Edgecumbe dairy farmer and qualified automotive service technician, Josh Cozens, has been named the Waikato/ Bay of Plenty FMG Young Farmer of the Year.

It was the 29-year-old contract milker’s third attempt at the title and he took it out after winning the fiercely-contested Waikato/Bay of Plenty Regional Final.

“I’m absolutely blown away. I wasn’t expecting this at all. All the effort I’ve put in over the years has been worth it,” said Josh.

The win has secured the father of three a spot in the prestigious FMG Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Invercargill.

Josh told the large crowd at the event that it’s going to be a hectic few months.

“The study I have to do between now and July will certainly keep me busy, plus, we are moving farms as well, so there is going to be lots happening,” said Josh.

“We hope to be 50-50 sharemilking or in an equity partnership within three to five years.”

Next season, Josh and his wife Shaz will be contract milking 450 cows at Pyes Pa near Tauranga.

The Eastern Bay Young Farmers member won almost $12,000 worth of prizes, including an XR150 Honda farm bike. He also took out the AgriSports Challenge.

A record number of women competed in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Regional Final.

Second place went to Colin Tremain, who manages a 1,750-cow dairy farm and support unit in Rotorua. The 30-yearold won the coveted Ravensdown AgriSkills Challenge.

Putaruru contract milker, Eoin O’Mahony, took out third place and the AGMARDT Agri-Business Challenge.

Waharoa 50-50 sharemilker, Sophia Clark, won the Meridian Energy AgriKnowledge Challenge. Sophia was described by the MC Te Radar as an ‘intellectual powerhouse’.

Te Awamutu 50-50 sharemilker, Rachael Phillips, took home the Massey University Agri-Growth Challenge.

Developing freedom camping solutions

After meeting with 32 mayors and deputy mayors from across the country about freedom camping, Minister of Tourism, Kelvin Davis, has announced the establishment of a working group to develop solutions to freedom camping issues.

“The meeting was very productive and I want to thank the mayors and deputy mayors for sharing their views and experiences.

“It was really valuable. The issues with freedom camping are not insurmountable and there is a clear willingness from everyone to work together and find solutions,” said Mr Davis.

“Freedom camping is a complex area. Freedom campers bring economic benefits to our regions, but the behaviour of a small percentage and the sheer increase in volume of freedom campers is causing real problems for some councils.

“The mayors talked about the need for a more consistent approach, including around enforcement and signage, more infrastructure needed in some areas, and the need to look at the Freedom Camping Act.” The mayors fully supported the establishment of a working group — made up of central and local government, the tourism industry, and other stakeholders — to discuss and work through the issues.

“I am keen to get the working group established as quickly as possible. We need to come up with some solutions in time for the next summer peak season. Other issues, such as looking

at the Freedom Camping Act, will take more time.

Local Government Minister, Nanaia Mahuta, has welcomed the establishment of the working group.

“This is a significant issue for many local authorities who face significant stress and challenges to respond to seasonal influx of freedom camping,” she said.

“The Government recognises that tourism is an important industry — it’s our biggest export earner — but it’s also important that councils have the necessary tools and powers to respond, when their communities are feeling the impact of high visitor numbers.

“Collaboration is key in this situation and it’s great to see central and local government are committed to working together, with the tourism industry and other stakeholders.”

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, in consultation with other agencies, will develop a terms of reference for the working group.

Over the last two years, international visitors who did some freedom camping spent an average of around $4,700 and stayed around 51 days in New Zealand, compared with the average for all visitors of $3,200 and 18 days.

visitors doing at least some freedom camping during their stay has risen from around 30,000 to 115,000 annually.

FAMILY FARMING SUCCESS

Fourth-generation Te Awamutu dairy farmer Rachael Phillips decided to compete in the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest, due to the encouragement of her friend and fellow farmer Sophia Clark.

R

achael is 27 years old and is in her first season 50-50 sharemilking 240 cows on the 70 hectare family farm, and previously experienced milking 440 ewes in England.

“This year for our region, almost half the finalists for the young farmers competition were women.

Louise Collingwood was the last woman to win the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Regional Final in 2003. It’d be great to have another woman take out the regional final,” says Rachael.

“I have been back on the farm for five

years working alongside my parents. I went on my OE and worked on a sheep dairy farm in England for eight months.

It was before sheep farming was recognised here and everyone thought it was strange. It was great to experience, but I do prefer my cows.

“Sheep milking is definitely a cleaner milking, and the milk stayed on the farm to make cheese and they supplied highend product to stores such as Harrods.”

Rachael now manages the family farm and hopes to buy it off her parents one day.

“It took me three years to work my way up from lower order sharemilking, and I brought the stock off mum and dad last year.

“This is dad’s seventh year doing once-a-day milking all-year round. It is mostly a one person farm and dad helps out when I need him. It’s the best of both worlds for him, as he is not ready to fully retire.

“Dad started once-a-day milking thinking it would keep him farming longer as an older farmer, and he wanted the challenge of something completely different. We have found great benefits including animal health — we don't have fertility issues, they compact calve and there are very few lameness issues.

The stock keep their condition and even though our production dropped slightly, our profit is as good if not better, which is what counts.”

The farm is considered a system two, and half a tonne of PK per cow per year is brought in as supplement feed.

“We are a grass based system and this maximises the profit. On good years we make grass silage, but havent for the past two years as the springs have been tougher.

“I have been involved in young farmers for nine years and joined the Te Kawa West Young Farmers Club — there are about 40 members. I joined for the social side and have become involved on the community side of things, and am on the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Regional Committee.

“I am also on the Waikato/Bay of Plenty TB Free committee as a farmer representative delegate. It has been great to develop my leadership skill.

“TB Free is going really well — I communicate new things coming out through OSPRI to make sure young farmers are aware of new information.

Rachael believes farm succession has been portrayed as difficult through the media, but disagrees.

“It looks different now — equity farming, lease farms and opportunities are still there for young people, if you want to own the farm or be a successful business owner, it is worth going for.

“I love that I am self-employed at the age of 27 and have a successful lifestyle business. There is always cycles in farming and it gets tough, but it gets better — that’s why support networks are important — you know you are not the only one going through stuff.

“This last spring was so wet, a lot of us were down, but we’d turn up at the club meetings and have a rant together.

“This is my first year competing for the

Young Farmers title. I think more ladies should compete, because there are so many of us involved in the industry. I don't think people realise how many women hold such high responsible roles, and this is one way to show that we can actually accomplish as much as the boys, and just as good.

“The future looks bright, and I am working on succession with owning my parents farm — they are happy and are supportive, and really want to see young people succeed in the dairy industry.

Our parents worked hard and I want to work hard for it too.”

APPRECIATING HERITAGE SEEDS

Setha Davenport and Roddy Branagan grow and sell New Zealand heritage seeds on a hectare of land not far from Lake Tutira, providing high quality nutrient dense plant material through organic growing principles that support and work with nature.

etha is from Pennsylvania in the United States, and Roddy is from the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

The couple met in New Zealand in 2007 and have been growing together since 2008.

“I was studying sustainable agriculture in the United States and did an internship here on the Coromandel as my mum lived here,” says Setha.

Setha liked it so much in New Zealand she eventually got work permits and residency and the rest is history.

“The internship was on an organic seed farm as opposed to a vegetable operation. As fate would have it, I enjoyed working with seeds — it was fun as you have to grow the veggies to get the seed, so I was seeing the full cycle of production and this sparked my interest.

“I started growing commercially in tandem with vegetables in the Wairarapa.”

Setha says heritage vegetables are what were produced before the industrial revolution for agriculture.

“Companies started breeding plants for large scale operations. They wanted them to have the same look, mature at the same time for mechanical harvesting, and fit in a certain box.

Taste and nutrition fell off the radar.”

“If we go back to the older varieties, you find they have a lot more flavour and higher nutrition. There is scientific data to back these claims done by Mark Christensen and the Heritage Food Crops Research Trust. They analysed in the lab modern varieties of food such as apples and tomatoes.”

“When I eat the older varieties, I feel much more nourished, and they are tastier and hardier for the homegrown situation.”

As an example, if you grow hybrid broccoli they all ripen at the same time.

“This is not always convenient, but if you grow the older sprouting varieties, they sprout one in the centre and more off the sides over time.”

Older varieties of potatoes are also one of the crops the couple have carefully maintained.

“We have 10 varieties of heritage potatoes available through our company Setha’s Seeds, including Maori potatoes.

We propagate the potatoes from seed tubers, they are selected from a quality plant for size and are stored differently from eating potatoes.

“We have strengthened the varieties and are getting good results.”

Setha says the success can vary with all crops, heritage plants being no exception, because a gardener has the ability to control the environment but not the weather.

“If you provide the correct environment things will flourish, but if it is too wet or dry it may not be that good for certain crops. For example, tomatoes will not do well in wet humid weather.

“All of our heritage seeds came to New Zealand with the early settlers arriving on boats and wakas to start their new lives here.”

Some came sewn into hems of women’s skirts or in their trunks or suitcases and are very well suited to the climate here. They have been kept alive by the gardeners of New Zealand.

“We used wwoofers in the past to help

We enjoy educating people and we treated them like interns and made it an interactive learning experience. They always left happy, informed, and had a sustainable life experience to take back to their countries.”

The couple provide workshops on saving seeds and heritage gardening.

“There are things to do at the end of each season to harvest and store seeds properly. There are beginner crops and things that require a lot more knowledge. Tomatoes, lettuces and peas are the easiest ones as you don't have to worry about them crossing.”

crop, and people can get confused.

“At the moment our food crops have been greatly reduced over the green revolution. Variety dropped exorbitantly from what was available. In diversity there is strength, especially if a disease came through.

“The more crop variety you have, the more likely some are to come through strong rather than have just one or two varieties that can be wiped out. If you have a garden with 80 different things growing in it, five might die but 75 might live on.”

Romney breeders Tony and Robin Parker are among those celebrating outstanding contributions and top performers in the field of science, innovation, industry training and genetics.

T

ony is 87 years old and with Robins’ support was the first to produce a ‘selection index’ based on performance background for sheep in 1961.

“Massey University professor Al Rae spoke at a farmers' meeting at Waimarama in the mid 50’s and told us if we want meat or wool, we had to measure for it and the best way to improve the Romney breed was to gauge performance — take note of which ewes bred twins, weigh the lambs at weaning, and the wool from their first shearing,” said Tony.

“He took the mystique out of breeding.

I was the first farmer to apply Al’s methods and that was the start of modern breeding techniques that have transformed the industry.

I came from a very conservative farming family and my father gave me 100 stud ewes in 1948 because he wanted me to continue farming.

When I was younger I worked for stud breeders in Gore and was an expert sheep trimmer.”

The ‘simple logic’ of performance measuring proved irresistible and Robin has a science background and fully backed his decision to use the system.

Tony and Robin Parker were the first to produce a ‘selection index’ based on performance background for sheep fiercely opposed by the breed societies as they dominated the industry.

“The societies did a lot of harm by breeding animals for looks. They were squat, wool-blind and wide-headed, prone to foot rot and 30 per cent of them needed help to have their single lamb.

“They ran the ram fairs and conned farmers into thinking only they knew what a good animal looked like. They felt threatened by Al and

those who acted on his advice.”

By 1961 Tony and Robin had collected enough records for Al and he sent a PHD student, Neil Clarke, from Massey to process the records.

“His calculator had wheels and cogs and by the morning we had the first index of lambs based on their productive background.

“According to the calculations, the top ram was an ugly brute

by the standards of the time.”

It had narrow shoulders and a long head and legs. It was very different from most of the stud sheep and they decided to mate the ram to the farm's commercial ewes.

“He was everything we had been taught to reject and wasn’t wool blind.

Although 49/60 was a registered ram, I wasn't prepared to breed him with the registered ewes. We recorded some unregistered ewes which had twins at their first two lambings and put him out with them.

“Graeme Hight from Whatawhata Research Station, came to buy rams the next year, and asked for rams bred from 49/60. There were ten of them and he took six and I kept the others.

These were the first unregistered rams that I had used.”

By the 1980s farmers were putting their top animals into a central flock and making big gains by pooling their resources.

“Registered sheep at the time were wool blind and shepherds would have to assist lambing. The sheep had been chosen entirely on their appearance and were like boxes — short in the cannon bone, and wide in the head which was bound to give lambing trouble. They were exactly the wrong thing for the hill country.

“A few of us advertised our rams and all hell broke loose. The breed societies tried to ostracize us but our clients stuck by us and during the next 15 years our lambing percentages escalated to 150 per cent and remained there. The stud flocks

“We had the support from ordinary farmers and eventually formed the NZ Romney Development Group. It went on for about 20 years and we were screening around 150,000 unregistered sheep to the highest performers, and providing rams for 7,000 farms.

“Our sheep were hill country sheep, performing under hill country conditions.”

Abraham claims Speedshear title

Wairarapa shearer Paerata Abraham capped an emotional night of speed shearing in Te Kuiti by beating the organiser and celebrating with a haka tribute to fellow shearer Beau St George, who died in a road crash in France last April.

Mr Abraham shore the fastest time of 16.56 seconds for a single lamb to win the North Island Speedshear Championship in Te Kuiti.

The runner-up was big speedshears rival and Te Kuiti event organiser Jack Fagan, who shore his final lamb in 17.28 seconds, while third was young Kaeo shearer Marshall Guy, shearing 17.86 seconds.

The emotion followed with Mr Abraham accepting the Beau St George Memorial Trophy, with memories of shearing with Mr St George in the woolshed years ago, followed by Tika Tonu, the haka of Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa iwi Ngati Kahungunu.

The trophy was presented by Mr St George’s father, former world lamb shearing record holder Neil St George, who in front of the speedshear crowd spoke of the death of a son as being ‘the most cruelest thing in the whole, whole world’ that a father could face.

With a special message for the younger ones embarking on the lifestyle of a globetrotting shearer he warned of the driving on different sides of the road around the world.

“If you can do one thing for me take utter care. I’m going through so much pain I can’t even describe it.

family, saying it should be in their care between each presentation. The winning shearer did, however, keep the $2,000 winning prize.

was runner-up in 27.18 seconds, and third place went to Eleonore Resneau, of France, with 27.66 seconds. The two women beat three other male finalists.

Mr Fagan and Ms Mullooly beat Ms Resneau and her brother Thimoleon Resneau in an international match and there was a fitting end to a farmers’ speedshear, won by Neil St George.

Forestry amendments proposed Investments in sensitive land involving forestry rights will be brought into the scope of the Overseas Investment Act. The changes have been proposed

by Associate Finance Minister, David Parker, and would introduce a lighthanded ‘checklist’ screening regime, which will make it easier for overseas investors to gain approval to buy forestry rights than if they were subject to the current screening regime.

Overseas buyers of existing freehold and leasehold forestry land, who already face screening, would also be able to use the light-handed checklist.

“The changes need to be made before the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership

comes into force, or we will lose the chance to screen such sales forever,” Mr Parker says.

“It will then be possible for future governments to tighten or further loosen the criteria applied to forestry investment, if required.

“Any forest can in effect be purchased as a forestry registration right. This means that a screening regime that covers only freehold and leasehold is ineffective.

time, so it is important they are included in the regime. There is no evidence that the change will have a substantial effect on commercial values.”

The forestry sector is reliant on overseas investment with 70 per cent of plantation trees in overseas ownership.

Under the proposed changes, investors buying up to 1,000 hectares of forestry rights each year will not need consent, but purchases above that level would be screened. This would apply to

all forestry rights, including bare land planting. Investors would likely pass a new screening test for freehold and leasehold bare land, given they can demonstrate benefit to New Zealand from converting land into forestry, providing jobs and advancing the Government’s ‘one billion trees’ policy.

The amendments have been submitted to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee and the Government will also be consulting further with Maori.

Forestry exports to grow Forestry exports are expected to grow more than 11 per cent this year according to the Ministry for Primary Industries.

“This is supported by record harvest levels and ongoing demand for New Zealand logs from China,” said MPI’s policy and trade acting deputy director general, Jarred Mair.

“The Government’s One Billion Trees Programme is another catalyst for investment and changing land use, primarily through increased replanting rates and new production forest area.”

New Zealand’s overall primary industry exports are forecast to rise nearly 11 per cent in the year ending June 2018 to $42.2 billion.

This would be the largest annual increase since 2014, according to the Ministry for Primary Industries’ latest quarterly update.

“Our situation and outlook for primary industries report shows export revenue across all of the sectors has been incredibly strong over the past year, particularly for dairy, meat, and forestry,” says Mr Mair.

“Dairy export revenue is expected to increase by more than 14 per cent in 2018, due to a recovery in prices over the past 12 to 18 months. It is also the result of more milk being processed into higher value products such as infant formula.

“At the same time, the latest numbers show that dairy cow numbers have fallen since 2016. In addition, global red meat prices are expected to increase export

A change in manuka honey definition

The Ministry for Primary Industries has reissued the General Requirements for Bee Products Export Notice.

High returns and new policies are likely to create investment opportunities across the primary industries says Mr Mair.

“For example, high horticulture returns are driving investments in productivity and competition for suitable land. MPI’s Situation and outlook for primary industries report provides a snapshot and forecast for New Zealand’s major primary sectors.

The change means that the legal claim challenging the definition by New Zealand Beekeeping Inc has been resolved.

“Late last week, as part of its legal claim, New Zealand Beekeeping Inc provided additional information about the impact of the definition on multifloral honey. We were also presented with a summary of new analysed test results from an industry science group,” says MPI’s deputy director-general regulation and assurance, Bryan Wilson.

“This information showed that the definition for identifying multifloral manuka honey was initially set too conservatively and would exclude legitimate multifloral honey.

“We hope the industry will see this as a signal of MPI’s ongoing commitment to a collaborative science programme focused on continuous improvement to the science that supports the definition of manuka honey.”

The revised Notice adjusts the level of a chemical marker known as 2 MAP from greater than or equal to 5mg/kg, to greater than or equal to 1mg/kg for the definition for multifloral manuka honey.

There is no change to the definition for monofloral manuka honey, which

When quality is paramount The best pastures to create the best production may vary from region to region and there is no argument that regional experience translates into feed, that provides quality and quantity for feeding livestock.

Here, farmers can find a simple method of assessing pasture quality in the field for every day use on-farm, and in instructing contractors on their vision. Investing in renewal Investing in pasture renewal will improve the production and performance of your land and livestock.

When it comes to sowing new pasture there are a number of key steps to consider including: sowing date, seedbed quality, sowing depth and seed ground coverage.

The sowing date affects pasture establishment, yield and persistence.

Later sowing in cooler autumn conditions means slower establishment due to the cooler temperatures, and greater potential to pug and damage new pastures in winter and spring.

Sowing early in the dry autumns, after February 25, in dry conditions with treated seed is easier for contractors, means faster establishment and more yield, and sets up better pasture persistence.

When establishing a new pasture the process doesn’t stop at sowing the seed and DairyNZ advise that good management gets the best results out of a new pasture and will help it persist.

A pasture should not be considered successfully established until there is a dense, well tillered pasture that has survived a summer. Management through this time has a major impact on its future performance.

Before a new pasture is ready for its first grazing, it needs to pass the ‘pluck test’ to see if plants are firmly rooted, so animals won’t pull them out of the ground. How to do this can be found on the DairyNZ website. The first grazing is about removing the tips of plants to encourage their growth, not about feeding animals. Pastures growth is slow until they are nipped off,

This accelerates both the growth rate and tillering.

It is best to ensure the first graze is in dry conditions to avoid soil and plant damage. Let stock graze the top 3-4 cm off the plants — do not bare the pasture out. If possible graze with lighter young stock — cows can be used, but take care as they may only need an hour or two in the paddock. In good conditions, the first grazing can be 6-8 weeks after

sowing a perennial ryegrass (typically 1-2 weeks sooner for an annual, Italian or hybrid) but dry or cold conditions can prolong this. Apply fertiliser as required — new pasture responds well to nitrogen, and over the first six months, generally two small applications are used for example 25-30 kg N/ha, when conditions allow — not water logged

and soil temperature greater than 7°C. It is important to monitor new pastures closely for emerging weeds. The specific weeds present determine your herbicide choice. New regulations in the dairy industry will see a mandatory overhaul of the region’s milk chiller systems in the coming months and a common topic of talk at the recent field days.

With new regulations on the way demanding milk is chilled faster, and electricity prices prompting a desire for greater efficiency, it could be time to look at a combination of technologies to tackle this vital task.

Some utilise advances in heat exchanger and refrigeration engineering, while others are low-tech solutions, which could render high gains.

However, all options are on the table as new regulations coming into effect on June 1, At this point, a temperature of ten degrees Celsius must be reached within four hours of the commencement of milking, dropping to 6 degrees Celsius within six hours of commencement.

Stored milk must remain in the zone above freezing but at or below 6 degrees Celsius, not rising above 10 degrees Celsius even during subsequent milkings.

This may be a tall order for smaller or less efficient chiller units. However, new options such as ice banks and cold water storage units can assist by generating frosty temperatures with cheaper night rate power, using the cool water to more effectively chill milk than water at environmental

temperatures. Snap chillers, on the other hand, chill a mixture of water and glycol on demand. The backbone of any good refrigeration system remains largely the same, however, from those you’d find in the back of your chest freezer.

Like the chilling units found in air conditioners and fridges, technology has improved the efficiency of chillers in recent years, so an upgrade now may be best in the long run, rather than extending the life of less efficient existing models.

One simple energy saving possibility is still only used by around one-in-five kiwi farms.

That’s the option to thermally wrap the milk storage tank itself, creating a thermos flask-like effect.

As milk chiller power use accounts for roughly a third of the electric bill on dairy farms, this is an increasingly popular step for those with applicable chiller setups. A handy calculator tool

Handling effluent is key Effluent can be a major issue in the dairying compliance states and some suitable options are outlined in the Regional Water and Soil Plan for Northland for land application systems suited to the region, under the auspices of the regional council.

Effluent is a major contaminant, which can cause degradation of our streams, harbours and estuaries. Investment

by Northland farmers is improving the status of our waterways.

When planning a land application system, it is important to understand the factors that influence the type of system that is best suited to a particular farm and an understanding of soil types is vital to ensure sufficient storage is available. Good management of effluent can help to protect the environment now, and in the future. The Regional Water and Soil Plan details the transition from discharge to land management effluent systems that has wide benefits to the farm’s bottom line.

Among these, are a reduction in fertiliser bills by controlling when and where to irrigate valuable nutrients.

The plan states that ‘The variances throughout the region, including extreme weather events and challenging topography, means that each farming system is unique.’

‘Land is one of a farmer’s greatest assets, and managing it productively and sustainably will add further value to the farm. Part of future-proofing New Zealand’s unique landscape and waterways will help ensure we can

continue to farm in a productive and sustainable way.’

The Sustainable Dairying Water Accord outlines good management practices. It positions the sector to cope with a future that will focus on managing water within limits, recognising that expectations of performance will evolve over time. Most Northland dairy farmers take pride in keeping their waterways healthy and want to protect this valuable resource.

Storage facility volumes can be estimated using two storage calculators, the Northland Regional Council Effluent Storage Calculator or the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator; both are accepted, but it is important to have an understanding of council expectations when using the Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator. At the dairy shed the easiest way to estimate water use is to install a water meter, now a requirement under the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord.

The type of irrigators suited to Northland vary — dairy effluent, is known as a valuable resource that can increase pasture production and reduce fertiliser costs. It contains organic matter, nutrients including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and also bacteria (such as faecal coliforms, E coli and campylobacter).

grew up on a farm until I was eight years old and then moved into Blairlogie, a forestry township near Tinui,” says pig hunter Sadie Waru.

LIVESTOCK statement that has shaped my life. After I stuck my first pig — an 89lb boar, my life turned upside down.

“My weekends were full of bush bashing and sticking hogs. I would turn up to work with gorse pricks in my hair and bags under my eyes but also with a full heart and a desire to hit the hills again that afternoon.”

Sadie says she thanks Briggs for her experience because he welcomed her into her new life with open arms.

“He knew I had the determination and strength to hunt alongside him. His words of advice were always the same ‘just guts it out babe — you know you can do this’.

“He helped me gain the confidence that I didn't even know was available and I did it. Carrying pigs can be difficult for me because I only weigh 66kg, but I have learnt if you put your mind to it, and chuck some effort in too, you can do anything no matter what your size is.”

She says working closely with a pack of dogs is what sets them aside from other big game hunters.

“Our dogs are my closest and most trusted companions — we lean on each other and back each other up, and they are without a doubt my family.

“Briggs got into hunting when he was on a ranger trainee course for DOC. He met guys that were hunters and joined them to keep busy whilst on course. It took a few years of going out and learning off them and then he got his own dogs and it went well.

“We have good quality walkie talkies

Sadie’s dogs are trusted companions when she is hunting and they are part of her family unit

for safety and we make sure to use them if we split up. We also have Garmin gps units and can track each other and the dogs, and they have an emergency setting.

“We know someone that has had to use the emergency call. It is important to make sure it is charged and that you have spare batteries, and always let people know where you are going and your expected home time.”

The meat gets butchered professionally and is often given to friends, family or the community.

“We are part of the pig hunting club and we get approached from people needing food, including maraes for funerals. We join together and donate as

“I love the peace in the bush — you hear the birds and your dogs walking along, it is beautiful. It can clear your head and give you clarity to problems you may have.

“A lot of female hunters I meet love being out there getting their own food for their family. We hunt everywhere, Northland, Hawkes Bay, Kaingaroa forest, the Rimutakas, or the Tararuas and beyond.

“I would be content to be Briggs’ hunting partner for life. I flip, stick, carry and cook the pigs. We woman hunters

Kia managed to shock and surprise everybody last year with the arrival of the speedy, slick and dynamically impressive Stinger, their answer to the best of Europe’s grand tourers. Now they’re back to surprise the world again, with a touring machine of a whole different stripe. Enter the Kia Niro, a combination of some of the hottest trends in modern motoring, and a definite one to watch.

When looking at the Niro without context, it’s easy to assume that the Korean automakers simply wanted something small, compact and sports utility shaped to fit into their range between the quirky Soul and the popular Sportage.

In an era when even Range Rover has a ‘crossover’ and the Toyota CH-R is the new Corolla, it makes sense. But that’s not what the Niro is all about. Sure, it’s got that nifty ‘fun size’ sports utility shape, the same voluminous cabin with clever cubbies and storage spaces, the same higher driving position and nice safety features. But it’s also a plugin hybrid.

With Elon Musk at the door and the mass production of Tesla cars at hand — soon — the addition of a crossover hybrid hits all the zeitgeist buttons.

This particular combination of internal combustion and voltage power means that you can drive for 55 kilometres without using a drop of the go-juice, and even on the open highway you’ll sip

As data and information about the most minute details of soil hydration and nutrient loading becomes a standard tool in the farmer’s arsenal, precision placement has become a key factor for fertiliser applicators. From a ‘shotgun’ approach in the distant past, the science of sowing crops has also come a long way, adopting a modern version of an ancient bright idea.

The ancient Chinese invented the seed drill, thanks in part to the availability of hollow, strong bamboo tubes. Pushing the seed to the right depth in the soil, they found, made all the difference. Modern seed drills are a far cry from these early origins, boasting precision computer-guided control, massive capacity, and the means to open a furrow, pneumatically apply seed to the right depth at the right spacing, and then close the furrow, sometimes even applying a small dose of nutrients as well. It’s a great all-round system for seeding success, and a top example in the current market is the Gigante, produced by Maschio Gaspardo.

This Italian company operate factories not just in their home country — where they were established back in the early 1960s — but also in the vast emerging markets of India and China.

Making seed drills to feed the literal millions of these burgeoning economies, means they know how to make them big and make them reliable. The Gigante lives up to its name, but is able to fold up for highway transit. Where it makes its mark is in precision seed depth in adverse conditions, using a cast steel guide wheel and its own impressive weight along with tungsten carbide scrapers to conquer rocky or wet fields.

Combine this with the ability to change seeding depth easily, a massive capacity, and pneumatic power to literally ‘fire’ each seed right on target, and the whole Gigante system improves the chances of strong and healthy crops by a vast factor over broadcasting methods.
