Fordrivers,astraightshotdownGrand Boulevard Westisabouttobeablastfromthepast.

OnJuly14,North Vancouver Citycouncilnarrowly passedaplanthatwillclose the roadbetween13thand 15thstreets,whichwillconnect theadjacentgreen space on GrandBoulevardtoRayPerraultPark.

Councilalsovotedtodirectstafftoexaminethefeasibilityofbuildingtwotenniscourts andonemulti-use sport courtinthearea.

ButCouns.ShervinShahriari,Don BellandHollyBack dissentedonthe roadclosure,saying theywereconcerned abouthowthechangewillaffectvehicletrafficinthearea. Thethreecalledforfurtherconsiderationofthematter.

Beforediscussionon the roadclosure, staffpresented an updateonthecommunityengagementandplanningfor what’scalledthe“eastsideconnector”–whichwilleventuallycreateanactivetransportation routefromGrand Boulevard Westtotheunder-construction Casano-Loutet overpass.

West Vancouver rollsout two new wildland fire trucks

West Vancouveris rollingouttwo newtrucksthatwillhelpcrewsknock downfiresinthedistrict’ssprawling wildlandinterface.

LastThursday, West VancouverFire & Rescueunveiledtwo Type5wildland firetrucks,whichcomeequippedwith hundredsoflitresofwateronboard and “pumpand roll”firefightingtechnology aswellashigh-poweredmobilepumps, hosesandbladderstobattleblazes in difficult-to-reachplaces.

In2018and2019,thedepartmentput togetherawildfire plan that led tothedistrictprocuringstructureprotectionunits, whichcreateahumiditybubbleduring wildfires,protectingup to 30homesfrom embershowers,hesaid.

Oneeventinparticularraisedthe alarmforHoward:thewildfirethatripped throughahectareofforestandbrush aboveHorseshoeBayinthesummerof 2023.

Atthetime, West Vandidn’thave wildfiretrucks,so somewerebroughtin by DistrictofNorth VancouverFire and RescueServices.

“Itwasamuchmoreeffectiveextinguishmentofthefireandmanagingofthe fire,”Howardsaid.“Andsowewerelike, ‘Ifwehadthosetrucks,wewouldhave probablydealtwithitinamore expedient way.…’Firesdoubleinsizeeveryminute, so you reallywanttogetonitquickly, if youcan.”

After recognizingthat gapinthedistrict’swildfire responsecapabilities,the departmentbegan theprocessofprocuringthenewtrucks.

Massivewaterbladdersallowprecise forestfirefighting

Eachofthe Type5wildland fire trucks costaround$600,000. They’rebigenough tocarryfirefightingequipmentandacrew, butnimbleenoughtotravelthrough a roughwoodlandenvironment.

Ontheoutside,thetrucksaredecorated withdecalsfromSkwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (SquamishNation)artist Xwalacktun, depictingthe TwinSistersmountainpeaks andaThunderbirdtoprotectthe region.

Inside,eachvehiclecarries500litres of waterandanonboardpump.

“Youcandowhatwecall‘pumpand

roll,’whichmeansyoucanstartitup, engagethepump,andasyou’redriving, wehaveajoystickinthecab,and we can spraythefire aswe’removing,”Howard said.

Becausetherearenohydrantsinthe forest,thetrucksalsocarrylargebladders thatcanhold6,800litresofwater.They canbe filledbyhelicopters,orpumpedfull fromnearby water sources,making them potentiallymoreeffectivethanhelicopters.

“Ifwefillthebladder,wecanbealot moreprecise,”Howardsaid.

morningwhentheywerecalledtoputout afire consumingthewoodenviewingplatformattheHorseshoeBayLookout.

AssistantchiefJuniorHarveysaid thetruckperformedevenbetterthan expected.

“Thatwasgooduseofit,forsure.The crewthatuseditwasverypleasedwith itbecauseit’smucheasiertohandlewith lotsofwateronboard,andthehandlines theyareusingaremucheasiertohandlein theforest,sotheywereabletomakelight workofit,”hesaid.“Theywereveryhappy. Theyweresendingmepicturesthenext morningwiththetrucks.”

Onlyyoucanpreventforestfires

Butwhenitcomestomitigatingtherisk ofwildfires,technologypalesincomparisontowhatpreventionmeasurescando. Incommunitiesthatlivesoclosetolush forests,thatincludesmakingyourproperty more resilienttofire risk,andmakingsure nottostarta fire yourself.

“Thetrucksareagreattool,butpreventionisthebesttool….Besafewhen you’reoutintheinterfaceandaroundyour house,”Howardsaid.“Inahousethat’s abuttingtheinterface,that’swhere a lotof the fires arecaused.”

Inthecoastalrainforest,it’sfarmore likelyforhumanstocausefires thanlightning,hesaid

“Ifyoudohaveafire, callus,letusknow thatyou’reseeing fire orsmoke,andwe’ll getthereanddealwithit.Evenifyouthink the fire’sout…callus. We wanttoknow aboutit,”Howardsaid.“Thebestthing forusistogetthatcallandgetthetrucks thereandhavecrewsonitandputwater onit.”

LocalMountieswere called tothescenearound2:45a.m.

Saturday,July26,after receiving reportsofadistraughtfemaleat LonsdaleQuaynearthebusloop.

Whenpolicearrived,they locatedawoman“whohadinjuries consistentwithbeingassaulted withanedgedweapon.”

Duringtheinvestigation,two morewomenwerefoundonthe second floorabovethebusloop, where oneofthemhadsimilar injuries.

Policesayit’sallegedthatthe threefemaleswereinvolvedin a disputeandanassaultoccurred. Twoofthethreefemaleswere

takentothehospitalwithinjuries fromminortoserious.

“Astheinvestigationisinits veryearlystages,therearealotof unanswered questionsthatpolice areseekinganswersfor,”saidCpl. MansoorSahak,North Vancouver RCMPspokesperson,ina press release.

“Whatwe do knowisthat therewasadisputebetweenthe parties,whowereknowntoeach other,beforetheallegedassault occurred.”

Metropauses review of wayover-budget wastewaterplant

Metro Vancouver’sboardofdirectors hasdecidedtohalt,fornow,anindependent reviewintohowtheNorth Shore WastewaterTreatmentPlant went$3billionoverbudget.

Theboardannouncedthe reviewasan accountabilitymeasurelastyearwhenthe updatedbudgetfortheprojecttriggered adelugeofblowbackforthe regional authority.NorthShoretaxpayersareseeing theirsewagebillsgoupbyabout $590for thenext30yearsjusttocoverthecost overruns.

OnFridayafternoon,Metroissued a releasesayingits reviewwouldnotproceed untilafterMetro Vancouver’slawsuitwith formercontractorAccionais resolved.It isn’tscheduledtogototrial untilMarch 2027.

“Aftercarefulconsideration,theboard hasdecidedthepublicinterestisbest servedby resolvingthelegaldisputewith thepreviouscontractorbefore undertaking the review,”saidMetro Vancouverboard chairMikeHurleyinthe release.

AccionaissuingMetroformore than $250millionforbreaches of contractual obligations,includingwrongfullyterminating theprojectagreement.Metroiscountersuingformorethan$1billionallegingAcciona is responsiblefor“material”breachesofthe design-buildcontract.

RandalKaardal,aseniorlawyerwith HunterLitigationChambersandtheperson chargedwithoverseeingthenow-paused review,wasalsoquotedinMetro’s Friday afternoon release.

“Thelitigationisapublicprocess,and oncethedisputewiththeformercontractor

hasbeen resolved,theMetro Vancouver Boardandthe reviewerwouldbeinabetter positiontocompletea reviewonanyoutstandingquestions,”hesaid.

North VancouncillorcallsdecisionBS

Districtof North VancouverCoun. CatherinePope,whohasbeenone of the mostoutspokenadvocatesfortransparency andaccountabilityonthe wastewater fiasco, calledthedecision“bullshit.”

“Ohmygod,you’rejoking,”shesaid.“I’m callingBSonthat.Thatisnotinthepublic interesttodelaythisanylonger.”

Popesaidshe’salwaysacknowledged that,becauseofthelawsuits,somethings wouldbe“outofbounds”fromany review orpublicdisclosure.But,sheadded,the region’s residentswhocontinuetopaythe costsdeserve toknow howthosedecisions weremade now.

“Whatwe’relookingforhereisthe processes that Metrousesandthe way itsgovernancefunctionsarenotworking, clearly.Otherwise,wewouldn’tbeinthis mess,”shesaid.“Howdidthisgetso out ofcontrol?That’s why Idon’tthinkthat we needtowaitforthelawsuits.Ifwedo,they’ll besettledoutofcourt,quietly. We’llnever knowwhatwent wrongorwhodidwhat, andwe’llnevergetanyanswers.They’llall sign[non-disclosureagreements]andthat’s probablywhatthey’reaimingforrightnow.”

Popesaidthisisanothersignthatthe provincemustpullrankandforcetransparencyoutoftheboard “toensurethat Metro Vancouverisusingtaxpayers’dollars effectively.”

“Ithinkit’sjustanothertactictoblock anykindoftruth finding,andit’sjusttotally unacceptable,”shesaid.

Twoofthenextbigpiecesof North Vancouver’s LynnCreek neighbourhoodmaysoonbe putintoplace.

DistrictofNorth Vancouver councilvoted unanimouslyJuly 21toadvanceDenna Homes’ proposalfortwotowers–34and 30storeysinheight–containing 683strataand rentalhomes,plus retailspace,officesandachild carefacilityalongwithapublic plaza.

CollectivelyknownasSeylynn Centre,theprojectwouldcover theentireblock betweenFern StreetandHunterStreetonthe eastsideofMountainHighway.

If approved,thewest tower willinclude338 strataunits, 12,000squarefeetofcommercial/retailspaceincluding a 4,100-squarefoot restaurant andalmost17,000square feetof office.Theeast towerwillinclude 345 rentalhomes,72ofwhich willbeofferedatbelow-market ratesforhouseholdsearning

renderingshows how SeylyynCentremightlookupon completion.

Today,thelandis largely vacant,havingbeenusedfor parkingandconstructionstaging fortheotherSeylynndevelopmentsacrossthestreet,but it wasformerly23single-family homes.

tryingsince2017 toget a redevelopmentoftheproperties before councilforavote.

Becausetheprojectwill requireanamendmenttothe officialcommunityplan,itwill first besubjectto a publichearing, likelycomingin September.

Councilmembershad mostly praiseforthelatestiterationof Denna’sproposal.

Coun.JordanBack saidhe believedtheprojectwillbring alotofamenitiesappreciated byeveryoneinthefast-growing neighbourhood.

“I seeit reallyasoneofthe transformativeprojectsforthe LynnCreektowncentre. It really bringsathoughtfulmixofhousing,commercialactivity, child care,publicspace –whichisone elementI really appreciateabout thisproject– and significant financial benefits tothe district,” hesaid.

Severalcouncil members drew

specific attentiontothepublic plaza,includingCoun.Herman Mah.

“Thisisthebestpart.The plazaisgreat. I think(the architects)did agreatjobonthe design.Ilovetheopenspace. Thereare twolarge towersbut theseparationbetween them still opensuptheviewstoour mountains.Ithinkitwillbeagreat gatheringspacefortheentire community,”hesaid.

MayorMikeLittlewas concernedaboutthe “tremendous number”ofone-bedroomapartments– morethanhalfofthe entire project–buthesaid,on thewhole,theprojectwas ready forthepublic’s say.

“Idoappreciatetheefforts thathavebeen madetoboth keepthesitequiteopenand permeablethroughoutit,plus alsothe rentalcomponent and non-market rental component. I thinkthose areall laudable,”he said.“Ilookforward tothis comingbacktothe community inthe formofapublichearing.”

New ‘cringe’ Lynn Canyon signs warn ofcliff jumpingdangers

Thatisoneofthenewsigns theDistrictof North Vancouver hasinstalledin LynnCanyon Park to discourageyoungergenerations fromcliff jumping.

Youngerdistrictstaffmemberscameupwiththeideaof incorporatinglingousedbyGen Z andGenAlphato reinforce age-oldwarningsinthe park where localrangersandfirefighters have been responding to multiple callsforcliffjumpersin distress.

“We’rereallytryingtobestrategictotarget GenZ’sandGen Alphastocommunicatewith theminawaythat resonates withthem,”saidMike Danks,fire chief fortheDistrictofNorth VancouverFireandRescue Services.“Ithinkthatage group between12and22,those are typicallythepeoplethatwe’re seeinggettinginjuredthere.”

Lastsummera 21-year-old mandied aftergoingoverthe TwinFallsin LynnCanyon.Fire crewsatthetimesaidtheman hadbeenunderwaterforatleast 20minutesbeforebeingpulledto shore.Fivedayslater,amanwas rescuedinthesameareaattemptingtocliffjumpwhileintoxicated. InAugustthatyear,a17-year-old malefrom Windsor,Ont.diedafter fallingfromacliffinthepark.

Recently,North Vancouver firefighters rescuedamanwho dislocatedhisshoulderafter jumpingintothe90FootPoolin LynnCanyon.

Dangerousconditions

Withthehighnumberofvisitorsandcalls, first respondersare cautioningparkgoersaboutthe dangersofcliffjumping.

Unstableandslipperyslopes, fluctuatingwaterconditions,hiddenhazardsunderthewaterand currentsaresomeofthepotentiallydeadlyriskspeoplecanbe

exposedto,Dankssaid.

“Youhavealotofthingsworkingagainstyou,”hesaid.“You’re immediatelyimmersedintovery coldwater,whichcancauseyou togasp,causeyoutoinhalewater, which restrictsyourbreathing.”

Danksspeaksfrompersonal experience.Ashewasmaking hiswaytojumpfromthecliffsas a17-year-old,heslippedonwet rocksandslicedhishandon a largepieceofglass. Yearslater,he stillhasascar.Heshareshisstory toshowhe’sbeentheretooand that“it’snotworthit.”

“There’snothingmoreisolatingthanbeinghurtandlooking upfromthecanyonandseeing thatthere’snowayoutforyou, andthat’sa reallyscaryfeeling,” Dankssaid.“It’sjustaperspective thatpeopledon’tthinkabout.”

Metro Vancouverispausingits independent reviewoftheillfated NorthShore Wastewater TreatmentPlantuntilafterthe lawsuitsbetweenthe regional governmentandfiredcontractorAccionaare resolved.Independent,indeed.

TheonegestureMetroboardhasmade towardaccountability–which many criticizedasinsufficientinthefirstplace–won’t happenuntil2027,attheearliest,whenthe matterisscheduledtogototrial.

Unsurprisingly,thisistotallyunacceptableforthoseurgentlydemandingaclear understandingofhowthisprojectwentso farofftherails.

Thetreatmentplantwillalreadygodown as oneofbiggestfiscalfiascosin our region’s history. Butwithhundredsofmillionsof dollarsinlawsuitshanginginthe balance, thingscouldgetawholelotworsestill.

We imagineitwasontheadviceofMetro Vancouver’slawyersnot toproceedwith any reviewthatcouldprejudicethegovernment’scaseattrial.

Thatisifitgoes to trialatall.Farmore likely,thepartieswillsettleoutofcourtand keepthetermszipped upinnon-disclosure agreements–exactly whathappened a decadeagowhen theSeymour-Capilano WaterFiltration Projectbecamemiredin similarsuits.

Settlingoutofcourt is fineforprivate businesses, but Metro Vancouverisour regional levelofgovernment.Itexists owinga perpetualdebtoftransparencyand accountabilitytous.

If the mistakesthatdoomed thewastewatertreatment planttothisfateare being repeatedwith othermegaprojectstoday,we needtoknowaboutitnow.Notafter,at a trial,orworse,neveratall.

Yearslater,Itookmydearwriter-musicianfriendJeffthere,a Welsh curmudgeonwithoutmuchof a filter, who wonderedloudlywhythere was“damp string”onhis meal.Hewas referring to mungbeansprouts.Despitethistragedy, weenjoyedthebackgroundlivemusic

andthelaid-backvibe.

We’refortunatethatwehavesomuch livemusicdottedaroundourcity,fromthe undergrounddowntowngigs to outdoor events.Someofus will havegone tothe VancouverFolkMusicFestivalearlier this month,one of themoststunningvenues for a musicfestivalintheworld.It’s ahomegrown,happyvibe.

Whereverweare,abeach,adivebar, a hippycafé,livemusicisgood for thesoul. We cansenseit,butwhatdoesit reallydoto us, and how?

Whenwe listento livemusic,wenot onlyhear it,butwefeelittoo. We absorb allthefeelsfromotherpeople,from themusicitself,andfrom reactionsand energyaroundus.Itallcountstowards a

kindofcatharticexperience.

We takeinthecreativityoftheartists whoperformin frontofus,sharing their talents.It’satension reliever,despiteextraneousfactorslikedampstringonourmeal oranover-excitedcrowdmember. Youknow whoyouare.

It’stheimperfections that makeit unique. We’renowimmersedin the digital revolution,whereAIistakingover, orat leasttryingto,anditfeelsgood to hold onto what’s realwheneverwecan.

TheShipyardsontheNorthShore featuresaneclecticmixofbands through thesummer,culminatingin the Shipyards FestivalonSept.20.Allgigsarefreeto attendinoneof the mostbeautifulsettings intheworld. We canlistentomusiclooking

Evidenceshowspaidparkingisgood for businesses,improvesaccessandencourages carpoolingandotherformsoftravel. Ifyour concernisaffordability,howquicklywe forgetthatfamiliespay$13 roundtriptotake thebus,butheavenforbidweask driversto payafewbucksforacovetedparkingspotat aworldclassbeach.

KennethAmaral,59,waschargedunderthe B.C. Wildlife Actwithonecountofintentionallyfeedingorattempting tofeeddangerouswildlifeandonecountofplacingan attractantthatcouldattractdangerouswildlife,followingan investigationbytheBCConservationOfficerServicein2022. Amaralpleadednotguiltyandfacedatwo-daytrialon July9and10.

TheinvestigationbeganinApril2022 whenamanliving neartheendofKeithRoadin West Vancouver reported a strangerleavingpilesoffoodaroundhispropertyabove CapilanoRiver.

TheneighbourconfrontedAmaralaboutthe foodpiles andthebearsandcoyotesthey wereattracting.Amaraltold themanhewouldn’tleavefoodthereanymore,butmotion sensorcamerasplacedbytheBCConservationOfficer Servicenabbedhimleavingmore“baitsites”onatleast four otheroccasionsoverthefollowing week, thecourtheard.

WhenaconservationofficermetAmaralface to faceat thesite, theaccusedgaveavoluntary statementinwhichhe admittedthathehadbeenleavingfood.

InherclosingargumentsincourtonJuly10,Crownprosecutor Veda Kenda drewspecific attentiontotheimpacts thatfeedingwildlifehas,withthetrailcamerascapturing imagesofcoyotesand multiplebearsatthebait siteswithin the first 24 hours.

Whiletheinvestigationwasongoing,theconservation officer encounteredoneofthebears, shenoted.

“Anddespiteallofhistraining, he wasunabletoget thatbeartogoawayfromthebaitsite,andfor his safety, hemovedaway,”shesaid.“[He]testifiedthat,basedon his experienceandtraining,henoticedthatintentionalfeeding ofbearsleadstohabituationandfooddependency,andcan cause publicsafetyconcerns.”

Theareanearthe baitsitesisfrequentedby dogwalkers, hikersandanglers,sheadded.

“Ofcourse,thepresenceofthewildlifeinthatareawould causeamajorsafetyrisktothat public,” shesaid.

Incourt,Amaral deniedthat hisactionsweremeantto attractdangerousanimalsthatweren’talreadylivinginthe woods.

“Ididnot haveany directcontroloranykindofmanipulationasfarasbeingableto bringtheanimalstothefood,” hesaid.“AsIsaidinthepast,it’sjusta matterofI put itout – whatever cameandateit,ateit.”

Healsocharacterized hisbehaviourin more benign terms–adesiretosharefood,thatwouldotherwisegoto waste,withanimals.

“I have been feedinganimals my entirelife–familypets, straysandalltypesofwildlifeincluded.Itgivesmea sense ofcalmandfulfillsanurturingsidethatI have,” he said.

North Vancouver ProvincialCourtJudgeRobert Hamilton, however,said he couldnot“believethatexplanation”andfoundAmaralguiltyon both counts.

“Thesheervolumeofmeat–rawchickeninoneofthe photographs andthesausagelinksandgroundbeefin anotherofthe photos–that’snotleftoverfoodfora single person.…Thatisahugeamountoffood,” hesaid.“There are differentwaysofgettingridoffood, but onewayofgettingridoffoodthatisillegalistoleavetheselarge pilesof foodinaforestwherethe person knows bears,coyotesand other wildlifeare presentorarelikelyto bepresent.”

Giventhenumberofinstances,Kenda said shewould beseekingabout$24,000in fines forAmaral,although she added,sheunderstoodthatitwould be unlikelyAmaral would havethemeansto pay.

Amaralwas dueback incourtonJuly22to begin his sentencing hearing, however, hedid not show up.Hamilton said iftheCrowncouldnotgetintouchwith himto schedule anewsentencing hearing dateby July29,thecourtcould issueawarrantfor hisarrest.

Thenew0.22-hectareparkhasagentle sloping lawn for playandsocialgatherings andaplaygroundthathascedarstructures,along,concreteslide,asaucerswing andaclimbingwall. TopoParkalsohas seatingoptions,pathwaysandlightingfor safetyandaccessibilityalongside treesfor comfort andcooling.

“Thisbeautifulnewneighbourhood parkis morethanagreenspace.It’s a reflection ofourcouncil’scollectivevision forahealthier,morevibrantandbetter-connectedcity,”said CNV MayorLinda Buchanan.

Buchanansaidtheparkdeliversonthe city’s2010parksmasterplan– avision fordevelopmentand renewalofparksand openspaces–whichidentified theareaas havingacriticalgapinparkaccess.Infall 2021,thecityasked for communityinput onthepark’sdesign,andconstruction beganlastsummer.

Nowthatthedayhasarrived,Porter andherdaughtercometotheparkmultiple timesadayenjoyingthegreenspaceand playground.LittleAmarasaidherfavourite featureistheslide.

Havingtheparkisvitalintheneighbourhoodasitbuildscommunity,Portersaid.

“Everyonegetstocomeout,meeteach otherandmakefriendsandhaveasense ofcommunity,”shesaid.“Eventhough weallliveindifferentplaces,weallcome togetheratthesamespot.”

On Aug. 1,1914,the fifthannualregatta of theNorth Armcamperstookplace at Woodlandson Burrard Inlet. Knownasone of thesignature events of thesocialcalendar, specialsailings were assignedtobring largecrowdsofviewers over from Vancouver.

The programincluded24events, includinga varietyofmen’s andwomen’s races,witha special band playingthroughout. The dayconcluded with adance, andthe last boat ferried people back toVancouver at midnight.

Roadway connects two parks

Staffsaidtheyaremaking “goodprogress”onthe designandarecurrently preparingforthepublic engagementprocess,which shouldhappenthisfall.

Whileanalyzingthecorridor,staffsaidtheysawan opportunitytocloseGrand Boulevard Westbetween 13thand15thstreets. Currently,GrandBoulevard Westonlyaccommodates southboundvehicletraffic, asthenorthboundlaneis reservedforbicyclesandothernon-vehicle traffic.

ThatsectionofGrandBoulevard West offers“limitedvalue”tothe roadway network,and removingvehiclesfromthat sectionwouldsimplifyintersections at13th and15thstreets,makingthemsaferfor everyone,staffsaid.

Currenttraffic countsarelowonthat sectionof road,andthereis“adequate capacity”onGrandBoulevardEastto accommodatethechange,staffsaid.

Duringdiscussion,Backsaidshewants toseeatrafficstudydoneinthearea becausesheseesbackupseveryday.

“Idon’twanttovotetobuildaparkon thatonesideand keep itclosedwhenwe verymuchcould use thatsideofthe road for our localtraffic,” shesaid.

Regardingaddingtenniscourts there, Backsaidthisisn’ttherightareaforthe citytobeinvestingmore resourcesinto parks.

“Ithinkthere’sotherareasinourcity thatweshouldputthismoneytowork,” shesaid.“Idon’tliketoconcentrateitallin onearea andIdon’tthinkthat’sfairto someoftheother residentsinthecity.”

Shahriarisaidhewasgoingtovote againstthechangenotbecausehedoesn’t liketheidea,butbecausetherehasn’tbeen enoughconsultation.

“Wejusthavenothadthat,”he said.“I don’tthinkthecommunityatlargeisaware ofthis.Ihaven’t seenanycommunication being receivedbyanyofthe residents nearbyorelsewherewhomayhave some inputintothis.”

ButMayorLindaBuchanan saidthat closingthesectionof roadispartofcreatingasafepublic space,andacontinuous connectionbetweenthecitycentreand thatneighbourhood.

“Itisaneighbourhoodmanypeoplefrom allacrossthecitycometobecauseof the GrandBoulevard[park],”shesaid.“And addingassetstoit, suchastenniscourts andthemulti-sportcourt,addsanotherelementthatspeaks to replacingwhatwe’ve lostintermsof the developmentof someof thecourtsthatwe’veseen.”

It is with sadnessthat Murray Good’sfamilywould liketoannouncehis passingon February22,2025. Thereare severalniecesandnephewswhowill miss their uncle forhis uniquepersonality. Murray wasthe eldestoffour childrenof Howard andLillian (McFadden) Good. He is predeceased by his brothersAllanand Richard.

Many knew Murray as theirfamilydentistinWest Vancouver,aninstructorofdental studentsatUBC, or throughhismanycommunity activities,suchas sailingand Speed Watch. Murray’s daily walk betweenoffice andhomewhile attiredinhis dental smockisa canonicalWestVan image from the70s90s.

Murray was borninWinnipeg,MB, on December22, 1938. Hisheart, however, waswiththe West Coast, in Vancouver,whereGageandhe movedin1968, and wheretheyenjoyed57 yearsoflivingonthe coast.

Hisfamilywouldliketothankallthe staffatAmica Lions Gate fortheirwonderfulcare.

RalphTownsend “Papa” wasbornonApril 27,1931, in Moncton, NewBrunswick,and madehisway west at theageof 17,drawn by thecallofthe wild and the promiseofa rugged life.

Over theyears, Ralphworemanyhats—logger, butcher,hunter,rancher—butabove all, he wasa true cowboy.His love fortheoutdoorsanddeep commitment to family definedhim. Ralphwas aman of grit,humour,heart, andold-fashioned values. Whether workinghardorsharingstoriesarounda campfire,helived life with authenticityand astrong senseofpurpose.

He is survived by hislovingwifeof54years, Joan Townsend;daughter Colleen Townsend; stepchildren Debbie Nelson (James), Mark Cook,and David Cook (Melanie);eight grandchildren;and sixgreatgrandchildren. He also leavesbehindhisbeloved sistersJoan Acorn(Dave) and CarolynSewell (Graham), as well as numerousnieces,nephews, and many cherished friends.Ralph was predeceased by hisbrother,John.

Ron,an insuranceagent for6 decades,feltitwas time to retire at87! He andhisbusinesspartner invested in many agenciesacrossCanadaand into California. In addition to other businessventures, Ron volunteeredhistimeontheboardofdirectors at Theatre Under TheStars forover30 years. Golfing, fishing, theatre and travelling/cruising were his hobbiesandpassions.

Ronispredeceased by Marie, hisbeloved wife of70 years. Survived by hissister, Wendy (England), daughters, Jane (Rob),Gill (Mark) and Mandy,nine grandchildrenandnine great-grandchildren.

Atruegentlemanwithclass anddignity.Withhis wickedlydry Britishsenseofhumour,healwayskept us in stitches.

Ourheartsare broken, but we feel solaceknowing Dadhadanamazingand healthylifeand is reunited withMum.Their statushasbeenelevated fromfirstclass passengerstofirst-class angels. We imagine themplayfullydancingacrosstheirown heavenly cruiseship’s dancefloor.

With muchsadness, we announcethat Ruby passed away peacefully on July 17,2025, with herdaughter ather side.She waspredeceased by herhusband Carlisle (Leslie)John. Sheissurvivedbyher daughter Alicia,son-in-law David,and grandson Marcus.

Ruby wasa residentof NorthVancouver for56years and wasa long-time Operating Room nurseatLions Gate Hospital.She wasanavidtennisplayerand had apassion forcraftsand agoodbook.

She wasdeeplyloved by her family and friendsand will foreverbemissed.

Pathad scratchedand clawedhisway to sobriety many timesinhislife, sometimesfor severalyears, onlytobedrawn backintothedarkpit that is drug abuse.

When sober,Pat wascharismatic, hilarious,and clever;peopleweredrawn to him. Hisverve and energy filledthe room.

Ourworld has lost averybright light. Hispassion wasmusic -hecouldplayalmostany instrument,itwas seeminglyinstinctive to him. Patissurvivedbyhis parents, Annand Thomas Waite, hisbrother,Daniel Waite, andhislongtime loving companionDanielle McMorris,who washis rock andourhero.

Valeriepassedawaypeacefully at theNorth Shore Hospicejustone monthafter celebratingher90th birthday. Born to Harold and Dianne Millsin Hampstead Heath, England, sheattended several boarding schoolsintheLondonarea, formingmany lifelong friendships and aloveoflearning.During summervacations,sheoftenstayedwithher Aunt Lottieand cousins, Mary and Jean.

In 1956,at theage of21, Valerielosther fatherand onlythendiscoveredshehad twohalf-siblings, Judith and Michael.In1958, sheimmigrated to Vancouver sponsored by her cousin Mary andher husband, Dr.WilliamDoughty, whohadpreviously settledthereafter WWII. Thusbegan aclose lifelong relationshipwiththe Doughtyfamily.

Valeriebeganher careerat theNWTelephone Company, then happily becameastewardessatCP Air. She then found her callinginthe travel industry, workingatseveral Vancouveragencieswith dedicationandprofessionalismuntil her retirement in 1995. Duringher workingyears, Valeriemade great friendsand travelledthe world,developing asense ofadventure whichcontinued long into her retirement.

Valeriebecameanactiveandengaged memberof her community,participatinginnumerousactivities, including volunteeringher time at theSilverHarbour Seniors’ Activity Centre andother local organizations.She alsoservedon theStrataCouncil of Woodcroft Apartments, wheresheproudlylived for 48 years. Shehad an independentand resilient spirit,which allowedher to remainin herhomewell into her lateryearsdespite facinghealth challenges.She had many closefriendsand neighboursatWoodcroft whoprovidedher with muchcare and supportoverthe years. Valeriewas stylish,organizedand meticulous in everything she did. Shewas well read with adeep interest in politics, historical literatureandespeciallythe British RoyalFamily.

Valeriewas lovedandappreciatedbyheronlysister, Judith and wasa very kind,beloved second cousin of theDoughtyfamilychildren, Mary,John (Pam) and Seanand will bedeeplymissed. Shewill be fondlyremembered forher thoughtfulnessand interest in thelives of theDoughtygrandchildren, Coral(Todd),Joel (Amanda)and Jarris (Bethany) and theDoughtygreat-grandchildren,Lilyanna, Zackary and Jasper.

Ourfamilywouldliketorecognize and thank Valerie’scaregivers andespeciallyher friendswho supportedher over theyears, as well as the compassionatestaff at theNorth ShoreHospice.

NSCR’s CommunityIncome TaxClinicempowers eligiblelowerincomeindividualstofiletheirincome tax returnwiththesupportofqualifiedvolunteers registeredwiththeCanadaRevenueAgency.This ensuresthatindividualscanaccesstheirtax refunds alongwithmuch-neededgovernmentbenefitsif eligible. Avisibledisplayofwhathappenswhen volunteersinthecommunitycometogethertosupport theirneighbours.
