Problems with Iron and Manganese?

A hazardous substance is any product or chemical that has explosive, flammable, oxidising, toxic or corrosive properties used by many workplaces including, farmers and growers, collision repairers, hairdressers and retailers.

They are in commonly used products such as fuels and LPG, solvents, cleaning solutions and agrichemicals.

“Used safely, hazardous substances can contribute to the nation’s economic growth and prosperity, but they also pose real risks to the people working with or around them,” says WorkSafe’s Brett Murray.

“The harm from inhaling toxic vapours or having contact with some chemicals is often unseen. Workers may be unaware they are being exposed, and the effects of exposure may not be seen for many years.”

Hazardous substances are a major contributor to the estimated 600-900 deaths and 30,000 cases of serious ill health from work-related disease each year in New Zealand. This is in addition to the fatalities and immediate harm through accidents, such as fires and explosions, and unsafe use.

“It’s time this changed. The regulations bring an expectation on all those working with hazardous substances to know what those substances are, the risks they pose and how to manage those risks,” says Mr Murray.

On December 1 the rules for managing hazardous substances in the workplace are moving from the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (HSNO) to the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA). Many of the existing requirements will continue, however

there are some changes to improve the management of these substances.

“There is already legislation in place that people should be complying with, and you need to look at what has changed under the new regulations to ensure you are meeting your obligations to protect workers.

“If you are following the current rules, you may only need to do a few things differently. Now is the ideal time to review your management of hazardous substances and ensure you are doing your duty to protect people from harm.”

Ryegrasses offer dual solution High performance ryegrasses bred through an innovative and award-winning forage improvement programme are making their mark across the country.

The new ryegrasses provided by Germinal New Zealand, are offering animal performance and environmental benefits to farmers with their Aber High Sugar Grass.

Bred at the Institute of Biological Environmental and Rural Science, the ryegrasses contain significantly higher levels of sugar, or water-soluble carbohydrates, than conventional ryegrasses.

This has been verified by independent NZ trials, where data is showing a significant increase in the sugar content of the new ryegrasses compared with many other conventional counterparts.

Aber HSGs also offer a higher metabolisable energy content than standard diploid ryegrasses.

Germinal’s trials and product development manager, Sarah Gard, says higher sugar means more energy, and this is significant in the way it helps ruminant livestock improve their conversion of grass protein into meat and milk.

“Our grasses create a better balance of energy and protein in the rumen, allowing the microbes responsible for the breakdown of forage to operate more efficiently, so more protein is converted to milk and meat, and less is excreted into the environment.

“Independent NZ data has shown a 10 per cent increase in autumn milk solids from cows fed Aber HSG. A Southland based trial run by Abacus Bio demonstrated lambs grazing Aber

HSG finished 17 per cent faster and 19 per cent heavier than lambs grazing a standard NZ ryegrass.

“Reducing the amount of nitrogen that is excreted means less impact on the environment, specifically in terms of a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, nitrous oxide and ammonia.”

She says in New Zealand, the release of methane gas from ruminants amounts to one-third of greenhouse gas emissions.

“NZ data has shown a nine per cent reduction in methane emissions from sheep fed on the Aber HSG variety AberMagic when compared to a conventional diploid variety.

Mawera Karetai is a lecturer of business strategy, a hunter of pest animals and birds, and teaches people to cook with wild foods available around the country as a healthy food option.

“H

unting meat is a big part of my life. My dad was a hunter and I grew up looking at pest species such as hare and turkey as healthy food sources,” says Mawera.

“As part of my master’s degree I did a study on opossums and wallabies. It is sad that as a society we look at pests animals as an evil demonic thing to kill at all costs, when in actual fact they are a serious source of nutrition.

“My favourite food is wallaby meat — it is seriously good.

“We have the little dama wallaby and the other is the red neck. Those are two of twelve species that were liberated into New Zealand in the late 1800s and early 1900s by Governor Grey through the Climatisation Society. They were the

two types to survive on the mainland.”

Mawera and her husband Dave Barrett hunt pest animals including peacock, turkey, rabbit, goat, pig and deer, and she enjoys feeding her family food that they have got some control over.

“I know that the animal was running around happy and healthy in the bush — it died without suffering when it became food for my family. There is a healthy feeling about complete engagement with your food source.

“Our children’s favourite food is peacock fingers. You take the breast off and fillet the meat from the outside connective tissue. You end up with really soft delicate meat.”

They shoot a least 100 peacocks a year on farms. Turkeys are also a pest

food. Every five peacocks or turkeys eat as much grass in a day as one sheep.

“Dave came from Canada and had always hunted so he provides our meat and we haven’t brought any in 12 years.

We got into peacock hunting when we heard the regional council was poisoning them to control the population.

“We asked them to let us manage the population and use them as food. One farm was contending with 3,000 birds and this caused major damage.”

The couple sell the bird feathers across the country and overseas as a way to ensure nothing is wasted.

“We clean the feathers thoroughly and have never been declined with an inspection.

“They do arrow fletching in Germany so we send quill feathers, and in America the turkey tail feathers are used for Native Indian headdresses as that is their endemic species and our feathers were used in the Hobbit movie for the hand made arrows.”

Feathers are also used for quill pens and kapa haka costumes.

“Goat is a big staple in our family along with peacock, and hare. Rabbit are also beautiful — especially in winter with the grass so green — the meat is sweet.

“We pluck the opossums and the meat goes to pig farms as food to grow the pork — it is more important for the pigs to eat them than us.”

Mawera says wallabies can be destructive because they graze the grass and any little shoots, killing the pasture.

“There has been a spread in the wallaby population because they weren’t

with pigs Breeding pigs has become a part of life for Angela Nilsson and her husband Matt on their four-and-a-half acre lifestyle block.

“I

grew up on dairy farms and we moved every couple of years as my dad was a share milker and I would help him on the farm and milking the cows,” says Angela.

“When I left school I worked in the Fonterra factory making cheese and milk powder. It was really interesting to see where the milk went after it left the farm and how things work. I only left because I married and we had our three children and it was too hard to do night shift.”

Matt and Angela have been on their block for a year now, and got into

breeding Saddleback and Duroc pigs as a way to utilise their property.

“When I was young we had pigs and would feed them the excess milk but I was actually terrified of them back then.

“When we moved here there was a pig sty there so we decided to use it. I started off with seven piglets and raised them to sell and then I got into mumma pigs which are my Saddlebacks and that is how I started breeding.”

Angela kept one of the piglets from the first lot and he bred with one of the sows. “We have three mothers now and one boar and we sell their litters at spit

pig size. They are ideal for functions like weddings, birthdays or funerals.

“When you are raising piglets a big key to success is warmth and cleanliness.

I always check their water and wash out their housing and containers every second day.

“I collect food scraps for the mothers and make sure they get lots of vegetables and we give them maize kernels as well.”

Angela says the mothers do all the work for the piglets until they are eight weeks old.

“As the mothers have all been hand raised from babies they are really friendly. I can go and pick the piglets up and check them.

“Changing the hay is also important.

We often have a heat light metre off the ground that the piglets can huddle under in the daytime to keep warm if they want.

“Piglets are easy to care for after they reach eight weeks old. They have pellets, regular house scraps and some milk or milk powder. I buy a ton of expired longlife cream in one litre containers and they get a litre each a day.

“Our pigs are mostly free range — they have their houses and go onto the grass in the day. If they can get the right amount of calcium and protein they won’t root up the ground. Sometimes you will get the odd one that destroys a paddock so we get the vet to come with anaesthetic and ring their noses to stop them.

“They are ultimately easy, sometimes they can get pneumonia particularly with the weather like last season but with shelter, warmth, heaps of hay and good diet, I haven’t had any trouble.”

Angela says pigs are intelligent and can be very friendly.

“You can toilet train them and they can sleep inside — they are basically like little dogs and will follow you. We

had a pig named Woof. He was brought up with some dogs and he followed the children everywhere until he got too big and had to go to the freezer.

“It is important to us to feed the family off our land so every now and then a friendly animal has to go. We also have two nurse cows — one is a snowball White Galloway and we have chickens, ducks and goats.

“We are all close where we live and our neighbours also graze our animals

for us. We do exchanges — this year I helped her with calving so she knows what to do next year. Lifestyle block life can really work positively as a community. One of the girls in our area started up a Facebook page for our road and we can utilise the resources such as if someone is getting a farrier

out for their horse we can plan for the same time.

“You can be self sufficient and put everything in the freezer and know where your food came from. I do my own eggs and veggies — we still buy milk as I haven’t got to milking the cow yet but it could come.”

Toward a career in forestry

Pauline Edge is studying Forest Management and is in her second year at Toi-Ohomai Institute of Technology in Rotorua.

P

auline is the mother of four children and was awarded the Mary Sutherland scholarship through the New Zealand Institute of Forestry Foundation.

“I grew up in the city but my grandparents lived on a sheep farm in Napier and I visited them often. I would go with my grandfather and help him around the farm with chores like spraying, fencing and moving the stock,” says Pauline.

“I really enjoyed the life and I love being outdoors and working amongst nature.”

When Pauline’s youngest child was turning five years old she decided it was time to find a career.

“I ended up looking at forestry as I have many family members and friends working in the industry and I have learnt a lot about forestry over time and hearing what they do helped me decide on my career path.

“I started with completing a course in chainsaw operating and I really enjoyed learning all the different types of forestry operations that go on. I then decided to study management in the industry.

“Forestry is important to me not just because of the amount of employment available but the healthy growing of trees means more volume of wood harvested, and that brings in more export revenue for the country.” Pauline says pine trees are generally sprayed three times for

needle disease before the age of 15 years to keep them healthy.

“Needle disease can affect young pines. The mature trees are harvested at around 25 years of age and most forests are replanted immediately keeping the tree crops sustainable.

“I had three month’s work experience through the course with a crew in the forest and was responsible for log marking — you use spray cans and mark the logs with dots where the chainsaw guys need to come and chop the stems into logs ready for the trucks.

We measure the lengths and get the diameter correct for logs to go in similar piles. We also look for deviations in the stem as that determines the different log grades.

“Once we are done the loader drivers stack the log piles on the trucks at the skid.There is a lot of skill for both the loader and truck drivers.

“Through my work experience with Forest Distribution Ltd I also gained knowledge of communicating with RT’s and giving the drivers instructions for the day — where to go, what grades to collect and where to take them. We all work as a team and we also help drivers when they are stuck or broken down.

“Working in forestry is the right career choice for me. I am looking forward to advancing and with all farming/agricultural industry working together, the country’s exports can only get stronger. I believe we have a great understanding of each other.”

Pauline says winning the Mary Sutherland scholarship was an honour and something she is very grateful to the NZIF for.

Safe or not safe?

From my perspective the only safe phosphate on our planet ever, was guano. When these deposits were depleted the ‘phosphate companies’ moved to Reactive Phosphate Rock (RPR).

Guano contained no heavy metals and was full of macro nutrients and trace elements. This was a beautiful product, keeping soils and animals and people fit and healthy.

When the Nauru, Banaba and Christmas Island deposits were depleted, the British Phosphate Company organised the import of phosphate rock out of Morocco in to both Australia and New Zealand.

Phosphate rock is full of heavy metals; uranium, lead, mercury, fluorine, arsenic

and cadmium — it has no trace elements but has the micro minerals phosphate and calcium.

I find it hard to get my head around how RPR is certified, and I ask, how is it ‘reactive’? I know that in the making of super phosphate, the phosphate rock is blended with either phosphoric acid or sulphuric acid to make soluble enough to be taken up by plants. around 1953, only one percent of the phosphate rock is actually taken up by the plants with the eight percent balance of the phosphate going directly into the environment or locking up in the aluminium and clay particles of the soil.

The acidic nature of super phosphate is impacting on the microbial life of the soil, creating erosion and acidity. The whole point about farming is to look after your soil. When you get that soil healthy the whole farm is going to be healthy, along with productivity!

Some organic farmers use RPR on their pastures, but I still want to know how it becomes ‘reactive’. You could maybe lower the pH of the soil, but that would create more acidity and more problems.

When I decided to use natural volcanic rock dust as a fertiliser I came up with all sorts of ideas to make the rock dust reactive. I even tried some of the ideas, but there was no reaction — nothing. However, quite by chance I blended together rock dust and our Oceans100 liquid fertiliser — still no activity. I needed two more products in combination with the rock dust and Oceans100, and bingo, 48 hours later I had a steaming, living, multi-mineral, microbial rich, environmentally friendly fertiliser ready for production.

The beauty of this product and all the other products we produce is that the ingredients all come out of the environment; they are part of the environment and part of your farm, unlike chemical fertilisers, sprays and drenches which are all artificially produced.

As I have always said, farming is a natural process. All the materials we use on the land must

Consultation launched for biosecurity Beef + Lamb New Zealand, in conjunction with DairyNZ and Deer Industry New Zealand, is launching consultation on a proposal to sign a Government Industry Agreement for Biosecurity Readiness and Response Deed.

Information packs outlining the proposal are due to arrive in farmers’ mailboxes and the consultation officially got underway from October 31.

Sam McIvor, chief executive of B+LNZ, said the GIA was about working together to protect farmers from exotic pests and diseases.

“Farmers consistently tell us that biosecurity risks are among the biggest risks we face as an industry.

“Currently, when hard decisions are being made about how New Zealand prepares to respond to an exotic pest or disease incursion and, more importantly, what to do during an actual response — we are ‘in the room’ and consulted, but it is the Government that makes all the final decisions.

“Signing the GIA would give sheep and beef farmers, through B+LNZ, a seat at the biosecurity decision-making table. Alongside other GIA Signatories, we would have more direct influence on biosecurity preparedness and response decision making.

“There are costs associated with signing the GIA, because it means agreeing to contribute to readiness and response costs. The level of these contributions would depend on the significance of the pest or disease to the sheep and beef sector.

“Importantly, our sector could also choose to set a funding limit as part of a GIA Operational Agreement. We think that the benefits of signing the GIA, with increased certainty and control over our own biosecurity destiny, justifies potential costs. We would be better prepared, have a pre-agreed set of minimum readiness and response commitments between

industry and government, and agreed limits on our industry’s potential cost-share for readiness and response activities.

“If we don’t sign the GIA, we will have much less influence over the decisions that affect our sector.”

Mr McIvor said the Government could also use powers under the Biosecurity Act 1993 to recover costs from industries that benefit from a response even if they have not signed the GIA. “That would be a poor outcome for our sector and we would lose the opportunity to work together with government and other industries under the GIA to manage fundamental risks to all livestock farmers.

“It is vital farmers have their say on this important matter.”

So, you’ve managed to become the one relative in the entire extended clan who happens to run a successful farm, or who has retreated from the big city to enjoy the lifestyle block ‘good life’.

The rural idyll — complete with lots of hard work, of course — looks pretty appealing to suburban siblings as the holidays roll around, and your position amidst the green hills or near the coast suddenly becomes a magnet for family and friends.

If you’re generous and game enough to play host to all those cousins, aunties, uncles, kids and grandkids (not to mention old university mates, work buddies and sports’ team acquaintances) who ‘were just in the area’ over Christmas and New Years, then we salute you. But there are a few things to know which will make preparing for the coming ‘tent city’ that little bit easier.

First, tell them what to expect. A holiday in the country is not the RitzCarlton, and that’s a big part of its appeal. Be straight up and honest about the need for your rellys to bring plenty of insect repellent, and all the gear to keep their little camp site self sufficient.

Running countless cables from the barn, house and garage for

fridges, xboxes, televisions and hair straighteners isn’t really camping, is it? If you’re playing host while summer farming chores are still ongoing, it’s also good to gently remind the folks that the concept of a ‘holiday’ is a bit blurry in the agricultural sector.

And that a farm comes with hazards for the unwary. That being said, there’s something great about helping teach the young ones just where their breakfast eggs and milk come from.

The hard part of hosting your family and friends out in the country is not

becoming like John Cleese’s mad hotelier Basil Fawlty.

There’s such a thing as being a gracious host, but don’t try to be a chef, butler, valet and tour guide as well.

Expect your guests to pitch in and they’ll likely be happy to help.

Remember that sometimes a gentle reminder that you can’t take hour long showers on tank water in summer goes a long way.

That a bit of help around the barbie and the beer fridge goes along way toward securing next year’s hearty welcome.

Enjoy arts, music, the landscape and our rich heritage.

Improving joints (Part 3) Back in 2011 there was some interesting emerging research that suggested the traditional osteoarthritis supplements were perhaps targeting the wrong ingredient. Most supplements were heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate with a smaller amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS).

As a result of this research I completely reformulated my Bettaflex joint supplement. I did two things.

Firstly I increased CS to 380mg per capsule and secondly added a 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. This gave a maintenance dose of 760mg of CS. Almost immediately clients reported better results on the new formulation.

These results were increased where we added 1-2 months on a double dose (4 capsules daily) which delivered over 1500mg of CS. Over the last few years there has been still more quality research into the benefits of CS with knee osteoarthritis.

Just last year a study compared 1,200mg of chondroitin sulphate 1,200mg with a leading COX-2 selective anti-inflammatory arthritis medication. The study was over two years and used MRI to establish the

benefits. This was a high quality double-blind placebo controlled trial involving 200 people over 24 months. It concluded that while both groups had similar improvements in comfort, MRI analysis showed the CS group had much greater reduction in cartilage loss.

This finding was consistent with five other studies looking at the benefits of CS for knee OA. While most of the studies have been with knee OA, I have found that most joints affected

by OA can be helped.

While such studies are useful really it is all about what happens to an individual with osteoarthritis. This is why I prefer to create a personalised programme which takes many factors like age, weight, medications, diet and exercise into consideration. Please contact me for further information.

New chair for Farm Environment Trust

Ashburton farmer Joanne van Polanen was recently appointed the new chair of the New Zealand Farm Environment Trust. The trust runs the Ballance Farm Environment Awards.

Mrs van Polanen said the organisation is looking forward to working with the new government, showcasing the efforts that farmers and growers are making to balance the needs of the environment, animals, plants and people.

“The trust is uniquely placed to work across the primary sector to promote farming excellent with other farmers and growers.

“Increasingly, farmers and growers are reframing environmental issues as opportunities.

“We would like to see New Zealand’s farmers and growers recognised as global leaders in the stewardship of land and water.”

She said the trust’s awards have identified a strong cohort of regional and national farming leaders who exemplify the very best in profitable and sustainable farming practices.

“These are the people who are taking farming to the next level, showcasing what ‘future-ready’ farming really looks like. These are people who are ready and proud to welcome consumers onto their farms.”

The Ministry for Primary Industries has received an application to approve the use of the Rabbit Haemorrhagic Virus Disease RHDV1–K5 for pest rabbit management nationwide.

RHDV (Czech strain) already exists in New Zealand after it was introduced in 1997. This 2017 application is for a Korean strain that isn’t currently found here.

MPI has notified the application under the Agricultural Compound Veterinary and Medicines Act (ACVM), and will consider any submissions before making any decision on the data that has been submitted in support of the registration.

“We are keen to hear from the public, including pet owners. The consultation closes on December 14, 2017,” says MPI’s Allan Kinsella.

“We will consider benefits of the release to the agricultural sector, as well as identification and management of risks to animal welfare, agricultural impacts, trade and public health matters associated with the virus. This will include consideration of the risks posed to non-target animals such as pet rabbits.

“The strain of RHDV that already exists in New Zealand has a vaccine which is being used to protect against the new strain in other countries. As part of MPI’s assessment we will be considering evidence of protection against the new strain.”

Breeding bulls Mycoplasma bovis free LIC has confirmed its artificial breeding bulls are free from the Mycoplasma bovis cattle disease.

As a farmer-owned co-operative and the largest artificial breeding company in New Zealand, more than three out of four cows grazing on New Zealand dairy farms are sired by an LIC bull.

Although confident the disease was not present in its bulls, the co-op announced in September it would test for the disease to provide its farmers with greater peace of mind through the dairy mating season.

“We have now completed the testing and I am pleased to confirm that all LIC bulls have received negative test results with no sign of Mycoplasma bovis,” chief scientist Richard Spelman said.

“The results are as we expected and in line with the MPI investigation which indicates the infection was limited to a few herds within NZ. “We are pleased to provide our farmers with the confirmation and greater peace of mind for the mating season which is underway on farms right now.”

Yesterday marked the busiest day of that season for LIC, with 117,000 straws of fresh semen collected, processed and dispatched to AB techs all over the country from its bull farm, collection and laboratory facilities outside of Hamilton.

A total of 4.6 million straws of fresh semen will have been dispatched

by Christmas.

Red meat sector welcomes TPP deal Beef and Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association welcome the announcement a deal has been struck to move ahead with the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, which is now called the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.

“The CPTPP will deliver significant gains to the sector. New Zealand’s regions are hugely reliant on revenue flowing as a result of exports. Trade is the lifeblood for our sector, which in turn creates jobs and supports communities around New Zealand,” says chief executive of B+LNZ, Sam McIvor.

“More than 90 per cent of New Zealand’s sheepmeat and 80 per cent of our beef production is exported. These exports support around 60,000 jobs on farms and in processing companies, and a further 20,000 jobs in supplying

sectors. “This deal simultaneously opens up multiple markets in Japan, Mexico, Peru and Canada and puts us on a level playing field with other major red meat exporters in the Asia Pacific region, such as Australia and the European Union.”

Tim Ritchie, chief executive of the MIA says since Australia’s 2015 trade agreement with Japan, their beef exports to Japan have increased by $1 billion, while New Zealand’s have fallen by $30 million.

growing, but we have lost significant market share. The situation got tougher in August when Japan imposed a WTO safeguard on frozen beef, raising its tariff on New Zealand exports from 38.5 per cent to 50 per cent, while Australia only faces a tariff of 22 per cent. Since the safeguard was applied, our frozen beef exports to Japan have fallen by 70 per cent.”

The agreement captures all of the market access gains of the previous TPP agreement, however, it also addresses some of the concerns of New Zealanders around TPP — the preservation of PHARMC, foreign ownership of land and housing, and freedom to regulate for our own environmental protection.

The sector is also celebrating the release of a WTO Appellate Body report which upholds the initial findings of the New Zealand-led dispute against Indonesia on a range of agricultural non-tariff barriers. Mr Ritchie says these barriers have impacted on New Zealand beef exports to Indonesia and have contributed to a decline of over 80 per cent since 2010 — costing the sector an estimated $1 billion in lost trade.

Small stature, big results

Even the smallest lifestyle block demands something more than just a traditional lawn mower, which is why so many owners of the classic ‘few acres in the country’ opt for a powerful ride-on to tame the grass.

But there are other chores which abound on the land, especially if you’re taking the plunge into running a small amount of stock, or if your land is more wild and rugged than you’d like.

That’s when the allure of joining the big boys and buying a real farm tractor becomes appealing.

But many lifestyle block owners will freely admit that such an investment is a bit beyond what’s truly necessary. A big tractor can be a daunting machine to learn to drive especially if you’re coming to the ‘hot seat’ later in life.

Now, however, there’s a happy medium which may just tick all the boxes. The smallest tractor in New Zealand is also, paradoxically, the beefiest lawn tractor, and it comes in any colour you like so long as it’s orange.

Return of the Century

The recent Tokyo Motor Show proved two facts — that Japanese design is setting off in a bold new direction, and that electric and hybrid powertrains are here to stay. But the star of the show didn’t wear the badge of any Japanese marque you’re likely to have heard of.

That, in itself is bizarre, because it is without a doubt the most prestigious product Toyota have ever made. While their robotic production lines can put together a Yaris in minutes, this car is hand assembled over nine days. The bumper alone is polished for 11 hours by a man who would, in the 1600s, have crafted samurai swords.

A fleet of just five are owned by the Imperial House of Japan, and you have to be invited to an exclusive club to be allowed to own one. Nevertheless, the 2018 Century is deliberately understated — an anti-Lamborghini

which is silent, unobtrusive, luxurious, silky smooth, and utterly on a par with Rolls Royce, Bentley and Maybach. It’s a classic tuxedo in a world of sports jackets and jeans. Out of time, but never out of place.

Only three design changes have defined the Century since 1967. It’s the opposite of ostentatious, and has a reputation as the vehicle for the conservative, successful — but never boastful or vulgar — Japanese VIP. Resembling a toned-down Lincoln town car crossed with a big 1980s era Mercedes, the Century now comes with

a 4.3 litre Lexus V8 with an additional electric motor for utterly silent power.

The outgoing edition was the one and only Toyota to be fitted with a V12. This was in fact two of Toyota’s coveted 1JZ engines joined together. It was tuned not for speed, however, but to move all three tons of the Century in refined silence, producing over 400Nm of torque at just 1200 rpm.

Most of us will never see a Century, let alone buy one. But its very existence raises a question. Many people think

that the Hilux and Land Cruiser both peaked with previous incarnations. They, like the Century, were made by Toyota to achieve a singular purpose, and they did so with balance and sharpness.

Wouldn’t you love to see what could be achieved if Toyota put the Century team on designing an ultimate, immutable, timeless off-road ute?

It might cost a lot, but it would never, ever break down. And, as an added bonus, the Emperor of Japan could enjoy some off-roading on the weekends.

Steering group to tackle velvetleaf

A steering group that aims to ensure a coordinated response to eradicate velvetleaf in the Waikato region is urging farmers and rural contractors to clean all machinery before movement.

The group comprises representatives of Waikato Regional Council, Federated Farmers — Waikato, DairyNZ, the Rural Agricultural Contractors Association, PGG Wrightson, Foundation for Arable Research, Pioneer Seeds, AgResearch, and Farmlands.

Considered one of the world’s worst cropping weeds, velvetleaf has been found growing on farms in the MatamataPiako, Te Awamutu and north Waikato areas of the Waikato region. It has spread to properties via infested fodder beet seeds imported from overseas, the distribution of infested maize crops, and maize silage and unclean machinery.

Waikato Regional Council’s biosecurity pest plants team leader Darion Embling said landowners and farm contractors need to be vigilant.

“Machinery and vehicle movements aren’t the only culprits responsible for the spread of pests, but they do pose a very high risk.

“Last year we were able to conclusively link velvetleaf infestations on some properties to the movement of unclean machinery, which is why good machine hygiene practices are so important. That’s why we’ve set up this steering group — to ensure we can educate operators throughout the ag industry that biosecurity starts at the farm gate.”

Cleaning machinery is a big part of that — it will ensure plant or soil contamination that might be harbouring pests, weeds or seeds is removed before entering the next property. Advice on machine hygiene is available at

waikatoregion.govt.nz/biosecurity. “We now have 37 properties in the region which have had confirmed infestations of velvetleaf — ranging from a handful of plants to hundreds, even thousands, and we know the seeds can remain dormant for up to 60 years,” said Mr Embling.

“We are working closely with farm managers, landowners and rural contractors to manage the risks, and
