Welcome FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to the official magazine of the Northeastern State University Department of Music. It is my pleasure to introduce you to the activities of our spring semester. It has been quite busy and fruitful thanks to the diligent hard work of our faculty, staff, and students. I am also excited to bring you this new magazine format, which I hope you will find engaging and dynamic. As this is an interactive online magazine, please take time to discover links that will take you to different pages and beyond to external information. Inside, I think you’ll find that our programs are alive and well, our faculty are active, and our students engaged in creative endeavors.

GUEST ARTISTS AT NSU MUSIC The NSU Department of Music hosted many guest artists this spring semester. These artists are experts in their respective fields and instruments and collaborated with music faculty to bring their talents and expertise to our students and the community. Dr. Robert Bailey, NSU Trumpet Professor Emeritus, stopped in for a masterclass with the NSU Trumpets on January 10th.
From Tarleton State University, Jennifer Rodriguez gave a flute recital and masterclass on January 30th.
The United States Air Force Mission Winds performed a concert in the Center for the Performing Arts on February 2nd.
Dr. Paul Budde on tuba, and Dr. Robert Spring on clarinet, joined us for NSU Instrumental Day, performing a joint recital and providing masterclasses for NSU and area high school students on February 12th.
Tenor, Gregory Turay, joined us for the 2018 Vocal Festival for a recital and masterclass with NSU students on February 18-19th.
Dr. David Amlung, Assistant Professor of Trumpet at McMurry University, gave a masterclass to NSU students and performed a recital on February 25th.

The Piano Area and Dr. Ronald Chioldi invited two guest artists to campus this year. March welcomed the 15th annual NSU Piano Festival and Young Artist Competition to campus on March 2-3. This year’s guest artist was Brian Hsu from Loyola University in New Orleans.
The 51st annual Green Country Jazz Festival was one for the history books. It was a stellar couple of days of music-making. Dr. Clark Gibson, Director of Jazz Studies, brought in several guest artists as judges for the festival and performances for the evening concert on March 5th. Pat Bianchi was the headliner on organ with other special guests, Oliver Nelson, Justin Copeland, Jeremy Thomas, Jim Pisano, and Euan Edmonds.
Southwestern Oklahoma State University Assistant Professor of Flute, Dr. Shelley Martinson, joined us for a recital on March 27th. She was featured with Dr. Yu-Ling Chen on piano.
The NSU Jazz Studies area hosted guest artist, Doug Beavers, presenting music from his grammy nominated release “Art of the Arrangement” on April 9th. He was joined with members from the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, vocalist Carlos Cascante and George Delgado.
Dr. Sonja Sepulveda is Director of Choral Activities at Salem College in North Carolina and conducts the professional choir, the Palmetto Voices. She served as guest clinician and conductor for the University/Community Chorus on April 17th. Under her direction, the Chorus presented a concert of Spirituals.

NSU Music at the Oklahoma Music Educato
The University Singers, under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Wall, were selected to perform as an honor choral group for this year’s OkMEA conference. It is a blind audition selection process by recording submission and is very competitive among many deserving choirs in the state. It was an honor to be selected.
The performance was well-received by a discerning : Debbie Landry audience of choral directors fromPhoto across the state. Dr. Charles Chapman, long time editor of Tutti: The magazine of the Oklahoma Choral Directors Association and Professor Emeritus at Southwestern Oklahoma State University said, “In my opinion, it was the outstanding group of the two-day series. They sang with lovely, unified tone, quality, and superb precision.”

January 18-20
Music Education Student Representative Sophomore saxophonist, Kelli Martin (pictured right), was our Music Education Student Representative at OkMEA. She worked the NSU Music booth, prepared giveaways, and helped recruit future RiverHawks (below). Martin was selected and awarded registration fees and lodging to attend this fantastic Music Education conference. When she wasn’t working the booth, she was able to take in a few interest and concert sessions.
Intercollegiate Honor Band Several NSU Band students had the opportunity to work with a guest clinician and conductor for the OkMEA Intercollegiate Band. Under the direction of Dr. Debra Traficante from Kennesaw State University, the students rehearsed together and performed a fantastic concert at 2:00 p.m. on January 18th. NSU students Zach Brown, Joseph Compton, Jeric Davison (right), Brennan Marcotte, Margaret Michka, Sarah Thompson, Colton Tiger, Kiley Warnock, and Bailey Wyckoff were selected to represent our university.

THE UNIVERSITY SINGERS TAKE ON DALLAS
The University Singers were invited to sing as Prelude Choir for the North Texas Metroplex Children’s Choir on February 3rd in the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in the Dallas Arts District. They performed for a very large and receptive audience. Dr. Rollo Dilworth from Temple University directed the children’s chorus and worked with the University Singers to combine on a finale selection. Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Jeffery Wall, said “This invitation came in a couple of years ago, so we had time to plan a full-fledged performance tour revolving around this feature concert at the Meyerson.” The singers departed on February 1st and stopped in to perform for Durant High School as they traveled into southeastern Oklahoma. The tour continued into Texas with high school stops at Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, and Booker T. Washington High School of Fine Arts in Dallas. The ensemble also performed a full concert of their own at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Allen, Texas. It was a time of bonding and camaraderie as the University Singers had excursions at The Dallas Museum of Art, NorthPark Center, Grapevine Mills, and went to the top of Reunion Tower. The tour concluded with the singers serenading the waitstaff and customers of Spaghetti Warehouse.

51st annual Green Country Jazz Festival
The 2018 Green Country Jazz Festival brought in the 51st anniversary of this awesome musical offering to NSU jazz students, high school jazz bands, and the Tahlequah community. It was a smorgasbord of jazz specialist guest artists featuring headliner, Pat Bianchi on organ. Sunday, March 4th was the Judges’ Jam at the NSU Jazz Lab a favorite of concert-goers and students. This was a great opportunity to hear these judges and performing artists in their element. Monday, March 5th was the adjudicated festival. This year, NSU hosted more high school jazz bands than ever before - a whopping 21 bands performed for the judges! That evening, the final performance featured the NSU Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Clark Gibson. The audience was treated to informative introductions to each of the Oliver Nelson pieces by Oliver Nelson, Jr. Each guest artist was also prominently featured. Jeremy Thomas played drums and organ, Jim Pisano played sax, Euan Edmonds on trombone, and Justin Copeland on trumpet. There was a little bit of something for everyone from movie music to great arrangements of jazz standards. Some repeat audience members left saying it was the best Green Country Jazz Festival they have ever attended.

NSU Concerto Competition Winner
Each year, students audition in the fall to compete for the NSU Concerto Competition. Winners are afforded the opportunity to perform as featured soloist with the NSU Wind Ensemble in the subsequent spring semester. Collinsville, Oklahoma native and freshman trumpet performance major, Timothy Caputo, is the 2018 winner. When asked what made him audition for the competition, Timmy said, “Walking down this hall, I always saw Colton’s poster hanging on the wall [2017 winner, Colton Tiger] and I thought that was cool. Professor Hay also recommended that I try it.” Auditions consist of playing the intended selection with piano reduction accompaniment for a panel of all full-time Department of Music faculty members. Competition was tough as there were several very capable players. It is rare that a freshman is named as winner. Caputo played the Sonata for Trumpet and Wind Ensemble by Kent Kennan on the Wind Ensemble Concert held April 23, 2018. In preparation for this concert, Caputo mentioned that rehearsals with the Wind Ensemble are quite different than playing with just piano. “It’s a larger group of people playing together and that can become complicated.”

Trumpet instructor, Benjamin Hay, had this to say about Timmy and the competition: “I think that music majors should be pushing their musical abilities as much as possible during their time in college. The NSU Concerto Competition provides an excellent goal to work towards and an opportunity to work on their audition skills. Timmy is a gifted music performance freshman, and I thought he should give the competition everything he had. There really is no “down side” to entering this type of competition. Everyone who competes gets better in the long run, so I encouraged several of my students to enter. Timmy undoubtedly rose to the occasion, and had a very strong audition. I couldn’t be more proud of his hard work and positive attitude.” You can support the band program and students like Timmy Caputo in a number of ways. NSU Opera Workshop and The Elixir of Love NSU Opera Workshop, under the direction of Dr. Whitney Myers, presented Gaetano Donizetti’s classic comic opera, L’elisir d’amore, with a modern twist. Dr. James Adams served as conductor and Mr. Farren Mayfield was rehearsal pianist. Sound and technical needs were under the purview of Ms. Ashley Sage, our NSU Music Facilities Manager. Dr. Myers had this to say about the production: Opera Workshop had a blast this Spring presenting Gaetano Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. The production was staged and set in modern times in the Hamptons. It was performed in English so as to make the opera more accessible to a broad audience. The cast consisted of students, faculty members, and community members, making for a well-rounded experience for everyone. We look forward to presenting modern English operas in the up-coming years, and opening up opportunities for community members to get involved in the NSU Opera Workshop experience. A large scale production like this takes many hands and contributors. From auditioning, music rehearsing, blocking, acting, and orchestra rehearsals, to the less visible elements like stage management, lighting, administrative management, set design, costuming, makeup and hair, design and marketing, it takes a village to successfully perform a work like this. Thanks to all involved, the production was a hit with audience members while giving students the experience they need in this important artistic genre. We hope you will consider a charitable contriubtion to help us bring more experiences like this for our students and interesting programming to our community.

The Northeastern State University/Community Chorus announces a performance tour to Ireland, scheduled for March 18-24, 2019. Through Music Celebrations International, the NSU Chorus has been invited to participate in the American Celebration of Music in Ireland as a representative of Oklahoma. Under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Wall, the Chorus will perform three concerts and experience Bunratty, Cork, Ring of Kerry, Blarney, Waterford, Kilkenny, Glendalough, and Dublin. Dr. Wall has also invited the Tulsa Community College Choir, under the direction of Laura Cowan to travel and perform with NSU. Two farewell concerts will be performed here at home prior to travel: one in Tulsa at TCC on March 9, 2019 and one in Tahlequah at NSU on March 14, 2019. We hope you will join us!

Faculty News Dr. James Adams served as a literature and audio reviewer for the International Trombone Association Journal. His most recent 3 reviews were published in the January 2018 issue. Adams conducted trombone sectional for the OkMEA High School All-State Symphonic Band and was selected as Assistant Manager of the Intercollegiate Honor Band for 2019.
Dr. Ronald Chioldi adjudicated the first national Steinway and Sons piano competition held at Saied Music in Tulsa. The competition was open to students from Oklahoma and Arkansas. He continues his work, as a coauthor, on the 7th edition of Keyboard Fundamentals, published later this year. He is the Director of NSU’s Community Music Academy, which is in its fourth year. The community school is comprised of 12 faculty and 80 music students.
After 23 years of service to NSU, Associate Professor of Voice, Dr. Robert M. Daniel commences his retirement. During his lengthy and notable career (even before NSU), he impacted the lives of so many students with his knowledge, humility, and humor, always wanting the best for students. Dr. Daniel taught applied voice, voice class, vocal diction, music history, aural theory, and music appreciation. His influence is felt in the lives and professions of alumni, music majors, general education students, and faculty colleagues. Though he is still very active in the area, “Dr. Bob” as he is affectionately known, will be missed as a daily part of the NSU music experience. Happy retirement, Dr. Daniel!

Dr. Clark Gibson, Assistant Professor of Music and head of Jazz Studies, hosted the 51st annual Green Country Jazz Festival on March 4 and 5, where he and students had an opportunity to work with world-renowned organist Pat Bianchi (see pages 9-10).
Mr. Ben Hay, Instructor of Trumpet, was very active this spring as a member of the Tulsa Signature Symphony, regular substitute for the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas. He hosted 2 guest trumpet artists on the NSU campus. Hay also gave lectures and performances as guest artist at Eastern Illinois University and at the International Trumpet Guild Regional Conference at Oklahoma City University. He had music reviews published in the March 2018 International Trumpet Guild Journal. Hay acted as guest faculty at the Midwest Trumpet Festival in Pittsburg, KS. He performed as guest principal trumpet for the Bartlesville Choral Society, and was principal solo cornet with Arkansas Musicworks Brass Band. He continues to teach with the NSU Community Music Academy.
Dr. Jeffery Wall conducted the University Singers for a performance as an invited honor group at the OkMEA conference in Tulsa and on tour through the Dallas area (see pages 5-8). He presented on the topic of social media use for recruiting and marketing music and specifically choral programs at the National College Music Society Conference in San Antonio, TX, and at the Southwestern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association in Oklahoma City. Wall served as an adjudicator for the Aria/Concerto competition at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He adjudicated the Oklahoma state choral contest at Norman North High School and the Arkansas state choral festival for 4 days in Conway, Arkansas. He conducted the Bixby Public School’s “Men’s Night Out” event for male choir. Dr. Wall continues his work as conductor with his professional level ensemble, Vox Solaris Chamber Choir in Broken Arrow. In addition to performing with the Tulsa Signature Symphony, Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Music Tulsa, and Tulsa Opera, Dr. Anne Watson was active recording new band music for Carl Fischer, LLC in Florida. She also led bass clarinet sectionals for the OkMEA All-State Band and acts as a Quality Matters Reviewer for online course review.

Student News The NSU Trumpet Ensemble, under the direction of Ben Hay, played for the regional conference of the International Trumpet Guild at Oklahoma City University on January 26th. The trumpet ensemble personnel includes: Timothy Caputo, Brennan Marcotte, Maxwell Sellars, Jackson Washburn, and Christopher Whipple.

Several students passed the junior standing juries this semester. Students in the Bachelor of Arts degree in Performance and Jazz Studies, and the Bachelor of Music Education degree must successfully pass a juried performance exam in front of the entire music faculty before being allowed to enroll in upper level applied lessons or continue in the degree plan. The Spring semester brought many recitals. We applaud these students that performed wonderful student recitals towards degree completion! Bachelor of Arts - Performance major, Sarah Thompson, presented her senior flute recital on February 28th. She is a student of Dr. Kristyn Son.
Margaret Michka presented her junior flute recital on March 1st as partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Arts degree in Performance. She is a student of Dr. Kristyn Son. Senior Jazz Studies Major, Christopher Peters, presented his final drum recital on March 8th at the Jazz Lab. Chris is a student of Jared Johnson, Dr. James Lindroth, and Dr. Clark Gibson. Junior Bachelor of Music Education student, Brianne Morgan, presented her flute recital on March 13th. She is a student of Dr. Kristyn Son. Senior Vocal Performance Major, Caleb Cline, performed his final recital as an NSU tenor on March 15th. Caleb is a student of Dr. Robert Daniel. Colton Tiger performed his clarinet recital, in fulfillment of the Bachelor of Music Education degree on March 26th. Colton is a student of Dr. Anne Watson. Blayne Littleford presented a percussion recital as a BME student on March 28th. Blayne is a student of Dr. James Lindroth. Lindsey Richmond and Chelsey Kimble both performed their recitals as sopranos on March 29th and April 11th, respectively. They are both BME students and both students of Dr. Whitney Myers. The NSU Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. James Lindroth, performed at the Oklahoma Percussive Arts Society on April 27th in Owasso. The percussion ensemble personnel includes: Trevor Downey, Zachary Brown, Christopher Peters, Blayne Littleford, Andrew Lindroth, Jacob Martin, Braelyn Hall, and Daniel Murillo.

Alumni News During the 2017-2018 academic year, Stephen Clark (BA, 2010) completed his second year in the prestigious Yale Opera program, and received a Master of Musical Arts degree from Yale University. He sang the role of Sarastro in the Yale Opera production of Die Zauberflöte, and had the great privilege of performing as the bass soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under the baton of the renowned conductor Marin Alsop. At the end of his time there, he was also given David L. Kasdon Memorial Prize, given every year to an outstanding singer at Yale. Outside of the Yale School of Music, Mr. Clark also performed the bass solos in Beethoven’s Ninth with the Hartford Symphony and Handel’s Messiah with the Hartford Chorale. During the summer of 2018, he will return to Chautauqua Opera as an Apprentice Artist, where he will sing the role of Masetto in Don Giovanni, while covering Leporello in the same production and Pangloss in Leonard Bernstein’s Candide.
Jason Hill (BA, Musical Theatre/Piano, 2003) continues to work as an accompanist and keyboardist/musical director outside of NYC in northern New Jersey. This year he has played and programmed synth books for productions of Hairspray, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, Pippin, Addams Family, and Legally Blond.
Michiko Saiki (BM, Performance/Piano, 2011) was chosen to attend Royaumont Music Academy to perform in Ensemble Voix Novelles at Lauréat de la Fondation Royaumont (Royaumont, France), performed with Dresden-based new music ensemble El Perro Anderuz (Dresden / Leipzig), and was awarded the J. Paul Kennedy Music Achievement Award from Bowling Green State University. She is based is based in Liepzig, Germany, and works as a freelance musician and videographer.
Daniel Thompson (BA, Applied/Piano 2011) gave a talk at the Semiotic Society of America in Puebla, Mexico (October) and is speaking at the International Conference of Žižek Studies. He is on faculty at the University of Iowa where he teaches music theory.
