Governor-General visits Training Organisation

The Governor-General, Sir Jerry Mateparae, and his wife, Lady Janine, met with Primary Industry Training Organisation supervisors and trainees in the equine and dairy industry during their recent four-day visit to the Waikato.

Primary ITO chief executive, Kevin Bryant, along with Primary ITO training advisers, Virginia Tocher (equine) and Eleri Williams (agriculture) were in attendance during the visit.

Mr Bryant said the Waikato region is central to New Zealand’s primary industry — in particular, dairy farming.

“It was brilliant to have the Governor-General and Lady Janine witness the hard work that primary industry employees are investing in their education — ensuring they have the skills they need to do the best job possible for their career, their workplace and the primary industry as a whole.”

During their visit to Windsor Park Stud in Cambridge, the Governor-General and Lady Janine met owner Rodney Schick and chatted with his employees, who are currently undertaking Primary ITO equine qualifications.

A visit to Stephen and Sheree Field’s dairy farm in Ohaupo followed.

Mr and Mrs Field have encouraged and supported many of their employees through Primary ITO training.

Waikato Primary ITO training adviser Eleri Williams works closely with trainees and employers, specifically in the agricultural sector, providing ongoing support and advice throughout their journey.

“It was an honour to host the Governor-General and Lady Janine in the Waikato,” said Ms Williams. “Having the opportunity to showcase what is happening in terms of developing the skills of our people at a grassroots level was such a positive experience.

All our Waikato trainees and employers thoroughly enjoyed the day, and we hope the Governor-General and Lady Janine did too.”

The Agriculture and Horticulture ITOs were merged late last year to form the Primary ITO. The organisation facilitates industry training in agriculture, horticulture, equine, water and sports turf sectors.

Bird protection project spreads

A project, set up to protect tui and other native bird nesting sites is spreading outside the Waikato.

Ship rats and possums have decimated bird populations in the region and the Halo brand refers to a ring of pest control carried out at tui breeding sites around Hamilton.

“The Halo project is a groundbreaking initiative that has produced dramatic positive results very quickly,” said Waikato Regional Council’s natural heritage programme manager, Kevin Collins.

“Due to its success, the techniques used have been recognised and there is interest in both the North and South Islands in using the Waikatodeveloped approach.”

“It’s a great example of what can be achieved when it comes to protecting native species from the fatal impact of imported pests.”

Mr Collins said planting native trees which supported species such as tui was a way the general public could be involved in helping to restore biodiversity.

Waikato has one of the highest rates of biodiversity loss compared with other

regions in New Zealand — for example, only 26 per cent of the region remains in native vegetation and this is fragmented into thousands of patches, mostly in the hill country.

The latest Hamilton biennial bird count report has been released by Landcare Research and highlights that the abundance of tui in Hamilton increased significantly between 2004 and 2012 in all areas and seasons, and recommends that the current effective control of possums and ship rats by Waikato Regional Council in forest areas surrounding Hamilton should continue.

Anyone wanting advice on controlling pest plants or animals, or planting for biodiversity purposes, can contact the council’s biosecurity team on 0800 800 401.

ritish-born founder, Quentin Wallace, initially came up with the business concept while he was working as a jackaroo in Western Victoria in the mid 1960s. He noticed a high demand for horses and on his return to the United Kingdom began to ship horses to Australia by sea through British-based shipping and forwarding agency, LEP. This came to an end in early 1972 when an outbreak of African Horse Sickness and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis halted shipping. However, as one door closed, another opened for Quentin when an opportunity to become involved with flying horses from Australia and New Zealand to the United States developed. Quentin was further able

to arrange flights to include the United Kingdom. Following a permanent move to Australia, Quentin established IRT. “It started as a dream and quickly became a reality,” said Quentin.

“It’s been an amazing journey and a privilege to serve the international horse community. At IRT we strive for perfection, and by constantly working closely with government bodies and industry stakeholders, we’ve been able to streamline the process of transporting horses across the world.”

The company has expanded to now encompass a global team of more than 30 staff working in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany.

IRT has a proven track record flying horses to compete on the world stage in various equine disciplines, stallions standing at stud in both the northern and southern hemispheres, horses performing in large-scale productions, and treasured pets. Other livestock breeds have also been flown around the globe by IRT. Although the pressure of transporting an entire team to a major sporting event is a daunting prospect, it’s a pressure the team thrives upon and it’s ultimately what defines us as an organisation according to IRT NZ directors, David Cole and Ross Johnson.

“We understand the magnitude of the task and our global team thrives on the challenge,” said David. “It’s not

an easy exercise transporting horses across the globe, but we pride ourselves on attention to detail and leaving no stone unturned when it comes to the safe and healthy delivery of the horses,” said Ross.

The Trans-Tasman route has continued to be the busiest with up to four flights carrying horses across the ditch each week. Other routes, averaging a total of 30 flights per week, include the United States, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and China.

“Due to the great work of MAF over the years, it is very easy to export horses out of New Zealand,” said Ross Johnson. “Our horses are highly sought after around the world.”

China has recently become an emerging market for New Zealand horses.

A major technological advancement within IRT has been the development of an exclusive computer software programme, specifically designed to link its global offices, quarantine facilities, and customers to their horses en route.

“It’s a computer system that tracks any horse flying at any time,” said Ross.

With years of experience and close workings with government agencies and key industry stakeholders, IRT has simplified the documentation procedures required for importing and exporting horses.

Prior to flights, horses are loaded from the ground into travelling stalls certified to airline standards. e have ‘number eight wire’ inventors and tinkerers to thank for many of our finest moments (like Sir Edmund Hillary’s antarctic-conquering tractors or Burt Munro and John Britten’s high-speed motorcycles), and a ‘number eight’ fix has seen many otherwise broken machines last a little longer, in a spirit of what would now be called eco-conscious recycling, but was more likely a stab at some frugal practicality.

But the recent Fieldays Number Eight Wire National Art Award provides another insight into this uniquely Kiwi medium.

Because this contest of creativity and skill is not so much to do with canvas and brushes — all the works submitted and displayed are fashioned from number eight wire, crafted by a cross section of entrants spanning the studio to the shed.

Not since Country Calendar first brought us the image of a farmer playing his high-tensile wire fence like a guitar has there been such an inspired showing of the artistic potential of the ‘old number eight’.

The Number Eight Wire National Art Award has been running since 1997, and was originally held on site at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek, Hamilton.

For the past seven years the eclectic, quirky, inspiring and just downright jawdropping entries for each year’s award have been on display at ArtsPost, the Waikato Museum’s downtown gallery space, situated in the old historic post office buildings. It’s a collusion of cultures which truly pays off — ArtsPost staff and visitors are consistently impressed by the quality of the work in what has become far more than a simple ‘novelty’ event, and the concept behind the award draws in people who may otherwise see the world of the fine arts as intimidating and remote.

As this year’s very successful gallery display draws to a close, entries for next year’s contest are primed to open, and they issue an open challenge to creative New Zealanders, urban and rural. It’s a great opportunity to show the country what you can do, to let your imagination run wild and to put your skills to the test, and it could net you a place in the upper echelons of the art world, along with a four thousand dollar prize, after all.

The calibre of work on display in this, the seventh year of collaboration between major sponsors Fieldays, the Waikato Museum and exhibitors ArtsPost, shows just how deep the currents of creativity run in New Zealand. Though limited to a very unorthodox medium, the artists who have made the cut for display (finalists are chosen from the large number of entries received — the full intake would not fit in the gallery!) have all followed different paths with their work, creating pieces which combine aesthetics with engineering and no small amount of technical skill.

“While there are fewer finalists this year, there is a high quality to the works and visitors to the exhibition will find many exciting art works that will stimulate thought and interaction,” says this year’s guest judge, acclaimed sculptor, artist and Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, John Edgar.

“The winning art work is a very sculptural piece which shows excellent understanding of the material. It speaks to me of the urban environment and it is beautifully made.”

That work is the stark, striking and meticulously crafted No. 8 Construction, a three dimensional piece made of 4mm wire by Auckland artist Louise Purvis.

There’s an old saying that’s become somewhat of a cliché — “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like.”

It’s impossible not to like what these artists have done with such a simple thing as a roll of wire or two — and it confirms that the ‘number eight wire’ mentality of doing great things with humble materials is still alive and kicking in modern New Zealand.

A Real Kiwi Story It was the 1950’s and Kiwi’s Bert and Dawn Hansen were building their house. Bert couldn’t find a reliable toilet valve, being an entrepreneur he invented one. This then lead Bert into developing a range of high performance Brass Foot and Check Valves. The design was patented and fast became the bench mark for industry standards and today the original design Bert created is used in a multitude of valves in hundreds of markets all around the world.

With the initial success of the Brass Foot and Check Valves, Bert and Dawn worked many long hours to keep up with supply. Their garage was the hub of their business with all the machining, assembling and packaging carried out there.

In those early days Dawn remembers having to pack up the car and take all the fittings down to the railway station for distribution.

In the 1960’s the range was expanded further with Bert designing and manufacturing a range of Brass Quick Couplings. However by the early 70’s Bert and Dawn realised that plastic was the way of the future and redeveloped the existing range of Brass Quick Couplings and Brass Foot and Check Valves in plastic. By the end of the 70’s Bert and Dawn saw an opportunity to add to their range and designed An Original Hansen and manufactured a Advertisment range of Nylon easy 1979 to use “Cold Fit Pipe Fittings”. Back then this completely changed the way Bert’s Kiwi Farmers joined Alkathene Original pipe, “We had a few teething Toilet Valve 1952 problems with the original cold fit range, mainly around the single barb being difficult to get past the hard pipe when it was cold and a 130kg farmer trying to tighten up a 25mm fitting with a 24” stillson on a -5 degree Southland winters day. Those were some fun learning times but we got those problems sorted, we should have labelled the fittings “Kiwi Proof”.

In the mid 1980’s some more enthusiasm and ideas were injected into the business when Carl Hansen (Bert and Dawn’s Son) arrived from completing his engineering trades.

in engineering and his desire to use the “right” technologies in manufacturing and materials added even more strength to the Hansen company. Bert and the team didn’t sit still for long and in the late 1980’s it was decided Hansen would design and manufacture a range of True Fit Threaded Fittings.

With the Hansen range of products growing rapidly, it was time to move out of the garage and into its own manufacturing plant to start injection moulding their products. This move was a huge investment and there were many sleepless nights in the Hansen households. The move proved to be the right decision and it wasn’t long before Hansen products were being demanded from all over the world. The 1990’s saw the products develop a stronger following in New Zealand and Australia, with many of the original products having upgrades to high performance materials and the core ranges growing every year.

“At one point it felt like we were adding fitting configurations every month” recalls Carl Hansen. In 1999 it was time for Hansen Products to move into even bigger premises. A building in Union East Street, Whangarei was found and the building underwent huge changes to house the manufacturing plant.

Fertility — to be or not to be

One of our farmers who had been on our fertiliser programme for many years, entertained a discussion group on his farm which was led by an agro-chemical consultant.

There was a list of questions that our farmer had to answer and when they got to the infertility percentage, the farmer answered ‘none’. The consultant replied that he couldn’t go on without a number, so after some discussion the farmer reluctantly replied, ‘one’. In that area, the infertility percentage was as high as 25% at the time and as most farmers are trapped on the chemical treadmill, that percentage is most probably still rising.

The word fertiliser derives from the word fertile, which in the New Imperial dictionary states, fruitful, rich, abundant: to make fertile.

Now it’s blatantly obvious that the current agrochemical system is well off the mark on fertility and virtually heading in the opposite direction with the farmers paying heavily for animal sickness and infertility! Quote: ‘Lawes added sulphuric acid to

rock phosphate containing the mineral apatite, a calcium fluoro-phosphate. The resulting soluble phosphorus was able to significantly improve yields on a variety of crops at the Rothamstead Centre, and the superphosphate industry was born. Unfortunately, over decades of subsequent usage — it became clear that the solubilisation of fluorine also occurred in the process and this had the same effect as the other halogen sterilants, (chlorine, bromine and iodine) and over time — soil sterilisation’. Fertility comes from food, via the stomach.

The more nutrient-dense the food the better it is recognised by the cells to build into energy, growth and production. What’s happening in the gut of the animal and the gut of the human is the same thing that is happening in the soil, which acts as

the gut or stomach of the plant. So, if you are bombarding your soils with acid fertilisers the soil gut will have a bad case of acid stomach and that will affect its performance, production and fertility. Also, compounding that is NPKs shortfall of all the other minerals that are essential for plant health and fertility. Figures out of the Waikato show empty cow rates in 1975 at 2.5–5.5%, in 2006 they were 5.5–7.5% and in 2011 17–25%. So, in the first 10 years from 1995 infertility doubled, then tripled in the next five years. That’s a 300% increase in fertility in five years — it’s ludicrous!

We wuz ova tha run off wen Sharlene went ta hostipil. Her Mum, wot gives me extry tucker wen Boss not lookin’, wuz stayin’ hear ona proppitty, ‘cos Boss wuz consernd Sharlene mite go laborin wen we wuz away frum tha homested.

Shore unuff, Mum had put Sharlene ina ute an’ hed ta town without us.

Ya see, wen he herd of tha ankil bita, Boss got ona fone ta tell ‘is mates. As yer no, tha lokil pub been closed fer renervashons, so nex’ thing ya no, ‘is mates are drivin’ ova tha kattil stop ata farm gate.

Their was the Plumba, Gazza, Chippa, Ray and Alby, even that ole naybor ofa Boss, Ruff Ralf. An’ ya gest it! Thay wuz loded up wiv a few crates an’ bottles. Nex’ thing ya now, Boss got tha jooce moosic TV ona widescrean, the barbecoo is bein’ stoked up, an’ it wuz

Well, Boss sed he wuz juss wettin’ tha ankil bitas hed. Seemed a bit ofa weerd thing ta me. Why wood a littil gerl wanta a wet hed, an’ enyway, how cood we do that ina woolshed wen kid’s ina hostipal?

It orl gotta bit much fer me, an wen Chippa started singin, an’ Boss started dancin’ roun’ with Ralf, an then tha Plumba star tid burnin’ sum sossajis ona barbecoo, I rekind now I new wot they mean by ‘orl on fer yung an’ old.’

Means win yer hava littil gerl, ya kin behave weerd. Anyway, wena Boss startid wobblin, an orl tha sossijis were gone — I helpt their — ana beer run out, Ralf borried tha Boss’s kaittil truck, an’ cos’ he wuz only drinkin’ sarsprilla, he wuz tha safe driva fer orl tha blokes.

Boss juss slept ina old armcheer he uses fer footy on tha TV. I cerled up ona wool fadge.

The Winter woes

Getting enough Co Enzyme Q10?

Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for energy and a deficiency will can make us abnormally tired with weak muscles. As an antioxidant it also prevents dangerous oxidation of cholesterol trapped in artery walls which is the first cause of the plaques that restrict coronary blood flow.

We produce CoQ10 less efficiently as we age.

The creeping tiredness that affects us later in life can be from insufficient CoQ10. Statin medications also reduce CoQ10 and is often responsible for many of the side effects including muscle weakness, pain and general malaise. Some problems especially autoimmune and neurological disease seem to lower CoQ10 levels possibly through increased demand from the disease processes.

Most healthy people under 50 do not need CoQ10 supplements as we efficiently make all the CoQ10 we need. However, increasing age and some diseases make a strong case for controlled supplementation. I include it as nutritional support for most circulatory problems and many neurological and autoimmune diseases including Parkinson’s, MS, CFS, FM and PMR that all cause low energy. I regard it as essential when taking cholesterol medications to protect against muscle problems, fatigue and memory loss.

For example I recently created a programme for someone with MS and she has noted a distinct improvement in her energy and general well being. I have had the same reports from people with Parkinson’s.

We cannot greatly impact these disease process but we can help with the often crushing fatigue improving real quality of life.

Every year during the winter, the same subject comes up with vets looking after small block holders — nutrition.

I know that small block holders are inclined to cop a fair amount of flak from others in the know, and that the number of small block holders who mess up is relatively small, but those who do cause problems certainly draw the fire.

Sadly it is a bit like dairy farming. If there’s one or two percent who mistreat their stock for whatever reason, the whole lot get the blame.

It is a little sad that human nature is such that the reverse isn’t the case.

However nutrition, or lack of it, is a song that is sung very regularly by a lot of people, and if there wasn’t a problem, the song wouldn’t be sung.

I suppose the major problem is that farming is perhaps the only profession that doesn’t require a selection process when it comes to small holdings.

All you need is either money or a means to raise enough to buy a block.

There’s been enough said about productive farm land going under small holding and being used to hold up a large dwelling and running one horse and a dozen sheep so I will let that subject go in a way that is similar to picking up a very hot frying pan with a very hot handle…

However the subject of learning what to do and when is a subject that can be stressed, and actually stressed is a good word because many people who purchase blocks get into that state on very regular occasions.

Just how do you fix a water pipe that takes water to the water trough?

How do you quieten down steers that are bellowing their lungs out all day and all night?

How do you know when to drench your stock and with what?

When should you fence off some of the pasture to make hay when you only have 10 acres?

When do you replace pasture and with what?

Where to you buy supplementary feed without raising another loan?

The bottom line is that you talk, ask and listen.

Vets are great sources of information and are very interested in prevention rather than cure, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking a neighbour what to do, or getting him or her to help. After all we are all born with no knowledge about anything so everyone else had to learn as well.

Strong showing for leading tractor brand by our motoring correspondent

Farm machinery company, AGCO, has launched six new Valtra tractors at the recent Mystery Creek Fieldays, expanding the brand’s popular A, N and T series lineup.

With new tractors ranging from 110hp to 215hp this represents one of the widest range of new Valtra tractor offerings at the Fieldays ever. And while there was a dizzying selection of new tractors available, the 171hp N163 proved to be the star of the stand due to its power-to-cylinder ratio.

Producing up to 171 hp (with power boost), from just four cylinders, the N163 promises the highest horsepower of a four-cylinder tractor in New Zealand. However nimbleness and comfort have not been compromised, with the company saying the tractor has been fitted out with new software, transmission and new engine technology to create a reliable and user-friendly machine that provides optimal performance in all conditions.

Some features include the inclusion of Headland GPS software which is sure to be of interest to contractors. A lot of work has gone into the brand’s lowerhorsepower tractors too with the 101hp

A93 being released for the first time in New Zealand.

A hydraulic controlled multidisc clutched two-speed PTO will be a standard feature on the A3 Series from now on, as will an unique autotraction feature and automated 4WD system.

The higher six-cylinder horsepower range has been expanded too, with an interior that has been overhauled for long use and improved torque and fuel saving capabilities.

This is certainly the case with the optional availability of System 150, a comprehensive autopilot based on satellite positioning technology, capable of steering the tractor with great precision to within a few centimetres.

Twelve finalists pitched their inventions to a panel of investors and business leaders at the launch of the Fieldays Innovation Den ‘Pitch for Investment’. The 12 inventors had received two weeks of intensive coaching and mentoring by Hamiltonbased entrepreneurship centre SODA prior to the event. SODA joined forces with Fieldays to create the new Innovation Den, giving early stage

inventors an opportunity to increase their knowledge to commercialise their inventions and learn directly from New Zealand investors.

Droidworx won the SODA Lift Most Viable Business award for an aerial robot carrying live-feed cameras that can monitor farms while the owner is at home. Rodney Sharp from the Kakapo Impactor won the Vodafone Best Use of Technology award for a safer postdriving system. And 12-year-old Patrick of Roskram of Matamata won the Best Pitch Award with his fencing tool Gudgeon Pro4in1. Patrick also received a personal invitation from Sir William Gallagher for an internship at Gallagher’s Research and Development department during his school holidays, along with a marketing pack from Vodafone.

Taranaki sharemilker Simon Washer took out the Rural Bachelor of the Year title as well as the People’s Choice award. New Zealand’s National Agricultural Fieldays, held at Mystery Creek Events Centre near Hamilton, is considered to be the largest agricultural expo in the southern hemisphere.

Clean Green Effluent Co. AgResearch preliminary tests are looking positive for the Clean Green Effluent Co. System.

Testing has indicated that the super low application system will cause no environmental ill effects even in the winter.

The success of the award winning Clean Green Effluent System has been its simplicity.

We start by filtering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is

used for external yard wash. This fresh green water is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total fresh water consumption to about 20lt/ cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. As we are now only using 20lt/cow we only have to deal with 20lt/cow per day for storage and distribution to land.

The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that

was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼ mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run-off.

This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity.

As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round the storage requirement is minimal. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises two 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage.

The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy effluent having to be

applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year of liquid to have to be dealt with via your distribution system. Rainwater contribution can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed.

The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem-free effluent system.

Text alerts aid farming

With many farmers carrying mobile phones in their back pocket while out on the farm, Beef + LambNZ’s new text alert system will help them to deal with weeds and pests affecting pastures and feed crops faster, easier and at less expense.

Text message alerts, along with suggestions for management, will be sent to all those who sign up for the free service.

Beef + LambNZ Central South Island extension manager Aaron Meikle said the text alert system is another way to connect with farmers.

“The alerts will be region specific,” he said.

“It’s about doing the right thing at the right time.”

Farmers can also text in questions which will be answered by AgResearch staff.

The new, free text alert system is an extension of PestWebNZ. This website, developed by Beef + LambNZ, Sustainable Farming Fund, Dairy NZ, AbacusBio Limited, AgResearch, and NZ Plant Protection Society (Inc), assists farmers and agricultural professionals with decision making concerning pest and weeds.

“PestWebNZ has been ticking along for

a couple of years now as a way to connect to farmers,” said Mr Meikle. “The texting and tweeting has been added by Beef + Lamb.

“We are taking a service and making it more active and delivering it to farmers in an easy way.”

The local alerts are designed to inform farmers when to monitor pests and weeds, how to prevent or treat the problem, and provide access to more detailed information and support.

Although the service is currently aimed towards sheep and beef farmers, Beef + LambNZ intend to develop it further to cover dairy, deer and arable farmers.

“We are taking it very slowly and quietly through the winter months,” said Mr Meikle.

“Before we step it up we need to make sure the technology works. We will give it a big push come spring.”

Short supply drives prices upward Both the Kiwi dollar’s value against the US dollar and crossbred wool prices are currently at similar levels to where they were at this time last year.

However the greasy wool supply side of the ledger is distinctly different to last year when there was a large quantity of wool unsold. This was due to grower resistance to the previously low prices, and wool weights for Autumn shorn clips were very good due to the growing season.

Another major factor affecting growerowned wool stocks last year was that income levels from sheep meat were extremely positive, a vast difference from this season to date, allowing some growers the luxury of holding wool until a better market vibe was evident. Prices for all types improved substantially throughout the month of May and into early June this year with, for many types, increases of around 5% from

one auction to the next common place.

Crossbred fleece prices achieved at the last auction prior to writing, were at levels of around 440 cents clean at the very coarse edge and up to around 480 or more dependent on micron for finer fleece types.

The smaller than previous quantities of genuine crossbred lambs wool offered (ie not long woolly hogget types) at the same sale returned prices of between approximately 430 cents clean at the coarser edge around 32 microns through to about 600 cents clean at the 27 micron end.

Crossbred oddments sold to extreme levels with many lines returning very close to body wool prices, on a clean price basis.

The range of prices across all types, in my opinion, highlights the necessity for growers to ensure that every main line of wool they sell is fully tested to ensure maximum value is achieved.

The fine wool market has also enjoyed improvement of late with Australian brokers reporting good price increases across a range of types during the early part of June.

Similar to the supply shortage in New Zealand, Australian wool auction sales have recently contained only limited quantities and, in fact, during the week of June 3–7 a mere 23,500 bales were offered at auction, the smallest offering

for approximately twelve months. Also similar to our situation, the Australian dollar has weakened in value against it’s US counterpart and, during the same week, dropped to below $US0.95 for the first time in more than 24 months.

Whilst the hype of a buoyant auction certainly gives growers hope, pricing of wool still has a wee way to go to inject solid belief back into sheep farming but, along with better prices anticipated for lamb meat next season, if wool prices can maintain their slow but sure improvements the industry may have a reprieve?

That’s my view.

Does your cow have the “Winter Blues”?

At this time of the year we trim quite a few cows that have been dry for five to six weeks. Most of those cows have haemorrhaging in their hooves. I was on a farm yesterday and the haemorrhage was quite severe. How can that be physical damage?

Those cows have been on soft ground for a long time and they are still showing significant haemorrhaging.

A cow’s hoof generally grows at a rate of 5 mm per month, which means that if the sole of the claw is about 7 mm thick the whole sole is almost completely replaced. Some farmers may think that if the corium (live tissue) is damaged before drying off, it may take a few weeks to heal up before it starts growing a healthy hoof because the physical forces have been minimised.

This may be true, but when you have a lame cow that has a major under run then it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks for the corium to heal and begin to grow healthy hoof to the extent that

it is strong enough to be walked on comfortably without any haemorrhage present. If the cow is not lame to start off with then the corium should grow good healthy hoof a lot faster, yet when you follow the haemorrhage down by making the sole a bit thinner, then the haemorrhage is still being formed 5 to 6 weeks into the dry period.

How can you explain that from a physical damage point of view? The evidence again points to the problem coming from the inside and the cause is more likely to be from diet and stress. A lot of the cows are on winter crops and for most that meant a major change of diet. The stress levels are also increased when cows are ankle

deep in mud. They can’t lie down and be comfortable so they spend a lot more time standing.

Don’t underestimate the effect this stress has on a cow. I know that there can be issues from a management point of view but it still needs to be addressed and minimised as much as possible.

That may well need to be addressed at sowing time. Cows need a place to lie down other than the paddock where the winter crop is planted. If there is bad weather coming (and what winter does not have bad weather?) the cows at least can lie down and rest. If there are no dry, sheltered places maybe there should be an area left in pasture. I can hear some of you thinking that I am not realistic. Maybe I’m not, but we do need to look after our cows. Even if it costs money, we still have a moral obligation towards our animals. However, if you

look after your cows, your cows will look after you. If you don’t look after the cows during the winter time, then you will pay for it later on in the year.

With Fonterra’s announced milk payout forecast of $7.00 per kilogramme of milk solids, there is still a risk I believe that due to a small number of non-compliant farmers, dairy farming may no longer be a permitted activity, but become a discretionary activity throughout the New Zealand dairy industry.

Some of these non-compliant farmers continually receive abatement notices due to untreated effluent being discharged to water and inadequate management e.g. broken or blocked pipes, sump overflows and lack of irrigator/pump maintenance. Last week at the Northland Effluent Improvement Project meeting attended by the Northland Regional Council, Fonterra, Dairy NZ, Farmers of New Zealand and other farming lobby groups, the message was very clear, the dairy industry aim is full compliance.

Fonterra and Dairy NZ will be introducing new codes of practice to meet the Food Safety & Health Act, effluent monitors, provide training courses, introduction of warrant of fitness programmes, nutrient budgets, soil profile reports, sustainable milk plans to ensure full compliance.

This will be nationwide. Fonterra’s definition of waterways is any drain or stream that permanently contains water 12 months of the year. This simply means keep all untreated effluent out of surface and groundwater, keep land applied effluent nutrients in the root zone to capture the nutrient and economic value, ensure all effluent systems are compliant 365 days of the year.

It is my view that if these minority of noncompliant dairy farmers consistently don’t make an effort to meet the industry goals,

they will run the risk of not having Fonterra’s Volvo and Scania tankers coming on to their farms to pick up their milk. They will not only become a casualty of their own making, but also cause their fellow dairy farmers to incur even more compliance costs and environmental rules.

In Northland there have been approximately 30 non-compliant farmers who annually, continue to fail to comply.

The Chairman of the Northland Regional Council last week said that he did not want the Regional Council to become the enforcement agency for Fonterra, that as long as the farmers met the Council’s requirements, it was up to Fonterra to enforce their own rules.

Chairman Craig Brown said that the Regional Council is making every effort to sort out the issue of non-compliance, but Northland faced different problems to many other parts of the country, due to high rainfall, soil types and topography. There needed to be a collaborative approach to this effluent issue between the Regional Council and Fonterra.

Farmers of New Zealand employment agreements warn farmers and employees that where the Dairy Farm Manager is responsible under the terms of the employment agreement to ensure that the effluent system is maintained and operated correctly.

The Environment Court has stated in a recent Court case, that dairy farm managers could be held legally responsible and be liable to prosecution for unlawful effluent spillages and any other legal action resulting from any breaches of the farm resource consent conditions, pertaining to the effluent system, resulting in substantial fines.

A nightmare scenario

Foot and Mouth disease appearing on the New Zealand farming landscape would be devastating.

But it is a scenario that has just been explored in a Ministry of Primary Industries workshop.

Rather dramatically dubbed ‘Exercise Capricorn’ the event nevertheless considered forward planning is of the essence, as it pictured the spectre of FMD appearing here on both a beef and a dairy farm.

Strengthening our ability to manage an outbreak will require close collaboration with the primary industries, farmers and rural communities, the ministry says, after the exercise examined how the first 12 hours would unfold.

The deputy director general, compliance and response, Andrew Colteman said the Exercise Capricorn workshop was held to familiarise industry with MPI’s initial response procedures, to explore the use of the NAIT scheme and FarmsOnLine applications, and to identify opportunities to enhance communication.

“The connecting threads throughout the day were partnership and communication,” he said. “At the end of the day, one key theme emerged and that was the absolute imperative to work closely together from the outset of any significant animal disease outbreak.”

Common causes are overfeeding, so this condition more commonly affects stall-fed cattle. In addition, a sudden

change to feed to which the animals are unaccustomed, and excessive feeding of indigestible foodstuffs, such as damaged silage, are all liable to result in impaction.

What to do 1. Symptoms develop gradually. Cows go off their milk, and appear dull. Distension of the left flank is a feature.

2. Withhold all food, and administer a drench of 1¼ lbs. Epsom Salts in a quart of water.

3. Massaging the left flank will also help to relieve the condition.

General manager from Beef and Lamb New Zealand, Ben O’Brien, says it was a good opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the systems in place to manage a disease outbreak.

“It would be fair to say that we left feeling a little more optimistic around the planning that the ministry has in place for such an event. There is a lot more work to do on joint planning.”

Working in glass

Following an accident and a lengthy wait for surgery, Jan Shoemark began to create glass artwork. Six months later she returned from the Ellerslie Flower Show with a bronze medal.

That was eight years ago and Jan has since gone onto win several other garden art awards around the North Island. Jan lived in Auckland before her accident but moved to rural Waikato shortly afterwards.

She now creates a variety of indoor and outdoor glass artwork, from picture art of landscapes, traditional rose mirrors to quirky signs, and finds a challenge in seeing an entire picture come alive in glass.

Although Jan has never received any formal training in the art industry, her give-it-a-go attitude has led her to employment where she has been able to put her creative talents to good use.

Jan loves a challenge and describes herself as a ‘number eight-wire girl’ learning through experience and often the hard way. Her art is continuing to evolve with the introduction of balls, pedestals, pots and moulded fourdimensional plinths. Jan has found living in the countryside to be a great inspiration for her artwork. She bikes most days or travels to Te Aroha to go bushwalking.

“All my designs are inspired by what I see around me, whether created in a

“Someone came along and saw it and asked if they could buy it,” said Jan. “I repeated the process and it all took off.”

Jan hopes to travel more in the future and create artworks incorporating some of New Zealand’s iconic landscapes. She also enjoys sharing the story of her journey into artwork as guest speaker for Christian and garden groups.

“If someone had told me I would become an artist in my 40’s I would have laughed,” said Jan. “Being an artist has changed and strengthened who I am.”

The majority of the New Zealand plantation forest industry is based on radiata pine and is likely to remain the main plantation in New Zealand.

However there is an increasing interest in the use of exotic species capable of producing higher valued timber such as Douglas fir, various cypress and eucalyptus species and the Californian redwood. Some New Zealand indigenous species are being established as well.
