Waikato dairy farmer Doug Courtman believes the Holstein Friesian breed offers all-round profitability for dairy farmers.

That profitability extends from the milk produced in the farm dairy to demand in the domestic beef and live export markets.

He says the Holstein Friesian breed can provide dairy farmers the type of animal they require — from the smaller-framed cow for pasture consumption, to the larger, high-producing cow for high-feed input systems.

“Holstein Friesian herds are amongst the most profitable in the country.”

those arguments are misplaced. “Fewer cows, fewer feet, same production,” Mr Courtman says.

“The amount of income from milk produced outweighs the cost of feeding the animal. More milk means fewer animals to the hectare, therefore not as much damage to land.”

The live export of Holstein Friesians to Asia is still buoyant. But Mr Courtman says it important to keep the best genetics in New Zealand.

Other sources of income the Holstein Friesian breed offer include the sale of bull calves that often make it into the national beef herd, as well as heifer calves that are a crossed with beef.

Bobby calves and cull cows also have an increased value over smaller breeds or cross-bred animals.

James Bryan is passionate about the country’s beef and lamb industry. James, 28, beat 13 other applicants to be chosen as this year’s Beef and Lamb New Zealand beef industry ambassador at the Five Nations Beef Alliance conference and young leaders programme in the United States.

H

e leaves in early October for Corpus Christi in Texas for a five-day conference plus opportunities to visit farms, ranches and feedlots across the state. James’ involvement in the beef industry has

lasted all of his 28 years. He was brought up on a 1600-acre (660ha) beef and sheep farm at Aria in the King Country. “It’s pretty hilly. It’s hard hill country — mostly straight up and straight down.”

His parents still own the property where they graze 150 breeding cows and between 2500 and 3000 ewes.

James works on the farm when he can spare the time and helps with the management strategy for the property.

James completed an agricultural commerce degree at Lincoln University.

But for the last four years he has worked for Ravensdown based in Tirau.

He started off as an account manager but is now agronomy manager for the central North Island. James says his role means lots of contact with farmers and providing advice on farm systems, seeds and agricultural chemicals.

He is heavily involved in Young Farmers New Zealand — both as a committee member for the Waikato/Bay of Plenty branch and as a regular competitor in fencing and debating competitions.

James previously represented New

Zealand in 2012 when he took part in an agricultural exchange to Japan.

James says the decision to apply for the scholarship was simple. “I always love going overseas and learning new things that can help me advance my career.”

His employer, Ravensdown encouraged him to apply.

The process started with writing an essay. “It was about where I’ve come from, where I’m going to — and the biggest issues facing New Zealand’s beef and lamb industry.

That was followed by a phone interview.

“That was a pretty productive phone call. I was asked some hard questions and I gave some logical answers.”

James was out dining with friends when he got another phone call — one that told him he needed to ensure his passport was in order. “I was pretty rapt.”

The Corpus Christi conference is organised by The Five Nations Beef Alliance, a private entity comprising the national organisations that represent beef cattle producers in Australia, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States.

James says the five nations produce one-third of the world’s beef. “It’s a pretty major event.”

He expects to learn a lot, especially about the growing trend to house animals in feed lots. “As New Zealand

farming becomes more intensive, more and more people will be heading for feed lots. I know there are current producers looking at them.”

James says he will also be looking at the environmental impact of beef and lamb production. “Ravensdown asked me to take a close look at it and I’m happy to do that.”

He says the scholarship and opportunity to see how other beef producing nations operate was too good to pass over. “The future is bright for protein farmers in general — whether that be milk or meat. But I believe the industry needs to be a lot more collaborative if we are to get the best prices on the world market. We need to move the production bell curve and lift some of the lower-producing farmers.”

While dairy is suffering a downturn caused by lower world commodity prices, beef is doing well.

He says prospects will remain bright as long as we can access growing Asian markets.

“They are big beef eaters. But we have to present our product in a way that their consumers want.”

James says he is keen to share his knowledge when he returns home.

Longer term he wants to buy his own farm.

Every two years, one hundred and forty wild horses are culled from the Kaimanawa Ranges. Distinct and unique, Kaimanawa horses have roamed this land for over 100 years.

I

Saving a horse and seeing it succeed something you can’t put a price on

ncreased land development, human activity and the establishment of a protected area for horses, has seen their numbers in the Waiouru Military Training Area decline and then increase dramatically. Adverse effects on the environment became a concern.

In 1996, the Minister of Conservation issued the Kaimanawa Wild Horses Plan and in accordance with this, the herd was culled significantly the following year.

Five hundred horses, out of a population of nearly 2,000, were retained and annual musters were introduced.

In 2004, a revised plan was prepared and in 2010, the herd was reduced to 300. Subsequently, musters are now carried out every two years.

In the midst of this, Kaimanawa Heritage Horses (KHH) was born - a non-profit charitable trust, dedicated to the welfare of this historically important breed. Their goal is to home as many

of the culled horses as possible and prevent their imminent slaughter.

“The initial cull was indiscriminate - the helicopters went in and brought out the first horses they came to, nothing was released. It got to a stage

that all the horses would have gone to slaughter and this is how my wife and I became involved,” says KHH chairman, Elder Jenks.

“We went to the Department of Conservation with another group and asked if things could be changed and

after a year or two, it was agreed that we would rehome the horses. In 2003, we formed this group and today, we place the bulk of the horses.

“Our process is thorough, we require a couple of referees, including a vet, and we have volunteers who cover the whole of the North Island and some of South, inspecting properties. There are a lot of good hearted people, but they also have to have the facilities and the abilities.”

During this year’s muster, over two days on May 31 and June 1, 162 horses were brought out of the Kaimanawa Ranges. KHH placed 139 and another group placed eight.

Evidently passionate about his work these days, Elder says he didn’t much care for animals - of any kind - until he met his wife Marilyn “who saves everything.”

special and very much a part of our history. They’ve lived in one of the severest parts of the country for just on 160 years with no help from man, only hindrance, right in behind an army camp.”

KHH is behind a new event debuting at this year’s Equidays. The Major Milestone - part one of the Kaimanawa Stallion Challenge - will see experienced trainers reveal their Kaimanawa horse for the first time, just 150 days into his life as a domesticated gelding, capable of taking part in a wide variety disciplines.

“In the early days, nearly every male horse over two years old went

to slaughter, so we decided to do a challenge, similar to those held in the United States and also Australia. This way we managed to place quite a few of the older males with people who are qualified to handle them.”

The final competition in the Challenge will take place at Horse of the Year 2015.

“Looking back, there have been many special moments for us. It’s a big thing to see a frightened little horse come in from the wild and then see him doing well and giving someone pleasure.

We now have a really good working relationship with the veterinary association, the Department of Conversation, the army, the musterers and the helicopter pilots.”

In November, KHH has its annual fundraiser, which sees several bus loads travel into the Kaimanawa Ranges, over two days, giving people a rare opportunity to see the horses first hand.

“Our ambition has always been to save all the horses,” adds Elder. “And we’re getting pretty close.”

It could be argued that in New Zealand, more than anywhere else in the world, we should value the engineering history which has made our numerous agricultural achievements possible.

Which leads us to a group of dedicated people — many of them successful farmers in their own right — who have, through their interest in all things mechanical, become the custodians of a large part of that history.

Kevin Beck is the secretary and a longstanding member of the Waikato Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club, a motivated group who meet in Cambridge each month to further the cause of vintage machinery preservation.

“We began the Waikato Vintage Machinery and Tractor Club about 30 years ago,” says Mr Beck, “And five years later we collaborated with the

local classic car club to hold a joint Swap Meet day. The organisers did it on a shoestring budget, but it was quite a success.”

This could be a bit of an understatement. The club has gone on to attract over 200 members, spanning all manner of machines and time periods.

“We have John Deere collectors, Massey Ferguson collectors — there’s a friendly rivalry between those who collect and restore different brands — sort of like the ‘Ford versus Holden’ debate among car collectors,” he says. But Kevin (who himself enjoys working on and collecting Farmall tractors) points out that his fellow vintage machinery enthusiasts are down to earth, often from farming backgrounds, and this is as much a social club as it is a historical and restorative one.

“We began the Waikato Vintage Machinery and Tractor Club about 30 years ago” “A lot of them have worked in the trade — farming or contracting — many worked a big part of their lives with machines like these, tractors, bulldozers and the like. We tend to be people of an engineering, practical mind,” says the club’s secretary. “Let’s put it this way — none of our guys has his nose stuck up in the air!”

Club members watch with interest as this big John Deere is fired up for a test run

from humble beginnings to the tractors which are now relied upon on every farm in New Zealand. Along the way there have been some interesting quirks of mechanical evolution, and these machines are kept, not as museum pieces, but as working examples of historic engineering, alongside early bulldozers, harvesters and other tools of industry.

This non-museum status means that the Waikato Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club’s inventory can actually be seen at work. Comments about big boys and their toys aside, there are few simple pleasures to compare with firing

up a vintage bulldozer and shifting vast amounts of dirt, or watching a vintage steam engine come to life with a cloud of sparks and a literal hiss and roar.

In fact, Kevin points out that the current national vintage ploughing champ, Mr Paul Houghton, is a member of the club, and uses machinery he’s restored to contest ploughing titles.

The Waikato Vintage Machinery and Tractor Club host their own ploughing day in September each year, as well as a ‘steel tracks day’ when bulldozers from yesteryear come out of the shed and work like new again. But perhaps still the biggest day on their calendar

Enterprising awards attracts strong line-up

This year’s Enterprising Rural Women Awards has attracted a strong line-up from 17 exciting and innovative businesses.

Now into it’s sixth year, the Rural Women New Zealand initiative celebrates women running small rural businesses and gives them the opportunity to boost their profiles and gain recognition for their achievements.

“It’s encouraging to see the diversity of businesses being run by women in rural areas and the significant contribution they make to the wider economy,” says Rural Women national president, Wendy McGowan.

“Each year we see a greater sophistication in the marketing and presentation of businesses that enter these awards.

“As broadband slowly rolls out into rural communities, it is increasing business opportunities and levelling the playing field for rural enterprises, even when operating from remote locations.

“A web presence is so important for online sales and reservations. However, there are businesses who have entered who still have no cellphone coverage,

which means added challenges in communicating with customers, and distance to markets is always going to be a factor.”

Through the awards, Rural Women NZ raises awareness of women’s entrepreneurship and their input into rural communities, creating local employment and often supplementing on-farm income.

There are four categories: Love of the Land; Help I Need Somebody; Making it in Rural, and Stay, Play, Rural — and the winner in each category will go on to compete for the title of supreme winner.

This year’s entries include a plant nursery, a free range pig farm, a boutique law firm, a manufacturer of lamb coats, peony-based healthcare and top end accommodation.

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony to be held on the opening night of the Rural Women NZ national conference in Rotorua on November 15.

Old strategies to lift farm profits

With tighter payouts farmers will need to look for opportunities to save money and keep the farm moving forward.

A big percentage of farming operates on natural capital such as topsoil, rain, sunshine, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. These gaseous elements make up 97.5 percent of the pasture’s mineral requirement, so a shift to accessing all the farm’s nitrogen directly out of the atmosphere for free, would be a good move to reduce one of the major spends on farms, today.

Agrissentials’ customers have been doing this for years. This atmospheric nitrogen has always been there for plants.

Once you install this natural system on your farm, clover will become abundant and you can’t beat clover for production of milk and meat. Ruminant animals thrive on it and it doesn’t damage our environment. So you save money, your production increases, your animals are more content and healthier, soil and animal fertility increases, so you won’t be concerned about next year’s ban on inductions and the Regional Council will love you. What a fantastic deal!

Another cost saver is not to grow maize. Grain is for birds. Ruminant animals are grass converters. The top price for beef in the USA is all grass

fed beef and the top money for milk in Europe is all grass fed milk. Ruminants are good at it. Agrissentials’ system encourages you to increase the mineral content and microbial mass in your soil.

This is paramount for production. The less you interfere with your soil, the better the soil operates. You will get far more nutrition from your grass on our system than growing grains, which is a cost that doesn’t make sense when you’re farming ruminants.

Another money saver is not to regrass. The trials on ten irrigated dairy farms in Canterbury and North Otago were carried out to determine the value of regrassing on long-term production and persistence of new pastures. After three years, the average production over all farms, surprisingly, showed the ‘new’, ‘control’ and ‘good’ paddocks all reproduced the same amount of grass.

(Trial work was led by Lincoln based Anna Taylor and funded by Dairy NZ).

Save Lives

One of the easiest mistakes to make when designing a new ATV quad is to scrap components and features which made people like the original model in the first place.

Sophistication may seem like a fine thing in a brochure, but in the rough and tumble world of farming there’s something to be said for the tried and true approach.

Take the no-nonsense old Land Rover Defender for example. The ‘new money’ in rural England might get about in Porsche Cayenne turbos, but when the Lord of the Manor wants to shoot game, he gets out the knobbly-tyred old series 2.

Many a fancy machine has been dragged out of the mud here, too, by something more rough around the edges.

All of this analogy is leading up to a compliment for the hard-working little 300cc King Quad. You see, it hasn’t been overhauled in a few years now, and the Suzuki R and D boys have a reason for that. Or two. One is the fact that the ruggedly competent 2004 model has been a steady seller with farmers, who tend to vote with their wallets on what is durable and gets the job done. The second is that, in terms of a sweet balance between fuel economy, lightness and agility the King

Quad 300 hits the nail on the head for Kiwi farming conditions.

The willing little 280cc mill with it’s single Mikuni carb is not in the domain of rocket science, but it has proven awfully hard to kill. Likewise, the transmission’s addition of a super-low range for bags of pulling power has become a farm favourite. A big hearty reserve of midlow-range torque in general is just what cattle farmers need to navigate muddy fields, and this is what the little Suzuki delivers, making chores like shifting the herd that little bit easier.

The King Quad made it’s debut in the early 1990s, and very little has been changed in terms of the basic platform.

Indeed, a radical redesign is actively resisted by Suzuki, who have learned the big lesson of the VW Beetle. The original was built from the 1940s up until very recently. It was the national taxicab of Mexico and Brazil, survived in the Amazon and the Sahara — but the new Beetle already looks a bit last century. Suzuki hope that the King Quad — like the DR200 Trojan 2-wheeler — remains evergreen in Kiwi pastures.

Innovations in tractor technology for crop and livestock farmers have seen machines destined for a life on the open paddocks evolve over the years.

new control layout, centred around a colour screen. The chunky, tactile ‘cogs’ which are the dials for entertainment and climate control are intuitive enough to step in and command without even looking at a manual.

So, here we have a supermini well worthy of the name — practical, comfortable, a pleasure to drive, with the will to attack every apex and more power than its diminutive cc rating would suggest. A contender which punches above it’s weight in a very literal sense, delivering a more balanced performance than rivals such as the Barina and Polo, for a very reasonable price. And this is all before we even touch on the little Ford’s knockout punch (to tax the boxing metaphor).

At less than 4 litres per 100 kilometres, the new Fiesta seems all but teetotal. And it really is more of a ‘little brother’ to the slightly mad, totally engaging Fiesta ST than it is a workaday commuter tool.

The only way to appreciate what Ford have achieved here is to take it for a drive. You won’t have had more fun with less than 1,000cc since the last time you saddled up a mid-range GSXR or Ninja. And the best part is, this time you don’t have to wear a leather speed suit.

Managing your build — start to finish

It’s been nearly two years now since changes to building law tightened up the responsibilities of those who we trust to construct our homes and businesses.

In that time the new laws have been tested in perhaps the toughest crucible of all — the massive rebuild undertaken after the Christchurch earthquakes.

the least of which is the now crucial role of the project manager in orchestrating a seamless build. The project manager is like the conductor of an orchestra. It’s their job to keep track of subcontractors and make sure that everyone with input to the build is on the same (blueprint) page, fully qualified and competent to complete their task. When it comes to choosing someone for this vital role, here are three popular ways to go.

For complex or one-off designs, many people keep on their registered architect, architectural designer or architectural draughtsperson. This is a good idea if the written instructions on paper need ‘directorial’ interpretation, and a hands-on approach from the visionary who created them.

A second option, popular with ‘kitset’ or template-built homes, is to let the home building or subdivision development company take charge.

Some offer a whole package, comprising land, home, building, painting, flooring — even furniture and curtains. A good choice for those who want a stress free but conventional and perhaps conservative design.

By far the most popular method is to appoint a qualified builder as project manager. It seems to be part of the Kiwi psyche to trust the man behind the tools to also handle the other tradespeople

Planning vital for best results

Ask any seasoned real estate professional, and they are likely to tell you the same thing — a home is only as modern and functional as its kitchen and bathroom areas.

While other rooms are relatively easy to change, rearrange and redecorate, sometimes (as seen on television) by adding furnishings and artwork, the fixtures and fittings of both the bathroom and kitchen tend to be made of more solid stuff.

A remodel in these areas can soon spiral out of control both in terms of time and money unless some savvy planning is engaged beforehand.

Bear in mind, too, that trends in design can date an entire home just from the kitchen or bathroom. Brown and orange formica? Welcome back to 1977! Floral prints and pastel pink? 1986. Choosing a look which will prove timeless is often a matter of compromise between

Resting time versus standing time There seems to be less lame cows so far this season compared to the two previous seasons. Why is that?

Some people may be thinking that the money they spent on their tracks over the winter is already paying off.

Maybe it is, but I would like to direct your attention to another possibility.

Last month I talked to you about the effects of the track and how it can put a lot of stress on cows by reducing their resting time.

Let’s go with that train of thought for a bit.

Did your cows get the rest over the winter that they needed? Many of you may think this to be a ridiculous question as all the cows did was spend time in the paddock, so of course they got all the resting that they needed. Is that true? When cows are in the paddock for a whole day, does that mean they can automatically get the rest they need?

I would argue that they don’t. This is especially true when cows are on winter crops. Have you noticed that cows do a lot more standing in crop paddocks than on dry grass paddocks? If you drive through the country-side in the winter after a shower of rain, you will see most cows standing up in crop paddocks. Fair enough. I wouldn’t like to lay down in the mud either.

So if you look at this winter where the weather was a lot warmer and dryer, cows would have had more resting time.

Remember that resting time is laying

down time. Standing time is not resting time. So if cows had more resting time over the winter they will be less likely to come in lame after calving. And I believe that this is what we are seeing.

So what can we learn from this? I believe we need to farm in a much more cow friendly manner.

It is my belief that most farms are not set up or managed in a particularly cow friendly way.

I don’t have a problem with feeding cows winter crops.

They are probably good food for them and cheaper for the farmer but we do need to keep the basic needs of the cows in mind. One of the basic needs for a cow is to have sufficient laying down time. If we have cows on winter crops then we need to be prepared for the times when we do

get rain. This may mean that we could harvest some of the winter crops and feed it out in a paddock of grass that is dry enough for the cows to lie down in.

I know it costs more money to dig up the fodder beet but if that means less lame cows in the milking season then that money will come back. Even if it didn’t, is it not our responsibility to look after our cows?

If we want to keep our cows then let’s be proactive in ensuring their basic needs are provided for.

Hence regardless of exemplary breeding efforts, events encountered early in life (including pre-birth) can have short and long-term consequences which will influence an individual animal’s predisposition to disease, its resilience combating disease, growth patterns, fertility and milk production.

Scientists studying early development in animals, humans and agriculture refer to this as ‘epigenetics’ and it presents the opportunity to change what we might have considered to be hardwired.

For example, factors such as nutrition (how much an animal eats, what its mother eats when in-calf, what it eats in the early growth stages to a yearling) and mating weights can affect how

effective and efficient that animal will be at converting feed to milk throughout its entire lifetime. It can affect ability to get in-calf, length of gestation, and the health of its offspring.

This translates to treating your girls well and paying particular attention to them when they’re young, when they are mated and when they’re in-calf.

Therefore farmers who are able to exercise control over the nutrition of their cattle and track target weights for mating have the potential to reap long-term rewards. These rewards will include better milk production and disease resistance and may even carry over positive effects which flow on to the next generation of milkers.

Nutrition of plants – Magnesium

Magnesium is a frequently overlooked element that is important for the nutrition of both plants and animals. In plants, it has quite literally a central role in photosynthesis since a magnesium ion is required right in the middle of the chlorophyll molecule.

Leaf yellowing can be a tell-tale sign of magnesium deficiency since magnesium is required not only in chlorophyll but also for the formation of the chlorophyll proteins.

Since several other elements cause leaf yellowing, diagnosis needs to take the pattern of yellowing into account look for yellowing in between the leaf veins on older leaves. In animals, magnesium is important for the proper function of the muscles and nervous system as well as brain function and bone structure.

Plants and animals can be efficient at maintaining the right amount of most minerals but magnesium is more of a challenge than most.

Livestock require a narrow range of blood magnesium levels for good muscle function, yet have a limited capacity for storing and releasing magnesium within the cells and have no trigger to release magnesium from the bone in response to low magnesium levels (unlike the well-controlled mechanisms for maintaining blood calcium level).

So adequacy of magnesium is quite dependent on availability of magnesium in the feed. And this availability is often compromised by high potassium levels.

A seasonal issue is the release of high levels of potassium from the soil in spring while temperatures are still too cool for much release of magnesium from soil organic matter. Plant uptake of magnesium can also be limited in low pH conditions.

Plants have some ability to compensate for low uptake of magnesium but this is through the export of magnesium from older leaves to younger leaves thus reducing photosynthesis and pasture quality.

Low plant magnesium levels can also result in higher levels of non-protein nitrogen such as nitrate when protein synthesis is compromised as well as issues with the transport of sugars to where they are needed in the plant, all further compromising plant growth and feed quality.

A basic soil test will include pH and available magnesium. Try to maintain a good soil pH to improve magnesium availability and if soil magnesium levels are low and/or potassium levels high, dolomite lime could be appropriate to lift magnesium availability in the long term as well as lifting the pH of an acid soil.

Serpentine is another long term approach to lifting magnesium availability.

Seasonally low magnesium availability can impact on both plant growth and livestock health.

Within a pasture it will often be clover that is hit hardest by poor magnesium availability.

A white clover only leaf test in late October or early November before the clovers go to flower can help pick up magnesium and other requirements.

If you notice magnesium deficiency symptoms in crops, magnesium can be directly addressed with fast available fertilisers such as the sulphate form, natural kieserite or magnesium oxide. Foliar application of soluble magnesium can very quickly address magnesium requirements.

Dusting or even more direct forms of livestock supplementation are often required to prevent livestock hypomagnesia. A general improvement in magnesium content of pasture and feed throughout the seasons may also assist in good temperament and muscle function in livestock.

It's carbo-loading time for pasture soils With dairy commodity prices on a downward spiral and the prediction of yet another summer drought dairy farmers should be short-listing management options that best allow them to retain production levels, and at the same time, also minimise farming inputs.

With those two key requirements in mind, loading the soil with carbonates — or carbo-loading the soil with McDonald’s AgLime to improve spring pasture

— should be right at the top of their list. So lets take a look at how carbo-loading works. Limestone is made of calcium carbonate. When finely ground

LEADERSHIp In LIME limestone — McDonalds AgLime — is placed in or on the soil, the carbonate reacts with acid (H+) from the soil to form carbon dioxide and water. The calcium is released as Ca2+ to replace the H+ consumed by the reaction. The result of this process is a reduction of the amount of free acid in the soil, so the pH level increases.

That improved pH is exactly what farmers should be looking for because it creates the ideal environment for the plant to up-take ions such as calcium and magnesium, over and above other less desirable nutrients.

Dependent on the soil type, carbo-loading to reach a soil pH of 5.8 to 6.2 for mineral soils and 5.0 to 5.5 for peat soils, helps provide the environment that is vital for improved earthworm activity, soil aeration, root development, soil structure and pasture growth.

And with the likelihood of drought on the horizon, it is well worth noting that carbo-loading also equips soils to retain moisture and withstand the impact of drought better.

Additionally, it can also facilitate better pasture utilisation and help reduce the fertiliser inputs needed to maintain your production.

Other important benefits from carbo-loading of soil include the following: Better pasture quality promotes higher production options and improved animal health. This in turn can lead to reductions in feed supplement requirements and veterinary interventions.

To stop weeds, take care of the land from the ground up. Cultivate with deep tines and harrows to aerate the soil, then seed a certified weed-free, hardy form of grass appropriate to the moisture content and drainage of your pasture.

Pugged paddocks won’t grow the best crop, so the roller may come into play as well, before nitrogen is spread for maximum soil fertility. Regular grazing throughout the season and the year helps too.

Insect pests, such as weevils, grass grubs, army worms and the like are also best managed by taking care of the pasture from a ‘grass roots’ level.

Chemicals can be effectively used to quash infestations, but even better is the more natural approach as practised since the middle ages. Consider planting a ‘break crop’, especially in summer. Valuable dry mass for feed can be gained from, for example, a turnip crop in summer, breaking the pest’s life cycle by depriving it of its favourite food — and as a bonus, alternative cropping and rotation of the paddock has been proven to help reduce pugging damage and fix soil nutrients.
