The winners of this year’s Emerging Primary Industries Leaders Scholarship are Julia Jones of KPMG and Jason Te Brake of Miraka.

In her role, Julia combines her practical knowledge of farming and business to help clients across the primary industries.

Jason is a chartered accountant and has worked on brand and channel development and for the last two years he has served as chair of New Zealand Young Farmers.

“This scholarship recognises the importance of promoting strong leadership within the primary industries.

It encourages those who have shown a commitment to the primary industries and have the potential to help guide the sector in the future,” said Mr Guy. “The Sustainable Farming Fund supports the primary sector’s own forward thinking and Kiwi ingenuity — which in turn helps keep New Zealand ahead of the game.

“1,000 projects have now been funded since the fund was initiated in 2000. This represents around $150 million in government funding alongside a significant level of sector support.

“The fund has supported projects as diverse as reducing nutrient run off on lowland farms, reducing use of antimicrobials when managing mastitis, and increasing the market share for New Zealand olive oil.”

Ms Upston says much of the success of the fund is due to its grass-roots nature. “Each project brings together farmers, growers and foresters to work alongside scientists and researchers to solve a problem or seize an opportunity.

Julia and Jason will attend the Te Hono Stanford Bootcamp — a week-long programme held at Stanford University in California, USA. The boot camp is mainly for chief executives or people who hold senior governance roles within the primary sector.

Ms Upston says Te Hono Stanford Bootcamp is an opportunity for primary industry leaders to think about and test various ways to build the sector.

“For the scholarship recipients, the boot camp will be a unique chance to build networks with sector leaders and contribute to the future direction of New Zealand’s primary industries.”

The Emerging Primary Industries Leaders Scholarship is now in its second year, and is supported by the Ministry for Primary Industries, AGMARDT (the Agricultural and Marketing Research and Development Trust) and Te Hono.

A commemorative booklet which spotlights 33 projects from across all 17 years of the fund — available on the MPI website was also launched at the event.

“The National Statement of Science Investment 20152025 sets out a vision for a highly dynamic science system that enriches New Zealand through excellent research that creates impact. The Government invested an estimated $428 million in primary sector research in 2016, while the industry carried out R&D worth $266 million.

“The Roadmap recognises the important role that the primary sector plays in our economy, and ensures the government, industry, and researchers Paul Goldsmith, Science and Innovation Minister are working collaboratively to achieve the best results for New Zealand through high quality science.”

It provides a shared view across the primary sector on the science and technology needs for the sector — and where science investment needs to be focussed. This document will guide the primary sector’s science direction for the next 10 to 20 years.

“W

e both always loved gardening and permaculture principles — so we thought let’s do something that will utilise the land,” said Jenny. With

both already having vegetable gardens, they were keen to do something different. “We just dived straight into it” she said. When first starting out, they decided not to do weddings as they can

be “too crazy and stressful.” However, friends started to approach them for weddings and before long the summer was over and they had done quite a few.

“We were really impressed with ourselves that we were able to pull them off and people were happy with them, so now whatever people want, we’ll figure it out,” said Jenny.

“Our aim is to grow everything ourselves eventually, but at certain times of the year we have to outsource flowers from local suppliers and other growers. We have really enjoyed connecting with other small scale farmer florists and keen home gardeners in the

Waikato region, who happily provide us with material that is missing from our fields. We have also been approached by caterers and chefs to supply them with edible flowers, so that is another area we wish to develop further,” said Kristel.

They also plan to grow a whole field of roses, as they are a popular wedding choice.

Kristel and Jenny also love being creative, so the floristry part came naturally. “It’s not actually too hard it turns out. It’s just taken practise — and as soon as you spend time arranging them it adds more value,” said Jenny.

“We could just work on growing the

JENNY AND KRISTEL’S BOUQUET CREATIONS flowers, but because we are farmer florists we tend to get a lot of orders as the word is getting out.” As well as being booked for weddings and events, they currently supply local cafes with a weekly flower subscription, supply the local Four Square with bouquets and have a popular roadside honesty box stall.

When it comes to choosing what to grow, Jenny says that they work with the seasons and are keen to grow anything and everything. So as winter is coming they are planting a lot of hellebores, chrysanthemums and proteas.

But they also make use of everything, like wild carrot weed, rushes and foliage.

“Anything interesting as we don’t like to keep it simply flowers,” said Jenny.

The pair are passionate about growing things sustainably and organically.

“We add as much organic matter as we can to keep the soil really healthy, like compost, manure, and green and

brown matter. The lack of chemicals really shows in our flowers. They sort of hum with a different vibration,” said Jenny.

Days are varied, but they typically start with getting the children off to school or kindy, and housework, as both women have husbands and three children. Then with their flowers it involves anything from arranging bouquets, delivering weekly subscriptions, planting, picking and spreading mulch.

Their combined three acres are on a north facing hill which goes down into a swamp.

Their flowers are dispersed all around the property. Jenny said that “it was just grass when we came here ten years ago. We’ve been planting it up with trees and fruit and now we are just trying to fill every little space with flower beds and foliage, with lots of colours and textures.” Although it can be a challenge to fit the farm and floristry around their

You learn off each other and you reflect the way you work.” Jenny and Kristel love the diversity, flexibility and creativity of

BY ANN MORGAN THE ALEXANDER FAMILY HAVE OWNED THEIR 1,250 ACRE SHEEP AND BEEF PROPERTY IN HINUERA SINCE 1978 WHEN THE BROTHERS MOVED FROM SOUTH TARANAKI. LITTLE DID THEY REALISE THE PROPERTY WOULD BECOME A TOURISM DESTINATION.

“M

y dad and uncle were sheep farming inland from Hawera and they were looking for an opportunity to get out of the steep hill country of Taranaki.

This property became available so they purchased it together,” says Russell Alexander.

“My family and my cousins grew up here as typical farm kids and we had a lot of fun chasing sheep, shearing, haymaking, docking, cutting thistle and hoeing weeds. We all worked hard and it was a good upbringing. We rode motorbikes and leant to drive on the farm.”

It is a Romney sheep stud and the brothers were part of the original Advanced Romney Development Group which has been going since the early

70s and this group are the leaders in facial eczema resistance genetics.

The property is home to 4,500 ewes, 1,500 replacements and 6,000 lambs as well as the rams.

“Depending on the time of the year we can have 3-400 Angus beef cattle.

My father has always been an Angus man,” says Russell.

The family have been leading in facial eczema recording and research for many years.

“No-one can say that they are ‘totally’ eczema free but there have been years where there has been bad outbreaks and we have come through very clear.

Our genetics certainly have got an advantage over the disease.

“Our cousins run another sheep farm not far away from the home farm.

We lamb later in the year, through to September and we take our lambs through to the winter markets rather than get rid of them pre-Christmas.”

One day in 1998, a location scout for film director Sir Peter Jackson knocked on the door whilst the family were watching an NPC rugby game.

“The scout for the Lord of the Rings movie came to Waikato because they needed a spot with lush green hills and fertile land and the area is known for this,” Russell says.

“They wanted a tranquil place for the set of the Shire and they spotted our property and hired a plane and saw the lake and the big pine tree that towered over it which is adjacent to a big hill, and that started their interest in our farm.

Six weeks later the film directors and staff spent a day sketching and photographing the property and the negotiation process began. Bag End now sits on top of that hill, overlooking the ‘Party Tree’, as that pine was named for the movie.

“We signed a contract in 1999, and the army arrived to start the earthworks and construction of the site. It was a good exercise for their military training.

“As part of the original agreement we discussed the opportunity of a tourism venture when the movie was complete.

Tourists like to see the sheep in action and being connected to the farm makes it very authentic.”

Russell says they run as separate entities. He runs Hobbiton and the main farm is still a commercial sheep and beef farm, run by his brother Craig. The two businesses are independent and successfully cohabit together.

“Most of our experiences have been wonderful and very positive. We have had different royal families as well as interesting and diverse people from around the world, including movie stars and cruise ship visitors come to visit, and we have had events with 300 staff in themed costumes for functions.

“Going from being a family run farm to having the chance to be involved in such a project is not something that happens every day. We have evolved and grown with it. You have to take the experiences that come along and you develop yourself as you go.

“It is about making sure you are aware when you are being presented with opportunities, and when you are you need to grab them. We are proud to contribute to the community and provide employment for more than 200 staff that are mostly local.”

“We love living here and believe life is about experiences and the Hobbiton journey will continue. We want to be happy as we develop and grow the venture — it is not over yet.

“We are the caretakers of the project and it will be here for many years to come.”

At 26 years old Sarah Atkinson is back in the rural setting where she grew up. Only this time she is managing the five dairy farms her family owns near Matamata, on call seven-days-a-week and loving every minute of it.

rom a young age Sarah acquired a taste for farming and following in the footsteps of her parents she now finds herself forging a career managing the family farms while they spend time with a new rural venture in Chile. After studying a BComAg at

owned Chilean based company called Manuka which is focussed on high quality sustainable dairy production.

Eventually talks about moving to Chile began, conveniently just as Sarah was ready to return home and get stuck into a new challenge. Her parents discussed overseeing the management duties in their absence.

Sarah saw this is opportunity as being a great lead into farming.

In July 2015, Steve and Trish finally made the move to take on consultancy roles for the world’s largest grass based dairy operation in one location situated 1,000km south of Santiago.

It is here on these flat volcanic soils that 31,000 cows are milked through 43 cow sheds.

“Our overseas role ties in nicely with letting Sarah have space to develop herself as a person. Leadership, management and supervisory skills are all part of her growth.”

Sarah has since been supervising the day-to-day running of the properties and nine staff on the five farms.

Sarah’s days typically start in the office where she is kept busy for a few hours before heading out and catching up with the farm managers.

Depending on the time of the year and work taking place, there is various discussions and catch ups with bank managers, accountants, stock agents and fertiliser reps.

“This side of the business I really enjoy — working out solutions to help sharpen our ways of thinking so we can improve the way we are running the farms.

“I’ve got a lot of support around me.

Townsend, a mentor who comes over once a week and in detail, we go over each of the farms looking at cow condition and feeding levels.”

It’s this support that Steve and Trish are comforted by.

“We are proud of how Sarah has developed in this role — it will open opportunities for her,” said Steve.

At the end of each week Sarah compiles a report to email to her parents so they are aware of the progress and goings-on within each of the farms.

“We’re pretty lucky we’ve got such a good team working for us. The people on the farms love the dairy industry and it almost makes my role easier — they are passionate about their work,” she said.

Sarah is aware that “taking a breather away from the farm” is important and still manages to fit in time to play netball, attend weekly trainings and Friday night games.

“I grew up in Matamata but after leaving for so long I actually didn’t think

I knew a lot of people, so I got involved with netball last season and met quite a few girls through that and decided to carry it on this year.”

She also tries to spend a decent amount of time over summer at Lake Rotoiti with her three other siblings, parents and friends.

The council has mailed a brochure to more than 10,000 landowners in the catchment outlining key components of the proposed plan, and what landowners can be thinking about now to ensure they are well placed when final decisions are anticipated to be made next year.

While the proposed plan still has a hearings process to go through, landowners will need to be planning to complete registration of their property with the council or provide a nitrogen reference point (NRP), as currently proposed in the plan.

“We still have a hearings process to go through and parts of the plan may change as a result of that. What we are saying to landowners is if they understand what is currently proposed, the information they may need to provide, or the work they may need to carry out on their properties, they will be well placed when final decisions are made,” says chief executive Vaughan Payne.

Mr Payne said as part of the submission process the council is working with industry and sector organisations to jointly identify areas of the plan which could be improved.

Nowadays if you’re a homeowner, you might get help from your local council or bank, and some suppliers do give a reasonable discount so it pays to shop around.

While winter means colder temperatures and higher heating costs there are simple steps towards more comfortable living as the weather turns chilly.

The best time to cope with colder temperatures is when building or renovating. Keep the winter temperatures in mind and apart from obvious insulation properties, there are advantages in planning ahead, where furnishing can play a part.

Walls are better insulators than glass, but they still get cold and let out lots of heat. And believe it or not, you can reduce energy loss by covering them with picture or mirrors. Even a simple

poster adds an extra layer of insulating air, raising internal surface temperatures by around 1°C and cutting lost energy by a quarter. Thus it is evident that good quality wallpapers will have a similar effect. In fact well-stocked bookshelves are a great insulator. One interior designer quips that thermally at least, printed books are far superior to their electronic counterparts.

Design for efficient doors and windows too. Doors can let in draughts, and being thin and sometimes glazed can be very poor insulators, falling to 10–15°C on cold nights. Good solid doors, even a door curtain can eliminate pretty much all the heat loss. The same applies to windows, and the extra expense of double glazing could well save you money in the long run as heating costs will be that much lighter when the utility bill arrives.

Design for the colder times The best building site for a warm, energy efficient home gets plenty of sun, particularly from the north, and is sheltered from prevailing winds so the choice of a section is the first step towards a warm home.

You can easily find out how much sun a site gets at different times of the year by using an app like Sun Seeker on your smartphone or tablet — good advice from EnergywiseNZ. On clear winter days, the sun sends around 500 watts of heat through each square-metre of unshaded north-facing window. A home designed to harness the sun’s free warmth is placed on the sunniest part of the section to access the most sun into the main living areas with service areas on the south side.

Trap in the free heat from the sun using thermal mass — like a concrete floor, exposed to the sun so it soaks up heat during the day and releases it when temperatures drop at night.

Select appropriately sized and positioned windows — moderately large on the north-facing side of the house, smaller on the east and west sides, and smallest on the south side.

Think about how much space you need on a day-to-day basis. Smaller houses are cheaper to build, easier to heat and use a lot less energy.

The more complex a home’s shape is, the more floor, wall and ceiling area it has to lose heat through. Therapy for osteoarthritis Part 1 Everyone is different and this is certainly true when using nutritional therapy for osteoarthritis. Sometimes these differences are obvious — helping someone in their 80s with advanced arthritis is different from someone in their 40s who have had their first joint niggles.

Other differences though are not so obvious. In some people joint pain is more from inflammation while in others more from the actual joint deterioration. This series of columns looks at some personal stories and the methods we used to bring improvements.

I have just spoken with someone with significant osteoarthritis. He is in his 80s and has long term osteoarthritis in his ankles, knees and hips which caused significant pain with restricted mobility. He rated his discomfort at 7/10 and was faced with further steady deterioration.

Primary exports are booming Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said the primary sector is forecast for a bumper year ahead after some challenging past seasons of wet conditions, earthquakes, cyclones, and volatile global commodity prices.

The Ministry for Primary Industries released the latest Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries at the National Fieldays.

“MPI are forecasting that primary sector exports will grow to $41.6 billion in the year to June 2018 — this is an increase of 9.1 percent and would be the highest level ever,” said Mr Guy. “Strong forestr y and dairy prices, combined with increasing production of apples, wine, and kiwifruit have underpinned growth for the year ending June 2017.

“Dairy prices for most products are forecast to remain at or near current levels as global demand and supply rebalance, while high forestry prices will continue to encourage record harvest levels.

“Horticulture exports are also forecast to continue their strong growth across a range of wine, fruit, and vegetable products. Meat and wool exports are forecast to recover to $8.5 billion following an almost 10 percent fall in export values for the year ending June 2017.”

New market opportunities and diversification into higher value products such as chilled meat, retail ready products, and nutraceuticals would help to further increase the value of the primary sector exports.

Blueprint for partnership

Passengers on quad bikes Worksafe New Zealand has clarified the circumstances in which it is acceptable to carry passengers on single-seat quad bikes in consultation with Federated Farmers, Beef + Lamb NZ, and DairyNZ. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, persons conducting a business or undertaking such as farming must identify and manage risks arising from work, so far as is reasonably practicable.

WorkSafe’s position on quad bikes is that single-seat quad bikes should not normally be used to carry passengers.

“WorkSafe’s guidance is that you should use the safest vehicle for the job. When carrying a passenger this would mean using a vehicle specifically designed for more than one person,” said Al McCone, WorkSafe sector lead — agriculture.

WorkSafe acknowledges that farmers and others using quad bikes for work need the policy clarified so they clearly understand what is acceptable in terms of carrying passengers.

It is only acceptable when there is no reasonable alternative having considered factors such as availability

of alternative vehicles, terrain, and rider and passenger capability.

In those cases where a passenger is taken, appropriate mitigation measures must be taken — including limiting speed, briefing the passenger on best practice riding, and avoiding unsuitable terrain.

If carrying a passenger on a quad bike is a recurring necessary practice, you should be looking at acquiring an alternative vehicle suitable for the circumstances as soon as is practicable.

The clarification also stipulates that carrying a child as a passenger on a quad bike creates a particular set of risks that you need to consider.

As with the general principle, you may only carry a child as a passenger if there is no reasonable alternative and following an assessment of the related risk and risk-mitigation measures.

“This is a good example of WorkSafe and farmers working together to find practical solutions. We all want fewer accidents and injuries on our farms, so the important thing is that we always consider risk and this guidance emphasises that,” said Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive Sam McIvor.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) and the Meat Industry Association (MIA) are presenting the sector’s priorities to all political parties ahead of this year’s general election.

The two organisations represent New Zealand sheep and beef farmers and meat processors, marketers and exporters, and have outlined in a manifesto a set of key priority policy areas on which to base a stronger partnership with government.

“The sheep and beef sector is our second largest goods exporter and a significant contributor to the New Zealand economy,” said MIA chief executive Tim Ritchie.

“The sector contributed $7 billion to New Zealand’s total GDP last year and we aim to increase this in coming years through partnership and collaboration with government and others.

“Trade is a key priority for our export-focussed sector as more than 90 per cent production is exported, valued at $7.5 billion last year. We are looking to work with government to further the trade liberalisation agenda including by addressing nontariff barriers that plague the sector.”

B+LNZ Chief Executive, Sam McIvor said the sector plays an important

role in rural communities, employing around 80,000 people (directly and indirectly) and making it New Zealand’s largest manufacturing industry.

“The environment is a significant focus for the sector, with managing our impact on water quality a key priority, alongside climate change and biodiversity,” he said.

“We are already undertaking substantial work in the environment space, but need government to work alongside the sector in developing policy equipping farmers with the right knowledge, tools and support for continuous improvement.”

Other priority areas outlined in the manifesto include animal welfare, food safety, biosecurity, innovation, employment relations, immigration, health and safety, and training.

The two organisations will continue to engage and collaborate with government to achieve better outcomes for the sector and New Zealand.

We are now starting the dry period. Another season has gone by and it is time to refresh and take life a little easier.

Some of you may even go away on a holiday. Cows are gone for the winter or, if we have them on the run-off, we need only feed them and leave them to it till tomorrow when we must feed them again. We don’t have to get up so early in the morning for milking and apart from the air temperatures life is good. We all need breaks and time away to refresh.

It is the same for a cow. They need a dry period. They need a time of rest.

They need to be able to lay down in a dry comfortable place out of the rain and the wind.

I have said in previous articles that cows are lacking resting time under normal circumstances during the milking season. Even on the best farms, cows are being deprived of resting time because there simply isn’t enough time in a day for a cow. I know it sounds silly but our dairy cows are over-worked during the milking season. That means that the rest during the dry period is even more important.

However, when I drive through the countryside during winter I see many cows on winter crops — the management of which is critical for the cows’ wellbeing considering the cows that have died because of mismanagement with fodder beet. But, apart from the potential nutrition problems there is also a problem due to the lack of proper resting facilities. You may think that this just doesn’t make sense because the cows don’t do anything other than eating and resting, but look at cow behaviour in the paddock.

We all know that a well-fed cow’s normal behaviour during the day is

grazing, drinking, laying down and resting. Cows don’t normally spend a lot of time standing. If they do there is a problem. The cow may be sick or it is raining or it is too hot and the cow is under heat stress. Now, when we look at cows on winter crops we see them spending a lot of time standing. This is not necessarily because they are sick or because it is raining. It is because there is nowhere for them to lay down and be comfortable especially when

it gets muddy. Even in those muddy conditions, cows will lay down but only if they just can’t stand any longer. Why is this important? Because tired cows don’t perform. Tired cows are under severe stress. Tired, stressed cows are much more susceptible to lameness.

Sometimes the difference in numbers of lame cows from one season to the next is due to the wintering conditions. I know that cost needs to be kept to a minimum to run a profitable farming operation but if you want to calculate the true cost of the different farming systems you need to include the lameness cost during the upcoming milking season as well as the empty rate and mastitis cost.

Much more research needs to be done in this area to get a better understanding of the true cost. It is quite likely that the cheapest system may be the costliest.

Crossbred prices remain sluggish Market conditions for crossbred wools have continued to be extremely tough with returns delivering less than cost of production in many cases.

On the flip-side, fine wool prices have remained buoyant as demand appears to be outstripping supply big-time. For many mid micron types, market interest has also remained positive, particularly with the small volumes of these types offered for sale during the past few weeks. As new season’s pre-lamb shorn wools begin to filter onto the market, many producers of strong wool who may not have been exposed to the market place for almost twelve months, could struggle to come to terms with the low pricing structure which has evolved during that time period.

At recent wool auctions crossbred prices have remained sluggish and, in particular, an obvious lack of interest for poor scouring colour and/or very short second shear and/or medium-to-high levels of vegetable fault has become

apparent as buyers are more selective with their purchases, a probable reflection of a distinct slim order book particularly from Chinese mills. The majority of buyers have shown most interest in well prepared, good colour, sound tensile strength wools with a minimum staple length of approximately seventy-five millimetres.

Halfbred and finer Corriedale types have received good support from the trade recently, buoyed by the very solid global fine wool market. Well prepared halfbred types drew widespread interest from buyers at all Christchurch wool auctions during May with most micron categories improving slightly in value at each offering perhaps a reflection of the limited supply available at this time of year, and with so many clips in recent years having either succumbed to

crossbred sheep or a complete change in land use, such as dairy or viticulture.

The very small quantity of merino wool types available to the exporting trade in New Zealand during the past few weeks have drawn fantastic interest, with the also small number of vendors mostly ecstatic about the returns for their, mainly, short and or oddment types.

Australian wool brokers and exporters have also reported a continued improvement for their wools, with only a couple of sales during the past month or so experiencing a slight easing in price before regaining the lost ground.

At the time of writing there had been some publicity condemning pollution via plastic micro-fibres ejected into the seas around our planet, generally as a bye-product of clothes washing. At a time when natural products appear to be enjoying support around the world,

often driven by younger folk who insist on sustainable consumer products, wool surely has a great opportunity to win ground as a fibre of choice both for apparel but also interior furnishings.

Wool, being flame retardant, biodegradable, and a naturally renewable resource, in my opinion, ticks plenty of boxes for everyone.

The Campaign for Wool has focussed on all of those properties and is doing a great job of promoting wool across these sectors. At this time of year we could all do much better promoting woolen garments to our families to be worn simply for warmth.

The term ‘fleece’ is used often for garments made from entirely man-made fibres, but with an obvious connotation of natural warmth. Does that annoy you?

It sure annoys me.

The age of the station wagon is over — the era of the crossover SUV is firmly here to stay.

But what does that mean if you still want the convenience of that long, flat boot space and the lower operating costs of a stretched sedan? Is there room in the new world of bigger rims and jacked up ride heights for something to truly usurp the kind of cars which took us to innumerable childhood camping holidays?

Ssangyong are among those who say yes — and they’ve brought something new to the table to back up their assertion. Taking the platform of their break-out hit — the funky, compact little Tivoli — the Korean automakers have given it a tweak and a stretch, creating the new Tivoli XLV. The original combined everything the world enjoyed in the original supermini — funky twotone paintwork, crisp retro-inspired lines, nimble handling and a low fuel bill. Now it’s been given the kind of extra boost in space which we used to see in big Commodore and Falcon sedans when they became the station wagon or estate model.

This renders an impressive 720 litres of boot space, with the option for even more when the rear seats fold flat. In standard configuration that means room for five with plenty of gear — the

ideal family touring machine. Dad’s old Valiant may have been twice the size, but this modern alternative packs in more comfort, more technology, and importantly a ton of safety systems unheard of in the days of cassette tapes and tartan blanket seat covers.

As well as a full suite of airbags and an electronic stability programme, electronic brake-force distribution and anti-lock brakes work together to ensure that the front and rear wheels brake proportionately according to the number of occupants and the weight of the onboard load.

The economical 1.6 litre engine under the hood delivers 7.6 litres per 100km efficiency while still producing 126 horsepower — in a vehicle which is light and agile in city traffic despite its carry capacity.

With the option to select a steering mode from comfortable to sporty, once you take to the highway this is no mundane people mover.

Ssangyong have made a name as a clever alternative, and with the original Tivoli they made a bold statement, claiming a new sub-sector in the market.
