Problems with Iron and Manganese?

President Dr William Rolleston says that, while the offer strengthens the business and offers potential for further growth in the Chinese market, there are some key issues for shareholders to work through ahead of the special general meeting on October 16.

“Silver Fern Farms buys and processes a considerable proportion of New Zealand’s beef and lamb, so we need it to be sustainable and successful. The proposed joint venture has the potential to create significant opportunity, but shareholders need to consider the offer in detail,” he said.

“There are a lot of factors that will ultimately determine whether this is the right deal for shareholders, and not all of them are clear from what has been announced today. Key questions include what value has been placed on Silver Fern Farms’ significant body of intellectual property and whether a strong emphasis on the Chinese market will prove restrictive if that market weakens.”

Shanghai Maling Aquarius, a unit of China’s state-owned Bright Foods, will take a 50 per cent stake in the country’s biggest meat processor, Silver Fern Farms, in a deal that will see it invest $261 million into New Zealand’s biggest meat exporter. Silver Fern’s farmer shareholders will be paid 30 cents a share as a special dividend as part of the deal, the Dunedin-based company said.

“The deal is subject to shareholder approval at the special general meeting scheduled for October 16 in Dunedin.

It is also subject to approval from New Zealand’s Overseas Investment Commission and from Chinese regulatory approvals, a process that is expected to take six to nine months,” said Silver Fern chairman Rob Hewett.

raining and touring both nationally and internationally meant James spent a significant proportion of time away from his family. With two young children, they began to think about moving out of Auckland so that their children could enjoy a rural upbringing.

“I am originally from Taranaki and spent a lot of my childhood on family farms. I really enjoyed those experiences

and felt that the only other career choice I was comfortable with besides dancing was farming,” said James.

They had heard about Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre through family members and in February enrolled in the Certificate in General Farm Skills — Level Three, a 13-week full-time programme. “We lived in Henderson and travelled an hour and a half each

way, every day, to the campus in Waiuku.

On June 1 I began a new job as a farm worker on a 300-hectare farm with 700 cows in Cambridge,” said James.

James works with four other people including the owners Peter and Vicky Risi and says studying the certificate programme gave him a good understanding of what is involved in farm work.

“My wife Tia especially appreciated learning about soil types and how to manage the land. The aim is for her to not only support me on the farm, but also to grow food for the table.

“Since arriving my responsibilities include feeding out the silage, tagging, vaccinating, moving cows around, and we are currently completing our calving and have started the milking season. I am learning more each day. The lifestyle change has been great, it’s good to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city.

There is more peace and quiet and we are more settled as a family. We do miss the ease of access to the city but here is a much better life.

“Living on the doorstep of work is great and we are trialling a new roster, with seven days on and two off.”

With it being calving season he says he will help keep the momentum going, along with the milking and daily running of the plant.

“We would like to stay on this job for at least 5-10 years and establish ourselves. The children can now run free and get dirty and explore like children should be able to.

“Actually being on the farm after the course is a big difference and has been an eye opener, but getting straight into it has been good. I have definitely gained confidence. Now I hold a position, the

James is enjoying the responsibilities and having more tasks assigned to him

responsibility has been challenging, but I am proving to myself it is something I actually want to do.

“I feel I can be a real role model for my children, and dance and drama is now something we keep in the family as an interest.

James says the course covered all the basics of farming and gave good advice

including the importance of keeping the animals as relaxed as possible at all times. The couple see their future in sharemilking and farm management.

“It seemed obvious that some of our beautiful beef should be used to make that wonderful Kiwi classic — the NZ hand-held pie, but with an artisan twist.

As for the secret to their success, “if I knew what it was I would patent it,” says Colin.

“I think it is because of our whole breeding programme. Everything is bred and born right here. We call it a provenance story. I think it is also because they lead very stress free lives.”

The animals are even transported to the meat works in twos and threes.

He says being able to see the whole process is very satisfying.

“It’s more than from pasture to plate, it is conception to consumption.”

The beef in Lake Farm pies is born and raised on Colin and Keryn’s farm near Cambridge Their pies are award winning, and recently Lake Farm Beef were placed first in the Best of British section of the 2014 NZ Beef and Lamb’s prestigious ‘Steak of Origin’ competition with their Angus entry, and took home the top prize of Grand Champion.

“Its such a prestigious competition.

We were delighted just to have made the semi finals — especially when three out of our four entries got through to the semi’s,” says Colin.

Only a small number of facilities are licensed to process beef from the many entries, and the steaks taken are tested for tenderness and then go through a series of taste tests narrowing it down to the best 20 steaks in the country.

Colin oversees the beef’s process from conception to consumption Lake Farm Beef have reached the final 20 four times in the last six years.

Although not always farmers, Colin and his wife Keryn have always had some land, and Keryn loves horses.

“We farm 75 hectares so it is quite intensive. There is a lot of farm maintenance and once a fortnight I have the very difficult job of taste testing the pies.”

Being just the two of them, it is a lot of work and Colin has to spend more

time behind a computer than he would like but he says the most important thing for him is to ensure the animals are happy.

His favourite part of the whole process is being with the animals, moving them, feeding them and wandering through them.

“Our greatest efforts are to ensure our cattle live in an idyllic, peaceful environment and have a great life in the short time they are here.”

Allen Donald from Cambridge has been an integral part in the success of the first full blooded Normande calf born in New Zealand with embryo’s he helped import from France.

“I

was a dairy farmer originally and had a lifestyle change. I moved careers and became an Ambreeds district sales manager. In 1989 they offered me the job to set up the international division and I brought the first embryos and semen out of the United States and then the United Kingdom into New Zealand.

“I started my own company, Genetic Enterprises Ltd in 1999 and we are now the biggest importers of semen and embryos in the country for cattle, horse, dog, and sheep - all livestock really.

“Simeon Gethen contacted me as he was travelling to France to find a new breed of cattle to help produce their Mahoe cheese. We put him in contact

with Helene Dubarle who is the export manager for Montbeliarde cattle over there. He spent time with her and she introduced him to a Normande cattle breeder as the milk from these cows is known for making good cheese. Once he found his choice of donor we organised the import of the embryos for him.

“We are the biggest importers of breeds and arranged the permits and port clearance. The family are the first in New Zealand to have pure embryos born — it is very exciting. We implanted the embryos into their stock and will implant the Montbeliarde embryos we imported for them this year.

“There are a lot of people looking for a way to get semen imported. We

work very closely with the Ministry of Primary Industries and Port Entry. Our knowledge makes it easier for people to import and it takes a lot of the worry out of arranging things for our clients.

Things can go very wrong with importing which can be very costly.

“I enjoy the job and helping people achieve their goals and I like having the contacts all around the world. I have travelled extensively over the years.

“Simeon has done a great job, it is very exciting and the Normande breed definitely has milk qualities which produce specialist cheese.”

There is a lot of Japanese interest regarding the breed and the cheese due to the milk quality which seems to be excellent for boutique type cheese. “We

have a herd of 80 friesian/jersey cows and implanted the embryos into some of them. That gives a full blooded calf yet the mother is still in France. That makes it even more special,” said Simeon.

“We supply milk to our Mahoe cheese factory which is next door to the milking shed. The milk from these cows gives us 15-20 per cent extra cheese for

Allen Donald started his company in 1999 and says he enjoys helping people accomplish their livestock goals the same amount of milk solids to other cows.

“In France they are using this breed to make Camembert cheese. PASTURE RENEWAL Right renewal plan makes your grass go further Imagine what your farm working expenses would look like if all your paddocks grew as much as your best ones. Every extra kg of pasture grown and utilised helps make every kg of milksolids cheaper to produce. But on most farms, the difference in pasture production between your best paddocks, and those which grow the least, is typically 100%.

This spring, the best way to uncover this potential for profit is to quantify exactly how much each of your paddocks grows.

This is one of three tips in a new booklet from Agriseeds about making your pasture go further in 2015/16.

“Done well, pasture renewal will decrease c/kgMS costs, and improve farm profitability at a payout of $3.85/ kg milksolids. So it remains a key tool in ensuring the sustainability of your farm business but done wrongly, pasture renewal is a waste of money,” advises pasture expert Graham Kerr, Agriseeds. New pastures typically grow 3–5 tonnes more DM/ha/year than old, poor producing grass, clover and weeds.

Pasture myth busted

Many farmers believe you can count on an extra 100 grams milk solids produced with each kilogram of dry matter supplement added to the system however DairyNZ senior scientist Jane Kay has set about to bust this myth once and for all.

Spring is always a busy time on the farm, with numerous tasks needed to power into the season. For many farmers, the support of a contracting firm is vital, as these professionals bring heavy machinery to the field, cutting big jobs down to size.

This is referred to as substitution and depends on how hungry the cow is. If she is very hungry there are lower grazing residuals, meaning a lower rate of substitution and a greater MS response.

Other factors affecting the MS response in pasture based systems are the seasons and the quantity of supplement fed. All these need to be remembered when calculating MS response to supplement.

to compress air — and space — out of silage pits, allowing a greater volume of feed to be stored.

Attached by a three point linkage to one of Borck Contracting’s big tractors, this silage ‘rolling pin’ works much better than previous methods to create compact, evenly preserved silage, with more in each pit or clamp.

Coupled with a new pneumatic seed drill and the existing range of pastureready machinery in the Borck shed, this puts the Kaiwaka business ahead of the game for spring, offering the kind of edge and advantage farmers are looking for in today’s competitive agricultural climate.

Ms Kay discovered that the total milk solids response to supplementary feed is on average much lower than previously thought.

Research conditions see supplementary feeds return 70-80g MS/kg DM. This is approximately 7.5g MS/MJ ME offered, and with small herd sizes, loss of supplements is restricted and waste is avoided through careful management to maintain quality.

Commercial farms have reported the average MS response to supplement as being 55g MS/kg DM. This study has found that despite the potential to increase total intake and increase production through adding supplements to pasture, the actual MS response is variable to less than expected.

There are several factors affecting the MS response to supplements including the reduction in pasture intake occurring when supplements are distributed and wastage of supplement which will vary depending on infrastructure, type of supplement and method of feeding as well as energy that is not partitioned directly to milk production. The greatest impact on MS response is the decrease in the amount of pasture consumption when the herd is fed supplements.

Loyalty has its own reward The resumption of Russian imports of hydrous milk fat, whey and milk protein concentrates from Fonterra sites is good news for the cooperative.

New Zealand is not on the list of Russian-banned countries and in spite of trade minister Tim Groser asking primary exporters not to exploit any possible advantage that Fonterra and others may have in dealing with Russia, the government has stated that it is important not to upset trade talks with the United States through the TransPacific Partnership and also with the European Union.

New Zealand has a history of being a good and loyal trading partner not only to Europe but also the United States, but there are numerous examples where this loyalty has not been taken into account, when Europe and America act in their own self-interest.

For more than 100 years, New Zealand’s butter and cheese had arrived in ports in Britain. During the Second World War, New Zealand supplied its dairy products under very favourable terms to the so-called mother country.

This trading relationship changed dramatically with Britain joining the European Community, forcing New Zealand to look for alternative markets throughout Asia, Russia and latterly

China. The then NZ Dairy Board showed commercial enterprise by taking advantage of the then Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev’s new open ‘perestroika’ (reconstruction) and ‘glasnost’ (or openness) policies giving new trade opportunities throughout the world. Mikhail Gorbachev’s ties stem back to the Ukraine or Little Russia, along with other Russian leaders including Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Chernenko.

The Ukraine has been part of Russia for over 240 years, when Catherine the Great reached a peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire in 1774. The Crimea Peninsula which is part of the Ukraine came under Russian rule in 1783 and is a major naval base for the Russian Navy. The region’s vast wheat fields have served as the breadbasket of the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union.

The current American and European embargos against Russia are because the Ukraine wants to secede from Russia, with American and European support. An interesting argument could be made — what if Hawaii, a state within

America, wished to secede from the United States. Would the Americans be so accommodating if it meant giving up their naval bases there?

Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey who is the Dairy Companies Association chairman, stated in the press last week that the industry had no intention of ramping up trade with Russia as a result of the latest reinstatement of licences or any future relaxation of market access conditions and that the Association supported the Western Alliance led by America.

With the greatest of respect, the facts are that while European and American dairy farmers are receiving between $6.95 and $8.15 per kilogram of milk solids, New Zealand dairy farmers are witnessing our so-called allies dumping their surplus dairy produce caused by their embargo against Russia, into our hard-earned markets in China and throughout Asia, without a care for our struggling New Zealand dairy farmers, who may receive $3.85 per kilogram of milk solids this year, if they are lucky.

In economic terms our situation is ridiculous and completely unsustainable.

They profit while we stand naively by.

It is hypocritical that we are told that we shouldn’t take full advantage of our unrestricted access to market our dairy products to Russia. Scottish-born Tim Groser who has acted as New Zealand’s chief negotiator in trade for many years, once summarised that New Zealand could be screwed in areas of trade.

Almost everything New Zealand exported was at the mercy of other countries.

It is ironical that in the book Till the Cows Came Home, Mr Grose reportedly states that to him, the key issues involved getting a framework for international law that would protect New Zealand from what he regarded as outrages. Wealthy nations had to be stopped from ruining the country’s economic future with their export subsidies — even if a measure of quota constraint and import control might have to be accepted for some time to come.

It is my view that America and Europe should have kept this in mind when they unilaterally decided to place a trade ban against Russia to the detriment of small, agricultural-reliant countries like New Zealand.

A white line debate I was reading a recent article about a farmer who has overcome their lameness issues. In the article it is explained how white line disease is caused by long distance walking.

“The sole wears thin and when there is pressure applied to the herd little stones will work their way into the hoof and cause infections.” This article again shows me how there are still people out there with a wrong understanding of what causes white line disease and most lameness issues in New Zealand.

For one, this theory has no evidence to back it up, two, it doesn’t make sense if you think about it and thirdly there is evidence to show this theory to be incorrect. In a previous article I asked people to show me some indisputable evidence to prove the possibility of this theory. I received some responses but no real evidence was presented. I won’t go into that now but I will on the other two points.

One, the theory explained above doesn’t make sense. When cows walk long distances their hooves will wear

faster — that is logical, natural, and if the live tissue in the hoof didn’t respond to that faster wear then the cow would end up with major problems. As a matter of fact, the whole herd would end up with worn out hooves and you would not be able to milk cows on big farms. You would need to keep the cows in their paddock because any unnatural wear on a track will cause a problem with worn out hooves.

Fortunately, cows are created with the ability to adapt just like other creatures.

Just look at your own hands. If you do more physical work with your hands your body responds to that by growing more calluses. In the same way, the corium (live tissue in the claw) will respond to more wear by growing more hoof — especially when they have been walking on the tracks for months. However, sometimes we go to farms and all the hooves are soft and thin. This is true, and the question needs to be asked why

is that? Why does the corium sometimes not respond in a sustainable manner?

The only explanation I can come up with is that the corium is not functioning properly due to being unhealthy or maybe the thinner soles are not a problem to the cow. To answer the question on what makes the corium unhealthy is a whole article or articles on its own.

Second, I also want to show you some evidence of the opposite to be true. Do you notice that white line disease happens more on the outer claw — especially when there is more

height difference between the claws?

So, white line disease actually occurs more often with a thicker sole rather than a thinner sole.

We did a trimming trial a few years ago where we showed that if you trim the outer claw to the same height as the inner claw you end up with less lameness. So, by trimming the outer claw you make it thinner and yet you end up with less lameness. This goes against the theory that was described in the article that I was referring to. I realise that there is a lot more to the white line disease issue than I can cover in this article. I intend to cover a bit more of that in my next article and you can always contact me if you have questions on this subject.

Charging through the rough stuff

It’s been a damp winter to say the least followed up by a rainy spring in the North. While for many people this means full water tanks and irrigated gardens, for others it means acres and acres of mud.

For many people and many machines this is a real obstacle. But for others, such as the Can Am Outlander L’XMR, it’s more of a natural habitat. Because this particular quad is an exercise in engineering to tackle the very worst conditions nature can cook up, using that old fashioned recipe of dirt and precipitation.

Built around a powerful 48 horsepower Rotax 570 engine, the MR in the new Outlander’s name stands for ‘mud ready’, and boy, is it ever. From it’s appropriately named Mudzilla tyres to the remounted radiator sitting high atop a burly roll bar front, the Outlander’s messy ‘cousin’ is built to plunge into terrain where even big off road buggies fear to tread. While the big, reworked single overhead cam, fuel injected mill pumps out the power, the rider sits high and dry, with raised footpegs providing a perch as the Outlander wades through deep boggy puddles and churned up trails.

Power alone is not enough to conquer terrain this messy. Massive suspension travel, an auto locking front differential and three mode power steering have all been deployed to transfer that power

to the ground without slipping and wheelspin. As a package, the lighter, more agile 570 surpasses its 650cc predecessor, proving that when the going gets tough it’s smart design pays dividends, not necessarily tons of grunt.

With a very specific focus, the Outlander L’XMR is obviously an exercise in that kind of designfocused engineering.

But lessons learned from creating such a machine which is primarily aimed at the competitive sports market are all carried through to the working family of Outlander stablemates.

That means more confidence for all Can Am riders in the wet and mud a real godsend when farming in boggy Spring conditions. Certainly, the same mantra holds true from the world of performance cars innovations made to eke out seconds on the track inevitably improve your daily driver. Here, the ability to plunge axles-deep into swamps and keep rolling have been passed along into the DNA of the whole 2016 Can Am Outlander range.

The original iteration of Subaru’s go-anywhere Forester somewhat defied description. Neither a conventional sports utility, nor a standard station wagon of its day, the boxy and voluminous vehicle became a favourite for two markets.

Even today, you’ll see Foresters of that first run in either off-road spec, carrying kayaks and mountain bikes, or with gaudy 20 inch chrome rims, tinted windows and a vast sound system.

In a way, Subaru were ahead of the curve. This was a time before the term ‘crossover SUV’ existed, but the Forester filled the niche nicely, and as a model it has grown into the space with an almost organic evolution. The 2015 Forester looks nothing like its ancestors, but that sense of rugged, up-for-it attitude shines through, even in a sector now bursting at the seams with rivals and imitators.

Some of that charm comes from its looks — this is no shrunken SUV, but stylistically appears to be more of a big, muscular wagon.

It’s certainly slick, machine-gun quick six speed auto, and the Forester presents a package that’s hard to ignore if you are in the market for a lifestyle machine. Even the simple, somewhat austere lines and colours inside the cabin speak more of utility — and being easy to clean — than lacklustre build

In Asia especially the Focus is flying the flag for Ford’s global brand, though here in New Zealand the feisty mid-sized car has tough competition from the likes of Mazda3 and Corolla.

Hunt for dairy pastures

The hunt is on for great dairy pastures in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty and entries are now open for the Pasture Renewal Persistence Competition run by the DairyNZ-led Pasture Improvement Leadership Group.

The competition has been running for five years with winners from all across the two regions.

Competition organiser and DairyNZ developer Sally Peel says pasture renewal is one of the first steps to achieving high performing pastures.

Improving poor yielding paddocks through good renewal practices can achieve substantial increase in pasture tonnage.

“Consecutive summer droughts have been a serious challenge for pasture persistence — despite this pastures have generally recovered well. We’re keen to discover what farmers did to manage their pasture and pasture

renewal so well during the past three years of dry summers,” said Sally.

“We will also be looking for any other information that will help build a picture of the management practices required for persistence of renewed pastures in this environment.”

Winner of the 2014 best first year pasture, Robert Garshaw of Waiuku said: “Decisions such as cultivar and endophyte choice do matter. It’s really important to figure out what works well out of your farm and make the most of the establishment period,” James Booker from Morrinsville won the 2014 best three plus year pasture for his knowledge of the process, his

grazing management and his use of the forage value index in his current decision making.

Farmers can enter in two categories — Waikato/Bay of Plenty first year pasture sown this year and Waikato/ Bay of Plenty pasture sown more than three years ago — before May 2012.

Up for grabs are two pasture renewal prize packages. The prizes are provided

by Agriseeds and Agricom.

Judging will involve a short interview about the soil fertility and the paddock’s history prior to and since re-sowing.

Management practices such as grazing management, endophyte selection, weed control and nitrogen usage will

be discussed. Entries are open until October 24 with judging held during November. Winners’ field days will be held in early December 2015.

The Pasture Renewal Persistence Competition is an initiative of the Pasture Improvement Leadership Group. This is a DairyNZ-led industry group, including researchers, the seed industry, farmers and agricultural contractors, formed to develop better tools, resources and advice for farmers.
