In the Thames-Coromandel and Hauraki districts there is a total fire ban and Waikato District Council has imposed a restricted fire season, with details of permitted fires available at their offices.

Hamilton city and Waikato and Waipa districts are all at water alert level 1.

This means sprinklers can be used between 6am and 8am and 6pm and 8pm, and hand-held hoses are allowed at any time.

Smart water programme co-ordinator Charmaine Petereit said with people returning from holiday, higher than average temperatures and little rain forecast, a move to alert level 2 became more likely.

Measures to save water, apart from restrictions, can include checks on leaky pipes as the average household can leak more than 10,000 gallons of water per year.

Animal antibiotic use drops

There has been a drop in the use of antibiotics in farmed animals according to a report from the Ministry of Primary Industry.

the increased use of: injectable tylosin in cattle; third and fourth generation cephalosporins in production and companion animals; and the reported marketing and choice of antibiotics which appear to be based on convenience rather than what may be the most appropriate therapeutic choice.

“As a result of this information, MPI will gather further information and look at controls around the marketing and use of antibiotic products to determine they effectively manage risks associated with antibiotic resistance,” said Ms Barnao.

The figures were produced in a study to enable monitoring of the potential for antibiotic resistance in food-producing animals and companion animals.

MPI deputy director-general for standards, Carol Barnao, says the report on antibiotic sales noted that overall the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and horticulture appears to have decreased by 19%.

“We understand that this reduction is largely attributable to positive changes in production animal management in the pig, poultry and dairy industries.

These industries have reported a move towards non-antibiotic preventative treatments like vaccination and changes to on-farm practices to decrease their antibiotic use,” she says.

The analysis also revealed areas that will need further review. These include

VERSATILE APPROACH KEEPS CHOPPERS FLYING

Since the late 1940s helicopters have been used for a huge range of roles, both in military and civilian fields of endeavour.

H

machines which make a huge difference — it’s the people who fly and maintain them. And it’s their multi-tined approach to the economic realities of the 21st century aero industry which helps them thrive, supplying several ‘outside of the box’ services in our rural heartland.

Take for example Heli Hunt ‘n’ Fish Taupo, the busy, multi-faceted aero operation of seasoned pilot and hunter Phil Janssen. Phil stresses that having many strings to his bow (hunting pun intended) is the key to the success of his business, and that without diversity it would be a herculean task to keep his fleet in the air.

“You’ve got to be able to do anything these days, or you’re not in the game,” he says. “Owning a fleet (of helicopters) is one thing, but fuel and maintenance is another — because of the costs you have to be always looking out to see what’s coming.”

What’s coming — and growing across the country — is the trend toward adventure tourism from the skies. While Phil’s choppers still regularly fly out fitted with agri-spray equipment, this is by no means the core of his business model.

Help with muscle cramp

It takes a lot to keep a machine like this flying — not just tools and talent, but innovative business sense as well

the helicopter has the ability to take them to isolated streams and lakeshores where rainbow trout lurk, waiting for the cast of a well-tied fly.

“We get guys from all walks of life,” says Phil.

“From both town and country, and from overseas too. Most bring their own hunting or fishing guides, but for many of them the big reason to be out in the wilderness is to take a break from their hectic lives. If they shoot a deer, that’s a bonus.”

Certainly, the scenery is something to drink in, especially from the aerial perspective of a helicopter in flight. Phil operates a three-machine fleet, incorporating a Bell Jetranger, a Robinson R44 and a Robinson R22 — thoroughly modern helicopters which need to be kept in diverse work to earn their keep. Phil has been in the industry for over two decades, and he recounts that his introduction to heli-hunting came during the venison boom of the 1980s.

“It started with the hunting side of things — shooting deer. Then, like many guys, I got into flying hunters into the bush — it was seen as a good way of paying off a helicopter.” When times got tougher, Phil refused to give in, and it was an expansion into other pursuits which saw him get through.

A varied background has seen Phil fly some interesting ‘sorties’, far out of the norm for either a topdresser or a hunting pilot. Recently he’s been to the Papua New Guinea, helping unlock the island nation’s mineral resources by undertaking airborne seismic surveys.

“We were flying in heat of up to 50 degrees Celsius — we tried to gain altitude as fast as possible to get above the heat, up where the air is cooler!”

Another scientific task has come from closer to home, with Phil’s company chosen to assist with the live capture of deer. His skills as a hunting pilot have come to the fore in this endeavour, tagging and releasing animals for a comprehensive New Zealand study of the species.

Between the monsoon bucket for firefighting, the sprayers for agricultural work, and the constant stream of hunters, hikers, mountain bikers and anglers who need a literal ‘lift’ into the heartland, diversity is the key to Heli Hunt ‘n’ Fish operations.

I had someone call me about severe body wide cramps.

In New Zealand we owe a lot to our rivers. As they flow from the mountains to the sea they help create landscapes and provide habitat for fish and other aquatic life.

T

hey provide us with water for drinking, for irrigation and a multitude of other purposes. And rivers also provide routes for transport and commerce that were instrumental in the settlement and development of this country.

Yet for all their importance, our record in looking after our rivers is poor. We’ve used them as dumping places for our sewage and pollution. We’ve dammed them in order to generate electricity and we’ve taken water and reduced their flows with the aim of increasing agricultural production.

Just recently the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Dr Jan Wight released a report sharply critical of water quality in our lakes and rivers. The legacy of the policies and practices that have been in place for several generations will be difficult to reverse.

Although regional councils and dairy co-operative Fonterra have implemented tighter rules on discharges to water achieving some pleasing results, some of the best progress in improving the quality of our waterways is due to landowners taking up the challenge.

One of them, Otorohanga farmer Graham Davison has a dairy farm that shares a two kilometre boundary with the Waipa River.

His work to improve the river environment has been recognised by the Waikato River Authority, which earlier this year presented him with a catchment improvement award.

Mr Davison began farming his property more than 40 years ago. He started with 170 cows. And now has 290. “We had milking machines.

It took time for the results of his investment to show. But Mr Davison says it has all been worth it. The floodprone river floods a whole lot less than it used to and the extent of flooding has also reduced.

Mr Davison also installed single electric fences to keep stock away from river. “The cows were helping to erode the banks.”

The tree cover in an area that was formerly open country has encouraged the return of birds, while the willows provide shade for the river and the species that live in it.

Mr Davison admits he was surprised to receive the award. “I was very, very honoured. I was very happy to receive it.” Two sets of judges came to his farm and had a look, including driving to the river. “I was very nervous.”

Now into his 60s, Mr Davison says he has no plans to retire. “Farming’s a great lifestyle. It’s something the family can be part of. It’s hard work but it’s a good life.”

Fast forward four decades and the situation is totally different. Larger herd sizes are putting more pressure on the environment. At the same time, Fonterra

has toughened its rules and will refuse to take milk from suppliers who are unable to meet its environmental standards.

But Mr Davison is not worried because he is no recent convert to environmentalism. Twenty years ago he and his wife Rosemary decided to do something about the river. “The Waipa River meandered all over the place. It

was eating away the banks. So I got 13 or 14 truckloads of limestone rocks and put them by the river and then we planted willows.”

Mr Davison says there was no funding available at the time, so he paid for all the work himself. He doesn’t know how much it cost, although thousands came from his pocket.

Whakatane supervisor of two dairy farms of 500ha, also running horses emus goats poultry and drystock, has learned 40 things about fertiliser, soil and organic principles and he runs his land on these. He says he thinks this is the only answer for a sustainable future.

OVER time, correct fertiliser policies substantially drought-proof the soil, build organic matter and improve health.

29SOIL with one percent of organic matter (OM) will contain about 5900kg carbon.

Carbon holds four times its weight in water, so 1% OM soil can only hold 5900 x 4 = 59,000kg/ ha, or 5900 litres, or the equivalent of 6mm rain before the water runs off. But go up to 5% OM and the soil can hold 30mm of rain. If soil does not have good levels of organic matter, it will not store enough water to feed rivers over summer, which is why summer river flows are decreasing.

Fungal and bacterial diseases are a symptom of poor fertiliser programmes.

Fruit and vegetables that rot and do not store have been grown with incorrect fertiliser programmes.

If you are dipping, dagging and drenching, your fertiliser programme is not working. If you have to constantly re-grass areas of your farm, your fertiliser is failing you.

No quiet retirement for these icons

The news from the Australian motor industry these days is ‘all change’, with massive restructuring looming for the big brands and new badges seen on the hallowed tarmac of Bathurst.

If, by 2020, the automotive landscape across the ditch has changed to the extent that some rumours would have us believe, the motoring scene will be very different here as well — New Zealand’s favourite big cars are as Aussie-inspired as the rotary clothesline.

Perhaps the saddest thing which could come from a top-to-bottom overhaul of Antipodean automotive

manufacturing would be the loss of the V8 ute. Sure, the lines of the American El Camino may have been the inspiration for workmanlike road monsters such as the Maloo and the FPV Typhoon, but Ford Australia have been offering a ‘utility coupe’ since the 1930s, and one with a Falcon badge since 1961.

It’s a tough battle in the UTV sector of the rural vehicle market, with top offerings from the likes of Can Am, Polaris, Kawasaki and many more slugging it out with new contenders like the Tuatara and specialist vehicles like the all-terrain Argo for on-farm supremacy.

That’s why Yamaha’s latest entry into the side-by-side fray has a suitably warlike name — meet the 2014 Viking, the first ‘true three-seater UTV’.

The Viking name has connotations beyond the obligatory horned helmets and big axes. Just like the Norsemen for whom it’s named, the new Yamaha prides itself on go-anywhere toughness and grit, and like the longships which ferried the medieval sea-reavers as far afield as Iceland and North America, this rugged workhorse packs in a lot of gear.

Here are the figures.

The Viking is equipped with Yamaha’s most powerful 686cc engine with a broad, usable powerband. Four-valve head with 10.0:1 compression delivers optimum torque for virtually any workload, and up to a 30% gain in fuel efficiency. Add to this close to 40 litres of fuel in the tank, and a hard day’s work will need far less in the way of pit stops!

When it comes to carrying capacity, the Viking really shines. With the

addition of a middle seat the new Yamaha transcends the side-by-side template, and the extra seat is offset (MacLaren F1 style) to cut back on legroom squabbles. By mounting the engine low beneath the cargo deck, the Viking’s engineers have maximised space in the articulated tipping tray, with the guts to haul close to 300 kilos on board, with a further 700 kilos towing capacity. That near as makes no odds to a ton of tools and gear.

Yamaha have also gone all-out to make sure their Norse-named UTV can conquer as much territory as the original Vikings themselves. There’s nearly a foot of travel in the clever suspension setup, and the key UTV factor of smart chassis design has been prioritised for sharper handling and minimal body roll, especially on uneven ground.

Yamaha have come out swinging in the battle to gain market share for their UTVs, and to this end they have benchmarked the Viking against big names such as the popular Polaris Ranger and US favourite the John Deere Gator, with ample internet video footage on their promotional website claiming advantages over these industry heavyweights in a slew of categories.

The proof, however, will be in the driving — and indeed the hard yards put in on Kiwi farms. Wool exporters draw breath after feverish battle The quiet after the storm began to evidence itself at auctions held in both Napier and Christchurch towards the end of November and into December as exporters drew breath after a feverish period of battle, throughout the October and early November weeks, desperately trying to fill forward orders from the limited volumes of wool available during that time.

Whilst prices for, in particular, crossbred wool types eased considerably during late November and the first two weeks of December from their highs of the previous few weeks, the market tone in general remained positive allowing for good clearances of auction catalogues.

Exporters had always made it clear that the majority of the incredible price spike was attributable to the ‘demand outweighing supply situation’ during our spring months plus the integrity of exporters to honour forward sales with their customers.

By the end of the second week in December prices for almost all crossbred adult body wools were covered within the 520 to 550 cents per clean kilogram range, except for a few

shorter second-shear types which were fetching prices some 20 to 30 cents behind fleece prices, however much was dependent on evenness of length, vm content and micron.

Oddment price was dictated mainly by washing colour ability, particularly for the shorter types, whilst a few bulky oddment lines received prices just below fleece levels. A large number of lines of crossbred fleece showed a distinct break in the staple and included a few soft cotts. As quality fell an expectation that prices would be quite subdued seemed appropriate, however in comparison to the better quality wools many of the poorer styles sold well.

Solid demand continued for good style, good character, well-bred Corriedale and halfbred wools, and although the offerings of these types were relatively small, buyers showed wide-spread interest.

Merino prices were mixed, as the season proper drew to a close for those wools, but a handful of very good adult wools drew a positive response from the export trade. The earlier trend of very limited demand for super-fine and ultra-

fine merino types continued. It would appear that to create an over supply of ‘average’ extra-fine merino wool types has been too easy, and now as many growers both in New Zealand and Australia have swung towards producing such wool types, the market appears unable to accommodate acceptable (to growers) prices.

In reflection of the 2013 calendar year in regard to wool production, prices and trends, it has been another ‘testing’ one. Focus on dairy along with incredible development in irrigation has continued to replace sheep as an option for many farmers within the South Island which has had, and will continue to have, a dramatically negative effect on wool production. Also the dramatic improvement in crossbred wool prices throughout the year brought smiles to the faces of growers who were able to take advantage, however for many it came too late and following an ‘ordinary’ year for lamb meat returns, did little to improve sheep farmers’ attitudes towards sustainability.

On a more positive note the PGG Wrightson wool team delivered a wide

range of forward contracts to growers, enabling participants to lock-in price certainty for a portion of their wool clip.

Keeping farming in the family The family farm has been the cornerstone of farm ownership for well over a century. The issue of succession can be very emotional for many families.

There is an old saying, where there is a Will there is a relation.

Over Christmas, reading Keeping Farming in the Family, A guide to farm succession, by author lawyer Allan Ross Blackman, was a very valuable read and I recommend it.

The majority of us have difficulty in dealing with the issues of testamentary promises, Life Interest Wills, The Inter Vivos Trust, Memorandum of Wishes, Companies, The Succession Plan, Choosing your Advisors, Protecting the Family Farm.

The majority of farming families are asset rich and cash poor and if the family farm is to remain an important part of farm ownership, it is important to receive the very best of advice in the setting up of trusts and formulating a

good succession plan. Mr Blackman says in his book, that educating the farming client is a vital aspect of succession planning, one that the traditional professional is not inclined to do.

The old-fashioned conventional approach by professional advisers has been to tell the client what to do, without explaining why and how.

In the context of succession planning, the professional who says do it this way because I say so, is not providing an adequate service.

The ability to identify what the farmer needs and provide innovative and flexible solutions is key. Simply forming a trust and divesting all your property into it,

requires great thought, particularly when choosing trustees. Under the Trustees Act, there are special responsibilities the trustees must follow in ensuring the interests of the beneficiaries are protected.

Many farms have been owned by families through successive generations, but there have been a number of law changes where families under the Family Protection Act, have successfully challenged estates and there is case law, in particular the High Court case Scott vs. Scott which was held in December 2007 in Hamilton and twice in 2008 in Rotorua, that makes compelling reading.

This family over a six-year period was in litigation concerning the fate of two farms which had been in the family for many years. In summary, the plaintiff was Mr Lewtyn Scott and the defendants were Lewtyn’s mother and his three sisters. Lewtyn Scott was encouraged by his father and mother to return from London to take over the main family farm.

He purchased his father’s half-share in July 2000 at the registered valuation and his mother promised him her halfshare of the property. He paid $36,000 in interest on the money he borrowed from his mother, up until October 2004 when the family became involved in litigation.

He would have thought having paid fair value, that he had an entitlement to the increase in the value of the

half-share of the property that he had purchased.

Because of the significant increase in the value of the farm land at the time, Lewtyn’s three sisters were concerned that his acquisition of the farm had disadvantaged them. It is also ironical that Lewtyn’s mother in 2002, had promised in writing, to transfer to him her total interest in the farm and that she would make provision in her will to forgive the debt.

Her letter concluded — in the meantime you can regard the farm as yours. The letter omitted one important piece of advice, that the second farm had already been transferred to Lewtyn’s three sisters to his exclusion, which he did not accept.

The issues surrounding this case were complex but after six years of legal dispute and hundreds of thousands of legal costs, Lewtyn was told by the judge that he had to give back his half-share of the main farm and his mother was not obliged to sell him the other half.

The importance of having the legal structures correct, and clearly documented directions as to how the family succession plan will work is important. When the court’s get involved the gloves are off.

Serves 2: Ingredients: Broth 2 litres chicken stock 2 tbsp coriander seeds 2 tbsp black pepper corns 1 brown onion thumb of ginger ¼ cup fish sauce ¼ soy sauce half lemon 2 chillies 1 chicken breast 159 Rora St, Te Kuiti

Method: Turn your oven on to 180c, cut your brown onion in half leave the skin on, bake for 10 mins then grill for another 10 mins. Take out and add to the broth.

Bring your stock to the boil with the thumb of peeled ginger and chilli.

In a pan, toast your peppercorns and coriander seeds. Add to the broth, then add the fish sauce and soy sauce. It’s important to taste the broth to make sure your flavours are working well, the heat is up to you, you don’t have to add two chillies. Some might think the pepper is enough, let your taste buds do the talking.

Once the stock is to your liking, lower your heat and pop the chicken breast in to poach.

Depending on the size of the breast poaching time varies 20-30 mins. Once the chicken is cooked, take it out of the broth and slice it. Check the flavours of the broth, it’ll be a bit more chicken flavoured now due to the poaching.

Stones bruise — fact or fiction?

It seems a very difficult thing to accept that stones don’t bruise cow’s hooves.

I often talk with farmers about this and almost every time people are convinced that the bruising in their cow’s feet is caused by the cow standing on a stone

in the yard or on the tracks. When I ask farmers or veterinarians to explain and show me evidence of that statement then all is silent. Just because you can see some red colouring in the hooves doesn’t mean that it is caused by stones!

That reasoning is purely based on gut feel and has no scientific proof. Yet most farmers believe in that myth. I would love to see any evidence of that being true.

Why is it that farmers, veterinarians and other farming professionals keep coming back to it but they can’t show proof?

Why is that myth so hard to stop believing and dispel? I don’t know. Even after explaining and showing evidence that contradicts this theory, people have a hard time letting it go. Have you ever noticed that when you say something often enough it becomes true? I believe that this theory benefits from this fact.

I know that there are factors in farming that make this theory seem correct, but it isn’t. Take, for example, the idea that

when you renew your tracks you get less lame cows. Most farmers who have resurfaced their tracks would appear to have experienced that. I can accept that.

However, that is not enough evidence that the stones on the tracks have been the cause of the problem.

The main point that I would like to make is that we can’t jump to conclusions that easily. Some points that would question this theory for instance are: (i) there are many farmers who have very rough tracks but don’t have many problems with lame cows; and (ii) other farmers may have spent a significant amount of money on their tracks and still have big problems.

How would you explain that? Could it be that there is more going on with the tracks that we have not considered properly? I think there is. I think that the biggest benefit of improving the tracks is that it improves the cow flow.

Why is that such an important benefit?

It is important because a cow needs about 21 hours daily in the paddock to do their eating, drinking, socialising and resting.

That only leaves us 1.5 hours per milking to get the cows from the paddock to the shed, milk and walk them back to the paddock. When they don’t get back in the paddock 1.5 hours later then they are “overworked” — under more stress, less immune and more susceptible to laminitis.

When we improve the tracks and take 15 minutes off every walk, we give our cows 1 hour per day in the paddock longer than before. This makes more sense to me than the stone theory. Have a look for yourself the next time you trim cows’ feet. Which claw has the most bruising?

Which claw is usually the lame claw?

Where on the claw do you find most of the bruising? If you do that you will find a pattern very soon. How do you explain the same pattern coming back over and

over again? If the problem was caused by standing on stones would you not expect a much more random pattern? However most of the bruising is in the typical zone (zone 4) just on the back edge of the pedal bone.

The reason why so many cows have a bruise there is because the pedal bone has dropped down a bit as a result of laminitis. The pedal bone is attached to the wall of the claw by the corium.

The laminas are used to make this a very strong bond. The toe part of the claw has more laminas than in the heel therefore the heel tends to drop down easier and more than the toe. This results in a haemorrhage in the corium in zone 4.

Why do we find more of that haemorrhage on the outer claw? Because that is often the bigger claw which means it has more body weight pushing on the pedal bone so the pedal bone is pushing harder on the corium than the inner claw.

This is all a direct result from laminitis.

The reason why it is so important to understand this is that it has, or should have, a great impact on the way we trim cows feet. If the bruising is caused by stones then we need to leave as much sole thickness on those claws as possible because it would give more protection.

If it is caused by laminitis and the overloading is making it worse, then we would need to trim the outer claw back to the same size as the inner claw to release the excess pressure on the outer claw. I know that there are plenty of people that believe that we do not have laminitis in NZ but if the symptoms are there then we certainly need to consider it.

If the reality is that both theories are correct then it doesn’t matter how you trim cow’s feet, but we have shown that preventative trimming has a positive impact on the risks of lameness.

The heart of the Shire If the Shire is at the heart of The Lord of the Rings, then the Hamilton and Waikato region is at the heart of the Shire.

When scouting around for settings for his epic three movie adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Kiwi Director Peter Jackson found just what he was looking for in the green paddocks of the Waikato just outside Matamata.

The bucolic setting for the Shire, home of the hobbits, including Bag End, was right there, and just waiting for his magical director’s touch.

Whilst the cast and crew have gone, the visitor today can easily imagine hobbits going about their business, as well as being a tribute to the Kiwi filmmakers and artists who created it.

Visiting Matamata and the Hobbiton Movie Set is not just all about hobbits though. Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a working farm and allows visitors not only to ‘walk in the footsteps of the hobbits’ but to also discover the true rural diversity of the area.

In September 1998, Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema ‘discovered’ the Alexander farm during an aerial search for suitable film sites to portray Hobbiton. The fantastic views and rolling countryside of the Alexander farm closely resembled that of Middle-earth™ as described by JRR Tolkien. The farm was ideal.

The large established pine tree, later to become known as the ‘Party Tree’, was already perfectly placed in front of the lake. The surrounding rolling farmland was untouched by 20th century clutter such as roads, buildings or power lines.

Site construction started in March 1999. Initially this involved heavy earthmoving machinery provided by the New Zealand Army. Total site construction took nine months.

Throughout construction and filming all activity on the site was kept under strict security due to commercial restraints by the movie company.

Filming commenced in December 1999 and continued for three months.

At its peak, 400 people were ‘on site’ including Peter Jackson, Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen), Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood), Bilbo Baggins (Sir Ian Holm) and Sam Gamgee (Sean Astin).

In 2009 the set was rebuilt for the filming of the three films based on The Hobbit. Now the sets have been permanently constructed and a joint venture owned by Sir Peter Jackson and the Alexander family has been established to operate tours to the Hobbiton Movie Set. The farm is still

run as a commercial operation by the Alexander family.

The Hobbiton Movie Set tour is a visitor experience based at the original location where Hobbiton was created for the filming of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films.

With the release of The Hobbit — An Unexpected Journey, in December 2012, the focus of New Zealand tourism is once again upon the landscapes of our country and their transformation into Middle-earth.

Hobbiton Movie Set is the only remaining set in New Zealand and provides the opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in a landscape that has now become recognised around the world. A significant number of our visitors have not seen any of the

films and such is the iconic nature of Hobbiton Movie Set that this is not a pre-requisite. The opportunity to stroll down idyllic lanes amidst cottage flowers with the scent of honeysuckle lingering in the air, past Hobbit holes that seem to have been part of the landscape for centuries, is an absolute treat.
