so happy to see restaurants and homeowners pulling out their patio furniture as Vancouverites prepare to enjoy the city in all its glory.

As you can see from our cover photo featuring Tula House on Quadra Island (designed by Patkau Architects), we’re celebrating the outdoors in this issue. In our story on page 34, we hear from the founders of this forward-thinking firm who share the inspiration behind their spectacular structures. We also share the hottest trends in pools and hot tubs and give you a peek inside a gorgeous West Vancouver home, which I had the opportunity to tour in February. WEST COAST STYLE COUTURE COMES SECOND NATURE FOR WEST VANCOUVER DESIGNER CATHERINE REGEHR. A n o n - d e s c r i p t i n d u s t r i a l a r e a of East Vancouver belies the atelier of one of Canada’s hidden gems, couture fashion designer Catherine Regehr. Sought after by Saudi princesses, film stars, New York’s tony fashionistas and Russia’s elite as well as international retailers, Regehr ironically flies under the radar in her own country. And yet, at this point in her life, she seems quite content to do so.

“Well I’ve never really had a market here (in Canada)—don’t get me wrong—I’d be happy if I did,” laughs the down-to-earth designer who has cultivated a luxury couture niche for over 30 years. “Realistically I’ve always exported 90 per cent of my product right from the beginning, doing market week shows like Maison & Object in Paris or trunk shows in New York, and I’ve never looked back,” she confides.

Yukon-born and raised in Whitehorse, Regehr graduated from Emily Carr College of Art & Design in Vancouver studying sculpture and painting, then took off for Paris to study fashion design at L’École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. She worked as a designer on Seventh Avenue, New York for Anne Klein before returning to Vancouver in 1986 and opening her own business.

Regehr genuinely embodies the simplicity of the athletic outdoorswoman and adventurer; blond, youthfully freckled, she loves to kayak, hike, canoe and is a big camping enthusiast. One would

readily assume that her métier was designer sportswear! What appears as a dichotomy of interests is more a symbiotic one: her love of nature’s untamed North is channeled into textured laser-cut silk leaves and abstract flower blossoms that float from her couture eveningwear. Luxurious throws mimic the swirling waves of a whirlpool and downfilled tufted velvet quilts emulate the look and feel of the softest rock lichen. Last year a pillow she designed for Dior was inspired by observing repetitive ripples in the water.

The luxurious silk fabrics are painstakingly laser-cut, sewn, and pressed by a small group of women (and two male cutters) who have worked with her for years and are as much family as they are the backbone of petite mains behind Regehr’s business. She also works directly with First Nations artisans in the Yukon area to create organic themes and pieces for her home collections.

For Spring 2018, Regehr collaborated with one of her twin daughters, Eva, to design meticulously hand-crafted cocktail and evening wear and expanded on a sumptuous collection of sleepwear, caftans, throws, pillows and newly launched furniture pieces for her home collections. Falling leaf benches and stools are upholstered in techno faille, a durable polyester, and available in 100 different colours.

“I’m so excited about collaborating with Eva because she brings a certain edginess to our designs that is attracting a younger clientele,” exudes Regehr with palpable maternal pride. While they both created the silk T-Neck Dress With Boa Hem, Eva designed the All Over Boa Jacket that adds drama to everything it’s paired with from jeans to evening wear. “I designed the silk Tank Top with All-Over Cherry Blossoms, which is a classic riff on the tank but with a modern twist using laser LIVINGMAG.CA

This home, designed by celebrated architect Brad Lamoureux boasts one of the most spectacular, unobstructed views of Burrard Inlet West Vancouver has to offer.

Designing this structure on this particular lot wasn’t an easy feat, but great pains were

taken to make this “labour of love,” as Lamoureux calls it, happen in order to capture that panoramic view. Completed in 2000 and described by the architect as a “West Coast postand-beam temple,” concrete was used instead of stone to give this classic structure a modern twist. What makes this home unique is the use of timber sourced from hundredyear-old trees. Lamoureux says “to find this kind of wood, we had to talk to timber brokers and seek it out. We found wood that was hundreds of years old on a lake bottom and one LIVINGMAG.CA

Dazzling Downsize “When the clients came to me they had recently downsized from a house to an 800-square-foot double-height ceiling townhouse,� says designer Steph Pollard.

Though excited about their new home, they needed to use smart design to optimize a much smaller area. The answer was installing custom-built efficient storage that would also maintain the beautiful esthetic in their open-concept townhouse.

Closed storage, a counter that would provide extra surface area when entertaining, and open decorative storage that played with asymmetrical design were just a few of the features the clients wanted to see.

Yields 6 to 8 servings FOR THE MACKEREL

12 mackerel filets 3 cups apple juice 1 ¼ cups apple cider vinegar 2/3 cup sugar 1 tsp black peppercorn 1 tsp fennel seed 5 tsp scallions (white parts only), thinly sliced 1 tsp garlic, thinly sliced 1 tsp ginger, thinly sliced Clean mackerel off the bone (alternatively, you can purchase de-boned mackerel filets from a trusted supplier). Line a tray with parchment paper and sprinkle a generous layer of salt. Place mackerel filets onto tray with skin side down, and generously season the flesh of the mackerel with salt. Allow mackerel to cure for eight minutes. Rinse the mackerel in cold water for five minutes, making sure all salt is washed off. Dry mackerel with paper towel. Combine all the remaining ingredients in a pot and bring to boil. Remove from stovetop and allow the liquid to cool completely. Pour liquid over mackerel filets and marinate for 24 hours which will “cook” the ceviche. Drain liquid from mackerel.

FOR THE DRESSING

1½ cups light soy sauce ½ cup tamari 3 ½ tbsp sugar 4 tsp bonito flakes 5 tsp dried anchovy Soak dried anchovy with soy sauce and tamari in the fridge overnight. The next day, bring the mixture to a boil, take off heat.

Add sugar and bonito flakes. Cool completely and strain.

FOR THE GARNISH

1 piece scallions (green part), thinly sliced on a bias 1 Japanese cucumber, peeled.

Cut into a small dice and season with a little salt and sugar. Let sit for five minutes.

TO ASSEMBLE

Crisp up mackerel skin using a butane torch. Dress the mackerel with a splash of rice wine vinegar and olive oil. Slice the fish into bite-sized pieces and arrange on a plate. Sprinkle the mackerel with cucumber and scallions. Drizzle dressing and olive oil over each piece of fish. Serve and enjoy.
