This issue of Nspire Magazine is an attempt at helping you get focused. Among other things, life should be about spending time with loved ones, enjoying nature’s playground, appreciating the beauty of an artistic talent, and even taking a timeout for ourselves. As Editor of Nspire Mag., I have the opportunity to meet new people every day, and listen to their stories, their experiences with life, and challenges. And they mean something to me, these people and their stories. My life, my view of the world, is changed by them; I’m compelled to exclaim, “What a wonderful gift to be blessed with the privilege to do what I do, and to do what I love.”

You’ll hike through majestic mountains to secluded alpine lakes, take a dip in some magnificent hot tubs, and chat with a New York Times bestselling author. You’ll go skiing, grow peaches, do some squats, and learn to cook some really great steak. In the end, my hope is that your desire to live an inspired life will grow, and that you’ll come to agree that life is just better when shared with others. Dedicated to those who have inspired me over the past 6 months: a young foreign artist, Thijme Termaat, whose meeting was not truly by chance, and who opened my eyes in a way no one has; to a high school creative writing teacher, Mr. Ruskovich, whose influence has weathered the ages, and, for whom, so many of his students have a grateful heart; to you readers, whom, without you, my life would be a grey, nine-to-five drudgery; and to a man they call The Great White Buffalo.

Chef Scott Miller built an early foundation in French cuisine at his parents’ restaurant. He believes, “the best dishes come together out of love, caring and simple ingredients.” Chef Scott takes every opportunity to create a dining experience that will leave you “Scotty-fied.” TOP SIRLOIN STEAK »» 2 ea top sirloin center cut steaks »» ½ tsp steak seasoning »» 1 tsp clarified butter or vegetable oil »» 4 ounces Chatteroy Farms Coffee & Cocoa nib Chèvre »» ½ tbsp balsamic reduction (Both the Chèvre and balsamic reduction are available at your favorite specialty market) »» 2 servings of your favorite mashed potatoes »» 2 servings of your favorite vegetables (We’ll use steamed asparagus and Washington chanterelle mushrooms)
Pre-heat oven to 350* Heat a sauté pan with the clarified butter until hot. Season the steaks and place them carefully in the hot pan to sear. When nicely browned on one side, turn steaks over and place pan with steaks in the oven. Cook to desired temperature. At this point, flip the steaks and top each steak with 2oz. of the Chèvre cheese. Return the pan to the oven for 1-2 minutes to soften and melt the cheese. When perfectly done, plate steaks with the potatoes and vegetables. Drizzle balsamic reduction to complete the perfection. Chef Frank Ciccone, born and raised in Coeur d’Alene, thought he’d grow up to be a scientist. “Eventually,” he says, “I realized cooking was all the science I needed to be happy in my professional life. So, I committed to it and never looked back.” MISO MARINADE: »» 1 tbsp red miso paste dissolved in 2 tbsp water »» 3 tbsp sugar »» 1/4 tsp chopped ginger »» 1/4 tsp chopped garlic »» 1 tbsp sesame oil »» 1/2 tsp soy sauce »» 1 tbsp sake
Combine all ingredients and cover New York steak trimmed and cut into 3 thin steaks. Marinate for 1 to 2 hours. VEGETABLE SALAD: »» 1 english cucumber seeded and cut in 1/8” slices »» 1/4 carrot cut thin »» 1 oz. thin sliced red onion »» 2 oz. green beans blanched and chilled cut in half »» 2 roma tomatoes seeded and cut in thin strips »» 1 tbsp crushed peanuts
Dress salad and fill radicchio leaves. Grill New Yorks 1-minute per side for medium rare. Let steaks rest for 2-minutes, then slice into strips. Place steak strip on top of salad, and garnish with toasted sesame seeds, cilantro, and fried rice noodles. (This makes a great first course for any Asian inspired meal.)

Meat is a fabulous food and should be enjoyed as much as possible, while keeping its inherent flavor profiles.” GRILLED BONE-IN RIB EYE »» 12 oz. Bone-In Rib Eye Steak »» Garlic Salt »» Black Pepper PREPARATION:
Sprinkle both sides of steak with salt and pepper. Let sit unrefrigerated 30-60 min prior to cooking. Pre-heat grill to as hot as possible (My grill reaches 700F). Seer Steak 3-4 min each side, depending on thickness of meat cut. Once seered, turn heat off, but leave steaks in grill for 5-10 min more. (Be sure to monitor internal meat temp with an appropriate meat thermometer to desired “done” status.) Plate and serve.

feel myself waking before the alarm sounds; it’s still dark. I try to go back to sleep. Then, the alarm goes off. Any other day of the week, I would be bothered. I am not a morning person, and anyone who knows me can attest to that. But, on this particularly brisk morning in North Idaho, a rush of enthusiasm suppresses my typical morning grogginess, as I remember today is Saturday. Today, I’m in search of epic powder. This gives me the drive to arise with alacrity. I retrieve my phone from the charger, and the Saturday ritual begins. I check the surrounding resorts. Schweitzer got dumped on with seven inches of fresh powder last night; Schweitzer it is.
much as possible – ski junkies will do anything for the possibility to make the first tracks. Sure enough, at the base of the mountain the traffic merges into a line of powder seekers, beginning the ascent. We are more and more eager with every switchback on the snow packed road.
I dress quickly, toss my gear in the back on my SUV, and secure my skis in the roof rack. The fresh wax makes me smile.
The parking lot is bursting with skiers and boarders, as I march awkwardly to the lodge with my gear. We are all smiling, despite the hour; I will have many friends on the slopes today. The lodge is rustic, and warm, familiar even to first timers.
It’s still dark when I pull onto US 95 and head north. It’s not quite an hour drive to Schweitzer Mountain from Hayden, but by the time I arrive it will be light, and I know I won’t be alone. I’m trying to beat the crowd as

will be shared with both strangers and acquaintances. It’s a place where new friendships will be made, if only for a day, and a place I will long for after a chilly and exhilarating day on the slopes. I will have my own stories to share.

my skis to float in the steep powder. I step onto my skis and lock into my bindings. Satisfied with the fit, I give that first swift push with my poles, and glide forward, happy once again that I had them waxed. Even the packed snow near the lodge feels light under my skis. Soon, I am gathered up in the cold security of the chair lift, and taken swiftly to the top of the softly blanketed slopes. As I disembark the lift, I feel the wind curl up the mountain. I fill my lungs with cool winter air, and take in the grand view. I have been here hundreds of times, but the view never loses its power to awe me. There is nothing but blue sky overhead. The clouds gather in small pillows far below. I imagine it is still snowing at the lodge. Lake Pend O’rielle is off in the distance. The peaks of the mountains stand tall, as if guarding the circumference of the massive lake. I stand the tallest of all I see.
I have a sense of purpose in the vast world; I belong here. I am grateful for this moment. I pull out my phone, and take a picture, attempting to capture the moment forever. I review the photo, but nothing can emulate fully what is in front of me. I zip the phone back into my coat pocket, and slide my gloved hands into my pole straps; I’ve got an old hunger to feed. The pangs are real, but it is not a hunger for food. It is a hunger for nourishment of a different kind. It’s a hunger for sunlight on the snow, and the sound of freshly waxed skis gliding through waist deep powder. It’s a hunger for the burning in the thighs as they battle, simultaneously, both the speed and the terrain of a challenging descent, for the exhilaration that can only be known by one who tests themselves against the mountain. The run cascades below me. Wind rushes
up from below, cutting through my warm, clouds of breath. The quiet of the mountain silences my thoughts. I hesitate only a moment, then my hunger propels me forward. As I breach the cusp of the mountain ridge and begin my descent, my heart leaps, and I smile. I’ve been here before; this mountain, this run. She’s like an old friend, and my movements become both free and calculated, synchronized and spontaneous. Powder engulfs me; I am lost in it. A deep thrill courses through me as, for a brief moment, I’m skiing blind. Then I’m out again, trees speed by as I cut hard; right and left, right and left, leaving a snaking path through the previously untouched snow behind me. My poles plant with each turn. My weight is balanced evenly on each ski, and I feel the pressure move from the balls of my feet to my heels and back again, guiding my skis

through every movement. At this speed, it’s about precision. It’s about falling into a natural rhythm with the mountain, becoming one with all around me. I focus on what lies ahead of me, and absorb the icy cloud below. I’m breathing heavily, and I can see my breath on my goggles with each exhale. Heat expands in my thighs and calves. Muscles are bearing the repetitive sway of my

body. With determination, I twist hard, catch the edge of my skis and bear down, producing a wave of snow that cascades below as I come to a powerful stop. I stand tall with my poles bearing some of my weight. My breathing is rapid, strained at this altitude. Slowly, I scan the landscape, taking in the scene once more. Then, I take one last deep breath and lunge forward. The slope takes hold, and pulls me effortlessly down its steep terrain. I am aware of nothing but the powder in my face, the motion of my body, and the strength within me. Eventually, I see other skiers come into my view, and with each glance down toward the base of the run they get larger and larger. I am gaining on them. I don’t know them, but they are still considered my friends; a small army who knows that shredding waistdeep, weightless powder is the most exalted experience in skiing. Never do I follow the same line, the same jump, or the same course. Every run is an invitation to try something
new, to explore the mountain’s terrain and my own capabilities. Every run beckons one more attempt. I create a stunning track through the trees; I dart and dodge and duck and rise. Elation attempts to break my concentration and cloud my focus. The light virgin powder lifts high above my head, and trails behind like an icy comet. Every moment waiting at the lifts is a welcomed rest. I scan the mountainside. The snow on this majestic mountain is shredded a bit more each time I ride the chairlift up to its peak. The once perfect sea of powder is now rippled, torn, and marked, like the carvings of some ancient society. I leave my own story today. All who look upon it will know my tale and will experience my many hours of magnificent play. I am not left untouched; the mountain has left her own marks on me as well, and I will forever be drawn back to her. Eventually, the chair lifts come to a bitter cold stop. The sun waves goodnight, falls below the horizon, and after a story or two at the

lodge, I stuff my soggy gear back into my SUV. A caravan of cars are merging and departing down the mountain. Like ants leaving a trail of pheromones for the ones behind, they travel in a line, and, if the snow is right, they’ll follow it back up the mountain next weekend.

The drive home always seems longer, but I gladly replay the day’s events over in my mind – each run, every ride, every thrill. I revel in my thoughts and memories as the heater blasts. At home, before I do anything else, I look at the photos from my first ascent of the day, hopeful I’ve captured the experience. They don’t do it justice. Later, I return to my bed, weary, and wondering where I’ll ski next Saturday. I drift off to sleep with thoughts of Silver Mountain, Mount Spokane, and Lookout Pass. Which will it be? Only the snow will tell. N

My wife has been talking about a vacation for a long time, but my work doesn’t allow for it; I’m just not able to get away right now, no matter how much we want to. In any case, we need to do something special together; we need to relax and reconnect. As I lounge in the privacy of the outdoor soaking tub at Coeur d’Alene Casino’s Spa, Ssakwa’q’n, with my gorgeous wife sitting on the edge with her feet in the water next
to me, I can’t remember a time I felt more relaxed. It seems it’s been a long time since we’ve felt so connected. There’s no one here but us, and we’re free to talk about anything, but mostly we just talk about how good it feels to be here. I get out after awhile and stretch out in a poolside chair. I’m not thinking about work, not worried about the kids – they’re with their grandparents – I’m just looking up at the sky and realizing how beautiful it is, and how long it’s been since I’ve noticed. I raise my

head to look at my lady. She seems so peaceful, still sitting in the sun and sipping her lemon and water. She’s glowing. We could be anywhere else in the world and she wouldn’t look more lovely, and we wouldn’t feel any better. A while later we’re called in for our couples massage; we’re going for a stone massage today. I can only imagine how great this will be. We’re not going to want to leave. In any case, we’re going to want to come back, no question.

My guy surprises me with an evening out. He’s set up the whole thing, and says I’m going to love it. He’s a contact-sports kind of man; sensitive, sure, but it’s buried pretty deep. There’s really no telling what he’s got planned. When we pull into the parking lot at Zi-Spa, I ask if he’s joking. As we wait in the “Zen Lounge” for our couples massage, I catch myself sighing. A Mid-Summer’s Journey to
I
The Little Switzerland of America
finagled a three-day weekend away from the office. The Subaru is neatly packed, the gas tank full, the GPS estimates we will arrive in Enterprise, Oregon in a little over four hours. We back out the driveway and head south at 6:00 p.m. on a Thursday evening in early August, craving an escape to higher altitudes. We are headed to the Wallowa Mountains in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area within the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The Eagle Cap Wilderness area is Oregon’s largest at 556 square miles and is the ultimate playground for the outdoor enthusiast. It offers 534 miles of developed trails for

exploring the over 50 alpine lakes and 32 peaks over 8,000 feet. A childlike excitement comes over me as I begin our journey. As daylight fades to dusk, we weave our way down the canyon to Lewiston at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. From Lewiston, the road south is mostly uneventful until the road begins a relentless procession of hairpin turns that are enough to make a sailor carsick. The winding continues until we reach the crossing of the Grand Ronde River, beautiful in the moonlit night. There is another fifteen miles or so of nausea as the road curves and bends, snakes and winds to the
final straightaway that brings us to Enterprise, Oregon. It’s past 11:00 p.m. We arrive at the hotel weary, grateful for the receptionist who stayed open late to check us in. The hotel parking lot is full of firefighters’ trucks. Several crews of firefighters are getting a night’s rest in the motel before heading back to battle the Hurricane Creek forest fire at first light. The next morning, while packing up the car, we meet with some of the firefighters in the parking lot of the hotel. We quiz the fireman on the Hurricane Creek fire and ask them for their assessment of the fire dangers in the Lostine, where

we are headed. Having just been in the Lostine the day before, they give us their blessing to head out. We all leave the parking lot at the same early hour, heading into the wilderness for very different reasons. Naturally, we stop for a latte at the local coffee shop en route to the trail head. We drive to the town of Lostine, where we head up the Lostine River seventeen miles to where the road ends at Two Pan Campground. There are over forty cars and horse trailers in the car park, a sign that we’ll have company on the trail. Mindful of the fire danger, we carefully fill out the permit info before depositing our permit and cash into the drop box. I chose the trail to Mirror Lake up the east side of the Lostine River due to its relatively gentle nature in comparison to the strenuous trek up to nearby Ice Lake. We begin our journey under cloudy skies, with a twenty percent chance of thunderstorms per the NOAA.org forecast. I must confess,a thunderstorm in the mountains is my kryptonite. I cower when I hear the thunder reverberate off the granite peaks of the mountains near home and jump at every lightning bolt. But for the scenery and trail system before me in the Wallows, I decide I can deal with today’s odds. Packed for two nights, we planned to set base camp at Mirror Lake, then summit Eagle Cap and explore the Lake Basin with light day packs. The first two miles of the trail switches back and forth and gains about 1,500 ft. of elevation until we reach the meadow. Here, the view opens up to the breathtaking valley. The clouds begin to part giving us sneak peeks of Eagle Cap before us, impressive at 9,572 ft. Hiking the trail itself is a social event of sorts; we are greeted
by a steady procession of travelers headed back to the trail head on foot, on horseback, and on mules. I enjoy making small talk with the hikers and sizing up their gear to make mental estimations of how many days they have spent in the Wilderness Area. I appreciate how well marked, well maintained and in some ways, how well traveled the trail is. It is fun to see so many people of all ages enjoying the wilderness, respecting the trail and wearing infectious smiles that evidence the success of their journey. This is what a real day off is made of. We meander through the valley, pausing to inspect unique rocks and bantering over whether they are sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous, a side effect of being parents of an eighth grader. The sun is out now and the skies have cleared. We stop at the bridge over Lostine Creek, dump our packs, remove our boots, and wade into the refreshing water. We laugh as the water, fed by the snowmelt on the peaks, quickly changes from refreshing to frigid to ‘I can’t feel my feet’ cold. Invigorated, we resume up the trail to complete the last few miles of trail to Mirror Lake. Unlike so many of my favorite haunts closer to home, there are plentiful camp spots to choose from on the rock benches along the north shore of the lake. We disperse into the customary activity of seeking out the best possible camp site. We find it, no question, and begin to set up camp. I rinse off the day’s sweat at a sandy little beach below the campsite and don long sleeves and pants, a protective layer of clothing in defense against the army of mosquitos that dusk has summoned. By now, there is not
a breath of wind. The lake is still, perfectly peaceful and serene (except for said mosquitos). My cell phone and email are distant memories. I give a thankful nod to my associate who graciously offered to handle the weekend’s business, affording me this special retreat. I grab the water bottles, bladders, and filter and wander over to the lake’s drainage to stock up on water for the next day’s adventure. Along the way, I spot the Matterhorn to the north; her twisted spire leaves no question as to why the peak bears the namesake of Switzerland’s crooked beauty. You begin to realize why this area is commonly referred to as the Little Switzerland of America. I select a freeze dried package of food for dinner, try a bit, and carefully make note of the name on the packet so as to never purchase it again. Anyway, I am more interested in the photographic opportunities that dusk offers. We chase the light with our cameras up and down the shoreline, snapping photos and trying to capture and record the beauty of this place in this moment.
It is fun to see so many people enjoying the wilderness.

We enjoy this challenge until the day’s light is gone. The moon, nearly full, rises and rests in a saddle above the lake’s drainage creek, delighting us before bedtime. At an elevation of 7,595ft, the low temperature hovers around the perfect sleeping temperature of forty degrees. After carrying full packs for eight miles and busying ourselves around camp all evening, we sleep soundly.
I am thankful for this sight and cognizant that so many people never have the opportunity to see such beauty.
The next morning, after admonishing myself for sleeping through the best light of the morning, I stumble out of the tent and head toward the lake with my camera. There is not a cloud in the sky, not a breath of wind. The mountain’s reflection on the lake makes for the type of photos where you can’t decipher right-side-up from upsidedown. The morning sun is casting a glorious amber glow on Eagle Cap. I am thankful for this sight and cognizant that so many people never have the opportunity to see such beauty. Here is Mirror Lake, beneath Eagle Cap Peak in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area, arguably one of earth’s most beautiful spots, a mere four-and-a-half hour drive and eight-mile hike from home. While sipping a powdered Starbucks Via coffee, we pack a few energy bars and head down the trail to summit Eagle Cap, passing the pristine Upper Lake. We turn off at Horton Pass and head toward the summit. Eagle Cap, at 9,575ft, offers sweeping views of Hurricane Canyon (where the wildfire has been burning), the Matterhorn, Glacier Lake and the seemingly endless Lostine Canyon, from which we came the day before. From Eagle Cap, we see the smoke slithering into parts of the Lostine Canyon and thickening in Hurricane Canyon. We’d planned

to spend the day exploring nearby lakes in the basin, but despite the forecast for light winds, we make the decision to descend back to camp and hike out. It’s a bittersweet decision to forego the extra night and the planned exit via Minam Lake and the longer West Lostine River Trail. As we re-trace our steps out the Lostine, the smoke slowly thickens throughout the afternoon. By the time we hike out and navigate back to Enterprise, Oregon, the skies are so smoky that we realize we made a sound decision. Not all is lost; it’s a perfect time to enjoy a post-hike brew at Terminal Gravity Brew Pub in Enterprise. The brew pub offers a variety of beers and quaint seating in their eclectic garden setting. As the smoke settles into the mountains making them barely visible, we raise our glasses to toast the weather we enjoyed and to not tempting fate. We wander down the road to Wallowa Lake State Park and secure their last remaining tent site due to the crowds gathered for the annual Bronze, Blues and Brews Festival in Joseph, Oregon. After a cleansing swim in Wallowa Lake, it’s time to head into Joseph to peruse
the gift shops and grab a bite on the patio at Embers Restaurant and Pub. Joseph offers trendy shops and restaurants, and is rich in Native American history. The real beauty of the Wallowas is that you don’t have to enjoy hiking to experience the mountains. The mountains rise nearly 6,000 ft. straight up from the valleys. You can enjoy being a tourist or a trekker in a place like the Wallowas. Near the State Park,
road doesn’t aggravate my stomach as much driving it in the daylight. I spend a good deal of time on the way to Lewiston contemplating my next trip to the Wallowas. It’s 98 degrees, so I propose a swim stop at Hell’s Gate State Park. The guard spots our Idaho State Park Pass on the windshield and waves us through. We spend hours alternately swimming laps in the swim area and soaking up the sun on the sandy beach of the Snake River, while a diverse arrangement of boats parade up and down the river. We pack up after a heated underwater handstand competition and head for just the place to satisfy our hunger, Lewiston style. We stop at Effie Burger on the main drag heading through town. Effie Burger is one of those mystifying places, an iconic local staple, a tourists’ box to tick off their to-do list when visiting the city. If you have been to Effie Burger, rest assured, we split one monster-sized burger between the three of us, and still don’t conquer it. Satisfied, we return to the car and head north.
We chase the light, trying to capture and record the beauty of this place, in this moment. a tram ascends tourists 3,700 feet up to the top of Mt. Howard, an 8,000+ ft. peak. The tram ride offers views of the blue waters of Wallowa Lake and the Wallowa Valley, where Chief Joseph and his people spent their summers. In the morning after coffee, we reluctantly head home. The circuitous
At 7:00 p.m., I power my phone back on, re-entering reality as we roll in to Coeur d’Alene. I don’t do so begrudgingly, but refreshed and thankful for the weekend’s escape. After all, we were lucky enough to spend a weekend in Switzerland… the Little Switzerland of America, that is. See you on the trail. N

A Curve On Contemporary
C
onstructed by Campbell & Campbell and designed by JMA Architecture, this UltraModern home turned Contemporary Northwest when a new home owner came into the picture. The new owner appreciated the contemporary feel of the original design, but wanted it to have a Northwest ambiance as well. Much of this was accomplished through the use of natural wood and stone, offering a pallet of beautiful, warm northwest color. One major, and unique element of this home is the curved interior hall and art wall. Exterior windows along this hall allow the art to be visible from outdoors as one approaches the home’s main entrance. This curved hall sets a theme that flows throughout the home, offering shapely highlights, and exciting features to the design and overall layout.

When You Can Tram? A top one of Hayden Lake’s north shores is a community of fine custom homes named The Falls at Hayden Lake. True to its name, a 100 ft. waterfall cascades over a natural basalt cliff to a community park at its base. And below the park, the community dock is located. The question then remains; what is the safest, most accommodating approach for residents and guests to reach the park and dock without a climbing harness or hundreds of stairs?

The answer came in the form of a Tram. The two year project cost hundreds on thousands, but the result is spectacular. This railtraveling transport boasts a selfleveling cab that seats a whopping sixteen, allowing passengers to travel comfortably to one of three depots along its route. The luxurious interior of the cab was designed and built by the folks at StanCraft, assuring that guests travel in style. Despite its unique quality, it manages, quite nicely, to maintain the ‘national park’ theme found throughout The Falls at Hayden Lake community.

Tebo’s Bright Idea A
s evidenced by the unique light systems, and the number and size of the magnificent windows throughout the Tebo residence, there was a great deal of attention paid to the lighting of the interior of this home. The kitchen was no different; however, the process took a surprising turn when it came to the lighting above the bar. Inspired by the design proposed by the architect, Pat Tebo turned to his own architectural knowledge and experience.
“Element Architecture came up with a nice design,” says Tebo, “but I was concerned about the cost and weight [of the fixture]. I wanted something as airy as possible, without posts to hold it up.” The outcome was a self-designed, soffit-like structure. Supported at one end by an interior wall, and at the other by thin cables anchored to the ceiling above, the design offers the unobstructed, ‘airy’ feel and appearance Tebo was hoping for. N

P
erhaps you’re familiar with the peach orchards near Nampa, Idaho. It’s possible you’ve taken your family there to glean after the initial harvest. You may recall climbing a ladder into the top branches and squinting against the summer sun as you stretched forth your hand to pluck a blushing orb of golden deliciousness from the tree. The temptation may have been too great, and you were powerless to resist taking a bite. You wipped your mouth with your sleeve, as sweet juice dripped from your chin. Clearly, this was the best peach you’d ever tasted, and you took another bite, and another until, finally, to your dismay, you realized you’d eaten the entire peach. And now you’re wondering when you might be able
to take the time to get back there. I mean, peaches don’t grow in North Idaho, right? Wrong. According to Jason Rex of Scratch restaurant in Coeur d’Alene, peaches grow just fine in North Idaho. In fact, you can grow them in your back yard. “There’s no secret,” says Jason, who
300 fresh peaches per tree. His only advice is to be sure your trees are watered and fed appropriately. And more water equals bigger fruit. Jason uses his peaches at his restaurant in a multitude of flavorful ways. He suggests using home grown peaches for sauces, cobblers, and ice cream. “I made a lot of cobbler this year,” he says. He also recommends grilling them with a good, firm white fish, or pork loin. He recently grilled peaches with a nice fillet of sturgeon.

The Goblet

S
quatting is an essential and functional movement that we perform daily. Squat exercises have proven to help prevent injury, boost sports performance, tone lower body and abs, and maintain good balance and mobility. This exercise is a great way to work your quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, adductors, calves and even abs. They can be done almost anywhere, and all you need is your own body weight. You can do them in sets, or simply hold the squat position for a certain amount of time. Increase the challenge by
increasing the number of reps per set, adding weight, or even including a jump at the top of each repetition.
The Basic Squat
is performed by standing comfortably with feet about shoulder width apart. Lower yourself by reaching back with your glutes and hinging at the hips. Be sure to keep your weight on your heels (do not rock onto your toe). Chest stays up, back straight and strong, and make sure your knees track with your toes (don’t let the knees collapse inward). Lower your body until your thighs are parallel with the floor. Remember to drive through the heels when coming up out of the squat.
The Sumo or Plié Squat
The Basic
is performed with a slightly wider stance than the basic squat, with toes facing out. Slowly bending at the knees, lower the body until legs are parallel to the floor. Remember to keep chest up, back straight, abdominals engaged, and keep your weight on the heels.
The Sumo or Plié
The Goblet Squat is performed by standing with feet shoulder width apart and turning feet slightly out. Keep your body weight on your heels, and start lowering your body while pushing your hips back and down. Move your hips before bending knees and lowering. Keep chest up and try to get elbows between knees. This is a deep squat; think of trying to sit on your heels while keeping your heel on the ground. N

hat do you think of when you hear the word “paradise?” For me it’s warm, turquoise waters gently rolling onto a powdery, white beach, and lots of swaying palms in view— coconut palms that is. Whatever your image might be, we can all agree that paradise is harmonious and euphoric. Now, if paradise were a food, wouldn’t it make sense that it would have to come from such a place? It’s wondrous and exciting that nature, in all her brilliance, created a superfood that is so powerful and beneficial, so rich and delicious, and packaged all of this goodness into the hard brown sphere we call the coconut.
While history tells that island peoples have been cracking coconuts, and benefitting from their healing and nutritional properties for thousands of years, here in the west we’re just starting to catch the coconut wave. We’ve all noticed the current coconut product frenzy as everything coconut, from butters and beverages, to flours and pasta, have popped up on retailers’ shelves across the country. As a wife and mother I feel it is my duty to educate myself on the best possible sources of nutrition; as a chef, a crucial part of my success is making sure that my healthy creations dance la samba on your taste buds while NOT increasing your pant size. Enter coconut oil. When coconut flesh is pressed, coconut oil flows. Cold-pressed virgin coconut oil is one of the most beneficial foods available. It’s a saturated fat (that’s why it is a solid
at room temperature) meaning that it is very stable when heated which makes it ideal for medium to high temperature cooking. For those of us who crave the tastes of the tropics, we love that light, subtly sweet, coconutty flavor the oil lends to soups, stir-frys, smoothies, and even popcorn and oatmeal. For those who are not crazy about the flavor, but still want to reap the benefits of this wonderful oil, just add a pinch of salt to it before adding additional ingredients and the taste of coconut will dissipate. A good quality coconut oil that is not refined, deodorized or bleached may not be the lowest cost option available, but with a shelf life of almost five years, perhaps buying a larger quantity at a wholesale price could fit the bill. Still not convinced? Consider this: the main ingredient in coconut oil is lauric acid which is a medium-chain fatty acid that’s unique to coconut oil (50% lauric acid) and human breast milk (6% lauric acid). Lauric acid is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and antiinflammatory; it combats infection and yeast. In other words, it will do amazing things for your immune system. Additionally, coconut oil is known to boost metabolism and brain function, it can suppress hunger, boost energy, and may lower LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) while increasing HDL cholesterol (the good kind). Some studies even show that it helps burn belly fat. WOW! Sounds like nutritional paradise to me. When cooking with coconut oil, you simply substitute it for whichever
other oil you are used to cook with or that a recipe may call for. The general rule of thumb for baking with coconut oil, rather than with butter or shortening, is to substitute equal parts. The results are light and moist muffins, cakes, breads and pastries. I recently enjoyed (REALLY enjoyed) a vegan chocolate pie made on the flakiest crust I’ve ever had; it was made with, you guessed it, coconut oil with the addition of ground and toasted coconut flakes. MMM! You might try stirring a bit into your tea or coffee (I like to emulsify my hot herbal tea by putting it in the blender on low speed and slowly drizzling a couple of teaspoons of melted coconut oil in). And, of course, coconut oil is a perfect start to a heavenly curry.
There are a myriad of ways to incorporate coconut oil to your daily diet. As with all things, consistency and moderation are key to truly benefiting from this super gift of nature. You can even massage it onto your skin after a warm bath or shower, or use a little in your hair to make it silky soft. Internally or externally, coconut oil will do wonders for you, and your body will love you for it. It’s nostalgia at its finest, and it takes me back to my youth.
I
think it’s a bit of the Old West,” says Ron, as the scent of horses and hay, the sound of cattle in the distant pasture brings on a rush of memories, long forgotten dreams, desires and ambitions left unrealized. It’s nostalgia at it’s finest, and it takes me back to my youth. I’m visiting Ron and Shelley Rosenberger at their ranch – Rocking R Cattle Company – and it’s difficult for me to stay focused on our conversation. Inside, I’m fighting a powerful urge to hop the fence, swing onto the back of one of those horses, and ride off into the timberlined sunset. At least that’s how I’d always imagined it. Truth be told,
I’m not much of a horseman, but that has never smothered the desire for the lifestyle. The earliest memory I have of myself – I must have been 4 years old – I’m sitting on a handmade, hand painted rocking horse in Pinehurst, Idaho. Then, at age 5, I remember galloping around the living room on all fours as my father played his guitar while he sang his songs of the Rocky Mountains and of growing up as a country boy and cowboy in Idaho. It seems I was rarely without my pearl handled six-guns or my red, felt cowboy hat. You see, my father was a horseman, as was his father before him. Grandpa Jake was a

GER’S cattle rancher down around Potlatch for a time, and his father before him ranched over into Montana. Ranching is in the bloodline, and as with many such passions, it was passed on to me as well; though I never had the opportunity to live it aside from buckin’ bales on occasion, and riding a horse now and then. I often dreamt of being a cowboy though, of riding out across the prairies on my buckskin mare, duster flapping in the breeze. I’d have a .357 at my hip, a lever action rifle in close reach, and my bedroll tied behind the saddle. I’d find a good pair of cowboy boots, and the perfect hat. I imagined myself as the man from Snowy River. I wanted to be a combination

I longed for that life: to join the cattle drive from Lonesome Dove, to ride alongside Gus McCrae and Captain Woodrow Call, to lay out under the stars and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of cattle, and horses, and a crackling campfire. I longed for the smell of leather, and dust, and sweat; what a life it would be. I’ve only just met the Rosenberger’s, but as we talk, I realize I truly know these people. They’re practically kin. In the 1980’s Ron took over what was once the family dairy farm and
began ranching feeder cattle. In 1995, Ron and Shelley went to registered cattle. Their operation now winters about 100 head of registered Angus cows, on approximately 700 total acres, and feeds out between 6500 and 7000 bales of hay each year. Shelley speaks fondly of her 4-H days as a youth, and her desire to continue to support the organization. They raised two children on the ranch, both of them 4-H’ers. It’s not only taught them the value of hard work, but it created a powerful familial bond and sense of commitment. Says Shelley, “You’re closer when you have a common bond.” Their son,

The Prosperous Pantser

n the world of writers, there are two kinds: Plotters, and Pantsers. Those who pour days, months, or even years into figuring up just the right outlines for their stories are called Plotters. And then there are those who have a more fly-by-theseat-of-your-pants approach. These are called Pantsers. Rebecca Zanetti is a Pantser. And it doesn’t take her saying so for one to see it. Her Pantser approach bleeds into more than just the writing of her New York Times and USA Today Bestselling romance novels. You see, being a Pantser is not the same as recklessness. It’s not a lack of logic or
rationale. It’s seeing opportunities for what they are—especially when you didn’t see them coming—and taking advantage of them. It’s about making calculated, intelligent decisions regarding seemingly spontaneous events, or chance circumstances.

“It was a truly horrible book,” Zanetti insists. “It was a Young Adult book featuring demigods, and it was truly terrible.”

ZANETTI when she mentions receiving a formal rejection letter from another agent shortly after her novel was already in production. Zanetti hit the New York Times Bestselling Authors list in less than two years after publishing her first novel. She recently finished edits on book 10 of her Dark Protector series, slotted to hit the bookshelves December of this year. She has published 15 novels to date, and is currently contracted for 9 more with releases scheduled through 2016 with her current three publishers. As for living the life of a successful writer, Zanetti says she enjoys
the enthusiasm of her fans and is often inspired by their stories. “The book signings are rewarding and exhausting,” she says, “and when somebody has stood in line for four hours to get a book, it’s definitely humbling.” Then she adds, “And I’m not going to lie. Being paid for making stuff up is a lot of fun, too.” Her family is still her number one priority, however. She speaks very highly of them and their support. It’s not uncommon to find Zanetti in her vehicle, typing away on her laptop while her children enjoy basketball practice. She feels especially lucky to have the encouragement of her

husband, Tony. “He’s incredibly supportive,” she says. “How many husbands would’ve been just fine with their wife quitting a lucrative job as a lawyer to write paranormal romances – especially with two kids and a regular student loan payment due?” As successful as Zanetti has become in her writing career, she hasn’t forgotten how much others inspired her when she was young; she makes sure to pay some of that forward. She speaks with fondness of her high school creative writing teacher, Mr. Ruskovich. “He was great,” she says. “He was a very good teacher, very creative, and fun.” Zanetti laughs as she recalls being assigned to describe an Oreo. “To this day I remember that,” she says, “and I was 14. So, yeah, he definitely influenced me.” – (That makes at least two of us).

To other aspiring writers she smiles, a mischievous glint in her eye, “Don’t be afraid to let the crazy out,” she says. “That’s where writing gets interesting.” Rebecca Zanetti happily continues to write from her home in Hayden, Idaho, often sitting on her back deck in a comfortable shirt and yoga pants, instead of a lawyerly suit. The Many Faces of
SUE ANDER S O
n a wall in the front room of the Blackwell Hotel hangs an oil painting by Sue Anderson titled Secrets. It’s the face of a woman with auburn hair, and it’s sexy. Her features are graceful, attractive. But there’s something more, something deeper – perhaps it’s in the tilt of her head, or the near-smile – that speaks of strength, of confidence, that says she knows something I do not. I stand at a distance, taking in the entire image, experiencing the piece, when I recognize there is life in her eyes. So much so, that I feel a sudden connection to this woman on
the canvas that I cannot explain, and I am forced to keep my emotions in check or risk creating an extremely awkward moment for my hostess. There are more of Anderson’s pieces to see yet, and although I’d both love and hate for the tour to end here, I clear my throat and ask to see the others. It is clear in Andersons many faces that these are not merely women to be admired for their surface attractiveness or sex appeal. They speak of empowerment, intelligence, passion, and individuality. “Women
are beautiful,” says Anderson, “but they are strong, too. It’s important to me to show that.”
Sue began creating a name for herself at a very young age. In the 1st Grade her classmates began requesting that she draw Disney characters for them to take home. Although she remembers drawing from the age of three, “It was in the 1st grade,” she says, “that I realized I actually had talent.” Although her years at Lake City High School do not hold her fondest of memories, her art teachers treated

I once faced down a mountain lion with a knife. I’d been living in the Clearwater National Forest about 5 months by then. My days consisted of beautiful sunrises over timber covered mountains, drinking from fresh water springs, and explorative treks that could take all day. I truly felt I was in ‘God’s country.’ I had no guns, only a couple of knives, but I’d come to feel that that was enough. 74 NSPIREMAGAZINE.COM

verywhere I went, I did so shirtless - human flesh is even quieter than animal hair through the brush. I learned to walk silently, and to be completely aware of my surroundings. I can’t count the number of animals I snuck up on. I had no fear in those days. Nature was a part of me. I was just another form of wildlife, and I wanted to never leave; not only to never return to civilization, but to get far enough from it, that I might forget it even existed. 20 years later, I dread camping.
We head east on I-90 to Big Creek. From there, we head south, keeping on a narrow, but well maintained gravel road to the top of the mountains, then, drop down the other side into a little place called Lake Elsie. Of course, I recall living in the woods, but that was long ago. The wilderness often seems more foreign than familiar to me now. Where I used to challenge wild dogs that
entered my camp in the pitch black of night, I now jump at the sound of squirrels in the undergrowth, and worry that if my cell phone doesn’t get service, I’ll miss some important call. I won’t even begin to explain the extent of my ridiculous paranoia of bears. I never sleep anymore when I’m camping. We’re here for my wife’s family reunion. Her sister is up from Texas,
and they all thought it would be nice to get out. Although I love her family—and I’m not just saying that because they’ll read this story— truth be told, I am not excited to be here. Unfortunately, I think it’s probably obvious. At home is a pile of work waiting for me, and I’m already behind. Plus, I’ve already got two missed calls from numbers I don’t recognize, and I’m completely unable

kids are out on the lake with as many cousins as can fit in, or be towed behind, the fleet of watercraft. My wife paddles off in the canoe with her niece and sister, leaving me on the shore. She asked, but I declined. They all look so small against the backdrop of near vertical, rock strewn slopes, and steep tree covered peaks. Their laughter echoes loud off the mountains and through the campground. I smile to hear my children, despite myself. But there’s a quieter voice mingled with theirs. It whispers down through the trees and over the water until it hits me with force. ‘Come’, it says to me alone. I hesitate, then turn and walk back to camp.

t times throughout the year, Lake Elsie is stocked with
trout. My son has found a discarded hook and a bit of line. He’s crafted a makeshift rod, and I watch as he kayaks about the lake trying his luck, not because he’s actually trying to catch anything—he hasn’t even baited the hook—but because it gives him a reason to be out there. As I look on, it’s as if I’m watching myself, and when the voice calls again, I simply cannot resist; I strip off my shirt, leap into an empty kayak and paddle out to meet him. An hour later, I’m in the icy water, clinging to the side of his kayak, and apologizing to a trout as I attempt to free it from an abandoned lure by chewing through the line on the hook it has swallowed. It’s a terrible way for a fish to die—pointlessly trapped in it’s own environment with no hope

of escape or survival – and I have to try. The poor trout doesn’t survive. It’s impossible to say how long it’d been fighting. I feel sorry, and my son is heartbroken. He’d rather the creature lived, and we had a happier tale to tell. He decides to have him for supper, so as not to disrespect the fish by leaving him to rot. He takes the fish to a nice place near a stream, where he can clean it with respect. I watch for a moment, then leave him to his tears. I’m happy for him. ‘Come’, I seem to hear, ‘Remember who you are’.

he sky brightens long before the sun peeks over the mountains and onto the water. I open my eyes. Above me, through the screen of the tent’s roof, a goldfinch flits about among the high branches of a ponderosa pine. I’ve slept through the entire night. No fear of bears, no walking anyone to the restroom in the dark, not even an uncomfortable root beneath my bed. I feel wonderful. No thoughts of work or cell phones assail me. I only imagine how glassy the lake must be right now, and wonder if there’s a kayak available for me. Later, I’m planning to lead my wife on an exploration to the upper lake. But for now, I’ll explore the water.

he upper lake turns out to not be much of a find. But as I lead us quietly through the unknown with a couple of knives hanging from my belt, I begin to feel like myself again. It’s not like some big realization or lightning strike experience, but more of a warm assurance; I have finally come home.

f you have not yet been to any of North Idaho’s many alpine lakes, we think it’s time you go. Here are a couple of our favorites, though the decision was difficult. We based our conclusion on location. These three alpine lakes all have access roads that connect to I-90 between the towns of Cataldo and Mullan, Idaho. That means these access roads are all within a 40-minute drive from
Coeur d’Alene and close to the Silver Valley. Remember to bring “Denise Lundy’s 10 Essentials for Hiking” from our 2014 Summer/Fall issue. Also, there are no dumpsters on site at most, if not all, of our alpine lakes. If you pack it in, you pack it out. Please come prepared to keep our beautiful wilderness clean. N

H
arry Bashaw is a humble, polite, respectable young man. He’s quiet, reserved – at least when he’s not on the slopes, blasting through the powder on his twin-tips – the kind of guy you want to hang out with, just because. He’s pleasant, likeable. He’s a smart guy, too; he does well in school and has a plan for the future. And, yes, that plan involves skiing. If there’s a moment when Bashaw is not enjoying the scenic view from atop the ski slope, it’s either because he’s got too much powder in his face to see it, or he’s in the middle of working on a killer new trick. “I’ve skied everywhere in the northwest,” he says with some pleasure. He’s skied resorts as far east as Colorado, and even managed to take a trip to Whistler, BC. You’ll find Harry on the slopes and terrain parks of Schweitzer, and Silver Mountain some 50 odd days a year. But that was not always the case. “When I got interested in skiing, I started watching videos,” Bashaw explains. “I really wanted to try it, but I didn’t actually go until the last day of the season. And it just clicked; I
could just do it, somehow.” Amazing, right? What’s more impressive is that that was only 4 years ago. He smiles and laughs at the thought. “Yeah, I haven’t been skiing very long.” He’s a Senior in high school this year with tentative plans for college in Colorado, where he’ll also try to break into the ski scene, hopeful that he’ll land a few sponsors. With his talent, this shouldn’t be a problem. Last year – during his fourth year of skiing – Bashaw decided he’d enter the competitive scene, locally. He surprised himself and others with a 2nd and 3rd place podium in a couple Rail Jams, and keeping in the top 5 at 3 other venues. He’s modest about his ability, though. Although it comes pretty easy to him, he’s quite aware that he’s only got a few years under his belt. “I didn’t do very well in the slope style comps,” he says. Something about linking the jumps got to him, but he looks forward with eagerness at all he has to learn; that’ll take many more days on the slopes. Like all successful athletes, passion is a huge part of his success. For Harry, this passion is not so much
about competition as it is about the lifestyle and companionship found on the slopes among likeminded powder junkies. It’s about working hard and pulling off new tricks. “My goal every time I’m learning a trick at the terrain park,” he says, “is to be able to do it when I’m out just skiing around.” Bashaw gestures out the window, taking in the world. “Everything I look at makes me think about skiing,” he says, “like, if I look at a rail, or if I look at a mountain as I’m driving down the road, I think ‘Hey, I bet I could ski that.’ It makes you willing to work all summer so you can ski all winter.” Harry doesn’t use the words ‘Pro Athlete’ or ‘Olympian.’ He’s too modest for that. But he’s certainly got the character, passion, and talent to accomplish whatever he chooses. So, we shouldn’t be surprised when we see his name, one day, and we say to the person next to us, “Hey, I know that guy.” N

arie Anderson welcomes us inside, and we are immediately greeted by a black bear, a buffalo, a mountain lion, and a raccoon, all beautifully presented and preserved by a talented taxidermist who clearly knows his work. We’re here for a photo shoot and interview. Benjamin Powell, excited by the prospects, gets right to work. Karie keeps us company while Jeff get’s cleaned up. He’s quit work early today to meet with us. Ask Jeff Anderson how he’s doing and he’ll smile and say, “Oh, not bad for an old guy.” Of course, I’ve got a Grandmother who is nearly 103 (perhaps a story for another time). Jeff and Karie only are in their 70’s,
so that doesn’t exactly qualify as old to me. However, I’m still impressed at their level of health and activity for a couple their age. If you couldn’t tell by our welcoming party, Jeff and Karie Anderson are hunters.
Jeff and Karie have been hunting together for the past 10 years. Jeff started when he was 12. “Had to be 12 to get a hunting license,” he jokes. He’d certainly have started sooner if it were allowed. When asked what it is he likes about hunting, he replies, “I guess, everything. You don’t have people around like you do in the city. You get to eat what you shoot. I get to play with guns while I’m doing it, and it’s pretty challenging. But,” he smiles again, “the fun ends when
you pull the trigger.” It seems it’s all work after that. Karie, slightly less eager to hunt, started when she met Jeff, before they married. Now, she explains, “My husband hunts. He likes to have me with him. So I go.” Her favorite part,

she says, “is coming home.” Clearly, a woman who hunts with her man, loves her man. Karie doesn’t just go to watch, though. Perched above their television in the living room, looms a beautifully posed mountain lion that she tagged on a hunting trip in the mountains of Utah just this year. It turned out to be quite the demanding trip, too, as they had to strap on the snow shoes to make the hike. Perhaps, it’s not something she’d care to do again, though she was up to the challenge. Jeff and Karie haven’t always kept everything they shoot. Not long ago (July 2013), they embarked on a hunting trip to Africa. Jeff pulls out a binder full of pictures from the safari. The variety of wildlife is astounding and beautiful. And their appreciation for that beauty is very clear as they describe their experience. Although they were there to hunt, they were also there to serve, supplying the native community with over 8,000 pounds of fresh meat. Jeff made a second trip in 2014.
So, what do the Anderson’s do to stay fit enough to go gallivanting around in the mountains of Idaho and the savannas of Africa? “I work,” Jeff says. “I thought I was going to retire,” he continues, explaining this was his plan when he moved to North Idaho in 1992. He laughs, “Now, I’m just tired.” He’s still putting in some hours on odd-job construction projects, though he gets to pick and choose these days. Karie explains that she works out 5 days a week. But that’s not all. Jeff and Karie are dedicated, avid dancers. Karie started dancing in San Diego in 1978. Jeff began in 1960 when his parents invited him to come with them. He thought he would hate it, but he’s been dancing ever since. These days, Jeff and Karie dance together at least twice a week for about 2 hours per night. They enjoy both Round Dancing, and Square Dancing. They even stopped in Oklahoma City for a three day dance expo on their way to Africa.
“I like the clothes,” Karie says, regarding the dance expo. “Jeff always comes home with something when he hunts. I always come home with something too.” “You can’t eat clothes,” Jeff teases. “But I can look mighty good in them,” Karie replies. Jeff’s grins and shoots her a sly wink. They both laugh. He won’t argue with that fact. Karie says the benefits of dancing are that “it helps with posture, and thinking, and working together.” Jeff doesn’t say so, but I imagine if I asked him, he’d say the benefit of being a good dancer is that you can get the pretty girls to go hunting with you. Heavenly

I
believe talents, generally speaking, come from above. I also believe everyone has at least one, and that they ought to be discovered and practiced, and used to bless the lives of others. Often these talents are subtle, perhaps even unknown to the individual, and sometimes are hard won. It just may be in some instances, our talents are so unknown to us that we need a little help finding them. Or perhaps we just need someone to point us in the right direction. For Akiane Kramarik, that direction came by way of heavenly vision. Akiane says she began having, what she can only describe as, visions of heaven when she was 4 years old. She recalls feeling incapable of expressing herself, of relating her experiences to her
parents. Then she started drawing. By age 5, she was painting. She began expressing herself through her art, and explaining to her family and those around her the visions she had been having. To her parent’s surprise, Akiane appeared to be a child prodigy painter. Even more surprising, was the fact that she was seeing
heaven; her parents were both selfproclaimed atheists. They’d never discussed faith, or any form of spirituality in their home. They’d certainly never discussed Heaven and visions. This amazing talent, these seemingly divine experiences, were all Akiane. And if her verbal descriptions weren’t enough, her

prodigious talent certainly convinced them. This was all for real. At the age of 8, Akiane painted a portrait of Christ entitled, Prince of Peace, and began getting worldwide attention as a self-taught master painter, a prodigy. She’s been on television interviews around the world. She now has original pieces worth over one million dollars, and she’s recently spent the last year in Australia. Prior to that, she was right here in North Idaho. Despite her fame, however, Akiane will be the first to say she doesn’t paint for money or attention. “I paint,” she says, and her words seem to echo with the voices of so many masters before her, “because it’s in my blood. It’s who I am and who I always want to be.” Akiane established early in her career that she would use her talent to inspire others, and she has certainly held to that. Her paintings and story have inspired people across the globe. She often spoke of her desire for others to find and do what they love most, and her hope that her art might encourage that. At age 10 Akiane declared, “Everything I do has a meaning of spirituality.” Visit her website and
you’ll see what this means. Many of her paintings are accompanied by a spiritual explanation, or a thought on her experience with a particular piece. And often there is an original Akiane Kramarik poem attached. Here are a few of my favorites: The Light Bear-ers; “…is an allegory painting showing different ways people respond to God. The moral of the painting is this: do not run away from light, do not be angry with light, do not fight, or think of yourself, otherwise, you will miss the light completely. Look up to God to live, and God will provide.” (Akiane, age 9, 2004) On My Knees; “When we are alone in prayer or meditation, we reach peace, joy, love and wisdom. That intimate time nourishes us for eternity. Each of us walks through our own spiritual journey. But before we walk, before we climb, before we fly, we need to be on our knees.” (Akiane, age 11, 2006) Akiane is older now. Her visions come less frequently. Although this frightened her a little at first— “When we experience visions or
dreams, we start craving their exotic experiences.”—she explains that she knew it would eventually happen, she’d been told in a vision when she was still quite young. However, there are many things Akiane has learned that will continue to be a large part of her work. “I learned,” she says, “to respect and appreciate our earthly life: so remarkable and brief.” She’s also come to understand that by combining life experience with visions, dreams, and imagination in her work, she opens new doors as an artist. We can expect to continue to see inspiring work from this young woman. “My relationship with God is personal and profound. My own spirituality has never changed.” I can’t say that Akiane’s visions of heaven were an indispensible piece of some great divine plan. I can’t say they were meant to change the religious views of her parents— though, they did. However, I can say that, if nothing else, they helped her discover her amazing talents, that they have influenced the lives of many around the world, and they have influenced my own.
