A new, long-awaited affordable housing building is now open in West Vancouver.
Kiwanis Village West, comprised of two six-story buildings at 950 and 970 22nd St., has begun welcoming its first residents. The project offers a combined 156 rental units at rents 75 per cent of the current market value. Developed by Kiwanis North Shore Housing Society, the complex offers 19 studio, 46 one-bedroom, 10 one-bedroom with a den, 58 two-bedroom and 23 three-bedroom homes. The rentals are reserved for people with connections to West Vancouver, such as those who work in the community or have children attending local schools. Eleanor Minish, chair of the board at Kiwanis North Shore Housing Society, said the project aims to keep residents in the community. “We’re hoping to get people off the highway and to live in the community, bring young people back because it’s not affordable to rent in West Van,” Minish said. The project initially came to council in 2018. In 2021, West Vancouver council provided the land to Kiwanis on a 60-year lease for $1 per year. Construction broke ground in 2023 and Continued on A16
