2025 Browning Memorial Recipient COLSON HICKS The 2025 Browning Memorial Award Recipient is Colson Hicks from North Platte. Colson is 6 years old and is the son of Cody and Taylor Hicks and grandson of Jason Hicks, who is a member of the Palisade Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

Colson was born Dec. 6, 2019.

Colson was diagnosed with Sturge-Weber syndrome and Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

Sturge-Weber is a rare, neurological disorder present at birth, characterized by a port-wine stain birthmark on the forehead and upper eyelid on one side of the face. The birthmark can vary in color from light pink to deep purple and is caused by an overabundance of capillaries (small blood vessels) around the trigeminal nerve just beneath the

surface of the face. Sturge-Weber syndrome is also accompanied by abnormal blood vessels on the brain’s surface and the loss of tissue (atrophy) with deposits of calcium (calcification) in the cerebral cortex of the brain on the same side as the birthmark. Sturge-Weber syndrome rarely affects other body organs.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome, also called KTS, is a rare disorder found at birth (congenital) involving problems in the development of certain blood vessels, soft tissues (such as skin and muscles), bones and sometimes the lymphatic system. The main features include a red birthmark, atypical vein or lymphatic development (malformations), and overgrowth of tissues and bones.

Colson began to experience seizures almost immediately after birth and continues with them

Four injured in Omaha fire Three children and an adult were taken to an Omaha hospital early Wednesday after a two-alarm fire broke out at the Onyx at Aksarben apartment complex.

The children and the adult were taken to the Creighton University Medical Center- Bergan Mercy, according to Battalion Chief Coby Werner of the Omaha Fire Department. The adult and one of the children were transported in critical condition.

Two of the children were later transferred to CHI Health St. Elizabeth hospital in Lincoln, Werner said. CHI Health St. Elizabeth is known for its burn

trauma unit.

One adult and one child were treated at the scene, but they declined transport to a hospital.

Four other children were evaluated at the scene but required no treatment, Werner said.

Firefighters were called to the apartments near 74th and Cedar Streets about 2:35 a.m. and immediately requested additional resources. All residents of the 30-unit building were evacuated, including an infant on the first floor, Werner said.

today. Colson is seen regularly at Children’s Hospital for treatment of seizures and testing to monitor the progression of the disease. A few obstacles that Colson has been faced with in just four short years: So far Colson has had two surgeries, a few laser treatments, a week-long EEG, and several MRIs to monitor bleeding and calcifications on his brain. Colson has been flown to Children’s Hospital in Omaha multiple times for extensive seizure activity. After a year of no seizure activity, Colson began having seizures again in February 2024. He still continues to follow up regularly with Neurology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and ENT/Audiology. A case study has been opened in hopes of helping future families navigate through diagnoses like Colson’s. He continues to meet with his multidisciplinary team that consists of Occupational therapy, Physical therapy, Speech, and Resource.

Colson is starting second year Pre-K in fall of 2024. Colson is the happiest, funniest, most wild little boy despite the circumstances. Colson never lets anything stop him and is always determined to figure things out one way or another!

Colson will be recognized at the 2025 Nebraska State Fire School in Grand Island on May 16, 2025 during the Opening Ceremony.

The special Recognition Committee would like to make this a special day for Colson.

Garage lost in Ogallala fire A Sunday evening fire completely destroyed a detached garage in the 400 block of West Second Street.

Ogallala Fire Chief Dell Simmerman said when firefighters arrived, the fire had already selfventilated through the roof and the west wall. The fire chief said about one-third of the building was in flames when firefighters arrived.

The building did contain a woodburning stove, but Simmerman said the stove is not believed to have caused the fire. Rather, a short from an electrical cord to an appliance is believed to be the most likely cause of the fire.

The detached garage, which was used as a workshop, is located between two homes and both were occupied at the time of the fire.

Simmerman said both houses were evacuated during the incident. One of the homes, the one located to the west, sustained heat damage to its siding on the east side. The home to the west did not sustain any significant damage. There was no structural damage to either of the homes, Simmerman said.

Between 25 to 30 firefighters from the Ogallala, KeystoneLemoyne, Paxton and Brule Fire departments responded to the call, Simmerman said. Nine firefighting units were on scene to combat the blaze.

Three Keith County EMS vehicles were also on scene, as well as the Ogallala Police Department and Nebraska State Patrol.

There were no injuries as the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Damage was estimated between $30,000 and $40,000 for the approximately 15-by-30 structure.

That damage estimate did not include the contents of the building and the many tools collected over a lifetime in the workshop.

Simmerman said no smoke alarms were sounding when firefighters arrived and he did not immediately know if the building had smoke alarms.

As the area moves to colder weather and residents need to heat their spaces, they are reminded to inspect their appliances and space heaters.

The fire chief recommended: • Using working smoke detectors.

• Having fireplace chimneys swept.

• Not overloading outlets.

• Keeping flammable objects away from electrical outlets and cords.

• Unplugging small devices and appliances when they are not in use.

• Retiring old appliances.

• Limiting the use of space heaters.

• Visually inspecting electrical cords. Simmerman said residents should not put cords under rugs or use cords that have been kinked or bent. He also recommended to not use splice damaged or severed cords. And, to use extension cords of the correct gauge so those extension cords do not overheat while in use.

Home fires occur more in winter than in any other season. As you stay cozy and warm this winter, be fire-smart!

Hastings House Fire Hastings Fire & Rescue responded to a structure fire Thursday evening in a house at 205 E. Fourth St. In a news release, the city of Hastings said firefighters were dispatched at 7:31 p.m., and the fire was under control around 8:30 p.m.

Occupants were evacuated.

The house was under construction, which hindered firefighting efforts. All utilities had been disconnected prior to the incident.

Hastings Rural Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid.

The Hastings Police Department, Hastings Utilities and the city Street Department also responded to the incident.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Training Division Part-time instructor Spotlight The month’s part-time instructor Spotlight from the State Fire Marshal’s Training Division is John Morford from the Chadron Volunteer Fire Department. John has been a member of the Chadron VFD since 1994 where he has served in many capacities including firefighter/EMT, training officer, captain, assistant chief and president. Morford began working for the Training Division in 2013 in the West Region with Allen Michel. As a lifelong learner Morford attends training as often as possible and being in a smaller community requires him to have knowledge in a variety of skills.

Morford was nominated by the Chadron VFD and received the NSVFA Firemanship Award during opening ceremonies at the annual fire school. Unknown to Morford, his family had traveled to Grand Island to attend

the award ceremony which was a complete surprise and made the award and presentation a forever memory.

In addition to working with Chadron and helping with work from the Training Division, John likes to hike, going mountain biking, camp and anything that involves a lake. He has a twoyear-old grand-daughter that lives in the Omaha area which requires them to travel to see her but they find themselves taking several trips a year to be a part of her life.

When asked to share what you find most satisfying while working for the Training Division, Morford shared the following; “when asked to assist with fire school I really wanted to be involved in some sort of technical training such as SCBA or ropes classes. Instead, I was drawn in

Intro to Firefighting class and have never looked back. It’s a lot of work trying to get 250 students through all the scenarios and stations but seeing the transformation of those new students into a person that walks away with some basic knowledge that they can then build on is very rewarding. I think our job as trainers / instructors is to be successful at “planting the seed”; if we can do that, then those new firefighters will become the next generation of highly skilled professionals”.

When asked to share an experience in teaching for the Training Division when he felt like he had made a difference to an individual firefighter’s life Morford’s response became very personal, “one person in-particular though that stands out is the influence I had on my daughter. She spent most of her life growing up and

She began her career while still in high school by becoming a member of the Chadron department, then later continuing her education by working toward her Fire Science degree at Casper Community College. After graduating college, she has spent the last 10 years as a firefighter with a variety of agencies in Wyoming, Washington, California

and South Dakota. It’s nice to have her closer to home as she is currently working for the Black Hills National Forest out of Hill City, SD. I don’t think there is any one moment or action that I did to encourage her career path, other than being a good example and leading through action”.

The Training Division would like to thank John for his great work and effort in supporting the fire service of Nebraska.

Potter Volunteer Fire Department Receives $5,000 Grant towards essential equipment replacement The Sidney and Greater Area (SAGA) Fund is proud to announce a $5,000 grant awarded to the Potter Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department (PVFD) to help replace a vital air compressor used in the safety equipment of the department’s firefighters. The compressor, originally manufactured in 1942, plays a critical role in filling air tanks for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), which provides clean air to firefighters during emergency response in hazardous environments.

The Potter Volunteer Fire Department, which has been serving Potter and surrounding areas since 1918 as Potter Fire Protection District #4, responds to over 150 calls each year, spanning more

than 200 miles in the Western Nebraska Panhandle. This equipment upgrade is essential to ensuring the safety of their 35-member, all-volunteer force, which includes 28 firefighters and 7 EMTs, many of whom serve in both roles.

The fire department has already raised $10,000 through local fundraising efforts to meet the total cost of $39,168.94 for the new compressor. SAGA’s $5,000 grant will help bridge the gap as the department continues its fundraising initiatives.

PVFD is a vital resource in the region, providing fire, rescue, and emergency medical services. As a member of the Tri-State Mutual Aid Association, which includes 14 departments, the PVFD plays

Register Now for the 2025 NVFC Training Summit Travel stipends available The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is excited to announce that registration is now open for the 2025 NVFC Training Summit taking place June 20-21 in Salt Lake City, UT. This signature conference provides an opportunity for firefighters and EMS providers to participate in valuable classroom training, idea sharing, and networking. Three learning tracks will focus on responder health and safety, volunteer recruitment and retention,

and emergency service leadership.

The Summit includes two days of classroom-based breakout sessions with nationally-known instructors, keynote speakers, general sessions, networking events, and a vendor expo. The agenda features a selection of 18 courses relating to critical topics impacting the volunteer emergency services, with a focus on physical and behavioral health, working within NFPA standards, onboarding new volunteer responders, best practices for retaining volunteers, and leadership.

While the Training Summit

is a great value, the NVFC recognizes that cost can be a challenge. To remove this barrier and help offset the costs, stipends are available that reimburse up to $800 of conference-related expenses, including hotel, airfare/ mile-age/transportation, and the event registration fee. Merrick County crews respond to accident One-vehicle accident took place about 6 a.m. on Ormsby Road A 23-year-old Palmer woman lost her life in a one-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in rural Merrick County.

Hailee A. Vlach succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash took place at about 6

a.m. on Ormsby Road near Seventh Road.

Vlach was the passenger in a 1998 Chevrolet pickup driven by Dylan D. Dugger, 32, of Palmer.

A preliminary investigation performed by the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office found that the pickup was heading west on Ormsby Road. The truck crossed the center of the roadway, crossed the eastbound lane and entered the south ditch, continuing westbound, and collided

NSVFA Officer OFficer Reports Just want to start off by hoping you all had a great holiday season with friends and family. We traveled to Grand Island last month and had a great meeting with the E board and with the Fire School committee. There are a lot of changes going on at Fonner Park with the hotel and casino and they will have a new staff at the HEC center this year, but it looks to be a smooth transition from one staff to the other. We will have more on that as we get closer to fire school so, please keep checking in with the Nebraska Firefighter as it will keep you updated. There are some new classes this year so keep an eye out for that when you register.

I was hoping to have some news out of the safer grant committee this month but apparently, we have some email issues that we will get worked out to keep

you all updated on what is happening with them and making sure you are all getting the information that you need. The committee is looking at the next safer grant to apply for so keep your fingers crossed that we would get it. After graduating high school, she enrolled in the Fire Science program at Casper Community College in Casper, WY. Why am I writing about Mia? I am not necessarily writing about Mia as much as I am writing about our ability to impact someone positively.

By the time you read this, I will have done one of the hardest things a person, let alone a Fire Chief, has done: I delivered a eulogy for a hard-charging young woman named Mia Shea Reynolds. Shortly after I was appointed as the Fire Chief for my hometown of Alliance, I was introduced to Mia and her family. She was a vibrant three-year-old full of energy.

Fast-forward some 14 years, and that same vibrant Mia comes to me and says, “I would like to shadow the fire department and learn what you do.” Can I? This was between her junior and senior years of high school. Absolutely, you can, but there are some logistical things we need to do first. We got through those, and Mia became a fixture in the firehouse that summer. She was a sponge! So much so that we

This ripple effect is a powerful force for good, showing that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a significant impact.

This is genuinely what the members of the Alliance Fire Department did for Mia. I knew we had impacted her, and it was clear from her choice to pursue our profession after graduating high school, but I did not know how much of an impact we made until we lost her at the youthful age of twenty. We never know entirely our impact on someone until it is too late. When I received a text from Mia’s mom asking if I thought it was possible to hold Mia’s celebration of life at our fire station, that is when I learned about our impact on this young woman. I answered we could do anything for her at the fire station; I see no reason why we could not.

Her mom replied, “Well, that is where she was comfortable, where she felt the most welcomed, and where she would have wanted it.”

That is when I understood the profound impact the members of the Alliance Fire Department had on Mia. My eyes immediately filled with tears, and I am not ashamed to admit that. I have always been proud of my department’s members, and learning of their impact on Mia is just another reason I am proud of each one of them. Their dedication and kindness have made a significant difference, and I am honored to be part of this team.

Ultimately, making a positive impact means recognizing our ability to effect change and in-

spire others, no matter how small.

It means embracing the belief that our actions can contribute to a more compassionate and equitable world, no matter how trivial they seem. By committing to these principles, we can inspire others and create a legacy of positivity that extends far beyond our immediate surroundings. This is what the members of the Alliance Fire Department did for Mia Shea Reynolds.

Remember this: you are making an impact on someone’s life, whether you know it or not; just make it a positive impact.

NSVFA Officer OFficer Reports Volunteer Emergency Responders Incentive Act – Revisited As part of legislation passed in 2016, then Senator Al Davis and a host of other senators introduced the Volunteer Emergency Responders Incentive Act in an effort to promote the recruitment of volunteer first responders and retain them. The legislation had been introduced in years past, but several factors pointed to the necessity of providing a state income tax credit for volunteers.

Wildland fires were burning more frequently and with greater intensity, generally at that time, in the north central region of the state and in the panhandle.

Volunteer EMS units were facing a greater increase in calls, while continuing to suffer from a dwindling number of volunteers responding to the calls. Finally, many volunteer first responders were aging out, leaving the departments with which they had been members for 20-30 years, creating a bigger hit on departments in Nebraska.

As a result, the Incentive Act provided a means in which active volunteer first responders would receive an income tax credit of $250 on their State of Nebraska income tax returns, provided first responders met the criteria for two years.

Historically, in each year since enactment, approximately 2,200 volunteer first responders have qualified, resulting in a total annual tax credit of approximately $550,000.

For the 2025 session, the Board of Directors of the NSVFA have requested that the Legislature consider a bill to increase the amount of the credit to $1,000 each year and move the two years in order to qualify to one year.

Given the continuous increase demanded of Nebraska’s volunteer first responders over the past few years, it is hopeful that the Legislature will recognize a need to elevate the tax credit amount.

Wildland fires have vastly increased in the geographical regions of Nebraska since the original passage of the Act. Fires have occurred more frequently in

other parts of the state, not just the north central region and the panhandle area. At the Road 702 and Road 739 fires, portions of southwest Nebraska took the lives of cattle and burned thousands of acres. Those fires spread for days burning out of control until the volunteers could get them under control. Homes were burned, barns were burned, and cattle were killed. Also in 2022, wildland fires struck the southeast portion of the state, severely injuring volunteer first responders in their efforts to combat the fire.

In 2023, the Lowry Fire in Garfield County burned 6,000 acres just north of Burwell. Injuries were reported and structures were destroyed. Local aviators dropped water on the fires, in an attempt to help the volunteers on the ground. Wildland fires grew so severely that in April of 2023, Governor Pillen issued a statewide suspension of all open burning, removing the authority vested in law to local fire chiefs, in an effort to stem the tide in all portions of the state. Recall that in March of 2023, on a very

Testifying was quite an experience and I was asked by one of the members of the OSHA staff to share more information about what a small department like ours are already doing to meet some of the new standard items and what we could possibly do to meet other items with little or no cost. Someone from the IAFF also questioned me if I was aware of the cancer causing PFASs in firefighter gear and if a small department like ours had

the proper equipment and gear for fighting wildland fires. I was able to answer yes to both of his questions but I really don’t know how many small rural fire chiefs could.

As part of the NVFC OSHA Task Force I was asked to listen into several days of the virtual hearings and the items below are my thoughts.

1. The proposal was drafted in a vacuum without equal representation of all of, or the majority of, emergency responders.

2. Almost all expressed that the current standard was outdated and warranted changes.

3. All agreed that responder safety was a major concern.

4. Strong opposition was voiced as to the technical and economic feasibility of the proposal.

5. There were mixed feelings with the concerns if volunteers should be exempt or not.

6. Despite claims that the proposal was flexible in nature, most felt it was too rigid and designed as a one size fits all solution and that it shouldn’t be.

7. Emergency services are delivered in a vastly different na-

ture and organizations function at various levels across the country.

8. That workplace response agencies and community response agencies are not the same.

9. That the delivery of emergency services would be severely impacted by the proposal as written.

10. Outside of the unions, consultants, and those that wanted to weaponize the standard to demand more money from municipalities, no one came forward to say the proposal as written was the best option available.

Here are some of the challenges moving ahead that the NVFC Task force see.

1. OSHA has invested a lot of time and money into the process to date. They will be looking to save face and not blow this up.

2. Changes to the existing standard are needed and warranted.

3. Exempting volunteers entirely will be difficult at best because of combination departments, definitions of volunteers, different laws in different states, the reduction of volunteer numbers across the country.

4. Only exempting volunteers

resulted in rewriting our drivers training program and conducting deliberate drivers training, including vehicle maintenance and a face-to-face interview with each Soldier by the commander.

I would encourage all of you to look at your departments and ask where your biggest risks exist. Do you have written SOGs/ SOPs? When were they last published? Are you following them?

How do you document training?

Beyond these, other legal risks may exist with personnel issues.

Does your department have written nondiscrimination policies in place? Does your department

have a formal process to deal with discipline or grievances?

Legal risks exist in everything your department does. It is incumbent upon leaders in your departments to identify and conduct a deliberate assessment of your risks, and mitigate where possible. As always, don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.

windy day in Nebraska and Iowa, conditions were so severe that an Iowa fire jumped across the Missouri River and raced through dry farm fields and ravines.

Multiple volunteer departments and others responded, trying to keep the fires from spreading westward. The Cass County fire burned more than 650 acres, with over 75 firefighters from 26 departments working to put out the blaze. During that same year in 2023, over 2,600 acres were burned in Jefferson County as a fast-moving wildland fire broke out, also involving Saline County. All of the above fires and others during the past recent years, resulted in multiple days of multiple volunteer firefighters, leaving their work, leaving their home, and leaving their families, all to help stop the fires in differ-

ent pockets across the state.

Of course, continued efforts to build the volunteer teams of EMTs in communities across the state continues to be so important to the lives and welfare of citizens in this state, as well as those passing through, as a host of people drive across the state on I-80 and tourists travel to other pockets of the state.

In an effort to encourage the continued recruitment and retention of volunteers across the state, it is hopeful that the Legislature will act on the request of the NSVFA to increase the amount of the annual state income tax credit to $1,000. As additional information is made available, updates will be shared.

6. Even if we get a political “stay” on this for now, when the political landscape changes back in 2 to 4 years, we will be fighting this battle all over again.

8. Any solution will have pain for some and there is no way to

keep everyone completely happy here.

9. This is not just going to go away.

Two Alliance teens involved in Sunday crash The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a crash in which two Alliance teens were killed Sunday morning, according to information released from authorities.

Alliance Police responded to a traffic crash west of Alliance on Otoe Road, discovering two persons deceased at the scene and a white BMW that had been

involved in the crash.

The Nebraska State Patrol also responded, conducting the investigation. The NSP released that a preliminary investigation has shown that a BWM sedan, driven

by Drayden Sanchez, 18, of Alliance was traveling eastbound on Otoe Road near County Road 62 at a high rate of speed. The driver

lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, and crashed into a field.

Sanchez and passenger Noemi Gonzalez, 18, of Alliance, died at the scene of the crash.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Propane heater blamed for fire that destroyed Hastings residence A portable propane heater ignited nearby combustibles to start Thursday evening’s fire at a house at 205 E. Fourth St., the city of Hastings reported Friday.

The house, which had been under construction, has been judged a total loss, the city said in a news update. Property belonging to one of the neighbors also was damaged.

Thursday’s fire was ruled to have been accidental in nature.

According to the initial report from the city on Thursday night, Hastings Fire & Rescue was called to the fire at 7:31 p.m., and the fire was under control around 8:30.

The Hastings Rural Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid. The Hastings Police Department, city Street Department and Hastings Utilities also responded.

All utilities had been disconnected at the house prior to the fire.

The occupants were evacuated.

Hickman Rural Fire and Rescue adds dive team

Shortly after the beginning of November, Hickman Rural Fire and Rescue officially added a dive team to their water and ice rescue program.

Hoping to be a regional resource for various recovery and rescue needs, Hickman Fire Chief John Brady is positive about the department upgrade.

“We’ve always had the ability to do ice rescues and to do small water rescues here and there,” he said. “It’s always been my goal, and the command staff’s goal as well, we felt it was very necessary to be a regional resource as well as a resource for the county, or for our district.”

Putting their heads together, one of the additions to their squad that made the most sense was that of a dive rescue team.

“And the reason for that is that we have three bodies of water in our fire district,” he said. “We have Stagecoach, Wagon Train and Hedgefield, and we didn’t really have a way to respond.”

Years ago, the Hickman department utilized a boat provided by the Lancaster County Emergency Management office. It was old, Brady added, and is now being serviced by the Lancaster County Sheriff ’s Office (LCSO), where Brady commands the Marine Unit.

When not serving at the helm of the local fire department, Brady can also be found in his role as a Deputy Sheriff for the LCSO. He’s also a Navy veteran.

“So we applied for a grant and we got the grant from the Jack Lewis (Safety Fund) that is out of Omaha,” Brady said. “It’s a phenomenal program. They help small departments kind of get these things started. We were awarded $18,000 for this grant.

We got super excited about that because we really wanted to get this thing kicked off.”

With the $18,000, Hickman Rural Fire and Rescue purchased a boat and the small stuff that goes along with it, as well as a

state-of-the-art Hummingbird sonar system, and dive equipment and training for two people.

The end goal would be to have a team of four certified divers, he added. Becoming a regional resource is important to Brady and the department, and having this dive team is just one of the ways to do that.

“There are no divers south of Saltillo Road,” Brady said. “So where Lincoln Fire and Rescue’s jurisdiction ends, we pick up all the way to the Kansas border. So we want to be a regional resource for everybody in many things, now to include any type of water operation or recovery.”

Recovery can take many forms, he explained, and not always tragic. Recovery options can include anything from human remains to vehicles and other important evidence.

“Anything that needs to be removed from the water, we now have a team that can do that,” Brady said.

Asked why being able to provide a service like this is so important, Brady was quick to note that “life happens.”

“A couple of years back, folks were out fishing on Wagon Train Lake (and a) storm came through and knocked them off the boat and they passed away,” he said.

“We didn’t have the ability to get there. You wanna make sure that you have the ability to respond to any emergency that faces you. We here at Hickman Fire and Rescue do everything we possibly can to be prepared for anything that crosses the plate.

That’s why we do it. That’s why we spend so much time and effort in trying to find the money, trying to do all of these things.”

And it’s important for those who are jumping to the rescue to be able to know how to do it safely, he agreed. Aside from adding another form of protection of the people to their squad, having specialized forces like that of a dive team also helps with recruitment.

“Which is where we struggle the most,” Brady said. “When

by Cheyenne Rowe of The Voice News. you can offer them special programs like this where people can learn special skills outside of just fire and EMS, I’m hoping that attracts folks.”

The Hickman Rural Fire and Rescue dive team has already been called to action once since their inception in early November, Brady reported. The LCSO called in the Hickman duo to help recover the remains of a gentleman who had succumbed in a creek. The dive team was able to utilize their skills and training in the effort.

“Our mutual aid group for Lancaster County extends outside, so we have Crete and Cortland, Douglas and Adams, all of those folks,” he said. “So the good thing is we’re not tied down to anything. If they need help, we’re coming.”

Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department, with the aid of North Platte Fire and Rescue and Brady Volunteer Fire Department, battled a structure fire on Peaceful Road, just southwest of Maxwell Thursday.

Fire crews were called to the scene shortly before 10:30 a.m. for the report of a fire on Peaceful Road, just outside Maxwell city limits about 10 miles east of North Platte.

Smoke could be seen coming from the side away from the road. Two tankers from North Platte were on scene assisting in battling the fire, as were firefighters from Brady.

Authorities were still on scene as of noon. Additional information was not available at press time.

A one-vehicle accident north of Elgin late Sunday night claimed the life of a Lincoln woman. According to Antelope County Sheriff Bob Moore, Laura Schindlbeck, 47, died from injuries she sustained in an accident which occurred near the intersection of Highway 14 and 523 Avenue shortly after 11 p.m.

Moore said Schindlbeck was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer Utility SUV headed northbound towards Neligh when the vehicle dropped a wheel off the road. He said she attempted to regain control but failed to do so as the vehicle rolled. He said she wasn’t wearing seatbelts and was ejected from the vehicle.

The Elgin Rescue Squad was summoned to the scene as were members of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department. The ambulance transferred her to Antelope Memorial Hospital where she later died. Investigating the accident was the Nebraska State Patrol and the Antelope County Sheriff’s Department.

Moore said Schindlbeck was the second motor vehicle fatality in the county in 2024. “I’ve seen a ton of fatalities (in my career) from over-correcting.”
