A plan to redevelop West Vancouver’s Inglewood Care Centre to provide 725 units of seniors housing, including 364 long-term care beds, will go to public hearing at the end of June.

Council approved first reading of the bylaws and voted to send the project to a June 23 public hearing at a special council meeting Wednesday, May 27, two days after an original vote on the project was derailed when two council members walked out of the meeting.

Tensions were still evident Wednesday between Mayor Mark Sager, who has been advocating for the project with provincial officials, and Coun. Christine Cassidy, who walked out with Coun. Peter Lambur on Monday, May 25 in an attempt to delay a vote on the issue.

On Wednesday, Lambur remained absent for the vote on Inglewood, walking in to the council meeting about an hour after it started and the Inglewood votes were complete. Cassidy was present and voted in favour of giving the bylaws first reading, but against those endorsing public consultation as adequate and sending the project to public hearing. Coun. Revived Chemtrade proposal going back to public hearing BRENT RICHTER

The future of a North Vancouver chlorine plant is back before District of North Vancouver council.

Council voted 6-1 Monday to reconsider its earlier rejection of a rezoning request

by Chemtrade to allow for continued production of hazardous substances at its Amherst Avenue chlor-alkali plant, where the company and its predecessors have been making the industrial product since the 1950s.

Those opposed to the rezoning at the April 12 meeting cited the inherent safety risk associated with chlorine, which can be fatal if leaked. But two members of council – Mayor Mike Little and Coun. Lisa Muri – also said they could not abide the permanent nature of a rezoning taking away any oversight by future councils when it comes to hazardous materials being produced on the property.

In late April, Chemtrade wrote to the mayor offering several concessions and asking for reconsideration.

Changes proposed include putting a covenant on the property’s title expressly stating that chlorine operations at the plant must end by Dec. 31, 2046 when the company’s lease with the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is up (or sooner if the lease ends before then). Planned safety improvements that were already part of Chemtrade’s proposal would also be enforceable through the covenant.

And the company is also committing to updating the quantitative risk assessment already submitted to council before building permits can be issued, and then

If the company applies to change or remove the covenant in the future, the covenant comes with a guarantee that there will be a fresh review that Chemtrade is using the best available technology.

“The framework is intended to ensure any approval granted is time-limited, subject to enforceable conditions, and expressly contingent on continued compliance and enforcement over time,” Chemtrade vice-president Alan Robinson wrote in his letter to the mayor.

Monday’s affirmative vote from council means that the issue will now move on to a new public hearing.

“I appreciate the applicant hearing our concerns that were raised in the deliberation and responding to them in the way that they have,” Little said. “I have an open mind

going forward. I want to see what the public says about this new potential agreement and whether that changes their views on the matter.”

Coun. Catherine Pope was the lone dissenter. Pope immediately brought up the Garden Grove chemical leak from just a week earlier resulting in 50,000 people being evacuated from their homes in Southern California while authorities dealt with a malfunctioning chemical tank. The incident underscores that the “unthinkable” can and does happen, she said.

“With Chemtrade making deadly chlorine gas in our backyard and shipping it out every single day, concerns about a catastrophe are not hypothetical for North Vancouver,” she said. “I don’t want to be alarmist, but if there is a leak or a big earthquake or rupture or some other unforeseeable event, thousands of people could die.”

Several council members stressed that they were keeping an open mind about their vote pending the outcome of the public hearing, but also reiterated their previous support or opposition to Chemtrade’s rezoning.

“I believe the baseline [risk assessment] did not address other dangers such as an earthquake on site, spills on site and possible car leaks,” Coun. Betty Forbes said.

“And I’m not feeling any relief that they’re going to be addressed going further.”

Coun. Jordan Back, who previously supported Chemtrade’s proposal, noted what was at stake economically for the community.

“I know there are residents who remain uncomfortable with this proposal, and I certainly respect those concerns. At the same time, I also believe it’s important that we recognize the role that industrial businesses and industrial jobs like this continue to play in supporting a complete, economically resilient community.”

The new public hearing has not yet been scheduled. All of the feedback offered to council in writing and verbally at the original hearing will remain on the record for council to consider before holding a future vote.

Prior to Monday’s vote, council heard from six members of the public who remained opposed to the reconsideration.

“You already spent the time. You already spent the money and you already made the right decision. In 2026, 2030 and beyond, having a deadly toxic chlorine plant smack in the middle of a high-density residential area does not make any sense,” Indian River resident Peter Teevan said.

North Vancouver losing millions in port taxes, district says BRENT RICHTER

District of North Vancouver council is recruiting allies in a bid to overturn a piece of provincial legislation that costs local taxpayers millions of dollars every year.

Council voted unanimously May 11 on a motion calling on the Union of B.C. Municipalities to join

them in lobbying for the repeal or amendment of the Ports Property Tax Act. The act, which was passed by the B.C. Liberals in 2004, gives the province the power to artificially cap both the assessment of some waterfront industrial properties and the amount of tax that can be collected from them.

“You get this double whammy

and this incremental impact over many years has resulted in what we’re estimating to be a $4.6 million ongoing loss,” district CFO Rick Danyluk told council at a recent meeting. “What do we do?

We look to the other [property] classes to make up the difference.”

North Shore terminals that benefit from the act include Fibreco, Vancouver Wharves, which is

owned by Pembina Pipeline, and SSA Marine (formerly Western Stevedoring.) Their uncapped industrial neighbours including Seaspan, Allied Shipbuilders, Chemtrade and ERCO Worldwide face property assessments that are approximately 10.7 times higher, according to staff.

The intention of the act was to spur investment in capital projects

on port land by decreasing the tax burden on the terminals. But district staff say the data shows the uncapped properties have spent more on upgrades.

There are 10 municipalities in B.C. with port properties covered by the act. Combined, district staff estimate municipal taxpayers in B.C. are losing about $30 million annually.

The City of North Vancouver is bracing for thousands of visitors in the weeks ahead as Canada Soccer House festivities come to the Shipyards for the World Cup.

At their May 11 meeting, city staff briefed council on both the excitement and disruptions the festival is expected to bring from June 11 to July 19.

Canada Soccer House and the city are planning three tiers of programming, with varying levels of activities and crowds expected. Every game in the tournament will be shown on a 29-foot wide screen in Shipyards Commons and on a series of smaller ones around the site. On Tier 1 days, Canada Soccer is planning live entertainment, athlete meet-and-greets, food and beverage offerings, interactive games and retail pop-ups with official World Cup merch.

While the festival is going on, the Shipyards will be fenced off with three controlled entry and exit gates on the Spirit Trail and on Victory Ship Way, as well as a separate access for Shipyards businesses.

Security guards will be using metal detectors and doing bag checks at the entrances. Uniformed RCMP, private

security and first aid staff will be posted on site.

On Tier 2 and 3 days, the Shipyards will be more open, though still somewhat controlled. The Shipyards splash park will be turned on only on the quieter days.

The entire Shipyards area has a capacity of about 5,000. Hosts will be posted at the SeaBus terminal to warn incoming visitors when line-ups are forming.

“I would love to think that everybody who wants to get in will get in,” said Karyn Magnusson, City of North Vancouver general manager of infrastructure, transportation and parks. “When you have a very high-demand site like this, there will be days when it’s oversubscribed and people will be waiting to get in.”

While Canada Soccer is bringing in some extra seating for the games, it is expected that more popular matches will be standing-room only.

During Tier 1 and 2 days, organizers will be bringing in portable washroom facilities.

Transportation to and from the Shipyards has been a major consideration, with the city and TransLink strongly recommending people arrive by transit, on foot or by bike. Protected pedestrian spaces have been given priority, though Victory Ship Continued on A19

Lynn Valley Elementary celebrates opening of new addition JANE SEYD

Students at North Vancouver’s Lynn Valley Elementary have started to move into six new classrooms that make up a new 145-seat addition to the school.

After two years of construction at the elementary school, the kids are excited, said principal Susan Teegan. ”They’re so excited. They’ve asked for tours,” she said. And students are frequently asking, “When do we get to go into our new classrooms.”

Luckily, the answer is “soon.”

The opening of the addition at Lynn Valley Elementary, celebrated Friday morning, follows another 100-seat $6 million addition that opened earlier this year at Westview Elementary.

The Westview expansion, finished in March, was built using a prefabricated mass-timber system, which enables faster construction than conventional building practices. Prefabricated

Lynn Valley Elementary currently has an official capacity of 295 students (not counting the portables) but an enrollment of 377 students for the current school year.

After the expansion, first announced by the province in December 2022, the school will have a capacity of 440 students.

North Vancouver Seymour MLA Susie Chant praised the work on the addition on Friday, noting it was finished within two months of its expected completion date.

“In this day and age, I’m pretty impressed,” she said.

Chant said a nice feature of the addition is “the building looks seamless. You do not know there’s been an addition.”

Lynn Valley Elementary was last rebuilt in 2004 at a cost of about $4.3 million.

of the new addition will hold classroom space for kindergarten and Grade 1 students, while the second floor will be dedicated to Grade 6 and 7 students, said Teegan.

Construction on a brand new 585-seat, $64-million Cloverley Elementary is also expected to wrap up this summer in North Vancouver.

In a press statement, the province also pointed to the replacement and expansion of Handsworth Secondary, which opened in winter 2022 and replacement of Argyle Secondary, which opened in winter 2021.

The province also pointed to funding for eight new and upgraded playgrounds in North Vancouver in 2017, including playgrounds at Seymour Heights Elementary, Blueridge Elementary, Norgate Elementary, Larson Elementary, Westview Elementary, Lynnmour Elementary, Queen Mary Community Elementary and Brooksbank Elementary.

Molotov cocktail smashes through window of North Vancouver family home JANE SEYD

Police are investigating after a Molotov cocktail was thrown through the window of a family home in North Vancouver last week.

Around 6:30 p.m. May 26, a flaming bottle smashed through the living room window of the home in the 300block of Sixth Street West, where it lodged on the windowsill.

Glass from the smashed window went flying into the living room where a mother was sitting with her two young children, but luckily nobody was hurt.

“I heard this giant crash,” said the woman’s husband, who had been sitting directly in front of the place where the homemade incendiary device lodged just moments before. The man said he was in the kitchen when he heard his wife screaming and ran back to see a large liquor bottle full of a flaming liquid lodged partway through the window.

The man asked that his name not be used because of concerns for his family’s safety.

Hearing the commotion, the family’s upstairs neighbour ran down and put out the fire with an extinguisher.

Luckily the bottle didn’t explode and the fire didn’t spread, the resident said, adding, “It could have been so much worse.”

The resident said he found a liquor cap on the sidewalk outside afterwards, along with a burning sock in a

bush in front of his home.

Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP, said officers are investigating the incident.

The resident – who said his family has lived in the home for a number of years – said they believe they were the victims of mistaken identity, and that the Molotov cocktail thrower was likely targeting someone else. ”We live pretty regular lives,” he said. “Who’s ever heard of a random Molotov cocktail being thrown in North Vancouver? It’s a very quiet neighbourhood.”

Sahak said police don’t have enough information yet to determine if the Molotov was targeted and who that target was, or whether it was random.

“We just don’t have enough information to suggest one or the other,” he said. “At this point, we don’t have a motive.”

Police are asking anyone with information, who may be a witness or who has video of the incident to call the RCMP.

here’s an urgent need for publicly-funded long-term care and housing options for seniors on the North Shore and across B.C. The number of people on wait lists has tripled in 10 years. The population is aging, particularly in West Vancouver, where we’ve actually lost two long-term care facilities in recent years.

Against this fairly desperate backdrop, a proposal from Baptist Housing to build a new 364-bed long-term care home at Inglewood Care Centre aims to help.

In a sane world, West Vancouver council members would be falling all over themselves to see this project approved in a timely manner. But this is not what we saw last week when the project was facing a vote to go to a public hearing.

Instead, two council members physically left the council chamber so no vote could

take place. We don’t know why Coun. Peter Lambur participated in this silly game because he hasn’t uttered a single word about it. Coun. Christine Cassidy said there hadn’t been enough time to consider the project, even though it has been in the works for more than five years.

The truth is that in today’s fiscal climate, it’s a near miracle that any money still exists for a long-term care project on the North Shore. Plans to build similar facilities in other communities have recently been cancelled by the province to save costs.

Whatever beefs these individual councillors have with the Baptist Housing project deserve to be aired and debated in the council chamber, which is what they were elected to do.

To walk out was disrespectful. And if their delay stunt had worked, it would have only put more seniors in jeopardy.

A little FIFA blip won’t slow down storied Lynn Valley Days EVE LAZARUS

You’ve most likely heard (reporter Jane Seyd wrote about it in the North Shore News last month) that Lynn Valley Days is cancelled this year, another casualty of the FIFA World Cup.

It joins the Dragon Boat Festival and Hastings Park Skate Bowl, victims due to their proximity to BC Place and the PNE amphitheatre. The Celebration of Light is reduced from three nights to one because of FIFA-related funding issues. The already overloaded BC Supreme Court has trials displaced because sheriffs are reassigned to FIFA security. The BC Sports Hall of Fame has been supplanted by the FIFA media centre.

Lynn Valley Days was touch and go until about two months ago, Eric Miura, president of the Lynn Valley Lions Club which runs it, told me. But in the end, FIFA has done what only world wars, COVID, a recession, and torrential rain have managed – they’ve scuttled our event. Miura says they were warned that the RCMP who provide security would be stretched thin during the World Cup, but he’d hoped to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

“We always hoped we’d be able to pull it off,” he says. But without written confirmation from the RCMP, they were unable to get insurance coverage.

Lynn Valley Days, a North Vancouver tradition for more than 100 years, is a family-focused, kid-centric event that sees more than 5,000 people attend. The first one

popped up in 1912 to coincide with the opening of Lynn Canyon Park and the suspension bridge.

In the early years, Lynn Valley Days was all about the parade, live music, a community dance, and sports events – everything from high jump to egg races. Prizes varied but could be anything from cash to a box of chocolates or an electric toaster in any given year. In 1946 the annual May Day celebration, which included a maypole dance and the crowning of a May Day Queen, was rolled into Lynn Valley Days.

While different elements of the festival have come and gone, the spirit of the event endures. The Friday night community dance morphed into a gala under a big tent. A couple of years ago, Lynn Valley Days moved

from the end of May to the last weekend in June. The May weather proved too unpredictable, and rain could mean tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue, says Miura. The typically dryer month of June is a safer bet.

The crowd pleaser is the parade. When my three kids were little, we joined the procession up Lynn Valley Road to Mountain Highway representing the Montessori preschool, T-ball (go Dodgers!), and taekwondo.

We were joined by kids from dance and boxing classes, the Freddy Fuddpucker band, adults with bag pipes, war vets from the Legion, jugglers, school bands and floats.

Ever since a new four-way stop has been installed in the centre of Edgemont Village, there has been a marked increase in horn honking, middle finger waving and swearing.

I’ve written to the district asking them to return it to the way it was but to no avail.

Before it was changed, the village was so peaceful, hardly ever a horn tooted! I’m asking fellow readers to voice their feelings to the district.

school as children, “so at our age, it’s a bit late if you don’t have it.”

Through their actions in dismissing the work put into a report by West Vancouver staff and Baptist Housing by not even bothering to listen, and in refusing to commit themselves to a vote, as is their obligation under office, both these councillors displayed that they have either forgotten the lessons of respect they may have learned as children, or that it is indeed too late because they simply “don’t have it.”

WHY DIDN’T WE PUT SOLAR PANELS ON THE NEW REC CENTRE?

Dear Editor:

As I watch the progress being made on the replacement Harry Jerome centre, I am struck by the seeming lack of solar panels.

For any new project such as this with a large non-shaded area and a 50-year life expectancy, why no solar?

I would be most interested if there was a cost benefit analysis done on utility costs including electrical and natural gas versus solar and heat pumps or some combination.

With BC Hydro offering incentives, there may even be an electrical power revenue generating export possibility.

Besides controlling capital costs, ongoing operating costs should be factored in.

Schools and community centres make for an excellent opportunity that should not be missed.

The parade ended at the field next to Lynn Valley Elementary and the kids were let loose with a bunch of cash to spend on bouncy castles, face painting and junk food.

Depending on the year, adults could check out a car show on Institute Road, the beer garden or chat with folks in the booths from places like the library, rec centre or museum.

It’s really a miracle that Lynn Valley Days exists at all. It’s expensive, it’s labour intensive, and thanks to a few dozen volunteers

from the Lions Club and support from the District of North Vancouver and diehard sponsors such as Delany’s Coffee and Saveon-Foods, it’s mostly manageable. But as soon as Lynn Valley Days is over, the Lions start planning for the next one.

After nabbing a 15-year-old riding an e-dirt bike dangerously on a local street, North Vancouver RCMP say their crackdown is ramping up.

Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, officers spotted a teen speeding up Viewlynn Drive while doing wheelies and standing on the bike’s seat. Officers safely stopped the youth a short distance away.

They handed him a $368 ticket for stunting and called a tow truck to have his bike impounded for seven days. Towing and impound fees will run another $400, roughly.

“He was upset,” said Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson. “We called the parents and let them know that their kid was riding their dirt bike in an unsafe manner and the vehicle would be impounded. I think it’s a wake-up call for this individual.”

E-dirt bikes have had an explosion in popularity in recent years, prompting a rash of complaints about reckless and illegal uses of them. That includes speeding, riding on sidewalks and in parks, riding without helmets, insurance or registration, and fleeing from police.

to every parent with kids in the North Vancouver school district.

That has yielded some positive results, but some still aren’t getting the message, Sahak said. Since May 14, 2026, North Vancouver RCMP have issued 15 tickets related to e-mobility offences.

“It’s hard for someone at this point to say

‘I don’t know what the rules are,’” he said.

“Now we’re just targeting the few that are aware and are choosing to ignore the rules and the law.”

There are bikes on the market that provide up to 70,000 watts of power and go up to 150 kilometres per hour. An entry level e-dirt bike starts at about $2,000. That means it’s more than just the kids who need to be put on notice, Sahak said.

“It’s not an issue that we’re going to tackle on our own. We need parents to step in. We need parents to support this because they’re the ones supplying the kids with these expensive bikes,” he said.

There have not yet been any serious injuries related to e-dirt bikes reported in North Vancouver, and Sahak said they want to keep it that way.

“That is our worst fear,” he said.

Sahak said it appears to be only a handful of teens who are the subject of the majority of the complaints now. They should know that officers will be keeping an eye out for them and they may just get their toys taken away.

“We’ve been telling people ‘Hey, enforcement’s coming,’ and now it’s here. And it’s going to continue throughout the summer season,” he said.

Shortall said another key factor in making the project happen is that the school district had the land – previously home to two baseball fields – available. Half of the land has been retained as green space.

Shortall said unlike stereotypes of some modular construction of the past as being low quality, the childcare centre was put together as “a forever build. We were thinking about the next 50 years plus.”

Inside, the building feels spacious and airy with high ceilings and large windows looking out onto purpose-built playgrounds for each of the age ranges of children who will attend the centre.

Gorgeous Natural Pod furnishings, all in child size, complete the bespoke feel of the centre, which welcomed the first children on June 1.

Of the total 116 spaces, 36 are for infants and toddlers, 50 are for kids from 30 months to kindergarten and 30 are for after-school care for school-aged children.

Shortall said emphasis was placed on spaces for the youngest children because those are in high demand in West

Vancouver, and are often difficult to operate because of the high staff-to-children ratios required.

“We anticipate those spaces will probably be taken very quickly because there is such a demand for that age group,” she said.

Priority will be given to children of essential service workers including school district staff, District of West Vancouver staff, the West Vancouver Police Department, fire department and Vancouver Coastal Health, although there will still be spaces available for the general public, said Shortall.

The new childcare centre will also be the home of West Van’s Child Care Resource Centre, which offers a variety of family services, as well as a toy lending library.

The space will also be available for uses like parent group meetings and vaccination clinics.

Rebecca Ashton, executive director of Twig & Owl, said the building is only one part of the project.

“The facility is amazingly beautiful, but the biggest thing that I’m excited about is to build the community within the space,” she said.

The Billy Madison quotes were flying around as famed comedian Adam Sandler went back to school at Sutherland Secondary where he met with students while he was shooting his latest Netflix film.

And to celebrate, students and teachers held an “Adam Sandler Day” dressing up as the actor or one of his famous characters.

“It was a really exciting, busy day for the school community,” said Sutherland principal Mark Barrett. “[The students] were so excited.”

While the filming was happening, students had their faces pressed up against the window or around the margins of the scene, Barrett said. In between takes at lunchtime, Sandler heard students were waiting to catch a glimpse of him, and came out taking selfies with the gathered throng.

“He probably took about 20 selfies with different groups of kids,” Barrett said. “For a guy that probably gets asked everywhere he goes all the time to take photos, he was exceptionally accommodating with his time and did his best to try and make the day special for all the kids.”

But it wasn’t just cellphone selfies.

Several drama students and wrestlers from Sutherland and neighbouring schools had the chance to be background cast members on set with the A-list actor himself.

The experience will be a memory students won’t forget, Barrett said.

The idea of dressing up as Sandler for a fun spirit day came from the student

council back in February, said Grade 12 student Natasha Lee, though at the time, the students had no idea about the coming film shoot. Barrett suggested delaying the day to May. When Sandler came to Sutherland on May 22, it clicked, Lee said.

“I was really excited. He’s a super cool guy,” she said. “He was taking a lot of people’s phones and taking videos and pictures.

Everyone was crowding around. The atmosphere was super energetic.”

While Lee wasn’t in a photo with Sandler, she was still stoked as it was a nice end to high school.

“Getting to meet someone who’s famous and then really seeing they’re down to earth and a nice person was incredible,” she said.

“I’m very lucky to have experienced it.”

When Barrett heard the “Adam Sandler Day” idea from student council, he was a little surprised.

“Because when I think of Adam and the audience he draws, especially with his comedy, he’s a comedian from the ‘90s from my childhood,” he said. “So the fact that he still resonates today is a testament to his staying power.”

Barrett and two vice-principals got in on the fun too, making Billy Madison t-shirts and snapping a photo with Sandler.

This isn’t the first time a big name has made a stop at Sutherland, Barrett said. In 2024, then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took questions from Sutherland students.

“It’s fun that we were able to land a big name in politics and in the entertainment scene to come to our school and get our kids excited,” he said, joking that maybe the Pope will come next year.

North Van man designs planner app for people with ADHD ABBY LUCIANO

James Smith decided to be the change he wanted to see.

Smith, who has attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tried endless apps to keep track of errands and tasks, but none worked the way he wanted them to.

It’s not so much the features in the apps weren’t successful – he could access simple note taking, log moods and personal bandwidth, export plans as PDFs – it was that they were scattered across multiple platforms.

“I found a few of them quite distracting, actually,” Smith said.

And the apps that did work for Smith were offered on a trial/subscription basis, an easy and sometimes expensive process that is often forgotten about until a surprise charge appears on the credit card bill.

When Smith saw those problems echoed by people he was talking to on social media, the North Vancouver resident decided to create Flint ADHD Daily Planner, a productivity app that makes it easier for people to stay on track with everyday tasks.

“They were all saying the same sort of thing,” he said. “A lot of people were asking for a solution … they could use to create notes, add things to a calendar, sometimes just do a ‘brain dump’ where you have to write everything down quickly before you forget anything.”

Opening the Flint app, users can see a stoplight check-in (green, yellow or red).

Picking the colour tells the app how much capacity the user has that day, and the schedule adjusts around that.

JAMES SMITH To create a task or note, the user can either type or use their voice, adding in details including the date, how long it will take, priority and energy needed (if it’s a low effort task in comparison to high focus).

From there, users can see a timeline view of what their day looks like and how many hours left they have for other tasks or free time.

Once the task is completed, it can be checked off the list. And anything that is scheduled but not completed gets moved to the next day, Smith said.

It took Smith months to complete the project. He developed the app on his own, learning the coding basics with a little help from AI to create the bare-bones of the app.

But a lot of time was spent troubleshooting,

he said.

“I found it challenging, but ultimately more rewarding to learn how to do it myself,” Smith said. “And [I wanted] to make sure that I felt like I had ownership over it instead of just using a prompt and sending it out.”

Having an app that does not collect data and does not need a user to create an account were important considerations, Smith said.

Dozens of people have already downloaded the app, which is a welcome surprise, Smith said.

“I wasn’t really expecting anything,” he said. “I’ve had some nice replies and people saying they used it and it works well for them, so that’s really good.”

Breaking the stigma The app’s launch comes during Mental Health Awareness Month. According to the Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada, ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder which can cause hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and difficulty with attention regulation and completing tasks.

Smith said he was diagnosed with ADHD a couple years ago, at age 41.

“It made a lot of sense,” he said. “How I deal with things, or how I navigated the world, even through growing up, it made it make sense.”

There is still a lot of stigma around ADHD, Smith said. Health care company Creyos said common misconceptions about people with ADHD are that they are lazy, lack discipline, or spend too much time on screens. It is also a common misconception that ADHD only affects children.

Smith hopes the conversation changes.

“It’s not a disorder,” he said. “It’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s just that … people’s brains work differently.”

Smith said the Flint app helps him all the time, and he hopes others will benefit from it too.

“I want people to use the app to just take one thing off their plate. I know how busy we all are,” he said. “To be a very simple part of someone’s routine or day is really nice.”

Flint is available on the Apple App Store for $7.99. Smith said he is hoping to work on an Android version soon.

Red and yellow trolleys will be hitting the North Shore streets this weekend for a new festival from North Van Arts called Trolley Days: Heritage in Motion. NORTH VAN ARTS

Trolley Days: Heritage in Motion is set to bring an exciting line up of music, dance and theatre to celebrate the history and diverse stories that have helped make North Vancouver what it is today.

Anna Lynch, executive director of North Van Arts, said the festival was inspired by the now-defunct Arts in the Garden event.

Organizers of the new event are hoping to recreate the same sense of community gathering but through a new format that combines history and storytelling.

“We just wanted to be able to really celebrate not only the rich culture that makes our community in North Van special, but also the history that has created it over the decades,” Lynch said.

The lineup was purposefully curated to showcase the diversity of North Vancouver’s communities. A few of the scheduled performances include Middle Eastern fusion dances by Pooneh Alizadeh and the Academy of Middle Eastern Dance; The Celtic Ensemble, jazz group performances by Jazzillion, hoop dancing from Driftpile Cree Nations performer Petie Chalifoux, hip-hop and Afrobeats artist Ricardo Pequenino, among many others.

Adding to the fun, the festival will also debut an original 20-minute theatrical production titled The Tracks Home, which was inspired by stories and historical figures from the North Shore. The play will

be performed three times daily throughout the festival.

“Our goal is to provide a little bit of education in a really fun way and instill a sense of pride in the community that you live in,” Lynch said.

While performances will take place throughout the Shipyards, another of the festival’s signature attractions will come rolling by a few times an hour. Guided by historical performers sharing North Shore’s past, heritage-style trolley tours will turn transportation into a part of the festival experience, taking visitors back in time while also taking them to the festival site.

Riders can cruise in the trolley starting from either West Vancouver Seniors Activity Centre or Lynn Valley Elementary to the Shipyards destination. If you’re already near the Shipyards, attendees can also ride the trolley around the neighbourhood for 20 minutes. Lower Lonsdale pickup and drop-off is at the Polygon Gallery.

Lynch said these experiences can help instill a sense of community pride in both residents and visitors alike.

“Being able to be connected with where you live is really important to feeling like you belong and feeling engaged,” Lynch said.

Fundraising hiker passes bear on daily climb up Grouse Grind JANE SEYD

A Lower Mainland man has been climbing the Grouse Grind once a day for the entire month of May to raise money for children’s hospitals.

John Buchan said the fact he’s even able to climb the Grind repeatedly is a testament to the kind of care he received 28 years ago when he was born very prematurely in Markham and unable to breathe.

The care he received then at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto saved his life, he said, and he wanted to give something back through a fundraising effort.

“I said, ‘I’m going to climb a mountain,’” Buchan said, and raise money for both Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and B.C. Children’s Hospital.

A recent transplant to the Vancouver area, Buchan said he decided he would climb the Grind repeatedly – before ever doing it.

“I didn’t really know what

Buchan said when saw the bear he stopped and made loud noises to move the bruin along.

Holly Reisner, executive director of the North Shore Black Bear Society, said the best thing to do when encountering a bear on a trail is to stop, back away slowly and tell the bear to go away in a firm voice. Bears are quite timid by nature, she said.

“Let the bear do what the bear wants to do. We want to give the bears lots of space.”

Buchan said while he’s only raised $4,000 of his $31,000 goal the experience has still been worth it.

People engage with each other differently when they’re out in nature, he said.

“Being around people that are physically doing something tough with you and physically by your side step by step, that is a great community thing.”

Usually Buchan hikes the Grind with a group of friends – often people from the church he attends.

The worst day was one where it was snowing and sleeting at higher elevations, he said.

One of the most remarkable was May 24, a Sunday morning, when a black bear crossed the Grind within a few feet of his group of hikers.

“It was a big one,” he said.

Buchan said the bear seemed to come out of nowhere and didn’t appear interested in the group.

“It certainly freaked a couple of people out,” he said.

Buchan said there was a bear warning posted for the trail that day.

For the third time in five years, District of North Vancouver council has snuffed out a proposal that could lead to a ban on Halloween fireworks.

The district’s bylaw restricts fireworks to just four hours on Halloween night.

Residents must purchase a licence from the fire department and may only ignite fireworks in their private yards.

Motions to ban the seasonal amusements failed in close votes in 2021 and 2024. Each time, the proposal has stoked controversy in the community.

Coun. Jim Hanson brought a motion Monday, May 25 asking for the question to be put to a non-binding referendum included in this fall’s general election ballot. Hanson reiterated his previous arguments that fireworks result in stress for pets and wildlife, risk of fires and injuries, and a whole lot of unwelcome cacophony.

“We’ve argued amongst council long enough,” he said. “With that referendum question answered, we will know once and for all the will of the community on this issue, and we can then act accordingly.”

Hanson only found supporters in Couns. Catherine Pope and Betty Forbes though.

Those who have voted to keep Halloween fireworks argue they are, despite complaints to the municipality, good clean fun and a way to bring the community together.

For the majority on council, the issue had simply been debated and decided too many times to relitigate it once more.

“Our council has dealt with this issue, and the last council dealt with this issue, and the council before that dealt with this issue,” said Mayor Mike Little, who called fireworks a “uniquely West Coast Canadian cultural expression.”

Others pointed out that fireworks can be purchased online and delivered legally, meaning a district ban would only stop the people who currently follow the rules.

Several on council criticized referenda as a way of crafting policy.

“We are elected to make these decisions. That’s why we are put into this role.

If people don’t like our decisions, then they can unelect us, said Coun. Lisa Muri.

“That’s what democracy is about.”

Housing vs homes: Vancouver author’s book offers keys to the crisis BRENT RICHTER

It’s something of a homecoming for Jessica Barrett.

The award-winning journalist’s first bylines came in 2008 covering District of West Vancouver council meetings for the North Shore News. Council Cautious On Change, ran one of her first headlines. No Condos For Horseshoe Bay Firehall Site came soon after that.

She was perhaps best known for a 2017 opinion column she wrote in which she explained her decision to flee Vancouver for more affordable housing options in Calgary.

It captured the frustrations of a generation feeling left behind in the housing market, and the piece went viral (which Barrett said left her “mortified”).

In Calgary, she resumed her professional life, started a family and eventually won the gold prize: She and her partner purchased a single-family home. They had the land title and the physical space most millennials have long given up on, but the grass on the other side of the white picket fence wasn’t necessarily much greener.

“Our homes are not logical. They are incredibly emotional. In fact, home is a feeling. Home isn’t really a physical place,” Barrett said. “All of a sudden I had a really cute affordable house but I didn’t have any other aspect of home and I felt a bit like a fraud, to be honest.”

It’s what set her out to write No Place Like Home: The Missing Key to our Housing Crisis, her first-person investigation into the disconnects in our housing policy and what can be done about them.

Today, there is an emphasis on producing greater and greater numbers of apartments, but the approach lacks the “emotional intelligence” that produces communities where everyone – new and old – feels truly at home.

For the book, Barrett travelled to Vienna, Berlin and Zimbabwe capital Harare to find

Barrett is returning to the North Shore on Thursday, June 4 to give a talk at the West Vancouver Memorial Library. The focus of the talk will largely be about encouraging a different approach to the notion of neighbourhood change.

In some ways, Barrett is walking right into the belly of the beast. When it comes to resistance to change, West Van’s reputation precedes itself. Angst about change is natural though, she said, and it should be met first with compassion.

“When we’re talking about changes to people’s homes, they are going to view that as an existential threat,” she said. “Starting from that place of fear and resistance to change and working through that together is something that we could be doing a lot better from an urban planning standpoint, from a policy standpoint and from a neighbour-to-neighbour standpoint.”

Compromise is almost always the antidote to conflict. No Place Like Home seeks to reframe the housing discussion to be less adversarial and more about what we all stand to gain.

If we want schools to stay open, there has to be homes affordable to families nearby. If we want seniors to stay in the community they love, there needs to be homes that are right-sized for empty nesters.

Everyone’s housing needs change over time, even those who think the status quo ought to reign forever. It’s a fact Barrett tragically relates in the book through the experiences of her own family members.

“It’s great to plan that you’re going to age in place in your community and come out of your home in a box. It is very unlikely that that will actually happen for you,” she said.

“It takes one diagnosis, one fall, one illness to suddenly make your housing untenable.”

While she’s not here to wag a finger, the book’s message is one the North Shore’s

No Place Like Home is published by Penguin Random House Canada. communities could stand to hear, Barrett said.

“This idea that we’re going to be able to live in our current communities as they are forever, I think we’re going to start seeing that change very rapidly and the reality come down for a lot of people very, very soon as our communities age. It’s already starting to happen, and so then let’s plan for those alternatives,” she said.

Barrett’s final chapter in the book finishes with a coda to her 2017 column about giving up on Vancouver. It might not go viral but, regardless of who is reading it, she’s going to feel right at home.

TransLink is stepping up with a “very predictable and much higher level of service,” including 10-minute sailings during the events. The city will provide a bicycle valet parking service and robust public messaging for where off-street parking is available.

Residents in the area should also expect a bit of late-night revelry, with seven games scheduled for 9 p.m. As soon as the late-night games are over, staff will turn the screens off and security will start to clear the area out.

“We will ensure that the site will be closed within 60 minutes after the game time, so never later than midnight,” Magnusson said. “We will be working hard to help make sure that as folks are leaving the site, they’re being orderly and mindful of the neighbourhood.”

Some events that would otherwise take place at the Shipyards will have to be moved, including the Lower Lonsdale BIA Block Party and six consecutive Friday night markets, which will be moved to East First Street. The

Rotary Club’s Canada Day celebrations will go ahead on Cates Deck and on Carrie Cates Court at the foot of Lonsdale. The grand finale concert of the North Shore Jazz Festival is being moved to Waterfront Park on June 28.

Magnusson said the city has learned a lot of lessons in hosting large-scale events at the Shipyards since it opened six years ago, “We are looking at this from a very holistic perspective. We realize we’re inviting the region and the world to come to the Shipyards, but we need to be looking at those impacts and those supports across our city,” she said.

“It truly will be an exceptional event.

Our partners at [Canada Soccer] are really planning something that is quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen at the Shipyards. It’s a very high-scaled, high-calibre event that I think will be bound to draw not just the fans of Canada Soccer, but fans of soccer all around in a very free and family-friendly focused event.”

Council members had a lot of questions about how the city and residents would contend with disruptions, but mostly there was an air of great optimism about the events.

“This is a once-in-a-generation, probably a once-in-a-lifetime event opportunity, and I think it’s fantastic that the City of North Van is able to bring this to the region in our public space that’s right on the waterfront,” said Coun. Tony Valente.

In her remarks, Mayor Linda Buchanan acknowledged that not everyone may be pleased with the thought of thousands of footie fans descending on LoLo, but she said it would bring a lot of economic benefits to businesses in the area.

“It’s just a really good opportunity and I just really think we do have to make sure that we can be very responsive to people who are finding it challenging,” she said, expressing faith in the city’s staff. “I think you’re going to plan as best you can to the moment that it is go-time and then we’ll move from there. But I’m super excited to have this.”

Tsleil-Waututh Nation kicks off new artificial turf field ABBY LUCIANO

Athletes from the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) helped get the ball rolling in celebration of the public opening of a new year-round sports field May 22.

“It’s a beautiful day and celebration,” said Chief Justin George.

“Forty years ago this field was talked about, so to remember as a young boy, hearing this talk about a field and when it’s going to happen, here we are.”

The new artificial turf field on Apex Avenue is for Tsleil-Waututh families and youth to connect through playing sports like soccer, lacrosse and field hockey, as well as for holding future tournaments and gatherings, said George.

With the nation’s logo painted in the middle, the new field is also equipped with raised amphitheatre seating, picnic tables and accessible viewing areas. The turf is environmentally safe, the

The long awaited field was made possible thanks to provincial funds for the Tsleil-Waututh, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations as host nations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Each nation received $6

million from the province, supporting the three nations participation in “planning, staging and hosting of the World Cup, as well as long-term community legacies projects,” said Anne Kang, minister of tourism, arts, culture and sport, in a statement.

“The province recognizes the importance of working in respectful partnership on major global events,” Kang said. “By working together, we are ensuring the FIFA World Cup 2026 leaves a meaningful and lasting impact on communities throughout B.C.” George said the facility is about more than just playing sports.

“The true blessing with sport is really about the sisterhoods, the brotherhoods you form, the relationships, learning to win, to lose, setting aside differences before you step on the field, playing for your jersey, your team,” George said.

Since mid-April, the field has been open to the Tsleil-Waututh community and it’s already

seen great use. Last month the nation wrapped up a five-day training program with the Royal Netherlands Football Association followed by mini tournaments with both Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish Nation youth on the field with the graduated coaches.

During Friday’s announcement, soccer coach Dave Thomas gave praise for the new field and said he was excited to see lacrosse and field hockey players get on the turf.

“I can’t wait,” he said, adding that it’ll be nice to bring Squamish and Musqueam athletes as well as the broader community together using the field.

Starting in the fall, the TsleilWaututh Nation field can be booked by local clubs and teams for a fee. More information can be found on the Tsleil-Waututh Nation’s website.

Capilano welcomes newest chancellor ABBY LUCIANO

Finance industry leader and philanthropist Debra Doucette has taken on the chancellor role at Capilano University.

As chancellor, the North Van resident will be part of the university’s board of governors and senate, tasked with helping to make decisions for the university. But she’ll also act as an ambassador for the institution, representing CapU at ceremonial and official events.

Doucette started the chancellor role June 1, and she is excited to be filling those shoes.

“It’s been an honour actually,” she said. “I’ve always believed that universities are places of learning, but they’re also important community anchors and connectors. It’s a great way to be able to support not only students and the people there at CapU, but also the broader North Shore community.”

Doucette arrives at Capilano University with more than three decades of experience in Canada’s investment industry and a portfolio of achievements for her philanthropy work.

She is chair of Odlum Brown, an independent Canadian investment firm. She first joined the company in 1991, shortly after graduating from UBC with a political science degree. Doucette fell in love with the job, working her way up the ranks to chief operating officer in 2000. In 2007 she was named president and CEO, becoming the firm’s first female leader.

“It’s important for women to see representation, and I hope that my role did that. We have a lot of very strong female leaders in our firm. I believe one of the reasons for that is we’ve built a firm based on a meritocracy,” she said.

“We just recognized good work, wherever it came from….

I’m really proud of the fantastic male and female leaders that we’ve produced.”

Her success in the business world has been matched by her commitment to philanthropy and community investment. Doucette sits as a board member for numerous organizations, including Providence Health Care, Substance (formerly Drug Free Kids Canada) and the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization.

Her dedication to community led Doucette to receive the Order of British Columbia in 2021, and in 2016 she received the Joseph and Rosalie Segal United Way Community Vision Award.

“I try hard to wake up every day and add value in the big and little things,” she said. “And for someone else to independently recognize that, it’s very gratifying.”

Doucette said the United Way award hit home for her in particular, as her family received help from their programs when she was younger.

“For me to be involved was a way to pay that back, and it’s become so much more than that,” she said.

R.J. Wallia, chair of Capilano University’s board of governors, welcomed Doucette’s appointment.

“Her distinguished leadership, deep commitment to equity and community stewardship, and dedication to public service make her an exceptional representative of CapU’s values,” Wallia said.

It’s an interesting time for the university, said Doucette, as there’s a new chancellor but also a newly appointed

president in Jason Dewling, who started in that role on March 2.

“I think it’s an educational jewel here on the North Shore,” said Doucette about CapU. “It deserves to be a lot more well-known than it is, and I hope that I can be part of making that happen for them.”

Previous chancellor Yuri Fulmer ended his term on May 31. Doucette’s first major public duty will be addressing the grads and conferring credentials at all five CapU convocation ceremonies running from June 9 to 11.

North Shore has a need for more long-term care facilities Continued from A1 from Europe, Sager and Couns. Nora Gambioli and Scott Snider voted to send the project to public hearing at the end of June.

Updated plans include replacing the existing 230 publicly-funded long-term care beds at Inglewood with a new 364-bed, seven- or eight-storey long-term care facility. All 230 existing beds would remain open during the first phase of construction, while the new long-term care home is being built.

A second phase of the project would include construction of an eight-storey, 161-unit seniors rental housing building on the site, with 20 per cent of units below market rates. It would also include a nine-storey, 200-unit building with seniors independent living.

The project proposal has changed since it was first brought to the District of West Vancouver in 2021. One of the main differences is the original proposal was spread out among five buildings on the site. The new plan consolidates those into four buildings and brings down their height. The plan also includes a larger open space, designed as a “parklike” setting on the site.

Baptist Housing also bought four single-family properties on Burley Drive to provide more of a buffer between the care centre and surrounding neighbourhood.

The original development plan proposal was put forward to the District of West Vancouver five years ago, but was later put on hold by Baptist Housing while the non-profit secured provincial funding commitments and revised plans after receiving community input.

said Baptist Housing CEO Marc Kinna on Wednesday.

It also comes amid a significant need for long-term care on the North Shore.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, two long-term care facilities that had operated for decades closed in West Vancouver. The 75-bed West Vancouver Care Centre was the first to close, followed by the 205-bed Capilano Care Centre.

Despite the opening of Creekstone Care Centre in neighbouring North Vancouver around the same time, no new care facilities have been opened or announced since, leaving the North Shore’s growing population of oldest residents with 130 fewer long term care beds than it had before.

“Inglewood remains the only remaining funded longterm care community in West Vancouver,” said Kinna, adding even if the project gets the green light this year, construction of the new long-term care centre will take until mid-2030 to complete, while the second phase of the project will not be completed until 2034.

Kinna said currently the North Shore is 500 to 800 beds short of what’s needed for long-term care, and median wait times for a bed have tripled in the last 10 years. The problem is only expected to get worse, he said.

Coun. Scott Snider asked what assurances Baptist Housing has that provincial funding for the project is guaranteed, given the recent cancellations of several similar projects.

Kinna said the West Vancouver project is different because both the capital redevelopment and operation of the facility will be done by the private society. In contrast, the projects cancelled were provincially owned and operated, he said.

Kinna said Baptist Housing runs 21 other seniors’ care centres in B.C. and has a 62-year track record. “Senior living is all we do,” he said.

Cassidy asked Kinna if Baptist had considered building an urgent care centre on the site, which she said was also needed. Kinna replied that urgent care is not within the scope of facilities the non-profit operates.

Cassidy also voiced concern that neighbours hadn’t been given enough time to find out about the project before the vote on Wednesday.

An irritated Sager replied, “Just so it’s perfectly clear, The sign on the property has been up since Dec. 1. There is no opportunity for public input at the setting of a date.”

West Van students bring home world robotics championship title LIZ MENDES

In a packed convention centre in St. Louis, Mo., a group of West Vancouver teens were doing what no Canadians had done before.

Last month, a team from West Vancouver Secondary’s Ten Ton Robotics program brought home a world championship title, winning the Middle School Tournament Championship at the VEX V5 Robotics Competition, the world’s largest youth robotics event.

“It’s like the Stanley Cup of robotics,” said Sophia Purohit Singh, parent and coach with Ten Ton Robotics. “Students spend the entire year designing, coding and rebuilding their robots before they even make it to the world stage.”

But the win wasn’t easy. Throughout the year, the boys were pushed to their limits, having to design, build, test and program their own robots before battling through regional, provincial and international qualifying rounds.

and Ricky Chen had to face kids from more than 50 countries at the America’s Center Convention Complex in St. Louis.

Students were asked to think fast on their feet, building robots capable of completing complex challenges, including coding rounds and driver-controlled matches that demanded a lot of teamwork.

Together, the boys programmed, designed and strategized before hitting a home run on execution, advancing through three days of qualifying and elimination matches before finally claiming the championship title at the world stage.

“When they won, they ran onto the stage with the Canadian flag,” Purohit Singh said. “A lot of these kids come from immigrant families, but they felt so deeply proud to represent Canada….

To see them become the first Canadian middle school team to win the title was incredibly emotional.”

Woman whose life ‘unraveled’ after fender bender awarded $1.1M JANE SEYD

A North Vancouver woman whose life unraveled after a minor rear-end collision has been awarded $1.1 million in damages.

The decision, handed down May 20 by the B.C. Court of appeal, more than doubles what Kristina Mariotto is entitled to. A lower court judge previously found she should receive only $378,000.

According to the court, the collision at the centre of the case was a minor fender bender. On July 6, 2018, Mariotto’s stopped vehicle was struck from behind at low speed by a car driven by Joan Rowntree. Mariotto, who was 50 at the time of the crash, drove herself home and did not immediately seek medical attention.

But a judge in B.C. Supreme Court found that Mariotto’s life “substantially unraveled” after the collision, leaving her “seriously and demonstrably” incapacitated. The judge accepted evidence that Mariotto became mentally scattered, fatigued and emotionally distressed after the accident, struggling with focus, daily functioning and relationships.

Before the accident, Mariotto had worked steadily for years, was physically active, played tennis, golfed, cycled and salsa danced with her husband.

She also had a number of pre-existing health conditions, according to the court decision, including Addison’s disease, a rare disorder affecting the adrenal glands, and hypothyroidism. The main issue in both the original trial and appeal case was to what extent Mariotto’s deterioration was caused by the accident vs pre-existing medical conditions.

Rowntree, the woman who was responsible for the fender bender, died before the trial.

Her estate’s lawyers argued that Mariotto’s post-accident decline was largely the product of her complicated medical history rather than the collision itself. The trial judge rejected that argument but also declined to fully accept Mariotto’s position that the accident caused a concussion. Instead, he accepted a psychiatrist’s diagnosis of somatic symptom disorder – a condition in which a person’s genuine belief in their symptoms produces impairment far greater than might be expected from the underlying physical injury.

On that basis, the trial judge concluded it was highly likely Mariotto would have ended up in the same condition regardless of the accident, triggered eventually by some other minor mishap. He reduced the amount of damages awarded to her by 75 per cent accordingly.

But the appeal court disagreed with that reasoning.

While the panel of three judges accepted that Mariotto’s psychological vulnerability was real, they said the evidence did not support putting that likelihood as high as 75 per cent.

Writing for the panel, Justice Heather MacNaughton pointed out that Mariotto had been in earlier car accidents without suffering similar consequences, and had more recently fallen while walking her dogs without developing the symptoms she now lives with. That history suggested she might well have gone through life without ever encountering whatever would have triggered her present

condition, she wrote.

The appeal court therefore reduced the deduction for pre-existing conditions to 25 per cent.

It also ruled the trial judge made an error by applying the reduction to Mariotto’s out-of-pocket expenses, which included past costs already incurred.

The final award from the Court of Appeal includes $150,000 for pain and suffering, approximately $246,000 for past lost wages, roughly $471,000 for future loss of earning capacity, approximately $254,000 for future care costs, and just under $18,000 for out-of-pocket expenses already incurred.

On the south corner of East First Street and St. George’s Avenue once stood Quang Hob’s Laundry.

Discriminatory laws and exclusionary practices that severely constricted the lives of racialized immigrants meant that operating a laundry was one of the only opportunities for employment for many Chinese Canadians.

According to city directories, Quang Hob’s Laundry was in business from 1913 until 1966, when it was bought by Low D. By 1975 it became Tapping Furniture Ltd., and in 1986 it transformed into the Rusty Gull Neighbourhood Pub, which still exists today as The Gull Bar & Kitchen.

One year ago we said goodbye to Julian Syme, a Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Army Veteran & Friend.After a brief battle with Cancer he left us on June 3, 2025. We miss him everyday but cherish the memories we have with him.

Mary Wright

Mary (Mum, Nana, GG) at the remarkable age of 97 has passed away. She was so treasured by her family - son Mark (Cathy), daughter Jennifer (Bob), grandchildren Kate (Chris), Taylor (Ethan) and Sean, along with great-granddaughters Lennon, Fern, Bobbi and Lily. Her beloved Chuck will be meeting her on the other side with a bottle of Chanel No. 5 and the best, tight hug.

She was the last of her generation, predeceased by her siblings Pere, Ivan and Celia, beating the family age record of 94 with room to spare. In her last years, she would often reminisce about her life growing up in New Zealand, her parents' fish shop and being part of the Croatian community there.

She met Chuck on the Vancouver stop of a world tour with her brother Ivan. She and Chuck raised their family amongst what would become lifelong friends from every part of the globe. She was a fantastic daughter-in-law, an accomplished seamstress and an adventurous cook. She and Chuck started running at the age of 40 and ran 6 marathons together. They biked, hiked, travelled, and loved each other so much. We are comforted knowing they are together again.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Patricia May Johnson (née Morrisett e) July 24, 1933 - May 6, 2026

“I had a good life.”

Born and raised in Vancouver, Pat graduated from Kitsilano High School and the UBC Physical Education program, where she met her husband Doug during summer school. Pat and Doug were long-time residents of West Vancouver, building a home and raising their two children in Copper Cove.

She could always be counted on to host, be it New Year’s, Christmas, Non-Gourmet, or Bridge. When not at home, she and Doug were travelling the world, skis, golf clubs, or a tennis racket in hand, visiting family and friends across North America, Europe, and Oceania. West Coast summers were spent at “Camp”, the family cabin on Gambier Island, while winters were for skiing at Grouse, and in later years, Whistler. Tuesdays, however, were reserved for a round at the UBC Golf Club, where she was a member for many years. A forever dog lover, Pat had many furry friends through the decades, finding a true kindred spirit in Bandit, the one who was there for her when Doug could no longer be. A passionate reader, there was always a stack of books on the end table and one in her hand. Pat said goodbye on her own terms, as she did with most things in her life, on May 6; a peaceful ending to a life well lived.

Todd Pope

Todd Pope unexpectedly passed away on May 15, 2026, at the age of 56.

Todd will be deeply missed by his loving wife Caroline; daughter Hannah; son Jeremy (Anna); mother-in-law Berenice Speed; brother-in-law Chris (Rachel); parents Al and Dorothy Pope; sister Shannon Confortin (Mark); nephew and niece Jack (Alisha) and Ella; and his younger brother Jason Pope.

Known for his humour, kindness, and love of life, Todd brought laughter and warmth wherever he went. His friendships meant the world to him, and he was fortunate to have formed countless meaningful and lasting connections throughout his life. Todd had a gift for making people feel welcome, valued, and appreciated, and his loyal circle of friends is a true reflection of the person he was.

Todd moved to Squamish in 1993 and quickly became an integral part of the community. He volunteered his time with Test of Metal, Squamish Trail Society, Tourism Squamish, local triathlons, Sea to Sky Nordics, RCMP COPS and Auxiliary, Squamish BMX and BMX Canada, just to name a few.

A Community Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 3–4 PM in the Main Library Building of the Capilano University Squamish Campus.

Todd’s laughter, light, and generous spirit will never be forgott en.

Harold Michael (Mike) Stickland

After nearly 94 years of good health, adventures, and happiness, Mike passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026. Mike will be lovingly remembered by his wife Angela; his sons Bruce, Brent (Melissa), and Blair (Mara); stepchildren, Brian (Lani), Valerie (Armin), and Leslie (Eric); grandchildren Michael, Gregory, Jeremy (Claire), Sophie (Chris), Simone, Marc, and Gabrielle; great-grandson Beckett; and his sister Belle. Mike was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia, in 2006.

Mike’s adventure started on June 28, 1932, in the once thriving but now abandoned east coast of Vancouver Island logging town of Rock Bay. With his parents unable to agree upon a name for their firstborn child, the nurses called him Michael after St. Michael’s Mission Hospital, where he was born. Despite his parents finally deciding on the name Harold Beckett Stickland, it was Michael that stuck as his name throughout his life.

Mike grew up in the 1930s and 1940s on the rugged coastal landscape of the islands and waters between Campbell River and Alert Bay, living in a float home in the bays of Quadra, Cortez, and Sonora Islands and Bute Inlet before finally pulling the float home ashore and homesteading in the Pearse Island Group near Alert Bay. His family were typical coastal pioneers, making a living commercial fishing and logging from the waters and lands that surrounded them, and finally by setting up their own family mill on Pearse Island. Mike participated in these activities from an early age while at the same time taking all his schooling up to grade 12 by correspondence. It was from these formative years that Mike developed his work ethic, sense of optimism, earnestness, and his deep appreciation for the natural world.

In 1950, Mike ventured off from his north coast life to Vancouver, where he attended UBC in the commerce program, graduating in 1956. At university, Mike was an active member of Psi Upsilon fraternity and the Masons of B.C., met what were to become his lifelong best friends, and learned to play bridge. Bridge was to become a lifelong passion that included many tournaments and reaching the level of life grand master. After UBC, Mike had a successful career in business, starting at BC Tel and branching out into the newly developing computer industry, where he excelled at sales through a combination of hard work, optimism, and earnestness.

The UBC library was also where Mike met his first wife, Patricia. Mike and Pat were married in 1959 and had 47 wonderful years together, where they welcomed three sons whom they raised on the North Shore. They enjoyed exploring the world together and playing competitive bridge. Mike was actively involved in all aspects of family life and his son’s activities. Mike never lost his love of the BC coast and the natural world and ensured family activities included camping, boating, and his true passion, fishing. One of his many legacies will be his love of the natural world that he passed on to each of his boys.

Mike found love again in 2007 when he married Angela. Mike was warmly welcomed into Angela’s family by Angela’s children, her many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mike and Angela shared a love of family, travel, and bridge over the many years they were married. It was also during this time that Mike reconnected with the Masons of BC through Capilano Lodge No. 164 Mike lived a long life full of family, friends, love, and adventure. He was a man known for his easy-going nature, optimism, kindness, and his claim to never having been skunked fishing.

A service will be held to remember Mike at Boal Funeral Chapel at 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, at 1:00 PM on June 6, 2026

Valerie Ann Horvath

September 1946 - May 17, 2026 It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Valerie Ann Horvath of West Vancouver, BC. She passed away peacefully at her home on May 17, 2026, at the age of 79 years. Valerie was born in Revelstoke, BC, in September of 1946. The youngest of five children to Robert and Estelle Harvey. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Len Horvath, and her daughter, Susanne Horvath.

Valerie is survived by her son, Karl Horvath and his wife Carolyn; her grandchildren, Susanne, Hannah and Finn of Australia; Also survived by her brother Steven Harvey (Shelby). She was especially close to her nieces, Glenda McLean (Cleve, Ashley, Erika & Carlee) and Kylie Morris (Brent, Sydney & Lauryn Morris). And many nieces and nephews who held her dear. Valsey was loved dearly by many friends and neighbours who were just like family.

Valerie aka "Valsey," was known for her warm smile, infectious laugh, and witty sense of humour. She was a good listener, encouraging, and always positive! She had an incredible eye for detail and also referred to herself as "Virgo Val." She enjoyed watching hockey on TV and softball games on GameChanger. She was known for her incredible meals, baking, canning and sewing. Valerie was always very caring and seeking ways to help others, even people she didn't know! Valsey had a huge heart, so supportive and kind. She delivered a container of her prized Christmas baking to 14 people this past Christmas! Christmas was an exciting time of year - she always had the best gifts for our tacky Christmas gift exchange.

Valerie attended UBC and completed her Early Childhood Education degree. Worked at Telus as an operator until she retired in 2007. She was the proud owner of Quantum Lighting, a business she shared with her late husband.

Valerie will be remembered for the love she poured into her family and the joy she brought to those around her. We will miss her deeply. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the B.C. Cancer Society.

Sheila Kerin passed away peacefully at Hollyburn House on May 24, 2026. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Sheila was one of four daughters. She was predeceased by her sister Marie and is lovingly remembered by her sisters Mildred and Doreen, as well as sisters-in-law Jean and Paula.

Beloved wife of Stephen Granger and adored Mother to Christina and Heidi Granger.

August 5, 1933 - May 24, 2026

In 1958, Sheila travelled to Montreal to marry the love of her life, Harry Kerin (1933 - 2016), whom she had met in Dublin. Together they built a full and joyful life, raising their three children - Una (Rob West, daughter Laura), Joni (sons Cliff, Kyle, Andrew, and Ryan), and Brian (Kevin) A career transfer brought the family to Vancouver in 1974, where they quickly became part of the community. Sheila and Harry enjoyed rich lives shaped by their banking careers, their many friendships, and their shared love of sport.

A gifted natural athlete, Sheila proudly represented Canada internationally in both field hockey and seniors tennis. Through her sporting life, she formed many long-lasting friendships.

Sheila was an active and devoted member of both St Stephen's and St Anthony's parishes. She also leaves behind cherished grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in Ireland.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of Hollyburn House for their care and kindness.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 11:00 at St. Anthony's Parish, 2347 Inglewood Ave, West Vancouver.

July 18, 1946 - May 15, 2026

We are saddened to announce that on May 15, 2026, Audrey passed away peacefully after a long journey with Alzheimer’s. However, the last few years are not how we would like to remember this fierce, funny, beautiful, smart, lively, hero of a Mom and Grandma. To us, she will always be smiling brightly, enjoying the beauty of a life well-lived with Stephen by her side, laughing and dancing.

Audrey was the beloved eldest daughter of Thomas and Phyllis Betteley and sister to Cynthia (Barrie) Barnes and Robin (Mischa) Betteley. She was born and raised in Pointe Claire, Quebec, and lived in Montreal until her early adult years. Audrey was very proud to be a McGill graduate, having completed her degree in Physiotherapy in 1968. She maintained friendships and connections with her alumni group that extended throughout her life.

In 1968, Audrey moved west to Vancouver, BC, to start her physiotherapy career at VGH. Through mutual friends, she met Steve Granger and the two married in 1970, with daughters Christina (Lee) and Heidi (Sergio) to follow in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Audrey and Steve loved the North Shore, and our family was blessed to be raised in North and West Vancouver, with the mountains of Whistler as a second home. Audrey and Steve travelled extensively with a special love for Maui and Yellow Point Lodge.

Audrey was the best Mom and Grandma we could ask for. Her children and grandchildren (Sienna, Olivia, Tristan, and Matteo) were the light of her life, and we always knew how much she loved us. She was a devoted friend to those close to her (namely, Nerys, Judy, and many more) and was passionate about helping in the community through her time as a physio as well as at Victim Services. Her strength and empathy for those in need or in a crisis and feeling violence, will be deeply missed. She also took on painting later in life and created wonderful landscapes for friends and family.

There are not enough words to spell out all of Audrey’s many gifts that made the world a better place. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Amica Lions Gate for their care in her last few years.

In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be made to Alzheimer’s research. The celebration of her amazing life will be held at her home, 4074 Sunset Blvd., North Vancouver, on June 27th (the wedding anniversary of Audrey and Steve) at 4:00 PM. As Audrey would off en say, “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.”

Jean Dorothy Taylor passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, having lived an interesting and full 100 years.

Jean was born in 1925 in Landour, India, to United Church missionaries, Benjamin and Annie Smillie. At the age of 9, she was sent to board at St. Leonards School for Girls in St Andrews, Scotland. In 1940, she was evacuated to Canada at the height of the German bombings of the U.K., travelling on her own by steamship from Liverpool to Toronto, where she finished high school at Ontario Ladies College.

Jean always wanted to be a nurse. After high school, she enrolled in the BSC Nursing program at the University of Toronto, which was only the second year the program was offered. She graduated in 1947 with her entire class of seven women.

Foreshadowing her love of babies and children, she then returned to the U.K. and did her midwifery qualification. Despite the rigors of her nursing studies, she found time to meet and date the love of her life, Linton. They were married in 1949 and lived their married life in Toronto, Montreal, and West Vancouver.

Jean’s kindness, patience, and love of children served her well in the many positions she took on over the years. She nursed with the Victorian Order of Nurses in Toronto. She taught preschool children with special needs in Montreal. In West Vancouver, she was a dedicated volunteer in the children’s nursery at the church she loved, St. David’s United Church.

Jean never sat around! She played tennis until her 80’s. Her favourite pastime was walking. In West Vancouver, she was a fixture on the Ambleside Seawall. After Linton’s passing, Jean moved to Mississauga to be closer to her daughter, Jane, and traded the Seawall for the paths along Lake Ontario.

She was interested in everything and up for any new challenge. She went whitewater rafting in Golden and hot air ballooning with her son, John, in Calgary.

Most importantly, Jean was a kind, compassionate and caring person. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, dedicated to and deeply interested in the happiness of her entire family and the many friends she made over the years.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Linton. She is survived and will be sorely missed by her children, Alistair (Sharon), John (Anne), and Jane (Rick). She was the beloved Nana of nine grandchildren, Angus, Murdoch, Genevieve, Katie, Jill, Bridget, Rachel, Claire, and Jane, as well as seven great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Sheridan Unit at The Village of Erin Meadows in Mississauga for their patient and wonderful care.

In keeping with Jean’s wishes, a simple funeral service will be held at a later date in West Vancouver.
