Easily Control and Enhance Effluent Management Stricter New Zealand legislation surrounding the management and control of dairy effluent in the NZ dairy industry has resulted in increased volumes of nutrient rich effluent being collected from dairy sheds, feed pads and holding areas for application onto land and pastures. University of Waikato doctoral student Electra Kalaugher will take up the position of Environmental Farming Systems Advisor with the Waikato Regional Council (WRC) in March.

Ms Kalaugher will be joining a team under Environmental Farming Systems manager Alan Campbell, working to help make dairying and horticulture in the region more sustainable.

“It will involve a lot of networking within the industry, sharing information and catalysing initiatives that will support farmers, both in making the way they farm more sustainable and in coming to grips with the changing regulatory environment,” said Ms Kalaugher.

Young Farmers gearing up for regional final

Young farmers across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty are gearing up to battle it out in the ANZ Young Farmer of the Year regional final on February 16.

Four district finals were held through December to find the top contestants to compete at the regional final.

“The evening show is an entertaining evening for the whole family and is great value for money with the tickets including a three-course buffet dinner and the show.”

Waikato/Bay of Plenty Young Farmers Club president Jason Te Brake said competitor entries were up from previous years.

The winner of the regional final, announced during the show, will go onto the ANZ Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Auckland from May 15-18.

“Sixty members participated this year, ranging from serious competitors vying to advance to the National Grand Final, to first time entrants looking to develop their experience, to members who enjoy just getting out and challenging themselves each year.

t helps to have at your disposal some of the most interesting natural features in the region, of course. Simon and his wife Rosie live on a far-from-conventional block of land in the north-west Waikato — one blessed with lush native bush, cool streams, waterfalls and two-and-a-half kilometres of limestone caves.

Centuries or even millennia ago this cave system was even bigger, but a collapse during New Zealand’s prehistory has sculpted part of the land into a rugged wonderland of cliffs and hollows, reminiscent of some of Peter Jackson’s famous MiddleEarth cinematography. Over the years a verdant covering of native bush has draped the area in green.

wanted to expand their programme of activities.

The owners of Brooklands had heard about the limestone caverns on Simon’s property, and asked whether he would be interested in showing visitors through these underground cathedrals of glow worms, stalactites and crystal formations.

“We bought some torches and hard hats, and away we went,” says Simon That was back in 1995, and the slow, steady growth of Adventure Waikato has kept pace with the yearin, year-out demands of running a successful farm.

As well as introducing people to the wonders of the glow-worm cave and Ruru cave (so called because native owls nest around its entrance), Simon added clay bird shooting, abseiling, an immense 220-metre flying fox and

team-building activities to his repertoire, creating an engaging experience all on one property.

Groups — from classes of school children all the way through to corporate teams — have come to encounter a little slice of prehistoric wilderness tucked away in the Waikato. It’s not without reason that Simon calls one of his walking trails the ‘Jurassic Stroll’ — it includes plants long extinct in other parts of the world, ancient rock formations, fossils, and giant cave weta.

No wonder that one keen schoolteacher has brought her class to visit Simon’s little piece of paradise for twelve consecutive years!

Being situated on a working farm has also given Adventure Waikato a point of difference. Simon’s knowledge of downto-earth Kiwi farming has led to a few interesting team games being developed

here, including the ever-popular ‘human dog trials’ — a challenge which puts people in the place of the trusty border collie, herding sheep through a series of obstacles.

For a lifelong farmer who never set out to create an adventure tourism park, Simon has done amazingly well. He and Rosie, along with abseiling instructors Tim Reep and Rob Horsley, enjoy meeting people and introducing them to the natural wonders just beyond the beaten track.

Today they balance a renowned, safe and always interesting tourist and team-building destination with a farm carrying on the generational tradition of Simon’s family.

avid has received honours for a sporting career that has allowed him to travel the world and even led him to his wife, a Devon dairy-farm girl whom he met at the Royal Welsh Show in 1989.

Since winning his first Golden Shears title at age 24, he has raked up 16 Golden Shears open titles at Masterton and 17 NZ open titles at Te Kuiti, as well as five world champion titles and seven world team titles — a grand total of 614 open wins worldwide.

He was awarded Member of the NZ Order of Merit in 1999 and Officer of the NZ Order of Merit in 2007.

Not bad going for someone who had no desire to be a shearer. A top woodwork student at Piopio College, David wanted to become a builder.

“I was more interested in carpentry than shearing but when I left school there were no building jobs so I learnt to shear like my older brothers, John and Geoff and it was fatal — I got the shearing bug,” says David.

The Alexander family’s life changed forever when location scouts for the blockbuster movie, The Lord of the Rings came to visit their sheep and beef farm near the town of Matamata. It has since become one of the main attractions in New Zealand with visitor numbers booming with the release of director, Peter Jackson’s prequel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Even though the family could safely retire from farming they still have around 13,000 sheep and 300 Angus beef cattle in conjunction with the tourism venture.

Russell runs the tourism operation while his brother Craig is in charge of the farm.

“We don’t farm any differently since the sets were built,” says Russell and the family shear all the sheep themselves.

Set construction began in 1999 and as it was only meant to be a temporary structure, 37 hobbit holes were made out of untreated timber, ply and polystyrene with the New Zealand army contracted to build 1.5 kilometres of road onto the site.

When filming finished New Line Cinema began to tear down the sets before the Alexander’s sought the rights for them to stay and host tours.

While it has transformed the Alexander’s life it has also turned Matamata with a population of around 6,300 into a tourism hub. Six per cent of visitors to New Zealand, or around 150,000 people, cite the Lord of the Rings as their main reason for coming here.

With the release of the first Hobbit movie in the trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, visitor numbers are expected to be even higher than at the height of the Lord of the Rings tourism boom.

Four hundred thousand are expected to visit the town according to the Matamata Tourism office in the coming year and Russell says it has been hectic doubling their number of tours to 22 a day.

The Alexander family struck a deal with Peter Jackson to build a permanent set for the prequel trilogy of The Hobbit and Mr Jackson is now in partnership with the Alexanders.

The pub features in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and while all interior shots were filmed in studios in Wellington, Russell assures it’s authentic.

Nutritional therapy for joint problems (Part 1) Arthritis is just a term for joint inflammation. Any disease that includes the suffix ‘itis’ confirms it is an inflammatory disease. Arthritis is different from other forms of joint inflammation as it involves the gradual destruction of joint tissue. Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterised by the loss and damage to joint cartilage- the tough connective tissue that protects the ends of bones. Over time cartilage erodes and this plus associated inflammation can damage the bone surfaces. In the past this was called ‘wear and tear’ arthritis as it was thought that it was caused by the gradual wearing down of cartilage much like the wearing down of the soles of a shoe.

There are many factors that increase the risk of OA including being female, age, nutrition, genetics, injury, obesity, and joint deformities. We now know that OA is a specific disease process more likened to corrosion than erosion. . It seems that the process, while influenced by trauma and genetics is primarily a disease where free radicals damage joint cells called chondrocytes. These are the cells that maintain cartilage and when they die this leads to the erosion of cartilage. The immune system then attempts to repair the damage and this leads to joint inflammation.

The result is the pain, swelling and lack of joint function that we know as OA. The main medical approach is anti-inflammatory medication which temporarily restricts the activity of joint immune cells thus reducing inflammation and relieving pain and swelling. Nutritional therapy has a similar goal but uses naturally occurring compounds that can help repair cartilage while reducing inflammation. The natural anti-inflammatory compounds include fish oils, some botanical compounds from grape seeds, turmeric and ginger and a long list of micronutrients including minerals. To this we can add compounds such as glucosamine sulphate, MSM and chondroitin sulphate.

These compounds help to repair damaged cartilage.

The real trick is to combine these compounds at the right doses for the right time periods. For example I have found that the glucosamine type products are less effective for smaller joints. The best natural approaches to OA involve an antiinflammatory diet and a structured supplement programme that needs to be closely monitored. My preference is to have monthly monitoring for the first 6 months to maximise the benefits. Give me a call if you need advice.

Crickets hit for six by new product The battle against insect pests is a constant one for many farmers, but a new weapon is now available to combat a particularly insidious creepy-crawly — the common cricket.

Farmers have shown an enthusiastic response to a unique new cricket bait launched last autumn, setting the scene for more market growth this year, according to the company behind the innovation.

Crickoff Pro is a ready-to-apply treated whole wheat bait, comprising the active ingredient malathion.

Ease of application has been a major selling benefit, as farmers can broadcast the bait onto paddocks affected by black field cricket infestations, says pest eradication expert Stephen Finch.

He and partner David Percival recently formed a new company called Pest Go to market this and other pest control products.

Crickoff Pro was their first product launch, and sold well last summer and autumn.

“We had a relatively quiet launch — we didn’t want create too much noise about it until we got our heads around manufacturing and distribution, but it was very well received in the market and we’re looking forward to selling more of it this year, depending on how much pest pressure is about.”

“Farmers like it because it is just so simple to use,” says Finch. “Just buy it and apply it — no messing around.”

Application at the recommended rate of 10 — 11 kg per hectare shows a rapid and significant reduction of all mid to late stage nymphs (juveniles) and all adult crickets.

If populations are initially very high farmers can be confident of effective knockdown by applying just a little more — 15kg per hectare.

Crickoff Pro has been developed over the past three years with rigorous lab and field testing to ensure it meets both ERMA and NZFSA regulatory authority specifications, as well as ensuring it has minimal non-target species and environmental effects. Of course, another huge aspect of development has been making the bait attractive to crickets!

Bait stability and weathering tests have all returned positive results and the company is doing further research to see whether the current seven-day withholding period can be reduced.

Plants have evolved nutrient uptake systems that most suit their particular environment.

Before we learned we could increase growth by applying organic manures and ultimately, manufactured fertiliser, plants had to make do largely with whatever they could scavenge with their roots from the soil, supplemented by deposits of excreta from grazing animals or, even less evenly, the decay of dead animals themselves.

Plants can also take up nutrients in gaseous form — like N as ammonia gas — through their stomata, which are tiny holes in the leaves.

Some plants have developed smart ways of improving the availability of nutrients that are in the soil, such as excreting acid hydrogen ions from their roots, which replace calcium and other cations on clays, allowing them to be ‘swapped’ for the hydrogen. Others excrete chemicals that make existing soil acidity, particularly soluble aluminium, less toxic.

This is not to say however that plants cannot take up nutrients through their leaves. They are opportunists, like most living organisms. The main difference in the design of leaves and roots is that the former have a layer of protective wax covering them, which is produced by the outer or cuticle layer of soils. This cuticle wax provides protection against excessive sunlight, dust and so on.

In addition, major nutrient requirements (P.K.S) can be incorporated in a range of particle sizes, with the deliberate aim of ensuring that the majority falls through the leaf onto the soil, avoiding ‘leaf burn’.

Water treatment differences A clean water supply and adequate sanitation system are the most important factors in ensuring good health in a rural drinking water supply.

The source of the water supply whether it’s bore, stream or rain is the starting point in ascertaining the levels of risk and management required to make the drinking water safe.

Treatment for water falls into three categories.

Filtration is the removal of suspended solids in the water. Filters can be in the form of screens or cartridges and be operated either manually or automatically.

Some filtration cartridges filter as fine as 0.5 micron, which can be used to help the removal of protozoan cysts like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, but cannot remove viruses. Iron and manganese removal and pH correction (although not strictly filters) fall into this category.

Purification is the removal/reduction of taste and odour. Carbon filters in the form of cartridges or backwashable media filters are used in this application.

Disinfection is the process of killing bugs. It is the single most important treatment step in the production of safe potable water. Treatment can be done chemically (usually with chlorine) or with ultra violet light. Using UV is a safe, non chemical way of disinfection and is by far the most popular option. In order for disinfection to work correctly the water must be clean.

There are estimated to be over 70,000 Quad bikes used extensively on farms, horticultural and viticulture businesses throughout New Zealand. In the rural sector, Quad bike and tractor accidents are the most common causes of work-related fatalities, apart from road accidents.

“Quad bike accidents happen all too quickly and most are preventable. Sadly the outcomes are long lasting.

Because quad bikes are easy to ride and versatile, people often under estimate the risks involved. Quad bikes are powerful vehicles with gross weight of hundreds of kilos, including any trailers. That’s a lot of load to fall or roll. A common reaction after an injury or accident has occurred, is “how did this happen?” says Andrew Primrose, FarmSafe’s Regional Manager.

bruising happens because of external force then why do they look so similar? If they were caused by standing on stones then I would expect a much more even pattern over the whole claw. Sometimes I clean the wall of the claw with my grinder just to see what symptoms can be found there. In the second picture you can see some haemorrhage in the wall of the claw. How does it get there? If you look at this evidence, it is hard to argue that those bruises are caused by the physical causes that so many people believe.

I appreciate that disproving one theory doesn’t prove another. So, I can’t say that this evidence is conclusive, that it is diet that causes the problems for those cows, but I can say that there has to be a problem with the corium (live tissue) on the inside of the claw. Especially if you see sole ulcers in claws, as shown in the photo, when the cow in question is a beef cow! This animal doesn’t even know what a stone looks like. It doesn’t get pushed over tracks, doesn’t have to

stand on yards and isn’t under stress.

So, if it is not physical force that caused this problem, and the young lush grass had nothing to do with it, then what caused this sole ulcer?

One other thing I want to mention is water. Cows would do much better if they had plenty of access to water. Often when they leave the paddock for milking they don’t have any water available until they get back into the paddock. That is way too long, especially on hot days. I wonder how it would go if there were single drinking pots in every stand on the platform in the cow shed. It would be a good way to get cows onto the platform and may even work better than meal.

Top sharemilkers build their future

Winning the 2011 New Zealand Sharemilker Equity Farmer of the year competition has been a career highlight for Waikato’s Jason and Lisa Suisted.

The couple, who have been sharemilking for eight years, started building their first herd well before they began their first 50 per cent sharemilking position.

But before they ventured into a career in the dairy industry, the pair worked in completely different areas. Jason was a builder by trade and Lisa worked as a hairdresser.

Lisa said their decision to go farming enabled them to take control of their future and become self-employed.

“We turned to farming as we could see a clear path of progression and with hard work we could see it would be a successful future for us.”

The couple’s first year farming saw Jason working as an assistant manager in a 500-cow position near Morrinsville while Lisa continued hairdressing.

From there they went contract milking 600 cows at Springdale, spending three

years in that position and saving hard.

Jason began working towards an agribusiness diploma while Lisa attended courses to up-skill with the financial side of the business.

“We tried to learn as much as we could from our boss and started networking to find a suitable bank and accountant,” said Lisa.

“The saving was the key to us reaching our 50/50 goal.”

While contract milking, Jason and Lisa purchased 30 good quality mixedage cows and leased them out.

Jason and Lisa won the 2011 New Zealand Sharemilker Equity Farmer of the Year competition

Jason and Lisa have increased production figures from 130,749kgMS to 151,000kgMS with around the same number of cows. This year they are aiming for 160,000kgMS with 470 cows. The herd is milked in a 40-aside herringbone shed.

This season, the couple hired a manager to allow Jason more time to finish his studies and to permit future growth opportunities.

They recommend up-and-coming farmers enter the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards to give themselves a competitive edge when applying for positions.

“This is a very dynamic industry and we love hearing the unlikely success stories that have come from it,” said Lisa.

“We find other dairy farmers downto-earth, non-pretentious and always willing to share their ideas and business models with us.

“There is a lot of support in this industry and when challenged you can notice a real sense of community looking out for each.”

In the short term, the couple’s goal is to obtain a larger 50 per cent sharemilking position with between 800–1,000 cows. They would also like to purchase an 80ha property.

“Long term we would like to live on our own farm with our children,” said Lisa.

Since its early beginnings as a small pipe bands contest, the event has developed to include several traditional highland competitions along with an evening Tattoo.

“Paeroa is the only town that holds an evening tattoo,” said organising committee member Anne Harris.

Set amongst the backdrop of the Paeroa Castle, the event will commence at 9am with the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems, followed by the unofficial Scottish anthem ‘Flower of Scotland’.

Two international competitors, Australians Craig Read and Aaron Monk, are returning to compete in the heavyweight field events. The current New Zealand champion, Patrick Hellier, will also return to defend his title.

Junior field games will be held for the first time this year to encourage young people to participate.

Highland pipe bands from Auckland and the central North Island will compete in sets, medleys and a street march during the afternoon, followed by massed band displays during the evening Tattoo.

Motorcyclists from around New Zealand and overseas will descend on Paeroa on February 16 and 17 for the Mobil 1 Battle of the Streets.

The event has been run for more than two decades and the 1.52km circuit starts in the main street over a town route that has become known as the ‘Hacksaw’ owing to its shape. It has provided a testing circuit on which riders reach speeds of 280kph and sidecars close to 220kph along the main straight.

The crowd support has been growing each year with the event attracting in excess of 13,000 spectators as well as a national television audience. On race day there are some 350 volunteers involved.

The Order of St. John uses the event as a training day, and the local fire brigade and police are also involved on the ground.

A pioneer way of life

An interest in New Zealand’s early settlers’ history has led Wellington woman Vicky Alexander on a nostalgic journey, cooking in a mobile pioneer cottage.

“We copied friends in Australia who had something similar but theirs is dismountable while ours is a shed built to fit our trailer,” said Vicky.

Now the new pioneer cottage serves a number of functions including transporting Ken’s vintage engine and providing a sleeping area.

The cottage travels on a tandem trailer, houses a wood stove and the interior is decorated in a pioneer style.

Vicky said the cottage, which is built from macrocarpa slabs with a corrugated iron roof, represents building materials that were available in the pioneer era.

At events Vicky dresses in keeping with the pioneer era, pegs out a long clothesline with a selection of clothing, and then makes scones which are sold to event visitors.

Ken recently built a Mark II cottage for a new trailer. The new cottage is clad with tongue and groove look-a-like, has a rolled iron roof and leadlight windows.

The couple attend up to six events a year and meet hundreds of people.

“It’s a lot of fun and I’ve met a lot of older people who have given me advice for getting the best from my wood stove,” said Vicky.

New tools help manage rivers in forests Staying connected with science developments often provides opportunities to innovate in ways not first envisaged by those who initiated the science.

In one recent example, work undertaken by NIWA to develop a Rivers Environments Classification (REC) has been applied by PF Olsen to help manage rivers and streams in the forests it manages.

The REC is a spatial dataset that classifies all river segments according to a variety of factors that influence their primary physical state.
