Ecology skills take out innovation award Waikato Regional Council ecologist Bruno David has won a prestigious science award for innovative projects to protect native fish and control populations of invasive species.

The Kudos — Hamilton Excellence Awards were held in Hamilton earlier this month and are an annual celebration of science research and discovery from the Waikato.

Dr David took out the New Zealand National Fieldays Innovation Award for a number of projects he has been leading — from the protection and restoration of native fish habitats to developing an automated system to control invasive fish, in particular koi carp, in the lower Waikato catchment.

“It’s been exciting to develop innovative ideas which are about dealing with problems and turning them into positive environmental outcomes,” Dr David says.

“Invasive fish cause major problems globally. In New Zealand, existing conditions favour the proliferation Waikato Regional Council ecologist of pest species such as Bruno David with his innovation award catfish, carp and goldfish.

“Our invasive fish ‘recycling’ centre David has been investigating its use and demonstration site at Lake Waikare as a fertiliser for native plants, as well incorporates the use of an invasive as carpacinno baits and chew cards for fish trap combined with an energy- controlling other invasive animals such efficient bacterial digester to process as stoats, pigs and rats.

Good ideas lead to on-farm success

Gallagher Group has been recognised at this year’s New Zealand Innovators Awards for its design thinking, culture of innovation and sustained market success.

The Hamilton-based company received the Sustained Innovation Excellence Award at an Auckland awards ceremony attended by 600 people.

Two of Gallagher’s 2014 entries also made the finals an incredible six times. The Ring Top Post in Innovation in Agriculture & Environment; the T20 in Innovation in Design & Engineering; and both submissions reached the finals for Emerging New Zealand Innovator and Export Innovator of the Year categories.

Dairy farming is in the blood for the country’s Dairy Trainee of the Year.

R

uth Hone from Taupo won the 2014 award at a gala dinner at Auckland’s Skycity Convention Centre.

Her involvement in the industry has been life-long. “My parents owned a farm at Ngakuru, near Rotorua. I helped with the milking and raising calves.”

Ruth went to a local primary school before doing her secondary education at Nga Tawa girls’ school near Marton.

Despite its rural location, Nga Tawa is essentially an urban school and Ruth was unable to do agriculture until her final year and even then only by correspondence.

She made up for lost time at Massey University, graduating with a degree in agriculture before finding a farm job in Hawke’s Bay. Ruth entered the Dairy Trainee of the Year Award two years ago, encouraged by her then employers Ben Smith and Monty Monteith.

She finished second in the regional competition, although only the winners made it through to the national finals.

But Ruth says she learned a lot and left determined to enter again.

In 2014 Ruth tried again. By this time she had moved to Taupo to work for Corey Davison on his property milking 380 cows.

The regional competition involves a 20-minute practical test followed by a 20-minute interview.

Ruth says her practical test included changing a wheel on a farm bike, changing blades on a mower, identifying

species of pasture, undertaking some fencing and responding to a motorbike accident.

In her second run at the event, Ruth went one better, winning the Central Plateau region and making it through to the national finals.

That meant another round of practical exercises and interviews.

But when it came to the judges’ announcement, Ruth says she was not feeling confident. “I was a bit nervous.

The competition was tough. I thought Josh Lavender from the South Island was going to win. When my name was read out I was absolutely floored.”

Her parents Bob and Bridget made the trip to Auckland and were present, making Ruth’s success extra special.

“They were stoked,” says Ruth. “My dad cried.”

Ruth won more than $18,000 in prizes include a Honda motorbike, a Federated Farmers’ leadership course and a $2000 voucher from appliance retailer Noel Leeming.

ASK MANY FOREIGN TOURISTS WHAT THEY KNOW ABOUT NEW ZEALAND AND ONE IS BOUND TO STUMBLE OVER THE SAME CULTURAL TOUCHSTONES — LORD OF THE RINGS SCENERY, TOWERING KAURI FORESTS, STILL ALPINE LAKES — AND OF COURSE, THE CULTURAL TREASURE WHICH IS WAITOMO CAVES.

W

ith an underground galaxy of glow-worms, blackwater rafting, and magnificent caverns reminiscent of vaulted cathedrals, this buried kingdom is high on the list for offshore visitors.

But there’s an added attraction just around the corner from the geological wonderland of Waitomo. Aboveground, on a patch of farmland within a short walk from the caverns, farm-stay hosts Brian Coombe and Narita Fletcher and their young family are introducing guests to another iconic part of New Zealand culture — our farming lifestyle. And while it’s easy to assume that seeing pigs, lambs, calves and other barnyard animals in their rural habitat (along with that even more fascinating specimen, the real Kiwi farmer) may be less exciting than a subterranean odyssey, Narita says that for many of her visitors, just getting to interact with real animals among the green grass of the Waikato is a mind-blowing world away from the everyday.

Farming has always been about caring for animals - but in the case of Waitomo Farmstay the livestock are really part of the family

elcome to Little Acres Rehoming Farm (LARA) — a privately owned animal rescue centre, specialising in the rehabilitation of farm animals.

“In the beginning, this wasn’t our intention,” says Jacqui Emmett, who moved to New Zealand from England in 2006 with her husband, Barry and daughter, Charlea.

“There was a slump in the market and we always wanted to retire to the country, so we were looking for a retirement home. I guess we had a little notion of becoming self-sufficient

but raising animals hadn’t crossed our mind — we were thinking more about fruit and vegetables!

“This place was pretty run down. It had been on the market for two and a half years and although the house was solid, the farm was deteriorating and covered in weeds.

“We had no farm machinery or equipment, so we cleared the land the old- fashioned way, sharing one spade, one trowel and one wheelbarrow at a time.”

Emma spells out the joys of home from a long line of animals lovers but in terms of farm animals, she admits there was a lot of guess work in the early days.

“When we came here, we thought maybe we could have a few hens and they would lay a few eggs but we really had no idea. As it happened, the local farmers came to us.

“Our landmark moment was when a farmer came to our gate at eight o’clock one night with a little lamb in his arms.

It was a triplet and not drinking and he asked if we could save it.

“My head was saying ‘Are you crazy?

I’m from a town in England, I don’t know anything about lambs, of course I can’t save it!’ but my heart answered. So we Googled how to look after a lamb and fed her with a syringe for a week until she was strong enough to drink.”

Cookie is still alive today and she was the turning point. Soon another farmer showed up and then another “and so it all began.”

LARA’s four acres and large pond provides a transitional, and sometimes permanent, home for feathered and furry friends, including ducks, chickens, geese, and pukeko, kunekune and saddleback pigs and goats, rabbits and guinea pigs — and whatever else may come their way. Barry is

the ‘breadwinner’ and commutes to Auckland daily for work at KiwiRail.

Charlea, 21, turned down university, preferring to stay on the farm for the sake of the animals.

Jacqui says they do a lot of running around and rescuing and sometimes physically stop the illegal slaughter of animals. Last year they saved and rehomed 167 goats. Their aim is to give

every animal a healthy life. Little Acres Rehoming Farm encourage visitors and are keen to help educate people about animal welfare.

There is no charge for visiting the farm and no surrender fees for animals but they do gratefully accept donations — be it cash or vouchers, hay or straw, old newspapers, pallets, sheets or towels, buckets, plants or building materials.

“This is a permanent and lifelong undertaking for us and we didn’t set this up with the mindset of getting others to pay. We discussed this and we made a decision. The animals kept coming, so this is our life now.”

Long term, Jacqui would like to see the farm become self-sustaining, with orchards and gardens growing much of their animal feed.

In fact, there are a number of things you can do to speed up the process, reduce frustrations, avoid delays and ultimately, save time and money. Take note of a few key terms.

Firstly, there is recession planes. This is an angle taken from the boundary, to determine whether a proposed building will shade a neighbouring property. It is essential that the recession plane calculation is shown on elevation plans and this should include the setback, recession plane height and the angle you are using.

The recession plane height is measured from the lower ground level, so it is important to note whether the ground level drops at the boundary.

This is particularly important in new subdivisions, as the ground level of the new subdivision is often higher than the established adjoining residential properties.

Secondly, think about site plans.

These should be kept clean by only showing setback measurements and always remember to document these on your plan — only showing a scale is not

enough information for processors to go by. Use additional plans to show things such as drainage and geotech levels.

For the site plans of rural lots, it is important to show the setbacks to all boundaries, even when the closest boundary is several hundred metres away.

Lastly, consider the use of buildings as it is important to clearly define the use of any accessory building on your site plan.

For example, note the expected use of a farm building with something like, ‘storage of farm items’, ‘housing of calves’, ‘storage of hay’ or ‘storage of contractor equipment’. This will clearly identify how the building is intended to be used and will avoid confusion in the processing stage.

You can also access application forms, checklists, and links to other useful sites.

New life for old buildings

Travel around rural New Zealand and you will soon pass by structures built originally for one specific purpose, only to be transformed into something completely different.

It may be a barn, a church, or even a humble shearing shed, but imagination, innovation, and a little hard work will have radically altered the intent of the original structure.

Creating a new home from a dilapidated old building intended for a purpose entirely different takes imagination, time, perseverance and foresight as well as a highly flexible approach to budgeting but if you are creative and resourceful, the end result can be great.

For the most part a rural building, be it on old church for a community long since absorbed into populations elsewhere — usually into an urban area, or a barn, or shearers’ quarters, will be found in nice rural settings, perhaps with old established trees or shelter belts, and often water nearby.

When embarking on a renovation project you need to note that the grand purpose is to retain the unique character of such buildings while coping with structural and design problems as you uncover them. Old structures are a lot more work than building from the ground up.

Check first with the local council authority, to make sure you can begin conversion work. Just because you may have acquired an empty barn does not mean you will automatically be able to convert it. Many barns, churches and other old buildings are restricted by the historic places people — or you may need the big tick from a church authority.

Another prerequisite will be to have any building properly surveyed before taking the big step of purchase and change. Architects and structural engineers come into play here.

Mowing in greener pastures

The days of pushing a mechanical rotary mower across acres of verdant lawn are far behind us — replacing the clack and clatter of blades with the purr of horsepower on any given Sunday.

And it’s quite an arms race out there, with lawn-care engineers vying to create the perfect machine to tackle the maintenance of even the wildest back yard.

In rural New Zealand, larger lawns (which quite often blend seamlessly into the acreage reserved for livestock) have often meant that a push mower was never enough — like TV’s Hank Hill, men of the land have developed an abiding respect for the convenience of the rideon mower. Technology in this field has proceeded apace with developments in quad bikes, utes, tractors and other vital tools often lumped together under the unfair classification of ‘big boy’s toys’ — we know for certain that machines like the new Victa NXT lawn tractor are vital time saving, back-achereducing godsends.

Victa have been crafting mowers for Kiwi lawns for over five decades, and though they began in New South Wales, they have been embraced on this side of the Tasman for their powerful, no-nonsense approach to mower design. The NXT series is no exception, drawing on Victa’s alliance with parent company Briggs and Stratton to put

more power at the driver’s command.

That power comes from a Briggs and Stratton professional series flat v-twin — an engine with a similar layout to that found in a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Here, the two cylinders are laid out horizontally, and produce an ample 23 horsepower, driving a wide, 1.17 metre triple bladed cutting deck. This means less passes to cut the average lawn down to size, but Victa’s engineers haven’t stopped with simply beefing up the NXT’s grunt. As very few lawns are flat, cricketpitch expanses of easily tamed ryegrass, the NXT has been designed with stability and nimble turning in mind, enabling whoever is in command to handle this 263 kilogram lawn tractor as deftly as a safety razor for edging and nipping around trees.

To enable this, the NXT has a tiny 35cm turning radius, and comes equipped with cruise control for those back-and-forth switchbacks. And, for

that professional looking finish, it will cut down to a militarily precise 3.8cm, evenly across the yard. With Spring well and truly here, many folks are looking at the riot of verdancy out the window with

growing trepidation. The good news is, like modern utes, ATVs and other serious farming equipment, the ride-on mower is keeping pace with technology, offering better ride comfort and ergonomics to match a boost in power and reliability.

Nowadays, of course, the big green and yellow machines carrying the smith’s name are a symphony of hydraulics and diesel power, a fixture of worldwide agriculture.

More thrills from Commodore’s compact cousin

That the smaller, more nimble, more economical car will win out over big, brash and fuel-heavy stablemates is the tortoise and the hare story of modern motoring.

It’s easy to feel nostalgic for the muscular brutes which dominated the highways in the past — and indeed, to be covetous of the last great examples of the species. But small cars are undoubtedly the future, and making them appeal to those who would normally rather pilot a rumbling V8 monster is the name of the game.

With 60 years of producing some of New Zealand’s favourite cars, Holden are in a state of transition right now, facing the end of the iconic Commodore badge which is known and loved by petrolheads across Australasia. From the FJ, through to the Kingswood and the mighty SS Commodores of today, Holden have always done big cars well, toe to toe with Ford’s V8 Falcon offerings each year both on the streets and on the hallowed tarmac of Bathurst.

So it’s a bit surprising to learn that the more diminutive Cruze actually outsold the Commodore at the start of its lifespan. The Cruze offered a refined and well appointed package for a tidy

price, but over time the big sedan has caught up with it, and so Holden have added some spice, creating the new Cruze Sri-Z series hatch.

The mid-sized Holden benefits from the loss of a boot when it comes to looks — a tough transition, sometimes, but one which looks natural here. Any suggestion that the car’s silhouette resembles the previous Focus must be quickly quashed. Under the hood there’s a 1.6 litre turbo charged engine, giving this new Cruze hot hatch credibility and a fair amount of boost with minimal lag. A crisp 132kw of power are sent to the road through a six-speed box, with purists preferring the manual option for its satisfyingly light touch. A six-speed auto is also available.

But the best part of this Z-series ‘remix’ of the Cruze is the ride, improved immeasurably by a more advanced Watts

link rear suspension setup. The little hatch carves through the corners like its bigger cousin the Commodore wishes it could — and when you add up the facts that this eminently reasonably priced car features a grab-bag of electronic gadgetry, leather-wrapped heated seats and handling like this, going Euro

begins to look like a needless expense.

Perhaps the big V8 is on the way to museum status.

True believers will fight this every step of the way. But if Holden can make small cars like this, then the future of motoring will at least still be an interesting place.

Prepared to weather the hard knocks

The Polaris Ranger has proven a hit on Kiwi farms, with its combination of utility, safety and economical power.

In both petrol and diesel powered forms, the tough side-by-side UTVs have become a fixture of the rural landscape, spawning many imitators and contenders for the crown.

That’s why Polaris have engaged in some serious research before unveiling their new Ranger 570 — a machine which they say sets a new benchmark.

To do this, they haven’t turned to the lab or to a specially designed wind tunnel — not even a closed racetrack.

They’ve instead taken in feedback from actual working farmers, listening to the demands of our terrain and our hard-as-nails rural conditions. They’ve been told — loudly — that a machine fit for parks maintenance or a hunting jaunt along a tidy trail is likely to take a hammering when subjected to the knocks, bumps, hard labour and muddy winters which are sure to be thrown at any serious farming tool.

What has come out

of this process is new from the ground up. Polaris begin by strengthening the chassis and suspension components with thick, heavy duty steel for endurance, and easy-access grease fittings for quick maintenance.

From the winning formula of the Polaris Ute super-ATV they have brought in four-wheel descent control, a safe and

sure-footed way to tackle steep and slippery terrain.

Ground clearance is higher, suspension travel longer, engine power up by 10 percent, and power steering is now standard.

The core of the Ranger’s new incarnation is a powerful 567cc engine producing 44 horsepower, all fed to the ground through a clever four-wheel drive system and those grippy, knobbly tyres.

And, although it will soon be covered in proper Kiwi mud, it’s not a bad looking

beast either, in fire-engine red trim.

Polaris burst onto the scene with their original Ranger, carving out a niche as a versatile working man’s UTV and winning fans with no-nonsense performance on the farm. This new iteration of the Ranger stays true to the old rule, and doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any indications. But it does improve on what is already a popular package, and its ‘heavy duty’ rural focus is sure to be welcomed by those who now see the UTV as a farming necessity.

Why older cows become lame I once was asked why older, high-producing cows become lame more often than younger ones.

That is a good question, but not always accurate.

Some farmers get a lot of lame heifers as well. This has a lot to do with the different stresses on the different animal age groups. Let’s look at the older, high-producing cows. What is going

on for those animals? Well, to start off with, they are older and high-producing.

A high-producing cow is under a lot more stress than a low-producing cow.

You may have heard of the comparison between a cow and an athlete — the better the athlete is performing the more accurately their diet and lifestyle needs to be balanced. If not, it will show in the end results.

This is the same for a cow. A highproducing cow will need a more accurate and balanced diet than a low-producing cow. The big difference between a cow and an athlete is that the athlete can choose to go back to a normal, mediumactive lifestyle. A cow can’t. A cow is genetically programmed to produce milk.

She does that for her offspring. We may think she does it for us but the cow doesn’t know what happens with the milk after she has been in the cowshed.

We have tricked her into producing the milk as she believes that it is for her calf, but in reality we use it for totally different purposes.

So if we have managed to breed a cow that is programmed to produce a lot more milk for ‘her calf’ then that is what she wants to do because her offspring is important to keep the species alive.

So, if her diet is not of a standard that she needs then she will suffer from that in other ways than just a lower milk production as the production of milk is so important to her.

Another issue with older cows is that they have had more opportunity to get laminitis because they have been alive for longer.

When a cow suffers from laminitis, her claws are growing out of balance, therefore she ends up with the wrong weight distribution on her claws.

This is evident with a bigger and a more damaged outer claw. These cows are in need of preventative trimming.

This is where the outer claw needs to be trimmed back to the same size as the inner claw to get an even weight bearing distribution. Just one trim will not fix it forever.

The correct shaped and sized claw needs to be maintained just the same as one visit to the dentist won’t keep your teeth healthy forever.

Trimming is an ongoing procedure which is a cheap remedy to a big problem.

High-producing cows need more care, but because they produce more, they are worth it.

Our delicate dairy economy

A drop in dairy prices of 48% from February this year is now impacting on the New Zealand economy, with economists now predicting Fonterra’s $5.30 payout prediction will drop again to $4.80 if there is not a lift in product values by March of next year.

Regional economies, with a drop of $3.70 per kilogram of milk solids would face disastrous shortfalls measured in billions of dollars.

It has been said that for every dollar a dairy farmer receives, it adds three times more value by the time it goes through the community. How the experts work that out, I don’t know, but if it is true there would be an impact in the South Island dairying regions of a staggering proportions.

I recently attended a Fonterra farmer meeting and the big surprise to me was the small number of suppliers who attended the gathering, in light of the decline of dairy farmer fortunes.

It was a pity because in spite of all the bad news caused by the volatility in the world markets, I believe Fonterra is doing a lot of positive things to increase its market share throughout the world, avoiding a major reliance

solely on the Chinese market. Joint ventures in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia are turning Fonterra, since its formation from being an $11 billion earner to a $22 billion earner, making

it, I believe, the cornerstone of the New Zealand economy.

Some farmers at the meeting expressed their extreme concern at Fonterra continuing to undertake huge costly development programmes overseas when dairy farmer payouts are now suffering a serious decline.

Farmers expressed criticism at Fonterra spending some $23 million in their new Farm Source development which will include the restructuring of its RD1 stores throughout New Zealand.

Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey in explaining this development said that this Farm Source development would mean better buying power for Fonterra shareholders and suppliers, including greater fuel and electricity savings and discounts on purchases.

He explained that the current market volatility was caused by the European and the United States’ ban on exports to Russia and this was a great concern because Russia is the European community’s biggest purchaser of dairy products.

Now this European product can be diverted to other world markets, putting pressure on Fonterra’s market share. There is also currently a weak

While we are mindful of the current concerns, we know the industry has never been without financial risk or market fluctuations.

Refrigeration engineer moves to on-farm role Te Awamutu refrigeration engineer and water reticulation technician, Luke Walker, has taken up a new role for Tru-Test as DTS Area Sales Manager for the South Waikato.

Spilt milk predicted over R22 re-gassing delays Sacrificing a vat of milk could be a strong possibility for farmers with chillers using R22 refrigerant.

R22 is a particularly common refrigerant on New Zealand dairy farms and from January 2015 refrigeration wholesalers will be unable to import the gas. We know refrigerant leakage is the most common on-farm refrigeration problem and that leaks are unpredictable sometimes occurring in units and silos which are still in fairly good condition.

So the implications for farmers are these: 1. With the R22 supply diminishing, farmers can no longer rely on a quick top up with refrigerant after a repair has been completed; 2. Unexpected leaks will mean an alternative gas needs to be used. (Noting that different HFC gasses cannot be mixed together, unplanned re-gassing could be a time-consuming and timecritical process) 3. For farmers still on R22 next year and thereafter an unexpected gas

leak could result in a long wait and a good chance of wasting a morning or afternoon’s takings Why all the trouble? Firstly the regassing process requires reclaiming the remaining R22 gas. Depending on the alternative refrigerant used, some systems will need the rubber seals or components replaced if they are not compatible with the new lubricates, the liquid filter drier and the oil changed, and the system evacuated and charged with the new refrigerant. Finally the unit would need to be thoroughly tested and some parameters changed.

It’s recommended farmers take the upper hand by checking refrigeration units, keeping systems in good condition to minimise the chance of refrigerant leakage, and consider future proofing any system using R22 with a new gas retrofit. If systems are in poor repair it could be worthwhile replacing the chiller unit.

Mineral nutrition of plants — calcium

Calcium has multiple functions in plants and the list of known functions has continued to grow in the last two decades of research.

A primary function is in the structure and stability of cell walls. Calcium is largely concentrated in the middle lamella that joins cell walls together.

Much of the calcium present is strongly bound by the cell wall pectins.

Calcium is also present on the outer surface of cell membranes and within some cell components such as the endoplasmic reticulum and within storage vacuoles. Importantly there is little free calcium in the cell contents and little mobility of calcium in the sap of plants.

Cell wall structure enhanced by good calcium levels is crucial for maintaining plant structure and resilience to environmental stresses (e.g. drought, frost and general cold conditions), physical damage and attack from pests and diseases.

Good calcium levels are also crucial for recovery from such damage too, through the stimulation of protective callose production required and other mechanisms for damage response and metabolism changes. A variety of plant defence mechanisms against fungal and bacterial diseases are enhanced by good

calcium levels including selective plant cell death around points of infection.

Deficiency of calcium often has symptoms of tissue breakdown with the enzyme polygalacturonase breaking down the structural pectin. High levels of calcium in the cell walls inhibits this enzyme.

Some classic deficiency symptoms show in areas of fast growth that don’t have significant water loss (transpiration).

Examples are the growing points of many plants, bitter pit of apples, tip burn of lettuce, blackheart of celery and blossom end rot in tomatoes and melons.

The low transpiration means these plant parts don’t receive much calcium from the transport of water (in the xylem) but are dependent on calcium supply from the phloem which can be quite limited.

Foliar applied calcium can be used to directly address this requirement and generally ensuring plentiful calcium supply throughout the season is beneficial. Soil calcium levels are important for good soil structure and

for the efficient uptake of a range of minerals.

At low pH levels, calcium becomes particularly important in overcoming the effect of aluminium and manganese that can be toxic for roots. High calcium levels also generally reduce the availability of undesirable heavy metals as well as reducing their uptake and negative effect on plants.

Good soil calcium levels reduce excess sodium uptake and good plant calcium levels help plants cope with the stress of saline soil conditions.

Good calcium levels also encourage root elongation and the growth of root hairs all encouraging efficiency of nutrient and moisture uptake potential.

Mucilage on the roots is also promoted by high calcium levels and this improves the connection between roots and soil further improving nutrient uptake.

In pastures, the dicotyledons such as clover, lucerne and chicory have a higher requirement for calcium than do monocotyledons due to differences in cell wall structure.

One of the main ways of addressing calcium requirements is to lime acid soils.

The liming effect in textbooks is often described as coming from the carbonate component of lime.

This is indeed where the pH effect comes from but the supply of calcium

helps maintain good soil pH and the overall liming effect is also partly related to the calcium provided.

Improving calcium availability in a soil which already has a reasonable pH can be achieved with gypsum or small doses of finely ground limeflour (e.g. 50 to 200kg/ha).

Some of the benefits that can be achieved are a boost in earthworm activity and general soil biology as well as improving the resilience of plants.

New rules, new opportunities
