Horoscope A look at the year ahead

2016 will prove to be a pivotal year for everyone.

A Universal 9-Year, it will generally include themes of ending, completion and graduation in preparation for major new initiatives in 2017. 9-Years can be compared to late autumn when the garden is put to rest for the winter and when bulbs are planted, which symbolize long-term plans and commitments.

At a collective level, the international agreement to reduce fossil fuels at the climate summit in Paris provides a good example of this preliminary process.

The implications of this global goal will begin to take root in 2016 yet will likely take until 2017 to begin to be evident. Social, political and economic changes linked to environmental concerns will remain at the forefront in the news. This background influence will also naturally have repercussions for us all at personal levels.

The sign entries below provide a summary of some of the core themes we each can expect in 2016.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) The seeds of new adventures were sown in 2015. As exciting as this may be for you, since it is in alignment with aspects of your core nature, feeling as confident as you would like may pose some challenges. Knowing your direction is a cornerstone of this issue. Yet your passions and resolve will deepen measurably early on this year. Getting specific about your dreams so they can become your goals and then your reality will prove important. It may require the better part of 2016 to clarify your priorities and objectives, so focus. Yet, take your time so you feel certain and solid. By late summer you will take a definite turn to increasing your social horizons.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 21) 2015 was likely a year of significant changes for you and the process will continue and deepen in 2016. At best, you have begun to get more in touch with your truth and may therefore feel happier and more confident as the year begins. Yet you may also feel the need and subsequently the challenge to re-invent yourself somehow. By

extension, this challenge includes re-interpretation of your goals and priorities and re-centering. You may experience some major challenges from others in June and July so prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. If legal matters are in your destiny this year they will come to the fore in autumn especially.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21) In some respects 2015 was probably a breakthrough year for you. Circumstances did and will continue to push you to deepen your focus on health matters; whether your own or those of others. In either case, expect a process of increased discipline which includes a steady learning curve. Positively, you feel more confident and there are indications that this trend will continue. Yet you will also have to work hard especially early in the year and from mid-spring to mid-summer. By late summer new love interests could blossom. This new love could also manifest as the announcement of a new family member or inspirations for important creative projects.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22) 2015 was probably full and busy for you on a variety of fronts. You should expect the pace to continue throughout much of 2016. Some cherished dreams and ideals are now clearer in your awareness and a growing resolve to crystalize these will unfold in 2016. March, April, August and September could prove extra busy. However, while it may take until late summer, your confidence levels stand to rise measurably coinciding with a slower pace. October could produce important changes in your career and/or social status, affecting every area of your life. Aim for a promotion of some kind, by year’s end anyway.

LEO (July 22 - Aug. 23) A new vision of possibility was seeded in 2015. Now the flow of your destiny will guide you to begin the next important phase of establishing a reliable foundation.

Tapping latent gifts and

talents is linked to the need and ambition to increase and strengthen your income stream. Simply activating a healthier rhythm and routine is also possible. Home renovations or key moves of some kind are possible this winter but more probably late spring or early summer is indicated. Either way, improvement and increase is on your mind. Expect the pace to speed up by late summer steadily increasing into 2017.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22) 2015 awakened you to the need to lay claim to latent gifts and powers. By late summer the realization that you have received more of a summons than an invitation became increasingly evident. As 2016 begins you have likely taken some preliminary steps towards deliberate action or at least feel internal pressures to do so. If you can take the initiative very early in the year do so as you may contend with doubts and procrastination when Jupiter turns retrograde on Jan. 7. On the other hand, the first half of 2016 could prove better devoted to completing projects began last year, leaving new initiatives until the second half.

LIBRA (Sept. 22 - Oct. 22) While 2015 probably proved to be a time of new learning and the activation of various skills, you may also have had and now continue to contend with deep uncertainties.

These may be as simple as wondering what constitutes the next key cycle of achievement. This question period process could result in a soul searching journey for much of the year.

Preparing the ground to take key initiatives in September may prove to be the single most important thing you do.

With your ambitions sparked at the outset of the year this stands to be a year of major advancement, at least in terms of building a promising momentum.

SCORPIO (Oct. 22 - Nov. 21) 2015 ushered in an investment cycle that will continue throughout 2016. It may be time, money and/ or specific effort that you must invest. When she did, others who’d come to admire the lights started to cheer.

“That just added to the magic of the moment,” he said.

Renaud also made a donation to Lights of Hope, which allows St. Paul’s to help hundreds of thousands of patients each year.

Renaud, who is studying music therapy at Capilano University, said the couple were high school sweethearts and 10 years ago he gave her a present of registering a star that they named “our promise.”

This brings things “full circle,” he said. “Ten years later we made it.”

Renaud said he and his fiancée, who works with children with autism and is pursuing her master’s in applied behaviour therapy, have not yet to set a wedding date.

It was tiny jolt as earthquakes go, but still the biggest one felt in the Lower Mainland in more than a decade.

Just before 11:40 p.m.

Tuesday night, a piece of the relatively small Juan De Fuca plate slipped under the much larger North American plate about 50 kilometres below the surface, near Sidney on Vancouver Island.

Natural Resources Canada recorded the quake’s magnitude at 4.7. The United States Geological Survey put it at 4.8. Within about 10 seconds, the shaking was over and the reverberations began to spread on social media.

“I felt about five seconds of rumbling, then a bang, followed by a few seconds

Austen Renaud can thank his lucky star.

On Dec. 18 the North Vancouver resident made a memorable marriage proposal to his girlfriend of 10 years, Jocelyne Bonneau, when they visited St. Paul’s Foundation’s Lights of Hope display.

As they stood admiring the dazzling 100,000-light display, she looked up to see a glowing star that read: “Jocelyne, Will You Marry Me?” Renaud dropped to one knee.

The Ontario couple moved to North Vancouver last year and were wowed by the Lights of Hope display and planned to make a return visit this year to start an annual holiday tradition.

But Renaud, 26, had even bigger plans. After contacting St. Paul’s Foundation, he arranged to bring his girlfriend to

“In Vancouver there’s a huge amount of variation in the type of material that we’re sitting on and therefore it could vary from one place to another,” she said. “Here on the North Shore, most of us on are on bedrock. You feel less than you would if you were in Richmond at the floodplain of a river.”

A new hope

E

ver the optimists, we look at 2016 like a yet-to-be-opened gift.

What’s behind the wrapping and bow, we won’t know until the pots and pans are banged and the boats sound their horns at midnight, but we have high hopes, especially for the people and communities we cover on the North Shore.

For North Shore Rescue members, we hope the province shows up with a new funding model. Or better still, we hope 2016 contains many more quiet nights at home with family, thanks to amateur adventurers getting better prepared before heading into the backcountry.

We hope 2016 finds a way for the newly elected federal government to make good on the promises its leader made over the past year – there are big ideas there and the risk of big failure, but also the possibility of real changes for Canadians.

For the City of North Vancouver, we hope for relative political peace and some serious progress on bringing life back to the Shipyards.

The District of North Vancouver has the job of dealing with traffic on the Cut. We hope for anything that gets things moving again. For transit commuters, we hope for a break in the political impasse that’s preventing us from improving our system.

Canada has a swath of new refugees arriving in the months ahead. We hope they find a welcoming embrace and serenity in their new lives as the headlines fade.

Blessedly, 2016 holds no local, national or B.C. election campaigns and so we hope our politicians at all three levels act like it.

Regardless of what the year ahead holds, we hope you’ll stick with us, as we bring you the news and commentary.

New West Van MP talks LNG, arts & Ottawa In snooty West Vancouver, where we think foreign relations begin at the North Vancouver border, it is novel to have a bona fide parliamentary secretary for the federal foreign affairs minister.

“I got to Ottawa on the Monday and found I was going to be the parliamentary secretary on the Wednesday,” Pam Goldsmith-Jones said, her laughter and 24-hour-a-day political animalism crackling over the phone.

The freshly-minted Liberal MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country got a kick out of going through the Lester B. Pearson Building, home of the Department of Global Affairs. She – and fellow new North Shore parliamentary secretaries, Jonathan Wilkinson for

environment and climate change and Terry Beech for science, who will both be asked for interviews by the undersigned – were briefed on secretarial duties and given security checks.

The fun part of the job over, Goldsmith-Jones took the initiative in inviting this hard critic of her West Vancouver mayoral record for a bit of a talk and a forthcoming lunch.

Obvious topics: The proposed Squamish liquefied natural gas plant, the (long) proposed North Shore wastewater treatment plant, and the (equally long) proposed new West Vancouver art gallery, now named the Centre for Art, Architecture + Design (CAAD).

The LNG plant decision process is getting a fresh re-start in the next couple of months, making it the most immediate issue of the three. Would she take part on behalf of her constituents?

“I think I’ll be in the conversation – I’m not sure how formal,” GoldsmithJones said. “I would like to be involved in the process.

I’ve always had a lot of faith in the design of the process.

“If we are serious about living in a carbonconstrained world, that’s a serious game-changer. … I

think it’s fair to ask: Where is the Squamish Nation coming from? There seems to be a disconnect there.”

She didn’t signal a personal stand: “To be truly interested in hearing from everybody, without saying what you think – does that leave you wide open, or does it lead to a good conclusion?”

The proposed sewage treatment plant, cost $700 million or much higher, is at the other end of the controversy spectrum – it’s not stirring public interest. “People don’t call (politicians) because the treatment plant doesn’t need fixing,” argues Troy Vassos, a North Vancouver environmental engineer and wastewater treatment expert, as reported by North Shore News columnist Elizabeth James.

The municipal boundary-crossing nature

of the proposed plant led Goldsmith-Jones to emphasize the new reality – solid Liberal red from North Burnaby to beyond Powell River on Vancouver Island. That embraces four MLAs and three MPs, or two and a half if you split hairs about Terry Beech’s constituency bestriding the inlet. The larger picture: a western Liberal caucus that zoomed from four to 32 in October’s election. I suspect Goldsmith-Jones sees personal opportunities there.

The CAAD project, which Constant Reader knows I deride largely because of its proposed location overlooking John Lawson playground – even more, as a reader pointed out, if it threatens the magnificent sequoia on the northeast corner of the site – isn’t an immediate issue for Goldsmith-Jones.

Count on continued controversy for 2016 As we head into a new year, it appears more than likely that many of the issues that dominated B.C. politics in 2015 will re-emerge in the coming 12 months.

After all, we are a polarized province. People line up on opposite sides of many issues, and the result is often friction, protests and controversy.

The coming year will be no different.

Take the multi-layered texture of the energy issue.

Whether it’s oil pipelines, liquefied natural gas plants, coal shipments, renewable resource projects or simply the cost of filling up your car, chances are that energyrelated issues will dominate headlines in 2016.

The proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline is approaching the finish line, although it’s not yet clear whether it will actually cross it and become a reality. If it ever does gain approval, mass protests – likely to include widespread acts of civil disobedience – will

turn B.C. into a major battleground of political wills.

This has the potential of making the fabled anti-logging protests in Clayaquot Sound in the 1990s look like a group hug. The anti-pipeline lobby may not represent a strong majority of public opinion, but it is a wellorganized (and wellfunded) lobby.

Construction of the Site C dam has begun, but it faces certain court challenges and likely civil protests next summer (once the weather in the north is more conducive to standing outside for long

periods of time).

In fact, the dam could evolve into a critical election issue by 2017. The B.C. Liberals and the NDP have taken polar opposite positions on the dam’s construction, and each seem to think the public backs their particular stand. We shall see.

And court challenges and protests will also become lashed to various proposed LNG projects.

As any of them edge closer to reality, count on any controversy over them to become louder and louder.

And if we don’t actually see any company make a “final investment decision” on actually going ahead and building a facility, that may put increasing heat on Premier Christy Clark, who has gone all in on the LNG industry.

It’s likely the perennial hot button issue of transportation (at least in the Metro Vancouver region) will also dominate political debate in 2016.

While the B.C. Liberal government has arbitrarily decided the new Massey

Bridge (to replace the tunnel) as its top priority when it comes to major projects, the region’s mayors favour other proposed projects, such as light rail in Surrey, a new Pattullo Bridge and a subway line down Broadway in Vancouver.

But the mayors and the province remain vexed on how to pay for everything, which means that debate will continue for some time. Meanwhile, the federal government is about to dangle a lot of cash in front of all the parties, which may finally force some compromises to get things built.

And we’ll see how the relationship between the B.C. government and the new federal Trudeau government develops over the year. Will it be an extended honeymoon, or will tension between the two arise?

Chances are we’re going to be seeing Trudeau out in B.C. a fair amount, so keep an eye on how many events both he and B.C.’s premier attend at the same

time for an indication of how they’re getting along.

What else is a safe bet for controversy in the coming year?

Even with an expected budget increase, the children and families development ministry will remain a beleaguered entity and in the news fairly often, for all the wrong reasons. The problems the ministry deals with are simply too complex and difficult to expect a perfect record when it comes to caring for children and youth in government care.

But even many young people not in government care are facing significant problems. The issue of

poor mental health among youth is approaching nearepidemic proportions in B.C. schools, according to any number of teachers who witness problems associated with it every day.

And given that this is B.C., expect even more protests over other issues, including one that has been simmering for some time – logging practices on Vancouver Island.

The year ahead should indeed be a lively one in B.C. politics, as is the norm.

Dear Editor: I am a senior and I was in a checkout queue at Walmart last week.

When it finally came my turn, a man with his young boy pushed in and asked the clerk for a price check. He then said “I’ll take it” and to my dismay the clerk ran it through while he fished for his

money. I thought of saying, “The end of the line is that way,” but the man looked aggressive and was certainly bigger than me, so I said nothing.

When I thought about it later, I felt angry and then sad that an adult would teach his young boy to act this way. All I can say is “Whoever you are out

there reading this, I hope you think about what you did.” If you had said to me, “I only have one item and I am late for my boy’s hockey practice,” I would have waved you through.

In future, please think about others and not just yourself.

It’s the mother of all fender benders.

A District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services engine is off the road and facing up to $100,000 in repairs after it was struck by a transport truck.

District firefighters were attending to a minor collision on the Main Street off-ramp during the morning commute on Christmas Eve when the

incident happened.

“A semi-trailer came around off the bridge and sideswiped straight down the entire side of (the engine), doing substantial damage,” said assistant fire chief Mike Cairns. “The driver left the scene.”

Firefighters had put out safety cones and signs ordering drivers to slow down, Cairns noted.

The RCMP’s Port Mann Highway Patrol is investigating and has spoken with the driver, thanks to a witness at

the scene giving them a description of the truck.

“That investigation is still ongoing. No one’s been ticketed as of yet but members are speaking to the driver and the trucking company involved,” said Cpl. Ronda McEwen, RCMP spokeswoman.

“Based on the totality of the circumstances and everyone we spoke to, it does seem as though the driver may not have even been aware of striking the fire truck and continuing on. It’s not, obviously,

a common hit-and-run where people are aware of the circumstance and then flee and try evade any apprehension.”

The damage should be covered by the trucker’s insurance, Cairns said.

The collision demonstrates the risk firefighters face when dealing with roadside incidents, especially when drivers don’t slow down, Cairns added.

That is “one of the more dangerous things crews have to deal with,” he said.

With overnight temperatures dipping to -4 C this week, emergency weather spaces at the Lookout Emergency Aid Society’s North Shore shelter have been filled to near capacity.

Sixteen of the 20 available spots were occupied Monday night when temperatures plunged to -2. And with sub-zero weather forecast into next week it should remain busy.

“If we end up reaching 20 beds in a night that will dictate us using our secondary site,” said Bailey Mumford, manager of the North Shore shelter.

When the Lookout’s emergency mats are full, an additional 20 spaces can be set up at North Shore Neighbourhood House.

The North Shore shelter has 45 year-round beds. Emergency spaces open during periods of extreme weather, including forecasts of three consecutive days of heavy rain with a low of 4 C and

freezing temperatures.

Mumford said the North Shore’s emergency spaces have been open since Dec. 17 with six to sixteen of the spaces being used.

According to statistics from the 2014 homeless count, 119 people live without permanent shelter on the North Shore but that number is likely higher in reality.

Some prefer to “sleep rough” in the woods or other desolate areas.

“There’s always going to be some people that choose to do that... And we haven’t seen them so I’m assuming they’re still choosing to be outdoors,” said Mumford, who expects emergency mats to remain out for at least the next week.

Mumford said donations of cold weather items such as socks, rain jackets, boots, casual clothes, shoes and underwear are always welcome and can be dropped off at the shelter, located at 705 West Second St. – with files from Brent Richter

An earthquake measuring 4.3 or 4.8, is a fragment of what seismologists are expecting when the “big one” hits but it’s still likely the strongest one felt in the Lower Mainland since a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the southern end of Puget Sound in 2001.

Mike Andrews, emergency planning officer for the North Shore Emergency Management Office, was roused from bed by the tremor, kicking into action the team meant to help usher the North Shore through a crisis.

“Immediately my phone started ringing and I turned my radio on as per our standard operating procedure,” he said.

About an hour and a half later, after Andrews confirmed through his provincial counterparts there were no reports of damage or threats of a tsunami and the emergency management office had updated its website, Andrews went back to bed. On Wednesday, he

was back in the emergency management office talking preparedness for when the many-thousand-times stronger subduction quake off the West Coast of Vancouver Island hits.

“Those occur every 200 to 600 years and we’re in the return cycle. The last one was Jan. 26, 1700 at 9 p.m.,” he said.

In April 2015, the District of North Vancouver released the results of a fiveyear study into what would happen when a 7.3 quake hits. It found at least 15,000 North Shore homes would be without water and power and more 4,000 people could be forced outside in the immediate aftermath.

Up to 2,000 people are likely to be injured, overwhelming Lions Gate Hospital. Several hundred would likely be critically injured, or killed.

The emergency management office is making great progress in planning its response to such an event, including carrying out the largest-of-its-kind response drill in November, Andrews said, but it’s the rest of us who have been slack in putting together emergency kits and plans, he added.

Residents should have a readily accessible supply of clean water and nonperishable food, flashlights and batteries, blankets, a radio and medication for at least 72 hours, preferably a week, Andrews said.

It felt like everyone had just gotten up and left.

Having jumped at an opportunity to photograph the McKenzie shipyard, located just west of Cates Park, a day prior to its demolition to make way for a new condo development, mixed-media artist Tracy McMenemy was completely taken by what she saw.

Things were sitting still. There was clothing hanging on hooks, open notebooks on tables, blueprints lying around, and a chair sitting out on the dock as if someone had just had lunch on it.

“It felt almost apocalyptic,” says the North Vancouver artist who maintains a studio in East Vancouver.

“I got goosebumps a couple of times when I walked through some of the spaces. You could certainly feel the energy of the people that worked there. That’s what you’re looking for as an artist is that connection and it was there in spades,” she says.

According to McMenemy, McKenzie Barge and Marine Ways was launched in 1932.

Bustling in its heyday building ship and tug boats, since the late-1970s, operations were downsized and the company was primarily focused on things like repairs and painting.

The shipyard remained operational until the day in August 2014 that McMenemy went in to conduct her self-described “material investigation,” photographing, documenting, archiving and collecting various objects from the site. Today, waterfront townhomes and apartment residences are being built on the site.

McMenemy went on to spend a year on a series of works inspired by the shipyard and her resulting pieces are set to be showcased in Ghost Passages of the McKenzie Shipyard: An Exhibition by Tracy McMenemy, opening at the Vancouver Maritime Museum Jan. 7.

“I think it was just the perfect fit for this theme,” she says.

“It’s exciting to talk about the shipyard – as another place that’s disappearing. If we don’t notice these places, the energy, they will be gone the next time we drive by. It’s a reminder to stop and take note, look closer and take time to see what is in our backyard and community.

My artist’s resurrection brings the colour back,” she adds.

There were a “couple of strange, serendipitous situations” that led to McMenemy’s McKenzie shipyard project coming into fruition.

Her initial introduction was simply the result of driving past the site for the last decade, along Dollarton Highway.

“It was striking because it was this very beautiful setting with this building on the water.

I always wondered what was happening there.

Once I started painting, I would imagine myself having a gallery in the front of the building and a studio in the back looking out at the water. I saw there was lots of parking and thought about

New play explores family dynamics Cross-Canada tour kicks off in North Vancouver

Canadian theatre luminary Lucia Frangione has a knack for relatability with her plays, mining her own life for character and storyline inspiration.

In Espresso, arguably Frangione’s most successful show, she plays three Italian-Canadian women grappling with the imminent death of the family patriarch.

Espresso was inspired by true events from Frangione’s own Italian upbringing, and saw her injecting her family’s idiosyncrasies into the show – like when they brought biscotti to the

intensive care unit where her dad was hooked up to an intravenous drip.

Frangione kept a mental note of how her family handled a series of health misfortunes, but waited 12 years to pen the play Espresso.

Her patience paid off as Espresso was well received, with Frangione earning the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association emerging artist award and seven Jessie Award nominations on the strength of that production.

“I think plays are about survival. We watch plays to know how to survive these tragedies to be able to have the strength to laugh at them and to be able to come through them,” says Frangione of why writing relatable material resonates with audiences, when reached at her East Vancouver home a few days before Christmas.

fellow classmates from the Rosebud School of the Arts.

“It was just us three girls who were graduates of Rosebud, and we wrote this silly little show and took it across Canada with a 300-pound circus wagon in the back of our pickup,” says Frangione, laughing.

“We lost so much money, we almost quit. I said, ‘No, girls, we’ve put so much effort in so far, keep going.’”

Their perseverance was rewarded on the West Coast where Holy Mo won a Pick of the Fringe accolade at the Vancouver Fringe Festival and got picked up by Vancouver’s Pacific Theatre which has since produced the play four times.

Most of Frangione’s writing explores themes of spirituality. She has questioned the effects Christianity has on family and sexuality through humour.

Her new play, In a Blue Moon, however, guides Frangione into a new writing frontier as she now begins her exploration about “what is family?”

“I have written a lot of religion in the past, and I feel I’ve said what I need to say about that, and I’m now moving into conversations about family and community,” says Frangione.

In a Blue Moon is described as a visually beautiful tale about creating a new life in a new

landscape.

When Ava (Anita Wittenberg) and her daughter, Frankie (Emma Tow), move to an inherited cottage near Kamloops, they discover that Ava’s late husband’s brother (Brett Christopher) is already living there. Initially, it’s a tense environment for the trio, but along the way unexpected relationships blossom as Frankie finds a role model in her uncle and Ava grows attached to the companionship of this other man.

“Through memories and photographs, a tender love story unfolds between the three as they begin to thread together a new understanding of family,” says a press release from the Arts Club Theatre Company, which is producing the touring show along with Western Canada Theatre (Kamloops) and Thousand Islands Playhouse (Gananoque, Ont.) from Jan. 8 to 30.

In a Blue Moon is the first new script developed by the Arts Club to premiere as a cross-Canada partnership between three producing companies, and, as Frangione explains, underwent many interesting iterations over a seven-year period.

“I just kept writing as I kept waiting for a producer,” says Frangione, laughing. “And I’m glad I had that time because this one took me a while to unravel how to tell this story. It’s been a million different things. It’s been a physical piece with a lot of yoga in it – didn’t work.

It was ridiculous, I’m glad I got talked out of it. It was a musical, I have a full score.”

Frangione also went through three different writing partners, but in the end decided to pen the whole play herself. She abandoned the musical idea because she said it wasn’t as powerful as the photography story.

The framework for In a Blue Moon is loosely inspired by a few people from Frangione’s upbringing on the Prairies, but the characters came into her periphery by chance while Frangione was staying at her best friend’s house in Kamloops. Frangione had met Anita Wittenberg in

He gets a bland tour of the city from his taxi driver before checking in to the Fregoli Hotel, where he gets the same monotonous greeting from the front desk clerk, and another from a hotel bellman.

In fact, everyone – male and female, old and young – speaks in the same voice, including the son he has left back home and an exgirlfriend, with whom he has a disastrous reunion in a hotel bar. (That’s Tom Noonan lending his voice to all the other characters.)

This is the way Michael sees the world around him: everyone is the same.

He’s become accustomed to it, but his belief in this sameness has poisoned every relationship he has.

Michael believes that he has met the one other person on the planet who isn’t pretending to be someone else, a shy fan named Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh).

The two share a connection (yes, the puppets share an R-rated connection): Lisa is surprised by it; Michael is desperate to hold onto it.

But nothing is as it appears to be (the name of the hotel, for starters) which is unsurprising coming from Kaufman, the creator of such weirdness as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation.

Fun, no. Compelling, yes. Anomalisa is filled with more longing and palpable loneliness than many other live action films registered this year.

it very rationally as well as in my imagination. It had always been in my mind as a beautiful spot,” she says.

McMenemy was pleased then when, out of nowhere, in the summer of 2014 she received a phone call from a family friend whose wife, unbeknownst to her, was a member of the McKenzie family. The wife’s father and uncle had been the shipyard’s two owners.

The family friend had long been a supporter of McMenemy’s art, having attended her shows over the years, and had a proposition for her.

“He said, ‘They’re demolishing it tomorrow, can you come in today and do your thing and make a piece for my wife as sort of a memory of her father who had recently passed away?’” she recalls.

In disbelief at the timeframe, McMenemy jumped at the opportunity nonetheless and the next day, grabbed her gear and headed over, spending five intensive hours photographing intricate details of the site.

“I thought I was going to do a piece, but I was just so blown away by everything that I found there and the feelings that I had there. It was really serene with the setting on the water but the actual shipyard was quite ghostly,” she says.

In fact, she had heard rumours about actual hauntings, having been told about a number of employees who’d over the years seen “an old man down at the dock,” yet the man never actually

materialized.

“I had a lot of feelings about it so it blew up into a year of my life, working away at it,” she says.

McMenemy will be exhibiting 38 pieces of a variety of types in the upcoming exhibition, showcasing her efforts to blur the lines between photography and painting.

“I basically start with a photograph and then I either use that as inspiration or I actually transfer part of the photograph onto my panel and then I paint after that,” she says.

She’ll also have some three-dimensional works on display, including a 17-foot-tall water line marker and a tool box with art on the inside of it.

The show’s title, Ghost Passages, is a reference to a common theme in McMenemy’s art.

“A lot of the work that I’ve done with abandoned places have something to do with the passage of time, and so I knew that I wanted to have passages in the title and it had that ghostly feel,” she says.

An added significance to her chosen title is that passages can also refer to waterways.

“I grew up as a sailor, so I’ve always been connected to the water. . . . and I think that’s probably why the shipyard caught my attention when we first moved out to Deep Cove and I’d always wondered what had happened there behind those doors. It’s funny you know, you get a phone call and it changes your life. I had no idea I’d spend the last year of my life working on this,” she says.

Determined to step into what he saw as an emerging e-commerce market, North Vancouverraised Sean Clark kicked off his footwear company Shoes.com from the basement of his parents’ Dunbar home.

This month, Shoes.com opened its first brick-and-mortar location on busy Queen Street West in Toronto, with a second Vancouver location slated to open on Burrard and Robson in the new year, where they’ll have a coffee shop and curated selection of shoes from the almost 500 brands they offer online.

“I think it’s all about, with Shoes.com, just making it more convenient for our customers; having a store where people can go in and speak to someone in person, and see and touch brands,” said Roger Hardy, co-founder and CEO of Shoes.com. “We really want to elevate the experience of online shopping and really make it this omni-channel idea where it is more than just an online presence.”

Hardy, the former CEO of Clearly Contacts, mentored and hired Clark, who worked for the Australian division of Clearly Contacts before he left to build the footwear website ShoeMe. ca, which later became part of Shoes.com.

With Shoes.com the focus is on providing a superior online shopping experience with free shipping for orders (even

offering two-hour delivery, in some cases) and returns.

The site offers a wide range of large mid-priced footwear (Steve Madden, Birkenstock, Frye, Sam Edelman) with a handful of designer labels (Chloé, Miu Miu). The site has technology that hones in and curates a selection of styles for individual customers.

“In e-commerce, service and selection are really the pillars of how you build an e-commerce company – I learned that at Clearly Contacts,” explains Clark, a Handsworth secondary grad

who came up with the idea to create an e-commerce footwear site after seeing a press release in 2011 announcing that online shoe and clothing shop Zappos was pulling out of Canada.

“I forwarded (the press release) to Roger and I said, ‘Roger, this is our shot, there’s no online footwear player in Canada,’” Clark recalls.

The other impetus for launching an e-commerce footwear site was Clark’s own days spent driving to Bellingham to pick up his then-girlfriend (now wife’s) goods on the other side of

the border.

“When I was driving down at the time, I was like, ‘Oh this is brutal, why am I doing this?’ I was like, ‘Look at what I am doing. There has got to be a better way.’

So that’s what kicked me into action.”

When it comes to online shopping in general, the United States has a much larger market percentage.

“I bet everything that I had that it’s going from two per cent to 10 per cent, and then (if it does) there is a $70-million opportunity just in Canada,” Clark says from the boardroom of the company’s Georgia Street head office – a long way from the basement.

A wall in the spacious office includes a picture of Clark’s mom, Teresa, a retired teacher who taught at St. Anthony’s School in West Vancouver. She helped Clark fill out his first orders, when he didn’t even have stock, but had launched a $60 site just to test the waters for demand.

The demand was there, and Clark spent those first weeks running around buying up and sending out the shoes online customers had ordered.

The other photo, a grinning Jon Austrom – today the director of operations – was Clark’s first paid employee, after responding to an ad that said: “Must have own laptop.” Austrom was hired at the company’s first “office,” the Blenz coffee shop on the corner of West 4th Avenue and Alma Street.

and solid footing in the market – both in Canada and the United States – the question is whether the company will go public this year.

“I think we would have been ready to go in early 2016 and pretty much everybody is now saying that the first half of 2016 looks bleak; I almost feel like it is becoming selffulfilling,” Hardy says.

“We’re kind of good to go, but it’s always subject to the market, but you also want to look at what’s the right time for the business. The business continues to grow very healthily in Canada, but it still is a fairly new and young business. Having said that, we are comfortable doing an IPO when the timing is right.”

If the market bounces back in the second half of next year it could be the right time to take the leap, he says.

In the meantime, Shoes.com continues to grow, having acquired California-born sock and accessories brand, Richer Poorer.

Whether it goes public next year or not, Shoes.com is clearly becoming another darling of Vancouver’s emerging tech startup scene.

Playwright inspired by own experiences From page 16 their early days of theatre in Vancouver. While they were catching up, Wittenberg’s daughter, Emma, was practising her violin while they were sitting in the living room having tea. And then she practised jazz. And ballet.

And guitar. And singing.

“And I thought, ‘Oh my god, there’s my character Frankie.’”

Frangione immediately rewrote the play to include 14-year-old Frankie, inspired by Emma. Originally, In a Blue Moon was a twohander and didn’t have a child character. But including Frankie changed the course of the play and created “the most interesting character” in the show, in Frangione’s opinion.

Creating a new sense of family for Frankie is one of the underlying themes of the play. For Frangione, it’s art imitating life in a way.

For a while Frangione was a single mom with a young daughter trying to figure out how to live in Vancouver with the housing market.

“How we were going to exist, just like Ava and

Frankie?” says Frangione, recalling that time in her life.

It’s very moving, says Frangione, to see reallife mother-daughter duo Anita and Emma on stage because they look like each other and they have a natural beautiful rapport.

“You just can tell that you are looking at the real thing,” describes Frangione.

As for In a Blue Moon’s leading man, Christopher won over Frangione with his charming ways as an actor.

“He really sank into this role. He’s a dad so he brings that wonderful dad energy to the role. And he’s a handsome guy, and he’s got good chemistry with Anita,” says Frangione.

Up next for the awardwinning playwright, Frangione, who has more than 25 pieces under her belt, is penning a new play for Pacific Theatre, a chaser to Holy Mo, called Holy Mo Christmas Show.

“It’s just going to be ridiculous fun is all I can say.”

Frangione also remarried recently, so perhaps the new family dynamic will be fodder for another heartwarming show.

The last week of the year is always a contemplative one, sandwiched in between a headlong rush towards Christmas and waiting around for a toast and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”

It’s a lazily reflective time; a time for remembrances and resolutions.

For me, it’s also time to dig through the folders

from the past year and pull out a few memorable gems, the stories that still linger on the palate. Here’s a look back at the best drives of 2015.

January We begin with a little insanity, in a Tesla P85D perched atop Cypress.

Already supplanted by the P90D, the top-dog electric machine from California

spent the previous year making headlines for its blistering, supercarcrushing acceleration.

Love it or hate it, the Model S has already left its mark on the automotive industry, and where the twin-motor, near-700 horsepower P85D is concerned, it’s also about to leave its mark on your spleen. With only a single speed in the transmission,

and instantly-available peak electric torque, the speed was immediate and surprising. It really does feel like Chewie just punched in the hyperdrive.

doors, but the first flash of the year was electrifying.

February Remember the original Hawaii Five-0? I bet you can play the big brassy theme song in your head right now.

Set on Oahu, everybody’s favourite tropical cop show came with its own fleet of Malaise-era machinery getting caught up in chases, and perhaps none was as memorable as Jack Lord’s Mercury Marquis. Turns out there were only three of these used over the course of filming, and the last spent a full six seasons as both hero car and stunt machine, working without backup.

After making a call to Illinois, where McGarrett’s other car resides in freshly restored splendour, I dug up the original machine on the set of the rebooted Hawaii Five-0. It was in pretty sad shape, but fired right up when called upon. Together with Lord’s former stuntman (who also doubled for Tom Selleck on Magnum P.I.) we went for a slow cruise below the palm trees, deep in the heart of the Pacific.

March Early spring was all about the surprise of finding RX Autoworks, an awardwinning restoration shop tucked away in a nondescript building not far from Lonsdale Quay. From the outside, the place might as well stock lawnmower parts. On the inside, ancient and irreplaceable machinery gets brought back to life.

The crew at RX restorations has a couple of prestigious Pebble Beach trophies to their name, as well as wins at Villa D’Este. Meeting them really opened my eyes to the appeal of the pre-war vintage car, especially when mechanic Rob Fram talked about taking a twinsupercharged early Alfa-Romeo out for shakedown runs at 5 a.m. – this is a car

worth around $15 million, and they’re hammering through the straight-cut gears like the hounds of hell are after them.

April Knowing Rob was handy as he helped get my dad’s ’67 MGB back on the road after we broke down on a thousand-mile road trip with the guys from Classic Car Adventures. A budget-oriented rally for those of us with non-Pebble-Beach-deep pockets, we were part of dozens of mixed old machinery circling the province from Penticton round through Salmon Arm to Lillooet. It was an epic trip, and the old ’B soldiered on mightily.

Relying on an old British car to go the distance is one kind of madness, but another, more high-octane brand can be found in yet another nondescript workshop in Langley. I’d been out to HPA performance before, but this time founder Marcel Horn handed me the keys to his latest mad science project: a twinturbocharged V-6 Golf R with 740 h.p.

No, that’s not a typo. This humble little hatchback was capable of running door-todoor with the just-released Lamborghini Aventador. After driving it, everything else just seemed slow.

In May I met Harjeet Kalsi, an electrical engineer with the greatest attitude towards cars ever. You’d expect anyone who owns a mint green AstonMartin Lagonda to be a bit crazy, but Kalsi is refreshingly sane and candid.

“This is a car built by humans,” Kalsi says of one of the most tricky machines to keep on the road. “There’s no magic, you just figure stuff out.”

Harjeet is a regular at the annual AllBritish Field Meet at Van Dusen Botanical Garden, and he’s currently restoring a rare supercharged Studebaker Avanti to concours spec. Watch this space.

Another happy story of a different kind of car person came later in the month, when I drove a pristine 1977 Honda Civic belonging to a Japanese woman named Hiroko Marunaka. Hiroko wasn’t a gearhead at all, but just had a deep appreciation for well-loved objects. Her Civic – called Kinjiro, for golden boy – was nearly flawless and utterly charming.

We drove the car from the remnants of Japantown, cleared out by Canada’s internment of the Japanese during the Second World War, below the drifting cherry blossoms, to the war memorial in Stanley Park that lists Japanese-Canadian volunteers in the First World War. Later, after the article came out, I heard that Hiroko’s application to immigrate to Canada and continue her nurse’s training had been approved. It made me hopeful for the future.

June In June I learned about a (maybe) barge of Czech-made Tatraplans sunk beneath the waves between here and Victoria, found a gent who collects the oft-overlooked Dodge Rampage, drove a Delorean DMC, and found an adorable collection of tiny Subaru kei-cars.

However, the best story out of the month was that of the Green brothers. A See Hot page 30

Hot summer yields a couple of oddities From page 29 pair of longtime B.C. Hot Rod Association members, Ken and Eric Green, grew up watching stoplight drags on Kingsway and eventually built their own dream cars. One was

a Morris, the other an Anglia, and while both cars were fitted with Ford V-6s, each was custom-built to match either brother’s personality.

The twist is that Eric was dying, having contracted a musclewasting disease that left him chair-bound.

He hadn’t been in his workshop in six months, but we brought him down to tell the story of his car; watching the brothers talk

together was like seeing them as boys once again.

July Hot days in the middle of the year saw me behind the wheel of a couple of oddities. A reader emailed me about his Ford Sierra Cosworths – think of them as the Mustang’s English football hooligan cousin – and we dragged one out of storage and took it for a boot. It didn’t disappoint, and as a reminder, always

shoot me a note if you’ve got something interesting in your garage: I’m always looking for a good story.

As far as good stories go, you couldn’t do better than the Fred Phillips collection in Calgary. Housed in multiple buildings, this eclectic mix of machinery ranges from the sublime (two Lamborghini Miuras and a Bizzarrini 3500GT) to the ridiculous (a 4x4 AMC Scrambler baja racer from James Garner’s racing team).

August The highlight of the end of summer was attending Monterey’s car days, including Pebble Beach and the historic races. This last was incredible, and seeing old racers dance once again around the circuit at Laguna Seca was otherworldly. The heritage F1 cars were particularly captivating, and their drivers didn’t hold back.

Pebble Beach’s concours d’elegance was

a bit more of a spectacle than a gearhead’s delight, but there was one pretty special moment. Another Calgarian, Grant Kinzel, brought his very pretty Ghia-bodied Abarth to the show, and nearly walked away with a bestin-show. Having restored the car essentially singlehandedly, this was a huge achievement; better yet, Grant was up on stage in cowboy boots and a T-shirt, in stark contrast to the hoity-toity Pebble Beach crowd.

September In the hills near Hiroshima, the roads curve and loop, and are open and lonely. It’s the exact opposite of Tokyo’s crowded core, and there’s no better place to be than in the seat of a firstgeneration Miata.

I spent a few days in and around the city, as the only Western journalist covering the anniversary of Mazda’s main proving

grounds in Miyoshi. As a fan-pleasing hurrah, they trotted out their Le Mans winning 787B and did a few hot laps. It was utterly ear-splitting.

Things got a bit weirder when I met up with Tomohiro, a friend who once owned one of Walter Wolf’s custom-made Countachs. He had a Le Mans spec Murcielago racing car, which he promptly took out on the street: a terrifying machine.

October Later in the fall, things got closer to home with a look at the vehicles of our own North Shore Rescue.

They’re busier now than ever, and the snowfall makes life tricky – happily, their mobile offroad ambulance-cum-command centre makes sure “Knuckles” (Tim Jones) is still in the field in spirit.

We took her early Rolls and Bentley out for a drive down by Spanish Banks, getting lucky with the weather for once.

November In November I managed to get the last drive of the year in a Porsche Boxster Spyder, a car with the heart of a 911 and a slightly overcomplicated top. I ran the thing top-down out to Port Renfrew, giggling

all the way despite frozen ears and a chilly nose.

Sometimes bad ideas are the best ones.

December A quieter month spent at home working on smaller stories, the real drive of the year came on the way down from Squamish after a family hike.

Two small people chattered away happily in the back, as the sun shone on snowy peaks and our fingers all defrosted.

I’ve made my mustdrive list for the coming year, and have set a few email chains in motion.

2015, you were a very good year. Come on, 2016.
