YOUR BEST ALLY FOR THE COMING SUMMER Summer is here and we can plan the trips and holidays that many of us have been dreaming about all year and that will allow us to visit other places and take a break from our usual day to day routines.

Here at Binter we want to be your ally for these trips, which is why we continue to increase our schedule by adding new routes designed to provide a varied, attractive and different offer which we hope excites you as much as it does us.

We have already outlined elsewhere the new domestic and international flights you can enjoy from July so I will focus on this occasion on our firm commitment to La Palma and to aiding its recovery. The summer schedule we have put in place will see an increase of 20% in flights to the island during the busiest months for tourism and passenger numbers.

Since the end of May, La Palma has benefited from direct flights to Tenerife South and Lanzarote and we will add connections between the island and Fuerteventura from July until September. Moreover, we have also stepped up our Lanzarote routes, in this case with direct flights to and from Tenerife South.

With all our new inter-island, domestic and international routes, Binter will offer more than 3.6 million seats during the summer season and will surpass the figure of 75 million passengers carried since the airline began flying.

All this has been possible thanks to our ongoing fleet renewal, which was not halted during the pandemic and has resulted in us having more ATR and Embraer planes now.

I would like to end this editorial by mentioning an action which is very important to us on account of its humanitarian and social connotations. At the end of April we worked with the Rotary Club in Puerto de la Cruz and the Canaries with Chernobyl Association to fly refugees from Ukraine to the Canary Islands. We sent a plane to Krakow to bring 122 Ukrainians on a flight where we pulled out all the stops to ensure they felt as comfortable and cared for as possible.

Allow me to take advantage of the opportunity here to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the Binter staff involved in that special flight for their dedication and hard work and for getting behind it from the very first minute.

«CULTURE IS VITAL TO THINK ABOUT THE THINGS THAT HAPPEN TO US» Paula Quintana is an artist who has been immersed in the world of dance since she was a child and has earned multiple awards for her artistic work. After completing her degree in drama, she moved to Madrid, where she continued her training as an actress and dancer.

She has worked in audiovisual productions in theatre and dance in Spain and beyond. Her major works include Siempre, en algún lugar (2017) and Latente (2015). In 2019 she began a trilogy with Las alegrías (2019), La carne (2020) and Huerto (2022) and is currently working on the project with a multidisciplinary team comprising artists, professionals and scientific researchers.

As a child I was always dancing, acting …, and they stayed with me as I grew up. I took dancing and drama classes and did as much of these as I could all the time. I soon realised that I would be very unhappy if I did anything else. It has been something organic in me because I have been doing this since I was a small girl.

How did you begin in the world of dance? Did your interest develop from an early age?

Yes, I always say that I didn’t choose it, it chose me. I cannot ever remember myself not dancing or acting. It has always been my way of expressing myself and communicating.

tools or a solid grounding to generate activities or projects. It is not so much a case of greater commitment being needed but rather for all this to be managed properly in the mid- to long term. Leisure is obviously necessary, particularly in the situation we have just experienced, and it is out there. In my opinion, culture is vital to help us think about the things that happen to us, to reflect, to create and invent better models and better times.

That is exactly what culture trains us to do: emotions, relationships with others, imagining other possible worlds. If all this is not planned properly, it will be hard to engage society at large. Things have improved in recent years and some very interesting and wonderful things are being done but at times the majority of people are unaware of these. It’s not that they are not happening; rather, it is simply that people don’t know about them.

How did those around you react?

The usual advice is to have a back-up plan just in case …

It was quite normal for them as I was always acting and dancing. Still, when I said I was thinking of doing it professionally things were difficult for the family. There was lots of uncertainty then…

Maybe they thought I would get over it or I would try my hand at it for a couple of years and then switch to something else … It was tough. Although I grew in confidence as the years passed, I had to fight my way to get here, despite the fears and self-doubt. Very often I would ask myself: «Can I do this as a job?». Another problem was that I didn’t have role models, but all this makes you stronger as you do not have things easy.

You mentioned uncertainty, something culture knows a lot about. How is dance doing at present, in your opinion?

«The body, music, and movement can reach places that words sometimes cannot reach» -

The sector has always been a precarious one and this was further compounded by the pandemic because everyone had to go cap in hand. There was no support available. Not that this is anything new: it had always been like that.

Even now when things are picking up as in other sectors, it is still a precarious sector which is not managed with a clear future perspective in mind.

You have defined culture and what we can gain from it. What is dance for you?

Well… [She reflects and takes her time before responding], it is a form of communication and of transmitting things from a place that is not always very specific or intellectualised. There are times when you are able to understand things without them being explained to you, or you understand them because you know them emotionally and empathise. Moreover, the body, music and movement can reach places that words cannot reach.

It’s very much a day-to-day existence, is it not?

That’s so true. And that makes it very difficult not just for the actual sector but the public in general. In my view, it is very hard for culture to become important for society and really play a key role if there is no desire for this to come about. I get very frustrated that there is a big gap between the population at large and the culture sector. Very often, there are no

SELF-CONTROL: TRAINING AND BENEFITS Self-control is the ability to regulate our impulses at will. Like many other abilities, it can be trained but if you stop training, it decreases and can have various effects on our lives and the lives of others. The key is to have voluntary control of our emotions, feelings and behaviours; in other words, to govern these at will.

We have all no doubt talked about Will Smith’s reaction at the Oscars. Many may even have changed their opinion of the actor. Maybe even his own wife: her face a few minutes later said it all. On the opposite side of the spectrum, everyone admires Rafael Nadal and his self-control at difficult times in games. Who would not like to be like him?

the basal ganglia. One circuit, which he terms GO, is responsible for spurring us into action, while the mirror circuit NO GO, to use his term - prompts us to think. Both are triggered by dopamine.

During childhood, someone (parents, teachers, …) teaches us to train the NO GO circuit, but no one supervises us once we reach adulthood. Worse still, things are made much more difficult for us by today’s reality which emphasis immediate action, immediate reward and immediate enjoyment.

One might think initially that self-control is a genetically inherited trait and, indeed, this is partly true. However, we know for certain that it is something that you can train. Stanford University neuroscientist Andrew Huberman explains how and why.

I particularly liked one of his examples about children: when they have been still and then move (GO), you hear the typical shout «keep still!». Or «Don’t leave the table until everyone has finished eating».

And, of course, «don’t interrupt, child …».

All these are examples of training NO GO.

Paradoxically, today we can’t stop ourselves from checking emails, looking at our phone screen and checking Whatsapp and social media, leaving a task half-finished to begin another one or to have a coffee or do whatever. Even when on Instagram we scroll through in such desperation that we have to go back up in case we have missed something interesting, which of course we have. We have been kidnapped by GO.

incompatible with the muscular tension required for aggressive action; this will lead them to relax their mind also.

I hope nobody sees me behaving like a turtle in the office on a stressful day.

As mentioned earlier, Huberman has his own recipe. He describes how he trains his NO GO circuit through 20 or 30 small-scale inactivity actions every day.

Examples include not looking at his mobile phone, checking email two or three times a day at most, focusing on a task for 90-minute periods without getting up from his chair under any circumstances, putting off coffee or snack breaks, keeping to a plan, thinking before acting, meditating (this is really a NO GO plan!).

These examples of limited self-control do not entail serious consequences, at least in the short term. However, in the medium term you could lose your job due to low productivity.

Paradoxically, today we can’t stop ourselves from checking emails, looking at our phone screen and checking Whatsapp and social media, leaving a task half-finished to begin another one or to have a coffee or do whatever.

A note of caution, however: this does not mean we should neglect the GO circuit. Of course there will be times when we need to act: we even need to train for this when we might be tempted to do nothing (go out for a run, do the most boring task, etc.).

In closing, I do not want to end without referring back to a previous article which mentioned the marshmallow test experiment, which measured our capacity for delayed gratification in anticipation of a bigger reward. Contrary to predictions, the study showed that young people are better at this than their parents. According to the researchers involved, the explanation is as follows: «We believe that the increase in abstract thought, the fact that more children go to nursery schools now, the changes in how children are brought up, and - paradoxically - the cognitive skills associated with screen technologies, could be contributing to generational improvements as regards delayed gratification ».

Other forms of loss of self-control are much more serious and have dire consequences: we have all suffered these or at least seen them. Let’s look at the positive side, however: how can we oil the circuit again? Huberman’s techniques are extremely useful but first let us mention a solution used for youngsters: the Turtle Technique. It is very visual. It involves telling a child who has entered a negative situation that they should imitate a turtle. The first action is to withdraw into an imaginary shell, just like a turtle does when faced with danger. You tell the child to imitate the turtle by curling up into a ball. The second stage is to get them to relax their muscles as this is

CANARIES BEAT FILM-SHOOT RECORD IN 2021 The Canary Islands were the stage in 2021 for 155 productions, including films, series, documentaries, short and animated films, which generated total earnings of 98 million euros for the region.

The figures are the highest recorded in the islands’ history and represent a three-year high. It is worth noting that, even in 2020, when the pandemic brought the world to a standstill, 80 productions were still filmed in the Canaries. This positive trend also helped double the number of technical and artistic professionals hired directly, in addition to the many film extras and suppliers recruited.

Staying with the figures, 2018 brought 79 productions that generated 60 million euros in revenue. In 2019, there were 101, generating 48 million; the figure in 2020 was 80, worth 28 million euros. The best

results were achieved in 2021, which saw 155 productions and over 98 million euros in revenue. Nearly 20 % were animated series and films, a sector which continues to grow.

MARCH OVERNIGHT STAYS IN APARTMENTS UP ALMOST 600 % IN THE CANARIES The Canary Islands topped the table of overnight stays in holiday apartments in the month of March, which recorded an increase of 594.8 % compared to the same month last year.

Provisional figures published by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that there were more than two million overnights stays in the Islands.

According to digital newspaper Canarias Ahora, in Spain as a whole, the number of nights in non-hotel accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels) exceeded 5.9 million in March, almost three times (+186.5 %) the figure recorded in March 2021, when there were two million overnight stays.

BLUE FLAGS SET TO FLY ON 621 SPANISH BEACHES THIS SUMMER A total of 621 Spanish beaches will fly the Blue Flag this summer, six more than last year. For eighteen of these it will be the first time they will display the hallmark flag that recognises the water quality of the beaches as well as the high standard of their facilities and their compliance with safety criteria.

The Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), which is the body behind the initiative, has published the list of 729 Blue Flags that will be flown in 2022 on 621 beaches (seven of them inland) in 250 municipalities; 103 marinas (seven more than last year) and five sustainable tourism boats (three more than last year) the length and breadth of Spain. A total of 691 beaches applied for a Blue Flag this year (fifteen more than in 2021), with 89 % of the applications successful. Together, they account for 43 % of beaches whose waters are deemed to be of excellent quality.

TOURISM SECTOR ANTICIPATES MID- TO LONG-TERM UPTURN

In line with the return to normality seen in recent months, forecasts for the tourism sector are upbeat, with around eight million jobs expected to be created in Europe within the coming decade according to the latest Economic Impact Report (EIR) by the World Tourism and Travel Council (WTTC). Average annual growth for the sector will be 3.3 % in Europe, compared to the 1.5 % estimated for the economy overall during the dec-

ade; meanwhile tourism’s contribution to GDP is expected to increase by 31.4 % to reach 1.73 trillion euros. The WTTC data for 2021 reveal that Europe recorded a 4.7 % increase in the number of sector jobs - accounting for just over 9 % of the global job market - a stark contrast to the fall of 12.5 % recorded last year. The travel and tourism sector is expected to return to pre-pandemic figures by the end of 2023.

DIGIINNOVA GIVES STUDENTS INSIGHT INTO BUSINESS INNOVATION

In May, the Faculty of Fine Arts hosted Digiinnova Day, an event organised to offer fifty university students a glimpse of business innovation. The initiative facilitates direct contact between the students and the heads of innovation departments in the form of group meetings with a maximum of fifteen students per group. The students acquire first-hand knowledge of the real world of business, the profiles sought, mar-

ket demands, and the keys to successful entry to the labour market.

The programme aims to facilitate six such meetings for each group, encouraging direct and small-scale contact that allows the students to ask the companies about their interests and the companies to set out their visions of innovation and their main projects in this area.

EL HIERRO AND LA GOMERA LEAD RURAL TOURISM RECOVERY Figures from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics analysed by the Observatory of hotel association Ashotel reflect a fall of 11.5 % in overnight stays in the province of Tenerife compared to the same period before the pandemic.

Rural tourism accommodation establishments in the western islands ended the first quarter of 2022 with a total of 82 353 overnight stays, 11.5 % less than the figure posted for the same period in 2019.

La Gomera and El Hierro were the only islands to record positive growth in the first quarter compared to the pre-pandemic period.

Of the islands, El Hierro recorded the highest percentage increase, up 45.6 % compared to the first quarter of 2019, with a total of 2937 overnight stays, 920 more than the reference period; for its part, La Gomera posted an increase of 22.9 %.

The Institute’s figures show a rise of 139 % compared to the same period in 2021, when many travel restrictions were still in place.

All three were leading lights in their disciplines, namely, painting, literature and philosophy. They transformed Europe with their ideas and, moreover, were born in the same place: Florence. We invite you to visit the streets that gave rise to the Renaissance and enjoy one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

A trip to the capital of Tuscany is one that you will never forget for as long as you live. Florence has a special and romantic atmosphere, derived from its unquestionable beauty. Its streets were the birthplace of the Renaissance, a period of extraordinary creativity which

spread throughout Europe from the 14th to the 17th centuries. It was a period characterised by renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman culture and which placed man at the centre of everything (humanism), while also redefining ideal beauty.

Many scholars view the Renaissance as a bridge between the classical and modern ages, and this is a characteristic that pervades the entire city. A paramount example of this legacy can be seen in the Piazza de San Giovanni, probably the first port of call for all visitors. Here you will find the cathedral of Santa María dei Fiore, with its campanile and baptistry, the most beautiful and most important architectural ensemble of the Italian Renaissance. The entire Duomo is so impressive that surrounding homes were even demolished to allow the full splendour of the façade to be appreciated. The Brunelleschi dome is not only a jewel of engineering but also the symbol of the city, its 91-metre height causing worldwide wonderment.

One of the most striking elements of the gallery is the Vassari Corridor, the upper one on the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge).

This passageway allowed the Medici family to cross from the Vecchio Palace to the Pitti Palace, their recreational home, without having to mingle with the population. The Ponte Vecchio is the highpoint of the route. Prepare your mind and senses for one of the most stunning sunsets you will ever see. At the end of the day, gazing out at the shimmering light on the River Arno as you listen to the street musicians playing on the bridge, you truly realise that you are visiting one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and, arguably, the world. Here, your camera - which has probably been your great ally until now will have its work cut out to capture this spectacular moment.

Here you will find the cathedral of Santa María dei Fiore, with its campanile and baptistry, the most beautiful and most important architectural ensemble of the Italian Renaissance.

Although we have already revealed the city’s most iconic treasures, they are by no means the only ones. Near Piazza della Signoria, take the street known as Borgo de Greci to the Piazza Santa Croce, where you will find the basilica of the same name.

This is one of Florence’s most special places, protected by the attentive gaze of a giant statue of Dante. The basilica houses the tombs of Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo, among many other figures of genius from the city. It is also the home of the empty tomb of the poet Dante, whose remains have yet to be brought here, and two chapels painted by Giotto.

From the square you can walk along the Via dei Calzaiuoli, a pedestrian street leading to the Piazza della Signoria, the political nerve centre of Florence in medieval days as well as the location of the Palazzo Vecchio, with its impressive Tower of Arnolfo and extensive collection of sculptures that make the square an outdoor museum. These include, for our enjoyment, a copy of Michelangelo’s David, which is situated at the palace entrance, as well as many others such as the bronze sculpture of Perseus holding the head of Medusa. And if that were not sufficient, painting enthusiasts can visit the Uffizi Gallery, the most visited art gallery in Italy, which offers a journey

The city undoubtedly has something that makes it so special and makes many of the people born here so exceptional.

THE CITY WITH MANY UNKNOWNS The mist that cloaks Valladolid on many days of the year also conceals this Castilian city’s modern face, one which the locals would like visitors to get to know. In addition to its cathedral and churches, Miguel Delibes and José Zorrilla, and its tapas, Valladolid boasts quality museums as well as centres where new artists produce and showcase their work. Spanish tourists visit Valladolid to see and enjoy its attractions. Old and new landmark buildings located along both banks of the Pisuerga, the river that is the source of Valladolid’s beach.

The bar is very close to the university square and the Calderón Theatre, one of the venues for the Valladolid International Film Week (known by its Spanish acronym SEMINCI) along with the Carrión, Zorrilla and Cervantes Theatres, the Broadway Cinema and the Fundos Hall. The festival dates back to 1956 and was staged initially during Easter with the aim of transmitting Catholic moral values through the films. However, it failed to attract sufficient quality films to meet this aim and the religious flavour had to be dropped.

The festival switched to its current format under the name SEMINCI, an acronym which, back then, was ideal as it saved the organisers having to include so many words in their telegrams. Short but complete messages which are reflected today in the revered ‘tapas’ snacks served by all local bars with every drink.

For the former, it is best to visit the historic Bar Suizo or the Café El León de Oro on the main square where the town hall and the Zorrilla Theatre are also located. In the second case, you need to go to the Amberes Café, from where you can see one of the few remaining neon signs still working today, at the Bus Stop Restaurant next to the bus station. Close by also is the India House Foundation, a 1915 villa subsequently converted into one of the city’s cultural spaces. The old city abattoir is home today to the Valladolid Arts Laboratory (LAVA), a centre supporting creators and artists with services and activities tailored to their productions, and the La Comercial studio, workshop and visual creation laboratory. These spaces are as attractive as they are needed.

Museums dedicated to important figures of universal history next to the National Museum of Sculpture and Patio Herreriano Art Museum. The first of these occupies three locations: St Gregory’s College, the Villena Palace, and the Casa del Sol / Church of St Benito. The second is located in a cloister of the monastery of St Benito. It houses a collection of 20th century art and is one of the city’s top museums.

The Charco Azul (Blue Pool) is one of El Hierro’s iconic swimming spots and a visit to this natural pool is an absolute must. Over eight metres long and around six metres wide, with stunning colours, it is the perfect location to immerse yourself in nature. The pool is perfectly suitable to visit as it has ladders for access and is protected from the sea.

The Caldera de Taburiente, designated a National Park in 1954, arose from a giant volcanic edifice some 4000 metres high in the very centre of La Palma. After massive landslides, the current Caldera began to take shape and further landslides on a lesser scale and the constant action of erosion helped produce the landscape we see today. Its impressive geological formations include the rock monoliths known as Roques, that have withstood erosion and jut out from the landscape. Some of these rocks were places of worship for the island’s early inhabitants.

Culture La Gomera Archaeological Museum La Gomera’s Archaeological Museum helps visitors get to know the culture of the island’s earliest inhabitants. The information provided in its different exhibition rooms is derived from a series of archaeological investigations as well as the study of texts dating as far back as the days of the Spanish Conquest. The museum illustrates how the first populations arrived on the island, how they lived and used the available resources, and other aspects such as their settlements, social and political organisation, and beliefs. On display are very valuable archaeological objects that further our knowledge of the earliest Gomerans, together with reproductions, site recreations, photographs, and a comprehensive range of information for visitors.

TENERIFE

Historic figure Amaro Pargo Amaro Rodríguez Felipe, popularly known as the privateer Amaro Pargo, was born in 1678 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. He came from a poor family of farmers and herdsmen. Amaro went to sea at an early age and soon rose to the rank of captain thanks to his navigating skills and qualities as a strategist. He is often described as one of the most iconic pirate figures in the Canaries, yet he was really a trader, moneylender, captain and member of the Canarian nobility (receiving his title in 1727). He grew quite rich

thanks to his participation in the Race to the Indies and his various business interests. What was once his home is now a building in ruins that has been looted various times in search of the treasure he is said to have hidden there. Some believe this treasure could be somewhere in the Anaga Rocks while others place it in the Punta del Hidalgo area. This historic figure has always been shrouded in mystery as a result of oral tradition and the stories that have grown up around him.

GRAN CANARIA Activities Surfing

The Canary Islands are among the world’s best surfing locations. Gran Canaria’s beaches are very varied and are ideal for those who want to ride on a surfboard for the first time as well as for experienced surfers. One of the oldest documented games in the islands, Canarian boules is similar in some respects to France’s petanque.

The tradition is strongest in Lanzarote, which is considered to be where the sport originated and from where it spread to the rest of the Canaries. Today it is practised on all the islands, the main difference between them being the type of material used for the ball. In Lanzarote it is made of wood and this makes the game more difficult.

LA GRACIOSA

Flora La Graciosa broomrape (‘tarabaste’) The La Graciosa broomrape is endemic to the Canaries and is found on Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and, needless to say, on the island from which it takes its name: La Graciosa. It is a parasitic plant that needs a host to survive. It can be widely dispersed and difficult to come across. Erect and narrow, it grows to heights of between 20 and 30 cm.

A paradise that impresses walkers with a thousand and one spots to discover at leisure and enjoy its forests, mountains, ravines and volcanoes inch by inch thanks to its extensive network of well-maintained trails.

Notes: the walk takes between seven and eight hours and is of medium difficulty, but is well and truly worth it.

Did you know? The Waterfall of Colours was created in the 1960s when it was considered necessary to retain water from the Caldera de Taburiente.

This time the ‘Beautiful Island’ (as La Palma is popularly known) shares with us its most iconic jewel: the Caldera de Taburiente volcanic crater. Huge landslides, volcanic eruptions, and the erosive force of water during millions of years have produced a colossal cirque that is more than eight kilometres in diameter and, at some points, almost two thousand metres deep. This gigantic open wound on the island’s young skin boasts a rich botanical, geological and archaeological heritage. The wonderful Canarian pine forest here is one of the most impressive in the Canaries and coexists in Taburiente alongside gigantic precipices, the placid babbling of streams, the cawing of crows and the legacy of La Palma’s indigenous past. All this is more than sufficient reason to justify the granting of the highest level of environmental protection for this jewel, which has enjoyed National Park status since 6 October 1954.

Less than a kilometre from the point where the streams join, we arrive at a spectacular and breathtaking spot: The Waterfall of Colours.

To get to the Caldera you have to venture into the Las Angustias ravine, a winding giant furrow that snakes its way along the foot of spectacular walls. Our

walk begins in the car park at La Viña and we follow the signs for the PR-LP 13 trail which we take for approximately six kilometres, walking gently up through the ravine as we listen to the sound of the water and become ever-more tiny as the colossal rockfaces surrounding the Caldera become increasingly bigger. The scenery is stunning, worthy of more distant shores and prehistoric times. We walk along the ravine bottom, which is full of stones carried, smoothed and deposited by the force of the water down the ages. After passing Dos Aguas (Two Waters), where the Almendro Amargo and Taburiente streams merge, we leave the PR-LP 13 and follow the course of the former. Less than a kilometre from the point where the streams join, we arrive at a spectacular and absolutely breathtaking spot. The Waterfall of Colours combines greenery, ochre and orange, and derives its colours from the dissolved iron present in the waters that flow down to the Rivanceras ravine from the springs high up in the peaks. The sound of the water plunging over the waterfall, the magnificent grey walls stretching skywards, the pine trees clinging to the rocks like tightrope walkers, and the customary blue of the sky on this side of the island combine to produce a magnificent setting which will captivate you with its comforting scents of nature. After spending some time contemplating this exceptional gift from mother nature, we head back to the starting point of the walk along the same route.

A FULLY DESERVED NAME Yes, it is an artificial beach with a wide range of shops and restaurants on its doorstep. It is a long way from the idyllic, volcanic, rugged and secluded coves found in many parts of the Canary Islands. And yet Playa Amadores (Lovers’ Beach) has something special about it. An alluring aura. The reasons could be its near-perfect semicircular shape, its bright and contrasting colours beneath one of the Canaries’ most ever-present suns, its virtually unrivalled climate and still waters, or the attraction of being one of the Atlantic island locations with most whales and dolphins … Whatever the reason, anyone who drives along the road that runs past the beach and takes in the spectacular sight will be very tempted to slow down, stop and head down there. Try for yourself: all you need to do is go to the southern Gran Canaria town of Mogán, between two well-known harbours.

There are times when, beyond the actual explanations behind them, names and their many reinterpretations in the constant reknitting of language prevalent today prove as perfect as they are impossible to improve upon. For all the meanings we might give them, it seems they could not be more fitting to designate what they are supposed to refer to, subjectively needless to say. Despite its artificial nature, Playa Amadores (Lovers’ Beach) could not have a more appropriate name.

Never mind how the beach came about: anyone driving along the road that passes it falls in love with it and cannot help braking, stopping and heading down to enjoy it. In fact, that is what it is there for: to be loved.

Try it and you will see.

Situated between the famous harbour at Mogán, the south Gran Canaria town boasting year-round sun and one of Europe’s best climates, and Puerto Rico, one of the many select resorts in the area, Amadores leaves no one indifferent. It is impossible to do so. Perhaps it is due to its precise shape, the almost perfect semicircle of 800 metres of sheltered sandy beach, with its near-still waters and bright and contrasting colours, the yellow of the sand and blue of the sky and sea, which are reinforced by the many umbrellas combining these two typical Gran Canaria colours, and the sunbeds that contribute even more yellow.

Getting to the beach is easy from Mogán harbour, the Canaries’ closest equivalent to Venice, and also from Maspalomas, Arguineguín or Puerto Rico, skirting by many other family-friendly and beautiful beaches.

The signage and the road along the coast are very straightforward. Travelling from either direction, as you come round the various bends you will be captivated by the spectacular nature of Amadores. It is unmistakeable and enamouring, its shape welcoming you with open arms. Despite the impression given, parking is relatively easy although at peak times on busy days a gem of this nature is understandably very popular.

The wide promenade provides easy access to other parts of the cove, the sights of which can be enjoyed from almost anywhere.

Primarily geared to tourism, Playa Amadores boasts a full range of excellent services. These are set out clearly on the many signs, which also list the activities that are prohibited in this family-friendly and holidaymaker-oriented cove. For all these reasons, since 2004 it has held the EU’s prestigious blue flag, a reflection of its well-maintained nature and the consideration shown

For those who prefer to have everything in one place, just across the sand and wide promenade are numerous shops, bars and restaurants of all varieties so that your day at the beach lacks nothing. What’s more, the very calm sea is ideal for young and old, as well as for good and less accomplished swimmers, to cool down, play or show off their skills. You can also head in search of cooler temperatures and a little more peace and quiet on one of the two small jetties which have a gap between them that leads out to the open sea. On the right-hand side of the beach are the children’s play areas, with a playground, slides and other equipment.

Despite its artificial nature, Playa Amadores could not have a more appropriate name If well looked after and calm family beaches offering permanent sunshine and a wide range or amenities are what you are after, look no further than Playa Amadores in Gran Canaria. It doesn’t matter that it is an artificial beach; it doesn’t matter where its name comes from: it will simply enamour you. You will want to be its lover. Don’t believe it? Go there and you will definitely stop to visit.

What more can be said? The sand and the swimming zones are evenly distributed 52

Moreover, the basement of this former Governor’s House (where Columbus was formally received) has an extensive collection of pre-Columbian cultural items.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is also the birthplace of the incomparable author Pérez Galdós, whose Museum-House is located in the Triana quarter, and of Juan Negrín, whose Foundation can be visited in the Vegueta district.

Both authors would no doubt enjoy themselves in the Elder Museum of Science and Technology (in Santa Catalina Park), where it is prohibited not to touch the objects on display. Meanwhile, in the Port-Canteras district, the La Regenta Art Centre and the Martín Chirino Art and Thought Foundation, the latter based in La Luz Castle, are two further options to enjoy history and art.

Close by in the city’s historic quarter is the Canarian Museum, which showcases the culture of Gran Canaria’s earliest inhabitants, including their customs, way of life, and funereal rites. Visitors are amazed by its stunning selection of mummies and remains. The history of the city is narrated also in the Museum of Sacred Art and the cathedral, both located in the iconic Plaza de Santa Ana. For its part, the Town Hall Building is not only the historic home of the council but also boasts an impressive art collection, including works

Knowing the benefits afforded by exercise helps increase our awareness of its importance for keeping us active.

Physical exercise and sport are a field of knowledge that has evolved greatly in recent decades: their importance has become much more visible, as has their impact on people’s health, so much so that they are considered one of the four essential pillars of physical and mental wellbeing.

Expert advice is important to guide us so we can choose the best exercises for our process. Fortunately, the pandemic has led to an increase in online resources, which has helped all those women who have difficulty accessing exercise activities in their area for geographical or personal reasons.

Exercise by mothers has a direct effect on the foetus and - later - the baby, as it helps it reach an ideal weight, avoid hypoglycemia problems and achieve a better Apgar score at birth. Exercise by mothers has also been found to improve the functioning of the placenta, leading to better placental vascularisation and oxygenation and increasing the exchange of amino acids with the foetus.

The range of options currently on offer include apps with routines, personalised advice, virtual classes, and even individual classes. Remember that you should consult your gynaecologist before beginning in case there are any contraindications that need to be considered.

We realise that many situations arise during pregnancy and a woman’s body can become more tired, fatigued and may even lose its appetite for exercise.

However, to motivate us and instil the exercise habit, let us not forget all the benefits exercise brings.

If all these benefits were not enough, there is a further crucial aspect influenced by exercise: the birth itself. This is a unique and delicate moment and women who are regular exercisers have been shown to present a lower rate of Caesarean sections and instrumental deliveries, not to mention shorter labour.

Physical exercise is not just necessary during pregnancy: it also has a direct and positive effect on the mother.

As various midwives and gynaecologists point out on their social media, women are built for childbirth. The problem is that new and increasingly sedentary lifestyles lead to a loss of mobility, elasticity and strength, to the extent that some women cannot cope with the ageold squatting birth position. The experience of the aforementioned professionals leads them to underline the need to restore the body’s ability and energy to optimise this natural process.

Helpful strategies exist, including choosing activities we find pleasurable, finding people to do the exercises with, identifying a personal motivation... Any excuse is a good one to give our bodies mobility, strength and stretching capacity.

In that regard, we should bear in mind that not all women can or should practise sport in the same way and with the same intensity. This will depend, rather, on factors such as their health, the progress of their pregnancy, and whether they practised a sport or exercised before becoming pregnant.

We hope that the small suggestions outlined above will help you look after your own health and that of your babyto-be and seek out the best available resources to remain healthy during this very special time of your life.

With spinal fractures or back conditions such as vertebral displacement, screws need to be inserted. A minimally invasive procedure allows these screws to be placed using smaller incisions and less damage is therefore caused to patient musculature. This leads to a speedier recovery, less pain and fewer complications and risks.

MORE THAN 14,700 HEEL PRICK TESTS FOR CONGENITAL DISEASES CARRIED OUT IN MURCIA LAST YEAR In 2021, the Murcia Health Service’s Biochemistry and Clinical Genetics Centre, which is located in the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital, conducted 14,775 studies under its Neonatal Screening Programme, popularly known as the heel prick test.

A further 10,357 requests from 8694 patients were dealt with, an activity increase of 15.4 % compared to 2020.

The purpose of the centre is to detect, diagnose and prevent genetic disorders and to carry out research in the fields of cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, molecular genetics and genomics, including hereditary cancer.

The centre’s challenges for the current year include optimising the quality indicators of its Neonatal Screening Programme, the detection of congenital suprarrenal hyperplasia, and the

creation of a Genomics and Hereditary Cancer Unit, all of which are envisaged under its Rare Illnesses Plan.

Lille First week in September This giant flea market is held every year during the first week in September and is preceded on the Saturday morning by a half marathon. It starts officially at 2pm and continues non-stop until Sunday at 11pm. During the 33 hours of the celebration, the city of Lille is transformed into a gigantic pedestrian zone where visitors, traders, antique dealers and bargain-hunters perpetuate a commercial and festive tradition. The exhibition is aimed at all publics and is very user-friendly, featuring interactive zones that allow visitors to find out how much they would weigh on Mars and how their voice would sound there. It also offers holograms of depictions of Martians in science fiction.

Palazzo Grimani Until November 2022 The collection of classical sculptures comes back to the Grimani Palace four centuries later in an exhibition that has been extended until the end of November 2022. The Palazzo Grimani Museum in Santa Maria Formosa thus ratifies its prominent place role in Venice’s cultural scene with new projects that strengthen dialogue between antiquity and the modern world in a unique setting in the city’s architectural and historic-artistic landscape. Its main areas include the Sala del Doge –one of the palace’s most spectacular and evocative settings, which recovers its Renaissance splendour– and the Archinto exhibition, featuring new works

by German artist Georg Baselitz.

Some of these have been made expressly for the Palazzo and will remain on loan to the museum thanks to a special agreement with the artist.

AN ARRAY OF ATLANTIC FISH WITH UNMISTAKEABLE MOJO DRESSING Do we really appreciate the fish from our own shores in the Canary Islands? Do the lesser-known fish, distinctive shellfish and quality crustaceans caught in our waters receive the place they deserve on the podium of local produce? Let’s find out about our varieties of Atlantic marine species, which should not be forgotten as part of a gastronomic experience and have a great ally in our delicious ‘mojo’ sauces.

Not that long ago, our grandparents or parents would arrive home and shout: «Let’s eat out!». The initial joyful reaction was followed immediately by the inevitable question: “meat or fish”?

The children would always opt for meat of some kind with chips, while the adults would choose seasonal fish, most likely grilled parrot fish, wisely chargrilled comber fish or a hearty grouper or pollack stew accompanied by escaldón, roasted maize meal mixed with fish juice.

in the age-old traditional way, preferably using mortar and pestle, is the best way to bring out the nuances and flavours of our rich palette of sea fish.

It is clear that the food scene in the Canaries has slowly changed in terms of customs and ideas although there has been no change whatsoever in the quality of the shiny ingredients sourced from our clean Atlantic waters, an amazing but at times under-appreciated marine food pantry on our doorstep. We are not just referring to what it means for restaurants but its importance for households too.

A search of various sources, including traditional ones, throws up mojos made with pumpkin, fennel, pine nuts and even sweet potato! Not forgetting parsley, basil, or carrot, which gives it such a rich colour. Have you heard of ‘mojo roto’?

Made with Canarian safflower and local oranges? What about mojo made from guava fruit or with garden mint? Coffee mojo anyone?

Certain species of fish spring to mind all too easily: mackerel, blue jack mackerel, forkbeard, white sea bream, tuna… However, the marine culture of the Canaries includes –or at least it did in bygone times– varieties that are rarely considered today or are rejected commercially, despite their many and key nutritive properties.

The shiny source ingredients come from the clean Atlantic waters, an amazing but at times under-appreciated food pantry -

Speaking to the main auditorium of the recent 2022 Madrid Fusion International Gastronomy Conference, La Gomera chef Braulio Simancas set out the lengthy list of reasons and factors that influence the fisheries sector and the consumption of fresh fish. One of these is artisanal and wholly sustainable fishing. This has prompted chefs from all the Canary Islands to team up to use our fish to create a gastronomic philosophy that offers not just a taste experience but health benefits also.

In the conference address mentioned earlier, Simancas toyed in culinary fashion with some exceptional jewels from the ocean, interweaving tastes and contrasts from traditional dishes and more modern tendencies. Canarian cuisine aims nowadays not just to rekindle appetites for fresh fish but to showcase both the rich variety of fish we are privileged to enjoy here and the contribution it makes to our food. As chef Juan Carlos Clemente reminds us by way of example, of the dozen or so varieties of tuna that exists today, six are present in our waters and are fished year-round.

Various possibilities and uses come to mind: crispy moray eel, Canarian prawn, sea snails in aged vinegar, grilled limpets with coriander mojo sauce, blue jack mackerel with sweet potato, parrot fish, comber, horse mackerel, wahoo, deepwater alphonsin … Having mentioned parrot fish, mojo and coriander, what better than mojo sauce to go with one of the mainstays of Canarian cuisine such as this fish, which is criticised by some as being tasteless? In short, we must keep up our seafood excellence in the Canaries. Hopefully, examining a pearly razorfish’s eyes will not be the only way to gauge the freshness of the wealth of daily catches on our fish counters.

MAJORCA PROMOTES LOCAL WINES ABROAD The authorities in Majorca took part in Germany’s ProWein Fair for the first time in a bid to promote the island’s wines.

The stand organised by the Chamber of Commerce was made available to five local wine cellars drawn by lots from cellars belonging to the ‘Pla y Llevant’ and ‘Binissalem’ Designations of Origin (DO) and the ‘Vino de Mallorca’ Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), who expressed interest in the Fair. The island’s governing Council said in a press release that the

participating cellars were Vino Rey, Son Prim, José Luis Ferrer, Miquel Oliver and Castell Miquel. Together, the various quality labels from the Balearic Islands sold 47 754 hectolitres of wine in 2021, of which almost 9000 were exported. Most of these exports went to Germany although other countries that buy wine from the islands include Switzerland, Cyprus and Denmark.

MURCIA EXPORTS MORE THAN HALF ITS PEPPER PRODUCTION

The Region of Murcia exported 54 % of the 181 631 tonnes of peppers it grew last year, 14.5 % of Spain’s overall pepper exports to other countries. The figures were given by the regional minister for Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies, Antonio Luengo, during the presentation of the Gastronomy Days which were held in

San Javier to highlight the work of farmers and producer firms.

Murcia peppers occupy fourth position in the region’s exports table, although third place in terms of overall value, at 172 480 000 euros. The main export markets are Germany (34.4 %), France (13.7 %) and Italy (13.7 %).

SAN SEBASTIÁN PROMOTES COFFEE RECYCLING INITIATIVE

Public participation will be one of the keys to the kafEKOak initiative launched by the authorities in San Sebastián. The aim of the campaign is to create a circular economy process which will see all waste associated with coffee drinking (dregs, pods, pouches, bags, etc) sent to a recycling facility instead of to the rubbish bin. The city council hopes to do this by enlisting the participation of the public

and appealing to people’s environmental awareness. All the waste collected will be treated at the facility operated by the KAFEAeco company in the town of Aduna in Guipúzcoa. There, organic waste and the plastic and aluminium from the pods will be processed to create new products and recycled elements such as recycling bins, tables, urban furniture … and even home kits to grow mushrooms.

VALLADOLID HOPING TO EXPORT WINES TO TAIWAN

Taiwan’s Ambassador and head of its Economic and Cultural Office in Spain has given a reminder that Spain occupies sixth place on the list of countries from which Taiwan imports wine. In that regard, the province of Valladolid is seeking to increase its wine presence in Taiwan and to use its architectural and cultural heritage, gastronomy and nature to attract more visitors from the island.

It is not the only thing they share: common to both also are their warm climate, the open character of their people, and tourism.

Given their similarities, the Cadiz authorities and Binter joined forces to organise an event in the Canaries which focused on the Andalusian province and aimed to promote travel between the two regions, taking advantage of the airline’s four weekly flights.

The aim of the programme was to twin the two regions and establish professional and commercial ties with Canarian travel agents. Canarian food accompanied by wines from the Marco de Jerez area and performances by local Carnival murga groups, who were joined by their Chirigota del Canijo counterparts, provided a more relaxed complement to the workshops for the tourism professionals and meetings between business sector representatives.

The Cadiz authorities were accompanied by a delegation of forty tourism sector professionals, representatives of the main town halls, institutions and bodies, and members of the Chirigota del Canijo group, an ever-present in the Cadiz Carnival. All took part in a comprehensive programme of activities in both Tenerife in collaboration with the island’s governing Cabildo - and Gran Canaria.

SMILES FOR LA PALMA Groups of children from La Palma have been enjoying the chance to spend a weekend in Tenerife thanks to an initiative by the Solidarity with La Palma Association in collaboration with airline Binter.

The children aged between 8 and 12 are from the towns worst hit by the volcano eruption: Tazacorte, Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso.

The initiative, called Smiles for La Palma, aims to offer the youngsters the opportunity to switch off for a few days from the harsh reality they have had to endure.

It is designed also to allow them to share an unforgettable adventure that provides

fun days and personal development, helping them overcome the effects that are still present in their home environment.

SPECIAL FLIGHT BRINGS 122 UKRAINIAN REFUGEES TO THE CANARIES A total of 122 Ukrainian refugees, the majority of them women and children, arrived in the Canaries from Poland in an unprecedented cooperation operation in the Islands organised by two humanitarian associations and airline Binter, who laid on the flight.

The initiative was the idea of the Rotary Club in Puerto de la Cruz in collaboration with the Canaries with Chernobyl association, whose leaders travelled ahead to the southern Polish city of Krakow to put in place the logistics, an operation not without risk even with the cooperation provided by Polish and Ukrainian institutions.

A gourmet snack was served up also. The entire crew played a full part in ensuring the success of this solidarity mission.

The refugees were met in the Canaries by their host families, who waited anxiously at the airports in Tenerife and Gran Canaria to welcome the group and start to help them rebuild their lives.
