In the foothills of Cypress Mountain, summer school is in session at Mulgrave – and kids actually want to go.

From academics to arts, to outdoor education and the athletics, Mulgrave School offers a smorgasbord of fulland half-day summer camps covering Grades 1 through 12 during the month of July and first week of August.

“This year is our most diverse camp program yet,” says Mulgrave communications manager Laura Darch.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to expand upon their passions and experiment with new activities.”

And unless specifically described as involving technology, Mulgrave is mindful of having screen-free time at summer camp, adds Darch.

Most camps are delivered on campus, but some also include field trips to nearby parks with transportation provided by the school.

As well as day camps, Mulgrave also provides a camp-out experience on their property for children who are ready for their first taste of sleeping under canvas.

“Both our lunch program and after-camp care are popular with working parents,” says Darch.

one of the possibilities,” says Darch.

The most popular summer offerings at Mulgrave are the

two-week musical theatre camp and the science programs, according to Darch.

“Not for the squeamish, our insect investigations for younger students has been requested every year,” she says.

As for a unique camp specific to Mulgrave, Darch says they have a number of camps that focus on the social and emotional aspects of growing up as well as understanding group dynamics.

The camps “Being a Good Friend,” “Philosophy and Social justice” and “Leadership Skills for Inquiry and Collaboration” offer practical skills and strategies for students of all ages.

And when it comes to snack time at summer camp, students can expect healthy options and minimum packaging at Mulgrave.

Summer camps cost $195 for the half-day program and $390 for a full day.

Registration does not close until the night before the camp begins, says Darch, adding it’s always best for families to enrol as soon as they have made their summer vacation plans.

Lights Up provides stage for bright talent

In a church gymnasium in Edgemont Village, kids can train to become the next Jennifer Lopez or Justin Timberlake – the triple threat.

Singing, dancing and acting classes are the cornerstones of Lights Up Musical Theatre

Schools, which offers a variety of summer camps. But you don’t have to be a budding starlet to benefit from the theatre classes. In fact, no experience is necessary to participate.

Lights Up offers half-day, Monday to Friday programs for children ages four to six and full-day options for students ages six to 13, at a cost of $199 and $350 respectively.

In the half-day camps, “Broadway babies” can take their first steps into the world of musical theatre. Children take classes in singing, dance and acting, then put everything together during a performance for friends and family at the end of the week.

For the full-day camps, students are divided by age into groups and take classes from different teachers in singing, dancing and acting. They also showcase their newfound talent for family and friends on stage.

Themed summer camps include Kids Centre Stage! which sees students dive into popular musicals featuring kids in starring roles. For Disney fans, there’s the Under The Sea camp that takes kids on an underwater musical adventure where they make friends with characters from The Little Mermaid, Moana and Finding Nemo. All camps end in a performance for family and friends on the last day.

“A lot of them are working in Vancouver’s musical theatre scene,” says Wight.

For a little taste of everything, Ava offers its Arts Variety Camp, an interdisciplinary session that combines music, dance, art and film.

Taking things to the next level is the Music Mastery Camp, designed for students who want to improve their technique in one discipline.

They perform at the end of the week for their instructor and peers as a culmination of what they have learned throughout the week.

Then there’s the Digital Music Camp, created to help campers discover music in a new way, says Ava Music & Art Centre artistic director Heather Deris. Classes include digital music, songwriting and composition, music media creation and the study of various instruments.

The Arts Variety camp follows a four-course structure which allows campers to pick four fields they are interested in, ranging from musical instruments to dance, theatre and film creation courses, and culminates in a performance showcasing what they have learned at the end of the week.

“This camp is typically chosen by students who have never had any music experience or those who want to try new forms of art. It also popular amongst families who would like to register their kids for lessons at Ava Music in fall, but they are not sure what courses are best for their children,” says Deris.

“This camp is also known for enabling its participants to discover their passion on their own terms.”

Oftentimes, family members will push their children towards the study of a certain instrument, explains Wight.

With the four-course structure, campers can try both the arts discipline that their

parents suggest as well as one they gravitate to.

“Many campers come back and tell us how happy they are that this camp allowed them to find their passion,” says Deris.

While Ava classes are taught by professional instructors, the activities are led by passionate student musicians and camp alumni, enabling the youth in the camp to comfortably connect with the leaders, explains Deris.

So can you learn the basics of an instrument in a summer?

Absolutely, says Deris, adding it may only take a week.

“At our camps, we firmly believe that with the help of a positive environment, professional coaches and personal dedication, anyone can become a musician,” says Deris. “Many of our campers continue playing instruments they picked up during the week, after the camp ends, whether that’s in their own private time or by taking lessons at Ava Music.”

A classic summer camp on Indian Arm

Minutes away by boat from Deep Cove, but miles away from city life there is a sanctuary where kids climb trees and dip their toes in the glacial ocean inlet.

Where seals splash about, their sleek skin glistening in the midday sun – and kayakers are seen gliding along the placid water near the shoreline.

Halfway up Indian Arm, a long and narrow body of water surrounded by cascading mountains, the sound of kids at play and exploring the outdoors carries across Camp Jubilee.

“We just do traditional, regular summer camp,” says office manager Tracy Kiefer, who helps run the show at Camp Jubilee.

Giggling after lights out, canoeing, skit night and campfires – all of your classic summer camp activities are rolled into the fun at Camp Jubilee, which has more than 128 acres of mostly untouched, oceanfront property for the kids to explore.

There’s archery, rock climbing, low ropes and high ropes, where kids climb a statuesque 20-metre Douglas fir tree. If you’re parent and cringing at that picture, don’t worry – you can follow along

from home.

“When they’re up at camp we post pictures like every other day on our Facebook so they get to see their kids having fun. We do little videos and stuff,” says Kiefer.

The kids, however, are unplugged for the week and tuned into nature. Kiefer extols the virtues of the Indian Arm setting. The remote area is home to beautiful hiking trails without the Quarry

Rock crowds.

There’s beach combing, all the while kids are taught about indigenous plants and the different wildlife and marine life in Indian Arm. “Sometimes you can see

the deer swimming,” says Kiefer. “It’s not something you see every day.”

Camp Jubilee programming staff takes full advantage of the water. The older kids kayak down to Granite Falls for some swimming during the overnight trip. There’s always a lifeguard and a safety boat nearby.

Meanwhile, the younger kids camp in the Everglades – a picturesque area on the Camp Jubilee property.

At mealtimes kids scamper towards the mess hall and eat at long wooden tables. Your traditional summer camp fare is served – hot dogs, chicken fingers and hamburgers, etc. – with a fresh twist.

All the food is handmade at Camp Jubilee by a new chef they have hired. Nothing is deep-fried and there are vegan and gluten-free options – plus a salad bar.

Every night there is new menu and “the desserts are to die for,” says Kiefer. For those with food allergies, there is a special diet kitchen where items are prepared to prevent

The drop-off area for summer camp and spot for prolonged hugs from parents is at Cates Park, where kids catch a water taxi to Indian Arm. It’s about a 30-40 minute boat ride depending on the vessel running that day.

The boat ride up Indian Arm is part of the summer camp adventure, as the kids get a tour along the way and some history of the area.

Jubilee’s goal is to send kids to camp – even if they can’t afford it.

“If families can’t quite afford camp we have a little process where they can apply and we help them with some funding, because we don’t want to turn any kid away,” explains Kiefer.

The first camp starts June 29 and they run right through until Aug. 20.

The seven-day camps costs $599, with a rolling registration until they are full. There is also a four-day camp at the end of the summer which costs $349.
