Bowaters are proud to stand alongside the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce. It is with a great deal of pride that Chris Bowater and the team at Bowater Hyundai are continuing to carry on the support of the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce with this stunning new vehicle for Ali and her team. COMMERCE COMMENT
I
n this issue of Commerce Comment we are very happy to be presenting and most importantly, celebrating the 24 organisations who have entered the 2021 Nelson Pine Industries Business Awards. Congratulations to them all for taking this step in what is not an easy working environment. The Awards have been running since 1988 and are undoubtedly a highlight of our year. They give us the opportunity to highlight some of the fantastic businesses operating in our region and the dedicated, innovative, tenacious people behind them. Hats off to you all. And of course, the best of luck. Covid is still looming large in our lives, and I am longing for the day (or even just one day would be nice) when I don’t read about it, hear about it on the radio or watch it on TV. Sadly, it does feel as though that is still a long way off and we are certainly beginning to see the stress beginning to show. Not surprising with the border still closed, supply chains disrupted and the country at various levels of lockdowns. Not to mention people separated from family or unable to travel for business due to MIQ restrictions. Now while that is a depressing list but there is a reason for me saying it out loud (so to speak). While we are now all au fait with the various practical support packages and programmes that are available it is also important that we seek out emotional support when we need it. “Going it alone” is rarely a good strategy when dealing with complex stressful situations and the old adage “a problem shared is a problem halved” is a good one to remember. If you do need to share the load, or know someone that clearly does, even if they are not seeing it themselves, then please reach out. There are some useful links at the bottom of this page, or catch up with
an old friend, or someone you trust and just talk things through. It is amazing how much clearer things can seem when they are not spinning around in your mind. I now feel the need to end on a positive note. Last week, the Project Kōkiri partnership led by our Colab partners at the NRDA launched “We’ve Got You”. This is an extension to the awardwinning “We’ve Got This” campaign from last year. Again, the message is simple, show our local business some love and support them through these hard times. Money spent with local suppliers stays local and helps to get the economy moving and keep moving. So enjoy a night out with friends, take a holiday at home and (sorry to use the C word in October) shop early for Christmas! Carol has worked with grit and determination throughout her entire career, but perhaps never more so than in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Within a week, Carol found herself with all forward bookings for that year cancelled or postponed. However, she quickly found an opportunity to keep her staff employed while serving the Nelson community. She began offering restaurant-quality meals delivered to the door through her website, keeping the elderly and vulnerable and wider Nelson community fed and her business very much alive. Carol has built Gourmet Catering on a founding principle that she learnt early in her hospitality career. By always putting people first, profits will follow; Gourmet Catering’s success shows that this mantra has served her well.

The Nelson Giants is an iconic Nelson sporting brand with a proud history: we are the only team to have competed in New Zealand’s top domestic basketball competition, the National Basketball League, every year since its inception in 1982. The Nelson Giants and the NBL jointly celebrated our 40th seasons this year. The Giants were NBL Champions in 1994, 1998 and 2007, and have made the grand final on eight other occasions. We have a strong record of developing local players and coaches, including current Tall Blacks star Finn Delany and former players Mika Vukona, Phill Jones and Nenad Vucinic. The Giants have always enjoyed strong community support from our passionate Nelson fans. The return of live games in Nelson in 2021 saw regular ‘sold out’ signs once again hang outside the Trafalgar Centre on game nights. Off the court, the Nelson Giants’ focus is on growing basketball in our region. The “Giants in Schools” programme, delivered every year since 1990, sees Giants players providing primary school children with an introduction to basketball, while also promoting the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. The Giants are proud of this positive impact on our young people.
Its mission is to weave individuals, households, civil society organisations, businesses, councils and iwi together around urgent, strategic action on climate change in the Nelson-Tasman region. The Forum is organised into a set of working groups, each focussing on different topics such as what we make, buy and waste, supporting nature and storing carbon, and how we move ourselves and our stuff around.. To date the Forum has been heavily involved in making submissions to local and central government, hosting events around sustainable practices and educating communities on carbon emission reduction. Forum members make valuable contributions to public conversations and are on hand to act as advisors. They have published The Climate Action Book; a comprehensive guide to emissions reduction specific to the Nelson Tasman region - from a governance level, through business and local community organisations, to the individual at home. The Climate Action Book launched in May and is free to download from their website.

Nelson-based company Noologica Ltd was formed in 2019 to build on the ground-breaking research of Dr Fabián Labra-Spröhnle into the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. This research, which earned him a PhD from Victoria University, culminated in the development of a computer-based game and the mathematical analysis (using fractals and machine learning techniques) of the players’ responses to detect the behavioural ‘signature’ of ADHD. The method was validated in a clinical trial conducted by the Nelson Marlborough Health NMH. Further trials are now being conducted at institutions in Turkey and Estonia. Noologica (the name derives from the Greek for ‘study of mind’) is actively involved in the ‘translational research’ task of developing digital tools to allow clinicians to make easy and accurate diagnoses of ADHD. The technology will be made available free of charge, with Noologica offering commercial consultancy and training services to support its use. Future projects involve research into the applicability of the method to other mental health conditions. With mental health issues being described as ‘the next pandemic’ in a post Covid-19 world, the need for fast and accurate diagnosis tools will become acute.

Established in 2000 by local environmentalist, the late Martin Conway, Tasman Environmental Trust currently manages 20 conservation projects worth $7 million across Nelson Tasman. The projects cover restoration plantings of native species, and predator control, to increase biodiversity and restore healthy riparian, coastal and inland ecosystems throughout the region. The hub also links up projects with similar aims and, at the other end of the scale, promotes collaboration among different sectors in the community. By bringing together iwi, community groups, local and central government, landowners and businesses, TET is facilitating transformational conservation outcomes on a large scale across Nelson Tasman. opportunities in the scope of fleet related CO2 emissions for Te Tauihu businesses.
A
What I have learnt from sharing experiences with other businesses, is that many of us who have begun this journey to reduce our fleet or fuel related emissions, are on a very similar path.
The climate crisis is hard to ignore, especially given the very recent and increasing number of global and local events linked to climate change, unprecedented heat waves in North America and Siberia, forest fires in North America, flooding in China, Germany and even locally the list is long.
So, what are we doing? Nelmac Kūmānu provides ecology-led environment infrastructure solutions for civic, commercial and private clients, with cornerstones in greenspaces, water, conservation and commercial contracts. We measure our CO2 footprint with EKOS, which helps us understand the source of our emissions. Ninety five percent of our emissions are related to fuel usage. So fleet is our focus.
Accepting this crisis, not only are we on a journey to substantially curb our own emissions we are also encouraging other businesses to begin the same journey. As an activator in the Businesses for Climate Action (B4CA) group, I have been leading the Fleet Management sector since B4CA began in June 2020. The group is focused on finding climate solutions, sharing common challenges and discovering new
Electric Vehicles and Tools Nelmac Kūmānu has recently adopted an ‘electric first’ approach to promote the procurement of electric vehicles and plant. Currently we have five fully electric vehicles, one plug in hybrid and a standard hybrid and are planning on extending this fleet throughout the coming year. In most cases the electric vehicles have replaced the use of a ute. Many of our staff rely
t Nelmac Kūmānu our focus is on the future and a critical aspect of the future is this small window of opportunity that we as businesses have to stop polluting our atmosphere with CO2 and other greenhouse gases.
on their vehicle as a tool of the trade, but where this is not the case, we are seeking electric alternatives. Many of our teams are also using electric tools instead of fuel driven tools. Changing Driver Behaviour Installing Smartrak GPS Vehicle Tracking in our vehicles gives us data on vehicle utilisation, over speeding, heavy breaking and idling time to help improve driver behaviour aimed at fuel reductions. Another aspect of driver behaviour is the strong connection with many drivers to their internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. So, part of changing driver behaviour is to promote the uptake of electric vehicles. Most of our staff, once they experience one of our electric or hybrid vehicles tend to enjoy them, and the interest is growing. Fuel Efficient Vehicles The majority of Nelmac Kūmānu’s fleet are utes and trucks, which is a challenge shared by many businesses due to the lack of electric and hybrid options. So, in the meantime we are upgrading our oldest fleet first to newer more fuel-efficient vehicles with improved health and safety features. In the past year this has included six new trucks, one minibus and eight utes.

rt/Work is designed for creative practitioners and artists who are looking to establish a financially viable career — to find employment or be successfully self-employed for the longterm. We commenced the programme in May, and have 108 registrations, with 70 personal development plans underway. We work with participants one on one, and our approach is tailored to the individual needs of each participant, supported by workshops run through the Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce. Participants have access to the programme for up to nine months as they work through their Personal Development Plan, regularly reviewing progress and refining actions to ensure they are on track to achieve their creative goals. While each participant has different needs, we are discovering that there are some common skill gaps such as business planning, financial management, funding and grant applications, marketing, and the effective use of social media. We have also connected participants together who are acting as a support network to each other to achieve their goals. Art/Work is all about building individual confidence and providing creatives with the right skills to be successful in their chosen field. Note: Due to an overwhelmingly positive response to the programme, we are not taking any further applicants at this time.

“The Kiwi ‘she’ll be right’ attitude won’t cut the mustard anymore when it comes to cyber security,” says CERT NZ Director Rob Pope. “Your personal information is highly valuable to attackers regardless of who you are, so it’s important that more Kiwis get serious about protecting themselves online. “Steps like using a password manager, two-factor authentication, updating devices and checking privacy settings are the basics to building your cyber defence.” Research by CERT NZ found 87% of New Zealanders agree safety and security of their personal information online is something that’s really important to them, however 40% expressed that taking the necessary precautions to safeguard their online personal information is inconvenient. Almost a third (32%) of Kiwis don’t frequently check the privacy settings on their social media accounts. Roughly the same amount (30%) don’t use two-factor
authentication (2FA) when logging into an online account. This is a code sent to your phone or an authentication app to verify your identity in addition to using a password and adds another layer of security to your logins. Use a Password Manager Using strong and unique passwords for each online account is so important. The easiest way to keep track of them all is with a password manager. It’s like an online safe that stores and manages your passwords. You’ll only have to remember the one master password for your password manager, and it’ll do the rest. Two-factor authentication Turning on two-factor authentication (2FA) is an easy way to add another layer of security to your logins and accounts. It’s a simple extra step after you log in, such as entering a code from an app. You can enable 2FA on most of your online accounts, and your devices. You’ll usually find the option to turn it on in the privacy settings. Update your devices When you’re alerted to a software update for your device, don’t ignore it - install it as soon as possible. Updates not only add new features, they fix bugs and vulnerabilities attackers can use to gain
access to your information.Set updates to happen automatically whenever a new version is available. Then you don’t have to think about it! Check your privacy To maintain your privacy online, it’s important to know and control who can see your stuff. Attackers could use your information to access your data or steal your identity. Lock down your accounts – starting with social media. Check that requests for personal information are legitimate before you give any details. If you’re not sure, don’t provide the information. Want to know more? Get in touch with one of the BlueBerryIT team today and make sure you subscribe to CERT NZ’s updates. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram. and LinkedIn.

A
world-leading clinician who cofounded the Pain Treatment Center at Boston Children’s Hospital will be the keynote speaker at the 78th annual Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture in October. Dr Charles Berde — Senior Associate in Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School — will present via video link from the United States, and join a live discussion with Cawthron scientists Dr Johan Svenson and Andy Selwood at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts on 19 October. The event will be simultaneously live-streamed to a global audience. Dr Berde’s presentation, Revolutionising post-operative pain relief, will examine several recent advances in care of patients after surgery, including innovations that he and his Boston Children’s Hospital/ Harvard colleague Dr Daniel Kohane are spearheading, aided by a crucial key to the puzzle that has been provided by Cawthron’s work with microalgae and bioactives.
This is a growing area of focus for Cawthron which has the potential to provide solutions to a range of industries, from pharmaceuticals to food production. Cawthron’s analytical chemists are global experts in identifying these bioactive compounds, understanding how they work, figuring out how to produce them in a laboratory and on a large commercial scale, and developing methods to modify them so they are pure, reliable, efficient and safe. Cawthron is inviting people to register for the livestream event. Limited tickets may become available for the live event, depending on Covid-19 restrictions. ompanies spend trillions every year trying to get their share of it. New Zealand’s most successful businesses invested billions last year to claim their piece. What is this highly desired resource? Forget about Auckland housing, this sought-after resource is the real estate of the mind. It is this ‘share of brain’ that companies are spending fortunes to secure, and every Kiwi business owner needs to know how to claim theirs to be successful. Every great piece of good advertising is an attempt to plant an idea in your mind. But more importantly that idea needs to stay and grow into a permanent resident. One that becomes an old friend. One that you turn to whenever you need their help to solve a problem. Think about Google. Before they started in 1998 none of us knew what a Google was. One day you heard about them. The idea was planted. Now you turn to Google most days like an old friend, to solve any problem. They own that piece of your mind that needs to know answers.
How do you increase your ‘share of brain’? For this to be successful you need a marketing vision. Because increasing your ‘share of brain’ doesn’t happen overnight. It takes planning. Step out of your business for a few minutes. Think about the next three years and how much can you increase your share of brain. What if every potential customer in your geographic area knew your name? How many people would that be? What needs to change to reach this bigger group? What’s your big idea? Everyone knowing your name is not enough you need to attach a positive reason to choose you. You need articulate this positive reason with clarity. What do you want to stand for in the minds of customers? What problem do you solve for your customers? Put it into one sentence or a few words.
the customers’ minds? The number of times that a customer needs to connect with your message before they act has jumped up in recent years. Every industry is different but one thing is for sure, that number is more than once. This is what branding is all about – owning an idea in someone’s mind. A brand is a brain tattoo. Something that won’t come off in the wash of the digital deluge that we call life. It takes continual energy to own an idea. Lots of others are trying to jump in front of you and push you out of the way. That is why most people find it hard to create content, communication and real connection. We Kiwis are sometimes too polite. But if you want to succeed in the digital world keep connecting, creating and communicating. Make it your goal to increase your ‘share of brain’ and the rewards will follow.
Wash and repeat How much are you prepared to invest in cementing your name and big idea into
What piece of mental real estate do you want your brand to own? Imagine if every potential customer in your area knew your brand name and the problem you can solve for them. Because once they know this then you are only one Google search away. They wouldn’t need to do a generic search where all your competitors are presented too. They would Google your name and then within seconds be on a direct path to your door. What would that be worth to you? To Google it’s worth trillions.

This is NBS. This is banking for life. I’ve been doing my personal and business banking with NBS for about four years now. They’re easy to deal with, really friendly, and very quick. They look at the whole picture and tailor solutions to suit your needs. We weren’t happy with our original bank and knew we needed to change to be able to grow the business. My accountant suggested we look at NBS. With the old bank, it was just hard work. They were a big corporate. I’ve been running Tasman Bay Plumbing for 15 years now and we have about 25 staff. It’s important to bank with people who understand your business. We have bills that need to be paid and sometimes we’re still waiting to get paid. NBS can help us out with cashflow and make it happen very easily. If I need anything, I just call my personal banker. It’s much easier than going through a call centre dealing with someone who doesn’t know you. The thing with NBS is that they’re local. They offer good old-fashioned service. There’s no paperwork going out of town and up the food chain. Everything gets dealt with straight away. They take the stress out of day-to-day business. Chris Inglis - Tasman Bay Plumbing

ast month the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a ‘code red’ for humanity. We have been presented with a reality check for what has happened in the past, where we are currently headed and what can be done to prepare for the future. The IPCC’s 200+ authors aggregated the latest climate findings into the clearest and most comprehensive summary yet of the physical science of climate change. Widespread, rapid and intensifying The findings unequivocally show human influence has warmed the planet at a rate that is unprecedented in at least the last 2000 years. The changes we have already experienced will only increase with further warming. Our future will see an environment with more widespread, rapid and intense heat, heavy rainfall, drought and fire. Our oceans will continue to warm and acidify. Every region on Earth will be affected. While some of the changes will be irreversible for millennia, some can be slowed and some even reversed through strong, rapid and sustained reductions in
greenhouse gas emissions. Immediate, rapid and largescale reductions Businesses for Climate Action’s ambition is to create a resilient sustainable economy, adaptable to both the opportunities and disruptions of climate change. The best part is we can all be part of the solution; individuals, businesses, communities and governments. We already have the knowledge and tools to take immediate, rapid and largescale action to reduce emissions. By supporting the transition to clean energy, transportation, and food, we can choose to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions to net zero and shape a better future together. Businesses for Climate Action has been specifically brought together to support businesses throughout Te Tauihu - like yours - to reduce carbon emissions. The journey often starts with measuring, reducing and off-setting emissions. Beyond contributing toward zero carbon, this process usually has other positive economic benefits for the business,
including cost reduction, efficiency improvements, staff engagement and customer recognition. Businesses for Climate Action also has activator groups to enable business sectors (such as tourism, food and beverage or construction), professions (accountants or lawyers) or relevant areas of interest (such as fleet management or energy efficiency) to collaborate through talks and workshops both online and in person.
Be part of the solution Measuring your business’ carbon footprint is essential to manage and reduce the climate impact your organisation is having. As this process does not have to be onerous, there is no need to hesitate. To learn more about the tools available or to join an activator group, click here.
Partner with NMIT While the benefits to recipients are obvious, businesses also benefit from investing in scholarships. Offering a scholarship can assist an organisation with marketing, social responsibility, recruitment, and everything in between. It’s a good way to advertise a brand name while also making a real difference in students’ lives.
Each year approximately 40 NMIT students are awarded scholarships to help cover their fees and support their study at NMIT. A successful scholarship application supports a learner towards their chosen career path or employment. Without assistance from an outside source, students may have trouble paying for their study, or have to increase the amount of paid work they need to do outside their studies. Investment in students, plus strong linkages with business partners and employers, helps support the skilled workforce needed in Te Tauihu as we recover from COVID-19. Each year there’s a portfolio of NMIT scholarships available, generously funded by external sponsors, businesses and community organisations.

n our experience most New Zealand businesses are very aware of the need to ensure compliance with their health and safety obligations, but not all are aware of the need to comply with privacy laws. All businesses will collect and handle some form of personal information which is subject to New Zealand’s privacy laws and as such need to comply with New Zealand’s privacy laws. To those not familiar with our privacy laws, the extent of personal information captured is surprisingly broad. It includes personal information collected about people external to the business (e.g. customers) but also people within the business (e.g. employees). Personal information can take a number of forms and for example may include information held on files, registers, emails, written records and audio and video recordings (including your security cameras). The types of businesses captured is also very broad and includes most activities undertaken for profit. For example, most mum and dad residential property investors don’t realise that they are subject to and need to comply with privacy laws regarding tenants personal information. Privacy Officer The starting point for compliance with privacy laws is appointing a privacy officer. Every business is required by law to have an appointed privacy officer. Your privacy officer can be a person within your business (e.g. a director or senior
manager) or an external advisor (e.g. your lawyers). The role of the privacy officer is to encourage and ensure compliance with our privacy laws. In order to meet their obligations the privacy officer will need to be fully engaged with how your businesses collects, uses and disposes of personal information. If you are looking at appointing an internal privacy officer the Privacy Commissioner has extensive free resources and e-courses available on its website (www.privacy.org.nz). What’s new Late last year, the Privacy Act 2020 came into force and made a range of significant updates to New Zealand’s privacy laws. One notable change is a requirement for businesses to notify the Privacy Commissioner where a privacy breach is likely to cause serious harm. Consequently, it is now recommended that in addition to a privacy policy all businesses have a privacy breach response plan which sets out how you will respond to privacy breaches in a way that complies with New Zealand privacy laws. What’s at stake? In terms of legal consequences fines for privacy breaches generally range from around $5,000 to $50,000. However, fines for the most serious of breaches in New Zealand have be known to exceed $150,000. In addition to monetary liability, privacy breaches also have consequences for your business’ reputation. Governance Responsibilities If you have an executive or governance function within your organisation you should be asking for a regular privacy reports alongside your health and safety
reports. The privacy report should cover a range of matters including your key metrics (privacy disclosure requests, breaches and response and resolution times), details of controls, IT security systems, security audits, timetabling and financing). If you need advice or assistance with your privacy compliance program get in touch with the team at Pitt and Moore and ask for Rhys Thompson. He can be contacted on (03) 545 7899 or rhys.thompson@ pittandmoore.co.nz. Disclaimer: The information contained in this publication is of a general nature and is not intended as legal advice.
