“We are very proud to be the northernmost store to bring home an award,” says owner Cameron Miller.

“I became a butcher after doing an auto engineering course when I was younger, but I did it for me, not necessarily work. I was sitting at home playing video games, and my mum pushed me to find a job, and Kyle at Waipu Butchers employed me. Kyle sold, and we eventually bought both the Waipu store and this one from the next owners. In 2021, after the second round of Covid, we had to close one down, so we chose to keep Ruakākā.”

The Stag sausage was inspired by a pizza from the Waipu Pizza Barn, but we simplified the ingredients. It is designed to taste like it was made in the bush after a hunt. It has an earthy style sausage with field mushrooms and roasted garlic with a light smoke from the cook fire.

Students encourage attendance

Bream Bay College students are participating in the Mātauranga project, sharing positive messages in the hope of improving attendance to kura through positive messages.

“Our school received funding from the Ministry of Education and Patuharakeke Trust to re-engage students back into education following Covid,” says deputy principal Junie Shelford.

“Last year, we provided in-house information for parents and whānau to have learning opportunities at home.

We provided digital devices, along with literacy and numeracy-focussed games and workshops to give whānau skills to transfer the learning into their whare and work with alongside their children.

“We want to change that narrative and have conversations to say unless you are absolutely unable to get to school today, it’s a non-negotiable — school has to be a priority. Some of the messages the kids have come up with will achieve that. They are very clever and in student speak, and that’s what we want. We had 58 families engage with the project

last year, and by all accounts, we have had a very good response. They really appreciated what they learned, and there has been improved engagement across all of our schools.

“We’re looking forward to this project having a positive effect and will know by mid-2024 if our efforts are making a difference.” ¢

Based in Bream Bay, The Supporters Squad is inviting community members to its inaugural Got Ya Gummies day in support of the I Am Hope Foundation and Gumboot Friday on Saturday, November 4, from 10am–2pm at Caledonian Park, Waipu.

“This is Bream Bay’s first mental health-focussed community event,” says founder Josh Preece.

“The community hasn’t had an intervention like this, so it’s great to get Got Ya Gummies out there. It’s something very close to my heart because we lost my brother to suicide eight years ago while we were working in the mines in Perth. It was devastating for our family and friends.”

The event is a family-run event set up by The Supporters Squad, Josh, his partner Jamie Halpin, and Josh’s mum Karen Cave.

“Since moving back to New Zealand, I’ve wanted to help others wherever possible. We chose Mike King’s I Am Hope Foundation because he already has counselling and support programmes in place. In my friends circle from my early teens to now, we know of five young males who have been lost to suicide.

“Suicide is too common and still not spoken about enough. Part of our Got Ya Gummies event is to create awareness and open up the conversation to destigmatise the topic. Mental health starts in school-age children. Mike’s foundation, I Am Hope, can get in early to help these children with guidance and

counselling. They are underfunded, and that’s why we have chosen to support their cause.

“We are proud to have a phenomenal line-up of food vendors available at the event. We hope to have people from all walks of life wearing their gumboots, and we have a fun competition for decorated boots.

“There’ll be live music and interactive events like gumboot throwing. The old boys are playing rugby in kilts and gumboots against Takahiwai, and they’ll have a game of touch with the kids — it’ll be a fun day out.

“There is no charge to get in, but we will have gold coin buckets going around. The community has really pulled together to help us, and we hope to have it as an annual fundraiser. There will be ice cream trucks, food stalls, coffee outlets, education support, bouncy castle, dance groups, musicians and more.

“The commitment and support from businesses and vendors has been immense with the whole set up for the day being donated, including the part itself. Our team are all volunteers, meaning 100% of the profits will be donated.

“I’m dedicating Got Ya Gummies to all those who didn’t get the help they needed. New Zealand, unfortunately, has the highest male youth suicide rate in the world, with farmers being the third-

Having provided the Bream Bay community with a fitness facility at Waipu, Gilbert and Tania Costello are now exploring the option of adding an indoor heated swimming pool to their premises.

“We are the proud owners of the SHrED fitness centre, which we built four years ago,” says Tania.

“My parents are dairy farmers here in Waipu, and Gilbert was born in Mangawhai and moved to Waipu when he was 10. We’ve always been sportsmad. He was into rugby and cricket, and I played hockey and tennis, and our love for sport flourished.”

Tania still plays hockey, and Gilbert is now a rugby referee.

Cultivated for thousands of years, ginger is used to add a bit of zing to culinary dishes, as a tea and in gingerbeer — it can be grown in the home garden.

The main variety is Zingiber officinale or edible ginger. Its rhizomes are found at the local supermarket and are easily obtainable. Other varieties of ginger include Japanese myoga, Chinese Yellow and galangal or Thai ginger.

None of these should be mistaken for the invasive weed commonly known as wild ginger Hedychium gardnerianum, which is inedible and a significant pest plant throughout the country.

It’s easy enough to pick up a nice plump rhizome from the supermarket

with plenty of ‘eyes’ on it. The eyes are where the shoots for the plant will sprout from — avoid any ginger roots with rot or look dried out. Ginger is usually available to buy in late winter and early spring at the local store or market. Cut the root by the eyes ensuring each piece is at least three centimetres wide then leave to dry for a few days.

Place each piece into a pot with the eye facing upwards. Use high-quality potting soil with some orchid mix to provide a free-draining medium. The rhizome should be covered with just enough soil to keep it moist but not

soaking wet. Keep watered, and the shoots should appear within a few weeks. Once the plants have established in the pots, they can be transplanted to a larger container and grown on or into the garden. Some growers advise ginger should be grown solely in pots for ease of harvesting and to prevent any spread of the rhizomes.

The tricky part comes where the soil is concerned. It must have excellent drainage. The best option for planting in the garden is to use raised beds at least 20cm above the ground to provide the best growing conditions

for ginger plants. Space each plant at 20cm with a planting depth of five centimetres. The site should be warm, with good shelter and with some shade. Feed regularly with dressings of blood and bone to keep the plants lush and healthy — it will also promote large, strong roots.

Once the plants are established, they can either be harvested in autumn as a crop or left permanently in the garden and the root cut as needs dictate. Talk to your local garden centre about options for available cultivars to suit your needs. ¢

After three years of cancelled events, the organisers of the Top of the Rock fun fitness event in Kaiwaka are excited for the initiative to be returning on Sunday, March 17 2024.

“Top of the Rock started in 2000 as a bike/run event, but with so many rules and regulations, we changed it to the current run/walk event,” says committee member Jennie Reynolds.

“It is the biggest fundraiser that our Kaiwaka Sports Complex puts on annually. We have 11 affiliated clubs at the sports complex, and the money raised helps with the upkeep and repairs, which are always needed. This year’s event will help us reroof the gym and fitness rooms.”

Top of the Rock is a fun five or 10km run/walk for adults. Young children must be with an adult for the 10km run.

“Unfor tunately, due to safety reasons, we are unable to go to the top of Baldrock now, but we have found a solution by using Anderson farm. It has a fantastic hill taller than Baldrock, with stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside.

“In the past, we’ve had entries from people ages 5 to 90 years old, with more than 300 competitors coming from as far afield as Kerikeri and Tauranga, as well as lots of entries from locals.

The children under 11 have a free bike ride where they race around the KSA incorporating the school grounds next door.

“With March 17 being Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day, we are encouraging entrants and spectators to come along in their green outfits with a spot prize up for grabs for the best.”

Movember began humbly with an idea floated by two Australian friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery.

They convinced 30 of their mates to grow moustaches in 2003, and by 2004, they had focussed on a cause: fighting prostate cancer through early detection.

That year, the lads raised $57,618 for six related charities.

By 2007, New Zealand had got in behind the Movember initiative, too.

Soon, the number of nations supporting the cause would grow to 20, including the UK, US and many European and

stigmatisation and ridicule of men who admit they have mental health problems, and the fear of facing issues such as depression alone all contribute to this nation’s shocking suicide statistics, some of the world’s worst. Men are three or four times more likely to die this way than women.

“The number of men taking their own lives around the world is one of the biggest challenges of our time.

Movember is working to ensure all men and boys look after their mental health Asian countries. From 30 mo bros, the ranks of those who have participated have grown to encompass more than six million people. Movember donations have funded more than 1,320 health projects directly affecting men.

The focus, through the years, has been on three of the biggest killers of men. These are prostate and testicular cancers and suicide. New Zealand’s societally dismissive attitude toward mental health, its lack of funding, the

Morgan Chandler-Bruce grew up around horses with her mum working in the horse racing industry and is now passionate about saving the Kaimanawa horses.

“My mum worked in the racing industry with trotters and pacers, so I was very lucky to grow up around horses,” says Morgan.

“Mum was based in Kumeu, and when I was a baby, I’d sit in my pram in an empty stable with my toys while she worked. I was an easy child, and the staff all worked together and would watch me while mum was with her horses.

“

The Kaimanawa horses are New Zealand’s wild horses, found on the army base in Waiouru, just out of Taupō.

would go back to attend different camps or workshops. I ended up helping Kelly with her photography workshops and would prepare the horses and things.”

In 2021, Morgan stayed with Kelly as part of her Freedom to Friendship Stallion Challenge team. Freedom to Friendship is a competition showing how Kaimanawa Stallions progress with training.

“He was a zone 20 horse, which is the area of the Kaimana ranges he came out of. That area is around 20km in from the main road. I never left for two and a half years and came home in March this year. With Long Shot, I finished sixth overall and placed in the top six in all of his classes at the 2021 Freedom to Friendship Stallion Challenge.

“We finished first overall in the teams’ division with Kelly, taking Team Gold, and he received the winner’s garland and rug.

I love that Kaimanawas are extremely versatile, talented horses, and I’ve learned so much from them both from a personal and training perspective. I recently went to Equifest, which replaced

the Stallion Challenge due to the damage from the cyclones cancelling the muster. Equifest showcases the horses from musters or born in domestication and is an invitation-only event. Thirteen Kaimanawa from across the North Island were on show — it was very special.

“I took Athos, my stallion, who is now gelded, and placed second overall and won Fan Favourite. I sold him in March, and his new owners loaned him to me for Equifest. Lil, the five-year-old sister of his new owner, came and won the Young Gun Award.

“I had a riding accident and still have an injury, so I initially turned the invitation to compete down. Then I received the most gorgeous videos of Lil playing with Athos at liberty and riding him bridleless, and her 12-year-old sister does the same.

“I said to Kelly, ‘wouldn’t it be cute if we had a team for the freestyle competition’, and she said, ‘well why don’t you?’ So I went back to them five weeks before the competition and said if I was well enough, we’ll give it a go.”

Athos was sent to Morgan from Ruakākā after she decided to attempt attending the competition, giving her three weeks of training time.

“When I had my riding accident, it slowed me down, but I was really careful and paced myself, and managed to spend time with him, which was encouraging for me. Because he is well-trained, knows his job and loves to please, he made it easy. Lil learned her part two days before the competition and they did extremely well.

“There are approximately 20 Kaimanawas up here in Northland that I know of, and that’s a beautiful thing.

There are also people who have them in paddocks that don’t realise what they are. People can follow the Kaimanawa Legacy Foundation or Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Facebook pages.

“I strongly recommend if someone is interested to get their kids along to pony clubs but don’t have a horse, find a club with a riders without horses programme.

These help people who may not have a horse, the funds or the means to have

one, but you can access the use of one through programme.

“Besides horses, I enjoy photography.

I find it really relaxing playing around with different angles and things. I was able to lead the Sunrise to Sunset Kaimanawa Ranges photography bus tour last December, which was a huge highlight.

“It was breathtaking getting up close and personal and seeing where my horse came from. The horses that are still there are amazing, and the bus driver got as close as 10 metres to a band of stallions.

“To give me something to work towards, as my health improves, I aim to photograph different competitions and do photoshoots with people and their horses full-time once I’m strong enough.

“Athos was the Reserve Champion at the stallion challenge in 2022 and at the recent competition. To say I’m proud of him and everything he achieved is an understatement. He couldn’t have been more perfect and tried his absolute hardest for Lil and I.” ¢

Tomarata School’s annual fireworks night is set for Saturday, November 11, at the Tomarata Domain on Pakiri Block Road, helping to raise funds for a school van.

“This is set to be the hottest event in the local social calendar,” says organiser Libby Clews.

“We would love the community to come and celebrate with us. We have a great line-up, including live music from the Kaiwaka band Happy Fish, rides, bouncy castles, face painting, braids and spray-on tattoos.

“Tomarata is a really nice rural school. We’re fundraising for a van so they can easily transport the children to their nature classroom and be able to attend other cultural events for present and future children. I think it’s really important for them to be able to explore and attend other outside activities.”

Libby says it’s exciting that the students can get out into nature, climb

trees, build huts and be involved in their garden-to-table programme.

“They call themselves a little country school with a big heart, and they really are. It’s a tight-knit community, and the Tomarata fireworks provide them a chance to raise much-needed funds.

“We suggest people pack a picnic rug and get ready for an amazing night out. There will be food trucks with a delicious array of meals, snacks, desserts, drinks and coffee, and, of course, the main attraction will be a huge pyrotechnic display.

“Stalls include Henna artists, face painters, glow items, and we have a surprise for the children, which will be super fun. We’ve also introduced an under fives area, which will have a

bouncy castle dedicated to them at a small cost, a ball pit and soft play area.

“We will draw our amazing raffle. It’s $10 a ticket, available from the school office or at the glow tent on the night.

There are some amazing prizes. The school will have information on what they offer available at the glow tent.

“We have an amazing parking plan with lots of lighting this year, and it’ll be on the Tomarata Fireworks Facebook page. The Coastguard and Rotary are helping us.

“We’re so excited after two years of cancellations, which was devastating for the school and are very grateful for the community support we have received because funding has been very difficult this year. New World Mangawhai and

Mason Contractors have been an amazing support, along with others who have helped in small ways.

“Leabourn buses are providing a pick up at the Mangawhai Museum and Wellsford District Community Centre.
