IT’S BEEN A LONG JOURNEY FROM BEING A TERTIARY EDUCATION MANAGER TO BECOMING THE WAIKATO REGIONAL WINNER OF THE BALLANCE FARM ENVIRONMENT AWARDS, BUT IT’S BEEN ONE THAT HAS GIVEN MIKE BARTON AND HIS WIFE SHARON A LOT OF PLEASURE.

J

ust over a decade ago both were working full time in the polytechnic sector — Mr Barton in management at the Manukau Institute of Technology and Sharon as senior languages lecturer.

In 2004, aged 52, Mr Barton had what he called ‘a late-in-life crisis’.

And so at an age when many farmers begin to think about selling up and retiring for a more comfortable life in town, the Bartons moved in the other direction buying a 142-hectare block at Tihoi on the western side of Lake Taupo.

“I’ve come from a farming background and I’ve sought of dabbled in it. I’ve run my own contracting business. Over the years I’ve bought some rough blocks of land and developed them.”

He says Taupo was a logical location.

“I’ve been coming to the Taupo region since I was five. I enjoy fishing, hunting and the mountains. I love the area.”

Mr Barton was also aware of problems caused by farm runoff into Lake Taupo and wanted to be part of the solution.

“I wanted to farm sustainably with a

minimal impact on the environment.

This property ticked all the boxes.”

Ever since, Mr Barton has been at the forefront of moves to clean up Lake Taupo. As soon as he arrived he joined Taupo Lake Care, an organisation representing 95 farmers and Maori owners of land that drained into the lake catchment. He soon became the organisation’s chair, helped write legislation that made its way through Parliament and represented the group in hearings before the Environment Court.

When the Environment Court set new caps for nitrogen levels in 2010 Mr Barton became a member of the new Lake Taupo Protection Trust, the body given the task of reducing the lake’s nitrogen counts.

However, despite the media attention, Mr Barton is confident the problem is

not as bad as many people think. “Lake Taupo is still one of the cleanest lakes in the world. What we are doing is not about fixing a problem. It’s about preventing a problem from occurring.” But it has been hard work. “It’s been an emotional rollercoaster. There have been times when I’ve wondered if we could remain viable under the nutrient restrictions.”

Science has played a big part in Mr Barton’s farming practices. Landcare Research has a permanent laboratory on his farm. In his spare time he’s done an MBA from Australia’s Southern Cross University on the implications for farming of capping nitrogen discharges.

“We’ve capped our discharges at 2004 levels. In that time costs have risen by 45% but the price for beef has gone up by 15%. We’re going backwards slowly.” To cope with rising

production costs and diminishing returns, in 2011 Mr Barton created a brand called Taupo Beef. “We have three other farms in the catchment supplying beef. They are required to farm in a way that rigorously sticks to the leaching requirements. All of them are audited by the regional council.”

Taupo Beef retails for about 30% above the price of any other meat on the market. Most of its customers are upmarket restaurants and hospitality

providers, such as Huka Lodge. Mr Barton says demand is increasing, even without a website and with little marketing.

“It shows the public is willing to pay a premium if you get the product right or the story right.”

Winning the Waikato final of the Ballance Farm Environment Awards came as a pleasant surprise, especially as the Bartons were reluctant entrants.

our arms twisted by a number of people. The regional finals were a fantastic experience.

“The judges visited a number of times and you got a full and thorough analysis of your farm.”

But that was far from the end of Mr Barton’s success. He was awarded a QSM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to farming and the environment. “I was absolutely chuffed.

It’s been a bit of a journey.”

Children’s author

draws on own experiences

Since the release of his first two children’s books ‘Me and Dad spray the thistles’, and ‘Me and Dad build the Chook House’, Waikato-based author Peter Hills has published five more.

T

he part-time drystock farmer and milk tanker driver picked up a pen and started writing children’s books a couple of years ago.

Although Peter had wanted to write for a long time, it wasn’t until he showed some of the stories to another children’s book author, that he was encouraged to carry it on.

The books are based around experiences with his children as they grew up on the family’s Waikato farm, friends’ children, and his own childhood memories. Peter said the stories are easy to come up with and he is also

given ideas all the time. “There are just dozens of stories to write about.

Don’t forget that everything kids do with their parents seems to them to be a big adventure.”

Peter could be described as a jack-ofall-trades with a variety of experiences.

The former police officer was stationed in Putaruru and Tokoroa for 26 years — worked on cattle stations and drove wheat harvesters in Australia, rode in rodeos and performed as a rodeo clown.

Pete was just 20 years old when he went to Australia and recalls locking himself in a ute, with the windows up in

100 degrees Celsius heat, so he could eat a sandwich without eating flies.

He worked as a stockman on Mount Surprise station in Queensland. All stock work with the station’s Brahman cattle was done on horseback. Peter learnt to ride quickly with help from the station manager, Warren Butler.

“So that is probably where the rodeo bug started,” said Peter.

The stockmen were given seven fresh horses every four weeks, and a newlybroken colt to slowly bring into work.

“Whenever fresh horses were brought in for work, the first rides had to be behind rails and there were always a few who had forgotten their manners,” said Peter.

Peter said cattle in different parts of the station were mad and it took some wild riding to head them off.

“There are no dogs — you are in bush country and at times it is laying up over your horse’s neck at flat gallop.”

Peter said as he was able to run, it became his job to lure the bulls through the yards. “When they charged, I would take off across the yard, through the gate, then turn back and climb the rails.

“Everyone would be yelling and laughing at the crazy Kiwi.”

This was the start of Pete’s venture as a rodeo clown.

When Peter returned to New Zealand, he joined the Ministry of Transport (MOT) as a traffic officer. He also continued riding in rodeos and performing as a rodeo clown. When the MOT and the New Zealand Police amalgamated, Peter worked as a general duties constable, a firearms instructor, and also trained recruits at the Royal New Zealand Police College.

Peter said he surprised a lot of people when he began writing children’s books.

“It was the last thing that they ever expected me to do. People are appreciating that these books are real life Kiwi stories about Kiwi kids just being kids.”

The ‘Me and Dad’ series includes a range of rural topics. Peter has just completed the first in a new series with ‘Me and Mum buy the Pony.’

Peter also has plans to include his milk tanker driving experience with ‘Me and Dad collect the Milk’. “It will be a good one as it will star some of my

friends — the farm dogs and cats that regularly turn up for their milk when they see the tanker arrive.”

All the books are illustrated by Gary Gibson in Wellington.

“There are not enough hours in the day for me to do what I am doing at present,” said Peter.

“I have seen the light at the end of the tunnel but I know it’s the guy with the torch bringing me more work.

“This is probably my own fault, as at present I have yet another plan up my sleeve to make sure I don’t get a day off,” he said.

Slip into a money rich stream With rules, regulations and compliance issues being raised in most rural magazines in recent years, I believe that it’s time to take a more positive view toward the direction these issues will take our agricultural and horticultural industries.

Although it appears that the main issues are nutrient leaching, soil erosion and affluent run-off, I see that these issues can be easily fixed. The true agenda is the rising affluent consumer markets worldwide. When you look and listen to these consumers their call is for safe, centralised, nutritiously dense food, produced in an on-going sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Our current agro-chemical production methods cannot and will not ever be able to satisfy this new consumer call. We are missing out on these revenue rich markets due to the domination of chemical production practises taught in our society. We are not the only country with this problem. However, the future is with those countries that can reject this quick fix chemical production system and hook into the rhythm of natural food production, reaping the benefits of healthy nutritiously dense food and the return that such food can generate.

Our world is changing and we need to be at the forefront of the change.

I believe that out of all the countries on our planet New Zealand is ideally

placed, with our good weather, our soils and most probably most importantly, our isolation. If we supplied safe, certified nutritiously dense food in a sustainable and eco-friendly way, we would never be able to meet the worldwide demand.

A huge bonus would be the added spinoff for our New Zealand tourism industry.

Can we do it? Yes we can and should!

We really need a new system, maybe a NZ Inc, involving all New Zealand Export Companies to drive us into those affluent markets, establishing a leading brand like a “Roll Royce Badge”. WITH A FARM ON THE SIDE

On the hills between Huntly and Taupiri overlooking the Waikato River there is a hotel that could be unique.

W

hat makes the Hillside Hotel different is that it is located on a working farm.

The hotel is run by Rosemary and Rod Leader and opened in 2003. That was 14 years after Rosemary’s parents Fraser and Meryl Graham and brother Craig Graham bought the 1,000-hectare Hillside Station.

Although travellers have struggled with the concept of a hotel out in the country, it is going from strength to strength. Rosemary says her father came up with the original concept. “He had walked up to the ridgeline and there was a block of bush he didn’t want to be butchered by farming.”

The hotel has views up the Waikato valley and on a clear day you can see

Mt Ruapehu. It was built in the style of a Frank Lloyd Wright prairie house. ”It’s organic architecture that blends in with the landscape,” says Rosemary.

Rosemary says their main clients are church groups, corporates, functions and weddings. “The tourist market is slow because we’re in an unconventional spot.”

But the creation of an online booking system is starting to show dividends.

And Hillside Hotel has just listed on Unique Stays — a website that promotes boutique accommodation providers throughout the country.

Rosemary says the hotel has proved itself. “It’s definitely been a rollercoaster ride. The hotel was probably ahead of its time.”

Back in the late 1980s Fraser and Meryl Graham were farmers looking for a new investment vehicle. They spotted four adjacent properties for sale near their home in Taupiri and decided to take the plunge. But the early signs were not promising.

“More than 90% of the land had reverted to gorse and scrub,” says Craig.

“There was more gorse on the property than on any farm in the Waikato.” Almost 75% of the property is steep hill country,

which also limits farming options. “The carrying capacity is lower than it would be on easier ground. The rough terrain also restricts the area we can cut for hay and silage.

In the 25 years since Craig and his family took over the property it has been transformed. But it has been a lot of hard work and success was by no means assured.

“In the old days it was a bottomless pit,” says Craig. “Now it’s funding its

own development.” Water courses have been fenced off, and a water system installed to service all the paddocks.

Currently, Hillside station carries 500 breeding cows. Most of them are Angus but a few of them are Texas longhorns.

There are also a few sheep including a small flock of Suffolks (about 50 to 60) and a mixture of Pole Dorsets and Romney composites. “We’re not too big on the sheep side of things.”

High world commodity prices, especially for dairy products, have helped with Hillside Station’s success.

However, Craig points out that that earnings would have been better if the New Zealand dollar had not been so high.”The costs of operating a farm have escalated enormously.”

Nevertheless, farming is still a good place to be. “Things are quite positive

but margins are really tight.” Craig says his father deserves a lot of the credit for Hillside Station’s success.

“He calls all the shots on the major things. He still does a 10-hour day. He doesn’t do the heavy work, but he works the stock and operates machinery.

But Fraser Graham’s biggest challenge is just ahead. Hillside Station is about to lose a big chunk of land for the new Waikato expressway and Mr Graham will be leading negotiations with the New Zealand Transport Agency. This creates some uncertainty for the farm.

“We’re hoping to do a land trade so the farming operation can continue as usual,” says Craig. “At the moment there are far more questions than answers.

But we’re endeavouring to have an outcome that ensures that the farm does not have to be significantly altered.”

It’s okay to ask for help

Dairy farmers need to know they can ask for help to deal with stress and depression, says Waikato sharemilker Lisa Lile.

Lisa made the call for her husband Hamish, who has recently shared his experience with mental health advocate, Sir John Kirwan as part of an awareness campaign.

“He was in a slump and he wasn’t getting better but when we asked for help, doors slammed in our faces.

Mental distress still tends to be a taboo subject among farmers.”

The couple decided to go public with their struggle in the hope that they may help others in similar situations and Lisa says work needs to be done on two fronts.

“Farming communities need a better understanding of mental wellbeing and there needs to be more help available from specialists who can relate well to farmers.”

The sharing of farmers’ stories is part of a Farmer Mental Wellness Strategy and Action Plan, which has been developed by a group of farming and health agencies. Dairy Women’s Network project manager for dairy farmer wellbeing, Lynda Clark, is chairing the group.

“Our joint aim is to make it easier for farmers to talk about and adopt behaviours that increase mental wellbeing and reduce anxiety, depression and suicide,” says Lynda.

“Each agency has their our own programmes and funding streams, so co-ordination between us ensures

In the past year, a series of 12 free Mental Health101 workshops have been delivered around the country to dairy farmers and rural professionals and Lynda says now that the strategy is in place, activities for farmers are gaining momentum. Health PitStops, which include a physical health check

and emotional wellness screening, are also being offered at dairying events across the country.

Hamish’s story is one of several that have recently been added to the depression.org website, which also features The Journal — a free, online self-help programme designed to support people with mild to moderate depression.

Helping Polymyalgia

Entries are now open for the Enterprising Rural Women Awards 2014, offering small rural business women the opportunity to boost their profiles and gain recognition for their achievements.

I was speaking with one of my Hawke’s Bay clients last week who had been really struggling with Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR).

“This is the sixth year we’ve run the awards and we’re already fielding enquiries from women keen to enter,” says Rural Women NZ national president, Wendy McGowan.

Last year’s supreme winner, Diane Coleman of Treeline Native Nursery in Rotorua, says business is booming after the publicity that followed her win. She acknowledges that entering the awards may be outside some people’s comfort zone, but urges rural business women to pluck up the courage as she did.

“Winning this award has been a once in a lifetime opportunity — it was challenging, exciting, scary, fun, humbling, and has really put my business on the map.”

There are four award categories this year: Love of the Land is for all land-based business from animals to agriculture; Help! I Need Somebody is for businesses providing any type of service from retailers to agricultural contractors; Making it in Rural is for businesses that involve manufacturing or creativity, and Stay, Play Rural is for businesses engaged in rural tourism or hospitality.

To enter the awards, women have to own and operate a small business with less than 10 full-time equivalent staff based in a rural area. The business must have been running for at least two years and, if in partnership, women must be an active partner of 50 per cent or more in the business.

This is an increasingly common inflammatory autoimmune disease causing muscle pain and fatigue.

The standard treatment for PMR is based around the powerful anti-inflammatory steroid medication prednisone.

Many make a full recovery, usually over 12–18 months but others do not. It is of course the second group that often come to me for help.

In my client’s case, each time he reduced medication doses below a certain level there would be a relapse of symptoms. For these people it is like a barrier that they cannot get through. I put him on my standard PMR nutrition programme of diet and supplements and after six months he has been able to completely come off prednisone and is now symptom free.

My PMR recovery plan involves adoption of a strongly antiinflammatory diet and an intensive supplement programme.

Our goal is to help shut down production of inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins and cytokines. Research (Alvez-Rodriguez et.al, 2010) shows that affected muscle tissue releases these chemicals and causes the inflammation of muscle fibres.

We reduced inflammatory foods such as saturated fats, omega 6 oils, sugars especially high fructose syrup in fizzy drinks and refined carbohydrates. We balance this with lots of anti-inflammatory foods such as oily fish, green and low starch vegetables, whole grains, avocado, olive oil, and some nuts and seeds, especially almonds, walnuts and flax seeds.

The supplement regime needs to be initially quite aggressive with a cocktail of minerals, antioxidants, vitamins (especially B complex and vitamin D) and energy nutrients such as co enzyme Q10 and acetyl-l carnitine.

We monitor progress closely and generally people start to feel benefits after three months. Give me a call if you need more information.

Over the years the words ‘Honda’ and ‘tough’ have become somewhat synonymous to Kiwi farmers.

The nation’s most popular rural quad bike brand only attained the pinnacle of popularity because of nononsense performance, and the challenge for Honda’s engineers is not to re-invent the wheel with each new model, but to carefully improve on a formula which is already reaping great rewards.

Enter, therefore, the new TRX420 — the latest incarnation of a quad that will be familiar to most farmers and their families. Sitting in the ‘sweet spot’ of the power range between light and nimble agility and big-bore grunt, the 420cc machine in Honda’s stable has always been seen as a smart choice, providing a winning mix of fuel economy, load capacity, terrain-busting power and ground clearance. The new model seeks to capitalise on these strengths while also adding a new strand to the mix — even greater toughness and durability.

It’s an intelligent move by the backroom brains trust at Honda. After all, what farmer doesn’t want the peace of mind afforded by beefier chassis construction, more durable components and ‘bulletproof’ suspension? A new double-cradle steel frame adds stiffness not just for taking the hard knocks, but for added handling performance too. A low centre of gravity was demanded by the developers of this latest TRX, and they got it — meaning a more stable ride, especially pleasing for novice riders and for traversing truly rugged terrain.

GOLDEN PAEROA World famous town is pure gold Founded in 1842, this picturesque and characterful little town sits at the crossroads between the fertile Hauraki Plains and the once gold-rich hills of the southern Coromandel.

Famed as the original source of our most iconic national soft drink, Paeroa has much more to offer than simply a long cool glass of refreshment, as evidenced by the thriving main street which boasts international cuisine and colonial antiques among a variety of other attractions.

During the days of the gold rush (1880s) Paeroa became a bustling frontier town, very much like those seen in America’s ‘wild west’.

Miners and prospectors travelled from here to the rich claims of Thames and the Karangahake Gorge, meaning that the town is steeped in history — and that some of the old colonial buildings have some wild stories to tell!

Today the mines have fallen silent, but the new ‘gold rush’ is a green one, as tourists come to trek the scenic Hauraki Rail Trail through the majestic scenery of the Karangahake, from Paeroa through to the little station at Waikino.

During February the normally peaceful Paeroa CBD lights up to the sound of roaring motorbike engines, as one of New Zealand’s favourite motorsport events speeds into action.

The Battle of the Streets pits riders from around the world against the ‘hacksaw’, a challenging street circuit which has been called the ‘Kiwi Monaco GP’ for its resemblance to the tricky street circuit in Europe. It’s not just sleek racing machines which come out and play, either — classic bikes and choppers, vintage machines and customs are on display, providing plenty of eye-candy between races!

Of course, a visit to Paeroa wouldn’t be complete without taking a picture next to the ‘big bottle’, one of New Zealand’s favourite landmarks.

Often imitated but never beaten, the super-sized soft drink commemorates the discovery by Arthur Wohlman in 1904 that Paeroa’s mineral water was of excellent purity and taste. It was Menzies and Co. who first thought to add a twist of lemon — and the rest is history. When the Coca-Cola company acquired the rights to produce L&P they pioneered the famous logo and the bottle we love today. The phrase ‘World Famous In New Zealand’ came

from L&P’s popular ad campaign of the 1990s, and has gone on to become a Kiwi catchphrase. L&P is sold as far away as London and Shanghai today.

Paeroa has much to be proud of, and it builds on its quirky and interesting history with a sense of positivity and community.

Farmers key in foot and mouth detection Prevention against one of New Zealand’s biggest biosecurity risks — foot and mouth disease — has been given a leg-up with specialist training in Nepal.

DairyNZ veterinarian Anna Irwin recently returned from Kathmandu, Nepal, where she was part of a fiveday training camp run by the European Commission for the Control of Foot and Mouth Disease.

She says the experience highlighted the pivotal role New Zealand dairy farmers play in detecting the disease early.

“I found seeing the disease invaluable,” says Anna. “But it also brought home the importance of being alert on farms. Anyone working with livestock on a daily basis is in the best position to be our number one surveillance force.

“Foot and mouth is one of our biggest biosecurity risks, so we need to be prepared. The quicker something is picked up, the better our response will be.” Along with farmers keeping an eye out for signs, their use of New Zealand’s biosecurity systems, such as NAIT (National Animal Identification and Tracing), will help prevent an outbreak.

“It’s very important that farmers keep their NAIT records up-to-date, as animal tracing and accurate records

are vital in any disease investigation.

In any outbreak, the ability to reliably trace animals saves so much time,” says Anna.

“Nepal doesn’t have anything like our system in place, which makes it much harder to manage and control the disease when animals move around so much.” If FMD were to reach New Zealand, it would damage the country’s trade reputation and halt virtually all exports of meat, animal by-products and dairy products until at least three months after the disease was considered eradicated.

Led by the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Nepal trip provided training in the clinical recognition, diagnosis, investigation and control of FMD. “Foot and mouth is widespread in Nepal and outbreaks occur frequently there,” says Anna.

“The training gave veterinarians, government officials and other rural professionals from foot and mouth-free

countries some of the skills required for a potential outbreak.”

To feed more than necessary would be wasteful and uneconomical and could lead to health problems in animals. A successful farmer will feed at the level needed for optimum health or production.

It requires skill, knowledge and practice to be able to feed animals optimally. The first step is to gain a good understanding of the different types of food that can be fed to livestock. Outlook makes great reading The Ministry for Primary Industries has recently released Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries 2014, (SOPI 2014), which is an annual report that provides a snapshot and forecast for our major primary sectors over the next four years.

Yet again, SOPI makes great reading for New Zealand’s primary industries and our economy. The report shows that primary sector exports will reach record levels of $37.7b in the year to June 2014 — this is around $1.3b more than previously forecast.

Export prices increased across most sectors for the year to June 2014. Both dairy and forestry sectors stood out with good increases in both price and production.

Meat and wool exports have broken $8b and are expected to increase by 22 per cent over the five years to 2018.

These results are all helped by Government programmes such as the Primary Growth Partnership, Sustainable Farming Fund, and the Irrigation Acceleration Fund which all deliver long-term value to the sector, and the New Zealand economy.

Farmers need to be acknowledged for producing a quality product that ends up

that over half of these workers will need a tertiary or Level 4 Qualification.

As international markets become more sophisticated and competitive, it is crucial New Zealand’s primary industries keep pace. It’s up to industry and Government to continue working together to attract, train and retain competent, qualified people to work in our primary industries.

There’s good capacity in our education system to meet this need.

This includes the new primary sector vocational pathway at senior secondary level, the new combined primary sector ITO. I also just launched the EPIC challenge which involves 15-year-olds designing a

marketing plan to attract their peers into the primary sector.

Dedicated primary sector institutions like Lincoln, Massey, Taratahi and Telford will all play a part alongside the industry in achieving this.

New Zealand has a proud tradition in the primary industries — it’s an innovative sector that requires our best and brightest across a range of skills.

We now have a good grab on what the future growth and makeup of this exciting sector is beginning to look like. The challenge now is to continue to attract more New Zealanders to work in the sector that so many passionate people have already come to enjoy.

Zeolites are inorganic, insoluble minerals consisting of a three dimensional framework of Silicon, Aluminum and Oxygen atoms. NZ forage diets are typically high in protein. Excess nitrogen in proteins consumed is converted to ammonia in the rumen. Excess ammonia is toxic and detoxification requires energy.

Ruminants do their best to recycle excess ammonium but inefficiently and at the expense of health and productivity.

Typical dairy cows will only utilise around 20% of the nitrogen they consume. 5-10% is recycled by the animal and excreted in the saliva to be re-ingested. The rest has to be expelled from the body. Typically over 50% of this is excreted in the soluble form of urea in the urine. Not only resulting in a significant drain on the animals energy, kidneys and liver but polluting the environment.

There’s still a few nuts to crack in getting a prototype developed.

The MAF Sustainable Farming Fund and HorticultureNZ supported initial research into that and now the FFC is looking to take the research further into the field.

Environment a winner in Waikato

“The efforts of many farmers and their industry organisations in Hauraki, and elsewhere in Waikato, to expand the amount of effective effluent storage in recent years is to be applauded,” says the author of a report to the Waikato Regional Council’s environmental performance committee.

Compliance and education manager, Rob Dragten, says having adequate storage to stop effluent being sprayed on to pasture at the wrong time is starting to become the new normal for Waikato dairy farmers.

“Ensuring they have adequate storage so that effluent isn’t irrigated to pasture when the ground is too wet to soak it up is crucial to protecting our waterways,” he said.

“Irrigating at the wrong time risks effluent running off into rivers and streams, filling them up with bacteria, sediment and nutrients that can cause algae.”

He added that the council’s collaborative work with farmers and agriculture organisations, such as Fonterra and DairyNZ, was now starting to pay dividends for the environment.

“We estimate that if the average Hauraki dairy farm doesn’t have enough storage to avoid irrigating over crucial winter months some 600,000 litres of effluent per property will run off to waterways that empty into the Firth of Thames.

“Given there are hundreds of dairy farms on the plains, that would translate into many millions of litres of effluent a year getting into waterways in that area

alone. And, in one round of farm visits recently in the wider region, we found more than a quarter of farms had no storage at all.

“So, having the right size storage for their property is becoming the new normal for many of the region’s dairy farmers, and good on them,” said Mr Dragten.

His report said compliance with regional effluent rules in the early 2000s was low, with many effluent management systems inadequate to

prevent contamination of waterways.

In the last 10 years there had been substantial progress and it was now rare to see ‘blatant, long-standing issues’ of the type that could cause particular problems with waterways and groundwater.

Lack of suitable effluent storage remained the biggest challenge but “the number of farms making this investment continues to grow and overall this change appears to be gaining momentum.” The process of change had been helped

The council has also been working one-on-one with farmers in areas with soils which present a greater risk of effluent getting into waterways or groundwater.

If required, the council advises farmers to seek commercial advice on the right type of storage upgrade and gives them a timeline to implement improvements so that they can comply with rules 365 days of the year.

“The farmer response to this approach continues to be very positive,” said Mr Dragten.

He said some farmers questioned the environmental benefits to be gained from spending significant amounts on effluent storage upgrades. “But our figures show there is a real risk of very large concentrations of effluent getting into waterways if storage capacity is inadequate. That’s not helpful to the environment generally nor to our clean, green image on world markets.

So storage upgrades are a genuinely worthwhile investment all round. “We’re prepared to give farmers time to get

Town versus Country It’s probably the national field ‘daze’ that prompted me to burst into print, but again we see the gap between town and country illustrated by the national media.

Firstly they love to get dressed up in gumboots and oil skins to mimic what they think farmers look like and they forget that farmers are in fact running multi-million dollar businesses and that Fred Dagg died when the guy who played him went to Aussie.

Secondly they, the media, talk about the huge sums of money that get spent at the fields daze that adds to the concept that farmers are all rolling in money and can spend several million on a purchase just because they want the latest gadget.

That feeds the fire that rages whenever dairy pay outs are mentioned with either a rise of millions of dollars or loss of millions of dollars.

Again this makes the wage earner in the city who is paid about $30,000 or less blind with jealousy because they think what a farmer is paid is what he or she has to spend on themselves.

What I find annoying is that the city businessman doesn’t get treated the same way.

The media don’t talk about their turnover, openly discuss their incomes or guess what margins they may have on their goods.

Nor do the media ever talk about the costs of production in the farming arena and the margins left for farmers to spend as personal incomes.

An hourly rate for a sheep and beef or cropping farmer would be well below

the minimum wage, and although most are farming for capital gain, the day to day personal costs are, in most cases, very low.

Envy is a horrid trait and when left to fester can take over logical thoughts.

What farming needs, in my view, is a solid campaign making others understand who and what it is all about.

It’s all very well saying that farming produces the majority of our overseas exchange. What that does mean to the townie?

Youngsters have no idea what happens on farms because they are never exposed to it. Apart from the Federated Farmers’ annual farm visit scheme there are very few chances

for them to walk on a farm. All going well, we can work with the media and get some stories out there that aren’t about polluting the waterways, killing off the underground water and raping the country’s resources. Well I can dream.
