Summer camp fun for kids “Mom, I’m so bored!”

Kids love the summer, but even when the sun is shining and there’s no homework for months, they can get bored, quickly.

That’s why it’s never too early to start thinking about summer camps.

ARTISTS FOR KIDS Artists for Kids’ popular Summer Visual Arts Camp runs from July 2-6 (ages 1318; artist in residence: Tiko Kerr) and July 7-12 (ages 8-12; artist in residence: Vanessa Lam) in the Paradise Valley, near Brackendale. Keep in touch with kids at camp Summer camp is an exciting way for children to spend their extended vacations from the classroom. Camps cater to various interests, including sports, crafts and even technological hobbies.

■ LEARN CAMP RULES. The camp will likely provide information regarding correspondence. Camps may permit parents to send one-way emails and regular mail, but limit campers to handwritten letters only.

Determine if mobile phones are allowed or should be left at home.

Knowing the rules can help parents and kids plan accordingly.

Children who attend overnight camps may spend several nights away from home. Some kids take this in stride, while others, possibly away from home for the first time, may experience some homesickness. Staying in touch while the kids are at camp can help alleviate fears and show children their parents care.

■ PACK CORRESPONDENCE SUPPLIES. Send kids to camp with fun papers, stickers, pens, and other crafty items. This way they’ll be inspired to write home once or twice. Provide brief lessons on how to address an envelope for campers who may not know how.

Camps now handle communication issues differently than they might have when today’s parents were campers. While it once common for campers to send handwritten letters or short missives home to mom and dad, technology has changed that. Today’s campers may have access to email accounts, or they even may be allowed to bring mobile phones along. This can facilitate communication, but it also may take away from the camping experience.

Parents need to find a balance between what might be too little or too much contact with campers. After all, camp is kids’ chance to grow independent for a few days or weeks.

■ CHECK BLOGS AND TEXTS. Some camps may blog about campers’ progress, post information on social media or send out mass texts. These messages can reassure parents that their youngsters are doing just fine.

Figure out which tech options are available from camp administrators.

■ SEND A CARE PACKAGE. Treat the campers to some supplies from home. Pack camp-approved snacks and other reminders of home. Be sure to include enough for the entire cabin and your son or daughter will be the camp star.

■ EXPECT SOME SILENCE. If camp is going well and campers’ days are fun-filled, they may be too busy for daily correspondence. Parents may get nervous when they don’t routinely see or hear from their children, but chances are everything is going swimmingly.

The camp experience is often harder on parents than children, as campers have their friends and activities to keep them busy.

Stepping out of the classroom and into the wild for a few weeks during the summer might be just what a student is looking for before heading back inside and sitting behind a desk.

From spending time outdoors and climbing trees to dipping a hand into a table of paint, there is usually a camp suited for everybody. Whether children already have a vested interest or if they want to explore a new area of expertise, there is a vast amount of activities and camps to choose from each year.

Summer camps come in many different shapes, forms and sizes. They range from art camps, religious, sports, space, aviation, musical theatre and specialinterest camps.

The benefits of participating in a summer camp include making new friends, learning how to become a better leader or simply perfecting a vested skill.

Today, it is easy to lose touch with nature as everything has become more electronic and mobile. The roots in the wild have been lost to the need to interact over social media and on electronic devices.

Breaking out of that pattern and participating in a camp for a few weeks can help kids step away from their phones for a while and interact with one another through the spoils of being surrounded by what they are most passionate about.

During regular school months, students often don’t find enough time to do the activities that they are truly interested in. These activities can include a specific sport, art or simply enjoying more time in the vast nature that the North Shore and greater country has to offer.

Young people are in their development years and introducing them to new experiences as much as possible can be a long term benefit, such as making them more confident in the workplace or giving them an idea of what they would like to pursue as a career when they are older.

Meeting new people from other places and making friends in the process is a key benefit to camps. Learning leadership skills or expanding an already existing skill and interest is what many children go home with after spending a few weeks immersed in camp activities.

A summer camp that is spent outdoors is able to throw kids back into nature, and with the breathtaking local and Canadian landscape, it opens up a world of opportunities to experience and appreciate the physical and mental benefits of being outdoors.

Physical activity and mental stimulation are important for development and for mental health. The world today is experiencing a rise in depression and anxiety in youth. Keeping a healthy, active lifestyle is a recommended way of combating some of the stressors of being a teenager.

Sport camps are more than just playing sports and staying active. It teaches the campers about leadership, good sportsmanship and how to be a part of a team. The sports can range from mountain biking, golfing, Frisbee and even skateboarding.

Learning more about the environment and how to preserve it is a part of doing an adventure camp in the summer. The activities can include adrenaline-packed events such as rock climbing, waterskiing, wilderness survival or a high ropes course.

Adventure camps combine risk taking with learning how to trust others, all the while keeping safety in mind. Often the camps are segregated into genders, 14 • Summer Camp Guide 2019

making boys’ summer camps or girls’ only camps available to parents and students.

Our Kids, established in 1997, is an online directory of schools, camps, activities and more. According to a study done by them a few years ago, 80 per cent of Canadians think that summer camps are important in helping children make friends “as well as acquire important skills in outdoor activities, sports and the arts.”

The study also found that 90 per cent of Canadians who themselves attended summer camps as children will send their own kids to summer camps.

Being immersed in arts for a few weeks during the summer break might be what certain students don’t get a chance for during the school year.

Art institutions hold camps for eager children to participate in, where they spend their time learning new skills or developing an already forming skill.

Camps include professional teachers or advisors leading the way in the specific fields that campers choose to participate in for the allocated times during the breaks. Volunteering time to a summer camp program can add benefit to a resume and it’s a useful way to build connections and get involved within the community.

No matter which summer camp you choose for your child, it has been shown that Canadians reap great benefits from these programs. It can be difficult to get back into the swing of things after a long break, but keeping kids engaged during their time off can help ease the transition and in turn, they end up learning and experiencing new skills they otherwise would not be exposed to.
