Dairy farmers in the thick of calving are being offered thousands of dollars for their best bull calves

by CRV Ambreed.

The company is offering farmers who breed the best bull calves $4,000 if they are selected for the CRV Progeny Test Program. That $4,000 could turn into $11,000 from graduation payments or more if royalty options are taken.

CRV Breeding Program manager Aaron Parker said with calving now underway, a lucrative source of extra income could be dropping in farm paddocks across the country right now.

“As well as being welcome income for dairy farmers, delivering their best bulls to CRV Ambreed will contribute to genetic diversity, and thus advancement across the national herd. Farmers know best when it comes to their herds.”

Elite bull calves are usually sourced through contract mating, stud breeders and CRV Ambreed’s embryo transfer programme, but it is through farmers nominating their bull calves on the open market where more unique bulls are discovered.

“We’re really looking for bulls whose daughters will be efficient and easy to manage for our farmers,” said Mr Parker.

CRV Ambreed is building its genetic portfolio to suit the broad range of environments, conditions and farming systems in operation now and in the future. Okura Stud farmers, Luke and

Lyna Beehre, offered CRV Ambreed a breeding superstar through the open market in 2005. Okura Lika Murmur S3J, who recently retired, came from their Northland stud and contributed to the national dairy herd with almost 500,000 semen doses. He sired 22,464 herd testing daughters in New Zealand and many legendary sons. His genetics were also popular in South Africa, North America and Australia.

“He’s bred outstanding sons and daughters with super production, udder and capacity traits,” he said.

“Hundreds of his cows have been contract mated in New Zealand and as a sire of sons he has produced some of the country’s best jersey bulls.”

The more bulls like Mumur in CRV Ambreed’s breeding programme, the greater genetic diversity feeds through to New Zealand’s national herd and the higher the genetic gain.

Bull calves from any sires will be considered by CRV Ambreed.

“Farmers we haven’t worked with before could potentially have the genetic diversity that we are looking for and could hold the industry’s next superstar. We are really keen to talk to these farmers right across the country.”

harles Baker died in 1941 and a trust was set up to develop and administer the property.

It is run by a New Zealand based committee. In 1981 redevelopment of the property began and each year young United Kingdom farmers are selected and sponsored by the trust to work and train on the property to gain valuable farming knowledge.

Dominique Bloxham from Staffordshire is one such farmer who has just completed three months of work experience.

“I am in a Young Farmers Club and was chosen to come to Limestone Downs through a competition. We go through quite a process to get picked

“I have always wanted to come to New Zealand and learn agriculture so

when I saw the competition advertised I was really excited and decided it was a good opportunity to follow my dream.

“Living life here has given me so much valuable knowledge. I have been working with 15,000 sheep, 700 beef and 800 dairy.”

here I never saw anyone bedding calves down on straw so I have learnt that we don’t need to use straw and this will save us a lot of money. The whole experience has been life changing for me, as a farmer and as a person and I will definitely be telling all of my farmer friends to apply to come over. It is one of the best things they can do in life.

The people here have looked after me incredibly well.”

Limestone Downs manager, Alf Harwood, has been at the farm for nearly 30 years.

“It is great here. The visiting applicants are screened and approved by the Trust Office in the UK to get chosen to come over.

“They do a lot of things differently there. They get massive production from their animals but at a lot more cost. It

is great for the young people to come and see how we handle stock and do things differently. A lot of them go back and build their own race for drenching.

That’s a huge thing for them.

The thought of handling a couple of thousand sheep is beyond them — they have never heard of such figures. They just can’t comprehend the figures we work with. One girl couldn’t believe we could drench 2,000 lambs by lunchtime.

“Coming to Limestone Downs is a bit of an eye-opener for most of them.

They come here and can’t see the boundaries of the farm. Farming in New Zealand is easy in comparison to the UK farming practices.

“We have had about 120 people visit now. It has been good to be able to share our knowledge with them and share the legacy Charles Baker left behind.”

DOMINIQUE SAYS HE IS TAKING A LOT OF VALUABLE FARMING KNOWLEDGE BACK TO THE UK

Dominique says experiencing different scales has been good. “My time was split 50/50 between the dairy and sheep and beef. Working with different managers and workers has been a good advantage. They have taught me lots of different techniques and I have enjoyed spending all day and the evenings with them. I have gained so much farming and life experience which we don’t get the opportunity for back home.

“Even the landscape is exciting.

Everything I have done here has been for the first time and I have loved living here, it is so remote. I have been pig hunting

and duck shooting and absolutely loved it. I had never been duck shooting and just being in the real environment, you feel like you are in the wilderness. Being in the sticks is brilliant.

“I had never worked with sheep before and working with them, learning the calendars and handling systems and how to look after them may help me in the future as dairy isn’t going well in the UK. Having sheep knowledge is a huge advantage if we decide to convert our farm to sheep for financial reasons.

“When I go home, I will be able to relay what I have learnt to others. Over

Lizzie Johnstone works at Storth Oaks Angus Stud near Otorohanga which is owned by Tim and Kelly Brittain. Storth Oaks was the name of the Brittain family homestead in Yorkshire where Tim’s grandfather grew up before emigrating to New Zealand in 1923.

L

izzie is 27 years old and a graduate of Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Agriculture and Commerce with a Diploma in Farm Management. She grew up on a sheep and Friesian bull beef farm at Whatawhata.

“Originally I was going to go farming but my parents thought I needed to think

long term and study so that I have a degree to fall back on later in life,” said Lizzie.

“I worked in Gisborne on my brotherin-law’s Angus stud when I could whilst studying which gave me an interest in the Angus cattle breed.”

straight into a graduate job as a resource co ordinator for Beef and Lamb New Zealand in Christchurch. I realised that working in this part of the agricultural industry wasn’t the right thing for me at that age. I wanted to farm whilst I was young and further my practical experience.”

Lizzie saw this job advertised on Trademe last year and decided to apply for the position. She started working here in mid-August.

“I think having already worked for my brother-in-law in the industry helped me.”

Storth Oaks is a 380 hectare Angus Stud which is currently stocked with 300 in-calf cows including the R2 in calf heifers and their yearling progeny.

The top performing bulls are selected in autumn and approximately 70 are sold on farm each year. 500 terminal ewes graze the steeper country.

“It is intensively farmed.Stock are not preferentially fed, therefore grazing management is important to ensure stock reach target condition for important times of the years such as artificial insemination,” said Lizzie.

Winter crops are sown to maximise grass cover for calving in spring.

Cows graze kale pre calving and are supplemented with a straw based mix in a Keenan feeder wagon. The weaner bulls are strip grazed on a fodder beet crop supplemented with bailage throughout the winter months. The weaner heifers are rotationally grazed on the hills until AI in October.

“We AI all of our cows and R1 heifers.

Kelly and Tim aim to select the best sires for their breeding programme and AI is the fastest way for genetic gain which has been proven in their Estimated Breeding Value data,” Lizzie says.

“Record keeping is vital for the accuracy of EBV’s.

Calves are weighed and DNA samples taken at birth.

Cows are condition scored and the bulls have numerous measurements such as structural and scrotal scores prior to sale.

“No day is the same. At the moment I spend my time shifting breaks, moving stock, drenching cattle and I am getting organised for calving.

“Summer is our quieter time. If we are not doing stock work we work on farm maintenance and weed control. Our busiest time over summer is AI which requires planning and patience as cows are coming into the yards regularly with calves at foot.

“We tag, collect DNA samples and weigh each calf. As we have rolling to steep country we calve behind a wire on our flatter paddocks.

This is more practical to catch calves for tagging and minimises mis-mothering.

“I love the job because we work as a team. I work with Mike the stock manager and Tim and Kelly. They are great and are open to new ideas I put forward at our meetings. No matter what the job is we all pitch in together.

“There is a lot of stock handling which is what I enjoy. I have observed working on studs where farmers tend to be quieter with their stock and pay more attention to detail. These are two things I believe are vital to a successful operation. Further learning and personal development is encouraged here and

Lizzie recommends other girls try farming as a career if they are interested Kelly has started a local women’s farming group to encourage women off farm to learn and challenge themselves.

“I highly recommend other girls consider farming if they have an interest.

If you are prepared to do any job with the right attitude it is highly likely you will progress in the industry.

“You may feel you have to work harder to prove yourself being a female but I enjoy that. I enjoy proving it can be done.

I love working with the animals. Everyday is different — I love the diversity and the curve balls that come along. It’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle.”

EXTENDING THE OLI VE BRANCH

Inspired by the romantic notion of living the good life, Kathleen Maunsell and John McNaught bought a property in North Waikato and set about planting what is now known as Whangape Olive Grove.

K

athleen and John purchased the 19 acres of land as their retirement plan for the future, in 2000 whilst both of them were working full time and living in Auckland.

“We had been looking for a property suitable for growing olives because we wanted to make olive oil. We also wanted to do it because the oil has so many good health benefits,” she says.

It was around this time the pair attended an Olive New Zealand Conference where they were told by an expert they would never be able to

successfully grow olives in the Waikato.

By this stage it was too late and so they decided to forge ahead with their plan.

Over the next two years the couple, with a few willing helpers, planted 600 trees commuting from Auckland on the weekends. Meanwhile Kathleen’s brother undertook shelter plantings and maintenance. Low and behold the trees grew and seven years later they were picking their first olives.

just couldn’t do everything and there was no point in stressing ourselves out. We knew that if we didn’t get everything done the trees would still be there so that took a bit of pressure off.”

Later on, when there were more olives to pick, they recruited friends and family to help them. They started by picking them onto tarpaulins by hand and then moved onto ladders when the trees got bigger.

“Now we have graduated to electric rakes with a bit of hand picking. We pick them onto nets because the rakes make them fly out in all directions so you have to have a bigger area to capture them.”

They still do all the work themselves with the help of their friends and family.

Dairy feed pads and shelters allow farmers to allocate feed more accurately to each cow resulting in faster growth of yearling animals in the winter. Often dairy production increases of 20 percent are a result of increased pasture growth and cow contentment and efficiency.

Pre-season preparation A single-minded focus on effectiveness, efficiency and innovation across all aspects of Fonterra’s winter maintenance programme is delivering savings for the co-operative as it gets match-fit for spring.

Director of NZ Manufacturing Mark Leslie said this ‘winter shut’ period is an important time of year for manufacturing teams as all assets across Fonterra’s network of sites are fine-tuned to ensure they are ready for the season ahead.

“Each year we process around 18 billion litres of milk, with the bulk of this carried out in the spring months. The work we are doing now will help us get match-fit for that peak period.”

Mr Leslie says the goal for manufacturing teams in this year’s winter shut has been finding more effective and efficient ways to maintain sites for the coming season.

“Together, Fonterra and industry are focussed on ensuring we can produce quality product for our customers and support farmers under a constrained milk price.

“We have always been efficient in our maintenance projects, so the challenge this year was to come up with new and innovative ways to do things better, faster and smarter.”

Hundreds of Fonterra manufacturing site staff are taking part in the annual winter work, with more than 500 projects currently underway around the country, ranging from major capital works to minor overhauls. Winter Shutdown Manager at Te Rapa, Blair

A furry problem We have all seen them, their eyes gleaming at us in the beam of a spotlight from a tree or the side of the road, but what do you do if you start seeing more and more possums around your property?

Possums were first introduced to New Zealand in the late 1800s with the intention of beginning an export fur trade.

About 200-300 Australian Brushtail Possums were released and the population quickly took off. Now the current estimated population is around 70 million.

These furry creatures quickly developed a taste for New Zealand native wildlife as well as being carriers of bovine tuberculosis which is a risk to meat and dairy exports. They can

spread it to other wild animals and controlling the population is the only way to limit the spread of the disease.

Current control methods include traps, shooting and poison.

There are a few ways to tell if you have a problem. Defoliation or dead trees, especially of the northern rata variety are one of the first significant signs.

Other signs include fruit trees being raided at night and possum dung around trees with fruits or flowers.

Possums are nocturnal and can be quite loud at night, so if you hear

them running across the roof, or find TB infected possums during the day, it might be time to put some processes in place to get on top of the problem.

Make sure all cattle and deer get tested for TB when requested and ensure all documentation and tagging has been completed before moving stock between properties. If shifting stock for grazing check the TB status of the farm they are going to and check if they need testing again before returning to your property.

neighbours if they too have control processes in place. If you decide to use poisons make sure they are used appropriately and make sure to note down which ones have been purchased, where they were distributed and when.

If you decide to go down the firearms path ensure all licencing and legal requirements are met. There are many traps on the market. Make sure you get some that are humane and do not pose a threat to any other animals or people who may come across them. Jaw traps if used should be fixed on a tree well off the ground.

Coromandel Coffee Company Ltd began supplying Coffee LaLa to a growing number of coffee lovers. The company entered the New Zealand Coffee Expo and were shocked to win two awards against a field of 35 established roasting houses. Fourteen years on and Coffee LaLa recently won three more awards against a field of more than 90 roasters.

They now have 18 awards in total.

“Producing good coffee is very much a blend of science and art. Our secret is a secret,” jokes Mark.

“I can say that it is partly our crazy roasters and our single origin roasting before we blend approach.”

Back in 2001, Mark Tugendhaft and Nedilka Radojkovich began home roasting coffee beans in a hot air popcorn maker, modified by the addition of a soup tin to enlarge the roasting chamber.

“This worked fine for tiny batches, which we trialled on brave friends and family,” said Mark.

“Later, with an engineering mate Al, we built a two kilo closed drum roaster.

Most of the parts came from scrap lying around the farm. The drum was an old gas pipe, the door a pot lid and the back wall a brake drum from a wrecked car, a Hillman Minx.

“The motor was from a fan and the loading spout a stainless bend from the old dairy factory in town. The drive belt was made from an old surfboard leg rope, the gas burner from a barbecue, and an accurate digital temperature probe displaying to the tenth of a degree was crucial when we decided to get serious about selling coffee.”

Superstar bull retires Six years’ worth of exceptional dairy progeny will remain the legacy of top CRV Ambreed Jersey bull Okura Lika Murmur as he retires this month and leaves his sons to pave the way in the dairy industry.

While saddened to say goodbye to Murmur, CRV Ambreed’s breeding programme manager Aaron Parker says he has made an outstanding contribution to the progression of the national dairy herd.

“That comes in the form of nearly half a million doses of semen produced, 22,464 daughters herd testing in New Zealand, and a long list of sons that are legends in their own right.”

He has also been credited with expanding CRV Ambreed’s exporting market with his genetics particularly popular in South Africa, North America and Australia.

“He has bred outstanding sons and daughters with super production, udder and capacity traits,” said Mr Parker.

“Hundreds of his cows have been contract mated in New Zealand and as a sire of sons he has produced some of the country’s best Jersey bulls.”

This season six Murmur sons were released to market as ‘daughter proven sires’ and are among New Zealand’s highest ranking bulls. These sons include standouts Roma Murmur Kingpin, Kaitaka Murmur Lazarus and

Ashvale OLM Highlite. “Kingpin is CRV Ambreed’s highest selling Jersey sire this season. He is an absolute superstar in production because he is Murmur’s son.”

Other sons and grandsons are coming through CRV Ambreed’s breeding programme, including up and coming star bull and Kingpin’s son, Puketawa King Connacht JG. “Connacht is an elite young sire that we selected to be part of our Jersey team this year based on his parental information and scientific data. With his daughters coming into milk this season, we expect to see big things from him,” Mr Parker says.

Murmur was purchased by CRV Ambreed in 2005 from breeders Luke and Lyna Beehre of the Okura Stud, North of Whangarei.

“The Okura Stud has contributed immensely to New Zealand’s dairy industry over the years by breeding some of the best bulls the industry has ever seen, including Okura Manhatten who was a game changer for the industry.

Refined ute gains six appeal The Volkswagen Amarok has been a worthy contender in the cut-throat world of Kiwi ute sales — a market with more turns of fortune than medieval television epic Game of Thrones.

Seen as the more refined and Euroinspired alternative to rugged favourites such as Ford’s Ranger and Toyota’s Hilux, the Amarok never suffered from a lack of power.

But that hasn’t stopped the lads at the VW design facility in Germany from dialling in a more muscular power plant to complement the ute’s mid-life facelift. And they haven’t gone in by half measures, either.

While new versions of existing vehicles often feature a small tweak and fettle under the hood to deliver a touch more torque or a bit more oomph off the line, the Teutonic engineers — who we must admit share a stable with the octane-drinking masterminds of Audi and Lamborghini — have slotted in a full litre of extra displacement, creating a 3 litre diesel V6 monster.

The original was no slouch, delivering over 420 Newton metres of torque from a two litre mill. This new incarnation throws the rulebook in a wood chipper, delivering a stump-pulling 550 Nm, and over 220 horsepower.

Taming all this might is left to a beefed-up braking system, sophisticated computer control, and, of course, a far more comfortable driver thanks to improvements in the cabin appointments

as well. A special edition — dubbed the Aventura — will come stacked with more automotive bling, including 20 inch mag wheels, bi-xenon headlights and special custom detailing.

But it’s the extra hardware under the hood which will really step the Amarok’s game up into the territory where it is a serious contender against the likes of the top-of-the-line Ranger Wildtrak — a prestige ute for the gentleman who likes performance and power tempered with visual head-turning appeal. John Frear, head of Commercial Vehicles for Volkswagen New Zealand had this to say about the brand’s new flagship ute.

“We are hugely excited by the addition of the V6 engine to the already powerful Amarok range. This will sit nicely alongside the existing 2.0L 420Nm powertrain which will remain a core part of the Amarok line-up.

“Now we’ve seen the early images of the facelift Amarok, including significant interior layout updates, I really believe this takes NZ’s most aspirational ute to the next level.

“We’re sure this offers something new for loyal Volkswagen customers as well as plenty to attract those new to the brand when the first vehicles hit showroom floors at the end of this year.”

two cents worth as well. The result could only be planet-smashingly fast, as blindingly blue. Welcome to the 2016 Ford Focus RS. While fans of extreme motorsport will definitely know about Ken Block, younger readers might have missed the days when the word Cosworth was breathed in the same sentence as the true name of God — and quite often featured on speeding tickets. The Sierra Cosworth and the subsequent Escort Cosworth were Ford’s foray into the frayed zone at the edge of automotive sanity, and they quickly became legends with both petrol heads — and the local constabulary. Racing wins piled up, as did the ink on a screed of rave reviews.

The new RS embodies that same spirit of precisely engineered lunacy — even while standing still. Input from Cosworth and Mr Block has given the Focus — which, one must remind oneself, was aggressively polymorphed from a sensible family hatch — no less than 345 horsepower and a snarling 324 foot-pounds of torque, all from a turbocharged four cylinder engine. Blue streak — with input from Ken Block and Cosworth, the new Focus RS was never going to be slow

through a clever four wheel drive system. Subaru and Mitsubishi may have eclipsed the Cosworth Fords of old with their rally-bred all wheel grip, but this modern Focus RS aims to beat them at their own game, shifting power to the back wheels and judiciously vectoring it forward in greater amounts when necessary.

The result is a sense of real speed and accuracy, without the threat of imminent loss of traction. The old Escort Cosworth of yesteryear was locked into a 34/66 per cent front to rear split in terms of all wheel traction, but the new

layout pays dividends in the corners, allowing drivers to unleash not just all the blue bullet’s power, but also its satisfying exhaust note. Their latest offerings in the learner-approved sport bike category may have arrived when there’s a chill in the air, but that just gives prospective riders a chance to appraise their options and make a tough choice between two very capable models which promise to make getting into motorcycling both easier and more attractive.

Not so long ago, the rules which governed learner bikes constrained novice riders to 250cc machines or smaller. Initially this may have been intended to curb the amount of power available to those getting to grips with the intricacies and nuances of riding, but an ‘arms race’ at this low end of the displacement curve led to some seriously mad firepower hitting the streets, with high-revving four cylinder 250s like the Suzuki GSX-R and Yamaha’s own Zeal

250 offering a quick way to go from zero to several demerit points, all with the sound of a demonically possessed sewing machine.

To put no fine point on it, these bikes were also engineered with more diminutive riders in mind, with that critical riding factor — a nice, low, manageable centre of gravity — neglected in service of the 250cc restriction. Larger riders — read as ‘proper sized’ Kiwi blokes — may actually have been safer on more substantial machines.

A fairly recent change to the rules has seen the scope opened up to embrace bigger and more balanced rides — and while the 250cc bracket still encompasses some fine examples, the choices for a learner rider are now better than ever. The new restriction is not so much on displacement as on raw power, which means that it’s possible to saddle up bikes which are both more adept at low-end torque delivery and sized for
