Kaiwaka School has entered the school song competition run by competition Te Ahu o te Reo Māori with their song Pukekaroro.

“We decided to use Pukekaroro as it is our school pepeha in song form written

by Whaea Mina Paikea and her mother,” says principal Sharlene Tornquist.

“Pepeha is a way of introducing yourself in Māori. It tells others who you are and helps you share your connections with the people and places that are important to you.

“Pukekaroro is about our local maunga, mountain, and it is a very special song to us and we always use it when a new child starts school as their welcoming pōwhiri and we use it in our kapa haka set at festivals and events.”

“We appreciate all Whaea Mina gives to our children and what she does to give them an understanding of the place they belong. Every area has a local mountain, and it is important as it has a feeling.

The Northland Regional Council has awarded eight $3,000 scholarships, designed to provide a springboard for future environmental leaders and champions, with One Tree Point’s Josh Otene being one recipient.

“The council received 40 applications for this year’s Tū i te ora Scholarships,” says NRC chair Penny Smart.

“The annual scholarships recognise, encourage and support students to undertake study, research or training that relates to council’s environmental and regulatory functions, whilst contributing to council’s vision ‘Our Northland — together we thrive’.

“The scholarships also aim to build Māori capacity within Te Tai Tokerau and assist students in pursuing further education, encourage greater uptake of

study unrelated to council, such as nursing, teaching and sport, targeting people engaged in study related to council’s environmental and regulatory functions instead.

“A four-strong judging panel comprised of members of council’s Community Engagement, Māori Engagement, and Environmental Services teams, and a Te Taitokerau Māori and Council Working Party representative reviewed the applications.

The Mangawhai Artists Gallery is presently showing the Spontaneous 3D exhibition showing multiple diverse works created from a wide range of materials.

“Spontaneous 3D is an unscheduled, unprompted and impulsive exhibition drawing together a collection of diverse, innovative and inspirational 3D works from 27 artists working across a range of media,” says Mangawhai Artists chair Belinda Vernon.

“A gap appeared in the fully subscribed gallery exhibition season two weeks ago,

“One of the calls I made was to Nicola Everett, asking her not only to contribute to the exhibition but also to curate it. This was to ensure the works were presented as an exhibition, not a collection of disparate works.

“As the range of works were delivered to the gallery, I realised how important that call to Nicola was.”

There are sculptures and 3D works which aren’t often exhibited together.

“This is a great opportunity for people to come and see a unique set of artworks,” says Nicola.

There are physical limitations with 3D artworks and sculptures as you need space to show it off and Howard Esler put his hand up to organise a pop-up 3D exhibition.”

Howard had been wanting a 3D exhibition at the gallery for years.

“This was my chance to make it happen, and I wasn’t going to let it pass,” says Howard.

“I worked the phone and encouraged, coaxed and pulled in favours to draw together an extraordinary set of works from an extraordinary number of artists.

”

“We hope that it encourages people to continue exhibiting in this format.

The exhibition is very inclusive, with a wide variety of work made from many different materials.

“There are physical limitations with 3D artworks and sculptures as you need space to show it off. There are relief works that stick out from the wall, and other pieces are displayed in a variety of ways around the premises.

“The event provides an opportunity for people who view the art to question or wonder what sculpture is and the different meanings behind each piece.

“Some of the artists exhibiting have wood, wire, plaster, ceramics, bronze, flax, steel and concrete as well as found objects such as a toilet bowl from the men’s prison in Auckland.

“Created as part of TV series Design Junkies NZ 2019 by Aaron McConchie called ‘Game of …’, the repurposed prison toilet was sourced from a building demo yard. It was turned into a stool

retaining the utilitarian ability to be sat on. Set with sharp barbs of old safety barriers, simultaneously inviting and repelling the viewer or user to consider the challenge to sit on it or not.

“This exhibition is not to be missed as it is intriguing and asks questions of its viewers. There is something for everyone to enjoy, and people will find something of value and interest.”

With the trend shifting towards more produce being grown at home, incorporating fruit- and nut-bearing trees can be a challenge.

However, these days , with developments by horticulturalists of dwarf varieties, the impossible becomes possible. Whether you live on an urban section, lifestyle block or a farm, one nut-bearing tree should be a serious consideration — the macadamia.

Macadamias have been grown commercially for more than 30 years, give or take a decade. The nuts these trees produce are sweet-tasting treats, hailed at times as a so-called superfood. All the hype aside, this member of the protea family can serve as an attractive specimen tree and a food provider.

The main varieties available are Macadamia tetraphylla and Macadamia integrifolia. Both types are hardy and will grow in various soil types, even clay, as long as they have good drainage.

If allowed, macadamias can grow up to 20 metres high. However, it’s recommended by growers to keep the height at a more manageable three to four metres to enable easier harvesting of the nuts.

When establishing young trees, providing shelter and a frost-free position in a warm, sunny site is essential. This species grows in temperate and subtropical climates,

with many cultivars now developed to suit New Zealand conditions. Depending on your region, choose a macadamia that will do best in your area.

Provide your young trees with plenty of compost and well-rotted manure, and plenty of water during the dry months.

Installing a trickle irrigation system is helpful if mass planting as part of an orchard system. Mulching around the base and providing a weed-free area will assist in good establishment of the root system.

While they can produce fruit as early as two years old, the plants usually provide the first crop between five to

eight years. Some varieties can take longer to fruit, so it is a tree requiring patience in that regard.

Planting at least two trees is essential to ensure the panicles (flowers) are pollinated for later fruit development. The nuts are ready for harvesting between May and August, depending on the variety. Pruning should be done to keep the centre of the tree open to aid pollination and at a manageable height.

Ten years is a long time in business and a milestone to celebrate. As the well-respected Mangawhai Meat Shop reaches double digits, resident butcher Dan Klink reflects on a career in cuisine.

“It’s pretty surreal, actually. Looking back it’s hard to imagine where the time has gone,” says Dan. He has garnered a cult following and a trophy cabinet of awards for his edible artistry.

“When I set out into business, at the age of 25, I had a lot to learn, but it’s been a process in which I’ve had plenty of support from family, from the public, and from the team we’ve built here.”

The years have also seen hard work interspersed with victories in competition. Dan has been on the podium twice for his sausages in the contest to find the nation’s best. He was also a regional winner in the Young Butcher of the Year awards in an industry demanding precision and focus.

“We always try to be as innovative as possible when it comes to new flavours and combinations,” says Dan of his sausages.

He also spent a tenure in Melbourne, working with mentors who helped him develop a signature part of his repertoire; creative, innovative flavours in sausages. He’s still in contact with them today.

“I couldn’t have reached 10 years without all those who have stood beside us and supported us through all that time,” says Dan. “The team, and all of those customers who have been with us from day one, even those who can remember me as

The east coast is set to become a municipality in its own right, as growth on a scale not seen since the settlement of Auckland’s North Shore propels a wave of prosperity and change.

From the establishment of worldclass golf courses at Te Ārai through to the expanded marina development at Marsden Cove, this once-quiet seacoast has transformed from a chain of holiday hamlets into a destination for lifestyle aspirations. The statistics tell the tale.

Mike Lindsay is a Northland Rescue Helicopter ambassador and a Northland business leader who believes locals should put extra emphasis on workplace safety this winter.

“I am also a rescue helicopter ambassador after having an accident myself nearly 10 years ago,” says Mike.

“The chopper team was fast, effective, friendly and professional, and they saved and changed my life. I founded Training 4 Safety to train others regarding workplace safety. More than 2,000 Northlanders have undertaken Training 4 Safety courses and refreshers annually across dozens of disciplines every year, and demand continues to grow.”

Mike is reminding people to keep up their workplace safety through the winter months.

“Over the past two years, there have been many Covid disruptions. It is easy to take your eye off the ball when undertaking work tasks, and that is when people get hurt.

“In the wintertime, there can be a whole range of bad weather, from lightning to heavy rainfall and strong winds. All these things together, or as individual events, can cause all sorts of chaos at home, work or on the roads.

“Lightning strikes and thunderstorms can cause havoc with our power and other systems. If there is really bad weather, it is not a good idea to be outside in the middle of a big open

space or up on the roof of your house doing maintenance. Staying inside is the safest option.”

He urges people to look out for each other in floods.

“We should all keep updated with warnings and information from Civil Defence Northland and weather forecasting services. You should never head out and check out the local river or areas where the water’s rising and could cause serious flooding.

“Never cross a swollen river, even if you have thoroughly researched all the safety measures in place, because there are too many unknown dangers. Failing to ensure these safety measures can result in terrible outcomes.

“I know of an incident recently where a motorist drove into very deep floodwaters. Their vehicle was a writeoff, and they put their safety at great risk.

“People often underestimate the danger of high winds when driving as powerful gusts can easily knock people off course, which is why they should slow down and drive with extra caution. Highsided trucks and trailers are at extra risk because they are a bigger target.

“If you can delay travelling in bad weather, then keep off the roads and

stay home. It only takes a moment of distraction for a car to cross the centre line and crash into an oncoming vehicle. After growing up in the country, Gus and Jen Ross wanted to return to a rural lifestyle after years of city living.

“Gus came from a sheep and beef farm in Gisborne, and after returning from overseas, we were living in Auckland, but we wanted to keep a rural lifestyle,” says Jen. “Gus had been shearing in England, and we then lived in Auckland for nine years. He worked in international trade with organic produce, while I worked in animal nutrition.

“People want to make a relationship with their growers and know who grows their food, how and where, rather than going to the supermarket. People come and see our gardens and get their veggies on a Tuesday, from 4pm–6pm.

“We are a one-stop-shop, as we grow a wide range of seasonal vegetables, which are better than just salad greens.

“They quiz us on how things are grown and wander the gardens as a firsthand experience. It is nice to have the connection, and we are really open with how we do things.

“We practise organic growing principles because it is important to us to produce food that is completely spray and chemical-free. We get great satisfaction growing high-quality food in a home garden manner.

”

“We harvest no further out than 48 hours before customers receive their orders. Most of the time, we pick the day of delivery to gain a higher nutrient profile, and we can harvest plants close to their full maturity.

“We get a lot of comments that our vegetables taste like they should, rather than the often bland supermarket taste.

People love our rainbow carrots, they are sweet and taste very strongly of carrot and children really enjoy them. Being spray-free is our personal choice, but it was also a customer-driven requirement because so many people won’t go near sprayed products. Customers are more educated now and are wary of what is being put on to food crops.

“The no-dig concept preserves soil life and structure, giving us better plants

Jen and Gus also offer a pick your own flowers service.

“I love cut flowers, and it made sense to incorporate flowers into the business because they add beauty and bring insects in for pollinating the vegetable plants. From October to May, people come by appointment and have the whole garden to themselves to pick buckets of flowers. We have brides come for bridal flowers, and because it is all hands on, it becomes a part of the wedding experience.

“The flowers are seasonal and grown outdoors, nothing is wrapped in plastic, and it follows the pick your own strawberries model. You enjoy the process as well as the end product.

“We also run Airbnb accommodation, and people love to come for a night or two. With our guest suite, people can pre-order their vegetables to be ready

waiting for them, or they can pick their own.

“Couples love picking their own flowers while they are here and having a sundown picnic with a view on the property.

“We have linked up with other food businesses like the Chocolate Barn and Belle Chevre Creamery and started the Waipū Roving Rural Market with other locally made artisanal products.

“The market is hosted on a different stallholder’s property on the first Friday of every month so people can see first-hand where everything is made and grown. People can check out the Roving Rural Market-Waipū or Left Fields Facebook pages or website for details.

“We don’t do shearing anymore, but we do have Texel sheep and a house cow. We grow our own beef and are as self-sustainable as we can be in terms of vegetables and milk.

“We set out with ambitions for a lifestyle, and part of that is sharing with our local community to create a sustainable income.” ¢

“The artists enjoy being part of the show and catching up with other artists,

and as of last Friday, we had already sold considerable pieces. It is an exciting thing to be involved with and something positive for the community as a whole — it is a show not to be missed.
