Flood and land protection Waikato Regional Council is calling for landowners who want a voice in its flood protection programmes in the Lower Waikato and Waihou-Piako zones and land drainage programmes in the Waikato and Thames Valley catchments.

In November last year, the council decided not to re-establish eight catchment committees and four drainage subcommittees due to costs.

However, councillor Stu Husband, chair of the River and Catchment Management Committee, recognised the need for advisory subcommittees in the areas of the Waikato where there are significant assets.

Two advisory subcommittees will be set up to meet on matters relevant to the council’s flood protection programmes in the Lower Waikato and Waihou-Piako zones. Drainage advisory subcommittees will be established in each of the Waikato and Thames Valley catchments.

“It became clear that in areas where landowners paid a significant amount of money through targeted rates for land drainage or flood protection, they needed the opportunity to be able to provide advice, support and feedback to the council’s operations,” said Cr Husband.

“It became clear that we did need some formal process in place, but one that’s not going to come at a big cost,” Cr Husband said.

To cur tail meeting costs, subcommittee members will not be compensated. The subcommittees

will comprise Waikato regional councillors, iwi, landowner, territorial authority and key stakeholder/landowner appointees. They will advise the council’s River and Catchment Management Committee.

Appointments will be made every three years to coincide with the council triennial elections. The council is looking for enthusiastic people who have good relevant community networks to share flood protection/ land drainage advisor y subcommittee discussions and relate the outcomes of the River and Catchment Management Committee.

They will need relevant experience, such as being on a board or member of a community group involved in environmental work and are wanting to contribute in a positive way to the work the council does in its communities.

People who are regional ratepayers within, or having responsibility for, the geographical area represented by the advisory group, be willing to accept membership as a volunteer without compensation and can meet

Hamish and Lisa Lile discovered first hand how valuable the services of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was, when their daughter Hayley was 12 years old and mauled by a cow just days after fundraising for the organisation five years ago.

“H

ayley is now 18 years old.

At the time I was coaching netball and was mimicking the Minion characters. Hamish decided to paint a bale of hay with the Minions in my garden as a joke,” says mum Lisa.

“We ended up with a family of Minions and placed them on a trailer so school children could see them from the bus. People were jumping fences to get photos, so we welded a collection box to the trailer and raised $800 in two weeks.

“We donated the money to the Westpac Air Ambulance because it flies over our property all the time. The team visited the farm on the Friday and on the Sunday Hayley was helping

me move stock. I was riding beside her on the motorbike when a cow’s behaviour changed.

“I told Hayley to stand still, but in a split second, the animal turned and attacked, throwing her up against the back of a trailer, relentless in its pursuit.

The cow took a breather and Hayley tried to scramble onto my bike, but the cow renewed its attack.

“I was working on pure adrenaline and managed to kick it in the neck to release Hayley and dragged her on to the bike. I headed to a gateway with the cow in pursuit.

“I pulled Hayley off the bike, picked her up under my arm and leapt over the gate to safety. Hayley collapsed on the

My heart was sinking at the thought of the injuries she sustained. The rescue helicopter was landing on our property as the ambulance arrived. To get here so quickly was incredible.”

The paramedics quickly dispelled Lisa’s fears that her actions during the drama had done more harm to Hayley than good.

“Her injuries ranged from massive internal and external bruising, ligament

damage to her hip and pelvic area and a mild brain injury. Hamish helped get Hayley into the back of the chopper, and the crew took great care of her and were just spectacular.“ The trauma team thought they would be faced with someone in a coma or needing life support when they heard of the victim being flown to Waikato Hospital.

“Our experience with everybody involved was just phenomenal. I flew with Hayley, and you knew the team was in control of the situation. They had this aura about them. Words cannot explain their professionalism.

distracted and took away the panic. I would drop my hat in a heartbeat and do another fundraiser.”

It has been a long journey with Hayley for her recovery.

“I know the care she received from St John and the helicopter staff helped minimise the trauma. Had we not had the air ambulance things would have been different. People take the organisation for granted until you need them. I never thought I would have to use them in a million years. You think the rescue choppers are for traumatic events way out in the boondocks, but they are for anybody who needs urgent assistance to get to hospital fast.”

Rescue helicopters across the country can be airborne in 10 minutes and, in a life or death situation, this speed and agility can make all the difference.

The timely assistance they provide can reduce disability and improve survival — the sooner treatment begins, the greater chance of patient recovery.

“I remember bits and pieces of the event,” says Hayley. “I remember being on the ground and thinking my elbow was broken. I remember I had an itchy nose and did not want needles in me.

“I appreciate the little things like wiggling my pinky or toe.

“It is the things people don’t think much about. I am so grateful for the

small things that are now big. I left school and am working at CRV Ambreed.

They allow me to work to my ability as a customer support consultant doing herd recording and will train to do the herd testing records and other things in the future.

“I am still in recovery and will always have issues. My brain injury set me back, but I couldn’t have done it without the Westpac Air Ambulance staff. We still catch up with the pilot and crew and take them fudge to say thanks. Their care is impeccable, and they deserve all the support they can get.”

RURAL KIWIS

Mark Cameron farms at Ruawai in Kaipara, and he is a passionate advocate for New Zealand’s rural industries, which he says may improve because of the recent pandemic.

“A

round 1988, as a young adult, I secured my first farm job here in Ruawai and now own two dairy farms in the area. My wife Jodie and I have a blended family of four children, and our business is milking cows and living the country dream,” says Mark.

The couple farm predominantly Friesian cattle and a few mixed breeds on their 285 acre property.

“We are a grade two farm with grass silage, and a bit of kernel. We don’t grow maize due to the land size. We work as efficiently as possible and operate close to budget.”

Last year, Mark instigated the Farmer Pride rallies to rural small towns across the country.

“I saw the egregious nature of what was happening to provincial New Zealand and was saddened by the lack of desire and self-belief of farmers. I saw first-hand for nearly a decade the nature of the constant government bureaucracy getting in the way of everyday kiwis in rural New Zealand.

Mark believes farmers across the country can be proud of producing quality food for the world

The Farmer Pride rallies were started as a way to support rural New Zealand that, and I wanted to show the greater audience that we would always be here to feed them.

“We had great progress and gained momentum but were saddened by the apathy farmers have a lot of, as they are so often browbeaten.

“They have a lot of stuff in their lives.

It would have been great for the rally to gather more traction. Now, in fact, what Covid-19 has done is brought the importance of farmers to the world as food producers.

“The world is now grateful and no longer looking through a macrobiotic lens at us.

“All through the virus, we have continued to feed our nation and other

afforestation of large parts of rural New Zealand to mitigate climate change, which had specifically been mandated.

The Paris Climate Accord was specifically where I saw an affront to farmers’ rights.

“The idea started as a cowshed conversation with my partner. I had had enough of farmers taking their own lives due to the enormity of the tasks they had to undertake or ultimately having to sell their farms with small businesses being affected.

“People arrived in Dargaville and Ruawai on their tractors as symbology because every day, of every month, of every year we are on them. Tractors help bring food to New Zealand and the world. We are the best in the world at

nations, and now the pure illustration of that has come to light.

“Now we are stabilised again as a part of national pride, and we are more than happy to be part of the society that gets the country going again. The general consensus in the wider public has been very positive.

“The growers, including kumara, have carried on and were harvesting during the lockdown and have been as active as they have ever been. They made the necessary covid disease operational standards and did everything to carry on farming as we know we have a nation to feed.

“The crops have to come out, cows need to be milked, and beef and cattle

farmers continue to do what they do well. I will live here forever, if I am fit and able.

“I have kidney disease and was told I had 18 months to live and have managed to stay away from that since.

“I eat healthy and sleep as much as I need. Everyone has their stuff, and this is ours. I certainly didn’t want this, but it happened — I haven’t allowed it to chase away my dream. Like most farmers, I found a way to manage and carry on.

“New Zealand for me is the best country on earth and us farmers can celebrate being a big part of that and I charge my glass to anyone else that does it.”

EU Demonstrates Why Brexit Had to Happen

New Zealand is currently negotiating a trade agreement with the EU. It’s taking a while. That’s not surprising given the EU’s penchant for bureaucratic procedures.

First a preliminary political agreement had to be agreed and signed. Called the Partnership Agreement on Relations and Cooperation, negotiations commenced in 2012. It was signed four years later in 2016.

Then, the EU had to go through a lengthy process of establishing its

negotiating mandate for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) now being negotiated.

You might think after all that, they could come up with a sensible offer on trade in goods for New Zealand.

While both agriculture and international trade minister during the 1990s, I beat my head against the brick walls of the EU many times. Seared into my mind was their performance at Seattle in 1999, when the World Trade Organisation was trying to launch what became known as the DOHA Trade Round.

I was chairing one of the four main working groups. The EU representative

within the EU. Post Covid-19, that’s not going to change.

To add injury to the recent insult, the EU sought from New Zealand the protection of more than 2,000 so-called geographic indicators (GIs). Some of these, such as champagne and burgundy, are well accepted. But 2,000 others — really?

In many ways, GIs are a form of protectionism. Consequently, they risk an industry’s future as the focus on quality can be lost. In my four years as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, I never tasted a French burgundy to match an Atarangi or Felton Road Block 3 Pinot Noir. The UK is now also negotiating a free trade agreement with the EU. The EU’s lead negotiator, Michel Barnier, has accused the UK of failing to engage substantially. Yet, they’ve tabled a draft agreement. I’ve seen it. It seems pretty sensible, although in some areas such as rules of origin, it’s far more bureaucratic than we would expect, but then, it probably has to be for the EU. The biggest prize from Brexit for the UK is its ability to now negotiate trade agreements globally, without the deadweight of EU bureaucratic processes. It needs to ensure they are quality agreements and New Zealand’s being one of the first out of the starting blocks will help with that.

That’s of course what Britain joined in 1973. But, the Maastricht Treaty of 1992 changed all of that. It facilitated the goal of ever closer political union,

something Britain was never going to be fully comfortable with. It’s just a shame the focus didn’t stay on creating the greatest common market in the world, focussed on advancing global trade liberalisation that has proven such a potent pathway to raising people out of poverty. Sadly, as revealed by the recent trade offer to New Zealand, the EU is not that. And that’s why the world

Improved codes of animal welfare and a bigger focus on sentience are among the operational highlights of the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, which has published its annual report for 2019.

NAWAC is an independent committee formed to give advice on animal welfare to the Minister of Agriculture.

The committee recommended an amendment to the dairy cattle code of welfare in June 2019, which addresses dairy cattle welfare in off-pasture management systems. The amended code was issued on October 31, 2019.

Further minimum standards will be introduced. These will set more requirements for dairy cattle being held off-pasture for more than 150 days in a 365-day period. The committee also progressed a new code of welfare for breeder birds and anticipates that this code will be publically consulted in 2020.

“2019 was a busy year for the committee and its secretariat within MPI. The next few years will bring more changes to codes of welfare,” says NAWAC chairperson, Dr Gwyneth Verkerk.

“We also provided independent advice to the Minister of Agriculture on the development of the regulations on significant surgical procedures and livestock exports.”

“During the year the committee focussed on the development of a framework for considering the societal values related to using animals for exhibition, entertainment and encounter, and looks forward to this progressing.

“The committee is increasing its emphasis on animal sentience when providing advice. Sentience provides a lens to focus on the welfare implications of the balance of emotions and feelings experienced by an animal.

“Standards need to give direction away from things that induce negative feelings, such as periodic hunger from variable feeding regimes, and ways to increase positive experiences, for example, by providing more natural environments.”

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we usually make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good-quality CoQ10. Part one CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy.

If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue.

CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most important antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels.

Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication.

The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness. It can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation.

Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately,

this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also needed to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50 per cent.

Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100–200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices.

Adding a good CoQ10 alongside stains will in most cases protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the well-researched and patented US product CoQsol. If you are unsure feel free to phone or email your questions.

Evolution seems to accelerate more rapidly year by year, and when embarking on a building project in the 21st century, we can be forgiven for being overwhelmed by the choice of materials available.

Life was no doubt simpler back in the day when wood was the way, tanalised Pinus radiata for preference over native tree solutions in grandpa’s day.

Now technology means a rest for nature and new building materials for homes and buildings tend to be more eco-friendly and cost-effective, but wood still has a place — only it’s been tweaked a bit. Laminated timber is prefabricated wood, and it can also support high-rise buildings as well as humble homes.

There’s also a quantum leap forward in a glass substitute, a ceramic alloy that is almost twice as strong as the jewel known as sapphire and can’t corrode. It is used to make stronger windows for homes, apart from uses in aviation and undersea exploration.

The cost of electricity never goes down, and many new builds in New Zealand today are using solar panels.

However, huge solar arrays are not really needed when you can use new unseen solar cells that produce power in building materials for doors and windows.

Another innovation is 100 per cent recyclable aluminium foam, produced when air is infused with molten metal to produce a strong and lightweight cladding material. However, wood is still

It provides high insulation properties, and it is biodegradable. You can use the wood in solar panels, on windows as replacements for glass because the treated wood is 90 per cent transparent.

Moreover, alongside these modern innovations, there are building materials that have stood the test of time and are also environmentally desirable.

Wool bricks are a mix of wool and seaweed, and they do not need firing like traditional bricks. Earthen materials like adobe bricks and rammed earth

have been used for construction since the beginning of time. Rammed earth instead of concrete is a sort of manmade rock that’s formed by compressing earth, gravel, whatever is to hand.

Baled straw has great insulating properties, and its materials make a wall almost completely soundproof. Plain old stone covers a wide range of uses from flooring, walls and decorative use.

A man’s shed is his man cave, some say, but a shed can be a boon for any family. It’s in effect another useful room on the house, with a strong storage function as well as a workplace for the handyman. On rural properties, of course, the farm shed caters for a multitude of jobs.

If you plan to go down the DIY road, you’ll need to have the right tools.

With building supply outlets around the country, there’s no problem with selection. Many of these outlets have knowledgeable staff only too happy to advise on equipment and materials.

Once you are geared up to go, the most important factor to be decided is the foundations of the new enterprise.

Most sheds can be supported by concrete blocks or treated wooden pilings, but pouring a concrete pad foundation makes for a commitment to permanence. If, of course, the DIY approach doesn’t appeal, remember that a prefabricated choice will still need something to sit on before it arrives on-site.

Like everything else in the building code world, size will be important as it will dictate what permits may be required from the local council. In many cases in New Zealand, a shed becomes a home build project, while there are quite a number of kitset and ready-built options on the market.

Once the design is decided upon, permits applied for and in the case of an extensive rural facility, probably a building contractor lined up — a shed site needs selection, again in a rural context there will be several choices.

It would seem simple enough, but a lack of forethought can prove one’s undoing.

Be it town or country, consent to build is a regulatory requirement for any new structure and while it can be a bit of a chore, it is simply permission to build a structure with the assurance that it complies with the rules.

It is the formal approval issued by a Building Consent Authority (BCA) that certain works meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations and Building Code.

Some minor work is exempt under the act, but consent is required for most work including such additional things as swimming pools, spa pools and fencing, some retaining walls, decks, non-habitable buildings larger than 10 square metres as well as renovations to existing structures in certain cases.

Your one-stop shop is your local council.

If you are engaging a contractor, the red tape involved will usually be handled as part of your deal.

However, there may be unexpected rural consent provisions to consider too.

You or your builder can apply online, or you will need application forms that can be obtained from council’s websites, or council office and consents are valid for 12 months from the date of issue.

building consent was granted. In the case of rural builds, a house must be 25m from any boundary in the rural general zone and 10m from a boundary in the rural residential zone (10m from a road boundary) as well as more than 50m from any existing or consented dwelling on an adjoining property.

Your house must not breach the skyline when viewed from a public place within two kilometres. If part of a recent subdivision, it is possible your title may be subject to a consent notice that you

have to build on an identified ‘building platform’. However, it is still possible to apply for consent to build outside the designated platform.

Councils, in fact, have some control over colour and types of cladding listed in their district plans.

Cladding that will be frowned upon is usually something akin to unpainted corrugated iron.

You or your agent then will need to supply a site and floor plan and concept elevations of your proposed house.

Bridging the technology gap 100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Hydraulic excavators are the driving force behind most modern construction, with their action that mimics that movement of a human arm substituting pistons and hoses for muscles. The father of this technology was inspired by watching a water wheel while on a fishing trip in the 1840s.

Sir William Armstrong noted that the wheel wasted much of the power of the river he was standing in, and wondered if a system of pipes would help channel the flow. That led him to look at the works of earlier experimenters, like Da Vinci and the ancient Greeks and Romans, who had developed musical instruments powered by water pressure.

half a century earlier. Still, Armstrong became convinced that the future of hydraulics wasn’t in pushing down, but in lifting things up.

He developed a system for the port of Newcastle, where the city’s new piped water system had its massive back pressure tapped to power cranes to unload ships. These were so much more efficient than the steam cranes they replaced that Armstrong began to explore other ways to build on his hydraulic business. While he also used his knowledge of pressure in pipes to create more efficient army and navy guns, Armstrong developed the first hydraulic excavator in the 1880s, using it to excavate the docks at Hull. It was an ungainly steam-powered monster, but it chewed through dirt and rock, like nothing before. Ultimately the design was improved by the Kilgore company, who did away with Armstrong’s extra chains and gears, developing the ‘opposing piston’ hydraulic set up we see today.

hydraulic works reached their pinnacle in 1894, when the company he’d helped found deployed gigantic new hydraulic accumulators, steam-powered pumps and giant pistons to build London’s Tower Bridge, perhaps the city’s most famous landmark. Downsizing those accumulators, replacing water and other fluids with modern hydraulic fluids and switching diesel power for steam led to the miniaturisation and versatility of the excavator, which reached its modern form in the rebuild after the second world war.

It’s thought that the first mini excavator, of the kind used on construction sites worldwide, was the Japanese Yanmar YNB300. Space pressures and the need to work amid tight confines as Japan rebuilt its industrial base after the war led to the construction of a machine with a small footprint, a swing boom and the ability to be moved on the back of a small truck. Today, hydraulic excavators are everywhere, but it all began with one man standing waist-deep in a British river, wondering how to make a better water mill.

HAND MILKING FOR GENERATIONS

Alex Macmillan has milked family house cows for the past 75 years, and the 82-year-old beef farmer says he has no intention of stopping now.

A

lex is the man behind the creation of LOMACS gateway hinge spring, which he invented to ‘last a lifetime and save farmers plenty of money, frustration and broken gateways along the way’.

“I have milked hundreds of cows by hand during my lifetime. I was one of seven children, and my mum was equal to Alison Holst as a cook,” says Alex.

“We set the milk in a big fridge in a shallow bowl by leaving it for a couple of days to get the thick cream on top.

We had a wooden churn that would turn the cream into butter. One of the by-

products is buttermilk, which is strained off leaving pure butter. This was washed off with very cold water and mum would work salt into it like making bread with the dough in front of you.

“We had a little kauri pats with a corrugated side. Before it got too firm, she would take a tablespoon of butter and roll it between the two pats and make them long or round with a pattern for when we had visitors.

“I milked by machine for four years when my wife and I were raising our children, but it didn’t appeal to me.

It takes Alex approximately 12 minutes to collect around eight litres of milk from the cow he is milking at present

going to drive to get milk daily, and they all survived on full cream milk with no pasteurisation. It has none of the additives that you get nowadays with homogenised and when I wasn’t milking I would buy silver top from the shop. If you drink raw milk, your body takes what it needs and gets rid of the rest. I don’t like homogenised because your system can’t take out what it doesn’t want.

“If you have a good cow, hand milking is very therapeutic. I had one that was

very friendly and easy to pump the milk out of. You need to be experienced to milk the one I have at present as she is not particularly human friendly.

She is a Hinterwald, from around the Black Forest in Germany. The breed established itself on the rough ground and has a reputation of having a very fine-grained meat and is worth more per kilo due to that factor.

“I am extremely clean with my hands and equipment. Once I bring her into the

yard and wash her udder, I use my thumb and four fingers to milk her. People milk different ways. Her diet is grass and a little bit of meal to encourage her into the shed — bribery helps, just like with children.

“Fresh milk generally lasts a good fortnight, especially if you put it in a nice sterile white bottle with a narrow neck.

You can shake it up to mix the cream in — a wide neck won’t let the cream mix well. I use clear sauvignon blanc bottles.

“It is certainly a dying art form. About four years ago the Irish Royal Show announced that for the first time ever they would not have a live hand milking demonstration as they couldn’t find anyone to do it.

“I have milked different breeds of cattle, and to me, it all tastes the same.

A Jersey generally has yellowish cream.

Most people like white cream so they use Friesian, Shorthorn, Simmental or Ayrshire.

“In 2012, I won the Steak of Origin title for the best steak in New Zealand with a Hinterwald steer out of nearly 500

entries countrywide. There are not many of this breed in the country.

“We don’t sell our raw milk. You need your sheds up to standard and a permit.

I have my stainless steel bucket, a very fine mesh, and I keep the concrete floor area sterilised. Our strainer was made about 50 years ago.

“It takes 10–12 minutes to get around eight litres of milk. One cow I milked in the paddock I could get 20 litres from. She was outstanding.

“I leg rope all my milking cows as there is nothing more frustrating than when you are just about finished, and it lifts its legs and puts it straight into the bucket.

“Most of the cream comes from the last few drops of the milking. Some get clever and hold back. You beat it by putting the calf on her to stimulate her, and then get the last bit out.

“Our daughter Carla makes her own cheese, and we still make our own butter.

“There are a lot of things we could do if we had time.”

Mr Vujchich was also the first person to join the exclusive club.

“When I heard about the club I joined immediately. It is thanks to their speed that got me to Whangarei Hospital and into surgery that I survived. It was technically impossible for me to survive with what actually happened because losing a foot like that you should bleed out within five minutes,” he says.

“What has always stuck in my head was I could hear the rescue chopper coming in, and I could see it land. I have a new appreciation for the service and those on the team. When I see

July 22 marked three years since Mycoplasma bovis was first detected in New Zealand and the eradication programme has shown positive results and is on track.

“Finding this bacteria here was a shock to the industry, and kicked off one of New Zealand’s largest-ever biosecurity responses,” says Dairy NZ chief executive Tim Mackle.

“Our joint decision to attempt eradication was a difficult call. The extensive movement of cattle in New Zealand and the importance of this sector to our economy meant that eradication, while difficult, was the best option for our farmers and our economy.

“The past three years have presented enormous challenges, and it has been a difficult, uncertain and disruptive time for farmers and their families, especially those directly affected. The process has not always been smooth, and at times mistakes, have been made. We have had to continually change, adapt and improve, often being guided by direct feedback from affected farmers.

“We can report that the M bovis Programme is on track, and we are confident that we will achieve eradication so that we can farm free from this disease. As of July 22, there are just two farms, both finishing beef operations, with infected cattle still on-farm.

“Two other farms still under a Restricted Place Notice have been

depopulated and are completing cleaning and disinfection. There are currently 48 farms under Notices of Direction, 79 per cent down on one year ago. The Bulk Tank Milk Surveillance programme is finding very few infected farms and the National Beef Surveillance programme has found none to date.

“It is important to note that there is still work to be done, and we expect to find some more infected herds. There will be farms with Bulk Tank Milk screening detect results during spring, and there will be other farms, which might have been exposed to trace cattle.

“All of these farms will require testing to make sure we’ve found every infected herd. We are aiming to move fully to the long-term surveillance programme to prove the disease is gone within the next 12 months.

“We still need every farmer to rigorously maintain NAIT records. We have seen impressive improvements, and it remains an essential tool to finish the eradication process. It’s vital that farmers tag every animal, register it in NAIT immediately, and record every movement between NAIT locations.

The Dirty Dog Challenge

Waikato District Council and Hamilton City Council are pleased to announce that the 2020 Dirty Dog Challenge will be held on Saturday, September 12 from 10am at the Ngaruawahia Christian Youth Camp.

The event was originally planned for June 2020 but had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

“The Dirty Dog Challenge is a unique event where dogs and their owners make their way through a mud-filled obstacle course on the beautiful Waikato hillside,” says Waikato District Council Animal Control Education and Engagement Officer, Helen Williams.

“Events like Dirty Dog are a great chance for us to meet dog owners and give something back to our communities.

It is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the work that we do.

In the education and engagement space as well as the adoption programmes we run through Waikato Pound Pups and Hamilton Adopt a Dog. “If your fur-baby loves running, climbing, water or mud, and you don’t mind getting a bit grubby, then this is the event for you.”

It is the third year the event has been held. Last year, more than 300 dogs and their owners completed the challenge.

“Hamilton City Council Animal Education and Control is excited to once again be working with Waikato District Council Animal Control to bring this funfilled event to our dog owners,” says Hamilton City Council Animal Control Unit manager Sue Stanford.

“After all the restrictions brought upon us by Covid-19, it is our pleasure to be able to host an event where the focus is on being out and about and

go to helping animals in Hamilton and Waikato District’s communities. Tickets are $40 for one person each dog and are available through the councils’ websites. The event is open to dogs of all shapes and sizes, but they must be
