I don’t think you can get more community than this museum. “Emma Gray, my predecessor, has taken the museum to a really good place and my goal is to continue on from her and grow it to be self-funding as a nonprofit organisation. “My assistant manager Ana Gregg and the amazing team of volunteers are also ready to take the museum to the next level. We want to listen to the ideas the community has and go from there. “Our board has a diverse range of expertise and knowledge, which is really encouraging as well. For me, it is a new learning experience and I am excited to be thrown in the deep end. I go home every day considering what we can do next. This Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm we are having a fundraiser with the Mangawhai Singers Group at the Community Centre in Fagan Place with tickets available at the museum. “The group has donated their time and the proceeds will help with things such as operating costs and maintenance. We also have a live night coming up on August 14 from 4–6pm. “It will be exciting as the museum will come to life with our volunteers dressed in character. It is $10 per adult with children under 12 free. “We couldn’t accomplish what we do without the support of the community and volunteers. “The board are volunteers as well. It blows me away how incredibly inspiring the team and community here in Mangawhai is.” ¢

Inspiring future gymnasts

Nadine Clement began Waipū Gymnastics earlier this year to support children interested in the sport. “My daughter Eliza is a competitive gymnast, as I was at school,” says Nadine. “Growing up, my dad would take me to Whangārei every week. I now have to take Eliza to Whangārei and realised that many children in the area don’t get the opportunity to try gymnastics. “It is good for strength, flexibility, coordination and resilience, and I believe it is important in this digital age to create opportunities for children to be active. It is so easy to sit on our bottoms playing games in the afternoon. “I competed at national level and loved it. It was all about the process. Gymnastics has taught me to dream big and that the sky is the limit. “It is as much physical as it is mental. If you tell yourself you can do a backflip, you can, especially if you can do a backward roll and jump.” Waipū Gymnastics caters for preschoolers, homeschooled, primary age and older children. “We offer recreational and precompetition classes for those who want to take it further. For competition, you need to be able to do the splits and other things. Our classes give students a taste of what competing is like. “When I was a girl, gymnasts were teenagers. Now people in their late 20s

and 30s are competing. It shows it is a sport for everybody. It creates body awareness and teaches safety aspects such as learning to land properly when doing flips. “I have coaches who have competed at international level and a cheerleading professional from London. Next week, we are launching a cheerleading beginners class for a bit of fun. “Cheerleading has quite a crossover as you still have to tumble and do the splits but also learn to work in a team as it is a group performance. “Our coaches are enjoying teaching at our purpose-built gym space, and it is amazing to see how far we have come with our classes. My dream now is to get a big set of bars and a beam as well as a foam pit so children can learn to do double backflips off the bars and land in a cloud of foam. “We also join the Whangārei Academy of Gymnastics three days a week to get the more competitive experience. They have been very supportive and encouraging of us. “I also do Just like Fine Wine classes on a Friday at midday for the more mature age group. “People come and have a lot of fun together as we go around the various equipment.

It is as much physical as it is mental

All types of knitters and crocheters join us, including learners. Everyone that comes through the cafe takes an interest in what we are doing. A blanket can take around a week to crochet, and it takes me a week to make three baby cardigans. There is no pressure, and some people take a month to knit a cardigan, and that is fine. The tiny prem knitting is in four-ply pure wool as it helps to regulate the baby’s temperature. Every now and then, we get a nice card back from the hospital, and that is lovely. “For us as knitters, it is knowing that what we do is put to good use. The organisations, midwives and Plunket nurses know who need the help and are able to pass it on. “The Te Whai Bay Trust is always pleased to receive the items, and we know it is appreciated by the people, who they gift them to. We appreciate every thank you we get. The people handing out our baby items have the hard job as they see the people in need, and we are pleased we are able to help them help others.” ¢

“The group was started about five years ago with a few ladies and a little bit of wool to make blankets for charity,” says coordinator Lorraine Edlin. “We don’t get any funding at all. A couple of us knit items in pure wool, which we sell at the Mangawhai Museum to help fund the acrylic wool for other items for charity. “We make everything, including hats, booties, cardigans, jumpers and baby blankets. They are always grateful for anything we send them.” Plunket and the Whangārei Hospital premature baby unit are also receivers of knitted items. “At present, we are knitting for Zonta. They supplied us with wool to make things for their baby packs. “We meet every Friday at Jessie’s Cafe at the Mangawhai Museum from 10am and often have up to 20 people join us. Honouring dance artists

5

u by Ann van Engelen

The annual Northland Dance Awards, established to recognise and honour Northland dance artists, is set for Friday, October 1 at the Celtic Barn in Waipū. “We want to acknowledge dancers who have made outstanding achievements while raising the standards, profile and prestige of dance in Northland,” says co-organiser Whangārei Academy of Dance and Performing Arts director Holly Duder-Joy. “The Northland Dance Awards bring the wider da n c e i n d u s tr y together to celebrate achievements big and small. The awards promote the art form, raise the profile of dance and celebrate excellence. “This is the second year Krystal Williams-Tuhoro from Pulse Dance Studio in Ruakaka and I have run the event. Last year we had the Covid restrictions, so this year we plan on a much larger celebration. “We organised the event because we found there are awards for sports and other things but there was nothing celebrating dance in Northland. The awards bring dance schools, teachers and the wider community together for a fun evening.

“Students can dress up and enjoy socialising as we watch some amazing dancing. Anyone can nominate a person through the Northland Dance Awards website.” Nomination categories include outstanding dance team, lifetime achievement and best personality. “We have a large range of categories up for grabs because dance in Northland is bigger than people realise. The performing ar ts are quite separated because we don’t have a governing body. As schools we all truck along doing our thing. “It is nice to know we can come and join together rather than just seeing each other in a competitive environment. We want students to have social interaction with each other. “Krystal and I have always got on really well as teachers. We are competitive on the dance floor and are excited to bring people together in unity. Last year’s awards were such a positive and fun environment.

Students can dress up and enjoy socialising

p Students will be able to celebrate dance and performing arts together at the event on October 1

“Northland has a very high calibre of dancers. We have students from Ruakaka, Dargaville, Waipū and beyond. The majority of my senior dancers are here practising every night of the week. That is how they get the results they get. “Parents look at dance as more than just an after-school hobby, it is a lifestyle and one big family. “The Celtic Barn in Waipū is the perfect venue for us to hold the night.

They have been amazing hosts with families staying overnight in the area to make it a real getaway. “We are looking forward to seeing the amazing talent that we may not know about as we celebrate dance together. “All age groups can be entered, including schools and teachers. To nominate someone, go to northlanddanceawards.co.nz. Tickets will be on sale in the near future.” ¢

A green wonder u by Liz Clark

Whenever we think of New Zealand ferns, the first thing that comes to mind is the iconic silver fern used as a logo to represent the country overseas. Ferns date back to prehistoric times and reproduce by spores rather than flowers or suckers. New Zealand is more than abundant in fern species, with almost 200 described by botanists, ranging from ground to climbing and tree varieties. This writer is fortunate to have more than two hectares of native forest growing on the farm. I’ve spent a considerable amount of time documenting the abundance of fern species growing in every part of it. It’s a privilege and a pleasure to have. However, the home garden isn’t a large stand of native forest. That doesn’t mean native ferns can’t be grown or utilised to bring a slice of New

Zealand paradise into the home outdoor living area. Before going further, it’s important to note that ferns need consistent moisture. Drying out can cause stress on the plant and result in the browning off of the fronds and death. Soil should be rich in humus and be reasonably well drained. Most native fern species grow in shaded situations; however, they can’t survive without sunlight. Ferns do best with dappled shade rather than a dark, heavily shaded location. Another important factor to consider is humidity; ferns will thrive with the right moisture levels. During the summer months, watering is essential.

Provide deep layers of bark and leaf mulch to conserve soil moisture levels. A sheltered location is ideal rather than an exposed open site. When sourcing ferns for the garden, avoid taking them from a native forest. Obtain them from a local or specialist native fern nursery instead. In the ground fern range, there are several very attractive species available for the garden. Leptolepia novae-zelandiae or lace fern has delicately formed fronds. It makes an excellent groundcover and will clump gradually, suitable for planting in cooler shaded areas and growing to 40cm in height. The pikopiko fern is another small-growing species available from

specialist nurseries. These prefer sheltered situations and plenty of moisture. They can also be grown indoors in a pot. Pellaea falcata, or the sickle fern, has attractive sickle-shaped leaves with an upright growing habit. It prefers morning sun and a slightly damp situation. In the tree fern range, no fern is the same. Often they’re mistaken for one kind, namely the ponga. Available species at garden centres are the New Zealand silver fern, mamaku, soft tree fern, Wheki-ponga and Wheki rough tree fern. Look online for further information or contact your local nursery or specialist grower.

Creating memorable parties

7

u by Ann van Engelen

Hayley Fish and Sam Polkinghorn began Mangawhai Party Collective six months ago to fill a creative need for children’s parties. “We launched our idea last month as we were struggling to plan our own children’s birthdays,” said Hayley. “There isn’t a lot to do up here in winter to entertain children, especially when it rains. We then realised that there was a need for people to access children’s party equipment and services. “Sam and I are both primary teachers, and that goes hand in hand with the business. Having young children ourselves means we are constantly thinking of things for them to do.” Hayley and Sam offer event photography, face painting and set up slumber parties with teepees of various themes. Also available is a disco in a box and laser guns. “Our Mangawhai Party Collective website has two sections on it: one, showing our services and one our packages. “Some people collect and set up the equipment themselves. The disco theme has lights with a mirror disco ball, LED laser light kit and a smoke machine. It is great for a winter party. “We have had really good feedback, especially on the laser guns which have been hired out since we opened. They are like Nerf guns, and we have 12. You can separate the children into two groups, and they run around all day getting out their energy.

p Hayley Fish and Sam Polkinghorn delight in helping families create memorable birthday parties

“We are looking into supplying birthday cakes as well. I really enjoy the creative side, like setting up the parties and seeing the joy on the children’s faces at the end of the day. “We often see how much fun they have at a slumber party when we collect the items. “There is so much stress involved, and some parents can go crazy, while others don’t know where to start. Having our

ideas helps them. Along with the theme, we can go as far as people need. “We can help with the decor, balloons and anything else to make the event a happy memory for all involved. Our good friend, Kate, does the face painting and also the pamper theme, which a lot of girls like. Kate does nails and things as we find that girls around eight years old want to be a bit more grown-up, and this works.

“We go as far as Whangārei, Warkworth and Dargaville and surrounds. A lot of families hired the teepees during the school holidays, which made fun times for the children. “We have so many plans and are looking at what else we can source. We are loving providing families with special things to help them create special memories.” ¢

Perfecting the blend u by Ann van Engelen

Hayden and Emma Prujean moved to Mangawhai 35 years ago and are now known for their boutique coffee experience. “Hayden worked at Erwin Industrial Tools in Wellsford as the operations director making saw blades,” says Emma. “After many years, Hayden decided he would like a change of lifestyle. He spent 18 months researching what he could do and decided on coffee because we both love coffee. “We had to learn from scratch, and it took a year to set up the business. We transformed our garage into a coffee roastery and started trading in 2008. “For two years, you don’t make money, so I worked at Fonterra in Maungaturoto and then moved to Rodney District Council to supplement our income. “It was a huge learning experience when it came to choosing beans. In the beginning there is a lot of self training. Hayden had to learn the smell, taste, mouth feel and after taste. “We ordered a tasting and smelling kit from America. You have to train your nose and smell the little vials to learn

what to look for. He also had to learn how to cut the beans and he had a sample roaster to make small trial amounts. “In 2009, we won a gold and silver award in NZ Coffee Association Competitions for our Rush Espresso

It was a huge learning experience when it came to choosing beans

beans. I was at the council, and Hayden called me. He was so excited and emotional he couldn’t speak as coffee is a very competitive industry. We have gone on to win lots more awards since then. “As coffee is a field crop, the beans change. At times the crop fails, or you

can’t access the beans you want, so you need to have other beans to keep your product as consistent as possible. “At present, we use 12 different varieties so we can manage the variability and produce the same flavour or as near as every time. “We have automatic roasters, unlike places such as Thailand where they have roast coffee on the side of the road. It is quite a different taste, and they usually have one type of bean only.” The Rush Coffee Family has been active at the Mangawhai Community Market for 13 years. “We began at the market with our little table covered with coffee sacks, and when the market moved to the school, we moved to a gazebo. One of our key things is fresh coffee, so when it has been on the shelf for three weeks, we sell it at the market at a discount price, which is really popular. “We call ourselves the Rush Coffee Family as it is a family business. p Hayden, the master roaster, had to learn the coffee roasting processes from scratch when starting the business

A lot of the cafes that use our coffee now return the bags to us to reduce their waste

started with just Hayden, and then our daughter Betsy joined us and roasts, and later, her husband Aaron also became a roaster. “We are small, but we are busy. We roast about half a ton of beans a week and get about 40 sacks a month delivered on the truck. Back in the early days, we used to carry the sacks off the truck ourselves, but we now use a forklift. “Coffee is a curious commodity, and we source our beans through Trade Aid in Christchurch and a few other different importers. We like to use companies that help to ensure the farmers get a fair share of the sale. “When we get the beans, we store them until required at the roastery. They are then measured to our highly secretaward winning recipe. “They are roasted in our 12kg roaster and then packaged. “We spent three years trying to find bags that aren’t plastic. We were really

excited to find New Zealand sourced paper compostable bags recently. They are made from paper, corn starch and cellulose wood pulp. “We changed everything to go from plastic to paper. We also had to test them, as there are so many bags that say they are home compostable but aren’t. We had the same problem with takeaway cups, and Hayden became very passionate about compostable materials. “Marrying the two concepts was interesting, and we set up a composting facility on-site. “A lot of the cafes that use our coffee now return the bags to us to reduce their waste. Part of sourcing our new paper bags is we actually print them ourselves now, which cuts back on the waste with stickers. “We have 30 cafes that we supply, mostly close by, and we also have our coffee in the airport at Rarotonga. We have a lot of mail orders around the

country with people ordering from the Rushcoffee.co.nz website. We love everything about the business, especially the fact that coffee is a pleasure and delight to so many people. It is a really nice product to work with and our customers tend to be passionate about coffee too. “It is quite an upbeat product, and something people have a good positive buzz of energy about. It is a product you can enjoy drinking and handling. We are proud of what we do, and we enjoy it. “It is a nice home-based business to have. “We enjoy going to the market as well, as it gives us face to face contact with community members and customers. We also refill bags or containers at the market too. “Our customers become friends, and you end up knowing all sorts of details, such as if they have health issues and have to go off caffeine but still want the coffee.

“It is nice to carry on our passion for protecting the environment. We have had huge support from Sustainable Rodney. Being the Rush Coffee Family, we do everything ourselves. “Betsy created our logo, and we did our radio advertisement ourselves with Mark at Heads FM. “It was lots of fun as I sing and play keyboard, and we have a little music studio here at home. “I am secretary of the market committee working with Bianca Hartley, Wendy Klink, and others on the committee. “The team is full of charisma and delightful to work with. “To date, we have won five gold medals for our Rush Espresso blend, including a gold in the Australian International Coffee Awards, five silvers and 10 bronzes. “We have had an amazing journey, and we love having a positive vibe to everything we do.” ¢

Are you looking for something insanely delicious, sweet and easy to make? Well, look no further. I’ve got the recipe for you that’s bound to be a hit. As long as whoever you give it to likes the sweetness, that is. It’s only a few ingredients and is somewhat like a hedgehog slice, just a little fancier. INGREDIENTS 1 can of condensed milk 100g butter 140g 50% dark chocolate 250g plain sweet biscuits (I used Superwine) ½ cup coconut 2 tbsp cocoa powder Icing Hokey pokey chocolate (Whittaker’s)

METHOD Line a 20 x 30 slice tin with baking paper and set aside. In a microwave-safe bowl, place butter, condensed milk and dark chocolate. Heat in short increments until melted, mix until smooth and combined. Crush biscuits, then add to melted chocolate mixture with cocoa powder and coconut, mix well together. Then press into a slice tin. Pressing down firmly. Melt hokey pokey chocolate, and spread over base. Pop into the fridge until set. This is best stored in the fridge once cut into squares.

Entering a new era

Scott and Caron King have taken ownership of Mangawhai Books and Gifts with the vision to continue former owner Carolyn Scott’s reputation of providing quality service and products. “Carolyn has retired and will no doubt be playing golf. The shop was her baby for 16 years, and she was super devoted to it,” says Scott. “She is excited and nervous at the short time to retire. Caron and I are also excited and terrified to be filling her boots. Carolyn is a very hard act to follow. She knew everything about the business and the customers. “There is a real, local community vibe going on, and it was lovely to see so many people come in to say goodbye to her. “She has looked after people really well, and they knew what to expect from her high standards and customer service. Our goal is to meet that same standard.” Mangawhai Books and Gifts has Post Shop services, magazines, books, gifts and stationery. “We have a wide range of greeting cards and source many locally made gifts including ornaments, honey, wall hangings, incense, candles and clothing.

“We are like an old-fashioned bookstore with toys, board games and jigsaws. Most of the staff have remained the same, and we are loving getting to know the Mangawhai community. “For the last 15 years, I have been involved in arcade games. Previously I had managed stationery stores and a magazine shop. I decided it was time for a change from arcade games. “This opportunity came up by accident as I was looking for a local business in the area. I decided it didn’t hurt to ask and the more we heard about the shop and the area the more we liked it. “I am a big reader of books and am excited to be going back to things I have experience in. I read anything I can get my hands on, and the idea of owning my own gift shop was super attractive. It is going back to things I have already done. “Over the next few months, we will focus on learning the business and ensuring we are doing the basics

properly. We have met some great other business people, including our neighbours at the pharmacy and the pizzeria. They are all very welcoming and encouraging of us. It is amazing how super nice people are. “Caron is looking forward to coming into the store more, and we are very

excited about being our own boss and serving the community. We want to ensure we carry on doing the same excellent job that Carolyn did. “We want customers to say yes, it is the same shop, and we are receiving the same great service we have always had.” ¢

Strengthening the community u by Ann van Engelen

The Wellsford Plus Inc is holding the inaugural community dinner at the Wellsford RSA on August 7, starting at 6pm. “We want a chance for the community to get together and get dressed up and enjoy a night of fun,” says Wellsford Plus Inc’s Tania Hamilton. “The night will be MC’d by local builder Roger Farr, there will be a twocourse meal provided by the RSA, and we will have nine raffles on offer. Bernie McGahan from PGG Wrightson will be running a live auction where we have some great items up for grabs. “Wellsford Plus Inc is the former Wellsford Business Association reigniting spark back into the community. Our aim is for businesses to join and support us in lobbying the Rodney Local Board. “We want to combine our voices and advocate together for more town upgrades and work on bringing back a sense of community together. We are also encouraging shop keepers to upgrade their shop fronts to refresh the aesthetic appeal of the town.

“The group hopes to encourage people passing through to stop and spend time and money in our town. Funds from the dinner will be distributed between maintenance on the Port Albert Hall and the Port Albert church, equipment for the St John Cadets and future Wellsford Plus Events such as the upcoming Blue September event for the Prostate Foundation. “We have the Santa Parade coming up on November 27 as well as a Christmas in the Park concert. “Wellsford Plus is working hard to get the sense of community back. The latest upgrades we have had include the Curries Bush upgrade. “Our current project is to get the Rodney Street footpath upgraded to the southern end and a pedestrian bridge connection over to the current bridge so people can walk safely from town to Centennial Park as part of the Greenways plan.

“At the end of the day, no matter how much you advocate, people need to understand the power of a clean, freshlooking township. People notice peeling paint and dirty windows. “It makes logical business sense that customers appreciate clean and you have to spend money to make money and make our shops appealing. Our

group is very proud of the town and the progress we are making. I love what is going on here and hope that other people realise that first impressions really do matter. “Everyone is welcome to the dinner. It is $50 per person with spot prizes and a door prize on the night. To book, email wellsfordplus@gmail.com.” ¢
