Hewaspronounceddeadatthe scene,but notbefore a valianteffort bybothvolunteer and professionalfirst responders.
“Itwas suchaprofoundlytragiceventthatthis youngman’slifewascutso shortatanearlyage. We’re reallyfeelingfor[hisfamily],” said Suzanne Birch, West VancouverPoliceDepartment spokesperson.
Mark Kascha,a firstaidinstructorofmorethan25 years and oneofthefirstbystanders tostep infollowing the teen’sfall,saidhewasstruckbythe compassionand teamworkdemonstratedbytotalstrangers.

TheBig&Litdesigncompetition is offeringprizesto amateurarchitectsunder theage of 25whocanproduceinspiring conceptsforanewpedestrianandcycling bridge–furnishedwithlandscaping,children’splayareasandmaybeaplaceto grab a coffee–thatwouldcrossHighway1near Lonsdale.
“Participantsareencouragedtoexplore howarchitecture,urbandesign,landscape, andlightingcanworktogethertocreate a safe,engaging,andvibrantdestination that becomesasymbolofunityforthecity.The bridgeshouldservenotonlyasacrossing butasaplacewherepeoplemeet,interact, andexperiencethecityin new ways,”the Big&Litwebsitestates.
Whenthe Trans-CanadaHighwaywas pavedthroughthecityinthe1960s, it helpedconnectthecountry buttotally dividedwhat wasonceacontiguous neighbourhood.Atahighlevel, organizer NastaranBeigisaidthecompetition should inspire entrantstothinkabout reconnecting whathasbeentornapart,leaving residents withinadequateinfrastructure.
“Thatbridgeisjustforcars,”she said. “It’snot reallypleasantasapedestrian to walk on thebridge.I reallydidn’tfeelsafe.”
TheHighLineinManhattan– a

two-kilometre elevatedwalkway builton a decommissionedNew YorkCityrail spur –isakeyexampleofwhatcouldbeaccomplished,Beigisaid.
“Whenyouwalkonthatbridge, you’re notfeelingthatyou’reona bridge. Youfeel like you areina park,”shesaid.
Thecompetition,whichis being done inpartnershipwiththeCityofNorth VancouverandUBC’sSchoolofArchitecture andLandscapeArchitecture,isbroken
upintothree agecategoriesforentrants: universitystudentsuptotheageof25,high schoolstudentsaged13to18,andkids agedeightto12.
Beigisaidthecontestisagoodopportunityforuniversitystudentsstudying architecture,designorurbanplanning to distinguishthemselvesearlyintheir careers.Highschoolstudentsseekingto enterthose fieldswillhaveachanceto buildtheir post-secondaryapplication
portfolios.Andfortheyoungestkids,itis anopportunitytobecomeengagedcitizens andshareperspectivesthataren’tusually consideredinurbanplanning.Thecompetitionisopentoyoungpeopleacrossthe country, andnopriorexperienceindesign is required.
“It’sverygoodforthatgroupagetothink abouttheircitythattheylivein.Thisbrings thatsenseofbelongingandconnection,” shesaid.“Ithinkit’sgood…justbringing thisvibeofdesignthinkingbetweenyouth andstudentsinCanada.”
Thedesireto reconnectthecommunitiesoneithersideofthehighwayisone BeigishareswithMayorLindaBuchanan, whocurrentlyhasthecityinvestigatingpossibilitiesof“capping”Highway1atLonsdale andbuildinganewurbanparkontop. Thatiscurrentlygoingthroughahigh-level feasibilitystudy.
Beigisaidthatplanismuchmore ambitiousandthereforecostly,whereas a pedestrianandcyclingbridgecouldachieve manyofthesamegoalsinamuchshorter timeframe.
Thesubmitteddesignswillbekeptconfidentialuntilthey’resharedwithapanel ofexpertjudges.Finalistswillbeinvitedto makeapresentationtothejury, whichwill thenselectwinners.

Adozenpeoplewere displacedafter aNorth Vancouverhomewentupin flamesSundayafternoon.
Around3:15p.m.,North VancouverCity FireDepartmentcrewswere alertedtoan activefireinasingle-family homeonthe 2600blockof Western Avenue.Districtof North VancouverFireandRescueServices
werealsocalledtothescene.
Whencrewsarrived,noone was in the buildingandtheywereabletoknockdown thefire prettyquickly, saidChiefGreg Schalkofthecitydepartment.
“Itwasdefinitelyanactive fire.There washeavysmokeand fire whencrews arrived,comingfrom, I think,thebasement,”hesaid,adding30 firepersonnel wereatthescene.

largeamountsofsmokecomingfrom thehouse,as wellasdamage insidethe structure.Afterthe fire wasputout, crewscalledNorthShoreEmergency Management(NSEM)tohelp thedisplaced residents.Inanemail, NSEMsaid 12 residentshavebeendisplaced, with 10individualsandonefamily stayingin a localhotel while also receivingemergency socialservicesandsupport.

Avenuewasbeing rentedout. Two residentswenttoLionsGate Hospitalforsmokeinhalation and were releasedlaterthatday, Schalk said.
Aninvestigationofthe fire isunderway, andit’snotdeemed as suspicious at this time,hesaid.

Thepublicwillsoonhavetheirsay beforeDistrictofNorth Vancouver councildecideswhetherto allow permanentproduction ofliquidchlorineatamajorwaterfrontindustrial plant.
Chemtradeandits predecessors havebeenproducingthechemicalat theAmherst Avenuechlor-alkaliplant in Maplewoodsince1957.
Inthe1980s,thedistrictprohibitedthe manufactureofhazardoussubstances, buttheplantwasallowedtocontinueasa “non-conforminguse”underthelaw.
Nowthecompanyislooking to modernizethefacility, requiringittogetanew approvalforchlorine production.
Chlorinecanbehighlyhazardousif spilled,andfatalinhighenoughconcentrations.Whenthematterhasbeen discussedatdistrictcouncilin thepast, it has been controversial.
Thecompany, however, saysthe rezoningwillallowittogoaheadwithsite improvementsthatwillmakethefacility safer.Thoseincludedemolitionofunused buildings, removalof 60-tonneliquid chlorinestoragetanksand transitioning

toa“produce-and-ship” model thatsignificantly reducestheamount of chlorine onsite.Plansalsoincludeconstruction of anewenclosedrailcarloading building designedtocontain chlorineintheevent of aspill,a newgravityfedsystemfor movingchlorinefrom condensers,aswell asseismicupgrades.
Chemtradesubmittedaquantitative riskassessment,whichwasindependently peer-reviewedbyaconsultanthiredby thedistrict.
“The[assessment]indicatesthatthe proposedsafetyupgrades reduceboth thelikelihoodandpotential consequences of crediblechlorine releasescenarios comparedtoexistingconditions,”adistrictstaff report stated.
Councilvoted unanimously on Jan. 12toadvancethe rezoning proposaltoa publichearing.
Whenthematterwasupfordebate, severalcouncil members specifiedthey werekeepingan open mind pendingthe publichearing,but they also stressed Chemtrade’simportancetoboththelocal andprovincialeconomy.
Theplantemploys more than180peopleandsupplies about70 percentofthe chlorineusedfordrinkingwaterpurification inB.C.andAlberta.Italso shipsthe chemicaltotheUnitedStates.
“Iwouldbevery concernedabout the lossofthistypeofmaterialfrom being producedin WesternCanada.Therearen’t alot ofopportunitiestoproducethiskind ofmaterial,”said Mayor Mike Little.“If youwerestartingoutfrom Day1and you didn’thavethefacilityhere,thenmaybe you probablywouldn’tbeputtingitin suchan urbanized area. Butit’sbeenrun sowell overtheyears.… We wanttosee
investmentinittobeabletokeepthe safetyuponthe site andactuallyeven makethesiteevenmore safethanithas been.”
Coun.JimHansontoo signalledhis support.
“Iftheplantcannotbeoperated safely, thennoeconomicargumentcanjustify itscontinuedoperation.Personally,Iam satisfiedbasedonwhatIknowthatwith thesafetyupgradesproposed,andgiven thisplant’slonghistory of safeoperation, thechlorineplantatthislocationcanbe operatedsafely.”
Coun.LisaMurialsoacknowledged Chemtrade’sclean record,but she said peopleinthearea,which shealsolives in,needtocomeawayfromthepublic hearingwithadeeperunderstandingof whattherisksare.
“Ithinkthecommunityneedsto understandwhatthehorribleworst-case scenarioisandhowyou’regoingtodeal withthat.Whathappenswhenthere’s an earthquake?Whathappenswhenthere’s anaccidentalfailure?” she said.“Wehave alotofgoings-onintheinlet.Andhuman errorhappensandwe’ve seenit.”

Kaschalaterlearnedthe teen had lost consciousnessrightbefore thefall,which policeconfirmedwasconsistentwith witness statements.Theincidentmighthave been relatedtoacrashontheskihillhe’d hadearlierintheday.
“It’sacombinationoftragediesthat happened,”Kaschasaid. “There’s nothing thatcouldhavebeendonedifferently.”
Kaschasaidheisnowhopingto make somethinggoodcomefrom thetragedy. To thatend,hisbusinessis offeringfree CPR training classesin Vancouver,Coquitlam, Richmond,Surrey,North Vancouver, Kelowna,Calgary,Lethbridge,Edmonton,
Regina,and Winnipeg, startingonJan. 23 andrunninguntiltheendofFebruary.
“Tohonourthatvolunteerspiritandto encourageand help peopletogainmore skills…toempower people, to givethem theconfidence,” hesaid.“Thebiggest thingisnottobescaredof helpingand contacting911whenit’sneeded.… When CPRisneeded, don’t bescared Start itas soonaspossible.”

Kaschasaid hewasalsostruck by theprofessionalismand levelorurgency shownbytheCypressMountainskipatrol.
“Unbelievableeffortfromthem,”he said.“Peopleshouldfeelcomfortableon thatmountainknowingthatthey have a skipatrollikethoseguys.”
Cypressstaff released a statement followingtheincident.
“Cypress Mountainextends our heartfeltcondolencesandsupport to theguest’sfamilyandfriends duringthis incrediblydifficulttime,”it read.

TheCityofNorth Vancouver meanwhile isinvestigatingaproposalto“cap”Highway 1 atLonsdaleandbuildanewurbanpark on top.Ifitistechnicallyfeasibleandifwe couldfindawaytopaythebig-ticketcost, itwouldbeatransformationalproject for North Vancouver.Butifit’snotdoable, Big&Litmightprovideusthenextbest thing.
Justtwokilometreseastof Lonsdale,the cityiswellontheirwaywithanewpedestrianandcycling connection overHighway 1 linkingtheKirkstoneandLoutetareas. It goes toshowtherearemanyways to bringustogetheragainthatdon’t require a car. We justhavetohavealittlecreativity andthewilltomakeithappen.

Aquickmapsearchtells me thereare14vapeshopsonthe NorthShore,allwithineasy reach of ourschools.Idon’tneedto namethem,becausetheyall soundthesame,lookthe same, andarefilledwiththe same unscrupulouspeople. We know whotheyare,andtheyaretargetingouryouth.

ThemovefollowsaJan. 12 voteon a motionbroughtforwardbyCouns.Sharon ThompsonandPeterLamburtohave councilgiveallplansfornew housingthe once-overbeforefinalapprovalsaregiven.



Permitsarealready requiredfornew buildsinthehistoricneighbourhoodwhich sitsonapeninsulabetweenPilotBayand CaulfeildCove,designatedastheLower CaulfeildHeritageConservationArea.
Inthe past,aneighbourhoodadvisory committeeprovidedcommentsonapplications.Butthatgroupwasdisbandedin December2023.
Themovetogivecouncilfinalsayon whatkindofhousescanbe builtinLower Caulfeildisneededtoensureneighbourhoodcharacteris retained,saidseveral councillorswhospokeinfavourofthe change.
“It’sjustimperativethatwehangonto ourcultureandourheritage,”saidCoun. Linda Watt.
Coun.ChristineCassidyagreed.“When I ranforelectionon bothoccasions,Iran onneighbourhoodcharacter,” shesaid. Cassidysaid anyonewhowantstobuildin LowerCaulfeildshouldbeawarethatitis a specialareaand plans must be inkeeping withtheexistingneighbourhood.
MayorMarkSagersaidguidelines were originally put in place becauseof concernsabouta“proliferation”of“very conventionalstucco homes”ruiningthe neighbourhoodcharacter.
LowerCaulfeildwasoriginallyconceived by “gentlemanadventurer”Francis Caulfeild whobought thelargeparceloflandin1899 andenvisionedtheareaasavillageinstep withitsnaturalenvironment,alongnarrow windinglanes.
Currentguidelines,adopted three decadesago,callfornewhomestobebuilt onthesamesitesaspreviousones, retentionofnaturalfeatures,andcarefulsitingof buildingstoensureprivacy.
Theproblemwiththoseguidelinesis theyareextremelyvague,saidJimBailey, directorof planning, and tendto referto streetscapesandlandscapingratherthan concrete designfeatures.

Sensitivitiesofsomearea residentswere recentlyrattledbyanapplicationtobuild a newcontemporary-style2,800-square-foot homeononeoftheprominentproperties inthearea,4798TheHighway.Accordingto theplanningstaff report,theplanfeatured largeglasswindowsanda flat rooftypicalof modernistdesign.
Butmanyneighboursopposedthe building,writingletterstocouncil,citing privacyconcernsandworriesabouthow theproposedbuildingwastoocloseto adjacenthomes.
Theapplicationwaswithdrawn beforecouncilwasslatedtodiscussitin December.
Previously,councilvotedtodirectstaff to revisethedesignguidelinesforthe Lower Caulfeildareatobringthemuptodate.
ButBaileysaidMondaythatisabig taskthatwillinvolvesignificant community consultationand reconcilingmanydiffering opinions.

Jonathan Wengcreatedthe“solarpower telemedicinedevice,”amedicalkitwith a digitalstethoscope,pulse oximeterand bloodpressuremonitor.Anultrasound machineor microscopecanalso be attachedtothekit,allowingthosedevices to functionin areaswithout reliable electricity.
Wengspentthelast18 monthsdesigningthedevice in hisNorth Vanhome,all outsideofschool hours.Afterdetailed planning, Wengwilldeploy thedevicein apilotprojectinKibera, KenyainMarch withtheUnitedCulturalEmpowerment and SocialCommunityOrganization (UCESCO) Africa.
“Iwanted to help findasolution,” Weng said aboutwhatmotivated him to workon thisproject.“Wewant thisto be a device thatanyonecanuse regardlessofany socioeconomicchallengesorevenknowledgebarriers.”
Wengsaidtheaim of the pilotisto helpidentifyareasthatneed refinement andpreparethedevicefor broader implementation.
Themedicaldeviceideawasinspired by Weng’sfirsttriptoKiberatwoyearsago withUCESCO-Africa,whereheshadowed doctorsanddentistswhilealsoteachingat an elementaryschool.Whilevolunteering,

“I wentbacktoNorth Vananddecided Iwouldn’tletthathappenagain.This isn’t aboutcharity, it’s aboutbuildingsystems thatworkwhen everythingelsefails,”he said.
Sincethen, Wenghas travelledto Kiberaannuallytohelppeoplegetmedical care.
“Iwitnessedsomanyhealth-careinequitiesthatpeoplefaceonadailybasis,” he said, referencinglackofdeveloped


infrastructuresupportingelectricaltechnology,whereclinicsandneighbourhoods canfaceblackoutswhenitrains.
Wengsaidthathismedicaldevice differsfromdonationssuppliedbyclinics andlaboratoriesacrossNorthAmerica andEuropebecauseitwouldstillwork duringablackoutasitdoesn’t require electricitytofunction.Thedevicecanrun onsolarpowerandalsohasahand-crank generatortosustainoperations.
“It’sprettyaccessiblefor almost anyone to use.Itallowsalocalworker torun diagnostic tests, getAIanalysis or sendthedatatothespecialistsinthe
city,” Wengsaid,whichwouldbeKenya’s capitalNairobi.
Sincethetrip, Wenghasbecome anadvocateforglobalhealth,earning credentialsasa registeredemergency medical responderinB.C.andanemergencymedicaltechnicianintheU.S.Heis alsotheauthoroffour publishedbooks andfounder of YouthAdvocatesforGlobal HealthAssociation,whichaimstoaddress globalhealthdisparities and empower underservedcommunities,according to its website.
ThefirsttriptoKiberawasaturning pointfor Weng.
“Iusedtotakeeverythingforgranted,” Weng said.“Iwasn’taveryconsiderate personbackthen, whichisprobably one ofthe reasonswhy my parents wanted me togo outthereand seewhatit’slike.”
Weng addedthathisfirstthree-week trip“reallychangedhowIviewedthe worldingeneral.”
Weng saidthatthedevicehas recently gained recognition on aglobalscale.His project hasadvancedtotheevaluation stageofthe2026 MedTechAccelerator Program,aglobalcompetition thathelps support medicaltechnologystartups. Participatingintheprogramwill offer exposure toinvestors,mentorshipand guidancetofurtherdevelopthedevice.
“Iwanttokeepimproving thisproduct, trytogetittothehighestlevelit can beso thatpeoplewhobenefit from thisproduct getthebestpossiblecare,”hesaid.

Now,hisbusinesshasgrownfrom a soloworkerto54employees,expanding fromjustacleaningcompanyto offer other servicessuchasjunkandsnow removal, landscapingandIndigenoushomecare.
Theyearsofhustlearepayingofffor the West Vancouver resident,as Janvier andhisbusinessarebeinghighlightedin thepopularCanadianseries Dragons’Den laterthismonth.
“I’m happyandproudthatthere’s an IndigenousbusinesstosupportIndigenous clients,”hesaid. “It really breaksdown thatbarrierandmakesourclientsfeel a lot morecomfortabledealing with us.”
Currently,CedarBrushSite Services & Janitorial servesclients basedmostlyin Metro Vancouver,withsomeinSquamish andWhistler.Janvier’scompany also employsmembersofmanyIndigenous communitiesinMetro Vancouver,includingtheSḵwxwú7mesh(Squamish) and
Janvierhopestoexpandhis company across WesternCanada,withhelpfromthe Dragons.
“IfIcoulddothathere justwith myself, withextrahorsepower,propertrainingin thatfranchisemodel,proper equipment, propermodelsofoperating.…Ithinkwith someextra capitalinplace,the growth modelisdefinitelythere,”hesaid.

“Youdon’twanttobenervous,but for metryingtoputtogetherthepitchthat Iputinfrontofme,it’s an unnaturalway ofmedoingbusiness,tryingtobelike a scriptedpitch,”Janviersaidlookingback onthemoment.“Ifeltuncomfortable,but assoon as westarted talkingafter my initialpitch,itwaslikethe flipswitchedand itwasgotime…itwasdefinitelyagreat experience.”

Hisfirstbusinesswascollecting rocks fromaneighbour’sgraveldriveway,cleaningandpolishingthem and sellingthem for25centsa piece,accordingtoForward Summit’swebsite.Asateen,Janvierhad sidehustlesshovellingsnowandmowing lawnsforneighboursastheyspentlong hoursinshiftwork at oilsites.
ReflectingbackonhisbusinessventuresandCedarBrush, Janviersaidhe’s continuingtogrowhisservicescompany.

Raumaisexpectedtobuild uptotwovesselsinFinland,with deliveryslatedfor2028,while Bollingerwillconstructup to four

ThefirstoftwomassiveNavy jointsupport ships,theHMCS Protecteur, wasalsoofficially launchedayearago,inDecember 2024.
Atmorethan173metres,the jointsupport shipisthelongest navalshipeverbuilt in Canada, and willbetaskedwith resupplyingCanadianandallied warships
atseawithfuel,food,spareparts, andammunition.
Theofficiallaunchofthe hulldidn’tmarktheendofthe constructionprocess.Afterthe shipwasinthewater,workhas continuedonthe installationof hundredsofkilometresofcabling, piping,andelectronicsystems thatgoinsidetheship.Thatwork hasbeentakingplacealongside Seaspan’smassivenew272-metre outfittingpier.

West Vancouver MayorMark Sager announcedduringtheJan. 12 councilmeetingthat councilunanimously approvedthedevelopmentof a permanentyouthhubin Ambleside ParkonPoundRoad,located at the siteoftheformerAmbleside Youth Centre.
There aren’t many details about the projectyet,butthedistrictisputtingout requestsforproposals.
Accordingtodistrictdocuments availableonBCBid,theproposed buildingwillbe approximately3,500 square feet,with9,500square feet of outdoorspace.
EarlydesignsbyCornerstone PlanningGroupshowtwo rooms (onefor gamesandsocializingand
anotherfor multipurpose),office space,workstationsanda kitchen andconcessionstand.Outdoor space includes a halfbasketball court, a bike tune-upstation,abarbecueand outdoorstorage,a“grassy” area, a garden andparkingstalls.
Thesuccessfuldeveloper willbe responsiblefor all designaspects outlinedinthedocument,as wellas development andbuildingpermits and construction,thedocument states.Thedistricthopestohave adeveloperinplacebyMarch. The project’s estimated costhasnotyet been determined.

Thebuildingthen wentup inflamesonMarch30,2019in a suspectedarson,accordingto investigators.Roughlysixmonths later,councilvotedtolookfor a temporarylocationandpermanent hometocontinueofferingyouth programs.InDecember,2019,council putup$250,000topayforatemporaryyouthhubinParkRoyalSouth, where itstilloperatestoday. A45-year-old Vancouvermanhasbeen handed a two-yearconditionalsentence,including house arrest,afterheusedthreatsof violenceover fictionaldebtstotake$250,000fromaNorth Vancouverfamily.
Paul WilliamBarryEdwards,45,washanded the sentenceJan.6inNorth Vancouverprovincialcourtafter pleadingguiltytodefrauding thefamilyoutof aquarter milliondollarsoverathree-yearperiodbetween2017 and2020.
Inhandingdownhissentence,provincialcourt Judge JosephGalatialso ordered Edwardstopaybackthefamily$188,000still owing.

Ashis“debt”toEdwardsgrew,the victimbegan committingpropertycrimestogetmoney.Edwards thendirectedtheyoungmantotellhis parentsheowed moneytoorganizedcrimeandthatifdidn’tpay,hislife wasindanger.
Atanearlierpreliminaryhearing,the youngman’s fathertestifiedthattheir sonwouldcallthemaskingfor “outrageousamountsofmoney,”upto$50,000atatime. Hisfathersaidhewastoldhis son hadgotinvolvedin organizedcrimeandthat“ourliveswereindangerunless wepaidthemoney.”
Theparentstestifiedtheyborrowedmoneyfromfamilyandfriendsandmaxedoutalineofcredittopaythe debt.Eventuallythefinancial stress meant theyhadto selltheirhomeinBurnabyandmovetoNorth Vancouver, wherethethreatscontinued,thefathertoldthejudge.



Atthetime,theparentsbelievedEdwardswasamiddle manbetweentheir sonandtheorganizedcrimegang. Whenthefamilywasunabletocomeupwithany more money,Edwardsarrangedforthreateningphone callstobemadetothefamily, saidLo. That’swhentheywenttothepolice. CommentingonthepleadealthatEdwardsentered into,defencelawyerZackMyersnotedthe victimin thecasealsohadadrugaddictionatthetimeandhis parentsneversawtheir son givethemoneytoEdwards. MyersnotedEdwardshasalreadypaidback some ofthe money hetook.
Underthetermsofthe sentence,Edwardsmust obey a curfewbetween8p.m.and6a.m,exceptforhisworkas a generalcontractorandformedicalappointments. Edwardswasalsoorderedto stay awayfromthe victimandhisfamily.

North Vancouver RCMP were alertedtoalost,out-of-boundssnowboarderonMountSeymouratabout 12:30p.m. Wednesday, saidNorth ShoreRescuesearchmanagerDon Jardine.
The19-year-oldhadleftthetopof BrocktonChairabout10:40a.m.that morning,crossedanuncontrolled
ski-areaboundaryandmadeawrong turn,hesaid.Thesnowboarderthen wentdownthedrainagecalledSuicide Gully–anareawithlittlecellservice anddangerouswaterfalls.
Jardinesaidthesnowboarder realizedhewasintroubleaftertryingto workhiswaybackupfightingagainst thesnow.Hephonedforhelpwith only10percentbatteryonhiscell. Police,however,couldn’tpinpointhis exactlocationfromthecall, making thesearchmore difficult.

Donwasbornathomeonthe family farm in Edwell, AB,onAugust1,1932. He methislifelong companion, Shirley, in high school in RedDeer,and they were marriedonSeptember 19,1956. Donobtained aCivil EngineeringDegreefrom theU of Ain1957.
Work in the constructionandprojectmanagement industriestook Donand Shirley backand forthacrossthe country.Retiringin2000 in Vancouver,they enjoyed livingclose to thewaterfrontand strollingthe West VanSeawall, as well as keeping theharbour “running smoothly” through theirconstantobservations.
Donservedonvariousboardsand wasanactivememberof Kinsmenand then Rotary formostofhislife. OneofDon’s favorite pastimeswas flying,andhe loved to take family membersfor rides in hisLakeBuccaneeramphibiousaircraft,doing watertakeoffs and landings in frontof thefamilycabinatSylvanLake, whenever hecouldfindavolunteerpassenger.
Donloved to singand play thetrumpet,thenadded thebagpipesand thebanjo, whichgavehim great joythroughouthislife. Hisloveofdiscussing politicskepthis mind sharpand sometimes, histongue sharper.Hehadaneasysmile and liked to have fun,along with awillingnesstodress up in whatever theoccasionor grandkidscalledfor,fromlarge fake glassestostrange clothes to lampshades. Foralmostevery year withthecity, heandgood friends Rudy,Cliff, and Terrytook 1-2weeksa year to fish BarkleySound, landing many aTyee. John literally hadone room in hishousededicatedtohis fishinggear.Healsoenjoyed sailingand fishing closer to homewithgood friends Gerald and Gerhard.
John lovedskiingandenjoyed teachingallofhis kids to ski Mt.Seymour, wherehelived,and Whistler.Healsolovedplayingand watchinghockey, takinghiskidsand grandkidstomanyCanucks and WorldJunior games.

Delmapassed away peacefully at NorthShoreHospice,surrounded by herdaughter Karen, granddaughters Brandiand Kelsey,andherdevotedcaregiver, Elvie.
Delma wasborninHarrowby, Manitoba,and latermoved to Winnipeg.Attheageof 12,she relocatedwithher parents and younger sister,Faye, to Burnaby, wheresheattended BurnabySouthSecondarySchool.
When Delmawas just 13 yearsold,she metthe love ofher life, Dick Alexander.She wasworkingafterschool atthe coffeecounterofherparents’ general storewhen shecaught theeye of ahandsomeyoung lumber truck driver.Two yearslater,Delma knew shewanted to marryDick, and to helpcontributeto theirwedding,she left schoolat 15 and washiredas the“Miss Revlon Girl”atthe Woodward’sdowntownstore.
On August2,1952, Delmaand Dickweremarried. Delmawasonly16yearsold.Two yearslater,they welcomedtheirdaughter Karen, followedeighteen months laterbytheirson David. By thetimeDelma was20, hercherished family wascomplete.
In 1964, Delmaand Dick took aleapof faithandopened Dick’s Lumber in Burnaby. Throughhardwork, dedication,and pride, they grew thebusiness fromhumblebeginnings into thesuccessful companyitistoday. Dick and Delmaweredeeplyappreciative of theirloyalandhardworking staff, whosecommitmentand dedicationplayedanintegralroleinthe company’ssuccess.
After thesuddenpassingof Dick in 2005, Delma,along with Karenand David, sold thecompanyin2008and began anew chapter withtheirinvestment companyin West Vancouver.Delma continued working thereuntil shortlybeforeherpassing.
Delmawas thetruematriarch ofher family.She ledwithgrace,loveand kindness, always putting family first. Herfamilywasher greatestjoy andproudestaccomplishment.
Sheloved shopping,gardening,anddiningout,and wasa well-knownregularat theParkRoyal Whitespot. Sundaybreakfastswerea family tradition,bringing togetherher largeextended family to sharecountless stories andmuchlaughter.
Delmahad aremarkablegiftfor making everyhousefeel likehome- warm,welcoming,and filledwithlovefromthe bungalow on FlemingStreet,tothe waterfronthomesat WhytecliffParkand Evergreen Avenue,and finally her treasuredpenthouseonBellevue.
Shealsoloved her many holidaysandbeautifulhomes in Maui,Birch Bay, and Palm Springs.Delma and Dick shared many wonderfuladventuresas they travelledthe worldwiththeirfriendsand family,creatingmemories that will be cherished forever.

He grew up in NorthVancouver,withfondmemories of sittingonhis father Morie'sknee watching sports andplayinghockeyandbaseballwithhis Dadas coach.
Margaret Greavescareddeeplyaboutherbeloved family in England,as well asher twochildren, Russ (Deborah)and Kim(Hal).She washappytohave four grandchildrenand twogreat-grandchildren,and cherished thememoryofherhusbandof fiftyyears, Glen.

SamwasborninKelowna into alarge family of twelve children. Fromanearly age,his firstlovewas hockey. Anaturalgoal scorer, he ledevery teamhe playedon. As ayoungboy, he walked five milesto practice,andhisgreatestfear wasthat theice rink mighthave burned down.Heplayedwellinto adulthoodand lovedtojoke, “When Iwason theice, thered light wenton!”
Sam’spassion forgolfbegan while caddyingforhis father.Healwaysdreamedofbecomingamemberof theprestigious Capilano Golf Club; adream realized in 1977.There,heforged many lastingfriendships, enjoyingendlessteasing, laughter,and friendly wagers—oftenremindingothersthat “Youdrivefor showandputtfordough.”
Afterhighschool,Sam movedtoVancouverand joinedanautomotiveaccessory company. In 1970, he formedhisown successfulagency, buildinga career that spanned more than50 years. He was widelyrespectedforhishonesty,integrity,strong work ethic, and famously firmhandshake. His competitivespiritcarried through everyaspectofhis life—“Second is forsomeoneelse.”
Aboveall else,Sam cherishedhisfamily. He shared hisloveofadventurewiththem through memorable tripstoEurope,Africa, theCaribbean,and Hawaii. Hisquick wit, quips,andone-linerswillliveon throughhischildrenand grandchildren.
Samissurvivedbyhis beloved wife of63 years, Judy;his sonKevin (Shauna);his daughter Sara (Thomas);andhisfouradored grandchildren, Ryan, Mark,Eric, and Keira. He is also lovingly remembered by hissiblings Kevin, Terry, Eileen, Shawn,and Kaye,aswellasmanyniecesand nephews.

Born in Stettin, Germany, Eber grew up in Hamburg, leavingin1962 for, supposedly, “a year”inCanada. He lived in MontrealbeforemovingtoVancouver, wherehemethisfuturewife, Doris, on alocal tennis court. During their61yearstogether,theyraised theirfourdaughtersinNorth Vancouver -Kim (Joel), Vivian (Brian),Karin (Calen),and Nicole (Paul).
Eber worked in thecar industryand, laterinlife, wenton to realizehis dreamof owninghisown companybeforeretiring to play tennisandgolf. He lovedtotraveland spend time with hisfamilyand friends.Heisfondlyremembered by hissiblings, Rosemarie, Ulrich,Dietlind,and Helmut,andhis godsons,Raphaeland Fraser.
