“I was brought up in Mangawhai village when there were only four other boys in my Mangawhai Primary School class,” said Adam.

“It was a small, rural and isolated environment. It has changed significantly since then; I used to know every single person in the town, but now, I barely know anybody. We were a workingclass family who struggled through life, and here I am. I opened my brewery a year ago.”

Adam was a surveyor and also did some property development, which is how he came across his Pacific Coast Beverages property.

with advice. My ultimate goal is to create a community focal point for the town.

“There is not really anywhere for people to have a large birthday or wedding, and I want to create that space — a place for people to relax and have a good time.

This year, the brewery won accolades at two festivals, the Northland Fritter Festival and the Lager Festival in Mount Maunganui.

“Our most popular beverage is our Beach Break Pilsner”

“I put a 10-acre vineyard on it. I thought about putting a winery there, too, but decided a brewery appealed to me more. It was always an aspiration of mine. The brewery was an exciting venture to be involved in, and it has a great community of people who are fun to work with. It was an excellent fit for me.

“I enjoy creating new tastes and flavours for people to savour. I love meeting people and engaging with the Mangawhai community. They are all fairly passionate about what we are doing — they get right behind it. We get a lot of support from the local council

“The Northland Fritter Festival award is our second accolade this year. It was a perfect fit for us. It was an amazing day. Whoever organised it did a great job because everyone at the festival looked like they were enjoying themselves, and so did we.

“Our Pilsner won the best beer and people’s choice award at the Lager Festival. It was a good achievement. It feels great, and it makes me feel like we are on the right track and not going down a rabbit hole. We are producing good-quality beers and spirits, and that is what I aim for.

“My favourite beer that I make is the West Coast IPA. It is a strong, clear, bright and easy-drinking beer. Our most popular beverage is our Beach Break Pilsner. It is a tasty and easy-todrink beer.” ¢

Rescue chopper seeks support

A proposal by the Northland Regional Council to cancel emergency services support from June 30 to soften a planned rate increase has sparked an open letter to NRC ratepayers and Northland Rescue Helicopter supporters.

“We are extremely grateful to the Northland Regional Council and Northland ratepayers for the support provided to the Northland Rescue Helicopters through the council’s Emergency Services Fund (ESF),” said NEST chair Paul Ahlers.

“This fund provides valuable support to us and other rescue organisations in Northland and is created through a targeted rate of $12 per household included in your annual rates bill.

“Unfortunately, this leaves us almost no time at all to replace the funding gap. Under this scenario, NEST will almost certainly have to run under a deficit, and this will place us under tremendous financial pressure.

“The NRC has used the rationale that rescue services are not core business, but the evolution of almost all rescue services has started in small communities and is driven by our inherent desire as people to help one

“This fund provides valuable support to us and other rescue organisations in Northland”

“Each year, we are required to find $1.2 million of community funding to cover the basic cost of our operations. However, the NRC has just released its consultation document on the Long Term Plan and is proposing that the Emergency Services Fund be scrapped.

“This will be devastating for our helicopter service, which receives the greatest level of support from this fund. Of the $12 per household currently levied in the ESF rate, approximately $6 of this goes to our rescue helicopter service.

another. That’s what communities are all about.”

The NRC has provided an option in the consultation document that could see community funding for emergency services continue at the current level.

“We know how hard things are for Northland households at the moment, but we would urge you to support at the very least a continuation of what you’re currently giving to help fund rescue services in your community.

To create a submission to the NRC and have your voice count, you will need to go to nrc.govt.nz/futureplan.

“The NRC must listen to the community it serves. So, that’s why it’s really important that as many people as possible provide submissions in support of continuing the community funding for our helicopter service.

“Let’s be clear. If people don’t speak up, the NRC will remove the funding and use it to pay for other council services. The submission process is only open for a short time and closes on April 19.” ¢

Engineering at its best

With an office in Mangawhai, the team at RS Eng has been in operation since 1952, based in Whangārei, supporting the whole of the north with engineering needs.

“Logan Holt is our structural civil engineer based at his office at 18 Black Swamp Road, and we’re pleased to have him working alongside us,” says RS Eng manager Neil Brown.

Logan has worked in the construction industry for more than 25 years — 10 years as a carpenter and 15 years as an engineer.

“Our structural design services include minor house alterations to high-end architectural houses, sculptures, seismic assessment of existing buildings and design of complex commercial and industrial buildings,” says Logan.

“My wife Maris and I moved to Mangawhai three years ago from Auckland to be closer to surf beaches. Maris is from the east coast of North Carolina, and a coastal lifestyle was a priority for us.

“We have an 11-month-old boy, and bringing him up here is the dream life we’ve been looking for. Mangawhai is a friendly community with so much natural beauty, and to us, this is it — we haven’t looked back.

“I chose to pursue engineering as I wanted a career with the flexibility of where I could live. After following snow around the world as a sponsored snowboarder

for 10 years, I got my first engineering role in Wanaka. These days, board time on the snow has changed to surfing with Maris and mates.

“My dad’s a builder, and I feel very fortunate to have worked with him during my 20s. I lean on that knowledge every day as an engineer. He recently built our first home here, too, which was another dream come true.

“One of my favourite things about being an engineer is getting exposure to the creative process of building and designing. Working alongside architects and contractors, getting to see stunning sections of land and working with clients to make their dreams come true.”

Logan says RS Eng has a very down-toearth work environment and the team is a great crew of genuine like-minded people.

“The team includes geotechnical engineers that carry out investigations of the soil properties and geology. It’s a great synergy having the two specialisations under the same roof, which provides a lot of value to the client.

“RS Eng’s philosophy is to recognise the potential of ambitious ideas while maintaining the importance of a cost-effective solution. We strive to consistently deliver visionary thinking and innovative and practical solutions to our clients.

“No job is too big or too small for us. We’re always willing to collaborate and value working alongside other industry professionals to achieve the best outcomes for our clients.” ¢

We have met many local people, and others stop by as they pass through. People from Maungatūroto often travel over especially to visit as well, which is lovely.

“Every Wednesday, we have a group of ladies come in to spend time together, and that is nice to see.

“We use Orb coffee, and our customers love it, and we have room for around 70 people, so there is lots of space, and we make all our own food, including pies, slices, sandwiches and roasts.

“We have five staff on-site, and we have a lot of good times together”

“We are open from 5am until 8pm seven days a week. We have the motel on-site, too, and often have truck drivers or people passing through stop for the night because there is spacious parking and the workers like that.”

Houy says it is also a great place for people from nearby to have an easy night away.

“Kaiwaka is a great destination, even if you are local. We love seeing people from the area pop in for lunch or family dinners to give the cook in their family time out from cooking. We certainly appreciate the community visiting us. For dinner we have roast

A cool little number

Who doesn’t recall when a cyclamen didn’t appear on the window sill in all its flowering glory, only to end up dead from overwatering or dried out because it was forgotten?

My late mum had a habit of collecting cyclamens during her long lifetime. There, they would sit forgotten and die off at the rate of knots. It’s the story of many indoor plants picked up at the supermarket or local garden centre in flower looking perfect but not for long if a green thumb isn’t one’s forte.

Horticulturalists have developed this humble low-growing plant to sport a range of stunning flowering shades — pinks, purples, reds and whites lasting throughout autumn and into early spring. All cultivars are single-flowering on a long stem above the attractive silvery foliage. Bloom forms can be single, ruffled or bicoloured, while others are developed for fragrance.

While most are used as indoor plants, cyclamens can be grown outdoors with

Cyclamens are a cool weather plant rather than a denizen of the summer heat. It grows from a corm that remains dormant during the summer and then puts on growth in autumn when it’s cooler.

the right conditions. The plants like cool, dappled shade in a well-sheltered spot away from cold wind and frost. Since they are corms, the top needs to be just above the soil surface — if planted too deep, they will fail to grow. The soil must be well drained and loose, with plenty of organic matter provided for optimum growth. Regular watering during the growing season is essential. The soil should be moist but not soaking wet — avoid watering the corm directly.

For plants kept indoors, the soil medium should be a high-quality potting

mix. Mixes with watering crystals should be avoided at all costs — otherwise, the corm will rot in its pot. Keep the soil moist but not wet and provide filtered light for the plant. Water from the bottom by filling the saucer and letting the plant soak it up. Any excess water should be drained off. Feed the plants with weak applications of liquid fertiliser and trim off any spent leaves and flowers. Reduce watering as the leaves die off, and then sparingly when the cyclamen goes dormant in late spring. ¢

Keeping the lights on

The Mangawhai Museum community is excited to have spent time with More FM’s John, Flash and Toast last week.

“The team dropped in during their trip to highlight Northland, encouraging locals to enjoy attractions at their back door,” says museum manager Angela Cook.

“They were amazing and so positive, not only about Mangawhai but supporting not-for-profit organisations in smaller places that don’t always have the budget for airtime.”

With the Brynderwyns closed, the team is encouraging people to visit small towns as a destination instead of just a detour.

“John, Flash and Toast focussed on some of the stories in the museum and engaged in the exhibits and loved hearing about the Big Dig and the diving bell on display.

“They also highlighted that the museum turns 10 this December and encouraged people to come along and see us if they haven’t already. We’re planning special things to honour those involved in creating this space and we’ll certainly be having a special cake at the time.

“Currently, there is a nationwide campaign led by Museums Aotearoa called Keep the Lights On to draw attention to the shortage of funding for galleries and museums across the country. It‘s a very real issue as

admissions only cover a quarter of our operating costs. The rest we generate in funding and grant applications of which only a portion are successful.

“Often when they’re declined. It’s not based on our merits, but there isn’t sufficient funding to give out. People are wearing T-shirts with ‘Keep the Lights On’ standing next to items that they care about in museums to draw attention because we want people to continue to have access to our taonga and stories.

“A specific event is scheduled for April 15 where major museums with outdoor light installations will be turning off the lights in a synchronised stand to highlight the problem. All external lighting will turn off as a public display of our culture crisis. The question is: Can New Zealand museums be saved?

“Keeping the doors open is important. We generate 75 per cent of our operational expenses from projects and have been seeking a target rate for some

time. Rising insurance, health and safety and other costs are so much higher but we can’t make our admissions higher as we want as many people as possible to have access to our displays.

“We need to ensure our community can see what we all have. People can go to museumsandgalleriesmatter.org. nz for more information.

“Our team is also excited for our annual book fare this weekend from Good Friday through to Easter Monday — it’s a win for everyone from 10am–4pm daily. There are some wonderful books up for grabs.”

A destination like no

A year after opening Waipu Caves Farm Park, Ian and Cindy Fox with their daughter Jade, the privately owned park is gaining popularity with travellers and locals now arriving, saying they have heard about the place from friends.

“Even travellers from around the world are arriving in New Zealand intending to visit The Milky Way Glow Worm Cave having heard about it in their own country,” says Ian.

“Waipu Caves Farm Park is a destination like no other. There is the campground for tenting or motorhomes and The Jurassic Walks, which is a range of walking tracks around the 320-acre property, and now, The Jurassic Climbs.

“The Jurassic Climbs is three rock cliff crags set up for climbing and bouldering. There is so much to do to immerse yourself in nature at Waipu Caves Farm Park.

“You can pet and feed the friendly goats and sheep or swim in the rockbottomed river, have fun with the kids in the bush hut building area, do the Burma trail at night if camping there.”

Ian and Cindy are constantly adding new activities for families to enjoy, as

well as schools and youth groups that stay for camps or day visits.

“Before spring, we will have our cross-country running and mud run set out for schools to use, and we will start public running and cycling events next summer. We also plan to have small music and performing arts events here.

“The Milky Way Glow Worm Cave was a secret until we opened and we’re one of the few guided cave tours where you can take photos.

“With lights off, you see New Zealand’s world-famous glow worms and learn about their life cycle. You’re taught cave conservation. It’s geology and ecology and the cave environment but it’s not just the cave tours.

“Waipu Caves Farm Park and, in particular, the Milky Way Glow Worm Cave, is quickly becoming a major destination in lower Northland.” ¢

Adding value to others

For Waipu resident Emma Harrington, the chance to help business owners get ahead with their dreams by starting Enhance Creative Business Solutions was an opportunity she couldn’t walk away from.

“I grew up between Christchurch and Auckland and attended Nga Tawa boarding school in Marton, which is the Wellington Diocesan School for girls,” says Emma.

“I originally met my husband Daniel while down there. I completed a commerce degree majoring in marketing and international business and did my first year of law as well.”

Emma recently started her business, Enhance Creative Business Solutions, to add value to other people’s businesses.

human resource and training manager and eventually the area manager for Wellington and Christchurch.”

Daniel and Emma reconnected in Christchurch.

“We married in 2009. Post Christchurch earthquakes, my parents brought a holiday home in Waipu Cove, and we began holidaying here and fell in love with the area.

surfing. I wanted to share my passion with others and saw the opportunity to start a surf school at Waipu Cove.

“Eventually, the time came to sell our amazing business and our friends Ellen and Grae Snelling bought it. Ellen was one of our coaches, and they have continued to do an incredible job with the business.

“Seeing that lightbulb moment of empowerment come on for others when they succeed excites me”

“After my studies, I went on my OE and lived in London for two years. I worked in hospitality and retail fashion when I was younger and secured a position at Esprit in London.

“I became the UK training manager and helped open approximately nine stores, recruiting and training staff. It was an amazing experience.

“When I returned to New Zealand, I worked for Cue and Veronika Maine fashion stores. I began as a store manager before becoming the national

“During some July school holidays, we were here, and the Bream Bay College head of department position was advertised. Daniel applied and was offered the role, initially for one year, and here we are 11 years later.

“This is the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere and it truly feels like home, and we now have three children. I studied a small business management course to refresh myself and then created Learn to Surf Waipu Cove.”

Emma became interested in surfing after a lesson in Portugal.

“When we moved here, I had a surf lesson in Mangawhai and fell in love with

“Part of my interests was also managing Aspiring Leaders, a national trust developing youth leaders with a forum every year hosted by MPs in parliament in Wellington. Aspiring Leaders is still going and I’m still involved.

“Youth 18–26 years old are nominated as leaders within their community, universities, councils and corporate offices. It’s about the ‘heart behind leadership’, and in parliament, we talk about the people behind the politicians.

“It’s about serving the people you’re representing as a leader rather than leading out of self-interest. The programme helps develop personal

character with leadership and instils qualities that are essential to being a good leader.

“Daniel and I also run Northland Christian Surfers and CSGroms Surf and Skate youth group weekly over the summer months. We love our kids and know the importance of having a positive outlet for adventure to connect, hang out and be safe.

“We’re in the surf if it’s good — otherwise, we go to skateparks. We have hot chips or snacks at the beach, and the kids hang out, connect and build friendships while having fun. People can check out what we are doing on the CSGroms Instagram page.

“When Covid hit I loved being 100 per cent at home within my local community and, like many others, Covid changed the way we did life.

“I went to check the surf one morning and was offered a job to work for Mike and Lloyd at the Jetson Group Restaurants, which owns The Cove restaurant.

“In my three and a half years there, my role grew with them and diversified into many different roles within the business. They became my very close friends, and we had lots of adventures and fun.

“At the end of 2023, I decided to have the summer off working to focus on quality time with my family, and we travelled in our caravan for five weeks. Upon returning to Waipu, family and friends started asking me for input and advice for their businesses.

“I realised the number of people that I could add value to and help with my experience and that there was potential to start a business and Enhance Creative Business Solutions was born.

“Having owned a business myself, I know what owning a business involves, and I understand the many different elements. I believe it’s best for the owners to focus on the areas of their business that they enjoy the most and I can assist and support them in other aspects.

“I’m passionate about empowering and equipping business owners and their teams with the skills, knowledge and support they need to achieve their goals.

“With more than 20 years of experience in various businesses and industries, I understand the ever-evolving landscape of the business world. My marketing degree and Postgraduate Certificate in Small Business Management formed

the foundation and grounded my skills and knowledge.

“As head of marketing and public relations for the Jetson Group Restaurants until December 2023, I took care of content creation, photographs and communication through social media, websites, email marketing, as well as any print advertising.

“People can follow my Enhance Creative Business Solutions Facebook page. With my former retail, national human resources and training manager experience in the fashion industry, I’m comfortable and confident in assisting with all areas of people development, both the fun and not-so-fun parts.

“Through the Aspiring Leaders Forum, I’m experienced with all aspects of the not-for-profit sector and am passionate about the ethos behind forpurpose organisations.”

Emma says she is excited to use her diverse expertise to help business owners.

“By working with people to understand their unique challenges, goals, and aspirations, I can support them in creating customised strategies that align with their vision and drive sustainable growth.

“Whether they’re starting up and looking to establish their brand presence or are an established company aiming to boost sales and market share, I’m confident that I can help them achieve their objectives.

“If anyone wants to know more, they can feel free to get in touch with me and see how I can help enhance and elevate their brand.

“If you thread together all my different experiences from a training manager to coaching in the surf school and working with others, you will see how much I love helping other people achieve their goals.

“Seeing that lightbulb moment of empowerment come on for others when they succeed excites me.

“Life is about people, and Daniel and I love being in the Waipu area. There is nowhere else like it in the world. We love the raw natural beauty of the region and how warm and engaging the community is.

“Like the Maori proverb says: ‘He aha te mea nui? Māku e kii atu, he tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata’ — ‘What is the most important thing in the world? Well, let me tell you, it is people, it is people, it is people’.” ¢

Sailors share skills

The Mangawhai Rotary Learn to Sail project hosted visitors from the Auckland International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians at the club’s picnic day.

“I had a vision, three years ago, to set up a free Rotary-run children’s sailing project here on our harbour in Mangawhai, along with some very interested volunteers,” says organiser Grahame Carbery.

“To date, we’ve taught more than 80 children to sail. At our picnic day last Sunday we had a great turnout, with 15 yachts, including 10 Optimist, two

catamarans, a Starling, a Phase 2 and a Jollyboat.

“We started with a sponsored picnic lunch and BBQ before venturing out on the water. As it was St Patrick’s Day, instructor Wayne Maclennon handed out prizes of Easter Eggs to sailors wearing green.”

Ten members from the Auckland International Yachting Federation

of Rotarians sailing chapter, plus Maungaturoto Rotary members, joined the event.

“Children from 8–16 attending our current course, plus others from the last three years, certainly put on a show for us, with many taking friends or parents out for a sail. They all contributed to making the day a real success.

“We also had Lars, a Rotary Youth Exchange student from Switzerland, who is spending a year in New Zealand with sponsoring families, arrive back

The project recently received a new cup in Memory of Chloe Wright, who died last year.

“The Mangawhai Learn To Sail project currently has 20 yachts in the fleet that have been sponsored by the Wright Family Foundation and others. The Opua Cruising Club and enthusiastic local sailors have also donated yachts.

“Mayor Craig Jepson also came to join us and congratulated us for putting on a spectacle for all to enjoy.
