From the President Dear Members, I recently attended the National Home Builders Show in Las Vegas. The Show was an overwhelming experience to say the least. It was also in conjunction with the Kitchen and Bath Show.

There were so many items on display, from software, building materials, computer hardware just to name a few. For future reference, I would recommend to plan ahead for what are the top three items you would like to accomplish at the show, then plan appropriately in order to achieve your plan.

Two classes I attended where the “10 Secrets to a Being a Successful Builder” and the “Why Build Inventory” class. Both classes had some of the freshest and most beneficial information that I had been privy to in years. The amount and content of classes available are on a wide range of subjects, and most classes have a 1 hour limit, which is especially beneficial for us ADHD people. Lots of great info packed into a short time period.

I also attend the Texas Caucus Meeting. The big take away from this meeting is the work Build Pac, our National Political Action Committee’s accomplishments. In short, Build Pac saved each builder $6,200.00 PER HOUSE in fees that would have been added by our government had it not been for the efforts of Build Pac. I know it’s not easy to give hard earned dollars to an organization that is not seen everyday in our day to day operations. But rest assured every dollar you and I give to our Texas Home Pac and to our National Build Pac is working to help represent us builders and associates at both the State and National level to keep things in check.

NORTEX HOUSING FINANCE CORPORATION Founded in 1995, the NORTEX Housing Finance Corporation is a Texas non-profit corporation formed by counties in the NORTEX Regional Planning area, which is authorized by the State of Texas to issue bonds for housing finance. Single-family mortgage revenue bonds are the most common, which provide down payment assistance or lower than market rate loan programs to low and moderate, first-time homebuyer families.

Other bond programs may include single-family taxable, multi-family, and essential function.

NORTEX programs are available to eleven counties – Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cottle, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young. Vice President Report March 6 2014 North Texas Home Builders Association will host an evening event with the City of Wichita Falls Building Inspection Department at Rick Belz Good Time Party Barn at 3136 Arena Road from 5:30 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 7:30 P.M. The program will be the Top 10 Code Violations. Atmos Energy will be providing the meal. All builders and sub-contractors (Electricians, Plumbers, Concrete contractors, HVAC contractors, Professional insulators and anyone who is required to pull permits to do the work of their businesses and have final inspections are invited and encouraged to attend.

The week of February 2-7, 2014 Barney, Ed Holcomb and John Harmon attended the 2014 International Builder Show (IBS) sponsored by the National Association of Builders in Las Vegas Nevada. On Tuesday Barney attended the Area 12 Texas Caucus and the three of them attended the Texas Reception sponsored by the Texas Association of Builders where they met with the area Vice President Gene Lantrip out of Abilene, TAB Executive Director Scott Norman and were introduced to the TAB Leadership. During the IBS John said he had the opportunity to meet custom builders from all over the nation who are seeing the building business slowly making a rebound from the recession across most of the nation. NAHB stated that 2013 saw a 15-18% increase in new home starts and 2014 is predicted to have a 20-25% increase in new home starts. The main consensus from most builders is the building industry is slowly getting stronger but is still 50% below pre-recession figures. Texas is leading the nation in the rebound with West Texas and South Texas leading the way due to housing needs generated by the oil industry. Thank goodness we live in Texas.

Barney Brock, John Harmon and Jose Garcia will be attending the TAB Winter Board Meetings February 26th & 27th in Austin, Texas. All three have committees they will be serving on representing the interest of the North Texas Home Builders Association. The main focus for TAB this year is the upcoming elections. TAB will be distributing contributions to various elected officials that are currently running. Races at the state level are for the Governor, Lt. Governor, Texas Land Commissioner, as well as numerous Representatives and Senators. Harmon stated that Texas leads the nation with not only building recovery but in all aspects of recovery from the recession.

Sen. Craig Estes addresses February gathering of North Texas Home Builders Saying the upcoming Republican primary “is where it’s at,” State Senator Craig Estes urged everyone to get involved and to vote March 4 as he addressed the February Membership Luncheon of the North Sen. Craig Estes shakes hands with John Harmon following his speech on Texas Home Builders Association at Wednesday to the North Texas Home noon,Wednesday, at the Kemp Center Builders Association for the Arts.

Adding that this is an interesting political season both in Texas and nationally, Sen. Estes said is supporting Republicans Greg Abbott for governor and David Dewhurst for lieutenant governor.

Sen. Estes, who has represented the North Texas area in the state senate since 2001, noted that as chairman of the Senate’s Agriculture, Rural, and Homeland Security Committee, he has had “an extremely quick education” concerning homeland security and the Texas border security.

“Securing the border must be our first priority!”

In talking about the Texas economy, Sen. Estes quoted a Time magazine story that said the United States should be run like Texas has been run during the past 12 years. He gave a great deal of the credit to Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, and speakers of the Texas House of Representative Tom Craddick and Joe Strauss for the growth in the Texas economy during those 12 years.

“Texas has now surpassed California in tech imports. We have also added 331,000 tech jobs in Texas. I have had a front row seat during the last 12 years watching Texas growth.”

He added that more people are moving into Texas every day.

This is causing a strain on the state’s transportation system and water resources. “People are moving to Texas is record numbers to take advantage of the business and economic opportunities offered by our state.”

As for the budget passed during the last legislative session, Sen. Estes praised the emphasis on water resources and the $3.4 billion added to public school funding. He talked about how the “rainy day” fund has grown primarily due to increases in oil and natural gas severance taxes and how a portion of that fund is being used to increase water resources.

He said the legislature has had to set priorities while keeping the budget in balance. He said the budget is actually decreased 11.5 percent compared to 10 years ago. He quote President Ronald Reagan about government and budgets.

“Reagan said, ‘Reduce the government’s budget and leave the family budget alone.’”

In other business, John Harmon announced that the parade of Homes entry deadline is March. 1. The 2014 Parade of Homes isJune 7-15. Barney Brock, Eddie Holcomb and John Harmon represented the association at the annual International Home Show held recently in Las Vegas.

NAHB Opposition to PATH Act May Stop it in its Tracks Jeb Hensarling, the House Financial Services Chairman and author of the controversial PATH Act (HR2767), said last week at a conference hosted by Heritage Action for America that opposition to the act is rapidly eroding its chances of enactment.

We told you last summer about NAHB's opposition to the legislation, which would restructure the nation's housing finance system without a federal backstop to guarantee mortgages in the event of another housing finance market catastrophe.

While we agree that private capital must have a much larger role in the housing finance market, perhaps the most important lesson from the housing market crisis is that only the federal government has the resources to reasonably serve as a backstop in case of another crisis.

Without such a backstop, financing will be more expensive and harder to obtain, and important consumer products like the 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage might disappear altogether.

Rep. Hensarling's comments provide proof of the effectiveness of NAHB's grassroots advocacy efforts and the federation's multi-faceted approach to achieving its legislative goals. There's no doubt that sentiment in the House has been affected by NAHB members who have met with their Representatives to explain how harmful the PATH Act's provisions would be to the housing market. And clearly, our testimony and more formal contacts with members of the House have been effective as well.

To put it in the language they use on Capitol Hill, it's obvious that NAHB has "a seat at the table," and you can count on us being a strong voice for housing when Congress eventually addresses restructuring of the housing finance system. Contact: Jim Tobin 800-368-5242, x8258.

Many members can’t always see what the benefits are to being members of TAB or NAHB. Here is just one small example. It takes everyone contributing to these entities to have the “Seat at the Table”. Remember to do your part and give to HOMEPAC and BUILDPAC so they are able to continue to fight for what is important to keep the home building industry strong and profitable.

Leadership - "What Style at What Time?" free-reign leadership; things are moving smoothly, goals are being met, volunteers have that feeling of accomplishment.

You cannot be a successful leader if you start off as free-reign.

Certain qualities are needed to be a good leader. While these qualities are important your style of leadership will dictate whether you go from a good leader to an effective leader. Choosing a style of leadership will be determined by the nature of the initiative and its overall priority within the HBA. For this article, I will refer to committees, task forces and working groups as initiatives.

What Style at What Time?

There are many styles of leadership but when you break them down, and categorize, you find that each fall into one of three groups. We will refer to these groups as styles: â&#x20AC;˘ Autocratic: This leader is take charge, always in control. He or she will have a strong tendency to micro-manage or completely "run the show." â&#x20AC;˘ Participative: This leader delegates, keeping the whole group engaged.Will set a plan, with a matrix, and let's those chosen with certain roles free to carry out their portion of the overall plan. The participative leader will clear roadblocks so others can remain focused and will give guidance if asked and will support a decision if it is consistent with the goals and desired outcome of the initiative. â&#x20AC;˘ Free-reign: This leader is hands off and lets the group dictate what the needs and actions should be for the entire initiative.

Free-reign has a time and a place but some leaders to choose to go this path. Some may say it's a good way to lead, to have others set the plan for the group, have others craft the matrix and let others decide the rest. Here is my opinion; others were not asked by the HBA president to lead the initiative. You were. You will be the person others will see when the initiative is not as successful as it could have been. There is a time and a place for "once in a while"

There will be times where you will need to be autocratic, depending on the timeline of the set plan and whether or not the short term or long term matrix is falling behind.

Sometimes the volunteers are not performing as they agree to when given the opportunity they chose to take.

The leader of this initiative will have to step in and pick up the slack or dropped item.

The participative leader blends a little free-reign and more than a little autocratic into this style. This leader has a plan set and works with the group. This leader will take full responsibility for lack of results but will give full credit to the members working the initiative and will highlight to HBA leadership those who deserve the accolades. This style of leader will also help to identify future leaders of the initiative and work for an energized transition.

Charismatic: This leader is needed when morale is low and motivation has stagnated. Being creative, with passion, is required to achieve the goal(s) of this initiative.

Visionary: This leader will identify tomorrow and all that it has to offer and what changes, slight to radical that may be needed for the future.

The Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Firstâ&#x20AC;? 3D-Printed House Begins Construction

written January 22, 2014 from 3-D Industry News In March of last year, Ari gave an in-depth review of the 3D Print Canal House, what is projected to be the â&#x20AC;&#x153;firstâ&#x20AC;? 3D printed house.

At that point in time, the architects of Dutch firm DAS had built the printer, titled KamerMaker XL (Dutch for â&#x20AC;&#x153;room makerâ&#x20AC;?), and were in the process of printing 1:20 scale parts the building.

Less than a year has passed and DAS is moving onto the big show, the actual 3D printing of the components for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;firstâ&#x20AC;? 3D printed house.

KamerMaker XL, a 3.5 m tall FFF printer, made its way to the Buiksloter Canal in Amsterdam on January 6, where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already begun printing. The printer, more or less a large RepRap housed in a shipping container, is using a type of plastic â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an 80% bio-based hotmelt, developed by German chemical company Henkel â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to print pieces that will be assembled into a complete house. The projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website describes the process:

Each room is printed separately on site before being assembled into one house. This way the rooms can be carefully tested in a safe and easy accessible manner. Each room is different and consists of complex and tailormade architecture and unique design features. The structure is scripted and this creates its proper strength but also generates ornament, and allows for new types of smart features, such as angled shading scripted to the exact solar angle. which are joined together as large Lego-like blocks. Both the outside façade as the interior are printed at once, in one element.

Within the 3D printed walls are spares for connecting construction, cables, pipes, communication technique, wiring etc.

The rooms themselves are entirely structurally sound. In the second phase of the project, the separate rooms are assembled into connected floors, and then stacked into the entire house.

Added advantage is that the rooms can fairly easy be disconnected in case the house needs to be relocated.

DAS has already demonstrated the scale of objects that they can print, including the enormous 3D printed bench pictured below.

The printing of the home and its assembly by construction company Heijmans is projected to take about three years. That gives other groups also racing to complete the â&#x20AC;&#x153;firstâ&#x20AC;? 3D printed building some time to enact a more efficient house printing process.

Because the site of 3D Print Canal House will also act as a space for research into architecture and additive construction, each room of the home will be dedicated to different research areas.

One research area is into the use of smart data for efficiency purposes: â&#x20AC;&#x153;3D Print Canal House will have a smart â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;data fireplaceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at the heart of the house. It distributes all resources such as water, energy and smart domotica and connects all rooms. As normally you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see data, the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;smart data fireplaceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; visualizes in a poetic manner the energy & data usage in the houseâ&#x20AC;ŚResearch topics are: How can we print with conducting material? The larger aim of the project is to meet the housing needs of the 7 billion people on the planet, DUS architect Hans Vermeulen explains in the video below. Vermeulen seeks to address the sub-standard shelter for the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s poor that has developed in megacities across the globe. Though the firm doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ultimately wish to use plastic for the construction of buildings, the architect points out that â&#x20AC;&#x153;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not that we think everyone should live in a plastic house, ha ha. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the material that works at the moment.â&#x20AC;?
