elcome to the first Commerce Comment for 2021 and hopefully you will have noticed our new, improved presentation format. We have moved to using Issuu which not only provides better reading functionality but also means we can embed links and videos for your viewing pleasure.

Even though it is only just March, we have already had a busy start to the year with an exciting calendar of events and some new initiatives thrown in for good measure.

Entries to the 2021 Nelson Pine Business Awards will open in April and we will be holding a series of workshops for potential entrants to learn more about the process and the benefits of taking part. Watch our usual channels for more information on the awards and workshops.

Very excitingly, we have been awarded a contract by the Ministry of Social Development to provide free career support and business mentoring programme for creative people living anywhere in the Nelson Region, including Golden Bay. Art/Work is for creative practitioners and artists who are looking to establish a financially viable career - to find employment or be successfully selfemployed for the long-term. Contact me for more information.

On May 7th we will be commencing the first Intepeople Leadership Academy

of 2021, this is an eight-week programme for aspiring leaders. Each week a different “leader” from the world of business and government will provide useful insights and draw upon personal experience to help you on your road to successful leadership.

“The NTCC Leadership Academy was outstanding. The speakers provided great insight into many areas of leadership, with varied experiences and practical examples and guidance.

We also made really valuable connections with the other participants in the academy and have remained in contact, supporting each other by sharing ideas and advice.”

Finally, local authorities are once again working on their plans and budgets for the next ten years. We will be paying close attention to what is in the LTPs for both Nelson City and Tasman District in terms of impact or support of businesses and will submissions as appropriate. OneFortyOne is a trans-Tasman business that owns and operates forests and sawmills in New Zealand and Australia.

efore we became OneFortyOne, we were Nelson Forests – a business that was well known throughout the region for growing sustainable wood and manufacturing high-quality timber.

We’re still the same business, even if we have a different name and logo. During 2020 we contributed a few articles to this publication but as we start 2021 we thought it was a good time to get back to basics and share an introduction to our business and some of the things we care about. This includes ensuring our people go home safe and well every day and the role we play in supporting sustainable prosperity in our region.

But first, a bit about our operations.

In New Zealand OneFortyOne manages 80,000 hectares of FSC® certified sustainable plantation forests in Nelson Tasman and Marlborough, and Kaituna sawmill near Blenheim.

The majority of our New Zealand logs and lumber is sold domestically to support local jobs and local processing. In New Zealand, OneFortyOne employs a diverse workforce of 116 people. We value a variety of perspectives and experience, and careers in our forests and mills include marketing, engineering, harvest planning and timber processing.

In addition, we support a contractor workforce of more than 300 people, making us one of the largest employers in the region.

Our Kaituna Sawmill produces highquality timber products, including the famous Kaituna Post.

Home Safe and Well – every day Our commitment to safety is central to our business. We want all our people to go home safe and well at the end of every day. Forestry can have a reputation for being an unsafe industry, however our safety numbers today are the best they have been in three years. Despite best efforts, accidents can happen, but we are making huge shifts in our culture to make sure that our people can both look after each other and hold each other accountable.

Sustainable prosperity To us, sustainable prosperity means operating a safe, profitable business that benefits our communities and the environment.

Our business plays an important role in meeting climate change targets.

Carbon is stored in the trees we plant and grow. It stays locked within our timber products which are then used in building, furniture, and other items that we use every day.

While our forest estate is planted in Pinus radiata, what many people may not realise is that there are numerous waterways and conservation areas within our forest estate.

These areas of native bush and our

plantation forest generally provide safe homes for a surprisingly diverse range of native birds, fish, and plants. Our forests have an important role to play in preserving biodiversity.

Our forest and mill products contribute to the Te Tauihu regional economy. Not only do our operations support high-quality local jobs but our products are essential for construction and daily living.

We support our communities through providing access to our forests for recreation, by looking after conservation areas, through monitoring native flora and fauna, through a range of community grants that support people, ideas, nature, and the environment, and through education activities. If you know of a school, community organisation or project that could make good use of a grant please let us know.

Future generations are important to all of us at OneFortyOne. Just as the trees and timber we work with today are our inheritance from foresters and sawmillers of the past, we are custodians of our wood fibre resource, and the land where it grows for those who will come after us.

e love to help motivated business leaders connect with their audiences in meaningful ways. But one thing we’ve noticed over the last few years is that the location of those people is constantly changing. Here is a helicopter-view of where your audiences are spending their time and money.

With New Zealand internet access up around 93%, 6.4 million mobile phone connections and 3.64 million social media users, there has never been a better time to connect with your customers on digital platforms.

What Ad-world can teach us The 2019 NZ Advertising Industry Revenue Report released in May 2020, shows the media channels that advertisers believe Kiwis are giving their attention to, and where the changes are happening.

Advertisers spent a whopping $2.7 billion in 2019 and just over a billion of that was spent on ‘digital only’ advertising. Only $538 million was spent on TV advertising.

Spending on digital advertising continues to rise while the traditional channels of TV and print advertising are in decline.

A more interesting piece of research that came out last year was NZ On Air’s ‘Where Are The Audiences?’ Some findings are: •

Free to Air channels are still popular (one in six New Zealanders per day), but they aren’t growing. TVNZ On Demand is becoming more popular, now reaching one in five New Zealanders daily.

The most popular site, station or channel is YouTube, just beating TVNZ 1.

Most print (magazines and newspapers) are seeing declining print subscribers, but increasing interest in digital offering.

Most radio stations are experiencing declining audience numbers but more Kiwis, 44%, listen to streaming daily.

Social Media Social media continues to dominate our screens. According to 2019 research, 3.6 million Kiwis are active social media users, spending an average 1 hour and 53 minutes on social media networks every day.

Facebook continues to dominate social media in New Zealand with 73 percent of the population saying they are on the platform. Instagram has been on a growth path for the past few years. Pinterest is a strong contender. LinkedIn for business has good use in New Zealand and Twitter to a lesser extent.

News Stuff is the clear leader when it comes to our favourite digital news source.

According to Roy Morgan Research, the total digital audience for Stuff in an average 7 days is over 1.8 million New Zealanders, well ahead of main rival the nzherald.co.nz on 1.55 million.

Email Checking emails is a daily ritual for most of us; our inbox continues to be one of our most favourite places to spend time.

Google Search 93% of Kiwi internet users use Google.

It’s where most of us go to engage in the web, so it is a vital place to be noticed e.g.

SEO and Google Ads.

There are new channels to keep an eye on, like TikTok and Spotify ads, plus a proliferation of out-of-home screens and more innovation to come. Keep open to learning and change because what works today may be gone tomorrow.

So what?

Our challenge with all this is to create meaningful communication that is appropriate to the channel(s) we are engaging with. The last thing you want is to sound or look like an advertisement.

Find your happy place and get connected, so you can keep in touch with the people that matter to you.

Engineering Something Positive

M

att Kidson has a message for businesses stalling on the carbon front. “Get on with it, and the sooner the better”. Matt is Managing Director of Kernohan Engineering, a business that went carbon neutral in 2019 and climate positive in 2020. A decision that was fuelled by two main drivers.

“We feel we’ve got an obligation as a business to offset our activities because of the pressing climate problems that we’ve got and we saw this as the way of doing that and also understanding our footprint a bit better and how we can reduce it. Secondly, we want to move into the clean tech space and going climate positive gave us an ability to have a bit more credibility and understanding around those industries.”

As expected, businesses moving into the clean tech space are on the increase and green sectors like this will only continue to expand. The Covid cloud may have blotted out the horizon for a while there, but climate change priorities should be back at the forefront of our thinking now that we have settled into some semblance of an uneasy routine I like to call, Weknow-you’re-still-out-there. The fact is, our changing climate is not going to sort itself out and the longer businesses leave it before they do something, the greater the impact this delay will have on their natural good looks and charm. The planet’s natural good looks won’t fare any better.

leaders in their field – or are deciding to make serious changes because they realise it’s the right thing to do - need to start prioritising their carbon zero targets now. The Government’s commitment to a nationwide carbon-neutral status may seem like a lifetime away but put it in your 2050 diary today – it’s not going away and if you are succession planning, it’ll be easier if you’ve got your brownie badge for sustainability. Nelson Tasman has the chance to be an early adopter and a region that others look to emulate, but this will require effort from everyone.

Matt expects the Government will start putting increasing pressure on businesses to get people on board. The good news if you are action-orientated, measuring your carbon emissions doesn’t deserve to be filed into the ‘Too Hard’ basket.

“I thought it was going to be more expensive but it was pretty easy to do.

Freight is quite difficult to calculate but we have an admin person who keeps a record and pulls things out of Xero and that’s not too onerous.” Once Kernohan had gone carbon neutral, he did the maths and realised taking the extra step to climate positive wasn’t going to cost that much more.

There are a number of accredited organisations that can measure carbon footprints (Kernohan used local business, Ekos), ultimately all of them can provide you with an opportunity to improve

efficiencies and reduce costs.

Kernohan Engineering’s move to climate positive triggered interest from an affiliated organisation, Heavy Engineering Research Association, who has been inspired enough to start off on their own carbon-auditing journey. And that’s how this will work. Someone will show you that it’s possible and you’ll do the same for someone else. Or even better, you won’t wait to be shown but get on and lead the way.

“You get this whole cascading effect.

It’s a bit like being the first person up to dance. Everyone feels its ok and they go and do it...Part of it is finding who the businesses are that are more future focussed and wanting to do the right thing. Network with those organisations and then you’re starting to create a bit of an ecosystem. So, part of that carbon certification is plugging into the ecosystem of change and responsibility.”

Being a catalyst for positive change rarely makes it into a company’s core values, but now that we’re all living together in the pointy end of the 21st century, everyday heroism may be as simple as doing what’s right, right now.

And if you’re not the hero, how easy is it to be the villain of the story? Matt has an idea.

“I think there is enough evidence and enough concern around climate change that ‘business as usual’ is almost a criminal act.”

In Te Tauihu (the top of the south), local businesses are taking the lead in creating a zero carbon Aotearoa within a resilient sustainable economy, adaptable to both the opportunities and disruptions of climate change.

Together, we can transform our business community to create lasting, positive impact.

More than 100 years ago, a retired Nelson businessman and philanthropist Thomas Cawthron made a will that would have a lasting impact on New Zealand science from the early 1920s to today.

T

his year, Cawthron Institute celebrates 100 years of delivering worldclass science following its official establishment in April 1921 with a bequest from Thomas Cawthron, who had a vision to deliver practical and independent scientific research for the benefit of Te Tahuihu and New Zealand.

Fast forward to 2021, we are now New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation with 300 staff from 35 countries, working across multiple sites in Nelson, and Thomas Cawthron’s vision continues to be the ethos that drives our research programmes today.

For the past 100 years our scientists have been able to identify emerging areas of research to assist industry, and New Zealand, to become sustainable and successful. We see ourselves as a bridge

between science and industry, connecting R&D to commercial application.

In the early years Cawthron scientists applied their expertise to agricultural research, then as timber exports took off, they progressed to forestry research. They then moved into supporting the pipfruit and hop growing industries. Today our science is strongly focused on protecting marine and freshwater environments and assisting New Zealand’s economy through the sustainable development of the dairy, seafood and aquaculture sectors, as well as supporting the development of novel foods, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals.

In addition, Cawthron has more than 30 years of expertise in algae research, and we are one of few organisations worldwide to specialise in extracting high-value bioactive compounds from microalgae which could be used in food or pharmaceutical products. Meanwhile our macroalgae research exploring the value of different seaweed species could significantly contribute to achieving

the government’s target of aquaculture becoming a $3bn industry by 2035.

And it’s not only New Zealanders benefitting from Cawthron’s science – globally its impact is being realised too.

For example, a method developed by Cawthron scientists to detect toxins in seafood has been internationally validated and is helping to set a world standard for the global seafood industry.

As we celebrate our rich history this year, we are also looking ahead to the next 100 years of science, innovation and problem solving. We have recently made the exciting appointment of Volker Kuntzsch as Cawthron’s new Chief Executive and we are making significant investment into new research infrastructure in Te Tau Ihu, including the National Algae Research Centre due to open in May, and upgraded laboratories.

As part of our centenary year, there will be many opportunities for the community to join with us in celebrating 100 years of science, from our annual activities such as the Scitec Expo for primary and secondary schools, through to our Thomas Cawthron Memorial Lecture which is a free event for the public.

We’ll be opening Cawthron’s doors to the public as part of our Open Day in April, as well as working closely with the Nelson Provincial Museum on a special Cawthon exhibition later this year.

This is an extraordinary year for Cawthron and we’re committed to making our science accessible to everyone.

Using Conditional Access, you can control which devices reach your Office apps and services data, and allow or deny access depending on when the user is logging in, their location while attempting to access it, what applications they are using, and if it is outside of normal working hours.

Parameters like these can automatically eliminate thousands of threats.

Compulsory Employer Accreditation Is Coming In 2018-2019, the Government consulted on key proposals which will significantly impact New Zealand businesses who employ or might employ migrant workers, as well as on migrant workers. Those proposals have now been finalised, and are likely to be implemented later this year (following a COVID-related delay).

ork visas applications will be via a new employer-led framework which will consist of three gateways:

Gate 1: The Employer Check (Accreditation) Gate 2: The Job Check (Labour Market Test) Gate 3: The Migrant Check

Under this framework, the onus of providing information at the initial stage shifts from the migrant worker to the New Zealand employer. Employers will need to follow a process of submitting an application to Immigration New Zealand with a range of prescribed supporting evidence about their business and paying an applicable fee.

The following six temporary work visa categories will be scrapped and replaced with one type of visa under the new framework: • • • • • •

Essential Skills including the Essential Skills in Demand Lists Work to Residence – Long term Skill Shortage List occupation Approval-in-Principle Talent (Accredited Employer) Silver Fern (Practical Experience) Silver Fern (Job Search)

The new framework would require employers to hold ‘Employer

Accreditation’ status with Immigration New Zealand before a visa could be approved for a migrant worker. This requirement is likely to include employers with existing employees on a work visa that require a visa extension.

The actual mechanics of accreditation are not yet clear. However it is reasonable to assume that to hold accreditation employers will have to demonstrate they are compliant with immigration and employment law, are sustainable, and have appropriate policies and workplace practices.

There will have to be some sort of application process for employers to become accredited, and once the framework is introduced only accredited employers will be able to support migrants for work visas. A significant hurdle is that at present the Government is proposing to have the new framework come into place on one day, without any kind of preparation or lead in process. This means all 53,000 New Zealand employers who employ migrants are going to need accreditation for any future work visas from that time. The administrative burden on Immigration New Zealand of the immediate introduction appears not to have been a consideration.

To put themselves in a good position and at the front of the queue for accreditation it would be prudent for New Zealand businesses, who already employ migrant workers or intend to in the near future, to plan for this major change, review their processes and practices to ensure that they would be able to meet Immigration New Zealand’s requirements for accreditation.

In fact it would be prudent for all New Zealand businesses to make themselves ‘accreditation’ ready given they may need to employ migrants in the future even if that need is not there now. All New Zealand businesses should carefully consider whether they: • • • •

meet all immigration and employment law standards have the requisite workplace policies and processes in place understand the consequences of being placed on the MBIE’s stand down list want to offer a pathway to residence for prospective migrant workers.

Once the compulsory employer accreditation comes into effect we anticipate that there are likely to be processing waiting periods which could have a detrimental impact on your business. As a result, we recommend that employers don’t leave applying for accreditation to the last minute.

Q & A with Alfredo Puche What is The Alternative Board?

The Alternative Board is a membership organisation of business owners, CEOs and directors who spend time working on their business by attending monthly board meetings and one-on-one coaching sessions. At these meetings, the members will discuss issues and opportunities that they face within their company in a relaxed and confidential atmosphere.

The Alternative Board has hundreds of board meetings in 21 countries and has been present in almost all regions of New Zealand since 2012.

What are the benefits of joining The Alternative Board?

When members present a challenge, issue or opportunity to the board, the other members will offer practical solutions and advice. Members in each board collectively have hundreds of years of business experience. 80% of problems and challenges are the same for all businesses, regardless of the type of business. The diversity of the backgrounds of the members provides an array of ideas that can be applied, acting as a sounding board for analysis that also brings accountability.

How do you choose your members for the boards?

The potential members have to be forward-thinking and wanting to improve their businesses and lives. They need to be willing to help other board members and open to accept advice and ideas from others.

The existing board members need to accept the new member. It is key that the new member is not a competitor, a major supplier, or customer of any of the existing members.

In choosing the right board for the new member, I consider several factors such as the company’s annual turnover, number of employees, as well as the type and complexity of their business.

Basically any topic, both strategic or operational that a business owner needs to manage. Some examples are: • • • • • • • •

Cash flow/financial issues Marketing and sales challenges Staff issues Leadership Changes in markets, economies and technologies Balancing personal and business life Succession and retirement planning Family business and partner issues

How do you keep your members accountable?

The main point of accountability is the board. Every member has to commit to certain actions to the other board members and has to report to them. In the one-on-one coaching sessions, we work on 90 day goals, yearly plans, and long-term strategic plans which we review each session.

If you had one piece of advice to a business owner, what would it be?

Work on the business, not only in the business. Create a written vision and share it with your team. Create a plan all together to achieve it. Execute it keeping everyone accountable.

How do you think local businesses are doing in the current situation?

There is a lot to talk about here. At The Alternative Board, we do a regular Pulse Check Survey to monitor how businesses are managing during Covid-19, their

views on current challenges, what support they need, their confidence, and the opportunities ahead.

The health and viability of our SMEs and the business owners within it is at the heart of all we do, which is why we feel the regular Pulse Check is critical.

The results are shared with the Government and media and publicly shared. I will upload the next results for example on my LinkedIn profile.

As someone who has had several businesses, what would you do differently now?

Look for help. In almost all the board meetings with our members, I have the same thought: I wish I would have known about The Alternative Board when I had my first business. The shared knowledge from all the different members is incredibly valuable.

Don’t try to do everything yourself. I used to work long hours in the business, but it was mostly firefighting. I should have worked more on the business, defining the strategy, planning it properly and executing it.

Being a leader and promoting the right values in the business is also important, including setting clear expectations, goals and keeping all employees accountable.

YOUNG ENTERPRISE SCHEME — PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Pathways to Success

T

his is a story of a project that ended up a decisive yes, despite starting as a definite no. Last year’s regional winners of the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), Pathways to Primary, had a great idea, grant funding and plenty of enthusiasm. The Pathways team, you could say, were on the right pathway.

Unfortunately, their initial business venture involved holding an event where large numbers of people would congregate - not as ‘on trend’ in 2020 compared to the previous few million years of human existence.

Lockdown, and a need to abandon the event cost the team time and motivation, the brilliance of a second great (tech) idea was also reluctantly let go due to time constraints. The highs and lows they all felt through those early months the students now see as good experience.

Year 13 CEO Bree Anderson explains, “It sounds very cliché but our never giving up mind sets was something we learnt and can take away with us. It really has built determination into all of us and proves why

it is important to keep pushing through even in tough times.”

Luckily the team’s third idea turned out to be the charm. The Pathways to Primary card game is similar to Top Trumps. Players compare categories such as pay levels and training involved with the ultimate purpose of the card game to raise awareness of horticultural career opportunities amongst college students still deciding their futures.

Says Bree, “We worked alongside Go Hort[iculture] and they said they don’t know what works, or what it’s like anymore [to create something that appeals to students] so that’s what was different for us. We’d been through the education system recently so we know what kids like and what they don’t.“ The YES programme requires the teams to not just come up with a business idea but to promote and sell their product, and crucially, pitch the concept to judges. The team have since sold over 500 packs of their cards around the country, as well as the rights to the game itself.

“We didn’t have an idea at the start of the year but I guess that was the whole point of it. To make you grow as a person and learn to work as a team. It gives you real life experience. It is totally different to NCEA and prepares you to what life could be like out of school. “ Their mentor, Robyn Patterson from Go Horticulture, was so impressed with the team’s business that her organisation became an initial sponsor and then bought the rights to the card game.

“They identified a real need for an interactive horticulture career tool, and created such a good product, in demand by schools.”

She says working with the Pathway to Primary YES students was the highlight of her year.

In addition to winning the regionals, the team has also won a national excellence award. There were fourteen excellence award categories and the Pathways to Primary team was one out of 514 teams in the country to enter. They won the National Te Arahanga Primary Industries Award. MPI felt this team ticked all the boxes and saw that this card game had a positive impact on young people, introducing students to roles they had not considered before that would hopefully lead them onto a rewarding career. Any way you look at it, that’s pretty good going for your third shot at a business idea.

The Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce organises YES for Te Tauihu, seeing mentoring entrepreneurs of the future as all part and parcel of the responsibility for an organisation like NTCC. The programme’s success is also heavily reliant on the support of local business people who provide wise counsel and support for the students as they develop their fledgling companies into, in this case, award winners.
