Hot air balloonists from all over the globe will attend the Balloons Over Waikato festival from April 3-7

The event has drawn hot air balloon pilots from all over the globe.

“We are an international event,” said Classic Events managing director Michele Connell.

“So balloonists come from as far as Europe, USA and Brazil, with a contingent of Australians attending every year.

“The event is free, making it one of the last large scale free events in the country.”

As many as thirty balloons are expected during the five-day event which starts with the Hamilton city ascension launch on April 3. Balloons will be coordinated to lift off simultaneously at 7.30am from six parks across the city.

At approximately 5.30pm, the balloons will once again commence inflation and fly from Hamilton Lake’s Innes Common.

Around 6.30am the following morning, a number of balloons will lift off from Innes Common just before dawn.

The remainder of the balloons will rise as dawn breaks. The first 2000 people who arrive on the grounds will receive a free breakfast thanks to Fonterra, Sanitarium and Waikato Environment Centre Hamilton.

In the afternoon, the balloons will be on display at Westfield Chartwell between 3-6pm, providing an opportunity for children to have a tethered balloon ride from the roof top carpark.

On April 5 the balloons will commence inflation at Innes Common and various schools around Hamilton. Pilots will talk to the pupils and if weather permits launch from the school fields. The Balloons Over Waikato parade will take place down Hamilton’s Hood Street at 7pm.

The cash grab competition will take place around 7.30am the following day when balloonists will attempt to remove $1,000 from the top of a pole at Innes Common.

Between 4-9pm the nightglow at Waikato University will feature an orchestrated balloon glow show and fireworks finale.

“We outgrew our previous nightglow venue and now see approximately 80,000 spectators attend the nightglow,” said Ms Connell.

“Over the years many new ideas and initiatives have been added, making it fresh and exciting every year.”

The final day of the festival will see the balloons provide tethered rides for children for a gold coin donation at Innes Common. All proceeds will go towards Lions International Clubs.

“It is a fantastic event, made all the better because the whole five days are free.”

“Now, the very next day here was a total stranger who had gone out of his way to donate feed for our rescue animals after reading the article.”

Just the day before Bill turned up, Jacqui had arranged the purchase of several bales of hay and travelled 100kms to pick them up, only to be told on arrival that it had been sold to a farmer the day before.

“We had wasted time and money on the trip only to be let down with no idea that our hay had been sold,” said Jacqui.

“We were pretty disgusted by this behaviour during the ‘big dry’ crisis.”

When Taumarunui farmer Bill Love read a story about Jacqui Emmett and her family’s efforts to provide a sanctuary for livestock animals in last month’s issue of Waikato Farming Lifestyles, he wondered how he could help out.

A short time later he was travelling north with a trailer-load of barley and a few rolls of recycled chain link fencing to deliver to the Emmett’s Little Acres Farm.

Bill wasn’t entirely sure where in Te Akau the Emmett’s lived, but he wasn’t daunted by the task of tracking them down. He stopped at the Hamilton police station, a veterinarian clinic and Animates Pet Store to ask directions. The staff at Animates checked their database and found a phone number for the Emmett’s. And a short time later, Bill was on his way to the Emmett’s property to deliver his trailer-load of livestock feed and supplies.

When Bill arrived at Little Acres Farm, the Emmett’s saw his trailer covered in black plastic with rolls of recycled chain link fencing on top.

“When he lifted the cover and told us the whole trailer was full of barley and it was all for the animals here we were speechless,” said Jacqui.

“Then he said we could have the fencing he threw on in case we could make use of it — again we were totally shocked and surprised.

Opening its doors in 1914, the Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company Ltd, near Morrinsville, is set to celebrate their centennial next year and the theme of survival and sustainability and innovation runs deep through the small independent company over the years.

I

t has weathered two world wars, a great depression and recessions and chairman of directors and shareholder Stephen Allen says that while they are small in size, producing around one percent of New Zealand’s milk production, they continue to grow financially.

“In the past 10 to 15 years it shows that our turnover has grown three fold as have our staff.”

Stephen’s great, great uncle, a Morrinsville solicitor, drew up the co-operative’s original deed of incorporation. Having learnt the history from a young age, Stephen identifies the great wars and innovation into long life milk products as being poignant moments.

“Surviving the world wars when men were in

short supply is a great achievement for Tatua.

Farm work was very physical and labour intensive, it wasn’t as easy as it is now when we have machines and technology to help us out.”

The commodity of milk, perishable by nature, was seen as a luxury and something people could put on hold.

“Many farmers who weren’t enlisted in the army turned to sheep farming because wool was needed for soldier’s uniforms and for blankets,” adds Stephen.

Milk suppliers are located within a 12km radius of the manufacturing facilities which has limited the volume of milk production meaning growth needed to come from innovation.

Waikato Farming LiFestyLes March 2013 Tatua export 94 percent of their products overseas however looking up the dairy aisle of the supermarket and seeing their branding plastered over products the 6 percent which stays in New Zealand seems to be enough.

Stephen identifies the family feeling within the co-operative as the core of its success through the years.

“There have been a number of families that have been involved from the beginning and it gives it a real sense of belonging.”

During the 70s and 80s the company began developing long life milk products and their most recognised is whipped cream in a can along with a variety of creams including crème fraiche, mascarpone and sour cream.

“Everyone in the company has a belief that we can be successful and when you compare a small business to a large business, it’s easier to get that team sprit going when you’re smaller. There is a genuine feeling that we can do it, sustain it and make it commercially successful.”

“We realised that if we wanted to stay in business then we need to specialise and be innovative.”

Now in the co-operative are 109 shareholders and on the board of directors, there are six elected shareholders and two

independent directors appointed for their breath of knowledge outside of farming.

Stephen says the company isn’t afraid of growth and developing specialised milk products is both technology and people intensive creating jobs in Morrinsville.

While some areas of the farming industry are struggling to fill positions, Tatua has more than enough CVs when they post a vacancy.

“When we began a new food plant we required 30 staff and we had a huge amount of interest. The other thing is that we don’t have a high staff turnover and people seem to really enjoy it.”

To mark their 100th year in business, the company have commissioned author Dr Ian Hunter to write a book on the company focusing on the people who created it and their stories, contribution both as individuals and collectively.

A start to whole-of-catchment management has been made by last year’s launch by the WRC of a regional plan change process — ‘Healthy Rivers — Plan for Change’– to protect and restore the health of these important waterways.

Partners are the five iwi affiliated to the Waikato and Waipa Rivers, and a key stakeholder is the Waikato River Authority, a statutory management body representing iwi and Crown, which is making up to $7m available this year for water clean-up projects.

Authority spokesperson Philip Burton says that the concept of co-funding is key to the restoration and protection of New Zealand’s longest river. “We can’t do the job that’s required on our own — we need partners and collaborators, especially for the larger projects.”

WRC recently signed off on new water allocation rules that not only regulate water taken for dairy shed wash-down but also tie in responsibility for catchments by requiring farmers to fence and plant the water source they utilise, wherever it crosses their land.

limits, how can we work within them?’, rather than not wanting any limits at all.”

Signalling industry commitment to sustainable farming practice is the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord between industry body DairyNZ and New Zealand dairy factories, to be implemented this year. Among its regulations is the exclusion of all dairy cattle from significant wetlands by 2014 and from significant waterways by 2017.

In the Waikato, DairyNZ has come to the collaborative party with joint ventures such as the DairyNZ/WRC Effluent Expo at Mystery Creek on March 26, and a giant goodpractice project in the upper Waikato/Karapiro catchment — ‘Healthy Farms/Healthy Rivers’, co-funded with the Waikato River Authority.

Offering free advice and support to every dairy farmer in the catchment, it aims to utilise ‘collective farmer action’ to reduce nutrient and sediment loads in the Waikato River and improve water use efficiency.

Alongside government, iwi and industry players are independents National Wetland Trust, currently developing a National Wetland Centre at Ohaupo with assistance from WRC and the WRA, and NZ Landcare Trust, which has its national office in Hamilton and has been promoting a sustainable approach to land and water management since 1996.

The Woods family of Ohaupo has proved the old adage ‘build it, and they will come’. And when people come to Little Valley Farm, they come on horses.

T

he Little Valley Farm ‘playground’ consists of a semi-enclosed indoor dressage arena, a cross country course and a show jumping arena, all surrounded by farmland for hunting and hacking, but the four members of the Woods family cheerily admit that originally the facilities were built solely for their own equestrian activities.

However, perhaps that should be equestrienne, as only the female Woods ride.

“My husband Paul is our support person and our groom, but he doesn’t ride. If I had one wish it would be for him to ride with us,” says Natalie Woods. “I did buy him a horse trek once, and as you can’t return a present he just had to do

it. He paid me back with a ticket for motocross, but I did better on the bike than he did on the horse. I have a very heavy foot!”

Originally the Woods were dairy farmers.

“Then nine years ago, Paul came home and said, ‘I don’t want to milk cows anymore’.

We looked back at our own upbringing on the land — the Natalie (centre) with daughters good bits and the bad bits — Jessica and Mikayla — family winners and realised we wanted to offer our children a lot more of our time. RBS Invest – A new approach to farm ownership An alternative pathway to farm ownership brings strong opportunities for both investors and participating farmers looking to build equity and advance through the industry.

Rural Business Solutions (RBS), a Cambridge based farm advisory firm has recently launched its investment platform RBS Invest, initially targeting dairy farm investment.

The extensive banking, farming and advisory experience of RBS partners meant they have identified significant issues within the farming sector around farm succession and advancement in the industry.

Those issues demand greater opportunity for investors and farmers to participate without all parties being encumbered by significant debt levels.

RBS consultant Paul Schuler said sharemilking positions, the usual pathway to build equity and ultimately achieve farm ownership were in decline.

Cows over there are very lame when they have it. Digital Dermatitis has arrived in New Zealand as well. Cows don’t seem to get lame from it like they do overseas but it is very important that we treat cases here because it can turn into a major issue. When you see a case the best thing is to take a photo and email it to us, make it dry with a paper towel and spray it with tetravet. Repeat this treatment in about five days.

Are foot baths beneficial?

How many of you use hoof mats or foot baths?

What are you trying to achieve with it and how helpful do you find them? You may say that you are trying to harden the feet and find that it is very effective, and I would have to agree that footbaths can make cows feet very hard — especially when you use formalin. But does it minimise lameness?

Scientific trials haven’t shown any evidence of that. There is no proof that hard hooves minimise lameness. If you believe that lameness is caused by physical forces then you should be very surprised. Consider this, our soldiers in the army wear proper army boots rather than sneakers. The army boots can handle the rough landscape much better than sneakers. If you harden up the hooves then they accordingly should be a lot more hard wearing, and therefore be able to cope with their physical environment better resulting in less ‘stone bruising’ and white line disease.

But that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. How can you explain that?

If you have been reading my articles then you probably know what I am going to say. Our experience is that we can go to a farm where the hooves are really soft and yet there is very little haemorrhage in the hooves. Then we go to farms where the hooves are very hard to the point where it almost feels like we are cutting concrete and yet the hooves display much more haemorrhaging.

How can you explain that from a physical damage point of view? The reason is that it is not physical force that causes the problem. The problem comes from the inside out rather than from the outside in. The live tissue (corium or quick) is unhealthy and this

In this case it needs to be a bath and not a mat because the liquid needs to get up onto the skin above the claw. A mat can’t do that.

Apart from that you don’t need footbaths or hoof mats. You will have better experience if you use that money to buy a bunch of flowers for your wife!

So no matter how hard you make the hooves if the corium is unhealthy you will still end up with lame cows. I would argue that if you have lame cows you are better off to have your cows on soft feet instead. Soft hooves don’t penetrate into the wound the same and therefore are more comfortable for the cow. So why do you want to harden the

hooves? It only makes hoof trimming a harder job.

Foot baths should only be used as a disinfectant for things like footrot and Digital Dermatitis. Many of you may not know what Digital Dermatitis is — that is why I have included this photo with this article. Digital Dermatitis is an infectious disease in the skin above

Getting grass faster in winter

A natural answer to parasite problems

As soil temperatures and sunlight hours drop, plants have less energy for growth. We can boost growth with fertiliser N, but plants struggle to turn the N into growth. For example, in the warmer seasons, a kg of N as granular urea will produce 10-20 kg of additional dry matter. In winter this drops to as low as 4-8 kg, which is often uneconomic The way to maximise responses in winter is to minimise the energy the plant needs to expend to get fertiliser N into the plant, and in a form it can turn into protein as easily as possible.

Plants, and this includes pasture plants, can take up urea directly through the leaves, provided it is in liquid or solution form. The application rate must not be excessively high as this can cause leaf burn as the leaf surface dries out during the day. It is very important to include a urease inhibitor — otherwise urease enzyme on the plant leaves can result in much of the urea being converted to ammonia gas and lost to the atmosphere.

Once inside the plant, urea can be processed into ammonium-N and then amino acids — the building block of protein — with less energy consumption by the plant than pulling nitrate-N up through the roots and then reducing the nitrate to ammonium-N. When GA3 is applied by itself, the potential response is often limited because the plant roots can not take up the extra N and S needed to build the DM that the GA3 is ‘instructing’ it to do.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis just refers to inflammation of the sinus membranes. Usually the inflammation is caused by an infection like the cold virus, other times the inflammation is a response to an allergen or a faulty immune system response.

Regardless of the cause, in most cases chronic sinusitis is an indication of a poorly functioning immune system. The target of therapy is topical, trying to sterilise the nasal passages, and then to target the immune system chaos.

Our respiratory tract from our nose to our lungs is lined with special tissue called respiratory epithelium. The role of this mucus secreting membrane is to help protect us from airborne germs and allergens and then to act as our internal air conditioning system to filter air, to control humidity, regulate temperature and to protect our vulnerable lungs.

When working well it is a brilliant piece of design effectively linking and regulating the outside world from our sensitive internal tissues and organs.

However when it malfunctions it causes all sorts of misery. Last week I commented that I had 15 years of lower respiratory problems. During this period I also lived with chronic sinusitis which brings the joy of a sinus headache and regular infections.

Fortunately these are no longer part of my life.

This is one group of problems that can respond really well to nutritional therapy.

Nutritional medicine practitioner Robert Iker recommends developing a systematic programme for chronic sinusitis. This includes practising nasal hygiene with steaming and irrigating, having a healthy antiinflammatory diet and taking antioxidant and anti-inflammatory supplements.

My advice is similar but I like to add colloidal silver as a nasal spray to help keep nasal passages sterile. To this I add a cocktail of antioxidants based on OPC’s (grape seed extract) vitamin C, bioflavonoids, trace minerals and many more. For adults my base supplements are up to 8000mg of fish oils and a comprehensive multi antioxidant/ mineral plus another 200mg of pure OPC, 2000mg of vitamin C and 500mg of mixed bioflavonoids. If low vitamin D levels are suspected or confirmed, we also add vitamin D, often with an intensive period then a lower maintenance level. This seems to help reduce mucous membrane inflammation, mucous secretion and help to reduce susceptibility of infections. Call me if you need help or more information.

2013 effluent expo Success comes from clean and green simplicity A ‘down to earth’ approach that aims to save farmers money while still protecting the environment has led to great success for Kiwi company, Clean Green Effluent Systems. Using tried and tested technology with a minimum of moving parts, the effluent innovators promise a solution which is totally automated, and which provides a finished product suitable for use as a fertiliser across all soil types.

The Clean Green process begins by filtering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash. Fresh ‘green water’ is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall.

Thus dairy yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water — a big saving, especially during dry summers! This reduces total fresh water consumption to a low 20 litres per cow, per day — a saving on average of 30 litres.

The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that was designed with new effluent spreading regulations in mind. It supports a super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼ mm), and can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off.

This removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems.

The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity. That means far less necessity for storage — a big issue under recent changes to effluent guidelines across New Zealand.

reduces the overall quantity of farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land.

Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can mean that millions of litres of liquid must be dispersed each year — sometimes more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed!

Separating the wood from the trees Genomic Selection holds huge promise of faster value gains from genetic improvement of commercial tree species The Radiata Pine Breeding Company Ltd. (RPBC) is a New Zealand company focussed on the provision of superior radiata pine germplasm to its shareholders and customers in Australasia. RPBC is embarking a development programme which can halve the traditional 25-30 year breeding and deployment cycle. The economic impact is huge as the rate of improvement in key traits, eg growth and wood quality, is doubled.

Genomic Selection is the key technology to enable this development.

Genomic Selection is bringing changes to animal and plant breeding because it: • speeds the breeding and deployment cycle by reducing the need for progeny tests • allows the selection and evaluation of multiple traits simultaneously • reduces cost and time for assessing traits that are difficult or expensive to measure • allows the quick introduction of new traits such as disease resistance • establishes a platform for introduction of other molecular technologies The major overall gain arising from genomic selection is that genetically improved planting stock is deployed more rapidly in commercial forests. Unlike GE, there are no regulatory barriers to uptake.

What is Genomic Selection?

Traditionally, breeding values are calculated by observing and measuring the expressed trait in the subject tree as it is growing (phenotypic data).

It can take some years before such traits can be observed or measured

for. Genomic Selection, on the other hand (and this is where it can get pretty technical), involves identifying patterns of molecular markers along strands of DNA, the genetic blueprint, of trees being tested. These patterns are compared to those of a pedigree of genotypes with known phenotypic data (called a training population).

This allows individuals with good genetic matches to desired traits/ phenotypes to be identified. Such diagnostics can be done in the nursery when the plant is less than one year old. By contrast, to generate phenotypic data using traditional methods the plant would normally be grown to six — eight years old.

RPBC considers that Genomic Selection is sufficiently well developed and commercially proven in many plant and animal applications to be implemented in the NZ radiata pine industry.

In addition, there is a small window within which the chance of obtaining government funding is high, after which the chance of funding will be seriously diminished as new processes and priorities are introduced. Work already underway, funded mainly by Scion with some RPBC assistance, has built a robust R&D programme and created a network of international technical experts to help guide the programme.

These days we are paying over twice that and it’s unlikely to get any better. As energy costs have steadily increased in New Zealand way beyond the global average and we believe this is having a serious detrimental effect on the growth and productivity of our economy.

And, it’s not just farmers, most people believe that electricity prices are too high. They find it difficult to understand why the costs have escalated well above the rate of inflation since about 2002 when the government introduced the market led model.

Despite obvious evidence of profit gauging and poor capital reinvestment politicians have steadfastly defended the current structure.

Electricity is as vital to our economy as our roads and water resources. The cost of not having supply is huge. Ask

those in the Far North District of New Zealand who have had to put up with a third world electricity supply for years.

The network is actually turned off for a day each year for maintenance. Close to the whole district is simply turned off! I wonder if Auckland or Wellington would find this acceptable?

Power should not be managed through an artificial market model. We should simply pay the cost of supply plus what is required to maintain the current asset and build more as it is required.

We are now selling half this monopolistic market system to the private sector that will by its very nature optimise profits for shareholders. As the government talks about the average ‘kiwi mum and dad investors’ getting the opportunity to be a shareholder they are unlikely to be adequately compensated for the exponentially increasing cost of power.

This “market” system based on selling kWh has serious shortcomings that should be obvious to all. All power generators get paid at the price bid by the highest bidder. Because generators only earn income when they actually generate electricity there is no incentive to build spare generation. The greater the shortage the better the price!

We should not be privatising this commodity because there is simply no alternative or substitute. The market model does not work either effectively or efficiently in such circumstances. If this government was really determined to build and grow our economy to provide good well paid jobs they should not have an energy policy that escalates cost per kWh and reduces any incentive to maintain or build capacity.
