Forest fires, a federal election and fleeing Syrians: Part 2 of our year in review

The typical summer news drought was apparently cancelled in favour of an actual drought that proved most newsworthy.

Our water reservoirs ran dangerously low and forest fires ignited at the drop of a hat (or more likely, drop of a cigarette butt).

A federal election campaign call in August gave more than ample time for voters to suss out their options and change their minds a few times before the Oct. 19 election.

North Shore Rescue sounded the alarm that, after a record number of calls, they too were in need of a rescue.

July TransLink Tax Voted Down The TransLink funding plebiscite landed with a thud on July 2. Metro Vancouver residents were asked if they were willing to pay a 0.5 per cent sales tax in order to fund the municipal share of a $7.5-billion expansion plan and 61.98 per cent said no.

Vancouver mayors who championed the tax were quick to lament that there was no “Plan B” to deal with the transportation needs of a region expected to grow by another million people. West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith, however, praised it as a victory for common sense.

Smith said it should spur the province to reform TransLink. Transportation Minister Todd Stone declined.

Smoke and Haze Lower Mainland residents awoke on Sunday, July 5 to see the sky blackened with smoke and the sun reduced to an eerie orange orb. Forest fires burning in Elaho Valley, the Sunshine Coast and Boulder Creek, covering more than 25,000 hectares in all, blanketed the Lower Mainland with smoke.

Metro Vancouver issued an air quality advisory warning for those with respiratory conditions as the level of particulate in the air reached four times the normally acceptable levels. “These are amongst the worst conditions I remember,” said Julie Saxton, Metro air quality planner.

over the next two days.

Trail Arsons Investigated As if everyone wasn’t thoroughly sick of smoke and flames threatening the province, someone deliberately set 13 small fires along the trail through Hastings Creek Park in Lynn Valley early in the morning on July 8.

Residents formed bucket brigades to keep the small fires from spreading in the bone dry forest.

The RCMP arson unit investigated; however, no arrests were ever made.

Is It Getting Dry in Here?

After an almost complete lack of rain in May, June and July, Metro Vancouver laid down the law when it came to water use. For the first time in 12 years, Metro went to Stage 3 watering restrictions, which meant no car washing or pressure washing, no lawn watering, no refilling pools or hot tubs – not even running through the sprinkler.

“It showed we are in uncharted territory, City of North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussato said.

“We’re using too much water.”

Residents took to social media to “drought shame” the “midnight hosers” and “grassholes” with stillverdant lawns.

August Election Campaign Begins Seeking an early start to the campaign, then Prime Minister Stephen Harper officially called the 2015 federal election and more than a dozen candidates representing the four major parties got out door-knocking in the North Shore’s three ridings.

West Van Cop Sent Home with Boozy Breath Eyebrows were raised when it was revealed a West Vancouver police officer showed up to work impaired and then drove home.

The incident happened in 2014 but came to light in a report by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner. The officer received a one-day unpaid suspension and a written reprimand.

The province postponed the work and went back to the drawing board.

Slide the City Despite severe drought and watering restrictions, the City of North Vancouver went ahead with a 300-metre (1,000-foot) waterslide down Lonsdale Avenue for a day. More than 6,000 ticket buyers slid from Keith Road to Third Street.

“I booked it in March. I was like, ‘Hell, yeah,’” said slide user Tara Payne.

Slide the City organizers purchased 50,000 litres of H2O from a bottled water company in Abbotsford to run the slide and a portion of it was recycled to irrigate plants and trees in the city.

September When it rains, it pours After lying dormant for months, the wet, stormy weather came back with a vengeance.

An early September storm brought 100-kilometre winds, causing 28,000 power outages, damage and injuries, downed trees and at least one wedding to blow into the harbour.

Rain totalled 150 millimetres at higher elevations.

North Shore Rescue Run Off Their Feet After completing a record number of rescues and more distress calls coming in every weekend, North Shore Rescue members said they were in need of a rescue themselves.

“Oh man, it’s shocking,” team leader Mike Danks said with an exasperated laugh.

The team typically faces 80 to 100 calls per year but by late September, they’d spent more than 4,500 hours carrying out 113 rescues.

Bus depot debate revived

The District of North Vancouver is searching for the right space for a new bus depot.

North Vancouver currently uses an aging transit centre located on East Third Street, but TransLink is planning to relocate it to Burnaby’s transit centre in the fall of next year.

A unanimous vote at Monday’s council meeting has given city staff direction to begin looking for suitable land to house the new bus depot on the North Shore.

According to a district report, over 60 per cent of the staff who work at the current bus depot are North Shore residents. Transitioning the bus centre to Burnaby could affect their work commutes.

Coun. Roger Bassam, who put forward the motion, said there are some clear benefits to the workforce by having a bus depot on the North

Shore. But he said the most important thing for the community would be to have “the actual physical buses themselves.”

“As we have seen all too often, it is quite common for one of our bridges to be snarled with traffic and some sort of incident,” he said.

According to district councillors, because of consistent bridge traffic – and especially in the case of an emergency – it makes sense to have a bus depot on the North Shore that could service the community if an unexpected event were to arise.

“We certainly realize the likelihood of a major disaster is remote, but we plan for these events,” said Bassam. “And part of that is getting those assets in place so we can effectively operate as an independent community for a sustained period of time, and that means having those resources at hand.”

City of North Vancouver council has passed a series

of similar motions almost annually since the plan was announced in 2012.

According to a staff report, by the year 2028 TransLink estimates that 250 buses will be required to meet the growing needs of the North Shore.

Coun. Jim Hanson was also critical of TransLink’s proposal to relocate the bus depot over the bridge.

“Whatever the net benefit may be to TransLink, it clearly isn’t in the best interest of North Vancouver district residents to have all our buses stored in a transit centre on the other side of the bridge.

And for that reason it’s a very easy decision for me to support this motion,” said Hanson.

According to district staff, approximately 6 (2.4 hectares) to 8 (3.2 hectares) acres of land would be required for a new bus depot on the North Shore.

Mayor Richard Walton, who is a former TransLink board member, said it has been an economic challenge for the transit provider to continue having a bus depot in North Vancouver.

“They really, really, really worked hard to try and find a location on the North Shore, but what happened is the funding picture dramatically changed in about 2006,” he said.

Despite cutbacks at TransLink, Walton supported the motion to start searching for a suitable replacement location.

Bassam said that if district staff can find space for a new bus depot, “we can then go back to TransLink and really lobby for a revisit on that decision to relocate our fleet off the North Shore.”

The transit authority does not anticipate an impact on bus service for North Vancouver as a result of the move because most buses would travel to the North Shore at an early time when bridge closures were rare, said Chris Bryan, TransLink spokesman.

In the case of a catastrophic event, the transit authority could put into service any buses at the West Vancouver Blue Bus transit facility on Lloyd Avenue in North Vancouver, he added.

A Christmas story

C

hristmas season is full of stories – from the classic Christian nativity to Sinterklaas to Saturnalia. The power of stories this time of year is what makes the season so special to so many, regardless of their background or creed.

Better still, a story doesn’t have to be an epic one to touch the heart.

Our front page this past Sunday, featuring North Vancouver ballerina Lucila Munaretto’s emotional return to the stage four months after an horrific roller-skating accident, is a great example.

This past August, just as the 21-yearold dancer with Pacific DanceArts was ready to realize her dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer, tragedy struck on an Upper Lonsdale road, leaving her with a shattered jaw and

pelvis and in a medically induced coma to relieve swelling of her brain.

But rather than wallow in selfpity and despair, she stayed focused, practising ballet moves while lying in her hospital bed and visiting her dance studio on very her first day out of hospital.

When her chance came due to another dancer’s illness, Lucila was ready to take the stage again – just under four months to the day after her accident and only three weeks after her return to the dance studio.

Her dedication, perseverance and joy for life, undeterred by tragedy that would render many despondent, is an inspiration to us all.

Feliz Navidad, Lucila – and thanks for giving us all a new Christmas story to remember.

A Christmas wish or two to get us through Here it is Christmas Day. Once again I still haven’t finished shopping, and I’ve sent out exactly one Christmas card.

Sigh. If this keeps up, I’ll be drummed out of the Elf Corps, forced to spend all of my days as a lawn ornament, or wherever it is disgraced elves go.

Fortunately, thanks to this column, I can broadcast Christmas wishes to all the boys and girls, naughty, nice … or neither.

It’s kind of an honour and a privilege. I’ll try to be like Santa.

My first wish goes to North Shore Rescue. May the volunteers get to spend Christmas with families and friends instead of wandering around in the dark on top of the mountain looking for lost souls, no shining star to light their way.

They’ll sell the land upon which the current Delbrook centre resides and, unless the bottom falls out of the market, make out like a bandit, so it’s not clear who’s giving what gift to whom.

To everyone who’s been stuck on the Upper Levels Highway between Westview and the Second Narrows since what seems like Thanksgiving, be of good cheer. Sure you’re going to miss Christmas dinner at Granny’s house, but everyone knows the leftovers are better on Boxing Day. ‘Welcome to Canada’ sounds great in every language Dear Editor: Perhaps I was feeling unusually “grinchy” on that day before Christmas two years ago, or perhaps the shopping, crowds and over-the-top Christmas hoopla had finally got to me. Either way, I wasn’t feeling the holiday spirit when I entered the coffee shop at Park Royal with my daughter to meet up with a family member.

“Nowhere to park, too many cranky people – Christmas, can’t stand it,” I muttered.

As we waited for our hot drinks, I noticed a family, including two women, a teenage girl and two younger children looking over at us in

at my brother’s, which is an annual family event.

As we heard the family speaking, my daughter recognized their language as she had learned it from a school friend. She was able to greet and converse with them; they were astounded that this blond, blue-eyed Canadian girl was speaking to them in Farsi. It turned out that they were recent immigrants to Canada, arriving only a few weeks prior and this would be their first Christmas here.

They were a bit sad, missing family and friends left behind, but glad to be in Canada.

I wonder now, two years later, how that family is doing, were they able to settle in, find jobs and feel truly welcomed as Canadian citizens? Do they remember their first Canadian Christmas, and the gingerbread house?

As we prepare to

celebrate Christmas this year, and to welcome new Canadians, including Syrian refugees and those from many other countries and cultures, please take the time to learn a few phrases in another language because “hello and welcome to Canada” sounds great in every language.

Province Approves LNG The provincial government gave its OK for Woodfibre LNG to build a liquefied natural gas plant on Howe Sound, subject to 25 conditions.

Byng Giraud, vicepresident of corporate affairs for Woodfibre LNG, described the province’s environmental approval as “a significant milestone, but one of many.”

Prior to this, Squamish Nation council voted 12-2 to issue its own environmental certificate.

Turning Point Approved The Turning Point Recovery Society won approval to build a recovery house for men with addictions on Burr Place in the District of North Vancouver.

An earlier proposal to locate the nine-bed facility on Windridge Drive resulted in public backlash and fears over criminals and mentally unstable homeless people being taken in by the recovery house, putting children and property values at risk.

When it came time for a vote, however, district council did not share those fears. “I (would) not send those that need help off to some far-off hinterland and certainly, not to the 123 addictions service providers in the eight-square-block area of the Downtown Eastside drug ghetto,” said Coun. Doug MacKayDunn. “No, I say we must look after ours.”

Guilty Landslide Verdict Two West Vancouver homeowners in the British Properties were found

guilty of violating a host of municipal bylaw offences after illegal landscaping triggered a landslide into fish-bearing Rodgers Creek.

Despite being given a stop-work order, Mohammadreza Morshedian and Seyedeh Shahrbanoo Janani continued landscaping their property on Chelsea Close without permits until it triggered a landslide in March 2013. The two face fines of up to $160,000 plus $80,000 in cleanup costs.

“It sends a strong message to property owners. The district bylaws are there for a reason. And they’ll be enforced,” said Jeff McDonald, spokesman for the district.

The new owner says he intends to restore and live in the home and allow public and scholarly access.

23-year Sentence for Pimp Reza Moazami, 30, was handed a 23-year prison sentence for 30 prostitution-related offences.

Moazami was convicted of offences against 11 teens, who were between 14 and 19 when he forced them into prostitution.

As a pimp, Moazami used both psychological and physical threats to force the girls to work for him.

He took their photos to post on websites advertising sexual services, took calls to arrange their clients, pocketed the money and gave the teens drugs to keep them dependent on him.

“Well informed members of our community would be shocked and disgusted at Mr. Moazami’s conduct,” the judge wrote in her sentence.

Syrian Crisis Comes Home North Shore residents and charitable organizations were mobilized as the new government announced it would begin fast-tracking the arrival of refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war.

Canyon Heights resident Hisham Wattar had been waiting more than three years for his privately sponsored family members stuck in Egypt.

Seven North Shore united churches combined resources to sponsor a Syrian family of seven.

Meanwhile, four local women travelled to the Greek island of Lesvos to aid refugees who were coming in by the boatload.

“What would it be like if we had 2,000 to 3,000 refugees landing on Cates Park beach every day? How would we cope?” Laurie Cooper said.

Climate Change Labels Coming to Gas Pumps The City of North Vancouver made headlines around the world when it became the first jurisdiction to announce it would enforce climate change warning labels on gas pumps – similar to the ones that have emblazoned cigarette packages.

Wanting to give a little warning to those most affected, BC Assessment mailed out 2,130 notices to property owners on the North Shore to let them know their assessment will be up “significantly more than the average for their area.”

Those in single-family homes will likely bear the brunt of any jump in municipal taxes as a result of the super-heated realestate market, “If you went back to 1980 there would be only two or three other times when the single-family market across the North Shore has moved as quickly and by as much as it has in the last year,” said the assessor.

Monster Homes Addressed After years of facing complaints about the loss of neighbourhood character, West Vancouver council took some baby steps towards addressing monster homes.

New regulations favoured by council include limits to fence heights and the size of homes built on assembled lots.

The new rules, however, won’t be in effect for some time. With older homes disappearing and being replaced with megamansions at a rate of 150 per year, council ought to be acting fast, Coun. Nora Gambioli warned.

Rescue the Rescuer Community members rallied around North Shore Rescue volunteer and paramedic Jay Piggot in his hour of need. Piggot was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and needed financial support for his family while he undergoes treatment. The rescue team organized a crowdfunding campaign that pulled in $103,180 in two weeks.

“Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected the community and complete strangers to come out and support me like this,” Piggot said.

Syrians Arrive The first privately sponsored family of Syrian refugees bound for North Vancouver landed at Vancouver International Airport on Dec. 21.

Hisham Wattar’s sister, two nieces and two greatnieces had fled Damascus after Bashar al-Assad’s forces raided their home.

The United Nations High Commission on Refugees granted them refugee status in 2012 but they spent years caught in a web of bureaucracy in Cairo.

“There was lots of hugs and tears and emotion.

The kids were excited too, their cousins, their relatives,” Wattar said.

The family was cosponsored by Canyon Heights Church.

Jason Dussault turns to a new artistic medium

Jason Dussault is continuing to evolve.

Known for his high-profile streetwear fashion line Deuce Custom Ink/Dussault Apparel, the 42-year-old multimedia artist has a new focus these days that is similarly attracting widespread international attention: pop culture ceramic mosaics.

“Like talking about fashion evolving, I think it’s important for art to evolve. As an artist you’re always trying to test your limits and trying to develop your styles and evolve so that every collection you do is different from the last,” he says.

Currently based in New York City, the Kamloops native continues to spend much of his time on the North Shore as he has family here.

Dussault launched his fashion line as a custom hoodie and denim shop in Gastown in 2005. Based on positive reception, the company continued to grow and he started making his clothing on a mass level, selling his pieces through stores in Greater Vancouver. He eventually opened a shop in Los Angeles, Calif., as well as an in-store location in New York City.

First launched as Deuce Custom Ink, the company’s name was later changed to Dussault Apparel, the result of a suggestion from Kiss member Gene Simmons, who Dussault had partnered with on the musician’s Moneybag clothing line. “Deuce” had been one of Kiss’s topselling songs and Simmons also pointed out there were many other ‘Deuces’ out there so advised if Dussault wanted to be taken seriously, he should change his company name to better reflect his unique brand.

The popularity of Dussault Apparel led to a reality show, Dussault Inc., showcasing both his personal family and professional life. The show was produced by Paperny Entertainment and ran for two seasons in 2011-12. While a great experience, it’s definitely not something Dussault plans to do again, unless he’s able to make “Kardashian money,” he laughs.

Eventually, Dussault made a decision to retire his fashion brand.

“When I walked away from the brand I was kind of burnt out. It’s a lot of work with a fashion line because you have to constantly come up with new designs. My biggest challenge was that I wanted to evolve the brand and change the brand and have it change over time like fashion

does,” he says.

However, Dussault experienced pressure from retailers as well as fans wanting him to keep producing products in the same vein.

“I felt like the fashion industry was changing.

It was going from a very flashy, Christian Audigier look to a more muted, tonal, relaxed, not so flashy look and my pieces were very flashy,” he says.

“The clothing brand was very successful here in Vancouver. It’s something that I intend to bring back at some point when I have some time. I get messages on my website daily from Dussault Apparel fans,” he adds.

Dussault is eyeing the coming year for the company’s potential return as it would mark its 10-year anniversary.

“I am thinking about bringing back a limitededition line for the fans and obviously a few choice retailers,” he says.

Dussault’s interest in ceramic mosaics started three years ago. He had started experimenting with the medium and made his first work as a gift for Howard Stern, depicting the broadcaster and wife Beth’s late bulldog, Bianca.

“That dog was like their child and meant

Classic malapropisms like this one are plentiful in Blackbird Theatre’s production of The Rivals.

The term “malapropism,” in fact, gets its name from Mrs. Malaprop, a character in the play who has the unfortunate (and hilarious) habit of using words incorrectly when describing people or events. Malapropisms, still a widely used term in modern language, are one of the play’s lasting legacies.

“You know what she means, you always know what she means,” says director Johnna Wright, when describing Mrs. Malaprop. “We tried to make up some malapropisms as a joke

and it’s hard because it isn’t the right word – but you know what she’s getting at.”

The Rivals was first performed in London in 1775, the work of firsttime playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, who was only 24 years old at the time. Despite the play’s age and the relative inexperience of its author, the show has endured a long and healthy stage life due to the comedy and wit by which Sheridan skewered his topics.

The play follows the exploits of a hopeless romantic named Lydia and an upper class gentleman named Jack. In an effort to win over Lydia’s desire for passionate, non-material love, Jack does the only sensible thing he can think of: He pretends to be poor.

Along the way, a group of outrageous and over-thetop suitors compete for Lydia’s affection as well.

of the 18th century.

“We moved the time period forward to the early-20th century,” she says. “If you look at what people wore and how they

behaved in the late-18th century, it’s very formal and very artificial. Nobody went out without a wig on, that whole kind of powdered wig look that you see, and I felt like I wanted it to be more relatable than that.”

Wright says if the setting wasn’t relatable it would have been too difficult for audiences to connect with the characters. “I wanted the characters to have some vulnerability, so I put them in an era where they would look more natural and behave more naturally,” she says.

The ensemble cast, which features veteran Canadian actress Gabrielle Rose as Mrs. Malaprop, have been able to exercise their comic chops within the play’s new contemporary setting.

Wright adds that she thinks the cast has been having a blast during rehearsals.

“Everyone in the show has their comic turn. There’s certainly some characters that are more ‘the heart’ of See Theatre page 19

Acorn TV will appeal to Britophiles

Acorn TV is not your granny’s streaming service.

Sure, the service specializes in quality television programming from the U.K., Australia and Canada. And yes, you can definitely staunch the pain of Downton Abbey ending by diving into a spate of new period dramas.

But if heavily-starched miniseries aren’t your thing, the service – up and running since 2009 – also offers quirky comedies, documentaries and gritty crime dramas that often don’t air anywhere else.

Matt Graham, vicepresident of Acorn TV, says that a diverse content mix is part of Acorn’s programming strategy: “the best algorithms in the world can’t touch the really focused human curation” that Acorn offers, he says.

Acorn TV picked up an Emmy nomination this year for the 13th and final season of Agatha Christie’s Poirot, a hugely successful and perennial favourite starring David Suchet as a brilliant Belgian detective. But Graham is pleased when fans of such

traditional shows discover something new, like The Detectorists, “a quirky bighearted dramedy” starring Mackenzie Crook (The Office and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies) and Toby Jones (The Hunger Games films) as two men with metal detectors looking for a lifetime’s fortune under farmers’ fields.

“It’s a credit to our acquisitions team,” says Graham, who points out that everyone who works for Acorn watches the channel. There’s no secret programming formula, he says: “in the broadest terms it comes down to ‘do we enjoy it?’ ‘do we think it’s a high-quality show?’ ‘does it fit with the vision of Acorn?’ and ‘does our audience think it’s worth what they’re paying for?’”

A PricewaterhouseCoopers study released this past summer noted that revenue from streaming and downloading was expected to hit $9.5 billion in 2015, while physical sales of DVDs was expected to plummet to $7.8 billion. It’s a watershed moment, the first time that streaming has overtaken physical movie sales. Furthermore, the study reports that by 2017

But Acorn TV’s high-def streaming service has seen “tremendous” growth since its launch, with audience numbers close to doubling in the past year, according to Graham. In addition to more than 160 titles – with new additions each week – Acorn is rolling out apps

on additional platforms and expanding their programming pipeline.

Many of Acorn’s subscribers, he notes, have more than one streaming service and already subscribe to Netflix and Hulu, for example.

“People see us as a valuable addition to their à la carte viewing habits,” thanks to first and/or exclusive airings of programs (Doc Martin, starring David Clunes, for example) combined with the convenience factor: “we make it really easy, compared to going through hours and hours of content.”

Graham says that he “absolutely” makes time to watch TV, counting Foyle’s War (“a pinnacle of TV-making”) as a recent favourite, as well as The Brokenwood Mysteries series from New Zealand.

Going beyond a mere good laugh, Wright’s direction emphasizes some bigger themes about the way people interact with one another. Gender, identity, and social standing are explored in a comedic yet perceptive manner in Wright’s skilled hands.

While some of the characters in the play behave “badly,” as Wright puts it, she also says Sheridan demonstrated love and care for his characters when he wrote them. Despite the fabrications the characters create, they are doing their best in a society where social standing is meant to be everything. A play as richly told as The Rivals is the kind of work that Wright is drawn to as a director.

“I want to do plays that have a generosity at their

heart and this play really does – The Rivals does,” she says. Wright wants to direct shows “where you can love the people and see they are trying to connect to the other people, where the playwright is generous with the characters and loves them as well.”

The Rivals marks the 10th anniversary performance for Blackbird Theatre. The company’s focus is on classic plays, ancient or contemporary, and over the years they have put on major productions by the likes of Beckett, Chekhov, and Ibsen.

Although Sheridan is a lesser-known playwright, Wright says this won’t hurt the reception of The Rivals. She says the play’s humour and the important questions it raises about how people present themselves is guaranteed to entice audiences.

“It is a story that still has meaning today,” she says. “To me, it’s about this question of pretense and when we’re pretending to be something we’re not, what do we lose?”

A warm welcome for refugees North Vancouver knitter organizes donation drive

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference.

A few years ago, Mary Conquest learned that her then three-year-old daughter would need open heart surgery.

“I was walking out of the hospital with her, having heard this news, trying very hard not to cry, and a woman at the information desk leaned out and gave us a little knit doll,” the North Vancouver resident recalls.

Crafted by a hospital volunteer, the small token was just what she needed in that moment.

“I know personally how much a handmade item can mean to someone at a difficult time.”

Today, Conquest is paying it forward, knitting hats and mittens for Syrian refugees arriving in B.C. And she’s inviting other crafters to join her.

In late November, she started Warm Welcome, a campaign to make and donate cosy accessories to refugees landing at YVR during the chilly winter months. It’s a project she pitched to the Syrian Canadian Council of B.C. before launching to make sure her efforts would be useful.

“I got an enthusiastic yes,” she says.

She spread the word via her social networks, including an online knitting and crochet community called Ravelry,

and crafters soon began dropping off handmade items at her home or sending them in the mail.

“I’ve received toques, I’ve received headbands, one gorgeous shawl – all of which we’re receiving with gratitude and I’m sure will be welcomed.”

The goal is for people to knit, crochet or sew 100 adult toques, 100 children’s toques and 100 pairs of children’s mittens.

As a finishing touch, contributors are asked to attach a short handwritten message to each garment that says “Welcome to Canada,” or something similar.

“Just something warm and simple,” Conquest says.

She’s already handed a bunch of items over to the Syrian Canadian Council of B.C. which have been given out to refugees in welcome packages. A representative with the council sent her a photograph of an 18-month-old boy receiving his new handmade toque at the airport.

“That was very sweet. I cried.”

Welcoming newcomers from war-torn Syria with a hat or mitts is a small gesture, but it’s one that she believes can make a positive difference.

a lot to them. I had the opportunity to meet him in New York City and sit in on one of his radio shows, which was a huge massive experience for me,” he says.

Pleased with how the mosaic turned out, Dussault has continued to hone his craft over the last two years, his new direction cemented after spending some time in Malta.

“I wanted to really spend some time working on my artwork. I’ve always been an artist but I would use things like the clothing brand to express myself,” he says.

“What I liked about it was the depth of colour you can get on a glaze ceramic was deeper than any paint colour, in my opinion. . . . Not only that, when it catches and reflects light, so when you move past it, it almost dances,” he adds.

Dussault crafts his pieces by combining ceramic tile, paint, grout and vintage porcelain that he’s always on the hunt for.

“That’s the real fun part.

Wherever I’m working in the world I’m always going to ceramic shops and building relationships with tile stores,” he says.

His studio in New York is stocked with thousands of tiles in a variety of colours.

He also has two kilns that allow him to paint tiles with glaze and fire them himself in case he can’t find a specific colour he’s looking for. Dussault has also incorporated what he refers to as “diamond dust,” a type of glitter, into a trademark grouting process he’s developed, setting him apart from his peers.

Dussault has been continuing to exhibit his mosaics. His first show was in early 2015 at New York’s Hoerle-Guggenheim Gallery. Deconstructive/ Constructive was based on imagery from his youth and inspired by comic book heroes.

His second showing was this summer at Ruschmeyer’s, a hotel in Montauk, New York.

Dussault created a series of free-standing mosaic surfboard sculptures in a collection called Off Duty.

Each surfboard featured a Lego superhero or comic book character enjoying an off-duty activity, for example, the Hulk eating ice cream or Spiderman water skiing.

A recent showing in Miami saw the artist experiment with portraiture and he exhibited a piece depicting Andy Warhol.

“The direction I’m going in right now is almost trying to recreate photograph quality through mosaic using different colours,” he says.

Continuing with portraiture, Dussault is currently exhibiting a threeby-four-foot mosaic of Justin Trudeau, entitled “23,” at Vancouver’s Kimoto Gallery, part of its Winter WonderWalls holiday group show.

“I wanted to mark a really important time for Canada in ceramic. Living in the US, you don’t get a whole lot of Canadian news unless it’s really big. . . . I feel like if any other political figure outside of Justin Trudeau was elected that we wouldn’t have heard much in the US, if anything. It would have just been a side note. The fact that Justin was elected, it was international news overnight. . . . He’s someone that’s really captured the world’s imagination right out of the gate,” says Dussault.

“I’m really proud of the way he’s currently been representing us in the short period of time on an international level. Bringing in these Syrian refugees makes you very proud to be a Canadian and we’re one of the countries leading the charge with helping people who need help around the world. I feel like he’s Canada’s version of Barack Obama and he’s captured the world’s attention like no other PM in recent history,” he adds.

His mosaics are continuing to be wellreceived, something he’s incredibly grateful for.

“I’ve been fortunate enough that the majority of my pieces have been selling and people have been enjoying them and it feels amazing when that happens, when somebody is willing to put down the money, buy your pieces and then hang them in their homes or their offices. The validation is incredible because you do put your heart and soul into it,” he says.

Winter WonderWalls, which features works by David Wilson, Rebecca Chaperon and Veronica Plewman among others, will complete its run Jan. 16, 2016 at the Kimoto Gallery, located at 1525 West Sixth Ave., Vancouver.

The subcompact crossover SUV segment may be relatively new, but it has seen massive growth in a short amount of time, thanks to rising demand for these cross-functional vehicles.

Honda isn’t the first manufacturer to enter this new segment, of course, but sometimes the latecomers do a better job. After seeing the success of rivals such as the Mazda CX-3, Nissan Juke and Jeep Renegade, Honda decided to jump in.

Two Millionth Land Rover sells for $600,000 Land Rovers are best when simplest, like steak and kidney pie, or Lego instructions. Especially because, like Lego, Land Rovers tend to fall apart into their component parts when subjected to wear – or even when simply looked at for too long. But then you patch them all back together and it’s back on (or off) the road.

It’s a recipe that’s made

both the brand and the machine a success over the years, a point that was driven home by the price fetched by the two millionth Land Rover built. Sold at auction, the white-hued Defender 90 fetched a staggering $600,000.

That’s a lot for what’s basically an agricultural implement, but most of the money is going to good, Land Rover-y causes. Some of the proceeds will benefit Kenyan wildlife conservation, and some towards the Red Cross.

unique, thanks to its smart, coupe-like look. The sharp front-end has a similar feel to the modern Civic, but the creases along the sides really make it stand out.

A sloping roof disguises the fact the HR-V has rear doors and the handles are well hidden and flush with the body. The rear window ducks under a small spoiler and the tail lights feature angular lines.

Inside, the HR-V feels very upmarket, but again the layout is unique within Honda’s lineup. Thankfully, the displays and switchgear are familiar and make you feel welcome.

Performance To keep things simple, the Honda HR-V is only available with one engine that is derived from the Civic.

While its 141 horsepower and 127 foot-pounds of torque doesn’t make it the fastest in this segment, it is highly refined and responsive, making it fun to drive.

Adding to its peppy nature, the HR-V is available with two snappy transmissions. Like other modern Hondas, it can be equipped with one of the best continuously variable transmissions on the market.

Though it doesn’t have traditional shift points, it does well mimicking them.

A sport mode makes throttle response quicker and faster.

If you prefer to be “in control,” an excellent six-speed manual tranny is also available. Typical for Honda, the clutch is light and the shifts are easy to navigate – something that has always been a trait of a Honda.

Currently, Cadillac markets itself as a performance enthusiast’s brand, with the ATS and CTS sedans both offering great driving characteristics and flame-spitting V models. However, infotainment needs to come up considerably to compete, and the market domination of Mercedes and BMW is hard to fight.

Further, Cadillac still mostly sells crossovers; like Lexus, if they didn’t have the soft-serve vehicles, they’d be sunk.

So no more rebadged Volt, but perhaps a car that looks like an Escalade without the conspicuous fuel consumption. That could be the way forward for the SRX. Mazda ranks as most fuel-efficient automaker according to US EPA Scroll to the top of the list of manufacturers ranked by overall fleet fuel economy, and you’ll find Mazda sitting comfortably at the top of the pack.

As a company that’s long been about fun-todrive character, the news may come as a small surprise: sure, the Miata was cheap and cheerful, but the 2.3-litre four of the original Mazda3 was surprisingly thirsty, as were the turbo rotaries and the turbo-four of the Mazdaspeed3.

However, by throwing R&D money at refining the internal combustion engine, Mazda’s come out ahead with excellent fuel economy across the board.

Regrettably, they do so at a time when United

States fuel prices are at an unbelievable low.

However, the results will at least be of good cheer to Canadians, who are getting hosed at the pumps thanks to a combination of taxation and oil companies offsetting wholesale losses by charging the consumers more at companycontrolled filling stations.

1954 300SL a part of Vancouver history Sold at auction for $1.9 million recently, a beautiful silver Gullwing Mercedes is one of the most expensive ’54 models sold. The 300SL is probably the most beautiful and iconic Mercedes ever made, and this particular example has a great history.

Imported into Vancouver by one Leopold Bentley, a lumber magnate, the car was used as a display model at the fledgling M-D distribution West. It then sold in 1956, and has been maintained ever since by Rudi and Company, a specialist crew over on Vancouver Island.

Vancouver’s car culture, I find, is a hidden affair, with all kinds of interesting stuff tucked behind closed garage doors.

This 300SL is a part of that hidden heritage of speed, now tucked away safely somewhere else.

The Bottom Line If you want a stylish, compact crossover SUV that’s easy to live day-to-day, the Honda HR-V is hard to beat.

Competitors Mazda CX-3 The CX-3 has sharp styling, is fun to drive and the quality of the interior makes it feel more upmarket.

However, like the HR-V,

the engine is great but it would be nice to have other options. Also, the noise that enters the cabin could become tiresome on long trips.
