DairyNZ has developed an app, called EnviroWalk, to make it easier for farmers to assess their fertiliser use, effluent, waterways, races, cropping, water use and irrigation, and create an action plan on their smartphone.

Approximately 1,500 farmers have already downloaded the free app since it was launched in July.

DairyNZ Lower North Island Catchment Engagement leader Adam Duker who led the development of the app, says farmers are always looking for ways to improve their environment and we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them.

Supporting through traceability To link consumers of its premium retail products back to the farm, Silver Fern Farms have invested in traceability to support the growth of the company’s branded products.

“We want to deliver transparency in the food chain for our consumers who are increasingly interested in knowing where their food has come from, and that their food has been produced safely, with care and in a sustainable way, says chief executive Dean Hamilton.

“The investment is across our chain of care, and in linking those elements together. Our new retail packaging that is being progressively rolled out here and overseas will have two new traceability features.”

The packaging will contain a unique, fraud-proof, QR code on every pack.

This will allow the consumer to scan the code to verify that it is 100 per cent an authentic Silver Fern Farms product.

“It will show which region in New Zealand the product came from, link the consumer to stories of our farmers in that region as well as recipes for that specific product that has been purchased,” says Mr Hamilton.

“Secondly, we have been working with New Zealand origin verification company Oritain for more than three years to develop a scientific traceability system for our products to provide proof of origin certification for our consumers.

“Through linking with Oritain our new retail packaging will be able to provide absolute confirmation to the consumer that the product is true to our ‘100 per cent made of New Zealand’ commitment.

“We are excited by these new and innovative consumer-facing traceability developments and the further trust this will build with consumers and Silver Fern Farms.”

by Ann Morgan Heather O’Neill has a vet nursing background and spent time as a zoo keeper at Auckland Zoo before moving to Waikato and discovering the breed of Damara sheep.

“I

worked at various sections of the zoo including birds, ungulates, reptiles and primates, and I really loved being amongst the animals,” says Heather.

“It was fascinating to work with the different animals and working toward conservation, breeding and animal welfare. They are well cared for and I believe being in the wild isn’t actually a very nice place, especially with poachers and trophy hunters so being in the zoo is a safer for them.

“Brett and I moved to Waikato 18 months ago. We had a bigger block in Whitford but it was always our plan to move away. We are now living our dream

on a smaller block and the grass grows much better here.” The couple have Damara sheep, three dogs, a large aviary, goats, show rabbits and guinea pigs, miniature horses and cows.

“I have a qualified outreach therapy goat which is really special. We visit the brain rehabilitation centre, retirement homes and schools.

“I have taken chickens to places — they get the elderly residents talking about the good old days. They tell you all their stories, it is amazing. Some people that are nonverbal can’t stop talking. Rabbits and guinea pigs are also great to take — it really triggers people’s memories. When people go

into homes their animals are often left behind and they miss them terribly.

Outreach therapy is run by St John and the SPCA. Volunteers visit weekly or fortnightly taking their animals to chat to people, and they also help schools with animal care programmes.

“I discovered the Damara sheep because I love the rare and old breeds.

About 20 years ago I started with Arapawa sheep and loved their history, then I swapped them for the Damara about four years ago. I believe if people don’t keep the rare breeds going they will fizzle out,” says Heather.

“Everything is being modified and altered now and these sheep are unspoiled and are one of the oldest surviving breeds.

“Damara are very goat looking and herded by the nomadic sheep herders in places like Namibia. Their different patterns and colours is how they identify their flocks.

“They are sensible and have a strong herding and mothering instinct and stay as a tight knit group. They browse like goats and clean up paddocks of rough stuff and will stand up to eat a willow tree. All the fat goes into the tails so the meat is lean and marbled.

“My sheep Johnny was my foundation ram — he’s now at The Agrodome in Rotorua to avoid inbreeding with my flock. He had big curly horns but he never used them. Whenever we walked past him he would turn his head to the side so he wouldn’t hurt you.”

Heather says they are low maintenance and fully shed their wool, and they do well with facial eczema and parasites.

“They look half sheep and half goat and have hair — not really wool. They lamb exceptionally well and have a lot of twins. I love lambing as you never know what you will get. Some have tassels on their throat and the different colours and shades are amazing.

“They are different shades of red and white, black and white or chocolate and white, and patterned. I used a black ram and got a couple of spotty brown and white ones.

“I give my sheep a pedicure, check them over, and give them a spray if they need it. They are no different to any other animal. If you keep an eye on things you can catch issues before they lead to anything more sinister. I haven’t had any trouble with things like footrot.

“They have come from a dry rocky climate but are doing well here. It is all about management, and good care and maintenance helps as well as breeding.

I have good lines and don’t breed from inferior stock.

“We don’t have trouble with worms as we cross-graze with our horses and cows and do pasture management, and we soil test and all those things. With nutrition you get what you put in and I do the mineral salt licks and all that stuff.

“The Damara NZ facebook page is brilliant for information and different topics are discussed — you never stop learning.

“There are serious breeders in New Zealand with registered flocks. They are a rare breed that need protecting.

It would be great to see more people taking them in.

“This life is a dream and these sheep are well worth saving.”

by Anna Harding When they moved to the small rural town of Raglan, Latesha Randall and Sebastian Walter had plans to live the quiet small town life. They didn’t set out to be making yoghurt and visiting coconut farms, let alone starting an international business.

“W

e came to Raglan to be hippies — we were meant to be here just to chill out, have a garden and eat organic veggies,” said Latesha.

But after realising Sebastian was dairy intolerant, they started experimenting with coconut to make yoghurt.

One day Latesha had some left over, so she advertised it on the community facebook page. The response was bigger than anticipated and people really liked it. “It went from there. Before we knew it, we were yoghurt people.”

That was at the end of 2014. Today they employ 16 staff and make 5-7,000

jars a week. Their ‘Raglan Coconut Yoghurt’ is sold in 500 places in New Zealand and they export to Sydney, Rarotonga, and Singapore.

One batch takes just over a day to make, using coconut cream from Sumatra, Indonesia. They settled on the Sumatra plantation because it’s organic, they liked the coconut’s taste and quality, and because they could supply the quantity they needed.

Sebastian recently visited the plantation. “I went for ten days and was blown away by how beautiful it is and how kind and friendly the people are. It was impressive to see how much

they know about coconuts and how they put it to use in so many different ways,” he said.

The plantation has around ten million trees and is mostly made up of small scale farmers, owning anything between 10-300 trees each.

A new tree begins by sprouting from a half buried ripe coconut. As the outer husk splits, roots shoot from the bottom into the soil and a sprout comes out top.

It can take several weeks or months to sprout and about nine years for the tree to mature and bear fruit.

They can live for a century, producing till the end. A good coconut tree will produce around 60-70 coconuts per year in the right conditions — warm weather, nutrient rich and well draining soil and plenty of water — what the plantation’s soil is naturally like.

A mature coconut tree will produce fully ripened fruit in about nine months.

The trees are harvested more often than that however, as it depends on the intended use for the coconut.

Young green coconuts have more water in them, therefore they are harvested early. The water and flesh are used to make coconut cream — basically a process where the flesh is shredded then squeezed with the water.

At the plantations factory, the coconuts are weighed and the farmers paid. The plantation has an equal gender hiring policy and takes good care of their workers, covering all their medical expenses and subsidising grocery bills.

The factory then processes and divides the coconuts into different products. The husks are turned into fuel

for fires, houses are built with coconut leaves and fibres and the inside is eaten, making coconuts a zero waste product.

“With the amount of coconut yoghurt we’re making, we’re using around 8,000 trees worth of coconuts per year. If you calculate the rate of CO2 they capture, that means we are saving nearly 2,500 tonnes of CO2 a year. Even when you factor in freighting by boat, that’s only 43 tonnes of CO2 per year. So we’re overall way CO2 positive,” said Latesha.

“We did a similar calculation with cow’s milk. If we made the same amount of yoghurt from cow’s milk we’d be about 1,000 tons negative before factoring in freight, just purely from the amount of CO2 a cow produces in a year, per litre of milk. So it does seem to be an overall environmentally better option.”

“The most fun part of a business is making people happy with your product and then trying to do good things with your platform,” said Latesha.

Every year they take on a charitable project.“This year we’ve been working with ‘Million Metres’ on tree planting.

We want to plant up to 2,000 trees this year. Our next campaign is going be getting plastic off beaches — we want to pick up one million pieces in a year,” said Latesha.

“It’s exciting doing something new and something where we have to learn all the time. Being able to run it together as a couple is cool.

“The customer feedback is probably one of the biggest drivers. People love it and that’s really encouraging. You can’t really beat that.”

Lauryn Bond is growing up on her family farm and besides enjoying all aspects of farm life, she is involved in hunting, fishing and the sport of clay bird shooting.

O

ne of the 15-year-old’s aims is to follow in the footsteps of New Zealand female clay bird shooters such as Natalie Rooney and Farm Source Ngatea and other supporters are helping her to progress toward her goal.

“I started duck shooting with my dad when I was seven years old, and learnt to milk the cows when I was eight years old,” says Lauryn.

“When I get home from school I go straight to the cowshed. I love life on the farm, and in our spare time we go hunting and fishing and I enjoy getting out there without phone reception and away from technology. We hunt deer and go duck shooting in the game bird

season.” Lauryn originally started with a 4.10 shotgun but has now upgraded to a 20 gauge and uses a 12 gauge for clay bird shooting.

“Duck season is important because so the numbers don’t get too high as they damage crops and pasture and can pollute waterways,” says Lauryn.

“During the nesting season I trap pests to help the duck population grow again and at the moment we have a pet one that I saved.

“I enjoy deer hunting, it is one way we get off the farm as a family and go camping. Keeping the deer population down is important as well and we enjoy the meat for the freezer.” Lauryn discovered clay bird shooting through a Lauryn Bond started shooting at seven years old and has won many trophies since then

Lauryn grew up on the family farm and believes there is no better lifestyle

“To be a clay bird shooter you need a good eye and a good gun. It is a mental game and you have to train yourself to take it as it comes. I have been told ‘there is never going to be a clay bird you cannot shoot so go out and shoot them all’. I enjoy the challenge and we travel a lot and have been to places I have never

been before like Christchurch for the secondary school nationals, Hamilton, and recently we competed in Dunedin.”

Every Wednesday Lauryn’s team from Hauraki Plains College travel to the Thames club to practise.

“I mentally prepare by being alone and put my earmuffs on and stop talking to people. There is no joking around — just keeping to myself and focussing. There is a time to have good fun, especially when we are travelling in the van.

you shoot and keep moving around and the clay comes from two different houses, and ‘ball trap’ is when you stand in the same lane and you go down a line, some birds go straight up in the air and some go straight down.

“A good day is when you get maybe 99/100. It is exciting if it comes to a shoot off with someone with the same score — it is an amazing feeling competing and there is lots of adrenalin.

“Coming back to the farm later is the life. I have a cell phone for health and safety reasons when we are working on the farm in case something happens but that is it really. Farming will probably be my career — I enjoy the physical side of

it as well as nature and caring for the animals. Having animals is wonderful.

All my years at primary school I had a calf club calf and one was a big beef calf and we always won trophies — I wouldn’t swap it for the world.”

Lauryn has won many medals and trophies since taking up the sport in 2015, both personally and as part of a team. Farm Source Ngatea have started a ‘Give a Little’ page to help Lauryn get to the 2018 nationals. A quick phone call from my neighbour Eru enticed me to attend a meeting at the Poututerangi Marae in Te Puna. The main speaker was Mike Scaddan a previous headmaster of Te Puna School and a strong advocate to stop the use of toxic chemical sprays throughout the Te Puna kiwifruit, avocado and citrus orchards.

At the end of World War II, large chemical conglomerates who were manufacturing and selling inhumane gases during the war, turned these toxic products towards pest and disease to continue the cash flow.

Initially, the people accepted these toxic sprays as a new way to control pest and disease, however, with the heavy overuse of these deadly sprays it didn’t take long for the pest and disease to become immune. So, we have a new problem on our hands — how do we control the pest and disease? At present, globally, we are in the midst of pest and disease and authorities don’t know how to handle it.

As a commercial grower, The Ministry of Agriculture had me on a weekly spray programme of two fungicides and three insecticides — saying prevention is better than cure. The more I sprayed the more I had to spray, so after eight years I changed my regime.

At the time I was working with a multimineral, microbial rich solid fertiliser — Rok Solid, and a multi-mineral, microbial rich liquid fertiliser — Oceans100. My belief was that with all this available

natural mineral I was feeding the plant, the plant would be able to fix its own immune system. And that’s how it happened. That saved a lot of time and money.

Plants grown as crops are susceptible to all manner of pest and disease and when pesticides are used the plants are coated in toxic sprays, whereby they cannot develop their own natural immunity; in a live, living, multi-mineral, microbial rich soil the plant has all the necessary equipment to protect itself and build immunity.

In a chemical programme the plants are weak and continually need more chemical inputs, which is what the ‘chemical — treadmill’ is all about, and worse than that, these toxic chemical sprays are going straight into the food chain.

According to Patrick Holden, CEO of Sustainable Food Trust, ‘we are locked into a cycle of ever-increasing industrial farming based on a chemical mindset and a reductionist approach, and we desperately need to break free of it. “ When we pick up a handful of live soil, it’s hard to imagine all the activity

that is happening at a microscopic scale within it and the powerful impact it has.

This web of life in a healthy soil is a magical world of interaction that science is only just beginning to understand. Dame Te Atairangikaahu scholarships Four young women passionate about the environment, studying at the University of Waikato are this year’s winners of Waikato Regional Council and Waikato-Tainui Dame Te Atairangikaahu Scholarships.

Lynley St George from Ngati Porou, Nevada Huaki-Foote — Waikato/Ngati Porou, Tekiteora Rolleston-Gabel — Ngai Tuhoe/Ngati Kahu/Ngai Te Rangi and Ngapera Keegan — Waikato/Maniapoto, received their awards at a ceremony at the university.

The four are respectively studying for Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Environmental Planning/Graduate Diploma, Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Science degrees and will receive scholarships worth between $2,000 and $2,500.

Lynley is studying a Bachelor of Science and has been involved in conservation work. She is keen to use her science knowledge to create great environmental outcomes.

“I believe that, between a strong grasp of science and a connection to one’s culture, people can interact with their environment in a more positive and effective way,” she says.

Studying a Bachelor of Environmental Planning, Nevada is aiming for a career in Maori environmental planning.

“I want to be able to apply a Maori environmental view to Aotearoa where the knowledge from my ancestors,

alongside environmental planning can be incorporated into a modern business environment.”

Tekiteora is completing a double Bachelor of Arts and BSc and has a deep appreciation of the Waikato environment and a strong desire to contribute to the community.

“I am aspiring to develop a career in scientific research with a particular focus on its correlation to matauranga Maori — traditional knowledge,” she says.

Ngapera is studying a BSc and says she wants to apply methods to improve New Zealand’s environment as a whole and protect our native flora and fauna so that New Zealand’s beauty remains.

Waikato-Tainui Te Arataura chair Rukumoana Schaafhausen said the scholarships reflect tribal aspirations to invest in the education of rangatahi — young people, care for the environment and work collaboratively with regional partners.

“We are proud to have four wahine take up the scholarship to pursue science and environmental studies.

“We will be watching their journey closely.”

Improving joint health (Part 1) The best part of what I do is to see improvements in those who have the courage to try something different.

Do it once, do it right Farmers wanting to upgrade their effluent systems once and right will get all the information they need at an expo next month.

Waikato Regional Council’s latest Effluent Expo at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton on Tuesday 17 October will provide a one-stop-shop for advice and information.

There’ll be seminars, demonstrations and industry and council experts ready to talk farmers through high-quality effluent management solutions. They can help farmers get the best out of their effluent as a resource but also to be compliant with rules designed to protect the environment.

On the compliance front, the council is aware some farmers can be worried that, despite best efforts and considerable expenditure on upgrading systems, they might be forced to do it all over again at some stage as circumstances and rules change.

The farming services team notes current rules are well-established and science-based, with future proposed rules outlined in the Proposed Plan Change 1 in the Waikato and Waipa rivers catchments. Following some basics will help farmers future proof themselves regardless.

“The principles underlying effluent management rules align with current science,” says sustainable agriculture advisor Mark Gasquoine.

“This science shows that applying effluent to pasture when soil moisture is at suitable levels has a relatively low environmental risk. Farmers can help future proof their properties by having systems that provide for a low risk approach.”

The dairy industry’s Farm Dairy Effluent Design Standard and Code of Practice has been put together to address questions that farmers generally have around future-proofing their effluent systems. It outlines the expectations for all aspects of effluent system.

“Any effluent system that is designed to code standards is going to meet regional council requirements now and is likely to meet any near-future requirements,” says Mark.

“It’s great to see so many farmers making an effort to manage effluent better but as a region we still have some way to go.”

This is borne out by the latest compliance statistics for the Waikato region based on monitoring of almost 1,200 dairy farms.

While the vast bulk of farms rated in the three higher compliance categories, 24 per cent scored only partial compliance and nine per cent significant non-

compliance. “The findings particularly reinforce the need for farmers to ensure they have adequate storage to comply 365 days a year and this will continue to be a focus for our one-on-one work with farmers,” says farm services team leader Stuart Stone.

The multi-award winning Clean Green Effluent System is still leading the way in effluent technology. This simple, but effective, fully automated distribution system has a minimal footprint as there is no need for mega ponds to be constructed.

The System starts with a patented Weeping Wall encased in a concrete lined bunker. This Weeping Wall removes the solids and allows the liquid to flow into a pump chamber. Green water is then stored for recycling. External yarding can then be automatically cleaned with green water via floodwash or backing gate nozzles, effectively cleaning yards without the use of fresh water. This reduces the water take from the standard 50 to 70lt/ cow to 20 to 25lt/cow.

Reducing water consumption has a twofold effect. Firstly reducing the cost of freshwater extraction and filtration and secondly the amount of effluent to be dispersed to land.

Clean Green‘s patented automated distribution system allows liquid to be dispersed over large areas at a super low rate of 1/4mm application depth. Effluent can be safely dispersed nearly every day of the year.

As we can disperse effluent all year round at super low application depths, there is no nitrogen leaching and the pasture retains all nutrients provided, thus increasing pasture growth by up to 35%. The solids retained in the Weeping Wall retain 100% of the organic nitrogen and a large percentage of the liquid

nitrogen. This dry matter then becomes a slow release fertiliser that is perfect for crop planting.

No mega ponds are needed due to the ¼ mm application depth and therefore minimal storage is now required. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises as little as two 30,000 litre water tanks to provide storage for greenwash and effluent dispersed. The advantage of the water tanks is they are guaranteed not to leak and have no rainwater catchment.

Rainwater catchment in mega ponds equates to doubling the amount of effluent being stored and having to be dispersed by pump. This cost effective system can be adapted to existing sheds or installed on new conversions. Consent applications are submitted by Clean Green Effluent Co to the governing bodies to ensure compliance when first installed and throughout any renewal processes in the future.

Remedial work on leaking mega ponds and non complying systems can be cost effectively remedied by replacing with a complete Clean Green Effluent System.

CROP & PASTURE PREP Harvesting needs good skills Harvest time is a crucial time in the farm calendar and in years gone by it was more often than not a call-out to the neighbours, and arranging a schedule for someone’s new tractor to meet up with another’s bailing machine.

Now technology advances have seen the cost of equipment soar as GPS systems and computers have come to the fore in economic reaping of croplands, from grains to maise, to ground crops. With this development, contractors have become the harvesters of choice.

Efficient use is vital and machinery sitting in sheds is not economic in any sense.

Pasture intake is generally affected by the quality and quantity of the available pasture offered daily and the tools of grazing management include frequency and intensity of grazing.

Pasture production and quality are mainly affected by the amount of pasture and grazing intensity.

Information from DairyNZ says pasture and herd performance are optimised by having sufficient quality feed on an annual basis to meet cow demand and by allocating this feed.

Control the area that is grazed each day to help manipulate the pasture that is eaten to meet the average cover targets for the farm. Estimate the area and pre-grazing cover required for the cows based on the target grazing residual, and adjust after observing if the cows achieve a ‘consistent, even, grazing height’. It is good to treat pasture as a crop and remove that which

Distribute pasture cover between paddocks in a feed wedge to ensure that high quality feed is offered on all paddocks. Over the season the height of post-grazing residuals does not change but the dry matter mass does increase.

This is the value of using ‘clicks’ on the Rising Plate Meter or one formula for the RPM for the season.

The decisions about grazing frequency are often a result of farmer preference due to specific farm characteristics, for example even/uneven paddock sizes,

shape of the farm, soil types, and labour availability.

The number of times fresh pasture is offered within a day does not affect dry matter intake or milk production and grazing frequency does not affect grazing time, rumination time or resting time of cows.

As growth is influenced by a range of factors. There is no research evidence that the frequency of grazing — 12 versus 24 hours — affects pasture growth.

It is much more important to maintain appropriate residuals of 1,500-1,600 kilograms DM/ha.

Do you know what hoof trimming is all about? How would you rate your own or your staff’s hoof trimming skills?

Many people may answer that question with a certain amount of selfconfidence. ‘It’s not that difficult, right?

I have seen vet’s trim cows. I have even watched professional trimmers. I think I do a pretty decent job’.

Lameness is expensive. It is in the top three animal welfare problems, and along with mastitis and fertility, is in the top three main health costs on a dairy farm. It pays to take it seriously, and unfortunately, most people underestimate the skills and know-how required for proper hoof care.

Just to put it into perspective, it takes 14 months to get a qualification in hoof care in Europe. Apparently, about 40% of trainees fail their exam after that time.

I know that is at a professional level, but farmers are professionals as well, therefore their hoof care skills should be at a standard where the speed of recovery is similar to work performed by a professional hoof trimmer. We come across many cows that have been trimmed by farmers and end up being worse off after the trim than they were before. A cow’s recovery does not necessarily reflect the quality of

the trimming — most cows will recover without any outside interference. So, when we decide to intervene it needs to be done for the sole purpose of speeding up the healing process. I think a lot of cows in New Zealand are trimmed because it makes the farmer feel better, not the cow. This may be my bluntness coming through, but I see way too many cases that support this view. In reality, this is very understandable. Most farmers have had insufficient training, and because of my experience teaching final year vet students at Massey, I can say that even most veterinarians have minimal training in this important skill.

How can you be confident that you are helping your cows if you don’t know what aspects of the trimming process are important, and why?

The grand daddy of wool producers Bruce Worsnop has spent decades combining his skill and knowledge with science so that “dagginess” is fast becoming history along with tremendous worm tolerance.

Bruce, and son Patrick, operate a Lincoln ram stud and commercial flock of 2,000 purebred Lincoln ewes in conjunction with a beef finishing operation running 1,000/1,500 bulls in Central Hawkes Bay. Their Makaroro Road property, in the lee of the Ruahine Ranges covers some 1,900 acres, is 5kms long, 3kms wide with undulating hills and flat pasture.

Elderly, native totaras dot the hilly pasture which at its summit, is 1036 feet (315 metres) gives 360 degree views of a verdant, seemingly unpopulated Central Hawke’s Bay. “We’ve been selecting our Lincoln Ram stud sires and the females we put into the stud flock for their tolerance to worms over the last 40 years.”

Primary focus is wool production, and its heritability in the flock of the purchaser.

The campaign, which Bruce describes as “a breath of fresh air” is a great opportunity for wool growers to consolidate, unite and support the project.

Go large for outdoor adventures

There’s a lot to pack into a Kiwi summer — and despite the currently inclement weather, there’s a long, hot one on the way. That means DIY projects and camping trips, towing the boat or the caravan for weekends away, hitting the beach for some angling action or possibly even taking the quad or dirt bike out for a blast.

That sounds like the perfect job for a powerful ute — one which ticks all the boxes of power and performance.

But is it possible to balance the grunt needed to really get out into nature with an emissions standard that will keep our wild spaces clean and green? The answer is a definitive ‘yes’ from Isuzu, who have enjoyed a successful year in 2017 with the introduction of the nextgeneration DMax. Now meeting strict Euro 5 emissions standards, a clever feat of engineering means that this powerful light commercial keeps it’s potent 3 litre turbo diesel under the hood, while allover revamps to fine details such as instruments and exterior styling give the DMax a refined new look.

We’ve said it before — take a closer look at the DMax’s power plant and you’ll realise that you’re dealing with a proper truck motor, not a unit lifted from a standard sedan or wagon.

To meet those cleaner emissions, Isuzu integrated a new diesel particulate diffuser system and exhaust recirculation technology into their 3.0 litre engine design, while also improving the turbocharger, pistons and fuel

injection systems. This adds up to not just a cleaner ride, but also a handy 50 newton-metres of extra torque.

That, in turn, gives the DMax serious pulling power whether for work or play.

Going from the construction site to the farm and then on to tow all those summer toys will be no problem for a machine which produces 420Nm at just 2200 rpm.

Both manual and auto gearboxes have been upgraded to six speed, helping deliver that power smoothly and with focus.

Gunning for the crown

When it comes to modern utes, many buyers entering the market feel they have a choice between two top contenders. There’s the Ford Ranger, riding high on years of awards and sales figures, and the Toyota Hilux, the once-all-powerful monarch of the rural roads, still slugging in a close second place. Now there’s a challenger so far out of left field it’s almost tempting to use a metaphor from recent Kiwi politics.

The new face of LDV has been its range of big, dependable work vans for some time now, and they’ve gained traction with tradies and fleets in a big way. Now the company is bursting into the ute market with a four-wheel drive double cab that both looks the part, and carries a very affordable price tag.

It’s called the T60, and it’s shaking up a sector already graced with new low-cost utes by Mahindra, Great Wall and Foton.

Avoid Drink Driving

NZ Young Farmers is stepping up its mental health campaign among rural youth with a series of Good Yarn workshops around New Zealand, aimed at supporting vulnerable members.

Following on from the launch of a documentary that featured stories of depression and suicide among members, the organisation will facilitate the mental health workshops in an effort to combat the increase in suicides, particularly among young rural males.

Figures released recently by chief coroner, Judge Deborah Marshall, show the 20-24 year-old age group recorded the highest number of suicide deaths at 79 for the year ended June 2017. Of that, 61 of those deaths were males.

Overall, it was the third year in a row that the number of suicides had increased.

CEO Terry Copeland said he was saddened at the statistics.

“Inevitably, the young rural male continues to feature more prominently every year in the statistics and we must do all we can to halt that incline.”

NZ Young Farmers were not immune to the statistics with a recent suicide

of a popular member highlighting the need to put resources into the mental wellbeing of rural youth, he said.

“The terminology around suicide is equally as important as the work taking place to prevent it. While it is important that there is more talk in the media around suicide, the term they often use — ‘committed suicide’ — needs to be changed. That implies it is a crime and further stigmatises the issue.

“We remain determined to eradicate that stigma and to foster a culture and network where talking about your feelings is welcomed.”

NZ Young Farmers will hold twelve Good Yarn Workshops throughout New Zealand from the middle of September until the end of November.

The wellness workshops help participants recognise and respond appropriately to friends, family, farming colleagues or customers suffering from stress or mental illness.

Mr Copeland said while the workshops were a vital step forward in dealing with mental health issues, it was also important to realise NZ Young Farmers could not carry the load alone.

“We believe collaboration within our industry is part of the process going forward and we will be reaching out to other agri-organisations that want to partner with us in relaying the message over coming months.”

At the same time the NZ Young Farmers Mental Health documentary that featured several members who had been courageous in telling their story about depression candidly, continued to be viewed by a wide audience, he said.
