From the President Man how time flies!! Yes a year has come and gone. Get ready for a new president, and new board members here at NTHBA starting October 6th.

As the President, I had a few items that I wanted to concentrate on.

Special Thanks to our 2016 NTHBA Partners: Diamond Atmos Energy

1) Was keeping the organization in the black.

Thanks to the Budget & By-laws committee members for their help, also to all the members for being a part of this effort.

2) Making sure NTHBA had a good relationship with the City, and stay involve with the code enforcement department.

NTHBA had many of our members work with the City in different capacities, and on different boards within the City.

Thanks to all.

3) Stay in touch with the Texas Association of Builders. We have had outstanding attendance during the TAB meetings this year.

The 2016 Parade of Homes went well. Even with a schedule change, and a little rain we met our goals. Thanks to the POH committee, and everyone else that made this event a success.

The Young Professionals have had a great year and are planning a clay shoot for October 14th.

The Christmas party will be a big hit this year. Please plan to attend. It is scheduled for December 1st.

The monthly lunch meetings have been outstanding. Again thanks to everyone for your assistance and support.

The 2015 International Energy Conservation Code went into effect on September 1st. All the builders should have update information on this code, and what the City is sending to the city council. Again many thanks to the folks that have helped with this change, and also thanks to Bobby Teague with the City for allowing NTHBA to have some input.

Benefits of LED lighting is topic at September membership luncheon of home builders association

Tommy Ayers of The Lantern House discussed the value of LED lighting at the September membership luncheon of the North Texas Home Builders Association held Thursday, September 1, at the Kemp Center for the Arts.

For the consumer or business, he noted that LED lighting can curb energy usage through the application of new LED designed lighting or retrofitting of legacy lighting fixtures and create a more pleasing lighting environment.

“Why should you choose LED lighting,” he asked? “There are four reasons to use the latest new technological advancement in the lighting industry. These include longer life span (50,000 hours), lower energy usage (85 percent more efficient), reduced maintenance costs and higher safety.”

Thus, he noted LED lighting is economical, efficient, eco-friendly and human centric.

“Technology is growing. LEDs are projected to save Americans $26 billion a year all while cutting the nation’s electrical usage by nearly half!”

He added, “LEDs are on an impressive development path. They are a real alternative to traditional lamps. The last five years: 65 lumens per watt to over 90 lumens per watt. Next five to seven years: 150 lumens per watt.”

Ayers explained, “A standard A-19 lamp (your traditional light bulb) uses 60 watts to illuminate the filament inside the light bulb. A halogen lamp uses 43 watts for the same light levels, while a LED A-19 uses only nine watts and gives a third more light output and anywhere from 15 to 25 times Continues on page 5

more life. “Thus you are getting more light, longer bulb life, using less watt and enjoying more brightness (lumens).”

According to Ayers, the incandescent lamps are the least economical lamps, while LED lamps are the most economical lamps.

Ayers also explained the difference between watts and lumens. “The past standard of measurement was how many watts a lamps used.

The Department of Energy (DOE) changed the designation to Lumens years back. The present standard of measurement is lumens which is a lamp’s brightness.”

He also stressed savings through LED bulb longevity. “A standard incandescent lamp should last 750 to 1000 hours based on a 130-volt lamp. LED lamps should have 15,000 to 25,000 hours of useful life. Because of this you will see less landfill impact.”

Ayers also said “Human Centric Lighting” is the future. “Get ready to embrace it. We will be seeing more on the direction of HCL in the coming years.”

He explained, “Human Centric Lighting deals with Circadian Rhythm in our lives. Circadian Rhythms are physical, mental and behavioral changes that follow a roughly 24-hour cycle, responding primarily to light and darkness in one’s environment. Carefully designed lighting can aid even correct, circadian rhythms in humans. For example, 200 years ago, 90 percent of our waking time was spent outside. Now most of us spend 90 percent of our waking time inside, usually under one color of light.

“With the advent of LED Lamps we are beginning to see changes as to how lighting impacts and interacts in the home and workplace. ADHD — by changing the color temps of light we can change effects of certain disorders in children. Hospitals are finding that following a circadian rhythm cycle helps speed recovery time of patients under certain condition. For airlines, overseas flights are incorporating circadian rhythm lighting in aircrafts resulting in less jet lag of passengers as they exit the planes. Workplaces also are changing lighting color and intensity during working hours and experiencing an increase in production of worker output.”

He predicted, “By 2020, LEDs will take over 90 percent of the human-centric lighting space. Light affects emotions. Depression in winter months is related to light levels. The darker the light levels the more moody we feel. The brighter the light levels the happier we feel. Human Centric Lighting corrects circadian rhythms. He predicted that usage of LED lighting will continue to grow for residences, business and retail use. “Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) is a bidirectional high-speed, fully networked wireless communication technology. The term was coined by Harald Hass.

Haas is German Professor of Mobile Communications at the University of Edinburgh. A form of visible light communication is a subset of optical wireless communications (OWC). It will have the capability multitasking using a single or multiple luminaires.�

He added, “The LED lamp will preform: Data analytics, Daylight harvesting, Footfall, security on premises, and many other applications.�

For example, Ayers explained, “The eye of this ecosystem is a custom-engineered sensing ASIC chip. It is designed to capture environmental data and human activity, along with the capability to monitor LED chip performance. Facing downwards for external data, the sensors detect motion, direction, footfall and ambient light levels and temperature. Facing upwards, the sensors detect internal data as it monitors light output, color temperature, quality and operating temperatures. “So the future is close. Soon we will be able to control the environment of our homes and businesses though a single light bulb.�

He stressed, “What LED lighting does is solve problems.� It does this through energy efficiency, better maintained light levels,instant-on in all applications, smart lighting applications, excellent color rendition, reduced maintenance cost and longer life.�

Ayers then showed examples of retrofitting buildings and offices with LED lighting. It made a huge difference both with interior and exterior lighting.

Lastly, Ayers discussed LED Lighting’s visual impact. “The Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a scale from 0 to 100 percent indicating how accurate a ‘given’ light source is at rendering color when compared to a ‘reference’ light source. The higher the CRI, the better the color rendering ability. “High CRI bulbs are ideal for places where you want to see the true color of something. Picking the correct color temperature enhances no only surface you are illuminating but also enhances seeablity. Outside, an LED lighting’s visual impact creates curb appeal and makes a residence more inviting.�

As for color temperature, “Light Color is measured in terms of ‘degrees Kelvin,’ Daylight is approximately 5600-degrees Kelvin, a single candle is approximately 800 degrees, an incandescent lamp is approximately 2700 degrees and midday blue sky approaches 10,000-degrees Kelvin.�

He concluded by leaving the audience with five things to look for in LED lamps. “Lumens is the amount of light that precedes from a light-source.

Watts is the amount of energy used. Footcandles is the amount of light that falls on a surface. Color Temperature is the color of the light source. The higher the color temperature the bluer the light.

When using dimmers remember to use only LED dimmers with LED lamps. Look for compatibility on the manufactures website. Beam angle determines the amount of coverage and light you want on a surface. Warranties vary in length and promises.�

The North Texas Home Builders Association is proud to be have been able to support our 363rd Training Squadron for Hotter N’ Hell in August. With a monetary donation from the NTHBA Lt. Col. Thorp and members of his squadron were able to fellowship with one another while they cut, painted and put together the lively Nintendo themed rest stop. With many hours of preparation and early rising on August 27th the 363rd squadron eagerly handed out water, fruits and other snacks to riders as they would stop to catch their breath.

Thank you 363rd Training Squadron for your service at SAFB keeping our country safe and giving back to Wichita Falls community.

7th Annual Golf Tournament a Big Success The North Texas Home Builders Association’s 7th Annual Golf Tournament was another huge success thanks again, to you the members who graciously support our events and others who participated.

Leading up to tournament day we were convinced we would be rescheduling but instead we were blessed with perfect weather and a fantastic turn out. 26 teams hit the course after enjoying a Barbeque lunch sponsored by Morrison Supply Company and hitting a few range balls sponsored

by Lonestar Wastewater to get loosened up and ready to play.

NTHBA directors Sharon Tucker with Atmos Energy, Jake Munholland with Pilgrim Bank and member Randy Schaffner set up the registration table with goody bags to hand out, a table with door prizes to display and help Vice President Michael Grassi hang sponsorship banners. EVP Teri Gibson took care of last minute things such as making sure there was prize money to hand out and get tickets to hand out to purchase drinks and win door prizes. NTHBA volunteers Angela Haisten with Union Square Federal Credit Union, Jean Taylor with Archer Title of Texas and Kathie Davis with First National Bank of Wichita Falls gathered with Sharon & Teri to register players, hand out goody bags and give directions before the tournament began.

Member Jeff Boyd spent his morning setting up 48 hole sponsor signs and making sure the tournament drink sponsor Herb Easley Chevrolet knew where to display their shiny new vehicles.

The tournament featured prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 13th and Last Place, 8 hole $25.00 gift card hole prizes and a Scotty Cameron Putter hole prize donated by Kathie Davis and Scott Flinn from First National Bank of Wichita Falls Mortgage. Door Prizes consisted of 4 Stanley tape measures donated by Tommy Johnson of Dutch Watson Cabinets, 2 Stanley tool sets and tiled clock donated by John Thompson of Lowe’s, a Texas flag window donated
