“The dry conditions we have seen through early summer are putting fruit and vegetable growers under pressure to the point where some are having to make decisions about which plants and trees they may not be able to plant or harvest, and which may need to be left to die as scarce water supply is used to keep other plants alive,” says chief executive Mike Chapman.

“No water means plants die and as a result, fresh fruit and vegetables are unavailable and prices go up because demand is higher than supply.

“Relying on water to fall from the sky simply isn’t enough. HortNZ believes we should be more proactive in capturing and storing that water to ensure sustainability of supply during times of drought.

“The best way to ensure adequate water supply to irrigate fruit and vegetable plants is to store water in dams. Dams also benefit streams and rivers by reducing flood risk and keeping flows up during dry periods, which protects aquatic life.”

Mr Chapman says there are benefits to every New Zealander from having a reliable water supply, but there are inconsistent policies across central and local government when it comes to water, land use, preparing for climate change goals, and community needs.

“We believe these should be looked at holistically. On the one hand the government wants a Zero Carbon Act and to plant one billion more trees, but on the other hand, local authorities are increasingly putting pressure on water supplies, limiting water access for irrigation to grow food.

“There needs to be a wider national approach to these issues and support, and recognition for regions that are addressing them as communities, for example, Horticulture New Zealand

supports the Waimea Dam in the Tasman District and the proposal for it to be a joint venture with the territorial authorities. This is because there are broad community benefits from the dam in an area that is growing in population, and therefore, has a greater need for a water supply for people as well as plants.

“The benefits of the dam include water for food security and primary production, security of water supply for urban water users, improved ecosystem health of the Waimea River, recreational benefits, regional economy benefits, business development and expansion, and more jobs.

“The Waimea Dam is the answer to everyone’s water needs in the district.”

Intuition is important Two Lincoln University researchers have been examining how farmers make their decisions, the role intuition plays, and how it can be improved.

Dr Peter Nuthall and Dr Kevin Old, from the Department of Land Management and Systems, have had their analysis of farmers’ intuitive decision-making published in the international rural research journal Rural Studies. Data was gathered from more than 700 farmers.

“Farmer intuition has never been analysed to this extent before,” Dr Nuthall said.

“Research has shown farmers make the majority of decisions using their intuition. They do not formally analyse each decision, but use their mental powers to decide on what action to take.

“Sometimes the decision is instantaneous, but in others a range of thought levels are brought to bear before acting. Good decision intuition is not a mysterious process.

“Profit and other assessments show some farmers are good intuitive decision makers, others not so good.”

Farmers with little experience, whether they have good potential intuition or not, find it difficult to make good decisions.

“The intuition process often uses what is called ‘pattern matching’, where the brain uses experience to match up

past events with the current decision problem,” says Dr Nuthall.

“The farmer’s intuition then comes up with what the brain believes to be the correct action, however intuition is more than just pattern matching, intuition develops with a farmer’s thought process, self-criticism and review.”

The new research showed how farmers can improve their intuition.

“Obviously the farmers’ technical farming knowledge is important as a forerunner, but equally is the attention to carefully observing the state of the farm and the relevant markets.

“Observations must be accurate and cover all the issues important to any decision, and the farmer must be good at anticipating the path ahead — looking ahead skills are critical in assessing alternative actions to solve any decision problem. These all tend to be inbuilt skills.”

He said these skills can be improved with attention and practice.

“A farmer should analyse all past decisions and take on board any lessons on offer, discussing past actions with colleagues and family helps improve

mind held patterns and produce good solutions.”

As an aid to improve intuition Dr Nuthall has produced a novel The Intuitive Farmer: Inspiring Management Success, which tells the story of a group of farmers and their meetings covering a range of management challenges and skills associated with intuition.

Guided by meeting facilitators, the farmers sort out each other’s decision problems, learning and taking on board the lessons. A new novel is being prepared to guide farmers through the process of modifying their ‘management style’. The novel is available through most international online book sellers.

Miko Hayashi and Stacia Jensen believe in a clean and green environment and taking care of our farms and rural properties. Utilising the wax from honey bee hives to create wax wraps is one way they are helping the environment.

tacia originates from the United States and has lived in New Zealand for 10 years and Miko was born in India and raised in Australia.

The couple met at a yoga retreat in Coromandel and they now call New Zealand home with baby Kio. “We were travelling around New Zealand and felt inspired by the beauty and were determined to reduce our plastic use and impact on the environment and the idea flourished,” says Stacia.

“At the time I was teaching yoga, and the idea to create something natural really appealed to us. We already recycle and reduce our caustic use as much as possible and we decided to pursue the wrap idea and it became serious.

“Bees are incredible, and they lend some of their magical property to the wax which helps us. They are awesome creatures — they pollinate our plants and pastures which helps create the oxygen we breathe. We use local wax as much as possible and when a bee

flies by we often wonder if that bee has made the wax we use.”

The couple found the wax they originally used didn’t work well and there was a lot of frustration with the original recipe.

“Miko found a great recipe and we changed the wax we used,” says Stacia.

“We source as much wax as possible locally and started selling our Lilybee wraps at a farmers’ market. Farmers are enjoying having our wrap for their food whilst out working, and being in touch with nature and the environment they appreciate having an alternative to plastic.”

The wraps are reusable and Miko says that element appeals to country folk.

“It is hard to do anything without plastic being involved. Just look at the shelves in your local supermarket — everything is covered in plastic, even fruits and vegetables are shrink-wrap packaged and bagged,” he says.

“Farmers appreciate having a natural product and it is a way to connect with bees. There are lots of types of wax just as there is many types of honey.”

Stacia says people trying to make wraps at home can be disappointed by the results because different waxes have different properties but they are all antiseptic and antibacterial.

“Airtight seals can be created around containers with wax wraps, and they are great for workers making hay or silage or bringing in stock. Put in a chilly bin and you are good to go for the day.

“Even the honey smell is welcomed by those who use them. The wraps help

“One couple wasn’t sure how it would work for them until they wrapped half an onion and forgot it was in the fridge for a few weeks. It came out totally fine and now they have a set each.”

All products are hand made — from mixing the ingredients — to melting it down and creating the recipe — the mixture is also applied to the cotton by hand.

“You need to be careful with the process as wax won’t come off if you get it on things like your clothes. Each wrap should last at least a year with proper care.

After use give it a wash with cool water and eco friendly detergent and keep it out of direct sunlight for quality control.

Sheep springing forward

by Ann Morgan With the aim to deliver the nutritious goodness of New Zealand sheep milk to consumers across the world, the Spring Sheep Milk Co. are combining their knowledge to create the best practices for farmers to deliver top quality products.

“O

ur goal is to build a sustainable, high-value primary industry that is innovative and collaborative through the PGP programme,” says CEO Nick Hammond.

New Zealand has specialised in meat and wool sheep for the last 150 years, whilst Europe uses milking breeds.

“Globally, sheep milk is a US$8billion industry. In Europe they are blown away that we aren’t milking sheep, and it’s a tragedy as we are phenomenal at dairy products and renowned for animal husbandry in sheep.”

Lambing is from August 1, and the milking season finishes around the end of March. The production is 15-20 ewes per hectare, similar to a system three or four dairy herd.

“People sensitive to regular cow’s milk, generally don’t have trouble consuming sheep milk. Sheep milk is naturally gentle on the stomach and has up to twice the amount of

calcium and protein, and it tastes delicious too. “Creating the optimum New Zealand farming system for dairy sheep and growing an industry is our goal. People in the Mediterranean and Asia grew up on alternative dairy, and are not surprised at its quality nutrition and digestibility benefits. Sheep milk does have advantages over traditional dairy operations, and research shows significant environmental benefits too.

“In terms of genetics, the normal New Zealand sheep will produce 60-120 litres per year. We haven’t had access to the top dairy genetics, but MPI recently enabled high-performance sheep to be imported and they can produce 400 litres across flocks — or up to 1,000 litres in top performers per year, making a farming system economically viable.”

The PGP Sheep — Horizon Three programme has been established for long term innovation. It plans to build an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable sheep milking industry targeting $200M-$700M in sales by 2030.

The programme has gained positive results and has had a great response to a tailored nutrition programme that doubled milk yield on a per ewe basis.

“New Zealand sheep have adapted to our environment for wool and meat.

We need systems to allow dairy sheep to thrive here. Our pasture is one of our advantages, but we are researching other needs such as nutrition and indoor housing,” says Nick.

“The current exporting sheep milk farms run 2,000-4,000 sheep. That scale is not accessible to the normal farmer due to farm size so within the PGP programme, we are launching two smaller pilot sites in Cambridge.

“A lot of farms are around 40 hectares but no longer viable, as cow dairy sites

due to economic and environmental pressures. The environmental pressures for sheep milking are lower, and we are aiming to produce a model so farmers can change over by making a few slight changes for a small investment.

“We want to develop the skill sets of New Zealanders. We brought over John Ryrie, our farm manager, from the UK — he was born and raised in Scotland and has more than 20 years’ experience working on sheep dairy farms throughout Europe. Ultimately, we want New Zealanders to be successful at this.”

The pilot farms will promote and train people with as much knowledge as possible.

Health from the

ocean

Whilst visiting organic farms around New Zealand some years ago, Jill Bradley and Keith Atwood discovered the importance of organically grown fruit and veges and started their family business AgriSea, producing seaweed products for the home gardener.

O

ver time a range of skincare products was created under the business Ocean Organics in 1996 as a way for Jill to have a natural hand cream made from a wide variety of New Zealand herbs. Other products have also been made available to help with skin.

“Our skincare products are created from an array of high quality hand picked and hand pressed New Zealand native wild herbs, and the results are incredible,” says Jill.

“They are produced in small batches and are made totally by hand — from the picking to the mixing and packaging.

“I often gardened without gloves and my hands had little infections from rose

thorns and things so I needed a cream that was moisturising and healing.

We set about visiting many medical herbalists to find someone we could work with on our project.”

It took well over a year to find someone the couple would work with.

Jill and Keith had two questions for each person they met with. How long have you been a medical herbalist and would you be prepared to sit with Maori experts to work with herbs of our own country?

“We all hear about Chinese herbs and the European knowledge of herbs but it was the knowledge of New Zealand medicinal herbs that we wanted to integrate. Our herbs come from a perfect bush environment — grown in beautiful

quality soil. We found a lady that has worked with herbs all her life and she said she would be honoured to sit with Maori herbal experts to learn from.”

Jill and Keith then decided their Agrisea gardeners might appreciate the hand cream as it is not filled with chemicals and is moisturising and healing. The family then created a healing salve that has also become very popular.

“It is really outstanding and a lot of people with eczema use it — it was like magic. In the early days I cleared a big bank of cleavers, and my forearms were absolutely on fire when I came in. I said to Keith I made a mistake and should have worn sleeves and gloves, so I used the salve on one arm as a test and it was an instant relief.

“It has a mixture of herbs such as manuka, flax root, seaweed, rescue

remedy and lavender. It is one of those balms that is good for anything and clients have said it is magic for hemorrhoids as well. A friend who had bowel cancer used it out of desperation after chemotherapy and said it was like magic and helped her get relief where nothing else had worked.”

Five years later Jill’s daughter asked her to create a face cream.

“The rose and almond face cream was the very last product we made and is for our gardeners and Agrisea farmers’ wives — the men use it too. It is a truly nourishing face cream and is great if you are out in the elements. It has no chemicals in it, just herbs.

New CEO for foundation Dr Alison Stewart has been appointed the new CEO of the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR).

Dr Stewart is currently general manager Forest Science at Scion — an entity of New Zealand’s Crown Research Institute.

“She will bring with her a unique combination of skills,” says FAR Board chair David Birkett.

Dr Stewart leads a range of activities including breeding, agronomy, biosecurity, remote sensing, wood quality and value chain optimisation, and is also responsible for Scion’s strategic relationships with a number of national and international stakeholders.

“Alison is an internationally recognised scientist with specialist knowledge in the area of plant protection,” says Mr Birkett.

“She has a wealth of experience in managing research groups, programmes and institutions in New Zealand universities and crown research institutes, with research encompassing everything from cutting edge molecular technologies to product development and on-farm trials. As such, she has a strong understanding of the New Zealand science sector, particularly as it relates to primary industries.”

Dr Stewart also worked in the commercial sector in New Zealand and the United States, successfully developing and commercialising several biologically based pest and disease management technologies for the agriculture, horticulture and nursery sectors, and sat on the boards of Plant and Food Research in New Zealand and

Feed company to import and deliver molasses nationwide

New Zealand-based national feed company GrainCorp Feeds has announced it will offer molasses through its national supply chain.

General manager Daniel Calcinai says this change from solely a distributor to an importer and distributor is significant for the dairy industry and will offer farmers greater choice when it comes to their liquid feed requirements.

The company will offer the product direct to New Zealand dairy farmers using their national storage facilities, which can hold up 35,000Mt of product.

Mr Calcinai believes that the focus on milk composition with the incoming parameters and potential penalties from inflated fat, measured using the fat evaluation index (FEI), will encourage the use of feeds other than palm kernel.

Molasses provides the flexibility to be fed in its current state or blended with other GrainCorp dry or liquid feeds to

help reduce palm kernel consumption and FEI penalties.

“It’s widely agreed that molasses is an excellent supplementary feed for pasture fed ruminants and provides many benefits for dairy cows as part of the overall diet,” he says.

Sisters win photography competition

A dairy farming couple’s two daughters are among the winners in the annual IHC Calf and Rural Scheme photo competition. It was the first photo competition the girls, Anne Barrow,14, and Maria Barrow,12, of south Dannevirke had entered.

The IHC Calf and Rural Scheme introduced the competition in 2013.

Prior to this, a colouring competition was held which Anne had also won previously.

After reading about the photo competition in an IHC newsletter, Anne and Maria decided to enter.

Using their family’s camera, a Canon PowerShot 2006 SX170 IS, the sisters took several photos around the farm and with pet calves before deciding which photos to send in.

The girls’ mother Diane said all her children got on board taking photos and were competing with each other.

The competition criteria covered photos of pledged calves, other calves, farming scenes, rural scenes and anything particularly ‘New Zealand’.

Photos with people could be included if permission had been given by those photographed. Diane said her family found out that Anne and Maria were competition winners by email.

“I was out at the time and when I got home was told to check the computer.

They were dancing and bouncing around with excitement.” Winning the competition has encouraged the sisters to continue taking photographs for

further contests. “We will be keeping an eye out for more and looking out for more things to enter,” said Diane.

Staff at the IHC national office judged the photo competition. Maria won the 8 to 12 year age group and Anne was the winner of the 13 to 18 year category.

Other winners were Nyla Lauridsen from Te Awamutu who won the seven and under section, and Michelle van Zyl from Gore took first place in the over 18 age group.

Positive start for Taratahi

Taratahi’s efforts to attract new students has paid off with solid enrolments for 2018.

“Taratahi upped its marketing and as a result, the definite enrolments for 2018 are looking great and the institution’s taster courses have attracted large numbers of students,” says Chief executive Arthur Graves.

“Taratahi and the wider primary industry have been promoting the jobrich agricultural environments and extensive career pathways on offer, and those campaigns are now yielding some great results.”

The institution is also adapting its farming systems in response to consumer demands for greater visibility over the provenance of their food.

“This year Taratahi is introducing ‘sexed’ bull semen that almost solely

produces female calves — negating the need for the bobby calf trade which is becoming less acceptable to the public.

Our aim is to use this innovation to ensure we have zero bobby calves on all our dairy farms.

“It also means our students are exposed to some of the latest on-farm methods while educating them about ‘bigger picture’ of where farming is heading with lower input, more animal welfare friendly, environmentally friendly, traceable natural food.

“We have also worked hard to attract prospective students from the city, by showing them there are a range of interesting career options in what is now a ver y complex and rewarding sector.”

Stag demand reflects confidence

Confidence in the future profitability of venison and velvet production has flowed through to the market for sire stags, with strong sales reported throughout the country.

Breeders repor t a marked improvement on last year’s results and although no stags broke the $100,000 mark, average prices were up strongly for most sales, several by more than 50 per cent. Overall clearance rates were 94 per cent, compared with 83 per cent last year.

“Venison schedule prices to farmers normally peak each year in October before the last chilled shipments leave for Europe for the annual game meat season,” says Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ) chief executive Dan Coup.

“This season prices have continued to rise into January, with the published average now around a record $10.30 a kilogram for a carcase in the preferred weight range. The drivers in the market remain unchanged from last year, namely lower production in New Zealand, successful diversification by marketers into new year-round markets and very strong demand for venison from the United States, both for grilling

cuts and manufacturing grades.”

DINZ Asia market manager Rhys Griffiths says demand for velvet from the two main markets, Korea and China, has been strong this season. Prices have climbed back to levels reached two seasons ago, before changes in Chinese hygiene regulations led to a loss of buyer confidence unrelated to the longterm demand for New Zealand velvet.

“Total velvet exports reached $43 million in the 2015/16 season, increasing to $59 milion in the 2016/17 season. With a lift in the velvet price and the forecast increase in production, another increase in the value of velvet exports is expected this season.”

Two new entrants to the sire breeding business, Rupert Red Deer near Geraldine and Forest Road Farm in central Hawke’s Bay, had their inaugural stag sales this summer. Each had strong sales with high clearance rates, averaging nearly $5,000 and just over $11,000 respectively — both specialise in breeding for velvet antler. With the

venison schedule at an all-time high, demand for stags with high breeding values (BVs) for carcase growth rate has also been high.

Sires for venison production bred by Ruapehu Red Deer in the central North Island enjoyed a total clearance and an average price of nearly $7,000, up nearly one-third on last season.

Lochinvar stud, Te Anau, sold all 25 wapiti bulls on offer at an average $5,400, 10 per cent up. Manapouri’s Connemara Wapiti had a total clearance and prices up 46 per cent, and a

$38,000 bull sold at the annual Tikana Wapiti sale, a record price for the stud.

Interim figures for the year ended December 31 2017 reveal that females have dropped below 48 per cent of the total slaughter, a good indication that the national hind breeding herd is being rebuilt — putting an end to a gradual decline that began in 2005.

“DINZ is receiving a few requests for information from new farmers entering the industry. With consistently strong venison and velvet prices, the industry is in a confident mood,” says Mr Coup.
