a location of great scientific interest and a point of reference for studies about the planet Mars.

In addition, it is home to a wealth of biological treasures, including endemic flora and fauna. Next to Teide stands the second highest mountain in the Canary Islands, Pico Viejo (Old Peak), at 3135 metres above sea level. The pair are the only mountains in the Canaries to exceed 3000 metres in height.

This is an ideal beach for those who love peace and quiet, as well as small and secluded beaches with lovely black sand and waves that are usually quite moderate. It is reached via a path, thus adding to the attraction for those wishing to take in the delightful views of the different La Gomera landscapes.

The Trigo Beach is also beautiful on account of its waters so keep some diving goggles handy to enjoy the wealth of undersea life on offer.

The guanches, the native inhabitants of Tenerife prior to the Conquest, called Mt Teide Echeyde - which means the ‘home of Guayota’, the evil. According to beliefs, Guayota abducted Magec, the god of the sun, and held him inside Teide.

GRAN CANARIA

Historic figure Benito Pérez Galdós Benito Pérez Galdós was born on 10 May 1843 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and died on 4 January 1920 in Madrid.

He was a Spanish novelist, playwright and newspaper column writer. The son of an army officer, he was raised in a middle-class Las Palmas family. On finishing his compulsory schooling in his home city, he moved in 1862 to Tenerife to study a degree in Arts and then to Madrid to study law, but he gave this up in 1868 to devote himself to his literary pursuits. In the Spanish capital he would participate in intellectual debates at the Atheneum and the Fornos and Suizo Cafés, where he fraternised with other artists and intellectuals of the period.

La Gomera.

He worked as journalist at the La Nación and El Debate dailies. Throughout his life, he spent lengthy periods in Santander. Galdós is considered one of the main exponents of 19 th-century realist novels.

LANZAROTE Gastro Wines

Lanzarote’s wines are a major gastronomic attraction in the Canary Islands.

The island has a wide variety of grape types, although whites predominate, particularly the volcanic malvasía grape.

It is grown in a sub-desert climate, buffeted by Saharan winds and on volcanic terrain, features which make this particular variety one of the most unique in Spain. It can be grown in two ways: in purpose-built sheltered holes, as in La Geria, or in vine ditches.

Galdós.

This form of cultivation is not conducive to the use of machinery and labours are therefore manual.

LA GRACIOSA

Canarian traditions Virgen del Carmen Festivities

Windsurfing.

The Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of La Graciosa. Her day is celebrated on 16 July, with a procession of boats and floral offerings in honour of all sailors and seafarers who have lost their lives at sea.

In the run-up to the celebrations, many different fiestas and outdoor dances are held, with an extensive programme laid on for those visiting La Graciosa in July. A church dedicated to the ‘Virgin of the Sea’, the other name used by locals to refer to her, can be found in Caleta de Sebo. It was built in 1945.

LA LLANÍA

Until Christopher Columbus ventured across the Atlantic, the island of El Hierro –the outermost of the “Fortunate Islands”, as the Canaries were known– was considered the end of the earth by Europeans. In this small and rugged Eden, where resources are scant and volcanoes and rugged volcanic landscapes plentiful, survival was extremely challenging for the essentially rural population.

On a rugged island characterised by a lack of water, the plains on the humid mountain tops, which tend to be covered in the mist blown in by the trade winds, provided the best lands for crops and grazing. They were also home to laurel forests, relics of the Tertiary Era which -after the various glacial periods- secured their last bastion in the archipelagos of Macaronesia. However, El Hierro’s forested areas declined drastically due to the need to produce food; the green woodlands found themselves increasingly relegated to the steep slopes of the north and a few isolated areas in the peaks.

This month’s proposed route is one of the island’s most striking and best-known. It is accessible, walker-friendly and easy, and also gives us the opportunity to venture into El Hierro’s woodlands.

We head into a dense forest dominated by firetree and tree heath and nearly always humid and shrouded in mist Our walk of approximately four kilometres begins at the Fuente de La Llanía, a wonderful vernacular example of water harvested from the mist. As in the vicinity of the so-called Sacred Tree (“Garoé”), this iconic well is fed by the drops of water carried in the wind and caught by the branches of tree heath. Colloquially known as “horizontal rain”, this amazing phenomenon played a key role in quenching the local population’s thirst in bygone days, both before and after colonisation by Europeans. From this spot at just over 1330 metres we begin a gentle descent that takes us into the dense forest dominated by firetree and tree heath and nearly always humid and shrouded in mist.

After approximately two kilometres, we emerge from the forest into more open surroundings, and start to walk up towards Hoya de Fileba, a pretty crater nestled on the line of volcanoes along the peaks of the island. Walking among the volcanic rock fragments, we head northwest in search of one of the headlands overlooking the immense El Golfo valley.

On arrival here, and before beginning the return journey, we stop at the La Llanía viewpoint to take in one of the most spectacular views found anywhere on El Hierro. Punta de Salmor, the Tibataje cliffs, the outline of the island of La Palma, and Punta de la Sal are just some of the amazing sights that stretch before us as we switch between the thrill of the views and the feeling of wonderment triggered by the thought of the devastating phenomenon that caused nearly half the island to collapse and fall to the bottom of the sea just 80,000 years ago. The scar left by that key event is what we see here.

Nearby places of interest: the Las Asomadas astronomical observatory in Tigaday Notes: short and easy. Some parts have forks in the path which allow you to walk a little further if you want.

Did you know? Along the walk there is an area called Bailadero de las Brujas (The Witches’ Dance Floor). According to legend, no vegetation grows here because of the rituals said to have been performed at this spot.

UNSPOILT AND SENSIENT PLEASURE TO BE ENJOYED VERY SLOWLY There are no buildings, no tarmac roads; what little noise there is comes from nature. The feeling of solitude, wellbeing and paradise is inevitable. Many will feel they have been searching for a spot like this for ages. Where is it? Very near, in fact… in north Lanzarote. Formally in the municipality of Haría although it is actually in the lovely Chinijo archipelago, in the southeast of the unforgettable island of La Graciosa.

Interesting fact: after the strenuous walk, you might have the impression that beyond this beach - whether you go up Yellow Mountain, go around it inland or swim along the shoreline - there will be more beaches on the south-eastern tip of La Graciosa. That is not the case. The coast is very challenging and rocky from here up to the spectacular Las Conchas beach, so it is best to relax and enjoy this little jar of beach essences.

This small island boasts a number of idyllic beaches, including Las Conchas and Los Franceses, but the crowning glory of its breathtakingly unspoilt and sensient pleasure is Las Cocinas beach.

A high point to be enjoyed very slowly, following a 30-45 minute walk from Caleta de Sebo. After the exertions of the walk, contemplating from above this small bay protected by Yellow Mountain is priceless reward; in this hidden spot the sea is very calm and delicately turquoise in tone, the sands are fine and golden, and the water refreshing. As an added bonus, washing off the perspiration of the walk in a place like this gives meaning to life. For the time you are there, at least.

It is known also as Yellow Mountain beach because of its location near one of the island’s most beautiful and spectacular peaks Stopping off for a swim on the way is a great idea before taking the path (or in some cases paths, given that they branch off, separate and then rejoin each other) along the hilltop - not the coast - to get to Las Cocinas. Walking up this small peak, you catch a glimpse of the desert-like territory ahead, with its deafening silence of rocks and millions of years of history.

The amalgam of ochre, yellow and black colours is also attractive although the so-called Yellow Mountain soon gives way to the coveted fine sands of the beach. As you approach, you gradually discover the beauty of the bay and the array of blues and greens worthy of a painter’s brush.

Reaching La Graciosa is not difficult.

You only need to make your way to the fishing village of Órzola in the northern municipality of Haría and from there catch one of the small ferries that make the crossing (around 25 minutes) to Caleta de Sebo. You will sail across the delightful Río, a stretch of sea between Lanzarote and La Graciosa which is famous for its near-still waters. Once on the island, there are three options if you want to head straight to Las Cocinas: hire a bike (highly recommended to get 58

Once down on the beach, the typical clichés immediately spring to mind: paradise, unspoilt, a haven for diving and nudism, an oasis of peace and solitude, perfume in a tiny bottle … or any other descriptor if your imagination becomes transfixed and slows to the point of being almost nullified. The problem –or rather the big advantage, the wonderful news, the best bit of all– is that they are all true.

None is out of place or fanciful: even the tiniest Russian doll will confirm this.

IMPROVING WITH THE HELP OF THE COMMUNITY Knowledge doesn’t take up space and is always on hand to help us. Knowledge of the resources available in the community to improve our quality of life is important information that we should not disregard. Learn from your environment and apply that learning to make your life healthier.

We are increasingly conscious of the footprints that our daily lifestyle has on us. Depending on our circumstances we may feel better or worse. The bustle of society generally prevents us from perceiving the impact on us of each situation, the subtle changes that build up gradually. Stopping and observing ourselves is crucial if we are to discover these.

Viewed from a more scientific perspective, as is known, public health defines the determinants of health as the set of personal, socioeconomic and environmental factors that condition the health of individuals as well as communities.

The Lalonde Report published in Canada in 1974 quantified the influence of the various determinants on people’s

health and found that lifestyle (43 %), the environment (19 %) and health care systems (11 %) together impacted on community health more than the genetic aspects of an individual (27 %).

Even if our local community does not have an official asset map, we can create one ourselves based on our needs. The first thing to do is to think about which resources might be of use to us and where they might be located.

Information can then be requested from NGOs, associations, sports clubs, volunteering organisations, cultural events, parks, day care centres, schools and community centres.

Clearly, lifestyle is the group of factors that most influences health. Decisions we take regarding rest, physical exercise, leisure, eating and managing our emotions end up determining our quality of life.

We should not overlook our own resources. We need to know our strong points and how to harness these to our benefit. Each one of us has specific qualities that make certain activities and resources more suitable for us.

It is often easy to identify all the factors in our environment that are harmful to us, including pollution, sedentarism, loneliness, eating processed and sugary foods, excessive workloads, conflict, toxic conversations …

We are less familiar, however, with health assets, that is, the resources and activities that make us stronger and help us maintain and improve our health and wellbeing, thus contributing to healthy habits.

There were probably fewer resources decades ago, but these were widely known by the entire population. In today’s industrialised world, where time is a scarce commodity, we are not so well connected to our surroundings to know what is available that might be of help to us.

Health assets can be found both in our own personal resources and in the community. Some Spanish regions have created working groups to map existing health assets so they can be recognised and used by each municipality.

As a result of this initiative, there is now an app called «Locate Health», which gives visibility to resources and activities that contribute to health in towns that are part of the Spanish Health System’s Health Promotion and Prevention Strategy.

Devoting a little time to discovering the available health assets is an investment in our health. If we also help make these known, we will probably forge closer ties with other people who in turn will provide us with more resources.

Moreover, given that we live in an online society, we can use social networks to facilitate this work.

The app helps identify, for example, parks with outdoor sport facilities, support groups, walking routes, and free council social services. In short, a wide range of options from which to choose the one best suited to us.

LANZAROTE’S ISLAND HOSPITAL RESUMES SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS ON GERIATRICS June saw Lanzarote’s Island Hospital hold its first scientific symposium since the Covid-19 pandemic. Organised by the Geriatrics and Cardiology Departments, the event focused on the use of anti-coagulants in elderly patients, with specialists in Cardiology, Hematology and Internal Medicine from the Health Service’s Lanzarote District taking part.

The specialists participated in two discussion panels organised by the multidisciplinary symposium with the aim of highlighting and sharing knowledge on the risks and benefits of anti-coagulant drugs in elderly patients. from the Lanzarote Health District and new resident doctors and nurses from the various health centres in Lanzarote.

SHRIMPS AND CANARY ISLAND WINE: FROM THE SEA TO A TASTE OF HEAVEN We know from experience that gastronomic pleasure lies not solely in the (ephemeral) act of eating if products sourced in the Canary Islands are on the table. The expectation, the liturgy, of savouring the moment is transformed into a feeling of satisfaction and wellbeing when we take our seat on the restaurant terrace and a plate of shrimps accompanied by ice-cold beer or chilled wine appears.

In the way of very few summer aperitifs, shrimps symbolise the time to switch off, a moment of relaxation and enjoyment as we savour each, one by one. These morsels quite simply taste of the sea.

The aromas and nuances we take in make us relive what our families taught us way back: these tasty crustaceans are a guaranteed appetiser in the summer when the sweltering heat has set in. Shrimps are the prelude to a range of simple yet emphatic culinary offerings in the Canaries which epitomise what was said above: a time to switch off as we savour, for example, a dish of pan-fried limpets dressed with mojo sauce or, why not?, octopus tentacles in oil, aged vinegar and hot pepper.

Returning to the subject of this piece, the Plesionika edwardsii –the scientific name for the soldier striped shrimp or Canarian shrimp– has whitish meat which is relatively consistent in texture and is high in quality. Although many diners prefer their shrimps boiled just as they are, their slightly sweet and almost creamy taste is ideal also for salads, with spaghetti, grilled, in ceviche, as carpaccio, fried, in an omelette, on a skewer, and even with fruit.

To return to the liturgy analogy mentioned earlier, we eat with profound veneration this marine product which is deep red in colour. A product that acquires sainthood status in one of Luis Benito’s rice dishes.

«These crustaceans deserve their reputation given that they are very rare. Big, brightly coloured, and with tasty, delicate meat», according to the description given in a Tweet by Spanish food critic Carlos Maribona (Salsa de Chiles). The expert communicator is right to praise a raw material that sparks wonder when exhibited by chef Luis Benito in Playa Blanca, near the Punta Pechiguera lighthouse.

«They are without doubt one of the most spectacular features of today’s gastronomic scene in Lanzarote. Due to their discovery and wonderful taste», says Lanzarote chef Orlando Ortega about what has become a standard-bearer of Canarian gastronomy. It is worth highlighting the efforts of local fishermen to ensure the sustainability of this ‘zero kilometre’ product and we can only hope also that the high demand does not lead to exorbitant prices.

The shrimps are around 10 cm in length and live nearly three miles from the shore. Interestingly, depending on the moon they are found nearer the surface (new moon) or at greater depths (full moon).

Shrimps and beer or white wine, of course, but also with a slither of Iberian ham and Canarian safflower in garlic; or shrimp stir-fry with avocado and cheeses from the Islands; deep-sea shrimp ceviche with mango and coriander…

These and other recipes appear in a publication that arose a few years ago from the Marprof project, the name given to research work on deep-sea fisheries carried out by marine biologist and doctor in biological sciences, José Antonio González. Let’s raise a glass!

WHAT DRAKE MISSED OUT ON IN A CORUÑA If English pirate Francis Drake, who led the assault on the city of A Coruña in 1589, ever rose from his grave, he would have his work cut out trying to choose somewhere to eat, shop or just to enjoy in the Old City, which is livelier than ever 433 years after the historic victory by local heroine María Pita.

The Old City does not grow wrinkles.

It gets younger. It does justice to its history: it was here that the heroine of A Coruña, María Pita, put Drake’s pirates to flight in the year 1589. On its cobbled stones stood a Jewish quarter which still retains the names of the trades practised and today you can stroll along calle Herrerías (Blacksmiths Street). Sir John Moore is buried here. The most universal of Galicians, Rosalía de Castro, lived here, as did Emilia Pardo Bazán.

The heartbeat of the university and city life can be felt above and beneath each stone. You would be hard pushed to

find a quarter with so much life, culture and history condensed into such a small area. Cradle of the most important events in A Coruña’s history, the Old City remains a magical place that gets younger with the passing years and is currently enjoying a boom in terms of gastronomy, arts/crafts and diversion.

Examples include Arobe Cerámica (calle San Francisco, 2), where you can learn the art of ceramic-making from artisan Alejandro Roig, who has revolutionised this profession and has waiting lists of over a year for his classes. Right next to it is one of the Old City’s coolest places, Troppo, which you can enjoy Italian aperitifs surrounded by vinyl records.

Of late it is also where you will find two of the driving forces of the Old City: Tatiana Riego and Amanda de Diego, the mother and daughter behind Taller de Amanda, one of the shops with most personality in the city. The two are part of a group of creative minds that have set up in the Old City, where they make handmade bags, candles with Atlantic scents and unique ceramics. Specialists in gift hampers also, they organise workshops on the terrace of their shop in calle Capitán Troncoso. It is not hard to come across them as they deliver their lively late-evening ceramics classes, with a glass of Galician wine included.

You would be hard pushed to find a quarter with so much life, culture and history condensed into such a small area.

It is best just to wander through the cobbled streets, stopping along the way to admire the beauty of the Colegiata church; see how the young generation learns to crochet in El Taller de mi Vida (calle Herrerías, 12); buy a bunch of flowers in A Coruña’s most Parisian flower shop, La Florería (calle Puerta de Aires, 12); buy a newly-published book from the Berbiriana bookshop (calle Santiago, 7) and read it on one of the benches dotted along the cobbled streets; hire a bike in Ok zona eBike (paseo de la Dársena, 15); enjoy made-in- Galicia Scandinavian designs in Oitenta (plaza de Azcárraga, 7), or treat yourself to a massage with a view of the sea in Öa (paseo de la Dársena, 4). Not even María Pita could not have imagined a better future for her Old City.

Very close to Taller de Amanda is one of A Coruña’s most Instagrammable spots (for that absolute-must photo): the colourful houses and view down over the town hall from high up on the steps of Puerta de Aires. However, the spot that steals the hearts of all visitors and even locals too is the lovely Azcárraga square shaded by trees that have stood there for centuries. This is the place to come at weekends if you want a delightful pre-meal drink (popularly known as a ‘vermouth session’ and ingrained in local life). After that, head for lunch in Espiga,
