OUR BIGGEST EVER SCHEDULE OF FLIGHTS OUTSIDE THE CANARIES Spring fever is here and this year Binter is noticing its effects. We feel the anticipation and joy of putting together a summer schedule packed with important new features and evidencing our ongoing commitment, not without its risks, to increasing the connectivity of the Canary Islands in a challenging economic scenario. We hope you will like it as much as we do.

The summer months will see us operate the biggest ever schedule of flights outside the Canaries in our history, with up to 200 flights every week to 31 destinations beyond our islands and a total of one million seats for 2022. All this while at the same time continuing to operate our full range of inter-island flights serving all the islands and even the possibility of travel to La Graciosa thanks to our agreements with road transport and ferry operators.

From July we will commence flights to five new destinations, all very different yet all very attractive: Menorca and Valladolid in Spain; Florence in Italy; Fez in Morocco; and Ponta Delgada in the Azores. We will also resume routes such as Banjul and Sal. Moreover, we have been flying since April to the city of Guelmim in south-west Morocco.

Another key feature is the launch of new direct flights to Madeira from Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife South, not to mention the increased flights from Gran Canaria and those from Tenerife North. In addition, a brand-new route will be launched between Marrakesh and Madeira thanks to our collaboration with Morocco’s National Tourist Office.

We have also decided to create a hub which will see the Canaries connect Dakar and several Spanish airports –Murcia, Majorca, Pamplona and Zaragoza– as well as several outside Spain: Toulouse, Lille and Turin.

That’s not all. This summer will also see us add further connections to various domestic and international destinations, including Jerez de la Frontera, where we will resume flights from Gran Canaria; Pamplona, with one extra flight weekly; and Marrakesh and Agadir, each with an additional weekly flight also.

I hope to see you soon on one of your flights. Given the impressive range of routes available to customers and our extensive in-flight facilities and comfort, the only hard part will be deciding where to fly.

«BEING ON ‘EN OTRA CLAVE’ IS EXCITING, WONDERFUL AND INCREDIBLE. I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT» Gran Canaria-born Yeray Betancor is a Canarian presenter and actor.

His interest in acting and drama generally began when he was young although he did not enter either initially as a job. He worked for a time as cabin crew for an airline, well away from theatres and cameras, until a life-changing incident left him with a spinal injury that saw him confined to a wheelchair. After battling to overcome many adversities, he decided to undergo training and then work in what he had always really wanted to do. Today, he is a member of the cast of the popular Canarian TV comedy show, En otra clave. and things along those lines. As I said, I was a normal boy, I was very into sport and very happy; I left home at eighteen and held down a job while studying. I was keen to travel and get to know new places and new cultures.

Before talking about the key moment that changed your life, could I ask you to introduce yourself to our readers? Tell us about yourself.

I am from the Escaleritas district of Las Palmas. I lived a normal life, part of a normal and very ordinary family. My childhood was a very happy one. Just like any other boy from any other part of Las Palmas. When I was younger, I had a keen interest in culture, particularly theatre, but I never managed to take it further. I was always saying that I would like to enrol on an acting course or something similar but people would say: «Why would you want to do that?»

You were always interested in acting. Other arts too?

No, I was only really interested in putting myself in the shoes of others. I went to the Buenavista I school in Escaleritas and remember walking past the drama class, which was run by students, and thinking as I looked on: «I’d love to be in there». However, I was worried

ing … I don’t know how to put it. When I hit my head, it felt as if an electric shock was running through my whole body, from head to toe. After floating back to the top, I ended up swimming like a dog does because my body was paralysed.

My spinal injury is quite high up, near my chest. My first thought was: «Yeray, you have just screwed your life up. This is the moment your life has just changed». I will never forget that exact moment.

about what people might say or what my friends would think, so I never did anything about it.

When did you decide to do something about it? It was after your accident, was it not?

Yes, it was only in the last five years.

As you get older and reach a certain age, you get the urge to do things you always wanted to do but never did. As an adult, it was not so much that I would seek advice from close friends on whether I should, or should not, do something - in my case, theatre. It was more a case of me simply saying that I was thinking of enrolling on an acting course and the reaction would be «What? Now? Are you hoping to be Brad Pitt?». But there comes a point when you think to yourself, if that’s what I want, I’m going to do it. That’s what happened in my case.

«It is what it is and, after a long time, all you can do is accept things and make the best of the situation» I suppose the hardest part came afterwards: accepting it day to day.

Of course, you don’t accept it at the beginning. You don’t want to, no matter how much they tell you to. You cling to even the tiniest possibility. For ages I was asking myself «why me?». By that I mean there are bad people out there, people who kill and rape, but I was not one of them. I’m not saying that someone else deserved what happened to me, but you can’t avoid wondering why you? I was obsessed with that question for a long time. Until there comes a point when you realise that you can’t continually beat yourself up like that. Life has these things. Good and bad happens to you. It is what it is and, after a long time, all you can try and do is accept things and make the best of the situation. If you want to carry on with your life, you have to move on no matter how hard it is. In the end, the questions go away. You have to accept it, in your own way, with the support of friends and family. It is thanks to them that I have been able to carry on.

What has it been like working with your En otra clave colleagues?

I can say with absolute certainty that being on ‘En otra clave’ is exciting, wonderful and incredible. I don’t have enough words to describe it. It is just amazing. I had zero experience of acting when I joined the show. Being surrounded by such a brilliant team of Canarian actors who have been doing the programme for years has been fantastic.

How did you adapt to your new everyday situation after the accident that caused your spinal injury?

I had a great life. I was a young and sporty guy, aged 27 or 28, travelling and getting to know half the world. I had quite a lot of money for my age. I felt my life was more or less sorted. Then I dived into a hotel swimming pool and hit my head on the bottom. It was a very strange feel-

A GOOD EDUCATION We are still at the bottom of the league tables for education quality. Far from being a national policy to improve results, the various education reforms enacted merely serve to undo the changes implemented by previous governments. Meanwhile our children’s ability to compete seems doomed to decline, unless their parents help them out.

Since the restoration of democracy in Spain, we have been constantly changing the education system yet, paradoxically, not allowing it to change.

Five education laws in 32 years, each with a different name and egotistical and short-sighted sponsor. Things have been done badly, very badly.

Objective reports such as PISA tell us that we have made no progress whatsoever for at least the last 20 years (the time during which PISA has been produced). We rank below Lithuania and below the OECD average. We are doing badly and will do even worse if we do not rectify.

own individual views and the solution will be arrived at among all of us. However, as a private citizen I believe it lies in improving the efficiency of all public administrations and their financial and human resources.

I don’t know about you, but I think that it is important to measure, although with a measuring tape rather than steps. Not measuring students objectively is like not being objective in a public tender procedure: it facilitates prevarication, mediocrity, cronyism, etc, etc.

The political price, the cost in terms of votes. This is the most difficult aspect to manage. Cast your minds back and you will see that major overhauls with far-reaching social consequences have occurred only in extreme circumstances.

The steel industry, shipbuilding, farming …; powerful protests that erode the politician in office tremendously.

You might think I am being overly simplistic and you may be right. I believe that you will achieve better results only if you copy the best. Yet we don’t copy and I have no idea why. Maybe it is because our bright politicians want to shine in their own right and not be accused of copying, like at school.

Continuous improvement comes from wanting, believing and being able to. People need to be motivated to do things well and discouraged them from doing them badly.

Why don’t we copy the successes of the best in the class? Estonia, Japan, Finland, South Korea, Canada… I would encourage you to read this article on Estonia’s surprising education system: «Así se ha convertido Estonia en la nueva Finlandia» (How Estonia has become the new Finland), which appeared in XL Semanal.

Copy the common aspects of the top performers: valued teachers, spending per student, results-geared approaches, measurement.

However, reform in education will not achieve the required pace because the erosion is gradual, silent and slow. If our children are going to be less competitive than those of our neighbours, you can place bets on who will go up in the ratings and who will go down.

It is not easy. To have good teachers you need to improve training, challenge them permanently, ensure proper salaries … For this to come about, resistance to change must be overcome, but that is not enough. Reform of civil service regulations is as necessary as it is impossible. Continuous improvement comes from wanting, believing and being able to. People need to be motivated to do things well and discouraged them from doing them badly. Regrettably, there is no carrot or stick in the public sector. Hence, all this is impossible.

The loss of individual ability to compete brings disastrous consequences: firstly, for the person, then for the firm they work for, the sector, the country.

Ultimately, a negative impact on all of us.

If you have children who are beginning their education, you should consider devoting some time and money to improving their ability to compete. It will be your greatest legacy to them, as well as a great investment on your part to ensure your pension.

Moreover, the required financial resources will inevitably entail cuts in budgets elsewhere. Everyone will have their

CANARIAN FIRMS VIEW AFRICA AS AN INVESTMENT MARKET

A study by Real Instituto Elcano researcher Ainhoa Marín, who presented her latest work in a video conference, indicates that 38.5 % of Canarian firms have a low to medium export risk perception in terms of investing and doing business in Africa. According to Marín, the Canaries’ main export markets in Africa are on the west coast, with Sene-

gal, Mauritania and Cape Verde the most important countries. The researcher recalled that exports to Africa from the Canaries are important in relative terms given that they account for 10 % of the islands’ total exports. Even if the actual percentage is small, it indicates that the Canaries are one of Spain’s leading regions in terms of exporting to Africa.

A CORUÑA PORT AUTHORITY PROMOTES CREATION OF INDUSTRIAL CENTRE FOR OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY COMPONENTS The chairman of the A Coruña Port Authority, Martín Fernández Prado, took part in last month’s Wind Europe 2022 conference, a world shop window to showcase the technological potential of renewable energies.

The sector is of strategic interest for the port of A Coruña, which – thanks to its Green Port project and the capacity of its outer harbour – is ideally placed to attract business and, at the same time, move forward on decarbonising industry.

The proposal was considered a major opportunity bearing in mind that both France and Scotland are building offshore wind farms and the Port Authority has held initial contacts with companies who might be interested in using the port to manufacture components and export these by sea. Chairman Prado also stressed that Europe needs ports for in-

dustrial centres of this type and A Coruña offers ideal conditions given its water depth and the extensive land available.

MURCIA BUSINESSES LOOK TO INTERNATIONAL MARKETS The region of Murcia boasts a solid presence on international markets thanks to the quality, innovation and value added of its products and services, attributes which have helped the region’s firms enjoy success abroad.

Exports in 2021 totalled 12.152 billion euros - an increase of 22 % compared to the previous year - and indicate that Murcia’s export dynamism is higher than the national average (21 %), according to data from Spain’s Institute for Economic Development. The figures can be attributed to the 6,747 Murcia businesses that sold

products abroad, the highest number of exporters since records began.

According to digital newspaper La Verdad, with 3.84 % of Spain’s overall exports, Murcia is the country’s fifth top exporting province, behind only Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Zaragoza.

MUST-SEES ON A 1-DAY VISIT San Sebastián is one of those cities that forever remains in your memory. It is probably one of the most beautiful in the whole of Spain.

Its undulating coastline, varied architecture and not-to-be-missed food make it a favourite with anyone who visits the Basque Country. A major added advantage is that its size allows its must-see attractions to be visited on foot in a single day.

San Sebastián –Donostia in the Basque language– is the capital of the province of Guipúzcoa and the only of the three Basque Country capitals to directly overlook the sea. Its coast, mountains and different districts are home to gems and spots that make it special and attractive

to visitors. It has history and is glamorous; it is a hive of activity in summer and quiet in winter. It is an amazing location for food and a shop window for architecture. Outlined below is a step-by-step tour which begins at Mount Igueldo and ends, for obvious reasons, in the Old Town.

Domestic destination. San Sebastián

Mount Igueldo San Sebastián has three main mountains: Igueldo, Urgull and Ulia. We begin at the first one, which stands at the lefthand tip of La Concha Bay. You can travel up by car, bus or using the cable car that has run here since 1912. The top of the mountain offers probably the best views of the city.

La Concha Bay We head down and towards Peine del viento, the steel sculpture by Eduardo Chillida. If the sea is rough, visitors will enjoy an amusing surprise. From here we walk along the coast towards Mt Urgull, taking in Ondarreta beach, the island of Santa Clara and the Ondarreta gardens on the way.

At the end of the beach, we come to an English-style building: the Miramar Palace. It is worth walking up here to admire the views and its immaculate gardens.

For those with more time on their hands, it is a good idea to head into the Barrio Antiguo district also.

We return to the coast and continue our walk along La Concha beach, arguably the most famous, most visited and most illustrious in Donostia. It takes its character not just from the sea and sand but also its various buildings such as La Perla, the Hotel Londres and the City Hall situated at the far end.

Mount Urgull and Mount Gros We continue our walk, leaving the city hall on our right, and head for the small and picturesque port. Ahead of us lies Mount Urgull, at the top of which stands the statue of the Sacred Heart. Although it is possible to go up the mountain, on this occasion we will skirt it along the bottom

on a leisurely stroll which allows us to admire the immensity of the ocean. We then come to the Zurriola Bridge which takes us across to the Kursaal, the conference centre and auditorium designed by Rafael Moeno and whose architectural style marks a break with the romantic buildings passed earlier. Now is a good time to leave the coast briefly and head into Gros, the city’s youngest and now fashionable district, where we can get something to eat.

La Zurriola beach and María Cristina bridge We head back towards the sea after our well-deserved break and walk alongside the Zurriola beach (home to surfers) to the far end, where we will see the Dove of Peace, a sculpture by Néstor Basterretxea. Next, we retrace our steps to the Zurriola Bridge again, but this time without crossing it. As we walk inland, on the opposite bank we can see the majestic María Cristina Hotel –named after the Queen of the same name, who was a key figure in San Sebastián’s history– and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. We pass the Santa Catalina Bridge also and walk towards the most impressive bridge of all: the María Cristina, which was opened in 1905.

After crossing the bridge, we venture into the city centre to take in its lively streets and visit, among others, the cathedral of the Buen Pastor (Good Shepherd) and St Martin’s Market. As evening falls, we reach the Old Part where the striking features include Constitution Square, the Boulevard and St Mary’s Church. It is now dinner time so what better way to bring our visit to an end than by trying the typical pintxos in Borda Berri, a txuleta steak in Bar Néstor and some cheesecake in La Viña?

Domestic destination. A Coruña. Muros Noia Estuary.

A STONE REFUGE AND SEAFOOD PANTRY The Muros Noia ría is the wisest of all those found in Galicia. Its name pleases the two main towns along this long estuary which penetrates deep inland. Muros and Noia are two coastal towns in the province of A Coruña, the former on the northern shore and the latter on the southern one. Muros lies at the mouth of the estuary, while Noia is located at its narrowest part. The Muros Noia estuary is a geotourism destination featuring stone hamlets, hillfort settlements, industrial heritage, beaches, walking routes and seafood.

The best way to visit the Muros Noia estuary is on a glider. The best views of this ría baixa (lower estuary), which is situated in A Coruña and boasts a twopart name, are those from Laxe das Rodas or the top of Mount Louro. These natural balconies let you appreciate the narrow estuary fed by the waters of the Tines and Tambre rivers. The latter is the bigger of the two rivers and has two bridges (the

Nafonso and a hanging bridge) and two hotels: the Pazo Tambre and Pesqueiras do Tambre. Tourism, sardine fishing, shellfishing (mussels, razor clams and cockles) and the local canning industry are the mainstays of the economy of an area in which women are as tough as the granite stone used to build the villages that have found a source of shelter and food along the Muros Noia estuary.

Domestic destination. A Coruña. Muros Noia Estuary.

Muros and Noia are two coastal towns of medieval origin in A Coruña with old parts that narrate a noble past associated with the sea and stone. Muros contains a blend of popular and noble architecture.

Its streets bear sad names –Solitude, Bitterness, etc– and are narrow, steep and stepped, with intersecting alleys. They feature a mix of fishermen’s dwellings, houses emblazoned with crests, and other buildings with modernist touches, including the Mercedes Theatre and Paris Cinema, whose balconies combine stone and wrought iron, and resemble the stern of a boat. Boats in Muros are not found only in the harbour. In addition to a baptismal font in the shape of a serpent swimming in holy water, the town’s old collegiate church, with its marine gothic interior, has relatively unpointed arches, little light and timber ceilings which give it the appearance of the hull of an upside-down boat. Muros can only be understood through its connection between religion and the sea. No sooner had they established their guild,

the local fishermen funded the building of the church. The town’s history cannot be understood either without the women who remained at home working and waiting for the menfolk to return from sea. A tribute to all these women exists in the form of a sculpture depicting an old lady with a shawl, sitting and looking out to sea.

San Martiño church boasts a miniportico of Glory with a rose window that no doubt impressed pilgrims of the day and still does so today.

These women are the estuary and they tell its story. Women such as the tireless Manoli Filgueira or Iria Caamaño, the guide who we follow and listen to in Noia, which is a seafaring town and the nearest harbour to Santiago de Compostela. In medieval days the harbour activity and 26

the arrival of pilgrims generated trade for the town, including a range of services for walkers (food, accommodation, clothes, footwear, etc) which allowed Noia to grow and attract many noble families as residents. This explains the large number of emblazoned houses found here, along with religious buildings such as the Franciscan convent from the renaissance period (later to become the town hall) and the church of San Martiño, considered a true gem of Galician gothic architecture.

As soon as you set eyes on the church, you sense it lacks a second tower. In fact, the tower was not built so as not to steal the limelight from the cathedral in Santiago. Despite this, San Martiño boasts a mini-portico of Glory and a rose window which no doubt impressed pilgrims of the day and still does so today. Just as the locals would have been impacted by the news of the accident that killed film director Claudio Guerín, who met his death when he fell from the top of the cardboard tower built for the film Bell from Hell.

Death is part and parcel of Noia’s daily life and urban features. Next to the Museum of Tombstones from different professional guilds that occupies the deconsecrated church of Santa María a Nova stands a graveyard which people walk through as if it were just another street in the town. The tombstones of the graveyard tell the entire history of Noia and of an estuary which bears two names because one would leave nobody happy.

Historic figure Van de Walle de Cervellón Van de Walle de Cervellón was a custodian of the San Lázaro hospital, as well as minister and chief justice, and a founding member of the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, an influential business and cultural association.

He is well known for his discovery in 1752 of the Belmaco cave engravings, in what is now the Belmaco Archaelogical Park in the town of Mazo. The engravings are considered to be the first aboriginal sites to be discovered in the Canaries.

Gran Canaria’s cheeses are considered a gastronomic marvel. Many have earned awards, as have others from elsewhere in the Canaries that also enrich the Islands’ cheese tradition. The island boasts approximately 130 cheese producers, with varieties to suit all tastes, including soft cheese, semi-cured, cured and also queso de flor (literally, flower cheese). Some are produced using rennet made from plants or animals, including native Canarian cows and goats.

This bird is frequently seen in the eastern Canary Islands and the Chinijo archipelago. A few dozen pairs have been sighted on the islets of Alegranza and Montaña Clara, north of Lanzarote, and they may also be breeding on La Graciosa. It feeds mainly on planktonic crustaceans and small fish.

Nearby in Calle de Los Balcones stands the Centre for Contemporary Art (CAAM), which was created thanks to an initiative by artist Martín Chirino, whose foundation is housed in the Castillo de La Luz, the old fortress built to defend the city against pirates and now a contemporary art centre in the Las Canteras and Port district.

The natural pools and beach at La Laja are the place to go if you are seeking something more original by way of activities. You can try Asian, European, American and African cuisine both indoors and, for much of the year, outdoors - thus combining eating with a pleasant climate.

An added bonus is the new generation of chefs who have revamped traditional Canarian gastronomy in many restaurants, including the Hotel Santa Catalina’s superlative Poemas by Hermanos Padrón, who now boast a Michelin star on their CV.

One of the major plus points of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is its programme of cultural and other events, which is in a par with bigger cities. If shopping is your thing, the city offers endless possibilities in its shopping districts in Mesa y López, Santa Catalina and the charming Triana quarter. Not forgetting its markets: Vegueta, the Port district’s gastromarket, the Central Market, and Altavista, ideal for local products and to wander around.

A UNIQUE SETTING This month’s walk is set entirely in Fuerteventura’s northernmost municipality, La Oliva. It commences at the foot of Mount Tindaya, one of the island’s iconic natural features and a sacred site for its original inhabitants.

We begin our walk in the town of Tindaya. Departing along the street called Calle Virgen de la Caridad, we follow the road through the dry and solitary Fuerteventura plains up to the north-west coast. After around six kilometres through sand and low scrub consisting of botsch and Discaria americana, we reach the sea near a headland known as Paso Chico.

The unique landscape here stands in sharp contrast to the typical images of Fuerteventura. The low, sandy and dune-filled coastline normally associated with the island is replaced by 30-metre plunging rock faces.

A similar phenomenon is found in the other Canary Islands also: these areas are the most exposed to the effects of the Atlantic storms which, over millions of years, have caused the coastline to retreat due to the force of the waves. However, in some spots such as ravine mouths or the inlets along Tindaya’s rugged coastline, small bays form that facilitate sand deposits.

This is the case of the pretty, secluded and tranquil Esquinzo and Águila beaches.

Our pleasant walk along the cliffs, which we break only to negotiate the deep Esquinzo ravine, lasts approximately eight kilometres and takes us to the Punta del Mallorquín headland. Here, the cliff faces end and give way to the long Aljibe and Castillo beaches, the prelude to the town of El Cotillo where our walk ends.

Doing the walk on the hottest days of the Fuerteventura summer is not advised.

Did you know? Cliffs like those in Tindaya are testimony to how the coastline has retreated over a period of millions of years. The coast extended much further west in the past.

THE LURE OF CHARM AND TRADITION Despite enjoying sunshine for much of the year, the south of La Gomera offers relatively few easy-to-reach spots with family-friendly, sandy beaches and food and shopping possibilities. From San Sebastián to Valle Gran Rey, one place meets these requirements more than any other: Playa Santiago in the municipality of Alajeró.

It actually has two lovely sandy beaches, with calm waters thanks to the shelter provided by the adjoining harbour, and – just behind these – a main road and square situated in a village which, despite its many apartments, retains the charm of the southern parts of the Canaries which witnessed the development of tourism in the 1980s.

Beaches. La Gomera. Playa Santiago

Playa Santiago is one of the best-known spots on the La Gomera coast. Together with Valle Gran Rey (in the south-west) and the island capital of San Sebastián (south-east), it is one of the main seaside locations offering sandy beaches suitable for the whole family.

When tourism began to flourish in the southern towns of the Canary Islands in the 1970s, this coastal village in Alajeró also experienced a proliferation of apartments, although not to excess and without reaching the level of development seen elsewhere. As a result, Playa Santiago retains its village atmosphere, with fresh fish arriving via its small harbour, and this gives its two picturesque beaches a more authentic and cared-for appearance reminiscent of the south coast in bygone days.

If you arrive on La Gomera by plane, it is just a short journey from the airport. If you arrive in the capital by ferry, you only need to take the main GM-2 road and then the GM-3 down to the coast. Once there, the main road (Avenida Marítima) takes you to the harbour, restaurants and

shops, and beaches. You are advised to grab the first parking spot you see, particularly on sunny days, at weekends or during holiday periods. The harbour’s breakwater and a smaller vertical one protect the beach zone and ensure the sea is generally calm and therefore ideal for families. The beach situated further south-west is even calmer. More popular with children and older people, this one has more sand, particularly on the corner which is almost on the bend leading to the harbour and next to a small jetty.

A wide pavement, with bigger accesses and an assortment of palm trees, makes it easy to get from one beach to the other or to the commercial premises opposite. The more eastern of the beaches tends to attract younger people. Even though this one also has two small breakwaters that reduce the impact of the waves, extra care needs to be taken with the sea here, as the lifeguards who look after the safety of beachgoers regularly remind you.

The sun is a regular visitor and although there are some spots with stones and pebbles, the sandy parts are very inviting for sunbathing and a swim to cool off.

Beyond the second beach is a large stretch with bigger stones, stronger currents and bigger waves. However, the big attractions here are the parties and the atmosphere of its famous bar, when open.

CANARY ISLANDS ALMOST BACK TO PRE-PANDEMIC TOURISM NUMBERS February saw the Canary Islands begin to glimpse a return to the visitor numbers enjoyed before the outbreak of the pandemic. From zero tourism, the year’s second month at last saw the figures shoot up and the 968,004 arrivals represented an increase of 1203.2 % compared to February 2021.

According to figures published in April by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the Canaries posted the highest market share, with 30.7 % of Spain’s total inbound tourism. The islands recorded 83% of the pre-pandemic figure for foreign tourists. In February, the Canaries achieved figures close to their peak winter season figures and the levels normally enjoyed before coronavirus caused numbers to plummet at world level.

Spain as a whole welcomed 3.2 million foreign tourists in February, 1007.8 % more than the same month in 2021 and 71 % of the pre-pandemic figure.

ARAGÓN AMONG TOP ACTIVE TOURISM DESTINATIONS Adventure tourism, particularly in the case of young people, is recovering after the pandemic and Aragón is one of the areas to notice the recovery, as reflected in the creation of new businesses offering visitors unique and thrilling experiences.

The main reason is the increased provision at national level and Aragón is now the second leading region in terms of such businesses. It comes behind only Andalusia according to the latest report by the National Association of Active Tourism Companies (Aneta) on the situation of active tourism in Spain during the Covid-19 crisis. Our inner world needs to be visited and cared for. Disregarding our feelings does not stop us from being affected by things and only through awareness can we move forward in our lives.

Only now that the pandemic is beginning to fade are we starting to realise the repercussions it has had on us. We now talk about its direct impact on our mental health and how it has put our resilience and emotions to the test.

However, we are not accustomed to observing ourselves and thinking about up how our mental health is being affected in our daily lives. Even where we do, we take longer to seek help to manage such issues.

This situation enables us to reflect on the level of care we devote to our mental and emotional levels, something we tend to neglect as a general rule. We usually pay more attention to and seek means and solutions for our physical ailments or problems.

The pandemic threw up difficult situations which have unquestionably had a major impact on our inner selves: grieving, social isolation, increased tension, the loss of social support. All this led us to experience fear, frustration, anger, uncertainty, emotional overload …

Now that we realise the importance of mental health for our lives, the time has come to think about how to look after it. Learning to recognise our emotions helps us mange them.

Depending on their sociocultural, financial and personal circumstances, everyone has been vulnerable to some extent in recent years. Many people have suffered either isolated symptoms or more complex disorders such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, complicated grief and post-traumatic stress.

Although we cannot change the experiences that life puts our way, how we go through them and cope with them is in our own hands. The process of gradually acquiring the habit of self-observation to understand how and why each situation affects us is a slow one.

All this at a time when, unfortunately, mental health care has a low profile in the Spanish Health Service, which lacks the resources to address this social need. Moreover, society has not yet internalised this health need properly and few people invest in attending to this facet of their lives.

Once we recognise what is happening to us, we can put our different resources to use and identify our potential and limitations.

Without forgetting the difficulties we have had to face of late, now is a good time to highlight the importance of caring for our inner self. To learn to identify what is happening to us, how we are experiencing it and what tools are available to help us feel better and achieve one the key pillars to ensuring the best possible health.

Once we recognise what is happening to us, we can put to use the different resources we have available: identify our potential and limitations; look at the situation objectively and take the drama out of it; put our creativity to work to come up with solutions; use our social support network and seek help when needed; trust in our ability; increase our mental flexibility to empathise and to accept difference; limit our exposure to negative events by surrounding ourselves with people who transmit their positive outlook to us and enrich us personally.

Our health and wellbeing depend on four key pillars: food, exercise, rest and mental health. All four are unquestionably intertwined and the failure of one has a knock-on effect on the others.

For example, all of us have suffered stressful moments due to different events and these have led to sleeping problems or a lack of restorative sleep.

Without proper rest, everything becomes more sombre and negative; we find it difficult to be objective and see a positive side to things. We may also stop eating or, in other cases, eat more but unhealthily. Needless to say, this all means we have less vitality and energy to move and do exercise. Even if we do exercise, it requires additional effort for a body illequipped to meet these energy needs.

All this may seem very new to us initially and will require some effort to incorporate into our lives. However, it is the key to securing the wellbeing we desire. Instilling a new habit requires patience, perseverance and time. Are you up for it?

Madre (Mother) narrates the fortunes and misfortunes of Anisa Brahimi, better known as Mother Courage, and her children. From her dilapidated wagon, Anisa ends up personally suffering the cost of the armed conflict between the Moroccan forces of occupation and the Saharans, with whom she trades unscrupulously. On view here is a character who profits from the ravages of war and pain of others. However, as is only fitting, the day will arrive when she has to pay her share for exploiting the war for her own good.

CANARIAN PRODUCTS THAT ALSO COME IN JARS The traveller is back in action, even more enthusiastically than before having left behind –hopefully– a pandemic that curtailed plans to discover all eight Canary Islands and their food spots. Albeit with some degree of caution still, it is time to place the spotlight on local Canarian produce, one shaped by the islands’ soils, microclimates and the culinary legacy fashioned by their cultural mix.

Local produce, pure and simple. Produce we can admire in allotments and on farms, in cheese factories, markets … Fruit, vegetables, fish from the Atlantic, meats to be seasoned and eaten with relish.

With spring now here, the traveller will look in particular at how all this wealth of produce is processed and turned into delicious jams and preserves. It is another way to understand the Canaries’ wealth of culinary culture, which will be described below.

Our journey begins in La Gomera in the company of chef Ancor Sánchez, who for years has been making fruit jams to accompany his signature dishes or as topping for his famous ice cream. Loquat, apple cake, tomato… «This jam can be enjoyed in the morning on toast but is even better with a piece of cheese; also great are the quality preserves made with seasonal fruit, including our wonderful mangos». «I have been making the tomato jam for many, many years; I add special touches using, for example, an infusion or cardamom. Let’s not forget the lovely pumpkins from here, which make a lovely one also», he explains.

Crunchy coatings and delicious fillings with products from an allotment on which vines grow also. Dried tomato with black olives, home-grown pumpkin with Fuerteventura paprika-coated cheese, freerange chicken and the obligatory tuna.

And the traveller wonders «What could be more sustainable than a ‘wrapping’ that you can actually eat?». While gesturing for another Yareli croquette, the traveller now heads to Buenavista del Norte (in Tenerife), where for the past 14 years they have been processing seasonal fruits and vegetables by hand to get the very best out of them.

With loving care, the Contreras sisters make artisanal liqueurs and jams using products from the Teno Rural Park. Only seasonal source ingredients are used, including pumpkin, courgette, passion fruit, papaya, peppers, tomatoes and figs, which they themselves pick locally and in nearby Los Silos. It is a real pleasure to get tipsy on the drinks made from herbs such as lemon verbena or lemon balm, as well as from passion fruit, liquorice, coffee, cinnamon, lemon, orange, mandarin orange, and one that really goes down superbly: red figs.

News from Binter

SUMMER BRINGS NEW CONNECTIONS TO MADEIRA FROM VARIOUS CANARY ISLANDS Airline Binter last month announced further and improved flight connections, commencing in July, from the Canary Islands to Madeira as well as to several destinations in West Africa, including Dakar, Agadir and Marrakesh.

The highlight of the amended schedule is the major focus on Madeira, a destination served by Binter since it launched its first international routes in 2005. Routes to the island will nearly double in number, increasing from four in 2021 to seven this year.

BINTER TO START FLIGHTS TO FIVE NEW INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC DESTINATIONS IN JULY July sees the launch of direct Binter flights from the Canaries to Florence (Italy), Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Fez (Morocco), as well as to two domestic destinations: Valladolid and Menorca. In addition, some routes such as Banjul and Sal will be reinstated, as will flights between Jerez de la Frontera and Gran Canaria. Flights to Pamplona will also be increased.

Under the most comprehensive schedule of flights to destinations outside the Islands in its entire history, the airline will offer thirteen more routes than in 2021 and up to two hundred direct flights every week between the Canaries and 31 international and Spanish airports. A record one million seats will be available to destinations outside the Canaries.

Likewise, the service to Fez Airport (FEZ) will operate on Saturdays, departing Gran Canaria at 11:30 and returning at 15:15.

From 2 July, Binter will operate weekly flights to three new and highly attractive destinations in Italy, Morocco and the Azores. A Saturday service to Florence (FLR) will depart from Gran Canaria at 09:30, with the return from the Italian city leaving at 15:30. Flights to Ponta Delgada (PDL) will also operate on Saturdays, departing Gran Canaria at 08:30 and returning from the capital of the Azores at 10:30.

From 1 July, Binter will commence direct flights once a week to Valladolid and Menorca. Flights to Valladolid (VLL) will operate on Fridays, departing Gran Canaria at 16:05. Flights to Menorca (MAH) will also operate on Fridays, departing Gran Canaria at 08:30.

RESUMPTION OF ROUTES TO CAPE VERDE AND THE GAMBIA The improved health situation allows Binter to gradually resume its connections to certain destinations in West Africa. Accordingly, from 23 June, flights to Banjul (BJL) in The Gambia will be reinstated and will operate every Thursday, departing Gran Canaria at 23:00 and returning at 01:40 on Fridays.

In addition, from 5 July Binter will fly once a week to the island of Sal (SID) in Cape Verde. Departures will be every Tuesday at 23:00, with the return departing Sal at 00:35 on Wednesdays.
