Incumbent directors John Monaghan and David MacLeod have been reelected and will be joined by new director Leonie Guiney.

Leonie lives and farms near Fairlie and is the director of four dairy farming companies. She has previous experience as a consulting officer, dairy production lecturer and has studied overseas co-operatives in the Netherlands and Ireland.

Leonie was also the 2014 winner of the low-input Dairy Business of the Year.

Shareholders Murray Holdaway and Philip Wilson were elected unopposed as members of the Directors’ Remuneration Committee. Wilson James joins the Shareholders’ Council.

Fonterra shareholders used their annual meeting to raise concerns over the reduced 2015 milk payout, the dairy giant’s forecasting and the way the milk price is set.

The forecast milk price it pays farmers was slashed in September from $6 per kilogram of milk solids to $5.30/kg MS plus an additional dividend payment of 25–35c/kg MS. It comes on the back of a record $8.50 total payout last season.

In his exit speech, former director Jim van der Poel acknowledged shareholder concerns, by saying the dairy exporter had to set the benchmark for a competitive farmgate milk price.

He said it was important that Fonterra set the lead on payouts, which its competitors would then have to keep up with.

“This is not just good for our farmer shareholders but also good for New Zealand,” he said. “New Zealand milk has to be seen as a premium product and valued as such because the milk price has such a flow on in rural communities.”

High beef prices good for kiwi farmers

High international beef prices are an almost perfect storm for kiwi producers, according to Federated Farmers.

The organisation’s Beef and Fibre chairman Rick Powdrell says droughts in United States and Australia have decimated herd numbers and it may take years for stock levels to recover.

The shortage of available stock is expected to take years to fix, meaning the current high prices are likely to be around for a significant period.

“You can almost call it a perfect storm,” says Mr Powdrell. “Our members are pretty buoyant about it.”

The American droughts from 2010 to 2012 forced producers to cut stock numbers to cope with a reduced amount of feed. But consumer demand for the product remained high, meaning prices rose in the world’s largest beef market when production was low.

That opened up opportunities for New Zealand exporters.

It also means less competition for Kiwi producers in lucrative Asian markets, such as China.

That all happened when conditions in New Zealand — in most areas at least — remained reasonably good.

Mr Powdrell says current prices are unlikely to be a flash in the pan. “The long-term outlook is that it will take time for cattle numbers to rebuild.

That would be the hope.

“All the indicators are that prices should remain high for the foreseeable future.”

Despite the public perception, Mr Powdrell says beef farmers are not rolling in money. “A lot of them are repaying debt. They’ve been through some pretty tough times. They’re also doing some repairs, maintenance and plant upgrades. They’re all things they can’t do when prices are low.”

NUFFIELD scholar plans to GIVE BACK

Nuffield Scholar Satwant Singh has always enjoyed farming and spending time amongst farmers.

S

atwant’s introduction to the dairy industry began at an early age as she was raised on the family dairy farm. Originally her great-grandfather and family were market gardeners, south of Auckland. The family then bought their Gordonton dairy farm in 1970. The 90ha farm is run by Satwant’s parents as a family farm, milking 230 Friesian cows.

During her studies at the University of Waikato, Satwant said initially like many university students, her goal was to graduate and gain employment in the city. Satwant has a Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours (majoring in Marketing and Human Resources) and a Graduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Waikato. However, in her last year of university Satwant began working for Fonterra and has continued her career there.

“I was studying part time and working full time as a service specialist for Fonterra, which is the 0800 number farmers call for anything to do with Fonterra,” said Satwant.

She joined the team when Fonterra opened its first regional hub in Waikato.

Satwant said this was a great starting point for her dairy career.

“I got to help farmers from across the country first-hand with their issues or questions about Fonterra through a typical season.

“Also the role provided me with exposure to many parts of Fonterra because being on the phones is a pivotal role for all communications.”

After two years in this role, Satwant moved on to become an area manager in Morrinsville.

She said this position allowed her to meet some great people and

passionate family farmers with strong community involvements.

“I met lots of different farmers at different stages of their farming careers and with different goals and ambitions.”

“I worked with farmers through some good and tough financial years,” said Satwant. “It was a great opportunity to be able to work and help farmers with

their businesses.” In 2012 Satwant was approached for her current role as originator for Fonterra Commodity Risk and Trading, based in Auckland.

“My role consists of developing and implementing price risk management tools for farmers and New Zealand domestic customers,” she said. One of Satwant’s achievements is the

“Fonterra is a big company that has been created and owned by our dairy farmers, including my own family,” said Satwant.

“Working here has opened doors and offered me some great opportunities to grow and experience.

“It’s kind of like working for your family because what I am doing is contributing and supporting all dairy farmers.”

Satwant was surprised and overwhelmed to find out she was recently selected as a Nuffield Scholar.

“I am really excited and look forward to the new learning’s and networks it will provide,” she said.

“It’s such a great privilege to have been given this opportunity to help me develop as a person, but also to be able to give back to the rural community.”

As a Nuffield Scholar, Satwant would like to research into understanding farmer’s stresses and financial pressure with a focus on price risk management.

“As we move forward, our farming businesses become more complicated as the environment becomes more volatile,” she said.

“It is important that farmers have a strong understanding of their business’s financial and overall health to ensure we are resilient to withstand changes.”

Satwant has kept close ties to the family dairy farm. Although she and her husband, Sunil Krishna, live in Auckland, they can both be found working on the farm during weekends.

“No matter what I do, I feel at home when I’m farming,” said Satwant.

Drive south from Auckland, leaving the Bombay Hills behind, and as the gentle oxbow curve of the Waikato river falls away on your right past Meremere, the landscape opens up on your left, fragmented into a profusion of glittering pools and shaggy, manuka-dotted islets.

least of which is the immense capacity of this 7,290 hectare wetland to mitigate flooding.

And while introduced species are actively discouraged by the custodians of the Whangamarino Wetland — the Department of Conservation, and Fish and Game — this area has become a favoured haunt of duck hunters during the annual season, as well as a destination for anglers, who have free access to the catfish and carp which DOC would ideally banish from the waters of the wetland.

Part of the annual license fee paid by waterfowl hunters goes to restoring and maintaining areas like this around the country, because beyond being a habitat for the ducks which are a hunter’s prey, the Whangamarino is also home to a staggering array of native species, some critically endangered.

Above, that means native birdlife — one in five of New Zealand’s Australasian bitterns live here, as do

Being a custodian of the Whangamarino Wetland can be gruelling work — but it’s very rewarding brought here by English colonists sometimes with good intentions but no grasp of ecological cascade effects.

The Department of Conservation manages the Whangamarino Wetland from its Te Rapa Field Base, in Hamilton and has a long-term plan in place to ensure the survival of native species and the protection of this internationally recognised natural site.

Whangamarino is one of three wetland sites in New Zealand managed as part of DOC’s Arawai Kakariki National Wetland Programme.

Through this programme DOC has been able to work towards managing the threats within the wetland and carry out research to better understand the catchment issues which impact on the Whangamarino wetland. Controlling weeds, managing pests and extending protective fencing around the wetland are all on-going projects. For example, two nasty weeds have emerged as a serious threat to Whangamarino Wetland and so each year DOC staff and contractors spend over 300 hours on weed surveillance and controlling the invasive weeds like Yellow Flag Iris and Alligator weed which threaten the native wetland vegetation, Although the Whangamarino Wetland can never be restored to its original state, there are a number of different agencies all playing their parts in the management of Waikato’s wetlands, including Whangamarino. In 2011, the Waikato District Lakes and Freshwater Wetlands Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Waikato Regional Council, the Department of Conservation,

Microflora proliferates on peat Auckland/Waikato Fish and Game Council, Waikato-Tainui, and Waikato District Council.

The purpose of this is: To recognise the values of the freshwater lakes and wetlands of the Waikato district, and to protect, enhance and restore these through alignment of our activities when working with communities, landowners, tangata whenua and interested parties.

DOC will continue working collaboratively with other agencies within the wetland and in the wider catchment.

For instance, since 2007, DOC and private landowners have worked together to fence over 28km, resulting in a significant decline in the number of domestic stock accessing the wetland.

Stock cause damage to the wetland by grazing and trampling sensitive plants, opening up sites for weed invasion and adding unwanted nutrients.

And aside from its benefits to both farming and biodiversity, the Whangamarino wetland is quite simply a place of surprising, ever-changing natural beauty.

SPOTLIGHT ON The Rose Town of New Zealand

Nestled in the heart of the Waikato, amidst a wide valley of peat lake and fertile farmland, is New Zealand’s Rose Town — Te Awamutu.

Home to 12,000 people, the town services a large rural community and its rich and diverse history has given rise to a unique range of visitor attractions.

Te Awamutu, meaning End of the Navigable River, is at the centre of bush clad ranges and close to the extinct Kakepuku and Pirongia volcanoes.

The nearby Maungatautari, another extinct volcanic cone, is now the site of New Zealand’s largest ecological restoration project.

The town is in the Waipa District and lies close to a tributary of the Waipa River. It’s gently undulating landscape is in a fertile basin, characterised by dairy and dairy support based agriculture, with sheep and beef farming on the outer fringes.

The thriving agricultural sector is the backbone of the district, with Te Awamutu township providing a large service centre for the outlying rural community and also a large dairy factory. However, smaller horticulture and viticulture ventures also flourish

in the region. The district’s natural attributes have created an abundance of recreational opportunities, such as Maungatautari Ecological Island Reserve and Pirongia Mountain. Bush walks for day visitors or more serious treks for the experienced trampers are popular, as are the opportunities to see many forms of native birds, animals and fauna in this beautiful region.

Te Awamutu is often referred to as ‘The Rose Town of New Zealand’ because of its elaborate rose gardens.

It offers a unique small town shopping experience, with a variety of cultural activities, and eating out is a pleasant experience, with restaurants within a short walk of the town centre.

The rugby grounds, polo field, equestrian centre, swimming centre and velodrome, mean that the town is also highly geared to cater for sports people and spectators.

It is located on one of New Zealand’s major tourists routes, on SH3, and is mentioned in the Split Enz song Haul

Holiday highways beckon

With summer sunshine replacing winter rain, many folks are turning their attention to holiday preparations this spring, gearing up for a journey to scenic, seaside vacation spots.

It’s the same for the array of pumps, plumbing and gas lines fitted to most recreational vehicles. With extensive fresh water and wastewater piping, there’s a whole lot to check, with nasty results if a fault goes unseen. Gas powers everything from stoves to fridges

to water heaters in RVs and caravans, so any work on this sub-system should be appraised by a qualified gas fitter.

Taking the time now to make sure your ‘ship of the highway’ is ship-shape will mean a better holiday experience for the whole family this summer.

Transmission Problems??

Call us for free friendly adviCe Campers, RVs and caravans are all popular choices for holidaymakers, as evidenced by LTSA figures which show a growing number of Kiwis opting to get out from under canvas and slip behind the wheel of something more substantial. And while the planet-spanning master plan of the boys from Dearborn may mean the end of the Falcon badge downunder, there are surprises in the works from Ford to rival the announcement of Mustangs on Kiwi forecourts in the not-too-distant future.

So until the throaty V8 rumble of the sixth-gen ‘Stang is heard on Waikato roads, please consider exhibit A — a three-door hatch so hot that it’s positively incandescent. Especially in the fire-engine red trim we got to see up close and in the flesh. This is the 2014 Fiesta ST, a car which was marketed with its own brand of hot sauce on its arrival to these shores, and which throws its diminutive weight around with such precision and verve that older petrolheads can be heard whispering the words ‘Escort Cosworth’ in hushed tones after a quick spin.

Not that the mad, fun little Fiesta ST shares a lot in common with the raucous, rally-bred ‘Esky’ — this is a more sophisticated beast. But consider.

The roadgoing 1992 Escort Cosworth weighed 1,320 kilos and packed 168 kilowatts of power. The ST, on the other hand, is packed with far more luxury, safety and technical gadgetry, yet only

weighs 1,163 kilos. And under the hood, a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine kicks out 134kW — but also 240Nm of torque.

That means a lighter, more nimble vehicle than any other small Ford of recent memory — but also the firepower to outgun many other top euro-hatches.

No wonder, when the ST was engineered in Cologne, Germany, and fettled in Belgium before being unleashed locally.

You may think that the comparison between the now-legendary Cosworth and a variant of the Fiesta is heretical, but that sense of slightly unhinged yet fully planted fun is right there, making this a worthy successor to the whaletailed road rocket of yore.

A proper six speed manual transmission rewards driving acumen with satisfying feedback, making this a cut above the average superheated shopping trolley hatch.

Those lamenting the end of the Falcon legend should take heart. There are still dedicated petrolheads calling the shots at Ford — enough to get this smile-inducing little firecracker onto the forecourts here in New Zealand.

It’s evidence enough to make those who think small cars can’t be fun to think again.

What lies beneath?

Building is essentially a task that begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home are vital.

But foundations also need to be revisited, as in the case of some rural buildings in Waikato, that may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away, causing them to fail.

If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an a examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot.

Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house.

Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving, or may be continuing to move — this all depends on the cause.

If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result.

This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to re-align the house on this new foundation.

To establish if there’s a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start.

Repiling is a major job and different repilers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access under the house and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to make plans in advance.

Repiling of course opens a lot of opportunities to do other things to a house, other than internal alterations.

The house can even be moved, lifted up and another level added underneath, or shifted somewhere else completely.

The access that is gained under the house is also an opportunity to do things that in usual circumstances are quite difficult — like underfloor insulation and

working with the plumbing and electrical systems. As stated earlier, repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to plan in advance exactly what you want to do with a house before you repile so all your permissions can be gained at the same time — saving money — and also allowing you to organise access

without the right accreditation. Right now, it is illegal for unauthorised people to work on a build — plumbing must be done by qualified plumbers, gas installed by qualified gasfitters, wiring by qualified electricians.

If a builder is in charge of the entire project, he must have the

right credentials too, and assure the provenance of his subcontractors.

As of January 1st all building work over $30,000 in value must have a written contract. Tradespeople will be required by law to disclose their credentials and current licensing status, or face heavy penalties.

There will also be an enforced one year ‘defect repair period’, during which a builder must repair any defects the customer informs them about — ‘no questions asked’.

Rules like these place a great responsibility on individual builders, and are rumored by some to be a precursor to changes to the Resource Management Act enabling the fasttracking of local authorities’ role in the pre-build process — a ‘red tape cutting’ move which was a key election issue.

Large, organised builders’ associations such as the Certified Builders already adhere to the codes of best practice and strict qualifications monitoring demanded by the amendment.

As the onus goes on builders and project managers to provide longer guarantees and more binding contracts, groups such as the Certified Builders and Master Builders have already rolled out considerable initiatives putting them ahead of the curve of what the modern trade and its regulations demand.

World’s first NZ Inc. farm in the high tropics, higher than the Remarkables Waikato farm development company Dairy Solutionz (NZ) Ltd will open a dairy farm in the high tropics this month.

Funded by the Colombian government and Corpoica — the equivalent to AgResearch in New Zealand — the 117ha, 300-cow unit in the Narino region of South Colombia, is the first demonstration farm to use entirely New Zealand design and technology.

With weather conditions similar to the Waikato, Dairy Solutionz chief executive Derek Fairweather says rye grass and clover are flourishing and the development is part of the answer to the issue of global food security.

“Securing enough food to nourish growing populations around the world is one of the top priorities for many governments, and we believe one of the answers to the food security issue is harnessing the untapped benefits of the world’s tropical environments.

“It just so happens New Zealand cows and pasture thrive in the high tropics. We’re using Kiwi ingenuity to take tropical land and create rich food bowls which will benefit previously poor economies.”

The compact yet highly efficient Clean Green Effluent system automatically disperses effluent with virtually no environmental impact through it’s super low application rate.

The system starts by filtering out the solids through the Clean Green Effluent Co patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash then recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. Debating a beef cooperative After some lean years that produced a fair bit of hardship for beef farmers, their prospects are looking up as they enjoy high prices of up to $5.90 per kilogram for prime steers and with bulls fetching $6.00 a kilo.

The has been much debate in the media on ‘where to from here’. Some are advocating that the beef industry should form a Fonterra-type cooperative – but on the opposite side of the coin are those who ask that if the Fonterra cooperative model is the way forward for beef farmers, how is it Fonterra can’t halt the fall in milk prices.

The suggestion of a lack of modernday farmer loyalty has also been raised as an argument that forming cooperatives does not guarantee continued farmer loyalty and supply. It’s suggested many modern-day farmers like to enter into their own negotiations with independent processors and it is evident since the formation of Fonterra there has also been the establishment

of a substantial number of independent proprietary milk processing companies, some with overseas shareholding and others like Open Country where the main shareholders are the Talley Group in the South Island who have acquired ownership of Affco - the former Auckland Farmers Freezing Company.

Fonterra director Ian Farrelly, who rears 10,000 calves, said last week that the beef industry lacks a strategy for adding value to the 1.9 million dairy farmer bobby calves which are processed every winter for veal and by-products.

Farrelly claims that if these calves were on-reared they could add billions of dollars in extra revenue to New Zealand’s agricultural export industry.

With regard to loyalty and what is good for farmers, I believe that today’s farmer should remember that history has shown that in the early years due to a lack of organised cooperative marketing, many farmers felt they were at the mercy of the skilled negotiators of individual companies whose offices and cool store facilities were located in Tooley Street, London.

Dairy produce was all sold on the free market system with the directorates or proprietors of individual Tooley Street companies accepting full responsibility for sales and trading. They decided upon the terms of sale, methods of transport and choice of agents.

DWN farewells long-time board members Michelle Wilson and Angela Fullerton have stepped aside, but not out.

As long-serving members of the Dairy Women’s Network board, they plan to retain a keen interest in the organisation.

At the AGM last month, Michelle Wilson officially handed over the reins as chair to Justine Kidd, and board member Angela Fullerton also officially stepped down after 12 years.

They cite giving other women opportunities in the Network’s governance roles as one of the main reasons for taking a step back.
