The byelection for the MP seat left vacant by Jonathan Wilkinson hasn’t been officially called yet, but candidates are already hitting the doorsteps in North Vancouver.

Wilkinson, who held the seat for the Liberals since 2015 and was handily re-elected in 2025, recently stepped down to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union.

Now the unofficial race is on to fill the vacancy in what has been considered a safe Liberal seat for the past decade.

This Saturday, the Liberal Party of Canada handed the North Vancouver campaign to replace Wilkinson to party insider Braden Caley.

Caley, who is originally from Richmond, has worked behind the scenes for the Liberals for the past 20 years, most recently serving as deputy chief of staff to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Meanwhile, Conservative candidate Stephen Curran, a commercial lawyer who has worked with businesses on trade missions and who ran against Wilkinson in the last federal election, is eager to challenge the Liberals’ grip on the riding.

The Green Party has also recently put forward a candidate – environmental scientist Shelley Luce, who has worked with the Sierra Club as well as other nonprofit Continued on A17

West Coast Modern icon Binning House listed for $5.25M BRENT RICHTER

The most architecturally significant home on the North Shore – and all of Canada for that matter – is listed for sale.

West Vancouver’s Binning House is on the market for $5.25 million. It was the home of artist and architect B.C. Binning and is considered the earliest example of West Coast Modernism.

The 85-year-old two-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot house sits on a 12,800-square-foot lot overlooking the ocean on Altamont’s Mathers Crescent.

Its highest value may be the bragging rights its future owner will have. The listing boasts that it is Canada’s only privately-owned National Historic Site.

The West Coast Modern movement born there sought to make buildings fit within their natural environments rather than dominate them. It popularized design elements that remain in use today including floor-to-ceiling windows, flat roofs and open concepts. From the salons he hosted in his living room, Binning inspired other noted artists and architects, including Ron Thom and Arthur Erickson.

Because of its influence on contemporary design, the West Coast Modern League has called the Binning House a “Rosetta Stone” and the most important architectural home in Canada.

“This house represents the first of its kind,” said Steve Gairns, chair of the league.

“It’s a revered piece of our West Coast Modern story and it stands as a testament

In its later history, the Binning House has been closely watched by heritage advocates.

After a bitter tug-of-war through the courts, the home was listed for sale in 2015 and purchased by West Vancouver realtor Jesse Saniuk.

At the time, it had been facing years of neglect. Saniuk had the foundation, roof membrane, plaster, plumbing, wiring, windows and doors restored and in 2024 Heritage B.C. recognized him and art conservator Cheryle Harrison with a conservation award for their revival of Binning’s own murals adorning the interior

and exterior walls, which took hundreds of hours.

When Saniuk bought the property, it was mainly because he was attracted to the location and ocean view, he said, but the painstaking work to save the Binning House from rot showed him the value heritage advocates see in it. As a realtor, Saniuk said he too sees Binning’s lasting influence in the design of modernist homes still being constructed today.

“It all comes back to this and there’s some surprising similarities even 80 years apart,” he said.

Saniuk said he is selling the Binning House now because he is ready to move onto another heritage project. Last weekend, he offered the home up for West Coast

Modern Week tours.

“I felt good that I was able to show it off and get the feedback from everybody. The feedback was fantastic about the restoration work and even the stuff that I was nervous about,” he said.

The listing however is causing anxiety and disappointment for the Binning House’s supporters, said Gairns. The biggest worry is that it will end up in the hands of someone who may dilute or damage a shared cultural asset by making changes to Binning’s greatest legacy. The property is covered by a heritage designation bylaw that only protects the house from demolition or major structural changes but advocates still worry.

“The historical stature of this house requires that we take extra care with its character and materiality and that we respect the window that it offers into the daring design explorations and the new ideas about modern living that Binning was so instrumental in advocating for,” Gairns said.

Saniuk said it would be his dream for the buyer to be a philanthropist from the art and architecture world who would make it a museum or artist residence or even just a piece of their own private collection.

That might not end up being the case but Saniuk said the buyer will most certainly be someone who understands what the Binning House represents and the work that’s gone into saving it.

“I think that anybody who buys it is going to be buying it because they love what they see that’s already there,” he said.

‘SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY’

West Vancouver man charged following Norgate break-ins JANE SEYD

A 35-year-old West Vancouver man has been charged with property offences following an investigation into thefts in the Norgate neighbourhood and the execution of a search warrant where stolen items were recovered.

Between April 23 and 25, North Vancouver RCMP received several reports of break-ins to homes and thefts from vehicles in Norgate.

The break-ins occurred at several

properties on Redwood Street and Fernwood and Cottonwood crescents.

Among the items pinched were laptop computers, portable speakers, a lawnmower, an air compressor and in one case, even a custom knee brace belonging to the resident, according to court documents.

Credit cards belonging to homeowners were also stolen.

Residents also told police that their credit cards had been used following the break-ins. In particular, stolen credit cards were used at the Shell and Petro-Canada

stations at Capilano Road and Marine Drive.

Following the execution of a search warrant June 27, police arrested 35-year-old Louie Muehlfarth of West Vancouver. At the time, Muehlfarth had a JBL speaker and laptop computers, allegedly stolen in the Norgate break-ins, in his possession, police say.

He was later released on a promise to appear in court.

On Monday, July 13, Muehlfarth was charged with three counts of break and enter, two counts of unauthorized use of

a credit card, two counts of theft under $5,000, and one count of possession of property obtained by crime.

“These charges are the result of a thorough investigation by our frontline officers and investigators, who worked diligently to identify the suspect and gather evidence,” said Cpl. Mansoor Sahak, media relations officer for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Property crimes have a significant impact on victims, and we encourage residents to continue reporting suspicious activity to police.”

Landslide risk down in District of North Vancouver, report finds ABBY LUCIANO

The risk of landslides threatening homes near escarpment slopes in the District of North Vancouver has been reduced thanks to mitigation work, according to a recent report.

On June 22, BGC Engineering Inc. presented municipal council with an update to their district-wide landslide risk assessment and provided recommendations for both property owners and the municipality to consider. The last district-wide report was done by BGC in 2010.

Lauren Hutchinson, senior geotechnical engineer for BGC, told council that the updated assessment was done now so the district has the latest information as provincial housing targets are expected to bring more housing to the area.

For property owners, those recommendations include managing stormwater, fill and yard waste, and monitoring conditions of retaining walls and swimming pools.

For the district, BGC is recommending the municipality develop a monitoring program for slope conditions, update risk assessments at individual properties as conditions change and across the district every 10 years, as well as providing education to residents on how to reduce landslide risk near slopes.

In the assessment, engineers looked at life-loss risk at 124 properties at the crest of escarpments and 149 homes at the bases of them across the district, including in the Berkley, Pemberton Heights, Westlynn, Riverside West, Mosquito Creek, West Hastings and Capilano River neighbourhoods.

Engineers assessed risk tolerance into three categories: broadly acceptable (not requiring mitigation), tolerable (risk is small and manageable, but work can be taken to reduce it) and unacceptable (requires mitigation).

BGC found that 85 per cent of the 149 homes assessed at the base of escarpment slopes have lower risk than in previous studies. The assessment also states the risk for 41 homes decreased from tolerable to broadly acceptable risk, while all 124 homes at the crest of escarpment slopes were assessed as broadly acceptable.

Risks are estimated to be lower than previous assessments due to mitigation work completed since 2005, as well as newer methods that take into account historical records and “decreasing landslide impact pressure,” the report notes.

After that, the municipality became more proactive about risk.

“This was a very personal disaster for a lot of people in our community,” said Mayor Mike Little during the June 22 meeting, adding thanks to BGC for helping provide an assessment after the incident.

While risks have been lowered, some property owners should still be on alert.

Engineers note two properties on Rivergrove Place that surpass the district’s risk threshold, having a one in 10,000 annual probability of death due to slope proximity, height and angle as well as a deteriorating retaining wall at an upslope property.

DNV staff have communicated the issues to the owners, the report said, and work is underway to remove the wall and reshape the slope.

BGC also identified a property on Carman Place and two homes on Riverside Drive that are near the risk tolerance threshold.

After the presentation, Little and council members welcomed the recommendations from BGC. Staff said they are working with the communications department on key messaging and ways that they can make technical information digestible for residents including creating modern graphics that can be looked at on smartphones.

“The way people consume information has changed a lot,” Coun. Jordan Back said.

“I appreciate that you’re looking through a modern perspective of how we go about it.”

Coun. Lisa Muri said she is looking forward to seeing more recommendations brought back to council.

“I know this conversation will never be over as we live on a mountain,” she said.

The City of North Vancouver has its first declared challenger for the mayor’s chair in the upcoming municipal election.

Mike McGraw, a retired small business owner and former school district trustee, is seeking to unseat incumbent Mayor Linda Buchanan.

McGraw said he is running because the leadership of the city needs to do a better job of listening and responding to residents’ concerns.

“I think trust has been broken between city hall and residents. I think it’s a real problem… a change is something that is necessary in order to restore that trust,” he said. “There are many people who are frustrated because decisions seem to be made that affect the community and when the community provides feedback, the decisions have effectively already been made.”

McGraw cited the St. Andrews Avenue traffic calming and Eastside Connector bike lanes on Grand Boulevard as key examples.

“In the end, all of the public advocacy

didn’t change the outcome,” he said.

In his announcement, McGraw is promising a full accounting of the city’s exposure to cost overruns at the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant, a rigorous review of discretionary spending at city hall and “balanced approach” to transportation infrastructure that works for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike.

The next council will have to oversee some major projects including implementation of the Lonsdale Great Street and the redevelopment of Capilano Mall.

If those decisions are going to impact mobility, residents have to be listened to, he said.

The city also needs a new advocate to push back against the province’s overreach into municipal jurisdiction and stand up for the city’s interests at the Metro Vancouver board, McGraw said.

“These are all things that mayors and councillors sometimes have an ability to shape or participate in, but I think we really need a stronger voice,” he said.

“We need somebody who has strong leadership who can defend and fight for the city’s ability to properly plan for their

The election is scheduled for Oct. 17.

Legion launches fundraiser to cover $345k building repairs ABBY LUCIANO

A Royal Canadian Legion branch in North Vancouver is facing over $345,000 in building repair costs and is turning to the community for support.

The #118 branch on West 15th Street has received a mandatory $345,594 levy from their strata corporation for essential building envelope and parking slab repairs.

While daily operations are sustainable, Legion president Eva Hinchliffe said they cannot cover the large one-time cost. They have now launched a GoFundMe and other fundraising efforts to help pay off the hefty bill.

“I’m an optimist. I think the community will help us,” Hinchliffe said.

So far, the Legion has raised over $1,500 online and roughly $20,000 from cheques, cash and bank deposits.

“So it’s not just us, it’s the whole strata building,” she said, adding that the Legion has one of

the largest square footages, resulting in the high bill.

The first payment of $175,000 for the levy is looming less than two months away on Sept. 1 and the Legion needs to pay the full

bill by Dec. 1.

If they aren’t able to pay the levy on time, Hinchliffe said they would have to pay interest on bridge financing, putting further financial strain on the organization.

“We’re also reaching out to family, friends, unions and businesses in the area,” Hinchliffe said. “Once we get some exposure and more people aware of the situation, I’m sure the donations will come in.”

For decades, the branch has been a staple in the community.

Every fall, the Legion runs its poppy campaign, which raises money for services to support veterans, cadets and the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation.

Over the last 20 years, Hinchliffe said the Legion has raised nearly $1.6 million.

But the Legion hall itself is a community hub that brings people together for darts, pool and bingo, trivia nights and themed events like St. Patrick’s Day and watch parties during the FIFA World Cup. “It’s important that we keep

this community support going,” Hinchliffe said.

The #118 holds extra sentimental value for Hinchliffe as her grandfather Barry Girling was a member, holding the honorary secretary and officer of the executive roles in the late 1930s.

Last Friday the Royal Canadian Legion celebrated its centennial birthday. Hinchliffe said she hopes to spread the word even further on their fundraising efforts.

“It’s exciting. The Legion has done good things for Canada for 100 years, and we’re just delighted to be able to participate in this celebration,” she said. “We’ve helped the community. Now we need the community’s help.”

Good news for anyone who had a blast at Canada Soccer House in the North Vancouver Shipyards, as similar opportunities for shared excitement might be on the horizon.

The big screen setup on the North Van waterfront was one of the coolest local features of the FIFA World Cup tournament, with football fans from across the Lower Mainland and beyond pouring in to catch the action.

The City of North Vancouver clocked 312,573 visitors over 39 days of tournament action, not too far off the approximately 500,000 who visited the official PNE FIFA Fan Festival in Vancouver.

The rental big screen has been packed

away for now, but the city says because it was so successful for World Cup showings, they are looking at opportunities to bust it back out.

“CNV will explore bringing it back for future major sporting events, subject to available funding and/or sponsorship opportunities,” a city spokesperson said.

Cool. I can’t think of many better places to catch a game with thousands of your closest friends.

Spanish thanks For most neutral observers of the World Cup final, Spain’s extra time victory was one to celebrate in large part because it prevented Argentina from hoisting the trophy again. The 2022 champions seemed

to use up their last bits of goodwill in the final when, following 120 minutes of soccer without a single shot on the Spanish goal, a few Argentinian players physically attacked opposing players as the Spaniards attempted to celebrate their victory. Disgraceful stuff.

For my part, Spain’s convincing win over a previously dominant French team in the semifinal was the performance of the tournament, a win that sent them to the final where they became deserving champions.

The last (and only other) time the tournament was hosted in the United States, the final went to a shootout after a 0-0 draw.

It was quite a relief to see Spain score to avoid that same result this time around. An Argentina shootout win after a performance like that would have been hard to endure.

England’s collapse against Argentina in the semifinal seems all the more tragic for that trophy-starved nation given what happened in the final, but it did give us the ridiculously entertaining third-place game that ended in a 6-4 win for England over France. I had non-soccer-loving friends asking me why all games can’t be high scoring like that. The answer is kind of a bummer – in part, it’s safer to play not to lose rather than play to win – so let’s move on….

RE: West Vancouver Councillor Faces Criticism Over ‘Hordes’ Comment, May 6 nsnews.com story I live near an “Instagrammable” West Vancouver park that has become a destination for families, picnickers, lovebirds and drunks.

As someone who was raised correctly and believes in leaving places better than I find them, I pick up used condoms, beer cans, plastic rose petals, confetti, garbage and, in more recent years, toilet paper in the woods.

I can only surmise that people driving long distances cannot wait to get to the public toilets and resort to squatting near their cars. I see garbage strewn just meters from the garbage cans, and countless recyclables put in the trash cans, right next to the recycling bins.

It does make you lose some faith in your fellow Vancouverites to see this all the time.

When a group of men was smoking on the dry grass, I approached them and, ignoring my own safety, I reminded them that there are signs everywhere that say “no smoking” and they should put them out. The men immediately threw their lit full cigarettes on the ground, and just looked at me. These are the types of people we are dealing with and rangers should be patrolling the more popular parks on weekends (if not daily) in the summer to restore some order, including after dark to ensure no bonfires are being lit during this dangerous fire season.

When Christine Cassidy used the term “hordes,” I don’t think she was far off and I don’t think she should have been publicly shamed for saying it. A horde is “a large, unorganized group,” and it only becomes a derogatory term if we assign a particular culture or ethnicity to it.

I would be curious who identifies with the word and is offended. As a neighbourhood rule follower (call me a “Karen” – I don’t really care at this point), I can confirm, these are indeed, hordes.

Canada raises the bar for soccer

Home game I had the very good fortune to have a seat in the media section for all of the

games in Vancouver, and it’s easily the coolest experience I’ve had in this journalism gig. It was a blast to watch the games and then walk the streets of Vancouver as the city partied like it never has before.

There were, however, two what-ifs during the tournament that demonstrated how much life can change over one kick of a ball. It was a bummer, at least from a party standpoint, that Colombia lost to Switzerland in the final game played at BC Place. That stadium was absolutely packed with Colombia fans ready to explode, and their loss in penalties following a 0-0 tie left the streets full of a lot of sadly quiet fans in yellow. That’s a wicked party we missed out on.

Likewise, Canada came so close to tying Switzerland in the final group game, a result that would have given the Canadians one or two winnable playoff games here in Vancouver. We can only dream about what that scene would have been like.

It’s a massive step up though for Canada.

Less than a decade ago our dreams were simple things like “can we please just qualify for the World Cup?” Now our dreams are much bigger.

I’m not sure I totally agree – forever is a long time – but I love the spicy boldness.

Stephen Eustáquio’s late goal to give Canada a 1-0 win over South Africa in an elimination game will be an “I remember where I was” type moment for many people for years to come. I certainly won’t forget it for a long time. I was at a celebration of life for a well-loved friend. It was held at a Legion with TVs all over the place silently playing the game as the memorial was going on. The winner went in right near the end of the ceremony, just as the musical photo montage for our friend was playing, and for me his memory will forever be entwined with that glorious goal. We were silently screaming as soccer bliss and touching photos played on side-by-side screens. A celebration of life indeed – I’d like to think that our friend was laughing about the timing of it all.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Make the Pea Purée Cook peas in boiling salted water or steam for 2–3 minutes until tender and bright green. Transfer immediately to a blender with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Blend until smooth and keep warm.

2. Prepare the Succotash Cook carrots in boiling salted water for 3–4 minutes until just tender; drain. Heat olive oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add carrots, corn, and black beans, tossing until warmed through. Season with lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

3. Cook the Salmon Pat salmon dry and season with salt and pepper. Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium-high heat. Cook skin-side down (or presentation side if skinless) for 3–4 minutes until crisp and golden. Turn and cook another 2–4 minutes until just cooked through. Top each fillet with 1 teaspoon of herb butter and let it melt.

New Hollyburn program aims to get seniors sharing homes BRENT RICHTER

The Hollyburn Society has launched Hidden Housing Solutions, a new program aiming to pair up seniors who have empty bedrooms with 55-plus roommates in need of rents at below-market rates.

“The program is about giving older adults another choice, helping them to remain in their home and the community that they love, whilst also reducing social isolation and creating affordable housing options,” said Lindsey Shepherd, Hidden Housing Solutions co-ordinator. “I hope that it enables people not to just age in place, but to age well.”

Of the North Shore’s 29,000 single-detached homes, 13,000 are occupied by just one or two people. It means in a region experiencing an acute housing crisis, there are still a lot of empty bedrooms.

Hidden Housing Solutions will work as a facilitator, vetting potential home providers and seekers, understanding their preferences and making introductions to see if they are a good match. The program also provides a legal document for them to sign that offers more flexibility than a lease. Hollyburn then follows up after move-in to ensure things are going smoothly.

“It cuts out a lot of that hard work,” Shepherd said.

Ultimately, it will be up to the home provider and home seeker to agree on a rent but Shephard said they will try to keep monthly rates at no more than a third of someone’s income. There is no cost to be part of the program.

PAUL MCGRATH / NSN The benefits to a senior in urgent need of affordable housing – of which there are many – are obvious, but Shepherd said the program is meant to provide equal advantages to the home provider. The extra revenue can be critical for someone on a fixed income trying to stay in their own home at a time of rapidly rising costs.

Perhaps more important is the companionship and peace of mind knowing someone else is present, Shepherd said.

“It’s peer-to-peer so people can look out for one another rather than look after each other,” she said.

The problem of social isolation and loneliness among seniors gets less attention than the housing crisis but there are signs it is becoming a public health issue of its own, including a growing body of research that shows it is associated with worse health outcomes, said Annwen Loverin, executive director of the Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre.

“We know how damaging social isolation can be. It ranks up there with other damaging health concerns like smoking in terms of its really devastating impact on people’s physical, mental and emotional health,” she

said. “This is an opportunity to have more social connectedness right within your home. It doesn’t depend on your ability to get out.”

Hidden Housing Solutions has a glowing endorsement from Loverin.

“If it has worked in other places with similar conditions, I have a great deal of confidence it will work here,” she said.

Apart from the Golden Girls, unrelated seniors living together isn’t terribly common in Canadian society but Loverin said it could be time for that to change.

“The program itself is designed with such excellent best practices and safeguards that people are really accruing benefits and there are no disadvantages,” she said. “I would really want seniors to think about this and consider it an option for themselves.”

While there are governments and non-profits looking to build more affordable seniors housing, funding is increasingly scarce and it takes years for new homes to come online. With enough homeowners signing up, the Hidden Housing Solutions program could provide an almost instant supply of below-market rentals at no capital cost to governments, Shepherd said.

“It means that they don’t have to build that new housing stock. It is repurposing housing that already exists, which obviously has environmental impact as well as financial,” she said.

The service launched last week at hiddenhousingsolutions.ca.

Shepherd said she is looking forward to recruiting home providers and answering questions from those who might be curious.

From Aug. 7 to 9, teens entering or already in Grade 12 will get a glimpse into the firefighting world at Camp Ignite, a three-day mentorship program across the Lower Mainland that aims to encourage more young women to become firefighters.

Three girls from the North Shore met with the local fire departments at the Maplewood Fire and Rescue Centre July 13 to get a preview of the camp.

“We want them to know that there’s everything available to them,” said Capt.

Carla Penman with District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services. “This gives them a taste of a career that they’d never even thought of.”

These kinds of programs didn’t exist when Penman was a kid. She was the first ever female firefighter on the North Shore.

Almost 16 years ago, she helped launch Camp Ignite with other female firefighters to help women get into the profession or learn what they want to do.

“I was sort of lost about what I wanted to do and it took a professional firefighter to tell me that he thought I should be a firefighter. It had never crossed my mind,” she said. “So we don’t want that to happen to girls these days.”

In Canada, firefighting is still a male-dominated job. Female firefighters make up less

than five per cent in the profession.

At the fire hall Monday, the soon-to-be campers suited up in turnout gear, and tried out the tasks real crews would do when called to a scene, setting up and climbing a ladder, running hoses and crawling down inside a building during a simulated blaze.

“It was fun, just being in the setting and learning about the people who work here,” said Carson Graham Secondary student Aubrey Heppner.

Heppner said she always knew she wanted to be a firefighter. When she saw the opportunity to apply for the camp, it sparked her interest.

“I’ve always wanted to help people,” Heppner said. “I’m really good at working with my hands, and I love being outside. I work out five days a week and play rugby, so I thought this would be a good thing for me to do.”

Holly Scott, also from Carson Graham, and Sophia Kim from West Van’s Rockridge Secondary joined in the all-girl battalion.

With the camps, Penman said she’s seen more women become firefighters, or start other careers in emergency services. “[It’s] just something that had never even crossed their minds before they did this program,” she said. “I’m proud of all the hard work that the professional female firefighters have put into [the program].”

TWN sees early success with shoreline restoration project ABBY LUCIANO

Another shoreline restoration project led by the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) is in the books, and it’s already showing signs of success.

The Nation just wrapped up work on roughly 500 metres of shoreline from the western boundary of their reserve land near Dollarton Highway up to the west bank of George Creek.

The project was planned with nature-based solutions such as sand and gravel beach nourishment, rock walls above the shoreline and salt marsh plantings to help mitigate wave action and protect the shoreline against coastal erosion and flooding.

Project lead Sarah Dal Santo said the hard work is paying off, with seaweed now establishing on rock headlands and otters, heron and deer returning.

“There have been some very exciting early signs of success,” Santo said. “These are early signs that the habitat enhancement and restoration work as part of the project is doing well, and that important existing food sources in Burrard Inlet have been protected.”

Canada geese, however, aren’t so welcomed, Santo said, adding that they had to install brushwood fencing to keep them from eating on the new salt marsh plants.

Last year, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation received over $7.5 million in federal funding to help bring

the project into fruition. The Nation also contributed $2.5 million with support from the province, bringing it to a joint investment of $10.1 million.

The Nation’s climate action and energy management team alongside other departments had been working on the project since 2021, examining the shoreline and consulting with experts including external biologists, civil engineering specialists and climate advocacy organizations on how to help preserve their shores.

For a long time, Tsleil-Waututh Nation members have seen their shoreline actively erode – up to 13 metres of it being lost in some places. Elected councillor Nicholas Kofi has been a witness to it since he was a kid playing along the water’s edge. The future is looking brighter.

“My mom, our uncles and aunties used to go down to the shoreline and have oyster bakes, and it wasn’t always possible because of safety reasons and the erosion and pollution,” he said.

“Hopefully down the line, the next generation can harvest oysters or crabs.”

Restoring what has been lost is something they have long desired, he added.

“As stewards of the land, we’ve always looked for ways to protect our homes, our natural habitat,” he said. “It’s always been on the minds of our community.”

The work also gives the TsleilWaututh community easier access to the shoreline and to bring back traditional practices.

Teaching moments that we can go down there and share as a community and learn more,” Kofi said.

According to a report from the University of Waterloo, shorelines across Canada face a growing risk from climate change, flooding, sea level rise, erosion and development.

Santo said the recent project should address those vulnerabilities. The design has been tested through various mock climate change scenarios and storm events. And it can also be adapted over time as needed to climate change conditions, she said.

Now, the next step is to monitor the shoreline and complete ongoing maintenance when needed. The Tsleil-Waututh Nation is creating a community group to help support that work.

“The waters, the trees, everything is important to us,” Kofi said. “That is our duty to protect our waters as best as we can, and to use the tools of modern times to do so.”

Tsleil-Waututh sue to halt Burrard Inlet dredging project BRENT RICHTER

The səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) is suing to overturn federal approvals allowing the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority to dredge Burrard Inlet.

Last month the port authority announced that a plan to dredge 25,000 cubic metres of material from the Second Narrows to allow oil tankers to move through more fully loaded had cleared its own internal environmental review and been given the OK from Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Currently, Aframax tankers leaving the Westridge Marine Terminal can only fill to 75 to 80 per cent capacity before their draft will become too low for safe navigation through the channel.

Work to remove the material is set to begin in September when the fisheries window opens. But in court documents filed in federal court earlier this month, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation is seeking an injunction to stop that work and have the permits overturned.

“While Tsleil-Waututh understands the proposed dredge is an important step for Canada’s international trade objectives, including increasing the amount of oil moving through the Inlet from Westridge Marine Terminal, the approval process has been rushed and has not addressed any of Tsleil-Waututh Nation’s concerns about marine shipping impacts,” said Chief Justin George in a statement.

In the application for judicial review, the Nation raises numerous issues it tried to have addressed before the permits were issued.

The Second Narrows, or Tsa-ah-nah in the hən̓qə ̓ min̓əm̓ language, is site of significance for the Tsleil-Waututh’s culture, spirituality, history and identity, the applications notes. None of the federal approval processes for the dredging project considered how their rights, culture and way of life, including their sacred connection to the inlet, may be impacted, they argue.

The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion’s approval, which the Tsleil-Waututh were steadfastly opposed to, was predicated on the notion that tankers could only fill to 80 per cent capacity, meaning no regulatory body has ever assessed the risks of the project with them fully loaded.

If the work is completed, Trans Mountain intends to increase its oil output by up to 360,000 barrels of oil per day.

That will mean changes in the timing and frequency of tanker and tugboat crossings through the Second Narrows and casting wakes onto local shorelines, the court

documents state.

The Nation still has unanswered questions about the risks to whales and herring and what impacts the change could mean for kelp and eelgrass beds, which are critical habitats the Tsleil-Waututh have been trying to restore.

The Nation wrote to numerous federal departments highlighting those gaps in the assessments but they never received any response, the application states, and port officials said their assessment was limited to the physical works of the dredging.

“Canada owed Tsleil-Waututh a duty to consult, which it breached,” the court documents state. “Once the [port] confirmed that it would not be addressing the regulatory gap on the basis that it was outside its mandate to do so, Canada was duty-bound by the honour of the Crown to address and close the regulatory gap.”

The Nation will be filing a second court action to overturn the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s approval of the project as well, the documents note.

“Tsleil-Waututh has a sacred stewardship obligation, a responsibility to care for our lands, air and waters. While we attempted to resolve these outstanding issues in good faith, our concerns were ignored, leaving us no choice but to go to court to protect our territory and interests,” George said in his statement. “A well-planned economic initiative needs to include addressing and accommodating impacts to Tsleil-Waututh’s inherent and constitutionally-protected rights. That did not happen here.”

The port has not yet filed a response to court documents and none of the allegations have been heard by a judge.

“The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority respects Tsleil-Waututh Nation’s right to participate in the judicial review process.

We are reviewing the filing and are not in a position to comment further at this time,” a statement from the port read on Thursday, July 9.

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), meanwhile, has released its own statement raising “significant concerns and outstanding questions” about the project.

“Existing tanker and port-related vessel traffic already has major impacts on Burrard Inlet, and cultural impacts on our Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People. Increasing vessel movement will only compound these issues,” said chairperson Sxwíxwtn Wilson Williams. “We welcome the opportunity to discuss our concerns directly with the federal government. In the meantime, we are working internally to determine our next steps.”

Voter turnout for byelections tends to be lower than for general elections, he said.

“The kinds of things that bump turnout up in a byelection are when people are really sick and tired of something to do with the government as a whole, if they’re looking to voice their displeasure with the government’s agenda.

We just don’t have any indication that the Liberals under Carney are at that place yet.”

A byelection must be called within six months of a seat becoming vacant, which happened at the end of June in North Vancouver. But some signs have pointed to a race kicking in sooner than later. Caley, for example, plans to open a campaign office this weekend.

Prest said because Carney’s Liberals are in a comfortable position, the prime minister was free to choose the candidate he wanted.

“This is Mark Carney rewarding an ally and supporter and one of his trusted staffers with a nomination into formal politics in a very winnable riding, likely a safe seat for him,” said Prest.

In an interview, Caley said no other potential Liberal candidate came forward to challenge him in a nomination race, so it made sense to get on with the campaign.

Caley previously worked in constituency offices of Raymond Chan and Ujjal Dosanjh as well as at Vancouver City Hall before turning his attention to national politics.

Caley said if elected he wants to build on Wilkinson’s advocacy “to ensure that B.C. economic opportunity is always at the forefront of the federal agenda.”

As a community with key port industries, national economic goals like doubling non-U.S. exports are intricately linked to the local economy, said Caley. The economic fate of the country is an issue voters remain deeply concerned about when he meets people on the doorstep, he said.

“The main thing that we’ve heard certainly is that they want representation to stand strong in the face of unjust tariffs…. That’s certainly the number one issue that we’ve heard, is to protect our workers and businesses on the North Shore.”

Meanwhile Curran, who has also been door knocking, said he thinks the byelection could be decided by more local concerns than national ones.

“There’s a lot more focus on local versus the national themes,” he said.

Affordability remains a key concern, he said.

“People are now probably into year four or five of dealing with perennial high prices.”

The cost of housing also remains out of reach for many people, he said. Curran said another issue he’s heard about is concern about private property rights in the wake of the Cowichan court decision on aboriginal title.

“I think they’re worried about what kind of effect this is going to have, particularly on the investment climate in this province and commercial activity,” he said.

People are also unhappy about the massive construction cost overruns on the North Shore sewage plant, he said, adding that when federal funding is involved, “it behooves the federal government to ensure that those dollars are properly spent.”

Curran said Caley will have his work cut out for him getting to know North Shore issues.

“I think at the end of the day, it’s important to have lived through a lot of the daily life out here on the North Shore to be able to speak to the concerns and the priorities of our North Shore neighbours.”

In a press statement following the announcement of her candidacy, Luce criticized the federal government for “giving billions in tax breaks and subsidies to the fossil fuel industry” while housing and affordable child care remain out of reach for many.

Wilkinson was a strong environmental advocate, said Luce, but Carney’s government has presided over “pushing through ecological destruction in Burrard Inlet and more

pipelines to be paid for with more billions of public funds.”

Prest said Wilkinson was seen as “a reliable pair of hands for difficult files” during his time in cabinet. Environmental stewardship was a part of that under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, he said, “which does not seem to be as much in evidence for Prime Minister Carney’s version of Liberal governance.”

Generally Canadians still seem to approve of Carney’s handling of global uncertainty under U.S. President Donald Trump. “I think that’s still the focus for many voters – who is best positioned to see Canada through uncertain times.”

But Prest added Carney’s lack of attention to more grassroots politics has the potential to catch up with him.

“There’s only so many times a government can do that and get away with it without starting to sound or look a little tone deaf.”

How building a better mouse trap can help save raptors LAURA MARIE NEUBERT

The questions I am asked most often by readers involve soil, compost, tomatoes and rodents.

Wedged between the forest and the sea, most North Shore gardeners have a passing acquaintance with mice and rats.

My permaculture education has changed the way I see and understand everything, so while my reflexes scream “obliteration,” I have learned to think of mice and rats as part of the food chain – raptor food in particular.

Where we live, we are blessed to see and hear nesting eagle pairs, owls and hawks almost daily, so upsetting their natural balance is unthinkable.

If you have ever stood at the base of a tree where owls live or roost, you may have noticed a pile of owl pellets – tiny fuzzy gizzard-shaped balls of indigestible rodent and bird bones, fur and feathers, that the owls cough up several hours after eating.

If owls and other raptors eat rodents that have been poisoned, they too could die slow and agonizing deaths, or lay unviable eggs. We have seen this in the past, when raptor populations plummeted. New

regulations regarding pest control have lessened the pressure on raptors, but we can still do more to protect them.

Certainly, it takes longer, is more hands-on, and somewhat more gruesome to kill rodents humanely with snap traps, but at least then they can be tossed in the forest with a gloved hand, to decompose or be eaten by their predators.

Some weeks ago during the mini-heatwave, we had some development-based disturbances that sent rats scurrying out of their long-established homes and tunnels into several people’s yards. I watched it happen mid-day, like a scary movie.

That’s nature.

That evening, to my horror, the thirsty and hungry nocturnal creatures bit right through the stems of every one of my beautiful indoor-sown squash plants, and they bit chunks out of all of our peppers.

Rats will do that, I’ve learned, when they are parched and desperate for water. Good to know.

I was able to replace the well-established plants, thanks to Terra Flora in Chilliwack, but was at a loss on how to protect them moving forward. Wire cloche protects plants only to a point in their growth, but it doesn’t control rodent populations.

A friend loaned me a live-trap for small animals, but that only caught and terrified our resident Douglas squirrel. I felt sick about that because she’s so cute and friendly. Understandably, she disappeared for a few days.

Next I tried traditional snap traps baited with peanut butter, set out at night (squirrels are diurnal), next to the squash, covered by cloche pinned to the soil. That somewhat worked as I caught two rodents over three nights. It was a pain though (sometimes literally). I worried about early-morning birds and also, still, the

squirrels. Rising earlier than I already do was onerous, so I was determined to find another way.

The rather expensive ($80) Owltra weather-proof battery-powered rat and mouse zapper that I tried worked very well and beeps when activated, but to populate the garden with multiple was cost-prohibitive.

The DIY solution was to build a better mousetrap that could live outside 24-7 all year and be opened and shut easily as needed to protect the squirrels. Using $13 Canadian-made pine milk crates from Home Depot, and some thin crafting wood from Dollarama, I made several charming little creature buildings in which to hide peanut-butter-baited SafeSnap traps.

Screw-hinged doors semi-covering the handle holes, swing open for rats and mice, and closed for squirrels.

For now at least, my squash and the raptors are safe.

his past year saw significant progress, community investment, and momentum toward our vision of becoming the “Healthiest Small City in the World.” I have often spoken about building a city for people — one that supports health, connection, opportunity, and belonging — which is why we have continued to invest in public places that support people, partnerships that help people remain part of our community, and foster a thriving business community. One of the most transformative milestones is the completion of the new Harry Jerome

Community Recreation Centre and Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre, the most significant capital project in the City’s history. The completion of the Mahon Park Childcare Centre and Fieldhouse and the Innova Childcare Centre added new childcare spaces to support families and strengthen our local economy. In Central Lonsdale, the opening of Topo Park introduced a vibrant new green space and playground where residents and visitors can gather and connect with nature. We also saw the opening of 89 below-market homes, the delivery of an 18-bed Family Respite Centre, and the advancement of the new North Shore Neighbourhood House, which will include 179 homes at 30% below market. Progress continued on the Crosscut Bridge over Highway 1, which will provide a safer crossing and improved connectivity for students, families, and residents on either side of the highway. This year focused

on future planning, with residents and businesses shaping key initiatives like the Lonsdale Great Street Plan. Momentum is growing for the Health Innovation District, bolstered by a Leadership Working Group and Economic Development Strategy adopted in 2024. Inside the North Shore shipyard building Canada’s maritime future

For more than a century, Seaspan has helped shape North Vancouver’s maritime identity. Today, more than 5,000 employees are building Canada’s next generation of naval and Coast Guard Vessels while supporting the local economy and community Seaspan has been an integral part of Canada’s maritime industry for more than 100 years. On the North Shore, that history runs especially deep.

Long before the Shipyards District became a popular waterfront destination, the site was home to North Vancouver’s historic shipyard, where more than 100 Victory Ships were built during World War II. Those vessels transported critical equipment and supplies to Allied forces while helping establish Canada’s modern shipbuilding history.

Today, Seaspan continues that legacy as the largest employer on the North Shore, with more than 5,000 employees across Vancouver Shipyards and Vancouver Drydock. The company supports the local economy and beyond through ship construction, ship repair and marine transportation services while continuing the region’s long-standing connection to Canada’s maritime industry.

At Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards, construction is underway on three vessels being built under the National Shipbuilding Strategy: two Joint Support Ships (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy and a Heavy Polar Icebreaker for the Canadian Coast Guard. The icebreaker is the first of its kind to be built in Canada in over 60 years.

Designed for operations in the High Arctic, the Polar Icebreaker will support Arctic research, search and rescue missions and the resupply of Northern communities while strengthening Canada’s ability to defend its Arctic sovereignty.

Built with its reinforced steel hull, the vessel will be capable of operating year-round in temperatures as low as -50°C while breaking through ice up to 2.5 metres thick. Since construction began, major progress has been made at the North Vancouver shipyard, with steel blocks weighing more than 330

tonnes being assembled.

Nearby, work also continues on the future HMCS Protecteur and the future HMCS Preserver. Once complete, they will become the longest naval vessels ever built in Canada. The Joint Support Ships will carry fuel, food, ammunition and other critical supplies, extending the operational range and endurance of naval task groups, strengthening Canada’s national defence.

Construction milestones continue to bring both ships closer to completion. In June, the future HMCS Protecteur (JSS 1) marked the successful activation of the main diesel generators, an important step toward sea trials later this year. The future HMCS Preserver (JSS 2) also recently reached full structural consolidation, marking another significant milestone ahead of its launch.

Closer to Lonsdale Quay, crews at Vancouver Drydock carry out maintenance and repair work that helps keep a wide range of vessels operating safely and efficiently, including cruise ships, fishing vessels, barges and the SeaBus that connects the North Shore to downtown Vancouver.

Across the West Coast, Seaspan’s distinctive red tugboats also play an essential role, providing more than 2,500 ship assist and escort services each year.

Beyond its marine operations, Seaspan continues to support the North Shore community through local partnerships and events. The company is a major sponsor of Canada Day at The Shipyards, organized by the Rotary Club of Lions Gate, and also supports family programming such as Kids First Saturdays at the Polygon Art Gallery.

hroughout 2025, Council made steady progress on community safety, climate resilience, infrastructure and housing while navigating the challenges of rising costs and changing provincial policies.

One of the year’s most significant achievements was the opening of the new Maplewood Fire and Rescue Centre. This state-of-the-art, energyefficient facility serves as both an operational fire hall and training centre, helping improve emergency

response, strengthen public safety and better support our community.

Preparing for the impacts of climate change and extreme weather remained a key priority. We advanced projects and emergency preparedness efforts designed to improve community resilience, particularly in vulnerable areas. This included strengthening emergency planning, enhancing monitoring capabilities and pre-positioning equipment to improve readiness when severe weather events occur.

Rising costs remained a challenge for residents, including those associated with the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant. Council unanimously supported a call for a public inquiry

to help ensure accountability and advocated for a fairer regional cost-sharing model while working to minimize impacts on residents wherever possible.

Addressing housing needs was also a major focus. Council responded to changes in provincial housing legislation while advocating for growth that is supported by the infrastructure, amenities and services needed to build complete communities.

As I look back on the year, I am grateful for the contributions of our volunteers, the engagement of our residents and the dedication of District Council and staff. Thank you to everyone who helped make 2025 a productive and successful year. ■

It’s saying goodbye to a place that’s been home for decades.

After years in the same home, every room tells a story.

“For many North Shore homeowners, the family home represents decades of memories, milestones and hard work. It’s where children were raised, holidays were celebrated and life happened,” says Vivian Zhang, realtor and educator at Shore New Realty.

It’s that emotional connection that often makes downsizing difficult to even think about. Instead of starting the conversation early, many families put it off, even when they know a move may be in their future.

While there’s no perfect time to downsize, waiting too long to start planning can turn what could have been a thoughtful transition into a stressful one. Here are some of the most common mistakes families make when they delay the conversation.

Waiting until a move becomes necessary Many people assume they’ll know when it’s time to downsize. But in reality, life doesn’t always offer the luxury of planning ahead.

A sudden illness, injury or change in mobility can quickly shift the timeline, leaving families to make important decisions under pressure.

“When families start early, they can explore housing options, declutter gradually and make decisions at their own pace,” Zhang says.

Planning ahead isn’t about rushing into a move. It’s about giving yourself the time and flexibility to make decisions that feel right, rather than reacting to circumstances.

Trying to tackle everything at once

A lifetime of belongings isn’t something most people can sort through in a weekend.

One of the biggest surprises for families is just how long the process takes. From deciding what to keep to donating, selling or passing treasured items on to loved ones, every decision carries emotional weight.

“When a move is planned, families have time to consider their options and make thoughtful decisions. When it happens suddenly, everything becomes more stressful and reactive,” says Zhang.

Rather than waiting until a move is around the corner, setting aside a few hours every month to organize one room or one closet can make the transition feel far more manageable.

Taking over instead of offering support

When parents start thinking about downsizing, adult children often want to help solve the problem as quickly as possible.

But what parents usually need most isn’t someone to make decisions for them.

“The most valuable thing adult children can offer is support, not direction,” Zhang says. “Listen first.

Ask questions. Understand what’s important to your parents before offering solutions.”

est Vancouver has made significant progress in advancing Council’s 2024–2026 Strategic Plan, with major achievements across environmental protection, housing, local economy, mobility, municipal services, and social well-being.

Among the most historic accomplishments was completing the long-standing Ambleside Waterfront Acquisition Plan by securing the final residential waterfront lots on Argyle Avenue, fulfilling a nearly 50-year

community vision. The District also expanded public parkland, dedicated 24 parks, accepted the donation of West Grebe Islet as protected parkland, and delivered new and renewed recreation amenities, including the West Vancouver Place for Sport, Harry Jerome Oval, and a new permanent Youth Hub. Council also advanced major environmental priorities, including dedication of the 1,932-acre Upper Lands Park and transfer of 262 acres of Eagleridge Lands into protected parkland.

Progress on housing included adoption of the Cypress Village Area Development Plan, completion of required provincial housing work, new rental replacement and tenant assistance policies, and 156 affordable housing units completed and occupied at Kiwanis Village West.

We have invested in safer, more connected transportation, including new bike lanes, sidewalks, pedestrian safety upgrades, road reconstruction, and planning for future rapid transit connections.

At the same time, West Vancouver maintained strong financial stewardship, earning continued national recognition for budgeting and financial reporting, while keeping operational tax increases below regional averages.

These achievements reflect the dedication of Council, staff, volunteers, community partners, and residents working together to protect what makes West Vancouver exceptional while preparing for the future.

After a three-year hiatus, pro tennis is returning to West Vancouver’s Hollyburn Country Club this weekend.

In March 1966, North Vancouver spent a week celebrating the opening of the new North Vancouver Recreation Centre and Centennial Theatre. The festivities kicked off with a ball in the curling rink, followed the next day by a cadet parade up Lonsdale culminating in a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Lt.-Gov. George Pearkes.

The ensuing days saw swimming exhibitions, water safety demonstrations, performances of school and amateur plays and a special showcase by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Now, 60 years later, North Vancouver will soon celebrate the opening of a new recreation centre.… What will the festivities bring this time?

The Odlum Brown VanOpen is the largest tournament of its kind in Western Canada, giving players the chance to earn valuable world ranking points ahead of the US Open as well as a portion of the US$430,000 prize pool.

Combining WTA 125 (women’s field) and ATP Challenger Tour (men’s field) events, the tournament has been running since 2002. It was cancelled for two years during COVID, came back briefly in 2022, and was put on pause again between 2023-2025 due to renovations at the country club.

International stars like Andy Murray and Naomi Osaka have played at the tournament earlier in their careers alongside Canadian talents like Bianca Andreescu, Vasek Pospisil and Eugenie Bouchard.

This year the men’s field includes eight players coming off the main draw at Wimbledon. Benjamin Bonzi from France is the top-ranked player at No. 93 in the

world. Other tennis pros include Spain’s Pablo Llamas Ruiz (119), Australia’s Alexei Popyrin (104), Dane Sweeny (127) and Jacob Fearnley (159), and England’s Toby Samuel (123), Jack Pinnington Jones (138) and Harry Wendelken (202).

The women’s draw includes nine players in the top 150, including 21-year-old Lanlana Tararudee from Thailand, ranked at 99. Other high-ranked players include Lin Zhu from China (142), Japan’s Moyuka Uchikima (108) and Himeno Sakatsume (123), and the Australian quartet of Taylah Preston (117), Emerson Jones (135), Maddison Inglis (150) and Priscilla Hon (also 150).

On the Canadian front, 21-year-old Kayla Cross (ranked 197) from London, Ont. and 31-year-old Carol Zhao (216) from Richmond Hill, Ont. will compete on home soil.

The Odlum Brown VanOpen is running July 25 to Aug. 1 at Hollyburn Country Club.

We are deeply saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Nancy Effie Boitson (Glowach) on July 7, 2026.

Nancy was the first child born to Michael and Jessie Glowach on April 29, 1944, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Right from a young age, Nancy developed the values of a deep love for family, a strong work ethic, and kindness, which would guide her throughout her life. She had a welcoming smile and a caring heart.

Though her presence is gone from our lives, the love she shared, the lessons she taught, the bellies she filled and the memories she created will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Nancy's legacy continues to thrive in the hearts that she leaves behind. Devoted husband of 63 years, Archie; son Michael; sisters Mildred (Al), Valarie (Harold), Eleanor (Richard), and Delilah (Kerrin); brother Randy (Penny); as well as extended family members and dear friends, of whom she had many.

Besides her family, one of Nancy's most proudest achievements was her managerial position at Woolco/Walmart, where she worked for 40+ years.

Nancy's passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, but her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched. Her legacy is one of compassion, selflessness, and unconditional love. A legacy that will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, Archie and Mike respectfully request that a memorial donation be made in memory of Nancy Boitson to the BC Cancer Foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Details will be shared with family and friends when arrangements have been made.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Winnifred (Winnie) K. Daye, who passed away peacefully with family by her side. Mom is forever loved by Barb, Marlene (Brian), Sharon, Dave (Norma), six grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Mom was affectionately known as Mom, Babe, Granny, and GG by her family. Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Alfred (Alf), in 1992.

A special heartfelt ”Thank You” to our sister Sharon, who provided full-time dedication, support, comfort, and care to Mom and Dad in their final years.

Our Family would like to extend a sincere “Thank You” to the Vancouver Coastal Home Care Team, Lions Gate Hospital staff, and the wonderful North Shore Hospice Team, who all gave Mom fantastic care and compassion.

REMEMBRANCES OBITUARIES

A great many people are saddened by the unexpected passing of longtime Salt Spring Island resident Bette Calkins (nee Sutherland), who was a dearly loved member of the community. Bette passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on July 11, at the age of 84. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was born on May 17, 1942, in Vancouver. She spent her early formative years in West Vancouver at the edge of the forest on Palmerston Ave, and up Hollyburn Mountain at the cabin their father built with his buddies in the 30s. She and her little sister Diana spent their happiest childhood times playing in the woods there.

Her profound love of nature was evident even then.

She came to Salt Spring in the 70s with her family, first to Maracaibo, where her husband David Calkins was an original investor, then found her heart's home in 1976 at Taurus Farm, where she raised her family. She lived out the rest of her life happily here on the Island, on different properties that she lovingly nurtured.

Whether it was in West Vancouver, here on the island, with her family on Maui every Christmas, or during her many years spent in Todos Santos, she shone her light wherever she was. Her 84 years were truly a life well lived, and she was wellloved through all of it. Including by all her four-legged companions that shared her life over the years- her beloved Sparky, Otis, Lulu, Maxi, and all the others.

Before she became a cherished friend to so many on Salt Spring, she was long term friend of ex-husband David, a loving mother to Gillian (husband Jade), Blair (wife Jan), and Robert, big sister to Diana, and auntie to Erin (Reece, Brinn). In later years, one of her greatest joys was becoming a grandmother to her five grandchildren, Hayden, Braxton, Ruby, Terra, and Dane, all of whom she adored.

Bette was a gem of a gal, salt-of-the-earth she was!. She had a great love and respect for the natural world and, in fact, left a legacy of countless fruit and nut trees on the island; and of course, she grew many gardens. She was also a great cook, although in her own words, a "simple" cook. She could always be counted on to bring something yummy to a potluck, even if she was running late, thus earning the affectionate nickname "Bette Late Than Never," a tribute she wore with grace and good humour.

But she was no pushover, our Bette. A born rebel, you couldn't tell her what to do if she didn't want to do it! She moved to the beat of her own drum and followed her heart wherever it led her, from the wilds of India to the beaches of Baja. And we're so grateful that it led her here, and we got to be part of her life for so many eventful years.

She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, friendship, laughter, and community. She was deeply loved, and her absence will be felt by many.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 28 at Taurus Farm starting at 12:30.

Beverley Graham Barron (née Nelems) passed peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital’s North Shore Hospice on May 14. In March, she was happy to have celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends present.

Born in South Africa to Canadian parents, Harry and Dorothy, Bev grew up alongside her brother Bill in mining towns in South Africa and Zimbabwe, going to school by train to Epworth School in Pietermaritzburg and attending university in Cape Town. In 1956, she moved with family to Canada and completed medical school at the University of Toronto.

Married in 1962 to Bernard, and after a few years in Australia, by the 1970s she was practicing medicine in West Vancouver and the North Shore.

Bev was the ultimate, old-school GP, making house calls, delivering babies in the middle of the night, and doing hospital rounds and surgical assists many mornings. Medicine was her life passion, and, in this period, skiing at Whistler became her recreation passion.

Fond memories of South Africa never left her, and later in life she lived in Cape Town for long periods over many years. She renewed friendships and spent much of her time driving, traveling, and studying photography throughout Southern Africa. At this time, she formed a loving partnership with Jim Welsh, a former classmate from her time at the University of Cape Town.

Travel was an overarching passion. She maintained a lifelong checklist of visiting UN Heritage Sites, which took her all over the world, making many beautiful photo albums along the way.

In later life, she relocated to Victoria to be closer to family, ultimately returning to the North Shore to live at Amica Edgemont Village.

Bev is survived by her children, Paul, John, Graham, and Kyung Sook, and her grandchildren Young Joo, Henry, Julia, Elliott, Audrey, Piper, and Hunter and great-grandson Won Joo. With deep sadness, we announce the sudden passing of David Owen Brabner on July 5, 2026.

David was born on September 23, 1985, to Georgina Brabner and Owen Chester and is survived by his parents, along with his siblings Bree and Levi.

David was an intelligent and unique soul who loved animals, bugs, volcanoes, dinosaurs, fishing, swimming, hockey, and outer space, but unfortunately, involvement with drugs at a young age took David down a different path. Although he had periods of abstinence and recovery over the years, he was not able to permanently abstain from those drugs, which eventually cost him his life.

David is now with his deceased and beloved Grandma, Great Auntie, Grandad, and Great Uncle, but will be forever missed by the rest of his living family.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lila Flores on July 14, 2026.

Lila was a kind, compassionate, and dedicated woman who spent many years serving others through her work with Vancouver Coastal Health and Sunrise Senior Living in North Vancouver.

She was a wonderful person, always offering her help, kindness, and support to those around her. Her dedication, warmth, and caring heart will be remembered by many.

She will be deeply missed by Claudia, Camila, and Felipe, who are her family in Vancouver and shared the last four years of her life with her, as well as by her family in Peru, Jean and Joe Hussey and their family, her friends, colleagues, and all those who knew and loved her. Her beautiful memory will remain forever in our hearts.

Dolores Steele passed away peacefully in North Vancouver on June 26, 2026, at the age of 95, in the same community where she was born. Her passing followed a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in North Vancouver on November 23, 1930, Dolores trained as a nurse at St. Paul's Hospital and became a registered nurse specializing in pediatrics — a vocation that suited her natural warmth and her gift for caring for others. She retired from nursing in 1958 following the birth of her son David, and devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family as a dedicated homemaker.

Over the years, Dolores and her husband Donald made their home in many parts of British Columbia, including Hazelton, Terrace, and Kelowna, before settling on the North Shore. Dolores was an extraordinarily avid gardener. Her garden in West Vancouver was the pride of the neighbourhood, a reflection of her patience, her eye for beauty, and the quiet care she brought to everything she tended.

Above all, Dolores treasured her family. She spent countless happy hours with her grandchildren over the years, and the time she shared with them was among her greatest joys.

Since 2018, Dolores made her home at Amica in Edgemont Village, where she was affectionately known to her nurses and the staff as "Mamma D" — a testament to the warmth and affection she inspired in everyone around her, right to the end.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Donald, who died in 2016 after 63 years of marriage, and by her son David in 2022. She is lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her sister Genevieve, daughter Denise (Michael), son Douglas(Lisa), daughter-in-law Heather, and her six grandchildren: Gillian, Kathleen, Hayley, Dylan, Courtney, and Sabrina.

Her family is grateful for the full life she lived and the love she gave so generously across the decades.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dolores's memory to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

Donald James Reid passed away on Friday, June 26, after a battle with dementia. Don was born in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. At 23, he traveled to California, where he met his wife of almost 65 years.

Don worked for Ford Motor Company for 50+ years as a Service Manager for a number of dealerships, including Ed Chovanes Ford, Hayward Ford, and multiple dealerships for the Falk family. He loved Salmon fishing with friends in British Columbia, cooking & entertaining, and collecting Western & Canadian antiques and memorabilia. Upon his retirement, he became an avid participant with the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and was declared an Honorary Firefighter in 2023.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne, and daughter, Catherine Cale (Bill) of Danville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Helen Reid, sisters Barbara Richardson and Sandra Reid.

Dennis (Denny) Armatage passed away early morning, July 1st, while visiting his daughter Tracey on Savary, one of his favourite places to be. He is survived by his daughters, Marnie and Tracey; sonin-law Harvey; grandchildren Justice, Octavia, Shae, and Paige; brother Bill (Marcelle); sister Lynn (Brett); and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, and granddaughter Amanda.

Dennis lived life on his own terms and was never one to sit still. Whether he was designing homes, out on the boat, skiing, waterskiing, tending to his garden, hiking, kayaking, or dancing, he embraced every opportunity for adventure. He loved bringing people together, sharing stories, and was often found soaking up the last bit of sun, enjoying a good conversation, or planning his next project.

Denny spent his final months doing what he loved most. He proudly cared for his beautiful garden, sharing that he thought it was the best yet, travelled to Kauai with his daughters and dear friend Paula, enjoyed a Father’s Day cruise to Bowen Island, and made several cherished trips to Savary Island surrounded by family and friends. Known for his adventurous spirit, love of dancing, and unforgettable stories, he created countless memories with those lucky enough to share in his life. Though he had many plans still ahead, his heart simply failed too soon. His legacy will live on through the places he loved, the adventures he shared, and the family and friends who will miss him dearly.

James (“Jim, “Jimmy”) Cook passed away July 16, 2026, at the age of 86 after a long battle with dementia, with his wife, Freda, by his side.

Jim was born in Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, Scotland, and trained as a carpenter. In 1964, Jim married Catherine Anne Gray in Golspie, Scotland. In 1966, they immigrated to Canada and settled in North Vancouver. In 1970, they separated and later divorced.

Soon after arriving in Vancouver, Jim discovered his passion for skiing and for Whistler Mountain. While working as a carpenter for Rutland Engineering, he helped build the Medieval Inn in Gastown. The company later worked in Pemberton and then moved on to Adventures West in Alta Lake.

Jim chose to remain in Alta Lake, where he built his own home and partnered with a friend to form his own framing company. Jim married Freda in 1973, and they shared a happy life together for 52 years.

Jim later shifted his focus from framing to foundation work and established Callaghan Concrete Products. In 1980, eager to provide a better service to the then newly incorporated Resort Municipality of Whistler, Jim added concrete pumping to his company. He was a successful businessman until he retired at the age of 75.

Jim loved Whistler, and Whistler loved him back. Known affectionately as “Cookie,” he leaves behind countless friends and cherished memories. His legacy lives on in the stories, laughter, and adventures shared by those who knew him.

Following a stroke in 2017, Jim and Freda left Whistler and moved to West Vancouver. In 2024, as his dementia progressed, Jim became a resident of Berkley Care Centre.

In Canada, Jim was predeceased by his nephew, Marcus Negrin. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Freda (nee Clark), nephew James Clark (Lesley), and great-nephews Alexander and Callum. Sisters-in-law, Juanita Clark and Dawne (Garry) Negrin, and their children, Natasha, Britta, Anna, Joseph, Alexandra, and Sophia.

In Scotland, Jim was predeceased by his parents, James Eccles Cook and Joeanna Bryce Cook (nee Crighton), and sisters Jean Jardine and Elizabeth Macmorland. He is lovingly remembered by his sisters, Rosanna Hunter and Fiona Gilmour, and many nieces and nephews, including Amanda, Tony, Susan, Sharron, Malcolm, Joeanna, William in Holland, and John in Australia.

Freda would like to send a big thank you to the wonderful people at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Centre who provided her with years of dementia support and who were so caring and understanding about Jim’s special needs. Jim loved to visit his friends and the SAC community.

Jim’s family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to the nurses and caregivers at Berkley Care Centre for the exceptional care, kindness, and love they gave to Jim.A special thank you to his private caregivers, especially Caroline, Sharon, and Yiota, for their devotion, along with the caregivers at the Comfort Keepers Care Agency.

Jan Macleod passed away peacefully at home in Oliver, BC, on July 11th, 2026. Over the years, Jan also lived and thrived in Dawson Creek, East Van, the Sunshine Coast, Grand Forks, and North Vancouver. Wherever she landed, Jan brought the room to life and made deep and lasting friends. She reached out to every person she met and was simply, wonderfully herself.

At an early age, she took up Scottish dancing, learning the steps with the same energy and flair that would define the rest of her journey. Light on her feet and full of spirit, she was never one to sit out a good time. That liveliness was a constant and found many expressions as her hands were never idle. She created beautiful meals, gardens, arranged flowers, stained glass windows, hand-made clothes, and heirloom Christmas stockings and ornaments — all crafted with flair and given away as freely as her friendship.

Sharp and well-read, she loved a good conversation and maybe even more, good competition in the many games she enjoyed. She was organized down to her meticulous travel binders, happily running her own cruise excursions rather than joining someone else's tour — as in life, she was her own guide.

Yet Jan's fierce independence found a perfect match in her husband, Dave. It was a true yin and yang connection — her spontaneity meeting his patience, her flair balancing his calm. Together they built a partnership that seemed to fit exactly as it should, whether racing down the highway on the back of Dave’s Harley or walking side by side in the backstreets of Kyoto. Thirty-three years in, theirs was still a love that made sense of itself.

Jan was the cherished wife and life partner of Dave (Kitching) and aunt, sister, and friend to Heather, Milt, Sophie, Sam, Scott, Cyndia, Lachlan, Wilson, Alec, Kim, Todd, Colleen, Tobi, Jason, Taylor, Tyler, Madison, Caleb, Abbey, Gabe, Michelle, Shelley, John, Andrea, Calvin, Rebecca, Basil, Michael, and Ryan. She will be deeply, dearly missed.

Kathryn Anne Sear (Carabine) was simply the best. The best mom. Our best friend. The best pun maker. She was a true miracle that defied all odds time and time again to be able to complete her most important life mission – to have, raise and watch her three daughters grow up.

Kathryn was born on February 13, 1960, in Lachine, Quebec, to Irene and Ron Carabine. She lived there with her two older brothers, David and Bruce, until moving to Vancouver. Sadly, Irene passed away from breast cancer soon after the move, when Kathryn was only 9 years old. Despite gaining a wonderful stepmom (Marian), not knowing or having many conscious memories of her mom left a huge void in Kathryn’s life. She grew up dreaming of being a mother herself who would always be there for her kids.

After graduating from Carson Graham High School, Kathryn got a job at Pacific Press, where she would later meet her husband, Allan Sear. The two would travel before settling in Lynn Valley. In 1989, Kathryn would finally fulfill her dream of becoming a mother when her daughter Irina was born. When Irina was only 16 months old, Kathryn’s worst nightmare appeared to be coming true when she was diagnosed with cancer and told she had only weeks to live. She decided she was not going to accept the prognosis.

With the help of her doctors, Susan O’Reilly and Karen Gelmon, Kathryn defied medical odds and beat her cancer. A miracle. While recovering from the brutal side effects of all the treatments she received, she dreamt of having more kids.

Being told she might not be able to, Kathryn again did not accept this and became pregnant with her second daughter, Rylee, who was born in 1993. Another miracle. Two years later, her third daughter, Miranda, was born. In 2002, Kathryn took on yet another battle after being diagnosed with breast cancer at 42 – the same age that her mom was when she died. With her kids still being young, Kathryn underwent surgery and treatment and beat her cancer.Another miracle.

On April 13, 2024, Kathryn was diagnosed with Stage 4 triple-negative breast cancer. The last two years of Kathryn being sick were tough. She endured multiple different chemo drugs, two rounds of radiation, suffered from heart failure, recurring infections, needed hip surgery, and suffered from lots of negative side effects. She did it all so that she could spend the most time possible with the people she loved. No material items or experiences mattered to Kathryn in the end – it was simply being with her family and closest friends.

Kathryn passed away peacefully at home, with her three daughters holding her hand. She died with immense gratitude. She did not feel ripped off for time, but rather that she was given the gift of 35 additional years since her first diagnosis to fulfil her lifelong dream. Despite the odds, she got to watch her three daughters grow up and even got to meet her two granddaughters, Leola and Nora.

She will be remembered for her quick wit, humor, strength, and for being the best mom to not only her own kids, but to many of their friends. Kathryn is survived by her daughters, stepdaughter (Jackie), brothers, stepmother, and grandkids.

With sadness, we announce the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Henry Wells on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Hollyburn House. He was 101 years old.

Survived by his loving wife Bette of 40 years and his loving children from his first marriage: Beverley (Robert), Barbara (Fritz), Johnny (Cindy), William (Jenifer), and Carol (Ken), 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-greatgrandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two wives, Dorothy and Gillian, his mother Dorothy, father Harry, and brother Robert (Olivia).

Dad was born in Vancouver on June 19, 1925, and spent his early years in the city until the family moved to West Vancouver, where he attended school. At the age of 17 ½, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, as he wanted to ‘help defend his country during the war’. He was posted to Prince Rupert, B.C., his ship patrolled the western coastal waters and inlets of B.C. It was there that he met and married Dorothy Beerling, and after the war, they moved to West Vancouver, where they raised five children.

He was very active in the West Vancouver Boy Scouts as a leader and organized their Jamborees.

A lifelong active member of the West Vancouver Legion Branch 60, he became President 1958-1960.

He never missed a Remembrance Day Service, even visiting the Cenotaph during COVID. Throughout his life, Dad had a passion for boating, camping, fishing, hunting with his two sons, skiing, golfing, reading, and he also enjoyed dressing up in costumes on certain occasions. Also making many improvements on recreational properties on Bowen Island and on the Sunshine Coast. He was a man of great character, personality, knowledge, and yes, stubbornness. He was also a remarkable storyteller, and his wisdom will live on through the family for generations to come. He and Bette loved RVing, and they travelled across Canada, parts of the United States, and north to Alaska while in their 80s.

A special thank you to Venvi Hollyburn House Staff for their compassion and great attention to Dad’s care. Also, a shoutout to Dr. Jonathan Hislop, who was so good at listening to dad and giving him such great medical care.

A small celebration of life will be held later. Family and friends will be notified as to when and where.

George Pappas, beloved Husband, Father, Papou, brother, and Friend. Born George Papakonstantinou in the small village of Kaparelli, Thebes, Greece, to Spiro and Georgia Papakonstantinou.

George's adventure to Canada began at age 7. His journey was one marked by strength and curiosity.

Leaving his village by donkey to the Port in Athens, he said goodbye to his beloved mother (his father passed away when he was 6), who knew his life would be improved by being adopted by his Uncle in Vancouver, B.C. He boarded a boat alone (Just the clothing on his back, no money and no grasp of the English Language), which travelled to many ports in Europe with its final destination in Montreal. From there, a train then brought him across Canada, where his adoptive parents, Harry (Aristides) and Anna Pappas, were waiting for him.

George did his schooling in Vancouver, graduating from Magee Secondary School, and then attended the University of British Columbia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He started his working career in the Insurance Business and moved on to being a highly respected Investment Advisor, where he worked until his retirement in 1997.

George had a strong passion for Golf. He began his golf journey as a Caddy at Marine Drive Golf Club at age 13 (1943), he then joined as a Junior member for $1.00/month. Finally, in 1967, he became a fulltime member and later earned a lifetime membership. A passionate golfer, he continued playing the game he loved until the age of 91, when he played his final round.

He also found great joy in woodworking, crafting beautiful pieces that will be treasured for years to come. Fishing was another lifelong passion, and his annual fishing trips were a beloved tradition.

George was predeceased by the love of his life, Maria, in April 1997. Together, they shared 37 years of wonderful marriage. He was also predeceased by both sets of his parents, Spiro and Georgia Papakonstantinou (Greece), Harry (Aristides) and Anna Pappas (Vancouver), along with brother Basili (Sofoula), Katherine (John), Kosta (Katina), and John (Katina).

From the age of 7 until his passing at 96 in Canada, George lived an extraordinary life filled with adventure, love, and purpose, with his greatest joy being his family. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Paul and Danae (Greg), as well as his cherished grandchildren Celeste and Bo. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
