Dearest Members of the Class of 2021:

I’d like to talk to you about energy.

No, not nuclear energy – what is this, the ’80s?

– and not solar, or wind, or the battle over how we will power our civilizations in the decades to come without absolutely wrecking the planet for your children and grandchildren.

I mean – we definitely SHOULD talk about those things. And I know you already ARE talking about those things. I’ve seen you starting environmental clubs at your schools and marching at all the massive climate change rallies. Keep fighting against those who are actively engaged in burning the world, and never let anyone convince you our current collective comfort is more important than a future free of climate disaster.

But I’m now talking about a different type of energy. Personal energy. Human energy.

Specifically: your energy.

It’s fabulous.

As a community newspaper reporter I end up profiling a lot of young folks who are making their marks in the community in ways both big and small. This year in particular, with Grade 12 students facing unprecedented challenges, we sought out grads to find out how you were handling this monumental year in the midst of a global pandemic. And every time I spoke to one of you it was just … fantastic.

It wasn’t necessarily the things that you were saying – although I must say that you are a sharp, plugged-in bunch – but rather it was your Continued on page 4

You’ve survived and thrived during an unprecedented year Continued from page 3 energy. The energy of youth. The energy of optimism, and passion, and courage to go out and do something to make the world a better place despite outrageous obstacles.

Every time I spoke to a grad this year I came away energized by the conversation, whether I was sitting locked down in my makeshift bedroom office, or sitting locked down in my makeshift kitchen office.

There was the basketball player who laughed about her good fortune in having a younger sister who also played ball, giving her exactly one opponent she could face in true one-on-one games this year while still following all health restrictions.

“It’s getting harder now because she’s growing up and she’s now the same height as me,” she told me. “I can’t just shove her over, which is obviously upsetting.”

Love it!

There was the drama student who gave out some acting secrets – take a bunch of quick breaths just before jumping into a scene that is meant to take place with characters who have just done a bunch of running. Smart!

There was the soccer player who stayed fit while locked in a room during a mandatory two-week quarantine by doing “random boxing routines” that he found on YouTube.

Heck, just last week word came to us of a bunch of Handsworth “Congrats Grads” signs mysteriously appearing outside North Vancouver rival school Carson

Graham. Love that mischievous energy!

You’ve been through a Grade 12 year truly like no other, but you’ve come through it with your spirits intact. And it has certainly been a weird year. The fact that in the last few paragraphs I’ve casually mentioned things such as “global pandemic” and “mandatory two-week quarantine” seems almost normal now because we’ve been living it for more than a year, but no other grad class ever has faced such an unsettling and uncertain and sometimes downright scary set of circumstances for their final year of school.

And yet, here you are. Just look at all the beaming faces and positive messages spread throughout this special grad feature in the North Shore News. You found a way to survive and thrive while facing these challenges. And so many of you have not just looked out for yourselves but have continued to keep the community moving, putting yourselves in harm’s way by working those pandemic front-line positions at our shops and restaurants and grocery stores.

As health restrictions continue to loosen and you set out into the world beyond the walls of your high school, I implore you to take that energy and share it with everyone you encounter. Be the kid in the front row of class in your college courses who loves to get the conversation started. Be the youth sports coach that all the kids will absolutely adore because you are so cool, unlike boring old Coach Mom

Find your passion, and then spread it to anyone who will listen. Energy is contagious, in the best possible way.

it takes. You’ve earned it. And then go out and re-energize this world. We need it! You truly are the greatest resource we have.

Student film takes grad game Gotcha to the extreme ANDY PREST

A group of talented North Vancouver students tackled some tough subject matter and some even tougher COVID restrictions this year in making a feature film about a divisive annual grad event.

The game referred to as Gotcha has been around for more than a decade in North Vancouver, roping in Grade 12 students from across the district for some friendly – or some might say unfriendly – competition.

Here, in brief, is how it works.

Students pay an entry fee and are assigned an individual “target” – another student who has signed up for the game. As the weeks go on, the players must physically tag their targets in a public place.

The eliminated player’s target then becomes the next target of the person who tagged them.

Students cannot tag each other inside school or while they are at work. The last player in the game wins the pot, which can add up to more than $1,000.

Proponents of the game, including both parents and students alike, say that it is simple,

harmless fun — a unique way to bring grads together for an engaging and entertaining senior year competition.

But critics have voiced concerns over the years about the nature of the game, which they

say can involve antics ranging from embarrassing public displays to bullying and even to criminal behaviour.

In 2017, the North Vancouver School District went so far as to send out a warning about the

game. The rules, as they were enforced that year, allowed players to remain in the game after being tagged if they paid extra money or immediately stripped off their clothing after being tagged. That type of behaviour could lead to

charges of public nudity or worse, said school district officials, particularly if students were found to have taken or shared explicit photos of their classmates.

It’s Gotcha the game that is explored, and taken to the extreme, in Gotcha the movie, a 39-minute suspense thriller produced by the school district’s Digital Media Academy and the École Argyle Secondary drama department.

In the dark and sometimes creepy film, shot in large part at the old Argyle, before its demolition, the Gotcha game spins out of control with threats of violence echoing down the dim corridors of the school as students go on the hunt at night. There’s a bit of a Hunger Games feel to it all, and viewers are left wondering what is real and what is imagined as the heroes of the tale try to stay alive, both figuratively and literally.

Suspense thriller reveals ‘the metaphorical monster in all of us’ Continued from page 5 game unravels around them.

“I hope it conveys a message of anti-violence,” said Bigland about the film. “Kind of showing that it’s more important to have your friendships and the love of your friends and everyone you care about – love is more important than the violence and the fear and the trauma that we all see all the time in the media. What’s more important is the connections that we have with other people.”

Digital Media Academy teacher Chris Miller wrote the script and was heavily involved in the filmmaking process throughout, working with the students and editing the finished product.

He hopes the film opens up a conversation about Gotcha and bullying as well as the prevalence of violence in the entertainment industry.

“We were trying to run that sort of fine line of pointing the finger at violence and entertainment, but also using that suspense, that thrill to try to push that message,” said Miller. “Teens have this sort of unrealistic, invincibility complex.

And it really kind of clouds their judgment as they go through their last years of high school. … Not

every teenager is like this, but I think there is that sort of classic teenager mindset that ‘it won’t happen to me.’ And we wanted to say – this is obviously an extreme version of – what could go wrong?

Who’s the metaphorical monster in all of us?”

Aside from the message of the film, Miller also wanted to share with the world what a joy it was working with these talented young students, watching them jump into every aspect of the filmmaking process while following all health guidelines.

“I would say these are the most talented students I’ve experienced,” he said, adding that the COVID-19 restrictions were incredibly challenging for the cast and crew to navigate.

“It was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done,” he said. “And we did have to make sacrifices to the script because of COVID. But I’m really happy with what we finished with. … I really am glad that we were able to accomplish something for them that they can look back on and go, OK, that was tough, but we made a film. And we made a film that is now on the internet that anyone in the world can see.”
