“We are really excited to be helping North Haven Hospice to prepare the new Hospice Shop opening at 41C Moir Street, Mangawhai, this week,” says Henk.

“I’m an engineer and have worked with Hospice for 10 years before taking a break due to other commitments. I was one of the designers of the rolling ball clock in the Whangārei viaduct and took time out for that project.

“Hospice asked me to return to help them with the Waipu shop, and I’ve been helping again ever since.”

Henk says he loves seeing the smiles on people’s faces with the work he does.

“We do all sorts of things, and you see the difference you make in people’s

“Those people still get the care and support required to have the dignity to be at home, and then there’s the aftercare of the family, which is an important part as well. We all face that door one day, and that is why we do what we do.”

Charlie says volunteering at Hospice filled a gap in his retirement.

“I wanted to do something to give back to the community,” says Charlie.

“Both my mother and my wife’s mum died in Hospice in the UK, so it was a logical choice for me. I’m also an engineer and spent most of my life in that community. While

I wanted to do something to give back to the community lives. I also look after the scrap metal department and do engineering at home.

“We do whatever we need to do to help. I think at the end of the day we’re all allowed a bit of dignity, and if you give someone that dignity back it’s a great feeling. Dying can be a very lonely situation, and we all deserve dignity.

“I encourage others to volunteer.

Anyone with a bit of knowledge or spare time is welcome. There’s always room for people with a kind heart. We’re really excited about the Mangawhai shop opposite Carters.

“Hospice gets a limited amount of government and health sector funding, and that’s not enough. When people donate goods, it helps to fund things like staffing, medical supplies, and patient

volunteering for Hospice, I’ve met a wide variety of interesting people from different backgrounds.

“It adds structure to my life, too, because I know that every Thursday, I go to help Hospice. I also take broken things home to restore rather than have them thrown out.

Charlie is also a biographer and documents people’s life stories.

“I meet people who are terminal and record the parts of their life story that they want remembered. It’s very satisfying helping them write what they want people to know about them.

“Helping keeps us busy, and we make a lot of friends while caring for others. That’s why we do all we can for Hospice.” ¢

It’s that time of the year again when St John provides the opportunity for people to purchase their Christmas trees from various places in the area.

“This year, we are selling Christmas trees in stores or at some of our stations from December 1,” says Mangawhai St John’s John Prescott.

“I worked in my own business for more than 30 years and am semiretired. I joined St John as a way to help the community and make good use of my time. I love working here. We have a great bunch of people who are very supportive and social.

“We will be selling our trees at the Mangawhai Ambulance station at 194 Molesworth Drive, from December 1. It is a way that St John can raise money for things like our social clubs to support staff.

“There will also be some really cool festoon lights for sale. They are wellmade and allow you to plug multiple connections together to create one long string. We have a new, improved tree stand available as well.

“The year has been busy for the emergency services, and we continue to encourage people to volunteer to help us in various aspects at our station. To make enquiries, people can call or pop in and see us at the ambulance station at 194 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai.

“When you volunteer, you are given full medical training and any other training that may be needed to do things such as answer phones or go with the

truck while responding to calls. We have people coming from New Lynn, Kaiwaka, Waipu and beyond to help out. Usually, a shift is six or 12 hours, but we ask that people dedicate an amount of time per month to the station however that may look.

“We have our own gym and we look after each other in times of need in our personal lives. St John Mangawhai is like one big happy family.”

“We have a lovely Christmas cake to raffle off,” says manager Diane Wright.

“The tickets are $2 each or three for $5 and are available in-store on State Highway 1, next to Spice Lounge Indian restaurant. St John stores have sold 1.7 million items nationwide this year, giving those items a second life. The annual Parafed Family Picnic Challenge promises to be a fun day out for family and friends from near and far on Saturday, December 9, at the Marsden Cove Marina.

“Parafed is an organisation that creates inclusive opportunities for people living with disabilities in the community,” says organiser Pele Phillips.

“My colleague Anna Hewitt and I love being able to offer events for our community. The challenge follows the footpath around Marsden Cove Marina.

“We chose Marsden Cove because it’s an untapped area, and we want to bring the community to an area that is a bit untouched as a family day out. Many people hadn’t been here before last year’s inaugural event. It was amazing.

“It’s a very accessible area for people with wheelchairs or power chair users, and it has great access for disability vehicles, too. There will be 10 game stations set up across a three-kilometre path hosted by different businesses and organisations.”

Participating families end up at the marina and then claim their picnic hampers at the Four Square.

“The hamper has a picnic blanket and food to enjoy together at the end.

Each station is run by local businesses, including Ray White Bream Bay, Keith Andrews, Hoppers Marsden Cove Marina and Marsden Maritime Holdings.

“Other sponsors include Waipu Hammer Hardware, Marsden Motors, Fastsignz, Trigg Construction, Ruakaka Fire Brigade, Coastguard, Ollie Tuck, Kiwi Span, Lions and Laser Electrical.

“Hammer Hardware are doing a digger event, with sand troughs they have hidden things in, and there is a collect it game. Families are given a letter after each activity, and at the end, they need to work out the word to claim their hamper.

“We love that the activities can be done by three-year-olds up to teenagers, involving the whole family, not one particular age group. Last year, the feedback was incredible. People in the disability community enjoyed that they could do something together and not have someone sit on the sidelines and wait because of their disability.

“It’s an inclusive, fun family event where the whole family can enjoy a day out together. We want as many families as possible to come and have a go.

It’s such a good family event to be a part of.

“We ask families to sign up beforehand if they are able. Registrations are available on the day, but we have

a maximum of 50 family entrants. It’s open to all families and costs $20 per family team, with a maximum of two adults and four children, who must be within the same household.

Daring vessel preservation volunteer Bert Sainsbury says he has always had an interest in wood and began making wooden toys before he would crawl.

“I played with apple boxes made from wood, and, to me, that was a valuable thing,” says Bert.

“As a child, I lived near some unfortunate families who had no toys.

When I got a box, I would make toys out of them. Instead of playing with them, I would tell my mum I was going to give it to a family down the road.”

Bert made all manner of toys, including trucks and trains.

“The only thing I couldn’t work out was how to make a lime spreader that worked. I broke three of my mum’s eggbeaters trying to get the cogs out for my projects.

“When I finished one toy, something else would come along. When I left

school, I did a joiner and cabinet maker apprenticeship and worked for different builders. Eventually, I went out on my own with my dad, built many houses, and did alterations in Tomarata before moving to Mangawhai.

“There were only two builders here then. We did some very interesting builds, including the school gymnasium, which Jim Wintle supplied the timber for.

Then, I built the Fagan Place hall and requested the local old people come and help in any capacity, including painting.

It was a great community project, and it was fabulous.

“When I retired, Jim Wintle called and asked me to donate eight weeks of labour to build the Mangawhai

Museum, and I stayed three years. That grew into the historic village, and then, the Daring vessel restoration began, and I am still here with other blokes volunteering.”

Bert has decided to sell the excess toys he had at home to raise funds for the Daring.

“I used to make my toys on the weekends and sell them, but Covid squashed that. When I made toys, I would make 10 at a time. Some take me weeks to make.

“I love seeing the kids’ faces when they see the toys. Sometimes, if I saw an unfortunate child who liked a toy, but couldn’t afford it, I would give it to the mum because we’re so lucky that we

can get up and walk around, and some children can’t.

“I decided to sell all the toys that I have left and put the funds towards the Daring. Toys can be bought at the Daring, next to the museum, when we’re there. Seeing the children grin from ear to ear makes my day.

“I love working on the boat — she is beautiful and in great shape. It’s important to preserve her because if we don’t do something with it now, our kids and grandkids will never know what it’s like to have a boat built here in Mangawhai.

“To me, she is a beautiful vessel.

Working with the rest of the team to save her for future generations is a delight.” ¢

Beloved by many cottage gardeners as a herbaceous border plant, the delicate phlox can be an asset to any setting.

Flowering during the summer months, this plant ranges in height from a few centimetres to two metres and can be grown as annuals or perennials. Plant breeders have developed a range of spectacular cultivars that have made phlox a more viable option for smaller gardens.

Colours range from shades of blue, purple, pink, magenta, red and white blooms. The flowers are also fragrant and provide an excellent source of nectar for pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies.

Hardy and easy to grow, these perennials have strong stems that don’t require staking and will last for years in the garden. They are relatively pest-free other than snails and spider mites, which may require appropriate control to keep the plants healthy. Low-growing varieties can be combined with grasses or other plants for a more contemporary look, or planted in decorative containers for the courtyard or smaller urban garden.

Phlox also make excellent cut flowers for interior décor. For border varieties, choose a warm, well-lit site exposed to

full sun to provide the plants with the best possible growing conditions.

Phlox thrives well in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. If that is a challenge, build up a raised bed with plenty of compost, sheep pellets and good-quality topsoil mixed throughout with a garden fork. Plant taller varieties at the back and shorter ones layering down towards the front in spring or autumn. Phlox is drought-sensitive and will require regular watering during the summer months. Apply a light layer of mulch, approximately five centimetres deep,

to help conserve moisture. Phlox will eventually form large clumps in the garden. These should be divided every four years and planted out or potted up to give to friends and family.

Flowers, if deadheaded after they’re spent, will encourage new ones to form and prolong blooming.

In autumn, cut the foliage back to ground level after it has completely died back. Plants can be propagated by splitting the clumps and replanted in the garden at 60cm apart for summer flowering. ¢

Sandra Brunt and Laureen Medcalfe are preparing for the second annual Mangawhai Flower Show, to be held on Tuesday, December 5, at the Mangawhai Library Hall, 45 Moir Street, Mangawhai.

“The flower show was originally started by the local Women’s Institute but it had stopped and Sandra and I decided to bring it back to life,” says Laureen.

“It’s a lovely community event.

Laureen says last year was amazing, and a very well-patronised event.

“

“I come from a gardening family and love seeing other people’s vegetables, flowers, decorative arrangements and wildflowers. The wildflower entries can be flowers picked from your paddock.

There are some lovely wildflowers, and it means everyone has a chance to be creative and join in the day. People with cut flowers can use our vases.

“We keep it at the village hall because it is a beautiful building. We have programmes available at places like the book shop and Four Square.

To me, flowers are soul food. They’re beautiful and make you feel good

“Sandra and I have known each other from our children’s kindy days, and we are still good friends. We met at Mainly Music with our daughters, and then we had our sons within a week of each other some 20 years ago.

“We were blown away by last year’s entries and hardly had any spare vases left from the amount of flowers. Sandra is a brilliant organiser and ties the nuts and bolts together and makes it all flow. I like to make it all pretty, so between us, we get it sorted, but she’s the grounding one.

”

“To me, flowers are soul food. They’re beautiful and make you feel good. When you walk into the hall after it’s opened on the day, the smell of roses is amazing.

“Our sponsors, Faraway Garden, Egmont Seeds and Bunnings, are back again this year, as is our whole crew, including the judges. The show is open to any age. Last year, we had a few young kids right up to people who were in the original gardening clubs from the Women’s Institute days.

As December 25 draws ever closer, and some gifts have already been purchased (hopefully) for loved ones, consider adding a personal touch by making a homemade card.

Sometimes, the small thoughts count, and the receiver is more likely to keep a crafted card that a family member or friend has made for them.

Creators can incorporate various items into the card.

It can be a cost-effective way of capturing the various recipients’ personalities on paper.

Textile lovers could use buttons as a decoration or embroider a small patch of material to use on the card front. Painters could enjoy drawing some festive artistry for the seasonal greetings. For something more spectacular, creatives could try their hand at a pop-up card. This idea is fun for children so they can learn how movement works.

Phil Paikea moved to Ruakākā with his wife Rowena and family some 38 years ago, and now manages the Safe Man Safe Family initiative as he advocates for men to turn their lives around to the positive.

“I worked on the ‘It’s not OK’ campaign for eight years with Vic Tamati, who was the face of the campaign,” says Phil.

“When the contract ended, Vic and I set up a programme for men. We called it Safe Man Safe Family. Our saying is, ‘If the man is safe, our family is safe. If our family is safe, our community is safe.

If our community is safe, our society is safe, and if our society is safe, our nation is safe’.

“

“After all that, I still loved him but said I’d never treat my son like I was treated. I became a gang member and, unfortunately, because I was a victim of abuse, I became a perpetrator of family violence. I met my wife Rowena when she was 17 years old. She helped me

but I had given up on it. Rowena and I learned a lot in the church space, and I gave everything negative up and turned my life inside out, upside down and right side up.

“I found out early that I had to communicate because women like talking. I also noticed when they have problems, they start things like knitting clubs and Women’s Refuge, but men don’t have that.

“I was born in a little place in Helensville and have Irish and Māori roots. My grandfather was a full-blooded Irishman, so I got the best of both worlds.

I’m comfortable in my Irishness and in my Māoriness — that’s what makes us unique.

“When I was young, the pubs closed at 6pm, and dads knocked off work at 5pm, and a lot of alcohol was consumed.

“We moved to Ruakākā 35 years ago and have five daughters and a son. When we moved here, I made major changes to my life. Rowena met with a pastor, and he took her to hear some former gang members speak in Whangārei, and I followed a year later. My mother used to take us to church when we were young,

“Working on the It’s Not OK campaign alongside Vic was an excellent opportunity. Vic and I travelled the length and breadth of Aotearoa together.

“We met amazing people like TV presenter Mike McRoberts and rubbed shoulders with gangsters, drug addicts, alcoholics and ordinary people out on the street going about their business. We spoke in schools, universities, workplaces, prisons,

You can have all the knowledge in the world but need to know how to use it. We give the men tools, but they need to understand and apply the tools and knowledge to their lives and situations police stations, probation offices and gang pads.”

Phil now manages a men’s centre at Ruakākā and facilitates men’s groups.

“I also travel the country and speak on our mahi at Safe Man Safe Family.

We started it because we saw a need to have men’s services available.

“Our only counsellor when we got into trouble was to head to the pub and the barman counselled us. We’d go home, and the wife, kids, cat and dog got it.

“Now, having put the past in our past, where it belongs, my focus is caring for our family. Safe Man Safe Family is peer-led and professionally supported.

We make the men safe. I first went to a men’s programme in the 1990s to support a man dealing with anger.

“I told him I knew where to take him for help, but he was shy and asked if I could go in with him for the first session.

The facilitator said I couldn’t sit in the group I had to do the 20 weeks, so I did.

“My bad behaviour was challenged — I wasn’t saying sorry, I wasn’t cutting it. I never stopped going, and now I run

courses in Whangārei at the Salvation Army, and we have more than 30 men attending every Tuesday.

“For men to learn how to come to terms with their behaviour, they have to first acknowledge they have a problem, just as we had to come to terms with our behaviour and do something about it. We focus on knowledge, comprehension and wisdom. We don’t overflow them with information. Knowledge is information, comprehension is understanding, and wisdom is in the application of knowledge and comprehension.

“You can have all the knowledge in the world but need to know how to use it. We give the men tools, but they need to understand and apply the tools and knowledge to their lives and situations.

“When you’re dealing with anger, that’s the tip of the iceberg. When you dig deeper, it’s bigger. A lot of men are dealing with childhood trauma. Some are dealing with sexual abuse, and that’s a big one, as men don’t talk about it.

“Once they listen and other men tell their stories, they can speak up and

unload in a group they feel safe in. That’s very liberating. We build very supportive friendships and although the course runs for 14 weeks, some have stayed on for more than 28 weeks.

“Everyone is welcome. We have active and former gang members, businessmen and everyday family men.

We see changes over time and tell them, ‘work on yourself and show change by your actions’. By and large, men are the perpetrators of family violence. We have counsellors available and refer people to Man Up, and Man Alive in Whangārei, too, because they all do great work.

“It’s been a wonderful journey, but I don’t plan on doing this for the rest of my life. I’m currently training others to take the batten and take our work to another level. To me, it’s not a programme, it’s a lifestyle — we don’t just talk about it, we walk it.

“We have to apply everything that we’ve learned to our lives. The changes should reflect in our behaviour, including the way we hold ourselves and the way we talk to people.

“We start to see the swearing disappear, the ‘forgive me’ happening and hearing they love their wives and children. They are taking notice of their children and being active in their schools.

“The majority of the men have been in trouble, and some will take a while before they can engage in their family, but we’re helping them to prepare for that.

“I’m seeing happy families now.

We just had the Villy Day Out that my daughter and friends organised, and some of the men brought their families and had a good time, and that says it all.

“I now belong to a church without walls. This is our front-line ministry, we’re reaching the unreachable, we’re on the battlefield, and are seeing these men become leaders.

“We walk amongst them, break bread together and have celebration days with the men as well. If we don’t celebrate the successes of our tāne, we aren’t recognising positive behaviour.”
