COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS NEWS YOU CAN TRUST

Children’s creative space

Kirsty Halliday of Kirsty Joy Creative is taking the opportunity for children to explore with the camera during her upcoming school holidays programme.

“In today’s digital age, photography is a valuable skill that can help children express themselves and see the world in a new light,” says Kirsty.

“Our programme aims to introduce kids from 8 to 16 years old to the basics of photography in a fun and engaging way, teaching them how to use a camera, compose a shot and understand lighting.”

The programme costs $150 per child, with one of the highlights being the hands-on experience of using a camera.

access to one to use for the course. The three-day course consists of two-hour daily sessions and is perfect for any child who is eager to learn the art of photography from start to finish. It will expand their skills, ignite their creativity, and leave them with a stunning piece of photographic art.

“We’ll teach them how to use a camera effectively and the fundamentals of using a camera in a studio environment, including understanding camera settings, exposure, composition and natural lighting techniques.

“Kids that come along will have the chance to go on a photo walk with us, where they can practise their new skills and capture the world around them. They’ll also work on a photography project that will allow them to showcase their creativity and unique perspective.

“They will put their knowledge into action with guided practical sessions in the studio, capturing portraits and still lifes to hone their skills.

“It is so nice to watch their creativity blossom through learning photography”

“Participating in a photography programme like this can have a positive impact on a child’s development. It encourages them to observe their surroundings more closely, boosts their confidence, and nurtures their creativity.

“It also teaches them to appreciate the beauty in everyday life and see things from different perspectives. It is a great opportunity to give the children in your life a creative outlet this school holiday.

“It is so nice to watch their creativity blossom through learning photography skills at a young age and I am thrilled to have Sony NZ supply me with the cameras for the children who don’t have

“We’ll also explore the surrounding area putting their new skills to the test in a real-world setting with personalised guidance as they capture images outdoors, focussing on composition, lighting and storytelling through photography.

“Budding photographers will also learn how to import, organise, and edit their images using Adobe Lightroom, with a focus on enhancing your chosen photo for printing. They will then print their chosen photo and mount it on A4 art paper.”

Service with a smile

Waipu Volunteer Firefighter and local Harcourts Waipu real estate agent Lyndie Mullins recently passed the qualified firefighters course at the national training centre in Rotorua.

“Around nine years ago I wanted to help my community and a friend who was already a firefighter encouraged me to join the brigade,” says Lyndie.

“It took a year for me to go to a training night, and after the first visit, I loved it and never looked back. When you join the brigade you have to attend a sevenday recruits course and then it’s up to you if you progress.”

Lyndie says the brigade is a team and there are many ranks you can achieve within the service.

“A year ago I decided to consider the Qualified Firefighter course. You do a live fire, the hazmat, which is hazards and chemicals, search and rescue, and confined spaces. Confined

space is where you figure out if you get claustrophobic. We also did a lot of breathing apparatus work.

“Upskilling myself by doing the course was important to me because I live and work close to the brigade and respond to most of the calls we get at Waipu. Of callouts, I usually get on the first truck.

“Being a firefighter works well with my real estate work and to me the jobs are similar as I help and care for people in different circumstances. With real estate, I work with people regarding one of the biggest assets in their life.

“For instance, at present, I have a very special waterfront property at 615 Cove Road, Waipu. Being on the water, it has been built to a very high standard

and it’s such a special place to live. For the vendor, it can be emotional because they will be leaving behind some of life’s memories. For purchasers, I try to find their dream homes and connect them to the community.

“Real estate is as much an honour as firefighting, because no matter what, we need to help people. It’s an honour to turn up and help to make others feel safe when possible.

“Most of us at the brigade join to help others in our community. Our

training nights are on Thursday nights at the fire station, 23 Nova Scotia Drive, Waipu, from 7.30pm. We would love new recruits to come along and join us. Anyone interested can call our chief Alan Vaile on 021 409 442.

“All volunteer fire brigades in Northland need more volunteers to join the teams. We become like a family as we get together and do what we need to for the best outcome for the situations we attend. It really is an honour to serve our communities.” ¢

Adding value and wellbeing to outdoor spaces

With more than 20 years experience in the gardening industry, Erin at EF Landscapes is a passionate expert in landscape and garden design.

“I love working with homeowners to create beautiful outdoor areas that enhance people’s lifestyle,” says Erin.

“Well-designed gardens create opportunities for entertaining, relaxation, growing food and enhancing wellbeing. Living in Northland offers a wonderful lifestyle with beaches, open spaces and great communities. People’s homes are often their biggest asset, and I consider

it a privilege to work with them to create unique spaces that are functional, sustainable and aesthetically aligned with their home and personal taste.”

A site consultation is the starting point for people who want a gorgeous garden that is easy to look after.

Following on from the consult, a landscape concept plan will give clarity, vision and direction, for all work involved in the garden transformation. EF Landscapes specialises in planning gardens with a focus on retention and selection of appropriate materials and plants.

“I’m committed to an environmentally conscious practice and do this by utilising local, renewable and recycled materials where possible.

“With a network of supporting professionals such as landscape contractors, arborists, plant nurseries, and outdoor furniture and pot suppliers. Clients using EF Landscapes have access to a community of proven experts and products.”

Erin says now is the best time to plant for the upcoming season.

Bowlers support charity

The Mangawhai Bowling Club held its annual charity tournament recently with the funds raised going to the much-loved local charity Heart Place Hospital.

“Heart Place Hospital is an innovative undertaking by Jacqui O’Connor,” says committee member Jill Aitchison.

“It was a really good day with 48 bowlers filling up a whole bowling green. The atmosphere was lovely, with some very competitive people in the mix. We provided afternoon tea and the prizes alongside the New World Mangawhai donation.

“We play Housie every Friday from noon to 2.30pm as well and will be donating $1,500 to Heart Place Hospital from the two events. It was lovely having Jacqui join us. She has a wonderful story and is amazing with what she does.

“Heart Place Hospital is dedicated to supporting front-line carers in the health and education sectors. People such as nurses, doctors, midwives, emergency services and the teaching fraternity are supported in many different ways.”

The hospital’s aim is to support and uplift caregivers and create a network of compassion.

“We are also very grateful to Scott Henderson of New World Mangawhai for his generous sponsorship in both his donation to the charity and providing the winners’ prizes.

“John Pullan, John Tarrant and Bob Graham from Paeroa came in at first place, with Ken McLeod, Keith Lineham and Grant Moffitt from Mangawhai placing second, and Sue Belin, Marie Reid and Denise West also from

Mangawhai coming in third place. We couldn’t make these tournaments the success they are without the help of those who help run the events. Their work certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Jacqui says she is extremely grateful for the support she receives from the community

“Heart Place Hospital is very grateful for the continued support of the Mangawhai community,” she says.

“We’re delighted to be the registered charity supported by the tournament. By partnering with us, our sponsors are not just providing support. They’re making a significant and long-lasting difference in the lives of those who tirelessly care for others.

“This type of care has a ripple effect that extends far and wide and touches all our families. It doesn’t just touch the lives of our dedicated health and education professionals — it also positively influences our families, our children and even ourselves.

“Heart Place Hospital’s biggest fundraiser so far will be at the Mangawhai Golf Club on June 9, and has some small sponsorship packages available. For more information, go to heartplacehospital.org.nz or follow them on Facebook.” ¢

Something to be glad about

Gardening has always been an interest and I must admit from a gender point of view it has been very satisfying watching beans, tomatoes and parsley growing in the garden.

But we blokes do have an appreciation for finer things and mine was learnt from my mother who had a favourite flower and passed her preference along to me as I was growing up. Thus, a corner of my outdoors has usually had one or two displays of gladiolus palustris; that’s gladioli or just plain old glads in family lore.

These are dramatic and beautiful plants, perennials that can actually reach two metres in height with the right rich nourishment. In my experience, these striking flowers have been grown in a sheltered sunny spot but I have also had success with potted versions in the past, particularly in a high-rise city apartment with a window box. It is no problem at all to simply place your chosen bulbs in a large pot or similar and again choose a sunny aspect.

It might be best though to choose a variety less ambitious than the aforementioned two-metre aspirant and select a smaller shorter variety with advice from your local plant nursery. Anything taller will need a stake for support, and that is also true of the larger varieties in a garden setting where wind may be a consideration. A good rule too is to make sure a potted glad has drainage to avoid a buildup of moisture and ‘wet feet’ that will have an ill effect on the plant. An inch or so of light gravel underfoot is an idea.

Sufficient quality potting mix above and below your bulb should set you on your way to a burst of vibrant colour. Plant bulbs from 8 to 15 centimetres down and if you are planning a bigger display with multiples then a good 10 centimetres apart is a good guide. These can be staggered in planting time as well, to give a rotating display.

For my pleasure, I leave the plants to make their display in situ, although some might decide to cut them for vase display indoors. But au naturale is fine with me. When time passes and like all things in nature, life fades from your display, it is time to empty the pot, but don’t throw away the ‘baby’ with the bathwater. Save the bulbs and store them somewhere cool and dry and they’ll be ready to bring colour back to life next time it takes your fancy. ¢

A classic delight

The Mainstream Mangawhai Easter Hop saw hundreds of classic cars, bikes, hot rods and trucks on display at the Mangawhai Domain on Easter Sunday raising funds for the Mangawhai Domain Society and Mangawhai Surf Life Saving Club.

“Everyone that came ensured the day was a success,” says organiser Bryan May.

“We had a good cross section of vehicles and entertainment and we’re thankful to all of our sponsors, the Mangawhai Domain Society and Mangawhai Surf Club for helping us. Without them it wouldn’t happen.

“Sponsors Greg and Diane Haliday of Mainstream New Zealand Ltd are amazing. As a 100 per cent New Zealand owned company, they help sports teams and communities in a variety of ways. It’s great to see them in action.

“Other sponsors included Vehicle Chip Protection Ltd with their car wraps and stone chip protection and the Finesse

Group who supply kitchen and office fit outs and project management from the Far North to Dunedin. They own Waterboy Ice as well.

“Fraser of FD Smith Contracting came again and parked his fabulous Kenworth truck on site along with Maycon Homes, who have tremendous input into the success of the day. We had Pipe Image Ltd with their CCTV drainage inspection and Tara Iti came for the third year supporting the community.

“Having nice weather certainly made it a fantastic day for everyone to enjoy. The live entertainment, food, market stalls and pin-up girls all added to the atmosphere and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.” ¢

Comedy comes to

Northland Rural Support Trust is again presenting an evening of comedy with actors Emma Newborn and Amelia Dunbar’s The Bitches Box — Episode 4 at the Port Albert Hall on Wednesday, April 10.

The Bitches’ Box’s fourth live show sees Emma and Amelia revisiting some of their most loved dog characters as they take their show to communities who want to continue engaging with connections.

“We’re very much a city meets country mix and have been performing our set of The Bitches’ Box comedies where we play farm dog characters together for 11 years now,” says Emma.

This latest offering once again delivers the hilarious, fast-paced, multi-character comedy that has become world-famous in rural New Zealand. The duo continues to bring laughter to people in areas that have ongoing effects from last year’s weather events.

“The Bitches Box is set on a high country station on a day when the sheep are being mustered off the back blocks — the usual chaos ensues.

“We visit various destinations on our annual tour of the country, bringing laughter to our audiences with the hilariously imaginative world that throws the spotlight on our four-legged friends.

“There’s much to be said for having a night out and taking your mind off things while getting together with friends and seeing something fun, silly and a bit less serious.

“We believe it’s necessary to have some light relief from everyday life. The show is to encourage farmers to get off-farm and meet with the community, and a comedy show gives them a good excuse.

“We bounce from one character to another, revealing the glorious inner workings of a dog’s mind. After getting calls asking for earthquake, drought and cyclone relief shows, we realised the real need for comedy in people’s lives.

“All of our characters are dogs. There are no humans, and it’s a lot of fun and very silly. Our working dogs are crowd favourites with the farmers. The guys like it as much as the girls.

“We absolutely love what we do and look forward to meeting urban and rural folk at the events because laughter is the best medicine, and community is vital at times like this.

“Start rounding up your mates, neighbours or team as you don’t want to miss out on a great night of laughs and fun.”

The Bitches’ Box Comedy Show — Episode 4 begins with a BBQ at 6.30pm, with the show starting at 7.30pm at the Port Albert Hall, Port Albert, on Wednesday, April 10.

The show will also be at 10 Church Road, Matakohe, on Thursday, April 11 from 6.30pm and at 90 Hunter Rd, Parakao, on Friday, April 12, from 6.30pm. Tickets can be purchased for $15 each from trybooking.co.nz and includes a BBQ dinner. It is a BYO and the show contains adult themes. ¢

Mangawhai

Females unite for fun

After seeing a need for group activities for women, Mangawhai Ladies Social Club founder Jade MacKinnon reached out on Facebook to connect local women to socialise.

“Mangawhai is in my roots. I grew up here as a young child, and my parents and grandparents are locals. I spent my teenage years until my early 30s in the city and came back about a month ago,” said Jade.

“It is homely, and it feels like you are on holiday. It is a great place for mindfulness and relaxation, and I want to create a balance by helping to introduce some new and exciting social activities.

“There weren’t many social activities, and many of the ladies I spoke to desired a social group. I put together a Facebook group to create a better feel and connection for the women’s community in Mangawhai.”

Jade says in the first week, 150 women connected to the Facebook group and as of March 20, more than 300 local ladies were actively involved online.

“I am an introverted person, and the group got me out of my comfort zone. In my day-to-day job, I deal with hundreds of women online, but I don’t get out much. Many of the ladies are similar to me. They either work from home or don’t socialise often, so connecting with them is great.

“Most of them had been looking for something like this group for a long time. We have all taken a leap of confidence and courage to meet each other and are starting to know each other more and more. We are forming an amazing bond.

“We can support each other’s small local businesses, make genuine friends and connections, and are lucky to work with the local businesses, which have provided us with some specials. We were

also contacted by the local Aotearoa Surf School, which offered us a free surf lesson.”

Women range in age from their early 20s to retirement age and there are various activities like walking or social events for them to engage in. So far, there are weekly walks on Tuesday at lunchtime and Friday mornings and two dinner and drinks events once a month at local eateries and bars.

“There is something for everybody from

walks to refreshments to surf lessons. We are very open to any Mangawhaibased women from all walks of life, race and age.

“We are looking at putting on a oncea-month coastal beach walk at either Waipu or Mangawhai. We welcome any ladies who want to join us and for suggestions of possible events. We need everyone’s support to help grow this community and are excited to see where this takes us.” ¢

Every step counts

For Kendall Brown, creating opportunities for people of all ages to join together and walk on a regular basis is not just a joy, but a community service.

“I grew up in Auckland at Waiake Beach, between Browns Bay and Torbay in Auckland and attended Torbay Primary School, Northcross Intermediate and Long Bay College,” says Kendall.

“My dad was a butcher and owned two butcher shops. My mother owned a hairdressing salon in Browns Bay and after college, I completed a hairdressing apprenticeship with her. I really enjoyed cutting hair. When I married we opened the first English sweets shop in Parnell and I worked there. We sold it just prior to the stock market crash and I became an underwriter and salesperson for AMI insurance.

Kendall became a tennis coach with New Zealand Tennis and was heavily involved at the Torbay Tennis Club.

“In the 80s I enjoyed cutting and perming men’s hair and my dad suggested I become a barber. I did some research and did a threemonth course with a company called Mr Barber.

“We’ve had the bach for 20 years. My children and grandchildren were already in the area so it made sense to get away from the city and be near them.

“I’ve loved working on our orchard and creating subtropical gardens. When I finished everything in the orchard I had become very unwell, had gained a lot of weight and hit rock bottom with my health.

“It’s a change of lifestyle and you become a different person compared to who you’ve been for many years”

“I had my first child Jonathan and then my daughter Hayley and was a stay-at-home mum and often went to aerobics and loved exercising. As a teenager, I loved sports and played representative tennis and badminton. I really enjoyed travelling around New Zealand for competitions.”

“The owners, Jacqui and Neville, then offered me a job in one of their shops and six years later I became a tutor at the Mr Barber Training Centre in Auckland city for 20 years.

“The people who did the course are very creative people, with some coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The course gave them a skill to get off the benefit and I was passionate about that. It was amazing to see their personal growth.”

Kendall had a shoulder injury and in 2022 decided to retire to her bach in Mangawhai.

“I was often on steroids and antibiotics and couldn’t breathe well either. One day I realised I needed to help myself and do something about my situation.”

Kendall decided to exercise by walking with others but none of her friends wanted to join her.

“I put an ad on the community Facebook page asking for walkers and received more than 120 replies. My first walking group was on July 5 last year.

“We started on a Wednesday and added Monday and then Thursday nights and some Sundays when I am in

Mangawhai. I call the group Mangawhai Walkers and Talkers.

“Due to daylight saving going back, we’re making Thursday nights a ‘talkers, tucker and tipple night’ until daylight saving returns because we don’t want to walk in the dark. We‘ll get together for a drink, dinner and chat at various venues.

“We have walkers travelling from Whangārei, Kaiwaka, Herne Bay, Maungatūroto, Waipu, Langs Beach and Wellsford. They join us because they want to walk and love it here. There aren’t many walking groups around and our group has fun.

“Making everyone welcome is a really important part of it. There’s no judgement and I organise options for walkers of various fitness levels.

“One option is the Te Ārai cliff top walk, which takes a reasonable amount of fitness, and others walk along the gorge of Te Ārai beach with some people doing the flat estuary walk by the domain.

“There’s a lot of organising but it’s so worth seeing the smiles on people’s faces. To me it’s my community service

and many of the walkers completed a 3 Steps for Life course with St John recently.

Eighteen Mangawhai Walkers and Talkers attended the first St John course.

“I suggested the course because most of us are over 50 years old and we never know what could happen. We were taught about dehydration and CPR too.

“We’re organising another in the near future because we’re not young and people can have medical events. It’s important to know what to do if someone has things like a fall, stroke or heart issues.

“The group has a trip planned for the Rainbow Falls walk in Kerikeri which is 8.8km in length. It’s beautiful and well worth the effort. We also have 20 people going to the Fleetwood Mac experience at the Mangawhai Tavern with dinner on May 25.

“We can have more than 30 walkers at a time and I believe it’s important to share our time around the local coffee shops and eateries. I’ve also been asked to speak at the Zonta Club, which is exciting.

“I’m now doing everything I possibly can to get my health under control and be the best that I can. I’m also seeing a nutritionist to help with my lung health and am 27kg down from my original weight with around 15kg to go.

“Weight loss is quite a psychological thing. It’s a change of lifestyle and you become a different person compared to who you’ve been for many years. You’re changing your whole self for your body shape, including your eating habits. My diet is much better with fresh fruit and vegetables, chicken, rice and fish.

“I’m being the best I can and my nutritionist is helping me with more plantbased foods as they’re less inflammatory. Being a butcher’s daughter I like steak once a week so I have it once a week along with my walking.

“Having personal training a couple of times a week is now part of my routine. We work on things that you don’t do when you’re walking and in summer I’d like to start swimming.

“I’ve gone from a size 22 to a size 16 and am a lot healthier and happier now. It’s all from my diet change and walking.

“The walking group is wonderful and I think we now have a community within a community. To help others who can’t get out of the house I’m also starting to do mobile barbering. I can be reached on 021 0238 4426.

“It’s so different here compared to Takapuna. I think people here care for each other more, like they did years ago and people help each other.

“I love seeing people becoming fitter and cater for all abilities, including those with walking sticks and other health issues. Some who originally didn’t walk far are now able to join us on the coastal cliff. Every step counts; we have walkers up to 80 years old, which is amazing.

“People can follow the Mangawhai Walkers and Talkers Facebook page and add me as a friend for me information. I post every Saturday or Sunday for the following week’s walks.

“Everyone is welcome to come along. I absolutely love living in the beautiful community of Mangawhai. The people connections are lovely and there’s a lot of friendships being made.” ¢

An impressive mix

Approximately 30 artists have their work on display at the Mangawhai Artists Easter Art Exhibition, which runs until Wednesday, April 10.

“Exhibitions at the gallery usually showcase the work of just one, two or three artists. So it’s special to see the diversity and variety offered by so many artists within the gallery space at one time,” says Mangawhai Artists chair Belinda Vernon.

“The exhibiting artists are all members of Mangawhai Artists. We’re a membership-based organisation that’s all about supporting our artists and nurturing the creativity that Mangawhai is so well known for.”

will be well known to frequenters of the premises.

“We know that people often kick themselves for missing the opportunity to secure that special piece by their favourite artist. This is a good time to remedy the situation.

“The mix of works on display and for sale will be varied and diverse. There will be work for the wall by watercolour specialist Femke Koome, works in oil by Marion Stutz and Steve Guthrie and a variety of acrylic,

“Many of the artists have hosted their own exhibitions in the gallery over recent years and will be well known to frequenters of the premises”

There are three or four opportunities each year for members to contribute work to a members’ exhibition.

“The Easter exhibition is one of those opportunities. As the gallery is staffed by a roster of the exhibiting artists, it’s an ideal time to strike up a conversation with the artist on duty and find out more about the inspiration for their work.

“It’s also the chance for art enthusiasts to find work by their favourite artists. Many of the artists have hosted their own exhibitions in the gallery over recent years and

mixed media and photography by various people.

“There is a 3D, sculpture feature and a variety of ceramic pieces — reusing or recycling materials is a theme in many works.”

Rupert Herring’s pieces are almost entirely made with salvaged timber, and Samantha Minnery has created works using recycled copper wire and recycled delaminated car windscreen glass.

“Britta Conrad weaves magic using New Zealand flax, and Tilly McLeod forms exquisite works using textile

scraps and stitches. Juliette Robb always surprises with her innovative mixed media creations and outside art is presented by Sarah C.

“This is an exciting exhibition, curated by artist, tutor and curator Elena

The exhibition is open from 10am to 3pm until Wednesday, April 10, at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery, 45 Moir Street. ¢
