Coquitlam teen dies at Lynn Canyon Cliff jumper slips into water before rescuers can reach him

It’s the first tragedy of the year in Lynn Canyon.

A teenager from Coquitlam is missing and presumed drowned after he slipped under the cold, swirling water Monday afternoon.

Rescuers from across the North Shore raced to the canyon around 4:30 p.m. Monday when witnesses first reported a person in distress just north of the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge.

“In spite of people warning him not to climb over there, he was going there to cliff jump. We’re not exactly sure what happened – whether he slipped or he chose a bad spot to jump,” said Sgt. Doug Trousdell, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. “He ended up on the cliff face, hanging there above the pool.”

According to police, the 18-year-old clung to a rock for about 30 minutes, before apparently giving in to fatigue and slipping under the water, never resurfacing. Rescuers were in the process of trying to lower an inflatable to him.

Attention all SeaBus and SkyTrain commuters: Your grace period is over.

TransLink will be closing all of its fare gates, starting on April 4 and the only way through will be with a Compass Card or Compass tickets.

The fare gate and smartcard system, imposed by former transportation minister Kevin Falcon in 2007, has been in testing since February.

“It’s going well,” said Jennifer Moreland, TransLink spokeswoman.

“Since then, we’ve done close to 50 successful SkyTrain gate closure demonstrations.”

Somebody up there doesn’t like you.

More than 40 North Shore commuters received distracted driving tickets last Wednesday after being caught using their smartphones behind the wheel by an undercover cop stationed in a cherry picker.

Officers from the West Vancouver Police Department and North Vancouver RCMP, along with ICBC staff set up a sting operation at the corner of Capilano Road and Marine Drive in the soaking rain in time for the afternoon rush hour. One of the offenders even waved, smarthphone in hand, to the undercover officer, according to the RCMP. “Most people were accepting of the fact they were in the wrong, realizing that someone had a bird’s eye view of

them made them feel a little sheepish. Some were in a bit of denial or questioning whether or not we could do that,” said Cpl. Richard De Jong, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.

Police handed out another 29 violation tickets for other offences, including one 24-hour suspension for driving under the influence of a drug.

A handful of drivers got warnings – including people who were talking hands-free but with two earbuds in the ears (only one earbud is allowed.)

A brave few tried unsuccessfully to talk their way out of the ticket. “We only give tickets to those who we actually have a visual sighting of (being) on their phone or texting. There’s no grey area when we pull them over,” De Jong added.

Despite the increased penalties and public awareness, the problem persists, according to Const. Jeff

Wood, West Vancouver police spokesman. “I get it. This is the smartphone era. If you find you can’t trust yourself, turn off the phone and put it in the back of the car,” he said.

If that’s not workable, Wood said, ask a passenger to do your texting for you, or pull over where it’s safe to do so. “It’s not worth it to actually drive your vehicle and be distracted while you’re looking at a smartphone or electronic device. You need to be paying attention to the road. Driving is a very hard task to do,” he said.

During a recent enforcement blitz, a West Vancouver officer ticketed a driver for using his phone while heading west through Taylor Way and Marine Drive. Thirteen minutes later, the same driver was back, still on his phone and was ticketed again. “Some people learn and some people don’t,” Wood said.

Metro tweaks water shortage response plan New restrictions will start sooner and last longer

North Shore homeowners may watch their lawns get a little browner this summer, following a recent adjustment to Metro Vancouver’s water shortage response plan.

Metro Vancouver recently amended the plan to avoid the drought conditions that led to Stage 3 water restrictions during last year’s parched summer.

Limits to lawn sprinkling will go into effect two weeks earlier and extend an additional two weeks. Restrictions will start on May 15, previously June 1, and end on Oct. 15, previously Sept. 30.

Another major change to the plan allows pressure washing for esthetic purposes under Stage 2 restrictions. Businesses like car washes were able to survive the Stage 2 restrictions because they recycle the water they use, said Darrell Mussatto, chairman of the Metro Vancouver’s utilities committee and mayor of the City of North Vancouver.

Previous to the change, pressure washing could only be done for health or safety, or to prep an area for painting.

“The reason was we really didn’t want to put people out of business. It was one area

that stood out as having the greatest impact, that had a chance of really effecting business or putting them out of business,” said Mussatto.

To further address the problems faced in 2015, Metro Vancouver staff are also looking into water metering.

White Rock and West Vancouver both use the system to monitor their water consumption and the meters have proven successful in curbing how much is used in those municipalities. But the costly solution isn’t the best fit for every area of the region, said Mussatto, who believes that influencing behaviour is a better angle to approach the issue from.

“The study is going to look at what’s the best way to influence people’s consumption

at the least cost. You don’t want to end up having to pay a whole lot of money when you can pay less to change behaviour,” said Mussatto.

Offering incentives for low-flush toilets, efficient sprinkler heads, and stepping up enforcement are ways that Mussatto hopes the region can promote water conservation without resorting to the expensive alternative of water meters.

“You have to put the system in and it can cost anywhere from $400 to $1,400 a house, and it costs between $40 and $60 per year to measure and to bill. Is that the best use for our funds? That is part of the big study we’re doing over the next couple of years,”

Promoting mindful consumption is another tactic Metro is utilizing with their Water Wagon that travels to public and community events during the region’s dry season.

“We’ll set it up and we have a team that goes along with that. They answer questions and promote the good drinking water that we have in Metro Vancouver and how we need to be mindful about how we use it,” said Marilyn Towill, Metro Vancouver’s division manager of water services.

Their team will be promoting water-wise ways to clean up driveways and wash vehicles as well as how to make the most out of household appliances that use water.

“I think overall, people are just more aware of how much water they’re using and so they’ll be more aware of the water restrictions.

We’re quite hopeful that people will continue to decrease their water consumption for this year,” said Mussatto.

With better conditions on the mountains, the more substantial snowpack will help with reservoir levels in the coming seasons. The

wet weather in the Lower Mainland means good conditions on the ski hills, said Towill, who reported that their last survey done at the end of February on the mountains reported a 90-per-cent average snowpack for the year.

“We are in much better shape than we were last year at this time,” she said. “It doesn’t tell the whole story in terms of what’s going to happen in the summertime, but certainly it puts us in a better position in terms of being able to have reliance on that snow melt to provide part of our summer water storage.”

SeaBus daily, said those testing events have gone better than expected, given the troubled nature of the Compass Card program.

“I do think the entire fare gate experience has been a complete debacle but it is not as slow as I thought it would be,” he said.

The one exception, Doherty said, is when Waterfront Station has a SkyTrain, SeaBus and West Coast Express all arriving at the same time and a bottleneck more akin to the Lions Gate Bridge begins to form.

“We’re all shuffling forward for maybe a minute and a half,” he said. “But I do feel sorry for anybody who’s on the other side. ... If a thousand people are going through in one direction, good luck trying to get through in the other direction.”

In early March, Peter Fassbender, the minister responsible for TransLink, said the transit authority wouldn’t be allowed to close the gates until it could guarantee the system would stay accessible for people with disabilities.

That’s something TransLink can commit to, Moreland said, promising extra staff at all gated stations during rush-hour periods to assist anyone unable to tap in or out.

“Regardless of whether the gate’s open or not, it is a requirement for customers to have valid proof of payment in fare-paid zones,” Moreland said on the subject of wouldbe fare evaders hoping to sneak through the open gate.

“As we have been doing, we’ll continue to have people out on the system that are checking fares and enforcing.”

Transit police and security will be armed with hand-held scanners able to check that SeaBus and SkyTrain riders have properly tapped in.

And TransLink is reminding its users – especially those on the North Shore

– that the old paper bus transfers and FareSaver tickets won’t work on the fare gates. Bus riders will still be able to pay their way onboard with change but the transfer tickets won’t be valid at the SeaBus terminal.

Those transit riders will end up having to pay twice for the same trip, Moreland warned.

“That’s why we’re encouraging all of our customers to get a Compass Card. You can store value you on there and you’re ready to go.

Customers who do that will actually find they’re paying less than … they would have with cash,” Moreland said.

The changeover comes as ridership aboard the SeaBus may be, figuratively, heading south, according to a

recently published customer survey by TransLink.

“Compared to the last two years, the number of trips made on SeaBus has dropped to an all-time low of 4.3 (average weekly) trips this quarter (down from 6.9 a year ago).

This may have been influenced by the implementation of one-zone bus fare diverting riders from the two-zone SeaBus,” it stated.

But the survey used a small sample size of 171 users and was by no means a detailed study of rider behaviour, TransLink warned. An in-depth study on ridership is not due out until May or June.

When the North Shore News asked whether the zone change was affecting ridership in December, TransLink spokesman Chris Bryan said there was “no notable impact on ridership on SeaBus as a result of the shift to One Zone Bus Anywhere on Oct. 5.”

Comparing the four weeks following Oct. 5 versus the same period in 2014 showed a nearly identical average load - 141 in 2014, 142 in 2015. The average daily ridership rose slightly, from 13,915 to 14,097, TransLink said at the time and that there had been “no increase in reports of crowding on our downtown-bound routes,” spokesman Bryan said at the time.

Too rich to swallow

ining out is getting more and more expensive in B.C., especially if you’re breaking bread with the premier.

Lobbyists have been shelling out as much as $10,000 for the privilege of dining with Christy Clark; and as voters and taxpayers, we’re curious what is and isn’t on the menu during those dinners.

We need to be clear that our premier has not done anything outside the law nor anything unethical. But simply put: it looks bad. The practice of essentially selling access to the premier has raised similar stinks in Ontario and Quebec.

In 2015, Woodfibre LNG paid to join West Vancouver Sea-to-Sky Liberal MLA Jordan Sturdy at a fundraising gala. It’s our guess the annual fundraiser, in which lobbyists, Liberal boosters and corporations buy tables, had absolutely nothing to do with the final approval of the facility. Again,

nothing illegal. But we keep coming back to the way things look.

Those who lead our province need to avoid not only impropriety, but the appearance of impropriety.

When asked about a recent dinner hosted by Simon Fraser University’s chancellor, the premier’s office offered no comment of any substance. This effectively draws a veil over voters, who have no idea what our premier has been saying, nor who she’s been listening to.

Anyone spending $10,000 on dinner is likely expecting more than good clams: they want the premier’s attention, and possibly her favour.

We hope Clark will be just as attentive next year when she’s on the campaign trail, discussing transit passes and school funding over a double-double with those who don’t have five figures to drop for the pleasure of her company.

n their report, Fast Cities: A comparison of rapid transit in major Canadian cities, authors Cherise Burda and Geoffrey Singer compared the rapid transit systems in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa.

Prepared for the Pembina Foundation for Environmental Research and Education, the report studied how “effectively” the differing transit networks served their users.

With that caveat in mind, the first impression to jump out of the report was that, as North Shore taxpayers and their municipal governments have known all along, transit investments since TransLink was formed in 1994 have largely benefitted the 600,000+ residents of the City of Vancouver. That’s because most of those residents live

within the one kilometre ideal “walkability” range of rapid and/or express transit.

With 28.2 per cent of the population within that walkability range, Metro Vancouver tied Ottawa for third place at 28.2 per cent.

However, when it came to the number of residents within one kilometre of rapid transit alone, Metro Vancouver finished in last place with 18.6 per cent.

Those numbers were despite the fact that, from 1994 to 2014, TransLink had opened 82 kilometres of new rapid and express transit service — second only to Toronto’s 106 km.

Transit only succeeds at attracting people out of their cars when transportation authorities invest taxpayer dollars in the right technology, built in the right place, at the right time. For the North Shore, that hasn’t been happening. As former chairman of TransLink’s Mayors’ Council on transportation, District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton said, “Rush hour used to see

vehicles streaming off the North Shore; now commuters are traveling in the other direction.”

So now, just in time to welcome Seattle’s Kevin Desmond, who took up his post as TransLink’s new CEO on March 21, here are a few recent Metro items to consider: The first comes from Prof.

Patrick Condon, chairman of the masters of the Urban Design Program at UBC, who told me, “A $370-million federal transit contribution, although welcome, is one-tenth the amount hoped for. This makes it all the more imperative to find less expensive ways to provide zero greenhouse gas emissions transit for our region.

Specifically, this means Surrey and Vancouver must find less expensive ways to meet their transit needs.”

From my perspective, that means independent transit professionals should be the ones to decide what will be the “right” technology, not provincial or local politicians.

by TransLink uncountable times over the past 22 years, those significantly more affordable alternatives are not only available, they are proven and in reliable use in hundreds of cities around the world.

The second comment, from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an interview on Global TV, led me to believe he had not only read Condon’s January, 2016 open letter to him titled Don’t Waste Billions on Bad Transit Projects, he acknowledges its wisdom.

Speaking of Surrey’s aspirations and of Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson’s proposed Broadway subway — which, though estimated to cost around $2 billion, would stop well short of UBC — Trudeau said they weren’t covered in this year’s budget because they were not ready to be built and, further, that although the projects are needed they also need to be “done right.”

“We need to be responsible with our spending, about

our investments, to ensure they have the best possible impact on Canadians …” he said.

Hopefully, that means we can look forward to having Metro Vancouver’s transit decisions based on technological best practices, integrity and affordability, rather than on unnecessarily expensive political legacies like subways and SkyTrain.

One way to encourage that is for all North Shore councils to refuse to be a part of “business as usual” decisions at TransLink.

All three North Shore mayors have soundly rejected Delta Mayor Lois Jackson’s suggestion that all bridges in the region should be subject to a dollar-a-trip toll. Let’s hope they will now tell Vancouver Mayor Robertson that, if he and his council are determined that the Broadway transit line will be a subway they are on their own; North Shore taxpayers are tired of paying through the nose for “the greater good.” rimco@shaw.ca

B.C. enjoys big piece of fed’s budget pie

I

doubt any province fared better from the recent federal government budget than British Columbia, which may actually have received a record harvest of Ottawa largesse and attention.

Last week I suggested relations between the Trudeau government and the Christy Clark government may ultimately sour if the Pacific Northwest LNG project is nixed by Ottawa, but for now things seem to be going swimmingly well between the two.

And considering how much money Ottawa is prepared to pour into this province, why wouldn’t they?

After years of parsimonious budgets from the likes of Stephen Harper and Jean Chretien, B.C. is feeling the love of a prime minister who has thrown fiscal caution to the wind and gone on a spending spree the likes of which hasn’t been seen -- in this province at least -- in a very long time.

The budget contains a number of line items for B.C. that carry with them big time funding amounts: $460 million for transit improvements, $32 million for a UBC drug research facility, $24 million for the Kitsilano search and rescue centre, $60 million for a forensic lab at the Surrey RCMP headquarters, $106 million for a North Vancouver wastewater plant, $86 million for Highway One expansion ... the list is long.

Perhaps the key offering from the federal government is its commitment to pick up 50 per cent of the funding of major infrastructure projects, such as the proposed Surrey light rail transit lines and the Broadway subway or SkyTrain extension.

That change in the funding formula will cut municipal funding requirements in half, as cities will now have to pay just 17 per cent of the budget, instead of 33 per cent.

The only major disappointment, for some, is the delay in funding those big transit projects. But the prime minister’s retort is a valid one: why spend money on them now when the plans for them haven’t even hit the drawing board?

The jury is also still out on the federal government’s pledge to fund a new national health accord. But that may be

B.C. is far and away leading the country in economic growth and is expected to be the leader for some time yet . . . created within the next year, which will suit the provinces just fine.

There are likely a number of reasons for the Trudeau government’s apparent affection for B.C. One may be the prime minister’s own strong personal ties to the province, since his mother’s family is from here, and he went to university and taught here.

But another and probably bigger one is based on the Liberal Party unexpectedly

winning 17 seats here in the election, and presumably Trudeau wants to use that breakthrough as a Western anchor that has long been elusive for his party.

He doesn’t want to repeat a big mistake made by his father after he won a large number of seats in the 1968 federal election. Pierre Trudeau quickly frittered away that goodwill, as Western Canada turned its back on his leadership.

What doesn’t get a lot of public attention is the fact that direct communications between the Prime Minister’s Office and the B.C. Premier’s Office have never been better, as key senior political aides to both leaders have worked together in the past.

While it’s true the B.C. Liberal government has hired a number of ex-political staffers from the Harper government, almost all of them are junior ministerial staff. What’s more telling is the strong relationship that exists between the two corner offices, which are all-powerful within their respective governments.

Finally, there’s the fact that B.C. is far and away leading the country in economic growth and is expected to be the leader for some time yet. The technology sector is booming, tourism should have a strong year with our low dollar, and B.C. is tops in job creation (although, as I pointed out a couple of weeks back, many of them are of the part-time variety).

The Trudeau government, no doubt nervous about the poor economic performance across the nation, may want to do everything it can to keep B.C.’s economy firing on all cylinders. And spending gobs of money here will help ensure that will happen.

Search suspended due to high water From page 1 “(The water) is high and getting higher because of the rain over the weekend and then warm temperatures (bringing) lots of snow melt.

It’s really, really treacherous,” Trousdell said.

The RCMP called in its dive team for the recovery but suspended the search overnight. After another attempt Tuesday morning, dangerous waters forced officers to suspend the search.

“After conducting an assessment, it was determined that current water levels are too high to safely conduct a recovery at this time. Water levels will continue to be monitored and a recovery will be attempted once water levels permit it,” said North Vancouver RCMP Sgt. Doug Brecknell. “The Lower Mainland District urban patrol helicopter and the North Vancouver police boat will continue to monitor the creek beds and Burrard Inlet in an effort to locate the man.”

Friends on social media have identified the victim as Coquitlam’s Cole Marsh, a Terry Fox secondary student

and talented lacrosse player.

The popularity of cliff jumping in the park has grown in recent years due to posts spread on social media.

In 2015, park rangers reported 13,049 cliff jumpers compared to 8,861 in 2011.

Visitors to the canyon were drowning at a rate of more than one per year up until 1993 when the district employed seasonal park rangers, in part, to warn about the dangers of cliff jumping.

The death rate decreased dramatically.

In September 2015 an international student from Pakistan drowned when he jumped into 90-foot pool and was caught in an underwater eddy.

The ranger program, however, does not staff up until May. District of North Vancouver Mayor Richard Walton said his thoughts are with the teen’s family.

“These are always tough for the entire community and for a lot of our rescue guys who are involved. It’s a heck of a way to start the spring season,” he said. “There’s signage everywhere. It’s just very frustrating for everyone.”

In an act of neighbourhood patriotism, residents of Pemberton Heights in North Vancouver have pulled together to brew a beer that benefits their community.

Scott Dempster and the Pemberton Heights Neighbourhood Association recently decided on a signature brew to raise funds for future community activities. Dempster highlights the “old-school” quality of their area, and says the community is tight knit and connected with pride for their home turf.

“I would say about 60 per cent of my friend base now is within the neighbourhood,” he says. “On any given Friday or Saturday night, my wife and I have two boys, and we commonly get together with our friends in the afternoons or evenings and have dinner and, quite honestly, everyone drinks. So why not sell a product that everyone’s going to be having anyway?”

He sees their product as an opportunity to share the pride they all feel for their community with friends and guests from around the Lower Mainland. “You can say look at this cool product; our beer for our neighbourhood.”

Working in partnership with Bridge Brewing, the team wanted to appeal to the masses and make a beer that would be easy to sip on. Dempster explains that to get a custom brew, they had to agree to make a full tank of their product, which would equal roughly 2,100 craft beer bottles of 650 mililitres.

Once packaged, that would produce 175 cases of beer to be sold, and when the North Shore News talked with Dempster for this story, he reported they had already sold 100 cases at $82 each. Approximately a third of those sales will be donated back to the neighbourhood association, around $24 per case.

Dempster describes the beer as a Kolsch style, light and perfect for summer. After a round of tasting and smelling a combination of Bridge’s company brews with neighbour and

brewmaster Jeremy Taylor, they decided on the Kolsch and added citrus hops to make it their own.

“We went with a beer that everyone would be interested in. Kolsch is very similar to say a lager or a pilsner style beer, in that everyone will drink it,” says Dempster. “We didn’t want to come out with an India pale ale, dark and very hop-y, because our sales wouldn’t be nearly as good as they’ve been. An IPA might only appeal to 20 per cent of our market, where we want to be able to reach everyone with this.”

In an effort to get more people involved, Dempster and the team started a photo contest to further customize their product.

Inspired by the classic Jones Soda labels, they put out a call for creative pictures of the neighbourhood taken by its residents to place in the framed center of their label.

“We wanted to get people excited about the project and motivated to be a part of it,” he explains, sounding excited as he delves into the details. “It’s really cool because it lets people have their image on the bottle, and it’s something cool again to bring it into more of a community project.”

After the initial success of this project, the neighbourhood association is mulling over ideas for an autumn brew or even a wine from a vineyard in the interior owned by a couple in the area.

“We’re probably going to try and do this as a by-annual thing, where we would do a spring beer, like what we’re doing right now, and then we’ll probably do a fall beer as well, like an ale or a winter ale, and do the fundraiser twice a year,” Dempster says.

The association’s beer launch party will be on April 16 at the Corner Stone Bistro in Pemberton Heights where they’ll be serving the custom batch on tap from 4 to 7 p.m.

Designed on a tight budget, the renovation was completed in the two phases with only one permit and one plan, saving significant dollars.

Creative design and clever purchasing also meant many existing materials and items were retained instead of purchasing new. The upstairs addition placed over the living and kitchen area retained the majority of existing structure. The kitchen was completely transformed including three impressive skylights. Existing materials were incorporated where possible, including blending the old floor with the new.

Tall Timbers – Retired, with no desire to move, it was important for this homeowner to stay on a greenbelt and to capture the outdoors. A professional landscaper, the garden was a

major focus for this retiree. The solution? Moving the kitchen to where the dining area was made way for an open floor plan, and created space for an island, allowing for a visual site-line through to the garden.

Adding beams and glass with a covered patio seamlessly connects the outdoors to the new interior renovation. Materials used include natural fir glulam beam rafters and high energy efficient glass to keep the room temperature comfortable through all seasons. The end result feels like you are eating outdoors year-round.

Originally purchased 18 years ago, the homeowner made the decision to renovate with two goals in mind. One, she wanted to create a pleasant living space for her parents, and two: create a proper upper storey with two bedrooms and bathroom for herself and daughter with a more esthetic and functional daughter, space to cook and entertain. Wanting to preserve the unique heritage and character of their 1911 home, it was also important to modernize the standards and needs of their multi-generational family.

To achieve the client’s goals, Kerr Construction raised the home to accommodate full height ceilings with lots of light, and added a patio for the new in-law suite in the basement. Attention to detail was paramount, including traditional mill work, cabinetry, tile-work and coffered ceiling details throughout the entire renovation.

The coffered ceilings were rebuilt to align with the new support beams. Leaded glass and oversized lantern-style light fixtures were used to keep the feel of the home’s original character. Where possible, the original stained glass windows were removed and rebuilt into new sealed units to save energy while keeping the old-world charm. Original window detail in the upstairs bedroom was removed, but replicated when the addition was added.

Exposed gable beams were also replicated to the originals. To complete the overall finish, the front porch was removed and reinstalled on the new base when the home was raised.

Pursuits may not be permanent

In the early 1970s when my children were born, I never would have contemplated that my daughter would become an engineer and my son an Internet whiz.

How did this happen and what was my role in their career choices and professional development?

As parents our role is to encourage and support, to be open to possibilities, to listen to and respect our kids’ interests and to be flexible as their interests change and develop. Even more importantly, our job is to help our children understand that they are unique, with special abilities. Let’s take a look at these roles. Three-year-old Justin just loves big vehicles.

His friend Riley can name every kind of dinosaur. These are not unusual interests for kids of this age but it’s what the parents do that will make the difference.

You can take kids to the library and find books that they can read about their interests. Watch for activity books that they can use. Even though you know this is likely a phase and will pass, treat it seriously while it lasts. Your kids will soon learn that you will support and encourage them. They’ll also develop

Seven-year-old Miranda is fascinated by Play Doh; she can spend hours manipulating it, forming bowls and sculptures. Her friend Kendra is dramatic. Everything she does is a performance.

Is Miranda destined to be a great artist and Kendra an Oscar-winning actress?

Probably not, but they deserve to have their current interests recognized. Miranda would probably love the children’s pottery classes at the local community centre and Kendra can join a kid’s drama group.

The trick is that these interests may last, but are often short-term. But each time we respect their current passions, we give a message of support. They learn that

they should try new things that intrigue them. If at the end of the pottery class or drama session they decide to move on, respect that.

Sometimes we get so excited at the prospect of having a child who will become a great pianist or hockey player that we stop listening to them when they are ready to try something new. And sometimes, if our child stays with an activity for a number of years, we feel we have contributed so much in time and money that they owe it to us to continue.

Just when your child has reached a level where they may win medals or scholarships, they decide to move on. Our job is to respect that and be careful that we see all their pursuits as part of their maturation, not as a means to an end.

For the most part, however, it’s wise to ask your children to follow through to the end of a course or sports season before they quit. The exception is when the course is a negative experience (a coach or teacher who insults your child, for instance).

We know our children better than anyone else and can often identify their unique skills. Teens are not skilled at looking at their interests

and abilities in an objective fashion. They often don’t even recognize their talents.

If they are great athletes they usually know it. Other skills are more challenging.

Let’s say you and Lindsay, your 15-year-old daughter, go to visit a friend at her new home. Your friend gives you a tour of the new place. It’s an older home with many interesting features. On the way home your daughter talks incessantly about what could be done to renovate the place. You are blown away by the detail she expresses and the practicality of her ideas.

Tell her that she has an amazing talent. Let her know that there are career opportunities for her if she’s interested. She will think that anyone walking in that house would see what she did. She needs you to tell her that while you could see that there should be ways to enhance that house, you couldn’t see how it could happen. We have an important role in encouraging, supporting and educating our children to their possibilities.

And each year on their birthdays, we reflect on who we were at their age and who they are today. And we celebrate. parentingtoday.ca

Warning signs of childhood vision troubles Adults know when they are beginning to experience trouble with their vision. In such instances, men and women will book appointments with their eye doctors to determine what’s causing their problems. But whether it’s a fear of eyeglasses or simply feeling their symptoms are normal, kids might be hesitant to tell their parents about any vision problems they’re having. As a result, parents must learn to recognize certain warning signs that indicate their children are experiencing vision problems.

Vision problems in youngsters can be especially problematic, as many of the lessons kids learn in school still begin on a chalkboard. The following are some potential indicators that kids might be dealing with vision problems that require medical attention.

Reading habits: Vision problems may be most noticeable when kids are reading. As youngsters learn to read, they might use their fingers to keep their place while they figure out the pronunciation of certain words. But kids eventually grow out of that habit.

Kids who are still doing so long after they have learned to read may be having trouble seeing words on the page. In addition, kids who pull their reading materials very close to their eyes may be struggling to see the words.

Viewing habits: Peculiar viewing habits may also be indicative of poor vision. Kids who sit too close to the television may be struggling to see what’s on as opposed to just being overexcited to see their favorite shows. Kids who prefer to watch programs on tablets they can hold as opposed to televisions may also make that choice because it’s easier for them to see on their tablets than on the television. In such instances, ask why they prefer tablets to television. When kids watch TV, ask them to move further away from the television. If they complain moving back makes it hard to see, book an appointment with an eye doctor.

Eye rubbing: Many kids, and even adults, rub their eyes when they are feeling fatigued. But kids who seem to rub their eyes frequently and at times of the day when they should

not be tired may be experiencing vision troubles and feeling frustrated that they cannot see very well.

Eye activity: Some kids begin to close one eye when reading, watching television or attempting to read signs. That may be indicative of a refractive vision disorder, in which the eye struggles to focus, or refract, light correctly on the retina. Such problems can often be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses, but some refractive disorders may require surgery.

Squinting: Kids who squint a lot may be finding it difficult to focus on words on a chalkboard or even television programs. Squinting may also be brought on by a corneal abrasion. Parents who notice their youngsters are squinting should consult the child’s eye doctor to determine the cause of the problem.

Parents who learn to recognize the various warning signs of vision troubles can nip problems in the bud before they have too great an impact on their children.

Host hints at hot and spicy challenge

Rosemary Wang, the eponymous Rose of West Vancouver’s Rose Thai Restaurant, smirked ever so slightly as she weighed up Gil, my dinner partner, and I one recent weeknight in her dining room.

The room was an elegant and unusual space with an enticing aroma of lime leaf and warm wooden decor. I glanced at the wall over Rose’s shoulder and noticed an imposing painting featuring her likeness, Chris Dagenais donning the same sardonic smile. It was a surreal moment and I half expected my wristwatch to start ticking backwards while a crying clown holding a small woodland creature emerged from the nearby kitchen.

confidence to say “yes.” You see, we had been asked if we could handle spicy heat in our meals. Our initial affirmation, however, was apparently too casual because Rose, adopting a much weightier countenance on her second asking, challenged us with “are you sure about that?”

Our server had summoned Rose when we told her that rather than order for ourselves, we’d prefer to be served a selection of dishes about which the kitchen was proudest, the rare and unusual house specialties that would take us far, far away from the ubiquitous Pad Thai, Green Papaya Salad and Tom Yum Gai. The server deferred to her boss, who was over at our table in a heartbeat and seemed to relish the challenge of taking us out of our comfort zone.

Rose Thai’s menu is an impressive volume, a visual illustration of the cuisine of chef Roger Xu, a Thai specialist who Wang met in Shanghai and convinced to move to West Vancouver to helm the kitchen of a new joint venture back in 2007. Xu has led the kitchen and Wang the front-of-house ever since. Gil and I felt the photo-heavy menu was overwhelming and thought it wise to let the experts take control of the reigns.

By and large, we were steered in a positive direction and emerged grateful for Rose’s sound counsel.

First up was a silky, tangy and fiercely hot bowl of what was introduced as Coconut Soup. OK, so Gil and I are both familiar with Tom Kha (ginger soup typically made with coconut milk as a base) and its various iterations, but this potent riff on a wellknown theme turned out to be a real treat, shamelessly fiery and bold. The coconut milk-rich broth, with its rusty orange hue and velvety texture, was a full-on flavour assault of chili, aromatic galangal, lime leaf and lemongrass tempered ever so slightly by morsels of mushroom, chicken, bell peppers, tomatoes and cilantro. It was a good start to the meal that prompted us to switch from Thai beer (Rose Thai offers Chang and Singha) to a local, spicy, food-friendly Gewurztraminer by Sumac Ridge, its floral nose and slight residual sugar pairing nicely with the intense flavours of dinner.

salty/sour/spicy dip of fish sauce, chilies and plum sauce.

Now look, the prawns were of exceptional quality, about that there was no doubt. However, Gil and I were surprised that of all the seemingly exotic and flavour-packed appetizer options on the menu, this dish, effectively panko-ed shrimp tempura, should have been selected to challenge our palates.

While we enjoyed the plump and tender prawns well enough, I would suggest this was the one miss of the lineup and that we would have preferred something a touch bolder.

Happily, we were soon back on track with a phenomenal dish of Crab in Yellow Curry, a house specialty that Rose explained was not ordered often enough given its exceptional quality. We had to concur as we tucked into a large plate of Dungeness crab slathered in a thick, coarse yellow curry paste and garnished with scallions and cilantro.

The curry was packed with deep flavours of toasted spice including cinnamon, coriander and turmeric, as well as hefty doses of garlic and ginger. We attacked the crab with nut crackers, forks, finger bowls and a dozen paper napkins, relishing the marriage of fragrant yellow curry paste and delicate Pacific crab and remarking on the relatively tame chili heat aspect of

the dish. It was a laborious affair to get at the meat, but worth the effort and certainly an interactive experience I would recommend trying for yourself.

This creative and thoroughly stimulating dish didn’t come cheap, mind. The crab was listed as “market price” on the menu and we noted with a slight gulp that the dish represented $78 of our pre-tax,

As increases in the cost of food become a more relevant issue for families across the Lower Mainland, waste reduction and efficiency have a seat at the head of the table.

To help inform shoppers on how to save on their shopping lists while still making healthy choices, Metro Vancouver and Safeway recently teamed up for a six-week in-store campaign called Love Food-Hate Waste.

Margaret Broughton, chairwoman of the North Shore Table Matters Network and community nutritionist, said the main reason local families reported wasting food was because the products were past the best-before date. She’s calling for more education around the role of best-before dates, when a product is still safe to use and when it’s actually expired. The Love Food-Hate Waste team also focused on ways to keep food fresher for longer and how to utilize leftovers.

“Menu planning is a skill people have lost a little bit, we don’t have that much emphasis on food because it has been so cheap. I think with the increasing cost of food people will naturally become more mindful about how they use it,”

A deceptively complex dish of Stir-Fried Cabbage appeared shortly after the crab and revealed lovely notes of garlic and green chilies, while a late arrival of House Special Fried Rice with chopped prawns, calamari, tomato, onion and peppers reverted back to our meal’s fiery start and had us reaching for water within two bites.

A record-setting crowd was treated to great spectacle – as well as a lesson in World Class soccer – when Vancouver’s BC Place played host to a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Canada and Mexico Friday.

The spectacle included the fans with the stadium packed with an estimated 15,000 Mexican supporters decked out in sombreros and fake moustaches and a massive contingent of Canadians wearing red. The official attendance number was announced at 54,798, making it the largest crowd ever to watch a national team event of any sport in Canada. Included in that number were thousands of youth players sporting the track suits of their local clubs, including the North Shore’s North Van FC, North Shore Girls Soccer Club and West Vancouver Soccer Club.
