Rain and wind wallop region as residents brace for flooding HILARY ANGUS

North Shore residents are being asked to avoid riverbanks and creeks as the municipalities brace for potential flooding from the second atmospheric river to hit the Lower Mainland in just over a week.

Approximately 48 millimetres of rain fell at Environment Canada’s official weather station in West Vancouver during the latest storm to hit the South Coast on Dec 14 and 15. That amount was even higher in North Vancouver. One backyard weather station in Lynn Valley measured 38 mm on Dec. 15 alone, while another in Blueridge measured 35 mm. B.C.’s River Forecast Centre issued a flood warning for the North Shore on Monday, stating that “river levels have or will exceed banks imminently, and that flooding of areas adjacent to the rivers affected will result.” Peter Cohen, the District of North Vancouver’s general manager of engineering infrastructure services, said crews are actively monitoring the situation, with a particular focus on the Seymour River.
