Capilano River Hatchery to get $49M rebuild

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is planning a major $49-million rebuild of the Capilano River Hatchery.

The 1971 facility in Capilano River Regional Park releases about 1.5 million coho, chinook and pink salmon per year and draws in more than 200,000 visitors annually. But if the hatchery is going to continue its mission of the protection and restoration of Pacific salmon, the 55-year-old complex on the river must be modernized, according to DFO. Plans have long been in the works among a partnership involving the federal government, Metro Vancouver, the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), stewardship groups and the fishing community. “It’s just that old. The building is far beyond its useful life and a lot of the infrastructure and aquaculture equipment is far beyond its useful life as well,” said David Laird, the project’s lead engineer. “It’s going to be a new building, and the public side … is going to get a major facelift and upgrade.” Today, DFO considers the Capilano Hatchery to be the flagship of its Pacific salmon enhancement program, but its educational and interpretive exhibits are badly out of date.
